The BRIDGE March 2011

Bewdley Needs You!!! It’s at this time of year that Bewdley’s multitude of volunteer groups starts gearing up the events calendar. Probably the biggest of these is the Festival team, who are already well underway preparing big time entertainment for next October. The recent sponsor’s reception at beautiful Kateshill House showed just how strong the interest in the Festival is – now in its 24th year. I am sworn to secrecy, of course, but as the Festival’s Empress, Jenny Paddock has already spilled the beans about who is not coming, I can announce that George Clooney and Brad Pitt have declined.Apparently, they don’t wish to be upstaged by our local Adonis-like dignitaries, Derek Killingworth and Paul Gittens, who bear a striking resemblance to a Hollywood double-act from another era – think bowler hats and a piano! Seriously, though, Bewdley’s committees and events organisers need new blood. Already past my first half century, I am considered the rookie on the block by the Festival Committee, so we definitely need new helpers to add energy and ideas to the mix. Just off the top of my head we have the Spring Fair, Discover Bewdley, the 40s Weekends, the Regatta,The Harvest Fair, Octoberfest,The Festival, Christmas lights and much, much more to look forward to. It’s what makes Bewdley unique in this part of the world. It also brings the community together and will make 2011 a happier year for us all.All this takes an mighty amount of work. There is a huge talent resource in Bewdley, so go on, get off your backsides and volunteer. It’s fun! You can find most of the contacts through the Festival Office at Snuff Mill on Park Lane or through the Bewdley Development Trust at the same address. Neville Farmer
Free course on orchards There are free courses for people who have an orchard or would like to plant one. They are on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th March at Uncllys Farm, Bewdley. Full details can be provided by Emma Bogaard on 01299 488083 (emma@wyreclt.org.uk ).The courses are led by Worcestershire County Council’s orchard expert Wade Muggleton and will include good orchard practice, preparing orchard management plans and pruning. “This is the second course of its type that we have run” said Emma Bogaard. “The last course was very successful and gave the participants the confidence to prune trees correctly and restore their old orchards. In and around the Wyre forest there are nearly 300 remnants of the orchards that once flourished near Bewdley. Now in the later stages of their lives the orchard trees are a very important habitat for many species. Our courses are helping to restore these orchards to their former glory.” The courses are funded by by Grow With Wyre and there is a £10 non-refundable booking fee.
Editorial
The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley.
It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month. Well, my hopes for a February full of postmen in shorts didn’t happen….. As I write the barriers are up along Severnside North, and the gales have blown down our lovely new Bridge poster at Beales Corner. Ah, well, we do live in Worcestershire, and I hope the sign will soon be up on its feet again soon. We’re quietly proud of it, and I keep going across to stand and admire it. February also saw me taking photos of the St Anne’s congregation. I wasn’t invading their privacy; we have a church photo album containing a photo and a short piece explaining the person’s name and something about them. As I walked back home I thought how handy it would be to have a Bewdley Town equivalent. Then as you said a cheery “Hello” to someone you pass most days you could look in the book and discover that they were called Colin Firth and lived next door. Huh, dream on. Incidentally, just because there’s a photo of me at the top of the page, don’t think you’ll recognise me in the street. That photo is 18 months old and the trials of being editor means I’m now so bent and wrinkled I’m unrecognisable. So I’ll go and have a little nap now before sending this to young David, who is compiling this month’s Bridge. Margaret

How to Make Hot Cross Buns The next meeting of the Transition Bewdley Food Group is on Thursday 14th April 2011 at 7pm (a week earlier than normal). One of our members, Colin Cooper, a retired pastry lecturer, will come and show us how to make Hot Cross Buns. Just in time for Easter, come and learn how to make a very special treat for all your family. I'm sure they would be thrilled with the aroma of plump and shiny fresh-baked rolls on Good Friday morning. Colin will demonstrate how to make the dough and there will be lots of samples to taste. The Food Group meets regularly at the Baptist Church in High St, Bewdley on the third Thursday of the month (with the exception of this April owing to Easter). Admission is free but the organisers welcome donations of suitable food or cookery-related items for the sales table to help cover the room charge. Whose Delusion ? Dealing with Richard Dawkins "Faith is the great cop-out, the great excuse to evade the need to think and evaluate evidence. Faith is belief in spite of, even perhaps because of, the lack of evidence." (Richard Dawkins) Richard Dawkins’ The God Delusion has been one of the most divisive books of modern times – championed by atheists & dismissed by faith groups. Over the course of 5 weeks in Lent we’ll take a careful look at Dawkins’ attacks on religion and what response can be made. Monday evenings beginning 14th March, 7.30pm Led by Mike Robinson Further details from Rev Keith James (402275)
Lent Lunches 2011 – The 7 Deadly Sins This year on Monday lunchtimes at St Anne’s in Lent, beginning 14th March, we’re looking at the Seven Deadly Sins. They became a well known part of Church’s teaching by the Middle Ages. They have their roots in the life and work of a 4th Century monk called Evagrius. He believed that these ‘seven cracks in the heart’ could be healed and our life transformed through awareness and careful treatment of these fractures. Sin has become a rather absent item from much of modern church life. This Lent we take an extended look at sin, the struggles of being human, and how to live a more healthy Christ-life life. The sinful line up is Lust, Gluttony, Avarice, Anger, Sloth,Vanity and Pride Sign up on the list at the back of St Anne’s to book your place for a soup lunch and food for thought

