The BRIDGE June 2010
Bewdley Museum Education Service Local schools have been involved in a range of exciting projects at Bewdley Museum. Inspiration came from artefacts and objects from the Museum’s collection to create ‘A Child Inspired’ – this year’s exhibition in the Severn Gallery throughout April and May. 130 pupils from St Anne’s and Bewdley Primary helped to plant more than 60 fruit trees and bushes in the new Jubilee Gardens community Orchard. They also made clay information plaques which will be placed next to ‘their’ trees. Children enjoyed decorating eggs, mask making, creating clay and collage designs, alongside other crafts over the Easter holidays. Plenty of fun activities are planned for the summer holidays. Visit www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk/museum or ask for the ‘Summer Programme’ in the Tourist Information Centre. Many schools have snapped up places for the Blitz and Evacuation programme linked with the Severn Valley Railway. New programmes including Canals, Orchards and Florence Nightingale will be launched over the summer. Again, check our bulletins or website for more details.
Community Builders
Hello, we are Emma Astley and Jared Reid, and we are the new Community Builders at the Bewdley Development Trust. This is a little introduction into what we have been doing and how we have found it so far. On the first day we were creating and updating databases. We then got the afternoon to explore the beautiful scenery of Bewdley, and not only that, but also some local food from Piccolo's. We have really enjoyed the past three weeks working at the Bewdley Development Trust. We work with a Jared, Emma with Thomas Bell fantastic team who welcomed us straight away and we the Project Manager have learnt so much in such a short time. Our main goal is to promote tourism in Bewdley by building a strong reputation in the neighbouring communities. We are coming up with many different ways to do this every day. We are especially looking forward to Discover Bewdley to see how well it takes off. So far, we have created a database about the social and community groups and businesses in Bewdley. At the moment, we are working on creating websites that are reasonably priced and simple to use, not to mention reliable. Jared and Emma

Bring me Sunshine! I think that June with its long light evenings is possibly my favourite month. We can be fairly sure that, even with our weather doing rather odd things these days, we won’t have to don hat and gloves when we venture out. Given a bit of luck, there’ll be days when al fresco dining isn’t completely out of the question. And for us gardeners, June is, in the words of the song, bustin’ out all over. Next door, Florence has also noticed the changing season, and is feeling – well, broody. Alas! She has at last met her match. Her erstwhile friend, Doris, has also decided to perpetuate her species and has taken to her duties as a mother with considerable bellicosity. Florence, denied her own maternity ward, has become most upset. This has resulted in her producing a sort of mini-egg, which as you can see from the photo, is frankly not up to scratch. I think Florence needs counselling. Unless Nigel sends Doris for anger management. Fortunately, Bewdley is a happier place this month with several of our big events happening. I’m looking forward to the Pub and Club regatta; I have friends taking part this year so I’ll go and yell at them from the bank. The carnival is always a great day for the town; I’ll try and persuade some of my city-dwelling friends to come and join in. And finally for my diary, the Open Studios will give me the chance to go round the town and marvel at the talent we have in Bewdley. Let’s hope for good weather to tempt in the tourists and make the month a happier one for traders and townsfolk alike after our long months of cold and disruption. Margaret Ashmore

Caught by the ash cloud
When we went to Morocco for the Easter holidays, we were looking forward to riding camels in the Sahara desert. Little did we know that, to get home, we would end up using virtually every other form of transport you can think of – except an aeroplane! We were caught by the volcano which meant our flight home was cancelled and we had to get home overland. The first leg was by sleeper from Marrakech to Tangiers in the north of Morocco. At Tangiers, we got a ferry across to Spain where a kind businessman gave us a lift in his taxi to Malaga, where the nearest international train station was. From Malaga we hoped to get a sleeper direct to Paris but, due to a French train strike, no trains were going across the border so we boarded a sleeper train to Barcelona where, we joined a queue in the bus station to see if we could get a bus to France but had to wait until the next day. So we persuaded mum and dad to take us to the zoo which was fantastic – the big cats were the best. Barcelona is fab. Next day, we got the bus to Montpelier in France. Our Auntie Margaret in Aberdeen had booked us on a train from there to Paris – the strike was over - so we got on and sped very fast to Paris – TGV’s go at 180 miles an hour! It was late when we got there so we went straight to a hotel. Next day, we enjoyed a day in Paris, visiting the Eiffel Tower. That evening, we caught a train to Cherbourg then got on the ferry. When we got off, a coach to London was about to leave so we hopped on then changed to another coach to Luton where we picked up our car. We arrived home about 4 o’clock on Tuesday after five days travelling. Ailsa Roper (13) & James Roper (11) (Scene: Hotel room in Benidorm.Thursday 15th April, evening. Enter Kay and daughter.) Husband “Want to hear the good news?” (Dramatic pause. He tells her about volcano in Iceland.) Kay (shrugging) “And?” Thus began our role in the ‘Brits stranded abroad’ drama. We were among the lucky ones; we’d booked a package holiday. Our stranded days fell into the following routine; am – Check notice board for news of departure. Enjoy breakfast including glass of cava. Stroll along sea front and wander around Benidorm’s beautiful Old Town. Return and check notice board before lunch. pm – Siesta. Take daughter swimming and try to read Spanish magazines. Have meeting with holiday rep who has no news. Occasionally meet rep in other hotels, all of which seem grander than ours. Evening meal. Stroll along beach front, back through Old Town and home, dodging nightclub hawkers. What an ordeal. The exciting bit was the flight home. Following a slight delay before boarding, the crew instructed us to sit and buckle up immediately, as coach loads continued to unload and scramble on, unable to believe their luck. Collective adrenaline made everything feel more intense; all we needed was Chuck Norris to make a death defying leap onto the plane as it actually took off and we would have had the final scene of a brilliant film. . When we arrived back at the airport car park, my car battery was flat. Kay Sanderson

