Share your school memories
Were you involved in any way with Wribbenhall First School (now Bewdley Primary School). If you were a pupil, member of staff or parent then why not share your memories and photographs with them.
The school is planning a display of memorabilia for everyone to come along and see at its Summer Fayre (see below). This will give you a chance to meet past and present pupils and staff and share your memories, as well as a time of fun and laughter. Opened in 1971 in Shaw Hedge Road, the school starts a new chapter in its life when it moves to larger and improved premises in Stourport Road in September.
“As both a former pupil and current teacher, I am really looking forward to meeting as many old friends as possible on the 3rd July” said Jacqui Bennett, Key Stage 1 teacher. If you would like to share your memories and copies of pictures (do not send originals) send them to :Susie Burrows (PTA) Bewdley Primary School Office, Shaw Hedge Road, Bewdley, DY121EH email : office@bewdleyprimary.worcs.sch.uk Tel : 01299 403796

Editorial
The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley. It is delivered free monthly to more than 4,600 homes
June – the month of Wimbledon, pony club gymkhanas, cricket matches and sundry other outdoor sporting events; not a good month for people like me who are more inclined to winter activities that involve fireside chair-sitting. Of course, there are the strawberries and cream, the cricket teas and the shooting sticks at showgrounds to take one’s mind off actually doing those sporty things. Best of all, one can read about them. I’m pretty good at that.
For those like me who prefer the sedentary to the active we have plenty of reading in this month’s Bridge. We’ll gloss over the rowing club – they’re asking us to take to the river and exercise – and concentrate on reading about those chatty grandfather clocks, the gardeners of Kidz First and the energetic litter-pickers in Wribbenhall. And, of course, some great pictures to look at and remind us of the Discover Bewdley weekend which was such a success.
It was lovely to see the town so lively and full of visitors coming to see the newlyrefurbished museum. If you haven’t seen the museum yet, do make the effort; you’ll be amazed at its transformation. As someone said to me, “It’s good to have somewhere so interesting to take one’s visitors when they come to stay”. I think we should congratulate everyone involved in the project. Also congratulations to all the other participants who gave their time and energy over the weekend; thank goodness the weather behaved itself on the whole and gave us some sunshine to tempt us out into the streets.
Well, I’m off now to get out the deck chairs. Whatever you find yourself doing in June, (and it’s OK if you want to do some sporty things) - do find time to sit and read your Bridge as well. Margaret Ashmore
St Anne’s goes to London Nearly 50 members of the St Anne’s congregation took a Saturday off to go and see some churches in London that have changed the layout of the church interior. Here they talk to the vicar, Dr Giles Fraser, outside St Mary’s, Putney. Watch out of the full story and more photographs in next month’s issue of The Bridge. Editor : Margaret Ashmore

Toilet issues are out of order!
A group of young people from Bewdley Baptist Church, have participated in a national campaign aimed at highlighting the injustice of water and sanitation issues. The campaign entitled: “Send A Seat” has been organised by the Youth Team at Tearfund, who are a leading Christian charity who are passionate about the local church bringing justice and transforming lives to overcome global poverty. The young people aged 13+, asked the members of their church to sign a toilet seat as a creative petition to say that they think that it is out of order that 5000 children die every day due to a lack of clean water and sanitation. The young people were able to collect over 80 signatures on their toilet seat which they presented to Dr Richard Taylor MP on Wednesday 8th April. To find out more about the issues of water and sanitation or to campaign yourself visit: youth.tearfund.org or www.soulaction.org

Bewdley Horticultural Society
If statistics are to be believed then June should be the sunniest and driest of the months but before you rush for the deck chair and sun glasses here are a few more gardening jobs. As you hack your way across the lawn don’t forget the swarms of insects that will fight you to ruin fruit, flower and vegetable; arm yourself and get your revenge in first; either chemically or organically. All the mulch you’ve been preparing over the year should be added to borders to improve soil and retain water. Your half hardy annuals should all be planted out, and bulbs lifted, cleaned and stored in a cool place. Those lovely
primroses can be divided and replanted; chrysanthemums stopped to promote bushy growth.
In the greenhouse keep the atmosphere moist and remove plants to cold frames to reduce the need for watering. June is an ideal time for propagating cuttings and also for pruning shrubs that have flowered.
Anything that bears fruit will now need a careful eye to manage crop production and curtail pests and diseases. Vegetable crops will be coming through for use: where possible sow on for more lettuce, radish, spring onions etc. and when all that is done, then you can get out the deck chair! Stuart Williams