A Lucky Deadly Sin I was in St Anne’s the other day and got into conversation about the cold weather, and the man I was talking too said that he didn’t need to wear a hat as his mop of hair kept him warm! He was very proud of having so much hair at his advanced age, but then added that pride was a sin! Well, of course, in the Bible there are seven deadly sins and pride is indeed the first one of them. But I am glad that I suffer from pride or at least vanity as it may have prolonged my life. I have always been proud of my upper arms being slim and firm and always wore sleeveless dresses. When, in 2003 I discovered a tiny pearly lump on one of them, I hurried to the doctor to have it removed because it was spoiling my beauty! Neither she nor I thought it was dangerous but it turned out to be a Malignant Melanoma, the deadly form of skin cancer. I had always been a sun worshipper and laid out in the sun in the hope that my red-haired, white skin would assume some sort of tan, to little avail. This was the result! I still have slim, firm upper arms, but now there is a 2” circular cavity there from having to have a wide and deep incision done to make sure all the cancer had been removed. Hopefully it was, but no longer do I wear sleeveless dresses! Now I am like a reformed smoker who tells people of the dangers of smoking, but in my case it is checking that all the people I see sun bathing have on Factor 50! So in the coming months when the sun comes out at last, make sure you take great care and slap on the sun cream and wear a hat! Thelma Quayle
Volunteers wanted Local Children’s charity Mentor Link needs more volunteer mentors to support young children in schools. The charity works in the newly built Birchen Coppice Primary School where Lianne Billingsley writes, “ We have a team of volunteer mentors who support 30 children each week in school and have a positive impact on many of our youngsters. They can be a listening ear, someone to play a game with, someone to read to or someone to teach knitting! All of them are eagerly awaited and offer us great support in many ways.” The volunteer mentors come into school
each week to befriend and support the children with a range of issues from family breakdown to help with school work. The aim of the mentor is to support the children and create a more positive attitude towards learning. The charity now requires more mentors to support children in new schools requiring Mentor Links services. Induction and ongoing training is provided and all mentors are supported by our staff within the different schools. The charity is dedicated to supporting local children in local schools. For further information please contact Claire Quinn on 07973572768 or 01299 400616 email cquinn@baxtercollege.worcs.sch.uk. Registered charity number 1106171

Tails of a Veterinary Practice – life at Riverside Vets as seen by Gavin the practice cat. This month let me start by saying thank you to Pauline for her kind letter bringing to my attention the nuisance of seagulls. I have been pondering the subject in between my naps. I have not yet arrived at a solution being somewhat of a sedate cat myself, but I will continue to give the matter some thought in my spare time. On other subjects, I have been most confused this month. A number of my humans have been absent for a week and then returned talking about something called skiing. I have gathered that this is an activity that some humans like to do where they slide about on snow. In my opinion this is not very clever; as far as I can tell snow is wet, cold and slippery and generally best avoided! However, since they have all returned in one piece and been very pleased to see me I have decided not to express my displeasure at their absence and the resultant lack of cuddles. I suppose they do deserve a break sometimes; as long as it doesn’t happen too often. More from me again soon, Gavin
Cuts in Bus Services - have your say now! Worcestershire County Council has announced a consultation on bus service reductions as a result of the spending reductions announced by the Government. The proposals include no evening buses to Bewdley and none all day on Sundays. They include reductions to services 2, 292 and 300. Bewdley Development Trust has previously successfully campaigned for evening buses. Now is the time to have your say! More details are available in the library, at the Worcestershire Hub in Load Street or on the website www.worcestershire.gov.uk/public http://www.worcestershire.gov.uk/public&schoolbusservicereview The deadline for comments is 1 April 2011.