You move to a new area and you have a new job to settle in to, a new home to find and perhaps schools to sort out for the kids. Once the initial hard work is over, you then start to think about how to meet people and build a social circle. Or perhaps you have been in the area for a long time but would like to expand your horizons? If you’re interested in coming along to a couple of evenings so see if you like it, give one of us a ring. If you like, we can even arrange for a couple of us to meet you in a pub for an informal chat. We are a relaxed bunch and welcome all sorts - just as long as you enjoy social occasions and would like to be able to put something back in to the community a couple of times a year. We look forward to hearing from you.

More News from Gabi the Puppy-walker
Community News
Due to a skin condition and the need for antibiotics, my new puppy Frazzle's first 'walkies' were delayed by five weeks. Fortunately, she is a natural and has taken to her lead, and the demands of walking, well. She loves the attention she receives in the town and is probably the only one missing the roadworks: the noise and machinery, extra pats and pleasure of walking along a traffic free High Street! A very calm and placid 5 month old, her only vice is barking. Sorry shop owners and customers - we are working on it! Initially, overly confident with other dogs, she has been 'put in her place' by the great dogs and owners who frequent the fields behind the High Street. Thanks! She is far more respectful of them now and shadows them from a distance as they enjoy their exercise. I think she has great potential as a guide dog. News of Arty is good. He should complete his basic training at the end of May and will then move on to his advanced course at a different centre. I have been invited to Leamington to see him working later this month. His trainer describes him as a tortoise rather than a hare, but we all know the outcome of that story. It was good to chat to someone about puppy walking/boarding last month. Do get in touch if interested. (01299 405023) Gabi Wootton.
Glamorous Life of an Opera Singer Part 3
This month’s story is about that friend who got stuck in the railway siding. He let me in on an even more embarrassing experience. Many years ago, he had done 'extra-chorus', i.e. he had been employed to replace an absent member of the full time chorus of a well-known opera company. He'd done this a lot, and had a well-worn routine. He would be called to rehearse the music and ensure it was memorized at a rehearsal room somewhere in London. On the day of the performance, he'd get himself to the theatre and meet with an assistant director, who would fill him in on what moves he must make on stage in the performance. On this occasion, the action involved a scene in which the male choristers carried off lots of women choristers, dragging them off-stage to do unspeakable things. The assistant director told him to watch out for this happening, and when he saw the rest of the male chorus make their move, he must follow suit, grab a woman, and carry her struggling body off to the wings. The performance duly began, and my friend went on stage with the others, and looked around at the women, choosing a smallish but pleasingly beautiful specimen to carry off later. When the moment came, he sprang into action and grabbed his girl. She struggled wildly, as one would expect, but he was quite able to carry her off despite her flailing limbs. When he finally planted her back on the floor, she turned on him, and in a very heavy Italian accent screamed, “Idiot-a! You have-a made-a me miss-a my aria!” Bad choice! He’d picked the leading lady. Alan Fairs

A Night at the Opera
Wow! Wow! And Triple Wow! What more can I say? If you missed the treat that was Bewdley Choral Society’s “A Night at the Opera” on Saturday 24th April at St. Anne’s Church, then make sure you never miss another (the next concert is 20th November). How lucky were we to have the opportunity to hear the wonderfully talented soprano Lianne Birkett and tenor Benjamin Gilham, straight from the Birmingham Conservatoire. Their performance of the Love Scene from Act 1, La Boheme (Puccini) left me with tears streaming down my face. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one to be so emotionally moved by the whole concert. I feel so lucky to live in such a beautiful small town as Bewdley and to be able to enjoy such a fabulous evening’s entertainment. Hang on though.........I’m not actually that keen on opera!!!! Barbara Revill.

