Editorial

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley. It is delivered free monthly to more than 4,600 homes

There seems to be something of a fowl thing going on in this month’s magazine. Hens are cropping up all over the place. I’ve been told about three unlikely hen flocks around the town; unlikely in that somehow one can’t dissociate flocks of hens from open fields and rolling pastures, not unlikely as in “rare”. (The news on Florence, by the way, is that she’s been getting at the other five hens in her hen run. Nigel is thinking of anger management classes for her.)

Apart from hens, Bewdley is quietly getting on with life after the busy Christmas period. The last vestiges of wrapping paper and pine needles have been tidied away, the last – biodegradeable – duck will have reached Bristol after its trip downriver on New Year’s Day, Christmas Specials will have disappeared from the supermarkets and TV schedules, and we will have dug out thermals and antifreeze for the long haul up to Spring. Even Gary, our energetic photographer, grumbles that there’s nothing for him to capture for next month’s Bridge cover. Looking out of my window at nothing but thick white fog, I’m inclined to agree. Actually, don’t tell him, but it’s the thing I most look forward to when we have our monthly editorial meetings. What will he have for next month’s cover? I think you’ll agree that he always comes up with something good. Perhaps, though, you don’t know that if you would like your photos to be in the magazine, send them to Gary (the address is below) for him to see.

Enough of winter gloom! All our clubs are in full swing, the young peoples’ activities – guides,Youth Café, choirs – are hives of activity, and, as always, The Bridge contains details of lots of things to do, if we can just tear ourselves away from the central heating, climb out of our chairs and get out there. So even without a covering of feathers, I’ll copy our clucking hens and explore the town in Winter. And why not join in? Then write and tell us what you’ve been up to. Especially if you keep hens!

You move to a new area and you have a new job to settle in to, a new home to find and perhaps schools to sort out for the kids. Once the initial hard work is over, you then start to think about how to meet people and build a social circle. Or perhaps you have been in the area for a long time but would like to expand your horizons? If you’re interested in coming along to a couple of evenings so see if you like it, give one of us a ring. If you like, we can even arrange for a couple of us to meet you in a pub for an informal chat. We are a relaxed bunch and welcome all sorts - just as long as you enjoy social occasions and would like to be able to put something back in to the community a couple of times a year. We look forward to hearing from you.

My Next Door Hens

Community News

There are four hens in my neighbour’s garden, and although I was dubious (having been ankle-pecked as a child) about them being there when Jane next door asked if we minded, they are quite charming. Even if one has had Houdini added to her name for obvious reasons, and Shy Baby is no longer Shy. The day I returned Houdini from our side to hers, and could only count two others, was dreadful. We were almost in mourning when Jane returned and revealed that one was making a nest in a bush we can’t see from our side... And they love a delicately crushed snail. Very good for the garden. The best thing is the soothing noise they make in the morning. And if you happen to get up very early, at the noise of the back door, they ask “Cluck-wherrk-carrnu-let-us-out-poourrk-kkk?” Jane Moreton

Happy New Year from the Friends of Bewdley Museum.

It only seems a few weeks since we were planning 2009, the reopening of the new-look museum, our projects for the year and the extremely successful “Every Other House” pub exhibition. As we roll into 2010, I wonder what the year will hold for us. Here in Bewdley we are tremendously lucky to have the new-look, improved – but not spoilt - museum. This achievement is down in no small part to the people of Bewdley. What do you want from your museum this year? I know it matters to a lot of you, because so many of you use and enjoy it. It is time now for our Annual Subscriptions to be paid. At only £5 a year what better way to feel part of our town. Perhaps it could be your New Year Resolution to get more involved in your local area, and what better way to start than joining the Friends. My last article in the Bridge brought forward a “handyman” volunteer – thank you so much. Perhaps you always wanted to volunteer but never got round to it. There is no time like the present; next year will be here before you know it. Call Carol Mathieson now on 01299 400386 and she will be delighted to hear from you. People do really respond to these articles in the Bridge, and I would like to thank the Bridge team for all their hard work and dedication to providing a wonderful service to the town and surrounding area. If you want people to know about it – put it in the Bridge. So I have put it in the Bridge. If you want to get involved then make the phone call now and we will look forward to meeting you. Penny Griffiths Chair The Friends of Bewdley Museum.

