Best design website award

Bewdley Baptist Church has been awarded the best design website by the Baptist Union of Great Britain. Over 2,000 Baptist Churches were asked to put forward their website with a shortlist being drawn up and members of all churches throughout the country being able to vote on-line.

“I am delighted to have won this award and believe that it is a great shop window on our church,” said the pastor Simon Harry. “Tucked away behind a 16th century cottage in High Street you will find a modern vibrant church. Our website has been designed to reflect this, as many could be deceived by their first impressions.”

The website was put together by David Glenn, one of the church’s deacons, and Richard Hand of Bewdley based TDM, a specialist computer software development and training company.

“Our church is part of the community and we have many regular activities to support families within the town,” said David Glenn. “The website was designed to enable anyone to find what goes on and when. There are events for mums and dads and their children, young people and senior citizens – all shown on our web site.” Changed Lives

“One area that we will be constantly developing is called Changed Lives” added Simon. “This is where members of our congregation can say how God works in their lives. The people who come to our church are from all ages and walks of life and all have very different experiences of their journey with God.”

The award was announced at the Baptist Union annual conference in Bournemouth and a glass engraved mouse presented to Simon Harry at a recent Heart of England Baptist Association meeting. www.bewdleybaptist.org.uk

Smiley Town

No, you’re OK; I’m not going to tell you about it. I’ve experienced too many of those interminable afternoons when after the returned holiday-maker’s seventy-fifth photo of a stretch of shingle with a piece of leg emerging from bottom-left, one wonders if surreptitiously setting fire to the talker’s sofa is a feasible proposition. No, I’m not going to inflict something like that on my readers; I was just going to say that seeing another country’s tourist towns made me look afresh at our town. I’m looking out now at a very wet Bewdley on Carnival morning reflecting how disappointed a lot of people are going to be when they wake up, (it is very early) and how much I hope that many months of hard work will be rewarded with a let-up in the rain later.

For that, I suspect, is what makes a tourist town successful. It is the unpaid, often unrecognised, efforts of scores of people who make the metaphorical corners of the town’s mouth turn up. The organisers of events like the carnival, or the Pub and Club Regatta (pictures of both events in our colour pages) are, to our shame, often taken for granted; as are the volunteers who keep the large number of organisations going in our town. I know – because The Bridge is run by volunteers – that it can be extraordinarily rewarding, and I’d recommend anyone with a bit of time to look around for a voluntary gap that needs filling - you can find plenty of opportunities in this month’s Bridge. But now, for putting a smile on Bewdley’s face and making it a place our visitors keep coming to, I would personally like to say,

“Thank you, volunteers!”

From The Pulpit

St. Benedict, Patron Saint of Europe

When I became a Catholic I took Benedict as my confirmation name. His feast falls this month (11th). He was born in Nursia c. 480. This 6th century monk has a surprising relevance to us in 21st century. He studied in Rome during a time of decadence and decline and he was horrified by what he saw. Losing their connection with God, some people lived lives of hedonistic licence caring only about themselves and their own enjoyment. Others took to a very strict and world denying ascetic life, perhaps what we might call today religious fundamentalism. St. Benedict found a third way. He left Rome and started to live as a monk on a ledge in Subiaco. Gradually he gained a reputation for holiness and other monks came to him for direction. Then he left remote Subiaco and went to Monte Cassino on the road south of Rome where he formed a large number of monks into a community, transforming monasticism (living alone) into community living to the glory of God. In doing this he formed his rule that was to shape the face of monasticism across the whole of Europe and create what we now call European civilisation. It was these stable religious communities which enabled Europe to begin to flower after the “dark ages”. So today he points us in the right direction as we face similar problems to those of his time. Fr. Stephen Pimlott

Pete Postlethwaite stars as a man living alone in the devastated future world of 2055, looking at old footage from 2008 and asking: why didn’t we stop climate change when we had the chance?

Bewdley Transition Group, supported by Bewdley Development Trust in conjunction with Bewdley School & Sixth Form Centre are staging a free showing of the film at the school on Tuesday 14th July at 7.30 pm.