In training for the Pub’n Club Regatta May 30th
Early May and the wooden Pub and Club boats come out on the river like blossom on the trees. They have been meticulously repaired and overhauled ready for the arduous month of training by inexperienced rowers, some of whom don’t know their bow side from their stroke side. The crews come from clubs, societies and pubs in and around Bewdley for a month’s crash (?) course of training and then a day of racing. Some have competed before, and some are totally new to the sport. In crews of four they train with a cox who has more experience of rowing than they do (they hope), and learn about riggers, blades, ergos and slides; followed by alcohol therapy! The winning crew will have free club membership for a year. Rowing is a marvellously inclusive sport. From age 11 upwards you can be on the river, whether it is in a sculling boat (where you have an oar in each hand) or rowing boat (one oar per person; with two, four or eight in a boat) or as a cox. ‘Grow your own’ in Bewdley!
Growing our own food is one of the most basic of human activities, linking us with a past need to provide for ourselves the absolute necessities of life. Today, with cheap food from around the world readily available, keeping an allotment is little more than an enjoyable hobby for a few, and yet this pattern is beginning to change. The increasing possibility of a crisis in oil supply along with concerns over sustainability and the quality of our food, is prompting many people to want to return to a pattern of more local dependence for our basic needs. This means, amongst other things, land for growing food being available for use in every local community. Bewdley, sadly, has no allotments of its own, previously existing ones having become the lovely and well used Jubilee Gardens in 1977, but there are other solutions. Land share
Community News
schemes are increasingly popular all over the country (see the inspiring www.rivercottage.net web site) and could work here in Bewdley too on a large or small scale. Allowing someone else to grow vegetables in a garden that is too big to manage, in exchange for a proportion of the produce, could be a great idea for some!
So, do you want land for vegetable growing? Have you any land in Bewdley that’s not in use, or a garden that is just that bit too large which you would be willing to share? Please contact me, Gillian Raven, (01299 401109) if the answer is yes to either of these! And, if you are interested in other local community sustainability issues please contact the Bewdley Development Trust, tel. 01299 405516, email info@bewdley.org.uk, or look at www.bewdley.org.uk. We would be delighted to hear from you. Gillian Raven
Twinning Association
2008/9 has been another year of outstanding activities with our German partner-town Vellmar; our partnership celebrations were held in Bewdley in mid-April this year. A fantastic weekend began on the Thursday night at Bewdley's Vhujon restaurant, which was booked out with just under a hundred revellers introducing our Vellmar friends to the new No.1 national dish. Friday featured a trip to Wales to, while younger members of the party were guests of the new Bewdley Youth Cafe on an outing to the Safari park followed by fish & chips. The town was buzzing with activity and colour, with flags and bunting everywhere, and some 500 Euros were taken. Activity continued on Sunday with a conducted tour of lesser known Bewdley; a Vellmar team took part in Bewdley Tennis Club's very sunny and pleasant 'Start of Season' tournament; and the visit culminated in a celebratory dinner with music attended by 140 people, at which the document of partnership between the towns was re-signed by past and present mayors. We are hopeful that this fantastic span of activity will enhance our profile and encourage more participation for younger people, schools, clubs and societies in the town and town businesses. The Twinning has managed to set aside some funds to help families with younger children participate in our activities - for more details phone 01299 403201 or 400580.