J a nu a r y i n t h e Fo re s t

Happy New Year, dear readers! It is customary at this time to look back over the past year and take stock before launching into the new one. Since my remit in this article is the forest and the Grow With Wyre landscape scheme, which includes 4,600 hectares of farmland around the forest too, I will attempt to cover it all.

The landscape of the forest itself has become much more open in many areas. Drastic thinning in discrete enclosures and vegetation management along rides will have a wonderfully beneficial effect on the biodiversity of the forest. In the summer, several butterfly identification training events were held for local volunteers and early results from their surveys and the work of Butterfly Conservation suggest an increase in breeding success and range of species – an excellent result for this project management.

160 trees have been planted in seven orchards, old and new, and seven more orchards are due to be restored this season. This initiative has added to knowledge about the rare Noble Chafer beetle and the other invertebrate life of orchards. Research is going on all the time thanks to the work of the Wyre Forest Study group and others, and next year records can begin to be gathered centrally using the databank of the New Discovery Centre (a magnificent new facility for the community). Soon we will all be able to log on and rejoice at local sightings of Hobbies, Lemon Slugs, Cave Spiders and Snow Fleas and perhaps be inspired to go looking for them!

You will be very welcome on the first Walk in the Woods of the year on 16th January from 10.30am to 1pm, meeting at the Visitor Centre. There will be a short drive into the forest followed by a walk of up to 4 miles taking in some of the best sights of winter. Please book on 01299 266929/266944. The cost is ÂŁ5.00 per person (adults only) and there will be three more walks during the year. Linda Iles Forestry Commission

Women’s Section Royal British Legion Bewdley Branch

After a request for parcels for our brave troops in Afghanistan, Bewdley Branch launched an appeal for items to send. With the support of the Wyre Forest Friendship Centre and Habberly Women’s Institute we have to date been able to send 75 parcels, which have been gratefully received. As one of the letters of thanks asked for cakes we are now collecting these to be sent before Christmas. At the Worcestershire County Conference Saturday 21st November, we were delighted to receive four cups and a certificate of merit. This continues a proud record of service and achievement as a small branch, gaining awards for the past 12 years. It has been decided that, building on this tradition, we need to increase our membership, as the need for funds to support the families of our wonderful service personnel continues to grow with the current conflict in Afghanistan. If you would like further information about our branch please contact Monica 01562 753162 or Jackie 01299400363

Bewdley Museum

Bewdley Museum's Xmas Fayre was a huge success – 1,693 visitors to the museum in just four hours. Kids loved the Santa's Grotto & craft activities. What a fantastic end to a brilliant year! Over 100,000 people have enjoyed the museum in 2009.

Thank you to everyone who has helped and shared in our success. Another exiciting and varied programme is planned for 2009; the museum re-opens on 2nd April 2010.

Welcome to the New Year and a series of short articles on practical projects to enhance the garden. So, to start, despite it being January, it’s time to assemble a few tools and then subdue rampant wisteria into a flowering beauty. This vigorous climber when mature has great weight and so we need to consider both supporting mechanisms and pruning. Support may be from a trellis or more likely wire, vine eyes and strainer bolts, all of which should be sufficiently robust to load carry over a long time. Pruning is required twice a year and it doesn’t really matter if you start the process in January or August. At this time of the year it’s easy to see the plant structure without the hindrance of its foliage. First decide where you want the plant to go and tie in long new shoots to achieve the effect or where old branches need replacing. Secondly remove all tendrils that are not needed right back to a flowering spur. All that is required on the flowering spur are the fat buds that will flower in May. Tidy up, don’t fall off the ladder and wait for the racemes to develop. After your August holiday there will be a profusion of new shoots growing at a prodigious rate. Cut them back to about a foot long or about 6 leaf joints from its start. These will spurt again so there is a need for a little more trimming until the end of autumn. Then you can ignore it until the first of January and wait for the display to be, hopefully, the envy of your neighbours. Stuart Williams