A Memorial to Stanley Baldwin?
In last month’s issue, the editor asked why Bewdley has no memorial to Stanley Baldwin. I initiated a public debate on this when I was Mayor of the town exactly 20 years ago. Baldwin was a son of the town, Member of Parliament for Bewdley, and Prime Minister no less than three times between the wars. I found that the sentiment in the town was very much against the idea. I think this was for two main reasons: firstly we prefer to honour figures of culture, poets, artists and composers rather than politicians. Secondly, Baldwin’s legacy is seen as somewhat toxic, being coloured by the failure to rearm adequately before 1939 and the General Strike of 1926. At least no-one mentioned the Abdication Crisis of 1936, so some scars have healed! This reputation may be unfair, and he may be due a reassessment by history, but I suspect that the sentiment in the town would not be enthusiastic today. The only clear supporter of the idea was the then MP, Anthony Coombes … perhaps an early example of the Conservative-Lib Demmery that is so fashionable as I write three days after the election! I also think that we may not need a memorial so much now. The Bewdley Museum has an excellent enlarged collection of Baldwin memorabilia on display, with interpretation. The Museum now has free entry and many visitors each year. It is very well run, and there is an excellent “Friends” organisation. So I suggest that we leave it to the Museum to keep the Baldwin memory and its significance alive. Robert Barbour

Make a difference as a Volunteer Befriender in your community
Onside Lifelinks mentoring and befriending service for people over the age of 50 has proved extremely popular and, as a result, we need volunteers across Worcestershire. We are looking for Befrienders to provide a supportive and reliable relationship to people who would otherwise be socially isolated. The support may involve visiting the person at home or helping them to get out and about in the local community, and doesn’t involve any domestic or personal care. We are also seeking Volunteers to act as telephone befrienders to support our peer groups where older adults meet in local community settings. Volunteers are people of all ages and backgrounds; they need to be good listeners, open and non-judgmental. Katherine, one of the Lifelinks volunteers, said ‘If you are thinking about volunteering I would say “DO IT!”. I have had so much pleasure already, it is a wonderful feeling when you know you’ve helped and made even a small difference to someone else’s life.’ If you can picture yourself in the role of mentor or befriender please call Sarah or Claire on 01905 746556 or email volunteering@onside-advocacy.org.uk to find out more. This type of volunteering can be very flexible to fit with your life and circumstances. Free training is provided and all expenses paid.

Our new Charity shop in Stourport is always in need of support from the local community and we are particularly interested in anyone who can volunteer. Hours are arranged to suit and our young and friendly team happy to accommodate volunteers in areas where they would like to work e.g. sorting, pricing or preparing stock. Gentlemen please don’t think that this is just for the ladies as we also need volunteers to help sort the electrical items for PAT testing and sale, particularly if you are able to help sort computers and accessories. Our charity shop supports the work of Mentor Link, the local children’s charity founded in Bewdley in 2002 . Over the years this charity has successfully supported hundreds of local children and provided invaluable links between the community and its young people. Our thanks to those dedicated volunteers who always put the needs of children first. If you are interested please contact Nadia on 01299 823537.

An Easter treat
A special trip had been planned for 2nd Bewdley Brownies – a trip to Cadbury’s World. We set off with Mark our own personal coach driver on a lovely sunny day.
Arriving at Cadbury’s the girls wanted their first sample of chocolate so we had to oblige with the melted chocolate. Not a good idea before climbing frames and lunch. We then did our tour, learnt about the history of Cadbury, had MORE chocolate and a fun ride through Cadabra. It was then to the shop and dash round to see the show before going back home with chocolate tops and faces. At the end of the day a woman approached the Guiders to say she had followed the Brownies around Cadbury’s and would like to say something about their behaviour. My heart sank – she proceeded to tell me that they were a well behaved, polite group of girls but still were obviously having fun and what a pleasure it had been to meet them!! Bewdley Town Council ANNUAL REPORT 2009/2010
Bewdley Town Council
ANNUAL REPORT
BEWDLEY TOWN COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORT 2009/20010 The Town Council 1. The Town Council year started on 15 May with the Annual Meeting of the Town Council, also known as Mayor-Making. At that meeting Town Councillors elected a Mayor, a Deputy, the Town Council’s Committees and Advisory Groups, and representatives to outside bodies. 2. The Town Council comprises 13 Town Councillors, made up of 4 representatives from Bewdley West and Bewdley East respectively and 5 from Wribbenhall. The names and contact details of all the Town Councillors can be obtained from the Town Clerk’s Office or from the website www.bewdley.org.uk 3. Town Councillors were elected in May 2006 for a term of 4 years until May 2010. This report covers the final year of that period. 4. Town Council Elections were scheduled to take place on 6th May 2010 but were postponed for a period of three weeks to 27th May on account of the General Election taking place on 6th May. The District Council Elections were unaffected and still went ahead on 6th May. These rules stem from provisions in the Local Government Act over which neither the Town nor the District Councils have any control. 5. The Town Council and Planning Committee meet once a month. They generally do so on the first Monday of each month unless that happens to be a Bank Holiday in which case they take place a day later There will have been twelve meetings during the course of this Council year with the final meeting scheduled to take place on 4th May. The attendance record for the the Town Councillors is set out below 6. Town Council Planning Committee Cllr. Dr J. Adams 10/12 10/12 Cllr. G Bulmer 10/12 10/12 Cllr. S.J.M. Clee 2/12 N/A Cllr. 7 The Town Council holds its formal meetings in the Guildhall which is owned by the District Council but made available as and when required. 8. The Town Council is actively involved with a number of organisations in Bewdley on which it has representatives namely: Chamber of Trade, Christmas Lights, Civic Society, Community Health & Facilities Group, Community Transport Helpline, Bewdley Development Trust, Town Centre Forum & Environment Group, Bewdley Medical Practice Patients’ Advisory Group, Bewdley Museum Management Committee and Bewdley Old Grammar School Trust. In addition it has representatives on the following organisations: County Association of Local Councils Executive (CALC), Citizens Advice Bureau, Emergency Planning Group, Fair Trade Committee, Parish Games, Worcestershire Assembly and Wyre Forest Parish Forum. Staffing Matters 9 Mr Paul Mann who had been the Town Council’s Clerk for four years retired from office last May and he was succeeded by Mr Stephen Inman. The Mayor’s PA is Mrs Karen Raine and the Treasurer is Mr David Moore. All three are part time employees. The payroll function for the Council is carried out by the District Council. None of the positions are pensionable. Civic Matters 10 Civic Ceremonies involving the Town Council comprise: St. George’s Day Parade in April, Annual Meeting of the Town Council (Mayor-Making) in May, Mayor’s Sunday in June, Bewdley Festival Service in October and Remembrance Services in November with a morning service at St. Anne’s and an afternoon service at All Saints. 11 The Mayor undertook a full and extensive programme of engagements during the year. 12 Amongst its most treasured and valuable possessions are the Town Council’s two maces. They are now 300 years old and are held on important civic occasions by two of the Council’s Macebearers standing immediately next to the Mayor 13 In September the Mayor’s Parlour and Guildhall were once again opened to the public for Heritage Open Day with several Town Councillors taking part. Civic Awards 14 A very enjoyable Awards Evening was held on 5th March 2010 at which awards were presented to Margaret Ashmore for her work as a volunteer for Mentor Link and as editor of The Bridge magazine and as a church warden at St Annes, to Jo Bloom for her work on flood alleviation projects and as “Culverteer” in removing blockages to the water flow around Wribbenhall and to Peter Thomson for his lifetime’s support of the Scout movement in Bewdley