The Friends of Bewdley Museum welcome everyone
The new look Bewdley Museum is a result of a combination of joint funding and partners working together. Visitor responses to the changes have been overwhelmingly positive and this is a credit to the teamwork of everyone involved. Museum staff worked round the clock to ensure that just about everything was ready for the opening and Friends and volunteers joined together to help in everyway that they could. The team spirit leading up to Discover Bewdley was enormous and we hope that we can capture that feeling and take it with us into the future. With 6000 visitors in the first few days it is hard to imagine that there still might be local people who have not yet found their way around the museum. It is a truly enchanting gateway into the QEII gardens and time spent there would add to any visitor experience of Bewdley. There is also plenty for Wyre Forest residents, the new gallery very clearly tells the Bewdley Story in a new and easily understandable fashion. New Volunteers New volunteers are coming forward all the time and we welcome them and hope that they too will feel part of this treasure in the middle of the town. There are volunteer opportunities for stewarding the galleries, in

particular the Bewdley Story and during June in the Wyre Forest Gallery for the Bewdley Open Studios Exhibition fortnight. Training is available for new volunteers for guiding Brass Rubbing Sessions or facilitating the opening of the Air Raid Shelter. So whatever your interest, or availability we would love to welcome you to become a part of the team. One of the biggest changes has been to the café facility. The Friends first opened a very limited service with tea, coffee soft drinks and ice creams a few years ago. This was manned then entirely by volunteers with help from the museum assistants. The success of this led to the professional taking over of the facility. Thank You The Friends would like to thank everyone who over the years have volunteered or worked there providing refreshments to our visitors – you are all an important part of creating what we can enjoy today. The museum is free entry but your donations will be welcomed so that we can continue to improve the site and your experiences. So if you have not been to the museum yet, we look forward to seeing you there. Free Magazine Swap
The current harsh economic climate is affecting all of us to some degree, and one of the first steps for anyone beginning to feel the pinch is the sacrifice of a few luxuries. Someone once told me he’d spent eighteen pounds on magazines – not difficult, if you think about it. Here at the library in Bewdley we have a ‘Magazine Swap’ – bring in a magazine you’ve finished with, pop it in the basket, and take another one home. Make sure the magazine is in good condition (no biro-bearded cover girls with missing teeth, please) and fairly recent. For the price of one magazine, your reading potential is limitless. That’s one of the great things about libraries! Kay Sanderson

forget the gym get really active
You move to a new area and you have a new job to settle in to, a new home to find and perhaps schools to sort out for the kids. Once the initial hard work is over, you then start to think about how to meet people and build a social circle. Or perhaps you have been in the area for a long time but would like to expand your horizons? If you’re interested in coming along to a couple of evenings so see if you like it, give one of us a ring. If you like, we can even arrange for a couple of us to meet you in a pub for an informal chat. We are a relaxed bunch and welcome all sorts - just as long as you enjoy social occasions and would like to be able to put something back in to the community a couple of times a year. We look forward to hearing from you.

The Town Council at present owns and maintains some 41 seats and benches situated in the town, a significant number of which have been donated in memory of people for whom Bewdley was a special place. 15. The Town Council owns and maintains 6 lifebelts on Severn Side North, Severn Side South and Wribbenhall which are checked on a regular basis. 16. The Town Council owns and maintains 10 street poles in Load Street which are used for Christmas Lights, bunting for the Carnival and Festival and for hanging baskets. 17. The Town Council manages the events notice board on Beale’s Corner and all organisations in the town are able to advertise on this. 18. The Town Council continues to keep a watchful eye on the town and throughout the year the Town Clerk takes up a wide range of matters with Wyre Forest District Council, Worcestershire County Council and other appropriate councils. 20. Bewdley Town Council
ANNUAL REPORT
21. The condition of Bewdley’s trees is monitored by the two Tree Wardens appointed by the Town Council who regularly comment on planning applications for work to be done on trees in the Town. 22. The Lengthsman is now fully operational and carries out a wide range of minor highways work in the town and his work has had a considerable effect on areas of the town that were previously not maintained. Other Activities - Flowers, Fireworks, Christmas Lights 23. The Town Council owns 10 concrete flower tubs located outside the Guildhall and around the top of St. Anne’s Church. They are planted up for the summer and winter seasons. Once funds are available it is intended to replace these with different tubs in different locations. 24. The Town Council provides and pays for the hanging baskets in Load Street and parts of Severn Side South. 25. The Town Council currently provides the lights for the Christmas Lights Festival and the final section of lights was replaced last year resulting in a much higher level of reliability. The Christmas Lights Committee is now entirely separate from the Town Council and applies for funds in the same way as other organisations in the Town. 26. The Town Council arranges and pays for the fireworks display which forms part of the Carnival entertainment in June. Illumination of Bewdley Bridge 27. The protracted procedures required to get the arches of the bridge illuminated are progressing, if somewhat slowly. A survey was required to assess the implications for bats at a cost of £907 and, now that this been resolved, detailed work is being carried out which will culminate with a Planning Application for this Grade 1 Listed Building. A “No- Fishing Area in the Town 28. The question of a “No fishing” area in the Town to protect swans from lead poisoning alleged to be caused by fishing was discussed at Council and Public Meetings but, whilst there remains no clear evidence that the lead poisoning is a result of fishing, no ban on fishing will be imposed by the relevant authority. Wribbenhall Millennium Green Trust 29. The Town Council is currently going through the legal procedures to enable it to take over as Sole Trustee for the Trust which was initially setup by Opportunity Bewdley (now Bewdley Development Trust). Shops and Cafes on Severn Side North & South 30. The Town Council has been consulted by WFDC over the licensing arrangements for shops and cafes to enable them to have their tables and chairs on the riverside to improve facilities for visitors and it is expected that these new arrangements will be operational from Spring 2009.