Save the Children Lunches

Many thanks to all who supported my recent lunches - we raised an amazing £1,200 for Save the Children over the two events. Raffle prizes were won by Mary Gregory, Mary Ware, Eric Rowland, Mary Wood and Stephanie Barnes, Gwyneth Lloyd, Wynne Brine, Ann Matthews, Wanda James, Janet Eglesfield. In addition, my thanks to all for your amazing support for my home baked cakes in the St Anne’s church centre coffee shop, which have made a further £1,000 over the year. Looking forward to your continued support in 2010, hope you all have a great Christmas and New Year. Cate Gillespie

Welsh Gate

Thank you to Sheila Ward for writing to us with her ideas for improving both the air quality and traffic congestion in Welsh Gate. Her idea, which she suggested a number of years ago, is for all traffic coming down Welsh Gate to turn left and then go towards Dog Lane where a new roundabout would be built. In effect, it would be similar to the traffic scheme adopted at Catchems End. We have forwarded her letter to the Town Council.

“I never travel without my diary. One should always have something sensational to read in the train.” Oscar Wilde “All me life flashed before me eyes” (disappointed) “It was really borin’.” Babs, ‘Chicken Run’ I have diaries for appointments and reminders, although my attitude towards them changes as the year passes. I begin with a plan to have some kind of record of my life, and inevitably end up boring myself to tears by mid-March. Fortunately some people persevere with keeping diaries and some of these become books to be enjoyed by the rest of us. A library is an ever-changing record of human experience, containing the products of academic and artistic endeavour and increasingly touching other aspects of our lives by offering courses, technology and leisure pursuits. Public interests and needs influence the provision libraries make; when people tell us what they want, they get the opportunity to leave a mark, however small, in the record of our collective experience. Not borin’ at all. Happy New Year! Kay Sanderson, Bewdley Library

A. Did you notice that cormorant the other month.? Quite happy he was; sitting by the river in the middle of all the swans and seagulls. B. You mean that black bird that looks like a small penguin on a diet? A. That’s the one. He hung around, by the bridge, for some time. Completely out of place, but seemingly quite at home. B. Funny, that. You’d think he’d miss the company of the other cormorants. A. Reminds me of when I first came to Bewdley, some thirty-five years ago. A complete fish out of the water, I was. The Midlands was a new experience for me, with their “We’ma goin’ to Kiddy”. B. I know what you mean. When we moved here, thought it a right dump, and we would stick it for a couple of years, then move on back to Cheltenham. A. Yet here we are four decades later. Why? B. Well, the wife and I liked the community spirit here. We got involved with the churches, the carnival, youth work and school activities. We’d miss all that if we moved away. A. I’m just amazed at just how much is going on in the town these days. B. Which reminds me. I must rush off now, I’m helping out at the museum.

A day in the life...

Many of you will already know me as Wendy, the manager of the Sue Ryder Charity shop in the town. Having lived and worked in Bewdley for most of my adult life, it was quite an honour to be asked to contribute to the Bridge by Margaret. For those who tuned into the T.V. programme “Mary Queen of Charity Shops” you might have been fooled into thinking that it was not a true picture of what really goes on. And you’d be right......that was just a watered down version! Even after twelve memorable years at the shop, experience and knowledge mean next to nothing when faced with a daily dose of mayhem and mishaps of epic proportions. O.K. perhaps that’s a slight exaggeration, but not much. It’s not difficult to bring to mind certain incidents that with all the best will in the world refuse to go away. But one that takes me back is an occasion when recruiting a new volunteer in the fold. With the promise of plenty of tea and hobnobs, we got down to the serious business of training. Having spent the obligatory ten minutes on health & safety, fire evacuation and manual handling we moved on swiftly to the importance of customer care. Now I have always prided myself for being open and honest when helping a customer choose an outfit. “It’s not all about getting a sale” I stressed to the newby, “our customers expect an honest opinion”. “Trust me”, I said with a smug smile. The ideal opportunity to put this theory to the test arose when a regular customer appeared from the changing room wearing a dress that was quite obviously two sizes too small for her curvy figure. With a knowing look at the bemused volunteer and an air of superiority that comes with years of experience, I cast a critical eye over the offending garment. “A lovely dress madam”, I said, with a fixed grin still in place, “but such a pity it’s too tight.” There was a stony silence and a pregnant pause and then through gritted teeth she hissed. “This is my dress, the one I tried on is hanging up in the changing room.” Guess who’s going to charm school! Till next time.Wendy