You can help make a difference to Bewdley Local community groups are being asked to play an active role in our town by nominating people who could join the Bewdley Environment and Town Centre Group. This is a group which has Bewdley at its heart and seeks to: To promote improvements to and further development of the appearance, functions, facilities, buildings and amenities including parks and green spaces of Bewdley. To protect and promote its historic character and heritage as a Market Town, and work towards its future sustainability. To lobby and campaign for improvements and the development of the physical environment of the town. The group meets bi-monthly and is facilitated by Bewdley Development Trust. The next meeting is on 28th March at 6 pm at Snuff Mill Warehouse, Park Lane, Bewdley DY12 2EL. To find out more or to nominate a representative, please contact Peter Miller on 01299 405516 or petermiller@bewdley.org.uk Bewdley Libary
Who do we think we are? (...and where?) If this caught your attention, chances are you're one of the many people who is currently researching (or intending to) their family history. The popularity of the BBC's "Who Do You Think You Are?" has led to an increase in the number of people curious to discover their roots. In Bewdley, family and local history frequently combine into a rich mixture, as many families have been in the town for generations. March is Local and Family History Month at the library, and we are lucky to have the benefit of local historian Heather Flack's research once again, as she appears at the library on Saturday March 19th at 2 pm to deliver a talk about local people and families, catchily entitled 'Manhunt'. Admission will be by (free) ticket only; contact library staff for details. Photograph competition We will also be running our almost legendary photograph competition again this year see how many obscure/old photos of the town you can identify. I'm organising this event this year, so if you come along and find it too easy or difficult, please remember I've only lived here for ten years and therefore hardly qualify as local! Our local history expert Finally, several of you have already benefited from the advice of our very own family history expert, Lynn Booth. Lynn has a passion for family history and will be arranging taster sessions this month to help people get started with this popular and absorbing interest. Again, pop in and see us if you're interested. Kay

Save energy and £900 for free!? First of all humble pie! Gremlins got into the works last month and there was a slip that did not get corrected in the article about Solar PV panels to generate electricity. The Feed in Tariff (FIT) is 41.3 pence per unit generated not 0.413p as printed (although I suppose I could have pretended that this meant 0.413 pounds and that would have been OK!). This means that every unit you generate is worth anything from 42.8 pence (in the highly unlikely event that you do not use any of the electricity yourself) up to 53.8 pence per unit if you were to use all of the electricity being generated (and of course you will time your use of electricity to try and achieve this situation). All other figures and conclusions were correct so the bottom line is that I am finding that our system is giving about a 9% return on costs (being cautious and presuming that we use just 50% of what we generate ourselves). Even better, you may qualify for a £1000 grant from Wyre Forest District Council, but perhaps not for much longer. Enquire via the Hub on 01562 732926 (contact at
present is Richard Osborne). It is at least worth a phone call to see if it is still on offer as £1000 towards your costs would make the sums even more appealing. This month’s suggested gadget will cost you nothing, but might save you £900 over its lifetime according to the supplier Eaga. They claim, “The average family of 4 would save about £30 off their gas bills and over £30 off their water bills (where metered) per year, which could equate to £900 over its lifetime”. The “Showersmart” is supplied free of charge. It is a flow regulator for mixer showers (but not electric ones). It is easily fitted between the mixer tap and the shower hose and will be useful if your present arrangement results in a faster flow than necessary. The free kit includes all you need to measure flow rates before and after and is so simple to fit (or remove) that it is well worth a try; we are pleased with ours so far. Apply and get further details online at www.eaga.com/freeshowersmart or enquire via 0191 247 3800 (Switchboard).

Barty and Frazzle Frazzle continues to make good progress with her training. Fully grown (weighing 30 kgs), she enjoys a good walk but because she will be a working dog her days are varied in terms of exercise. Some days she will have an intensive training walk on lead. Appropriate behaviour is reinforced with a treat, inappropriate ignored. I have to consider the number of treats she has had and reduce her meal accordingly. It is vital she does not become overweight. Frazzle has unfortunately been ill for a couple of months. Last week she was diagnosed with campylobacter which causes cramp, abdominal pain and intermittent diarrhoea. She is being treated with an antibiotic used to treat humans.