The twin issues of Climate Change and Peak Oil are at the heart of the Transition Group’s interest in looking at ways in which Bewdley could reduce its dependence on oil and become more sustainable as a community, including using locally grown food, as highlighted in the article by Gillian Raven in the last month’s magazine.

To complement this, Bewdley Development Trust is also delivering two pilot projects as a partner in the Grow with Wyre Landscape Partnership project. The first is aimed at setting up 3 low carbon communities to look at ways in which householders and business can reduce their energy use and carbon footprint, and the second is exploring the use of woodfuel, sourced locally, to power boilers in homes, businesses and community buildings.

A. Don’t they have such silly names for cars?

B. What makes you say that?

A. The other day I saw a car called a Legacy. Which made me think. A legacy’s “a thing handed down by a predecessor”. What will that car leave us? B. Well, for a start – cars have given me the freedom to go where I want, any time I want. A. If traffic jams will allow.

B. It’ not always like that. Cars make it convenient for me to nip down the road for my shopping; for instance.

A. What’s wrong with walking? Do you need to drive to buy a newspaper?

B. Well, no. But you know what I mean. A car’s more than that. It fulfils my dreams. I’ve always wanted a car that reflects my life style; a bit of status.

A. So you get a car named after a holiday resort, or an Indian tribe, or a horse? So what price your bit of “status”? Pollution, clogged towns, tarmac jungles? B. Now you’re just cynical.

A. But shouldn’t car manufacturers be more honest?

B. But think of the great evocative car names – Mustang, Silver Ghost, Mini …

A. You mean “Great CD Player”, “Gadgets Galore”, “Poor MPG”, “Alloy Wheels Only” more like.

B. What do you suggest then? “Traveldodge” for those who fiddle the company car, or don’t pay their car tax; “From A 2 B” for the ECO lot who just want an ordinary car with no pezass, “Boom Banga Bang” for thoughtless youngsters?

A. Now who’s being cynical? Any way; why are you catching the bus today? B. To be honest, I’m trying to be more ……………… A. Here’s the 2A.

GOOD NEWS ……..for a change

Let’s give the public some good news for a change. They are sick of hearing about the sleaze of politicians ripping off the nation with their fictitious expense claims; it makes us lose faith in human nature. So here’s news about people who give up their time to help their fellow human beings without looking for any financial return or publicity. The organization is located in an office above St Anne's Church Load Street Bewdley. It is set up to help those members of the local community have difficulty in getting to hospitals, Doctors, Dentists, some essential shopping, or just to visit relations in our area. We also have a wheelchair car for passengers who use wheelchairs. It is called COMMUNITY TRANSPORT HELPLINE. It has two part time employees and over 50 volunteers who use their own vehicles to transport people at a price they can afford. The drivers are a dedicated group of men and women who will take them, stay with them if necessary at hospitals or Doctors, help them with their shopping, and look after them like a member of their own family. It is a fantastic organization. As one of the drivers, I know that I enjoy meeting people and get satisfaction from it. We are always looking for more drivers in rural areas. Can you help? Letters to the editor

Hi, I just wanted to say what a brilliant web site you have put together for the Bridge. I usually get to read the hardcopy when visiting my father-in-law but since my photo is in the latest (in shiny armour top left photo inside back cover!) as part of Wythe Retinue I took a look. Best wishes from all of Wythe Retinue who had a wonderful weekend. We got involved because Sir Thomas Wythe for whom the group is named was probably responsible for recruiting the Bewdley Men for the Battle of Tewkesbury, which of course led to the granting of the Charter in the first place. Historical Re-enactors do what we do to gain a more personal insight into History and you can not get more personal than this event for us. My wife is a direct descendant of Sir Thomas, her father still lives in Bewdley and it would be hard to get more personal than that. Regards, Geoff McWhirter

July Holiday?

Statistics say that July can be both our warmest and wettest of the summer months but, as we all know, a combination of warmth and humidity is perfect for encouraging and spreading plant diseases. All of your hard work in growing annuals will now be rewarded by marvellous splashes of colour, but to keep them flowering, dead-head, water and feed where necessary.