Town Maintenance 15 The Town Council pays for the servicing of the Town Clock on St. Anne’s Church Tower. 16 The Town Council owns nine bus shelters. All these bus shelters have been provided from funds of Worcestershire County Council but are maintained by the Town Council and as such are cleaned on a two monthly basis at an annual cost of approximately £800.00. The cleaning contract is about to be relet by tender, the present contractor having given notice to terminate the arrangement which has lasted for some four years. 17 The Town Council at present owns and maintains some 41 seats and benches situated in the town, a significant number of which have been donated in memory of people for whom Bewdley was a special place. 18 The Town Council owns and maintains 7 lifebelts on Severnside North, Severnside South and in Wribbenhall which are checked on a regular basis. 19 The Town Council owns and maintains 10 street poles in Load Street which are used for Christmas Lights, bunting for the Carnival and Festival and for hanging baskets. It is unfortunate that from time to time these are damaged by vehicles which then necessitates repair. 20 The Town Council manages the events notice board on Beale’s Corner and all organisations in the town are able to advertise on this, subject to liaising with the Town Clerk as to a suitable slot in the diary being available. Due to high demand, it is becoming necessary to limit advertising to a period of one week per event. Any adverts must also comply with the requirement that they are not too wordy as to cause a distraction for motorists. 21 The Town Council has continued to pay the running costs and maintenance of the Wyre Hill Play Area which costs about £4,500.00 per annum. 22 The Town Council through its Councillors continues to keep a watchful eye on the town and throughout the year the Town Clerk takes up a wide range of matters with Wyre Forest District Council, Worcestershire County Council and other appropriate councils and statutory agencies. 23 The condition of Bewdley’s rural footpaths is monitored by the two Footpath Officers. 24 The condition of Bewdley’s trees is monitored by the two Tree Wardens appointed by the Town Council who regularly comment on planning applications for work to be done on trees in the Town. 25 The Lengthsman is now fully operational and carries out a wide range of minor highways work in the town and his work has had a considerable effect on areas of the town that were previously not maintained. The Council has agreed in principle to having the Lengthsman extend his duties so as to provide gritting for the main town centre pavements. This followed the treacherous conditions of last winter when it was quite evident that clearance of snow and ice and gritting of
Bewdley Town Council