Members of the Bewdley Town Football Club attended a Planning Committee to complain about planning restrictions imposed by WFDC on the floodlights for the club, and although the location of the club is in Rock Parish, Councillors were part of the successful campaign to have the restrictions relaxed. 33. All Committee Meetings of the Town Council are open to the public. Communication with residents 34. Full agenda and minutes of all Town Council Committees are available for viewing on the town’s website (www.bewdley.org,uk) and “The Town Council News” is published every month in The Bridge magazine. This includes significant items from these meetings and additional information relevant to people in Bewdley. Water mains replacement in Bewdley 40. Councillors have again been actively involved in working with the contractors Balfour Beatty to minimise disruption in the town and to ensure that large public events in the town during the road works are not disrupted. Through the efforts of Town Councillors, traders and district councillors, the postponement of disruptive water mains renewal in Load Street and High Street was deferred from an April 2009 start to a projected January 2010 start. Finances 41. The bulk of the Town Council’s income comes from the Precept. This is the sum of money which the Town Council determines should be paid by the Council Tax payers of Bewdley, and is collected on its behalf by Wyre Forest District Council. 42. One of the dilemmas which the Town Council faces every year is a desire to provide more for the people of Bewdley against a need to keep Town Council Tax payments at a reasonable level. In the financial year 2009/10 the Town Council accepted that an increase of 2.92% was required on the precept. This includes additional costs for business rates previously not charged for which an additional £760.00 has been budgeted. Without this additional cost the increase in the precept would have been 1.9%. Year Precept Cost for Band D Taxpayer £ £ 2003/4 50,280 13.90 2004/5 50,900 13.90 2005/6 53,200 14.44 2006/7 58,025 15.71 2007/8 73,760 19.91 2008/9 77,775 21.05 2009/10 80,048 21.52 43. June in the Forest
Community News
This month sees the summer solstice (21st June) and Midsummer’s Day (24th June), the latter being one of the Quarter Days when tithes and rents were due. We can hope that the weather will live up to the occasion and be kind to ourselves and the forest wildlife. At this time there is an explosion of life, with nests and burrows full of young. Old trees with their rotten wood attract many kinds of wildlife, and all three of the Wyre Forest’s woodpeckers (Green, Great Spotted and Lesser Spotted) are attracted to them to feed on invertebrates and make their nest holes.
The young can be extremely noisy and a passerby will set off a cacophony of squawking from the nestlings anticipating a meal from a parent. Green Woodpeckers like a mixture of mature trees and more open ground where they can use their long tongues to slurp up ants.
The hills of wood ants are sometimes raided and the bird’s characteristic comma-shaped droppings are left behind. Greater Spotted Woodpeckers are a familiar sight on peanut feeders in gardens around the forest but the Lesser Spotted are much rarer. Perhaps your best chance of seeing or hearing one would be to visit one of the old orchards in and around the forest, where they spend much of their time high in the smaller branches of trees. Do let us know of any spottings! (Ha ha).
Events
The Forestry Commission’s usual monthly Walk in the Woods is taking a break for the next 2 months but there will still be an opportunity twice a week to join a Health Walk using the forest trails and designed to gradually build up fitness. Meet at the Visitor Centre at 10.30am on Tuesdays or Sundays to register before the 11am walk. These walks are led by volunteers and there is no charge. For a different kind of experience try the family Dusk Walk on 4th July. Come to the Visitor Centre at 9pm with a torch and wearing warm clothes and spend 2 hours as darkness falls looking for bats, glow-worms and other night creatures. The walk costs £6 per person and must be booked on the number below. The Discovery Centre will be busy with school groups and Forest Friends meet at Visitor Centre at10am each Thursday in term time for an hour of forest activities for pre-school children and their carers. £2 per child.
The Bushcraft Weekend on 27th and 28th June will see 6 families taking to the woods to try their shelter-building and other survival skills. For all our events look for our green and purple leaflet in libraries, visitor centres and tourist information centres, or call 01299 266929. Linda Iles Forestry Commission