The greenhouse will need to be kept moist and possibly shaded; tomatoes should now be giving fruit and will need feeding every 10 days or so. Aphids are now competing with you to destroy flower, fruit and vegetables alike; keep an eagle eye open for infestations and remove by your favourite method as soon as possible. Watering is likely to be one of the most labour intensive jobs of the month, so before a drought sets in make sure you have enough water butts around to beat a hose pipe ban.

July is said to be the best month for propagation. There are many ways to do this: cuttings, grafting, layering and division, and even sowing collected seeds. If you grow too many plants there’s always the opportunity to exchange with other gardeners later or even give a few away. Keep the lawn cut and watered, and enjoy the weather while you think about how it all might look next year. Stuart Williams

forget the gym get really active

You move to a new area and you have a new job to settle in to, a new home to find and perhaps schools to sort out for the kids. Once the initial hard work is over, you then start to think about how to meet people and build a social circle. Or perhaps you have been in the area for a long time but would like to expand your horizons? If you’re interested in coming along to a couple of evenings so see if you like it, give one of us a ring. If you like, we can even arrange for a couple of us to meet you in a pub for an informal chat. We are a relaxed bunch and welcome all sorts - just as long as you enjoy social occasions and would like to be able to put something back in to the community a couple of times a year. We look forward to hearing from you.

How I ca me to Bewdley 3

....

I came to Bewdley because when my fiancée Albert Ward, who lived in Bewdley, asked my father for his permission for us to be married, Dad said, ”show me the roof and I’ll show you my daughter’s hand.” Needless to say, this is now a “family saying”! We found Flat One, 4 Load Street, a one bedroomed flat with kitchen and shared bathroom over Barbara Crampton’s hairdressing salon. We loved living there; it was £3 per week rent, my salary then being, as a railway clerk in the age of steam, £7.50 per week. The arrival of our first son, Scott, necessitated a move to a home with a garden and we bought our first property. I remember the fishermen every weekend waking us up at the crack of dawn, slamming car doors as they parked outside for the day on Sundays.

In the night sometimes the Fire Brigade would wake us up with a start. The Fire Station was situated in what is now Bewdley Museum. The Firemen would arrive on motorbikes, push bikes and running feet to get the engine quickly away. I remember the children from Lax Lane School chattering & laughing on their way home. I remember Sir Gerard Nabarro waving at us watching from our window as he walked by in the Mayor’s Parade. I also remember the wise words of one of my husband’s family members on our wedding day: “When you live in Bewdley, don’t talk to anyone about anyone in Bewdley, because they are nearly all related to you now.” It was true, they are an old Bewdley family with branches & twigs of their family tree everywhere around.

This year is our Golden Wedding year. I bless the day my friend at Stourbridge High School for Girls asked me if I would write to a soldier in Germany, as he hadn’t a penfriend. He was Albert Ward, serving in the 1st Royal Dragoons and his home was Bewdley. I wrote, we met and here we are. Sheila Ward

Pub & Club Reggata

The sun rose in a cloudless blue sky on May 30th, shortly followed by members of Bewdley Rowing Club, who were preparing for a Pub n Club Regatta of record proportions. 63 crews entered this year and raced in Men’s, Ladies’ and Mixed crews, some with imaginatively unmentionable names. The winning crew members in each category were presented with a ‘Pot’ and won a year’s membership of the Rowing Club.

A new departure this year was the Charity Final:- a one-off race between 2 scratch crews drawn from boats which had been knocked out. The oarsmen and women paid for the opportunity to row again in a straight final. The day was a huge success with around 3,000 people watching, and the town buzzing with Regatta Atmosphere. Next year’s event is planned to be even more spectacular!!

Carnival

Oh dear, what a soggy mess we all were at the annual Carnival! After a year’s planning and organisation the day was spoilt by horrendous rain for the whole of the day. The decision to scrap the admission charges to encourage people to come on to the carnival field was made in the morning, and quite a few very brave people did venture onto the field to see what was left of the entertainment schedule. The Punch and Judy show and the Hereford and Worcester Salsa dancing were held in the leisure centre. We would very much like to thank the people that did come out in the rain to watch the parade and to hand over the pennies that we really need to be able to put on the carnival again next year. If anybody would like to make a donation towards next year’s carnival please phone Sue on 01299 401841