Bewdley/Wribbenhall Ladies Luncheon Club Heather Flack spoke to us at the January meeting, about “Bewdley Long Ago”. This local history was of great interest to members. On 30th March we welcome back Dianne Mannering, who will speak to us on “Born to Rule”. All ladies are invited to attend our monthly meetings at the Ramada Hotel. For information please ring 400363.
Why am I sharing this with you? Frazzle could quite possibly have become ill as a result of coming into contact with infected faeces and this could be passed on to humans. Our town is becoming spoiled by the irresponsible behaviour of dog walkers who don't bother to clean up after their dogs. The High Street and Lax Lane seem particularly bad, much to the annoyance of both residents and visitors. Potentially there is a risk to dogs, other animals and more importantly children. It is time to name and shame. Let's clean up our streets and eradicate this potential hazard and unpleasantness. Gabi Wootton
Delivering the Bridge Thanks to all who have responded to the call for more deliverers. Paul and Janet Mann (400794) tell me we have nearly all the houses covered now. There’s always a need for more people; holidays and other reasons mean that people can’t always manage a particular month. If you can help out, you’ll get the team’s gratitude and a chance to discover some lovely front gardens – even some little alleyways you never knew existed. Paul will pass you on to Maureen Golbourne if you prefer to deliver to the Wribbenhall side of the river. Go on – it’s good exercise and cheaper than the gym!

Tin Tabernacle Tour at Button Oak It was full house at St. Andrews Church in Button Oak on a cold Tuesday evening in January. The chapel in the woods featured in a nationwide tour of Tin Tabernacles by folk duo Trevor Moss and Hannah Lou supported by guitar players Pepe Delmonte and Pete Greenwood.
You chance to savour the true taste of Dexter beef People in and around Bewdley have the opportunity to buy beef from the Dexter herd which graze naturally on pasture land in the National Nature Reserve. The beef is being sold from the 11th March at Uncllys Farm Bewdley. Full details are available from Emma Bogaard of Wyre Community land Trust on 01299 488083 (emma@wyreclt.org.uk). “These animals graze naturally with excellent husbandry and stress free conditions, all of which makes a major contribution to the quality of the beef” said Emma Boggard. “We use a local abattoir where the beef is hung for 21 days to give its rich taste and texture. All our beef comes from Dexter cattle, which originated from south west Ireland and are descended from the predominantly black cattle of the early Celts.
The idea for a tour of Tin Tabernacles came from Trevor Moss and Hannah Lou following a successful previous tour of village halls. The husband and wife songwriting partnership started after they met in Goldsmith's College, London.
Dexter cattle are renowned for their good texture and excellent quality brought upon by marbling of the beef. Marbling is the small white flecks of fat within the meat muscle. The greater amount of marbling in beef, the higher the grade because marbling makes beef more tender, flavourful and juicy.
The church was a fantastic venue to listen to accomplished music playing from a band to watch for in the future. With over 60 people packed into the small venue it made for a great atmosphere.
The Wyre Community Land Trust is based at a working farm with Pedigree Dexter cattle, Berkshire/ Large Black/ Gloucester Old Spot pigs and Jacob sheep.

Bus Stop Buzz A. Look at that chap feeding the seagulls. One pecked the bread right out of his hand! B. They’re getting too bold these days. Just like the pigeons. Making our buildings all messy. A. Y’ know; having to wait here for the bus has made me look more closely at the birds. B: ‘Know what y’mean. Have you noticed that odd looking duck? There he is. He’s just dived under. That can’t be a mallard; they don’t dive. A: That’s a goosander. It has a little hooked beak, and different shaped head to a mallard. A: How do you know all this? B: Well, it’s like I said; having time to wait for the bus makes you more aware of your surroundings. Take for instance those ‘seagulls’ you mentioned earlier. They are black headed gulls. A: But they haven’t got black heads! B: That’s because they are in their winter colours. A: Then what about that pigeon. He’s different to all the rest. B: That’s a collared dove. Can you see that dark brown ring round the back of his neck? That bird was first seen in this country in the 1950s; now you often see them in pairs in your garden. I think they look more elegant than your common pigeon. A: This will get you! That one with all the bright colours. B: That beauty ‘s a mandarin duck. Although we can see only one from here, there are literally, over a hundred up-river, by Dowles. Came from China originally. And funnily enough, likes to build its nest in holes in trees. A: Don’t think of ducks doing that, do you. Ey’up, here’s the 292. Bet you don’t know what that bird is. B: Where? A: That one …… high up in the sky. See yuh.
Winter Training As the river levels go up and down like the proverbial yo-yo, and high winds also make rowing difficult, winter training in the gym features more often than some of us would like! It is clearly so important to keep up levels of fitness and stamina, but when faced with a run round ‘The Triangle’ (along the Kidderminster Road to the roundabout, turn right along the by-pass and then back to the rowing club along the Stourport Road) or a 5km ergo session, enthusiasm can be in short supply. So when you see red-faced runners as you walk around town, do give us a smile of encouragement! But now that the evenings are discernably lighter, crews are beginning to row in the late afternoons, and that means that Spring is not too far away!