pavements was no longer within the remit of the County or District Councils due to lack of resources. Other Activities - Flowers, Fireworks, Christmas Lights 26 The Town Council owns 10 concrete flower tubs located outside the Guildhall and around the top of St. Anne’s Church. They are planted up for the summer and winter seasons. The Council has agreed to an increase in the budget for flowers and planters etc given the wish to enhance the appearance of the town centre to make it more attractive for both visitors and residents alike. 27 The Town Council provides and pays for the hanging baskets in Load Street and parts of Severnside South. 28 The Town Council currently provides the Christmas Lights which are switched on for a period of about six weeks. It pays the cost of installation, maintenance and dismantling of £3,900 together with the cost of the electricity. Some of the displays on the lamp posts have begun to fail and the Town Council has budgeted to replace these in time for Christmas 2010 using as well the sum of £1,250 paid from the County Council’s Economy Group. 29 The Town Council arranges and pays for the fireworks display which forms part of the Carnival entertainment in June. Wribbenhall Millennium Green Trust 30 Now effectively responsible for the Millennium Green situated off Shaw Hedge Road in Wribbenhall, the Town Council has set up a Working Group which has met when necessary to review maintenance such as litter picking and grass cutting which is carried out free of charge by the Probation Service. Town Planning 31 Through its Planning Committee, the Town Council maintains an active role in planning matters. All planning applications in Bewdley are referred by the District Council to the Town Council Planning Committee for its views as statutory consultees. 32 On 27th May there was a Special Meeting of the Planning Committee to consider an application by Wyre Forest Community Housing Group for the erection of 46 affordable dwellings on the site of the former Wribbenhall Primary School in Shaw Hedge Road. The Committee recommended refusal on a number of grounds namely the adverse effect on highways, risk of flooding, sewage, general infrastructure and radiation risks from the overhead power lines. The Committee were disappointed that despite making representations in support of those reasons, planning consent was given by the District Council. 33 All Committee Meetings of the Town Council are open to the public. Communication with residents 34 Full agenda and minutes of all Town Council Committees are available for viewing on the town’s website (www.bewdley.org,uk) and “The Town Council News” is
Bewdley Town Council

published every month in The Bridge magazine. This includes significant items from these meetings and additional information relevant to people in Bewdley. Copies of minutes of all Council and Committee meetings are also available on the three town notice boards situated in the Load Street Car Park, on Load Street outside the Mayor’s Parlour and inside the covered entrance to The Guildhall. They can also be viewed at the Library. Bewdley Community Health & Facilities Group Project 35 The Town Council continues to be actively involved as a member of the Community Health & Facilities Group Project. This involves the redevelopment of the site off Load Street comprising the medical centre, library and St George’s Hall. Further plans are awaited though progress with the Scheme is slow due to funding restrictions. Youth Facilities 36 The Town Council continues to support the Youth Café through contributions and activities of individual councillors. It has now been open for a year and is regarded as one of the most successful in the local area with its design, management and workings being used as a basis for similar ventures in other towns. Quality Status 37 The Town Council retains its Quality Status that was granted for a four-year period from 2008. Policing in the Town Centre and Anti-Social behaviour 38 The Town Council continues to monitor anti-social behaviour in the town and is working with the Police and other relevant parties to try to eliminate such behaviour. Councillor representatives regularly attend local PACT meetings and meetings of the Wyre Forest Police Consultative Group. Shops and Cafes on Severnside North and Severnside South 39 The Town Council is working with the Licensing Section of Wyre Forest District Council to ensure the tables and chairs put out by the pubs and cafes along the riverside do not cause any obstruction to pedestrians bearing in mind both roads are used by vehicles as well. The Council is keen to encourage a “promenade” feel to the riverside to attract visitors and tourists to the town and for the local residents to benefit as well. However, the Council recognises a proper balance has to be struck between all interests and hence the continued monitoring and work that is ongoing to try to achieve that outcome. Allotments 40 During the course of the year a group of residents formed the Transition Bewdley Land Group whose aim is to increase the amount of local food that is grown and eaten in the town and to encourage sustainability in food production. Not having any allotments within Bewdley, the Group petitioned the Town Council to consider the provision of allotments which it is statutorily required to do. The Council
Bewdley Town Council
ANNUAL REPORT
supports these aims and is working with the Group and Bewdley Development Trust to identify a suitable site(s) Water & Gas Mains Replacement in Bewdley 41 These works have been a source of disruption to the town especially the traders and small businesses who have seen their turnover reduced as a result of passing trade diminishing substantially during the period that the contractors have been working. The Council was somewhat concerned in the autumn to learn from Severn Trent who were coordinating the works that their intended contractor, Balfour Beatty would no longer be carrying out the work. The contractors, Enterprise plc were appointed in their place. A meeting with their representatives and those from Severn Trent and National Grid took place at the Guildhall on 30th November at which traders and residents were able to attend to ask questions. The work commenced immediately in the New Year and is due to have finished in early May. Finances 42 The bulk of the Town Council’s income comes from the Precept. This is the sum of money which the Town Council determines should be paid by the Council Taxpayers of Bewdley, and is collected on its behalf by Wyre Forest District Council. 43 One of the dilemmas which the Town Council faces every year in common with all local authorities is a desire to provide more services and facilities for the people of Bewdley against a need to keep Town Council Tax payments at a reasonable level. This year when setting the budget, there was a consensus from the outset of not increasing the Precept for Town Council purposes. When the budget was finally fixed by the Council in February, it was able to confirm that there would be no increase in the amount levied on each household. Year Precept Cost for Band D Taxpayer £ £ 2003/4 50,280 13.90 2004/5 50,900 13.90 2005/6 53,200 14.44 2006/7 58,025 15.71 2007/8 73,760 19.91 2008/9 77,775 21.05 2009/10 80,048 21.52 2010/11 80,399 21.52 44 For the year 2010/11 the Town Council has agreed £6,000.00 worth of grants to local organisations which is an increase of £1,500 compared with 2009/10.