Defenders of Bewdley’s Heritage
Bewdley Civic Society
Last month we introduced readers of The Bridge to the beliefs and objectives of this old established Society. This month we thought it would be useful if we gave a few examples of recent achievements. One which we are very proud of is our idea to construct the Green Theatre in Jubilee Gardens which served to replace the old bandstand on Severnside South which made way for the flood defences. Now we have a most attractive backdrop for the Concerts in August. The Society has long wished to see the old sandstone wall along the Kidderminster Road in Wribbenhall restored to its former glory. The Society got together with two private individuals and agreed to go 50/50 towards the cost of the repairs costing £3,000. Work was mid way through when we learnt that the Culvert going under the road (and the wall) is to be repaired next year so we had to stop. However we are committed to spend a further £1,000 once we can get the work going again and finish the job. The brass waymarkers in the town centre pavements are part of a new Heritage Trail which was funded last year by Bewdley Development Trust. The Society, with pupils of St Anne’s Middle School, produced a written guide of three separate routes through the historic parts of the town and this is available free of charge at the Tourist information Centre. Next month we will draw attention to matters which are concerning us at the present time. If you would like to join the Society or pass on your own concerns please contact Ken Hobson (Tel. 402700) or Richard Perrin (Tel. 402705)

From The Pulpit
In my wardrobe hangs a sweater that I seldom wear. It's now too small; the sleeves too short, the shoulders too tight. A button is missing and the elbows are threadbare. I have no use for it, I'll never wear it again. Logic says I should throw it away. That's what "logic" says, but love doesn't let me. Something unique about that sweater makes me keep it. It has no label, no washing instructions, no designer name. It can't have because this sweater wasn't made by a machine, packed by a machine or the product of a nameless employee earning a living. It's the creation of a devoted mum expressing her love. The sweater is unique, one of a kind; it can’t be replaced. Each thread was selected with care, each row knitted with affection. And although the sweater may have lost its use, it's valuable; not because of its function, but because of its maker. That's what must have been in the psalmist's mind when he wrote in Psalm 139:13 "You knit me together in my mother's womb". Just think of those words. You where knitted together, you are no accident, you were not mass-produced, you aren't an assembly-line product. Y ou were deliberately planned and positioned on this earth, just where you are, by the master craftsman -- God himself. In Ephesians 2:10 "For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do God's work, which God prepared in advance for us to do". In a society that has little room for second fiddles, that's good news. In a culture where the door of opportunity only opens once and then slams shut, that is a revelation. In a system that ranks the value of a human by the figures of his salary or the shape of her legs, Jesus' plan is a reason for joy! A new kingdom is but a prayer away. A kingdom where people have value not because of what they do, but because of who they are. Praise God!! Pete Williams (inspiration from Max Lucado - "Your Place At God's Table")

Saturday May 2nd 2009 was the last regular Saturday market held in Bewdley.
Bewdley has a very long history as a market town and hundreds of years ago two markets were held weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays although by 1793 markets were no longer held on Wednesdays. The town was also entitled to hold four fairs yearly on the feast of St. Agatha (5th February), the feast of St George (23rd April), the feast of St. Anne (26th July) and on St. Andrew's day (30th November). By 1793 the fair on St Agatha's day was no longer held but the St George's day fair was held again in 2009. Income from the markets and fairs was granted to the bailiff and burgesses of Bewdley by both King Henry VIII and King James I. John Adey