Food Focus

Over the twenty years we have been established in Bewdley, we have built up a good rapport with our suppliers. We are always on the look out for local growers to supply us with their produce. Last year we had an evening out to Chapel Farm in Little Witley, who has been supplying asparagus, strawberries and raspberries to us for about five years. We were made very welcome by Andrew Owen who owns the farm, his wife Susan and their son Phillip, and the women’s institute group we tagged along with on the back of a trailer pulled by tractor around the farm! Andrew’s family took on the farm back in 1938, and they have been growing asparagus for the last 25 years. They started with two and a half acres of asparagus but now have up to 80 acres. As well as supplying ourselves and other local farm shops, they also belong to a larger group called Western Asparagus growers, who supply two of the major supermarket chains. When they started growing asparagus, the season used to last for 6-8 weeks, but due to modern techniques, poly tunnels and later varieties they now get a 10-12 week season. The two main varieties they have are Gijnlim (pronounced gainlim!) and Backlim. Their strawberries start the 2nd/3rd week of June, mainly due to waiting for the asparagus harvest to be over. Varieties of these are Symphony, Florence and Albion. The raspberry season starts in July, but they have planted an earlier variety, which will be ready in June next year. They have also got some cherry trees in, but the fruits on these will not be forthcoming for another couple of years! Next door to the Owens, are Haven nurseries, which we hope to write about next month. They grow all our tomatoes; vine tomatoes, plum tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, yellow tomatoes (lots of different tomatoes!) and these are available in Bewdley Farm Shop from April to October. So as the sun is beating down and Wimbledon is on the telly, don’t forget the local strawberries and cream!) and the last of the asparagus!

Salad dressing

The sun has finally come out so why not try this traditional recipe.

One of my favourite games at the Wyre Forest Discovery Centre involves wool “caterpillars” of different colours, which schoolchildren have to catch to feed their nestlings. The bright colours (red, blue and yellow) are easy to find but the green and brown ones less so. It’s a good demonstration of the effectiveness of camouflage but begs the question why there are some obvious caterpillars too. The Cinnabar Moth is a case in point. The larva’s orange and black stripes make it stand out on the ragwort plants, which it eats, but the alkaloids, which it ingests from the same plants, make it poisonous. It therefore has a different strategy and uses its bright colours to warn off predators. Still on the Lepidoptera theme, this is the month to look out for Silver-washed Fritillaries in the forest. The females fly along open, sunny rides while the males circle them in courtship flights. There are a few places in the forest where you may be rewarded with the sight of a White Admiral butterfly – oddly-named as it is dark brown but with a white band across all four wings. This species feeds mainly on honeysuckle.

Butterflies are easy to identify and a fantastic new leaflet showing most of the species, which you are likely to see in and around the Wyre Forest is available at the Forestry Commission Visitor Centre at Callow Hill for the bargain price of 50p. Dr Jenny Joy of Butterfly Conservation says, 'the Wyre Forest is one of my favourite places in the region as it is just such a fantastic place to see butterflies, especially the rarer fritillaries. We urgently need more local people to become involved in the survey and monitoring of them so we know just how abundant or rare they are and can target future management effort in the most appropriate places'. If you are interested in helping us with this exciting project to survey butterflies in the Grow With Wyre scheme area there is a FREE Butterfly Workshop to teach identification skills on Saturday 18th July from 10.30am to 4.00pm at

the Wyre Forest Discovery Centre. Book by contacting Pete Boardman on 01743 852119 or pete@field-studies-council.org. Each training day will be led by Mike Williams and Rosemary Winnall and will involve a session indoors and fieldwork in the forest, so bring outdoor clothing, waterproofs, stout shoes and a packed lunch. July is a great time to enjoy the outdoors and there is a Dusk Walk for adults on 4th July starting at 9pm at the Visitor Centre.

Wild in Wyre is a week of fun and adventure for 8 – 11 year olds from 27th to 31st July, with shelter-building, camp cookery, and making bows and arrows. It costs £60 per child – ring 01299 266929 for more information. The school holidays have events every Tuesday and Friday starting with:

Vicious Vikings 24th July, 10.30am – 12.00noon. £3.50 per child, booking essential;

Dinosaur Trail 28th July, any time from 10.30am – 12.00noon. £3.50 per child, no need to book;

Forest Open Day 31st July, any time from 11.00am to 3.00pm. £1 per activity.