Green Gardening
Whilst much of our effort is to produce a beautiful garden it’s often good to have a wild area but we need to be sure what we’re trying to encourage into the garden and what is not wanted. What is desirable is a harmony between visitors and support for their work in keeping our garden maintained and the pests reduced. We have to establish a few things; a varied habitat, areas for breeding and shelter, feeding and foraging and a sustainable area. A warm compost heap may encourage hedgehogs to take up residence and then flourish on slugs and snails. Compost also attracts small rodents and other wriggling things, which in their turn also bring insect eating birds to the garden. It’s said there are no weeds, just flowers in the wrong place so don’t be frightened to have a few stinging nettles about to bring in moths and butterflies; brambles provide safe cover and their fruit goes on to feed furry friends who in turn feed on other invertebrates. Buddleia for bees and butterflies, honeysuckles and lavender also do much the same job; they attract flying insects for pollination. Birds, bats, beetles all need homes and we can provide for each quite simply, with nesting boxes, decaying wood and for mice and voles build a rockery. Each little animal contributes to the cycle of clearing up and regeneration. Of course there are less subtle methods with slug pellets, chemicals, traps and weed killers but nature’s way may be easier, friendlier and perhaps more attractive. Stuart Williams

Bewdley Youth Cafe
As soon as the Youth Cafe’ on Load Street opened I was very keen to find out what went on there. I arranged to meet with friends to go there after School, now we all meet up every morning before School.
In the morning we either have a cup of tea or hot chocolate and if you want to you can have toast.
I really enjoy going because I meet up with my friends, I play pool (sometimes there is a tournament) , and I can use the laptops. Derek and Sarah are really nice and friendly and keep the Youth Cafe welcoming and a safe place to go. We have been Bowling and we hope to take part in the Parish Games against Kidderminster playing Rounders.

King Henry’s cloth could scarce have been More glorious than this golden sheen So numerous my careless tread Could crush their life & leave some dead You little know how well you strive To keep my flagging soul alive And when your flowers are nearly over Replacement comes with bright red clover And tall aggressive plants that try To dominate all those more shy But within these plants so lowly Seeds of life remain and slowly Surely to return next year And year on year give endless cheer God bless my cowslips for such joy I would the world could so enjoy. Our Waiting List is Open Again No, Abbeyfield is not a nursing home; it is a small, friendly home where we take care of older folk, who are capable and wish to live independent lives. We are part of a very big, old established charity set up to help seniors, who are still active but cannot quite cope with living by themselves. And because we are a charity, living with us is not expensive.
Please phone us and come to look around and if you wish, you can put your name on our waiting list.

Commandant Nick Marlow.
Dear Readers,
With the hot summer nights and the World Cup upon us I expect Bewdley town centre to be very busy with people enjoying the occasional beverage from one of our many fine establishments. I think it is important that people feel that they can enjoy the occasion and go home safe and happy. Although incidents of disorder in the town centre have reduced by one hundred over the last year when compared to the previous year, we are still working hard to reduce this further by increased high visibility patrol of Officers and CSO’s on the beat.
This point leads me on to the role of Special Constables and the magnificent support they provide here at Bewdley. Special Constables are volunteers who do not receive any financial reward for all the long hours and late nights they work on Police duties.
I personally work with a number Special Constables and am very happy to do so. In many ways they are the unsung heroes of Bewdley as they assist with public order, traffic enforcement and our many community events.
With that in mind I hope that you will share my appreciation of Section Officer David Taylor, Special Constables Martin Bromley, Russell Fox, Hazel Webb and Amelia Baker for their dedication and hard work as part of the Local Policing Team here at Bewdley, under the leadership of North Worcestershire Special
I would also like to make particular mention of Clive Webster who until recently worked tirelessly as a Special at Bewdley for over twenty years!
I would like you, our community, to feel reassured that we will be doing everything in our power to keep our beautiful historic town centre free from disorder and rowdy behaviour. Also I would like to send out a clear message to the minority of people who commit drunken disorder in the town that this will not be tolerated and action will be taken against you.
I will sign off by wishing you all a happy and enjoyable summer and let’s hope England bring home the World Cup! Best Wishes.

Dear Editor, I refer to a letter from Mr AB Whatton. I think the picture he paints of Lyttleton Rd problems needs closer examination. In my capacity as Chair of Neighbourhood Watch I contacted the Local Police in January 2010 and discussed the matter with them. Because of the concern by the Local Policing Team a discrete night time police presence was set up. Five youths were stopped as a result of a phone call subsequently action taken. The result ? No more reports of rowdiness by anyone since February, so hardly an indictment of local youths. Rod Wilson NHW Dear editor, I don’t think people who live on the west side of the river realise how lucky they are to have parks where people can hang out at the weekend. I live in Wribbenhall and there aren’t any parks for the older kids, only playgrounds for the young children. I am 15 years old and if I want to hang out with my mates I have to stand on the street and then the older generation grumble and moan. Bart Sylvester