Firstly I would like to introduce myself, I’m PC Ashley Bloor and I am a Response Officer here at Bewdley.
I have been stationed at Bewdley since January this year, after having previously worked at Kidderminster for two years. Since working at Bewdley I have developed a fondness for the town. Bewdley is a quaint and beautiful town that has a real community feel about it. The role of a Response Officer can be a varied and challenging one. Response Officers are the first to respond to reports of incidents, so there is a lot of responsibility involved with the role. As the first officers on scene they have to dynamically assess the situation and take appropriate action. For example at a potentially serious incident they would have to restore order if necessary and then preserve and gather evidence and make vitally important decisions. It is those crucial minutes after an offence has taken place that are vital and can impact on the entirety of the case.
When I was training for my role as a Police Officer the Trainer began speaking about ‘policing by consent’. I remember thinking what does mean? ‘Policing by consent’ means that the Police

need the co-operation and assistance of you the members of the community in order to carry out our duties and to be effective.
A typical example is where the police attend the scene of an anonymously reported assault, such as happens in a town centre on a typical Friday or Saturday night. There are a number of people in the area, but no-one is willing to tell the police what has taken place or make a statement and there is no CCTV of the incident. How would a Police Officer be able to progress that investigation? The answer is that they wouldn’t as there would not be sufficient evidence to proceed against anyone. The offender would go unpunished and a person would be hurt with no recourse to justice, because the public did not consent to help us. This is why in Britain we police with consent. We rely on you to report incidents, to be willing to make statements and to assist us in the course of our duties. We all have a role to play and together we can make a difference.
PC Ash Bloor.
In 1938/9, I was working in the Customs & Excise in London. Stanley Baldwin had just been created Earl Baldwin of Bewdley and there were photos of the little town in all the papers. I recall thinking at the time how nice it would be to become the Excise Officer for Bewdley. Lo and behold in 1958 I did become the Excise Officer for Bewdley plus Bridgnorth and half of Kidderminster! The Excise Officer somewhat earlier in this century was still expected to provide his own horse, and in fact the station was then known as the Bewdley Ride. Excise duties are, of course, duties on goods or services manufactured or provided in this country, and have in the past included duty on home produced sugar (I even had my own office in the sugar factory) , club duty (on all sales in licensed clubs), mechanical lighter duty, betting duty etc. Even back in 1958 there was still a publican brewer plying his trade in Kidderminster - Harry Richards at the Old Parkers Arms. I also had to visit every pub in the area once a year to check on various points. My career is one that has today virtually disappeared, but Bewdley has fully lived up to the expectations of myself and my wife. George Billinge

All Saints' and Wribbenhall Together
It gives me great pleasure in asking you to stand, raise your glass and join with me "Happy birthday to you ..." Yes our project, supporting our local and wider communities, based in All Saints' Church Wribbenhall has just celebrated its second birthday. Two full years of providing "specialists" with information and advice to help any and all who are needing it; two full years of being there come rain, wind or sunshine; two full years of welcoming, of opening our Church, of opening our hearts; two full years of making drinks, providing yummy chocolate biscuits, sorting difficulties and yes two full years of seeing people coming into Church weighed down with cares & worries and then leaving with a smile on their face and God's love in their hearts. There have been tough times along the way; times when disappointment has knocked and discouragement has hovered but through it all that one person helped, that one kind comment, that read of our visitors' book has put every thing back into perspective and gives us the reason for opening the following Monday. So do come along, wish the Monday Girls a "Happy Second Birthday" and help us to celebrate the life of "All Saints' And Wribbenhall Together" in the best possible way -- that of knowing you have been helped