All our events are in the Events ’09 leaflet.

‘In this inclusive school, every child does matter’ Ofsted December 2008

The Bewdley School & Sixth Form Centre received its Ofsted report and was delighted that, after one year, leadership and management, personal development, well-being, care, guidance and support were praised by Ofsted and already seen as good features of the newly founded school.

Learners were praised for behaviour and their positive relationships – ‘Students are proud of their school and enjoy learning’.

The leadership and management of the school was described as ‘inspirational and practical’ and praised by Ofsted for setting a ‘clear direction with a strong focus on raising achievement and standards’.

Ofsted acknowledged that the 2008 GCSE results were above the national average and, in the case of Science and Modern Foreign Languages ‘significantly above the national average’. However, they felt ‘because of the newness of the school, it is too early for the impact of many strategies to have significant impact’. After a year and a term following re-organisation, the Headteacher felt that the report was realistic and its findings matched exactly those of the school’s self-evaluation. She praised the work of colleagues and the support of pupils and parents.

Community News

Dear Readers,

I write this just a few days before Bewdley carnival. The late May heat wave of the past few days has cooled to a pleasant warmth, which I am hoping will last into the weekend. It is very nice to be a spectator in the baking sun, refreshed by squirts from water pistols in the hands of heavily disguised kids on the passing floats, but for those of us walking the route it is far better just to be naturally ‘cool’.

I have been involved in the policing of the three main carnivals and most of the smaller ones in Wyre Forest for many years now, in fair weather and foul. It would be easy to think that after so many years the organisation and execution of these events is down to a fine art, but we are dealing with that unpredictable, irrational and constant variable, the Great British Public, about whom nothing can be assumed and nothing left to chance. For these events to take place there is almost year round preparation by the respective carnival committees; small bands of ordinary, unpaid townsfolk without whom you would have none of this.

These and the other annual parades that we have in Bewdley are like milestones in our lives, but it never seems like a year since the last one. I actually quite enjoy them, particularly the march past the Town Council in all their deep blue finery and polished brass. It’s very clever how they get that Mayor’s gown to fit such different sized bodies.

Neighbourhood Watch is steadily expanding

on our Local Policing area under the auspices of our Chair of PACT, Chair of Wyre Forest NHW and all-round good egg Mr. Rod Wilson, and our very efficient CSO Jeni Bray. If you have any interest in local crime (and we appreciate that many people do not because there are relatively few who are directly affected by crime in Bewdley), then join up. It costs nothing, and you will receive up to date bulletins on local incidents, vehicles and people of interest. All that we ask is that members reciprocate by keeping a look out (the ‘watch’ bit) and reporting to us anything suspicious in their area.

We are hopeful of being joined by a new CSO in July, who is currently undergoing training. I will introduce him to you as soon as he settles in. We may even benefit from a few more police officers in Bewdley as a result of an internal reshuffle. I’m not counting unhatched chickens or holding my breath as it just gives me a headache, but we can live in hope.

Our next PACT meeting is at a new venue, the Baptist Church in High St at 6.30 p.m. on Wednesday 9th September.

I hope this summer is a good one for us all. Enjoy it however you can.

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 8 June 2009

Senior Citizen Parking in Load Street Car Park

Councillors had received many complaints from Senior Citizens about being issued with Penalty Charge Notices when they parked in the short-stay Load Street car park next to the library and medical centre

using their parking season tickets. They learned that Wyre Forest District Council was currently conducting a review of this aspect, which would go before their Council in October. Riverside Amenities

Councillors were concerned about three separate matters affecting the use and enjoyment of the Riverside close to the Bridge:

(i) that the flower beds adjoining the river at Beales Corner (and also that at Welch Gate) were to be

grassed over. It was agreed that a letter should be sent to WFDC expressing disappointment at their action about which the Town Council had seemingly not been informed;

(ii) that there were continued examples of parking on and within the paved “civic circle” on Severnside South which was an important amenity area. Oil spillages were beginning to stain the stone paving. It was agreed to ask the Highways Dept of the County Council to extend the double yellow lines.