Preparations for Pub’n Club
May-Day bank Holiday weekend saw the start of preparations for the Pub’ Club Regatta which will take place on June 5th.
Crews of four people who have never rowed before, or only rowed very little are now heading up and down (or occasionally straight across!) the river as they train for the knockout races on the day. They are coached by current members of the rowing club and use the distinctive wooden boats which have been expertly restored.
Learning to row all at the same time is one of the biggest challenges, and the aim is for a crew to progress from the early ‘spider-on-roller-skates’ effect to a smooth action where all four oars drop into the water at the same moment! This is an exhilarating feeling as the combined effort of the rowers propels the boat towards that finish line!
This is followed by a trip to the bar for the de-brief and re-hydration of the athletes. Above everything else Pub’n Club is FUN. We hope that you will come and watch, and in future take part. The winning team is rewarded with a year’s membership of the Rowing Club…try it! It could change your life…..

ELDERLY TAX PAYERS
You may be entitled to a tax refund. H M Revenue have recently written to tax payers who received a repayment in previous years, advising them that they are no longer required to complete a tax return. This is misleading, as tax repayments will be lost if no return is submitted. We have successfully secured repayments for clients who erroneously believed that their affairs were correct. If you have received tax repayments before, speak to Nigel or Tim, who will advise you free of charge, whether a submission would prove beneficial.

Who Pays the Ferryman?
Community News
Thank you to everyone who has sent photographs and memories of the Arley Ferry ready for the Friends Exhibition this August and September in the Wyre Forest gallery of Bewdley Museum.
We have lots of interesting stories to share but we are still looking for memories from some of the other local ferry crossings. Can you help?
In particular we would like to share your memories and photographs of the following ferries:- Quatford, Hampton Loade, Highley, Hampstall, The Burf, Holt Fleet and the Camp.
The history of the ferries really comes alive with personal memories from the days when we really did walk a lot further to get about our daily business.
Early last month I crossed for the first time on the recently reinstated Hampton Loade Ferry and talking to the Ferryman Darren it is apparent that memories are being created again today for the future. It is well worth crossing the Severn there to experience what making that daily passage must have been like.
WRIBBENHALL W.I.
Mrs. Beryl Bubb welcomed members to the May meeting. The Group Outing was planned for May 17th arranged by Lickhill W.I. Numbers were taken for a visit to Hunters End Gardens, Button Bridge on 13th July. The resolution to be presented at the A.G.M. on the correct labelling of food stuffs with country of origin as well as packing was passed.
In fact did you know that the Hampton Loade ferry ended up in Bewdley in 1957 when it broke free due to a floating tree trunk in the flooded river? Mr Bill Parkes, the ferryman, was rescued by the Arley Ferryman Bert Evans who was awarded a Royal Humane Society medal for his efforts.
Can you add to the stories that we already have? Please contact Penny and David Griffiths on 01299 404912 or pennygriffiths@tiscali.co.uk or pop and see us in Dog Lane. Who Pays the Ferryman? runs from August 21st to September 26th in Bewdley Museum. Memories as soon as possible please – dead line end of this month – June! Penny Griffiths Chair The Friends of Bewdley Museum.
Mrs. Patricia Jones brought the Institutes Archive Records and pointed out interesting snippets from more recent books. These together with the old records were placed around the room for members to look at.
The next meeting at the Riverside Church, Dog Lane, Bewdley, will be a talk by Heather Flack on “Wribbenhall – The Overlooked Hamlet”. This will be at 2pm. on June 14th. All are welcome. Venetia Crutch.

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS
Community News
TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 4TH MAY 2010 Annual Town Meeting The Annual Town Meeting took place on 26th April and was well attended by members of the public who were able to hear representatives of the main organisations and voluntary groups in Bewdley talk about their work. Town Councillors also gave a report of their activities for the year. Wribbenhall Millennium Green Councillors had previously agreed to search for a suitable allotment site within Bewdley and Wribbenhall as none exist at present and there is a demand for them. A Working Group had identified part of the Millennium Green as potentially being suitable for some allotments and the Council approved this idea in principle. Further discussions will take place with the Transition Bewdley Land Group which is pressing for a site to be provided to check whether they felt an area of the Green would be suitable for such use. Highway Matters It was agreed that further contact should be made with the Bewdley County Councillor to arrange for parking restrictions ie double yellow lines to be extended to the “civic space” on Severnside South as problems with parking persisted there. Some discussion took place about the conflict between pedestrians and vehicles especially in summer months along Severnside North which was increasingly seen as a “promenade”. The suggestion was to designate it as being for “Access Only” but how that might be enforced was not easy to resolve River Severn Dredging Councillors noted a letter from the Environment Agency to say that dredging the river was not a viable option as a means of reducing the flood risk as sometimes suggested. Mayor’s Civic Service This has been fixed for Sunday 6th June at 11.00am at St Anne’s Church with a parade to and from The Guildhall Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall are: Annual Council Meeting (Mayor-Making) Friday 4th June at 7.30pm.
Monday 7th June, Monday 5th July, Monday 2nd August all at 7.30pm
Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. They are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk. TOWN COUNCIL NEWS IS PRODUCED AND PUBLISHED BY BEWDLEY TOWN COUNCIL