H o w I c a m e t o B e wd l e y 2 We moved to Bewdley for the community, and because of the secondary school. My parents weren't happy about keeping me at a rather unpleasant, lowly regarded school which I wasn’t happy at, so they moved me and my sisters to "The Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre". I can now tell you that I am very happy at Bewdley School, and as a school we have achieved so much, for example achieving some of the best GCSE and A-level results in the county, which has brought about an outstanding reputation which everyone at Bewdley is enjoying. On behalf of the youth of Bewdley, we want to say a big thank you for trusting us, inspiring us and helping us over all, as well as thanking our teachers at Bewdley for raising such an outstanding school with excellent care. Chris Salter
We came to Bewdley 30 years ago when my husband Ken was promoted to the position of Postmaster of the three towns – Kidderminster, Stourport and Bewdley. When our eldest granddaughter, who had just started school, was asked by her teacher where her grandparents had gone to live, she replied . “Oh, it begins with a ‘B’, it’s either Bethlehem or Birmingham.” Diana Edmondson
....
It’s all the Warnetts fault. We came to visit their new house in Pleasant Harbour in early 2005 and remembered when we used to come to Bewdley as visitors. We lived in Stourbridge at the time it was that long ago (1970’s) before the SVR extended to Kidderminster. The Safari Park used to have monkeys then. I am quite glad they don’t now. We then moved to London via Buckinghamshire but in late 2006 were thinking that we would like to move to a town that was compact, had some history but was near the countryside and had a Waitrose nearby. Bewdley passes the test except on the Waitrose front…………. We viewed several houses but loved the 300 years old property in Lower Park which we subsequently bought and renovated and we are looking forward to enjoying the town even more than we do now. People are friendly, the beer is good and there is some good food to be had as well as two great fish & chip shops. We need a proper Italian though. The countryside is wonderful as are the Festival, Carnival, Regatta and Discover Bewdley event which helps to make Bewdley a great place to live. We have no regrets and still talk to the Warnetts! Chris Griffin We lived out in the countryside and wanted a few luxuries like mains gas, electricity and sewage. Bewdley fitted the bill. Caroline Evans

Highlights of Discover Bewdley 09
The deli sold out of Bewdley Blue cheese. The Brewery sold all their beer. The Arts & Crafts Market were busier than last year.
Wonderful entries to the I Discovered Bewdley competition at Melting Pot.
The Girl Guides sold many teas and cakes (the lemon drizzle was very good!).
The Fire Brigade drew a large crowd as they cut “someone” out of a car.
SARA spent much time training in the river and only had one first aid case.
The Mug House beer festival ran out of beer.
The banners on Severnside South. The Museum on the Move attracted over 700 visitors.
The eco/green area created a lot of interest. The Packhorse was packed for the Blues evening.
The presentation of the Town Charter to the Mayor was historic.
Large crowds came for the Wythe Retinue and Ferret racing in Jubilee Gardens.
The museum re-opening was the star of the
show, packed out and provides a great asset to the town. The finale was the excellent Carrie Hayden concert at the Baptist Church which sold out. Great support from Naked Remedy too. Overall it went really well and what’s more the sun shone on Sunday. It was a little wet first thing on Monday but then it cleared up and a good time was had by all!

Seeds of security at garden centre project launch
Free packets of seeds giving advice on garden and shed security were given out last month at Longbank Charity Garden Centre. The packets promoted Top Tips For A Safer Garden and are part of the force’s Safe and Secure campaign.
Kidz First charity provides recreational, social and work experience opportunities for children and young people with a range of disabilities. The facilities include a youth café, art room, paddling pool and beach area, wilderness area and sensory gardens set around the garden centre.
Chief Executive Officer of Kidz First, Sharon Weston, said: “This was set up because children and young people with disabilities are often socially excluded. After some of the kids said they wanted to grow their own produce we acquired some derelict land here at Longbank and we now have young people coming daily for therapy and incidental learning. However this project belongs to the community and the facilities can be used by people of all abilities. We want to involve as many people and groups as possible because the saddest thing would be for it to be empty for most of the time. We want to infect it with the laughter of children.”
BOOST for Bewdley’s Litter-pickers!
The onward march against litter in Bewdley (see last month’s articles from Nigel Smith and Bus Stop) has spread. Bewdley Primary School after school club BOOST (Bewdley Out of School Time) recently took part in a clean up of the Wribbenhall play area in Shaw Hedge Rd. The litter pick was organised by BOOST supervisor Carol and Neighbourhood Wardens from the Community Housing Group. Kevin Roy