(iii) that the pedestrian underpass by the Old Toll House on the Wribbenhall side of the river was unsuit-

able for disabled and elderly people having to negotiate a high step to get access to the grassed area with its benches. The Council agreed to investigate legal ownership of the path and persuade whichever authority was responsible to improve the access Flood Prevention Matters

(i) Councillors learned that improvements were soon to take place to the highway drainage at Queensway

with extra channels being cut through the five speed tables and extra gullies being put in place to improve drainage from the highway. The highway culvert is also to be relined which should improve the flow of water.

(ii) However, Councillors remained concerned that the Riddings Book at Sandbourne could still rise above the concrete slab that acts as a crossing between Bewdley School and the Leisure Centre. The problem could be eased by removing debris blocking the culvert under the crossing and Councillors agreed to make urgent representations to the County Council for this to be done Bewdley Bridge Illumination

Having received some indication of likely costings for this project, the Council agreed that a Working Group should be set up to look at outside sources of funding for this worthwhile project

Future Town Council meetings: 3 August, 1 September, 5 October

Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are on the Notice Boards outside the

Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall and Load Street Car Park, in the library and the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk.and on the My Parish page of www.worcestershire.gov.uk

We have therefore decided to send “shoe box parcels” to our brave service people and hope this will become a County initiative. If you would like to join us in this venture please contact Monica 01562 753162 or Anne 01299 402204 Future events: Under the Arches Sale Saturday 11th July. A date for your diary; Saturday 7th October Harvest Supper fundraising event at Pound Green/Button Oak Hall. Watch out for details. Christian Aid

Although the Christian Aid collection for this year was lower than that of 2008 it is gratifying to have sent ÂŁ1,650.78 to help people who are suffering disasters in so many parts of our world.

Thank you to all who gave to help raise this total – especially to all those who gift-aided donations and so enable Christian Aid to reclaim tax. To all the people who did the collecting a very big thank you is expressed – your help & commitment really is greatly appreciated.

All Saints' and Wribbenhall Together

"The All Saints' Swap Shop", "Aid for the Older Person Day", "Barnardo's Day", "All Saints' Credit Crunch Life Line Day", "Parent Support Day", " Emergency Services Day". Inspiring days, supporting people in need, providing much needed information & help. These have not been sponsored, organised & run by our District or County Councils; not promoted, co-ordinated or funded by a large charity or group of agencies; not situated in a building miles from Bewdley where car travel & car parking is at best frustrating, at worst enraging. No; they are not even expensive or requiring appointments or places to be booked. No; these are just some of the special days we at All Saints' Church in Wribbenhall have been running on a Monday as part of our ongoing community based, community support project "All Saints' & Wribbenhall Together". Where you able to join us? Are you one of those who have written such lovely comments in our Visitors Book? Are you planning to come along but just "not got round to it yet"? Well, whichever group you fall into you are welcome to join us, to come along and experience the renowned welcome of the Monday Girls as well as the top quality information provided. Do look for our coloured posters distributed

in and around Bewdley each week, or those on the Parish Room & our Church's notice board, or read our report on the Community page of "The Shuttle". Each will tell you which specialists have made themselves available the following Monday, ready & able to sort your concerns. Light refreshments are provided and it's all TOTALLY FREE. So no money or appointment is needed; just drop in at a time to suit your plans for a Monday, remembering we open 10.30am -3.30pm. We do look forward to meeting you on any Monday during July. Questions? Comments? Ring Pete 01562 635603 (week day/day time) / 07890 738 089.

All Saints' Wribbenhall Bingo

The excitement continues on the first and third Mondays of the month in Wribbenhall Community Centre on Shaw Hedge Road. The night starts at 7.00pm and ends at 9.00pm. It's a great night out, fun for all AND you can go away with lovely prizes. We look forward to seeing you there on: Monday 6th & 20th July and Monday 3rd & 17th August.