This is the month when the young of many forest creatures usually appear, although the cold spring may have delayed things this year.
Hidden away in their various homes will be baby rabbits, bats, hedgehogs and fawns of fallow deer. Blue and Great Tit broods will be fledging and tree holes full of woodpecker babies can be heard squawking when their parents arrive with food.
In the world of invertebrates, moths can be seen flying on warm evenings, bees and hoverflies will be busy around nectar-rich flowers, and damselflies and dragonflies will bring a splash of colour to the air above ponds.
We hope to see several species of woodland butterfly emerging this month, so it’s a good time to take to the woods with some expert help to look for Small Pearl-bordered Fritillaries, Common Blues, Small Coppers, Meadow Browns and Large Skippers. See if you can come to an identification day, listed below. This month the following events start at the Forestry Commission’s Callow Hill Visitor Centre:
Tuesday 1st June – Forest Fairies and Pixies Follow a fairy trail, look for fairy homes and make something magical to take home. £3 each, ages 3 – 11. Start between 10.30 and 12noon. No need to book.
Friday 4th June – Lucky Dip Find out what lives in the forest’s ponds. 10.30am to 12noon, £3.50 per child. 5 to 11 years. Booking essential: please ring 01299 266929.
Friday 25th June – Dusk Walk. A night-time summer forest walk looking for

bats, owls and, maybe, glow-worms. Wear warm clothes and bring a torch. 9pm to 11pm. Adults, £6 each. Booking essential: please ring 01299 266929.
Don’t forget Forest Friends who are a group of pre-school children and their carers meeting every term-time Thursday from 10am to 11am for forest-based play and activities led by Discovery Centre staff. Then there are Health Walks every Tuesday and Sunday starting from the Visitor Centre at 11am to build fitness at a gentle pace. For more information on any of these please ring the above number.
There are two courses being run by Grow With Wyre for landowners and volunteers in the Scheme area:
Friday 18th June repeated Saturday 19th June – Orchard Wildlife Learn why a traditional orchard is such a valuable habitat and what can be done to enhance it. The day is based at Uncllys Farm and will include time in the old cherry orchard looking for signs of invertebrates, birds, fungi and other wildlife. 9.30am to 4.00pm(bring a packed lunch). To book email john@uncllys.co.uk or call (01299) 488083. Saturday 19th June – Butterfly ID Training Day (also 10th July – you can come on both) A day with tutors Rosemary Winnall and Mike Williams for beginners and those who want to learn more about life cycles and recording. There will be a session indoors followed by fieldwork in the forest. New Community Discovery Centre, 10.30am to 4.00pm (bring a packed lunch). Looking back on Guiding
Here are photos of me and my family in Guiding - note the improvement in the comfort of the Uniform!!! Since joining 2nd Bewdley Brownies around 1974 I have been a Guide and a Ranger Guide. In 1992 I became Guide Leader - I was never a Rainbow because these didn't exist when I was five!!! My mum Joyce Moore was a Guide Leader with 2nd Bewdley Guides in the early 1980's. My older brother Adrian was a Cub and is now Assistant Venture Scout Leader with the Severn Valley Ranger Venture Unit. My daughter Megan joined in 2001 and has since been a Brownie and a Guide with 1st Wribbenhall Guides. She is soon to take her Promise as a Young Leader with 1st Bewdley Brownies. My husband Robert Williams is soon to celebrate 50 years continuous membership of the Scout Association. He joined on his 8th birthday and has never left the movement! He has been Assistant County Commissioner and is now Secretary for the Activate Team Scout Fellowship. (Again he was never a Beaver Scout because these didn't exist either 50 years ago!) His mum Eileen Williams was a Cub Leader at Far Forest and his brother Colin was also a member of 3rd Bewdley (Wribbenhall) Scout Group. My dad's family also has a history of Scouting in Bewdley. In essence Scouting and Guiding really is a way of life - for our family at least! Alison Williams (nee Moore)
Local railway carriage restorers scoop top national award
Bewdley-based railway enthusiasts have won a national award for a 1922 Great Northern Railway carriage restored over nine years. This cost £186,000, helped by an £84,000 Heritage Lottery Fund grant. Rebuilding from a derelict rotten shell, the LNER (SVR) Coach Fund used teak recovered from the cargo of a ship sunk in 1917. Their volunteers have been restoring such carriages in Bewdley Station yard since 1977, interest centring on the designs of Sir Nigel Gresley, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the former LNER (famous for Flying Scotsman and Mallard). The result is the SVR’s wonderful varnished teak train, one of the line’s proudest assets. The Heritage Railway Association chose the award-winning carriage, GNR 2701, as their latest overall winner. It is a period restoration to the highest standards. Authenticity and attention to detail are breathtaking. GNR 2701 is a work of art and now carries fare-paying passengers on SVR trains. Half the carriage has first class compartments and, for a modest £3 supplement, passengers can travel in these superbly restored seats in which royalty would not feel out of place. The award, a vintage railway lamp, is displayed in the SVR’s Highley ‘Engine House’, alongside the locomotives, stock and other artefacts there.