BEWDLEY CHRISTMAS LIGHTS FESTIVAL

A very big 'thank you' to all those who took part, helped or attended; it was another wonderful day with thousands of people in the town, some coming from many miles away who intend to visit again. Once more Bewdley can be proud of its support for charities and local organisations. This year we had even more music & entertainment, dancing, singing, bands, fairground organs; in fact everything you would expect to give that festive atmosphere - even the chestnuts roasting on an open fire! Sunshine Radio with their double decker bus was a welcome new addition to the day’s festivities and we have asked them to return again next year. Also new for this year was the exhibition of Advent Wreaths in St. Anne's Church; these were all produced by local churches, organisations etc., and all reflected their particular group. We were delighted with the number of participants; they looked wonderful. We are sure you will not mind us mentioning Santa who once again found time to visit us. A special mention for the Carnival Princesses in the wonderfully lit tuk-tuk, the children in fancy dress and particularly those children who formed the nativity pageant. As we are sure everyone is aware the day’s events were organised and funded by the Bewdley Christmas Lights Festival Committee and we now have a website www.bewdleychristmaslightsfestival.org which we hope from early in 2010 will be available to businesses for advertising - please contact us if you require further details. Finally we would like to wish everyone a very happy & peaceful New Year and look forward next year's event, which we expect to be on Saturday 27th November. The Bewdley Christmas Lights Festival Committee (Ray, Ann, Maggie, Lynne, Alan, Roy & Ken)

Winter Training

The river has been so high in the last few weeks that very little rowing has been happening! We joke about ‘How long to Stourport’ or ‘Worcester in 10 mins’ but with the water so fast and swirly, it would be unsafe to be out! So it’s Winter Training…running, circuit training and ergos (indoor rowing machines). ‘Circuits’ is either great fun or a form of torture, depending on your point of view! A group of increasingly hot people moves around a hall doing different exercises for a timed interval. Week on week, it is possible to feel a gradual improvement, as well as a few aches!! The ergo machines offer constant information as to speed (not fast enough!!) and distance (not far enough!!), but again improvement can be measured so that when the water allows we are ready to row! You may be entitled to a tax refund. TOWN COUNCIL NEWS

Community News

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 30th NOVEMBER 2009

Severn Trent and National Grid Utility Works in Bewdley Town Centre

The Council and local traders met with representatives of Severn Trent, National Grid and Enterprise who are the contractors for the renewal of water and gas mains in Load Street and the High Street. The work is now planned to start on 11th January and will proceed over five phases until 7th May. This will involve a series of diversions and road closures and inevitable disruption. However, the work has to be done given the pipes are up to 100 years or more old and water leaks are becoming common. We were pleased to learn that there should be plenty of publicity to remind everyone that despite the works going on, Bewdley shops and businesses will remain fully open for business throughout. Allotments

The Council considered a request from a group of residents for the provision of some allotments in Bewdley. There are none at the present time, which is perhaps surprising given the size of our local population, which at the last census in 2001 was 10,869. The proposal was based not just on allotments being a source of locally grown quality food, but as well, they could encourage good neighbourliness and also help the environment. The Council agreed to research the issue noting the need to identify a suitable piece of land and also the cost of purchase and management. Waste Management in Worcestershire

Worcestershire County Council is inviting comments upon a new strategy for dealing with household and commercial waste up until 2027. With the need to divert more waste from landfill and to recycle a greater proportion of what we throw away, there will have to be new facilities across the County including household waste recycling sites. The Council agreed to look at how this might impact on Bewdley in more detail in the New Year.