Stourport vintage steam rally

It has always been a great ambition of the Crump family to host a vintage steam rally from their farm for many years, so when Kidderminster sugar beet factory shut down, it was no longer practical for us to grow sugar beet any longer. We decided to grass all the land down making it a near perfect showground. Over the last 4 years we have managed to build a great display of steam engines, tractors, cars, vintage caravans, commercial and military vehicles, cycles and motor cycles. For this year’s rally we also have many attractions going on in the main arena. Saturday night has live bands Hot climate and The Big Cats. Gates open 10 till 5 both days, live music starts 8 till late both nights.

For further details contact Steve or Pat Crump on 01299 822032 or email s-o-svintagesteamrally@hotmail.co.uk.

What springs to mind when we think of Bewdley? For Herefordshire & Worcestershire Earth Heritage Trust, it is the fascinating geological story that it has to tell. A short account of the geology of the area can be found in the Trust’s newly published Geopark Way trail guide. This 109 miles walking trail passes through the town on its way from Bridgnorth to Gloucester through the Abberley & Malvern Hills Geopark. Included is Blackstone Rock, the red, dune-bedded sandstone which bears witness to the desert conditions existing in the area in the Permian period about 300 million years ago. There is more in our Explore Bewdley Town Geology and Building Stones trail and a similar one for the Severn Valley Railway. These guides are available from the Tourist Information Centre.

The Trust will be visiting Bewdley Museum with its ‘Rock & Fossil Roadshow’, which will include the ever popular ‘fossil making’ activity, on July 25th. We are also looking for local people of all ages to take part in our Heritage Lottery funded ‘Community Earth Heritage Champions’ project that has identified six sites in Bewdley to be studied and cared for. To find out more visit our website, www.EarthHeritageTrust.org or contact Eve Miles at the Geological Records Centre, University of Worcester, Tel: 01905 542014 or e-mail: e.miles@worc.ac.uk.

Holiday Fun at Bewdley Museum

Bewdley Museum has plenty of fun activities to keep children occupied over the summer holidays. A wide range of creative workshops offer craft based activities for boys and girls from ages 8 – 12. From ‘Megatistical Masks’ to ‘Hot Stuff’ enamelling, make sure you book early as places are limited. Visit www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk/museum for more information.

Additional activities will be advertised throughout the holiday period. Check the website and notice boards around the museum for details. Please call 01299 403573 if you wish to be added to our priority mailing list.

Have you been underground yet? Come to our 1940’s event on Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th July. Take a tour in our WWII Air Raid Shelter with one of our experienced Air Raid Wardens. Children can also make a gas mask, complete an identity card and create a postcard to send to someone special.

Aren’t jigsaws brilliant?

Think about it; they keep our brains stimulated from cradle to grave. They provide fun practice of fine motor, visual and spatial skills for our children, essential for their development of literacy. Adults enjoy them for relaxation (a virtuous alternative to TV), and there have been claims that jigsaws and other puzzles help keep our

brains functioning efficiently in our later years. At your library there is a monthly Jigsaw Swap, run along the same principle as our Magazine Swap – bring in your unwanted jigsaws (good condition please) and exchange for something different. And it’s free – another credit crunch buster! So whatever your taste in jigsaws – country cottages, baked beans or Homer Simpson – come along and have a look on the first Thursday of every month.

Music in the Gardens

Bewdley Festival.

The Friends of Bewdley Museum are delighted to announce that they have secured local talent Carrie Hayden to perform at the first Music in the Gardens on Sunday August 2nd. Carrie launched her CD “Yuki” at the Discover Bewdley Weekend in May. Over 200 people attended and 70 CDs were snapped up at the event sponsored by

This is a great example of local organisations working together to help local artists. Bewdley Open Studios is all about encouraging local artists and it is really rewarding that Music in the Gardens can help a local musician. The Friends sponsor the first afternoon in the series of five.

The Friends of Bewdley Museum hope that Bewdley residents and visitors will come along on Sunday 2nd August (2.00pm – 4.pm) to support Carrie and to perhaps find out more about joining the Friends or volunteering in the museum. Membership of the Friends is only £5 a year and enables us to put on such events as this. For more information on volunteering please call Carol Mathieson on 01299 400386. So dig out your picnic chairs, put the drinks on ice, cut up the sandwiches, and look forward to Sunday afternoons in the park throughout August.