War Memorial

Back in 1997 there had been a suggestion of illuminating the War Memorial by St Anne’s Church, but problems over installation of an electricity supply and the cost had prevented anything from going ahead. The Council agreed that now was the time to take another look at how any problems could be solved, as an improved means of commemorating those who had given their lives for their country in times of conflict. Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall are: 4 January, 1 February, 1 March, 6th April and 4th May 2010. Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall and Load Street Car Park, in the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk.and on the My Parish page of www.worcestershire.gov.uk TOWN COUNCIL NEWS IS PRODUCED AND PUBLISHED BY BEWDLEY TOWN COUNCIL

Situated at the top of the town the Welch Gate Guest House and cafe bar incorporating the WG's Pizzeria & Char Grill, (formerly the ‘Pack Horse Inn & Old Posting House' from the 1600’s) is a traditional, family run cafe. If you require a mouth-watering beef stew with a slice of bread and butter with a mug of tea, baked beans on toast, or a baked potato, then just pop up the town and a warm welcome awaits you. Sit down and the owner Linda will take you order, her husband Steve will cook it. Relax with a paper, chat to your friends or the next table, then without delay, your piping hot food will soon be with you. No frills - just good old-fashioned home cooking.

So you may be sharing your table with a local builder, or watching the world go by through the window overlooking the church, or just nestling into a corner table with a good book, having a mug of coffee with a slice of toast.

The WG's Pizzeria offers a chicken platter, gammon steak or burgers with chips, jacket potato or a salad bowl. You could also ring your order in and collect it later; so after a long day at work, just collect and enjoy at home.

The menu is vast: from mega breakfasts, omelettes, quiche, garlic bread, pizza, and rump steaks to sandwiches. They also serve a Sunday lunch from £6.00. This restaurant is fully licensed and on those warm days has a super garden seating area. So if you expect good quality, you won't be disappointed.

Overheard at the Bus Stop - Part 2

A. You know that cormorant I told you about the other day.? A few months ago, there he was sitting by the river in the middle of all the swans and seagulls. B. Yes, I remember - looked like he settled in for the duration. A. Funny, I never thought he’d stay that long. B. You’d think he’d miss the company of the other cormorants. A. There’s no competition for food from other cormorants here. B. Bit lonely though. Reminds me of me when I first retired. Missed my work mates something awful. Sitting at home; no-one to chat to. A. Funnily enough, that’s why I go out on the bus. It gets me out of the house. B. How many more people are like that? A. I often see the same faces on the bus. Don’t speak to no-one. B. And it’s going to get worse – what with the growing ageing population. Do you know – there’s more over sixty-fives than there are young people. A. Doesn’t bear thinking about. The thing I hate, is coming home at night to an empty house; and it’s cold, dark and uninviting; and the tele ain’t much company. B. You’ll have me in tears in a minute. Come on let’s have a cuppa in the …………

Rugger News

Community News

On Sunday 22nd November 2009, David Bissett, Myles Henderson, Henry Cook and James Turner of the Bewdley School & Sixth Form Centre represented Worcestershire County at Rugby. The U14 Worcestershire team defeated Greater Birmingham 7 – 0.

Across all the age groups, more than 25 Bewdley School boys and girls play rugby for Kidderminster Carolians(KCRFC). Such is the level of interest, a school link agreement has now been agreed and KCRFC will be sponsoring a set of rugby shirts for the school team with the KCRFC and community link logo. Any boys or girls interested in playing mini and junior rugby for KCRFC can contact the Chairman - Pete Cook on 07785 221831.

More about ringing ....

As a former trainspotter and a bellringer, I am aware of the similarities between the two breeds. The former have their books (Ian Allan), with their lists of numbers, and they underline each one as they see it. The latter have their books (Dove's "Guide to the Church Bells of Britain”) and they travel round the country underlining each tower as they ring at it. When I retired, I organised a mid-week group of ringers to travel round Worcestershire ringing at the towers I had not previously visited. Two towers in the morning, a pub lunch, another tower after lunch – it was going to take about two years to complete. Recently, we went further afield, for a university friend of mine living in Staffordshire has installed a light ring of bells in his garage (yes, ringers even go that far – their equivalent of the model railway perhaps....) and we planned a visit. And as one of our ringers is Mark Moreton, we even managed a diversion to ring at Stafford, where Mark had been Rector over twenty years ago. It was a new tower for him, as he was not a ringer in those days). So a trip back into the past for at least two of us. Mike Robinson