Bewdley is steeped in history and where there’s history there are nearly always old tales associated with certain buildings. There are many spine tingling stories especially associated with the Old Work House and the Redthorne not to mention several of Bewdley’s pubs. The Tourist Information Centre and Museum have their own unexplained goings on which is not surprising considering the history attached to the building. Over time it’s been home to a butcher’s shambles, the town cells, a police station, fire station and town mortuary and below ground there is a labyrinth of tunnels and cellars. In addition Saturday 5 March sees a special Ghost Hunt at Bewdley Station from 7.30 pm till late which is expected to generate a large amount of interest. Tickets for the above events can be obtained from the TIC – only if you dare.
The deadline for the April Issue of the Bridge is the 10th March

On Friday 21st January, St Anne’s Primary School held their Winter Fayre. Rescheduled because of bad weather conditions before Christmas, it was lacking the lure of Santa’s grotto but the St Anne’s Got Talent competition seemed to pull the crowds. Pupils had already been through an gruelling audition process with Bewdley’s own versions of the glamorous panel, Kate Adams, Alison Spall and Claire Broadhurst (cast them as you will) selecting the twelve finalists. For the final we had Bewdley’s answer to Simon Cowell, our editor, joining the judges and Alison stepping down with Simon Tapp doing a fine job as both Ant and Dec. And what an array of talent! We had two solo performers from Year One who treated us to a song, two acts showing us their “smooth” Michael Jackson moves, a poetry recital, a cheeky chappy doing a spot of stand up, an impressive Tae Kwon Do demonstration, some very popular Irish dancing, three fabulous dance acts, one of them on stilts and finally our deserving winner, James Bastable with his singing and dancing rendition of “Consider Yourself” from Oliver. The event was a big hit (sadly with no Royal Variety Performance for James) with St Anne’s pupils demonstrating that they have lots of talent. Julia Ertas

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 7th FEBRUARY 2011 Bewdley Town Crier The Mayor put forward a proposal which was agreed to by the full Council that Bewdley should once again have its own Town Crier in common with many old established towns and boroughs in England and Wales. The Town Crier’s main role is to be present at events taking place in the town particularly those during the summer months to add colour and atmosphere to the occasion. The role will be voluntary ie unpaid but a uniform will be provided for which the Town Council is looking for sponsors to cover the cost. Anyone who might be interested in the job please contact the Guildhall with a view to taking part in a formal street competition later in the Spring/Summer. Climate Week The Town Council agreed to support Climate Week which is due to take place during 21st to 27th March across the UK to show how we can all help to combat climate change. The idea is that businesses, schools, charities and individuals can publicise any practical examples they have of how, with either small improvements or innovations, we can all reduce carbon emissions. Beales Corner Notice Board We are sorry to report that the Council’s notice board blew down in the strong winds of the week-end of 5th/6th February. We will try to get this reinstated as soon as possible. Home to School Transport & Subsidised Bus Services Two important consultations are being carried out at the moment by the County Council. They relate to potential reductions in Home to School Transport and Subsidised Bus Services. The consultation closes on 1st April. Further details can be found online at www.worcestershire.gov.uk or from the “Hub” offices in Load Street. Royal British Legion “Great Poppy Party Weekend” The Council received details of how nationally the Royal British Legion is promoting a Poppy Party over the weekend of 10th to 12th June to commemorate the RBL’s 90th birthday. The Council agreed it would like to work with the local RBL Branch to arrange a celebration for Bewdley. Future Town Council meetings Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall on Mondays (except where indicated) at 7.30pm are: 7th March, 4th April and 3rd May (Tuesday). The Annual Town Meeting (of the Townspeople) will take place on Monday 18th April The Annual Council Meeting (Mayor Making) will take place on Friday 13th May Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. Discover Bewdley – Spring Fair – Sunday 1st & Monday 2nd May The plans for the annual Spring Fair are picking up apace with the local Arts & Crafts market booked for the Sunday and on the Monday we will be saying ciao to Italia Piazza, a new addition to Bewdley, a mostly food market of all things Italian! The Love Food Hate Waste campaign will be bringing their road show to the town www.lovefoodhatewaste.com - with chefs demonstrating how to use leftovers and giving away samples. The Museum will have a busy schedule of activities with the Kaleidoscope Theatre group having a pirate theme and to tie in with the 650 Years of Magistracy exhibition, Tickety Boo will be holding court outside the Guild Hall and sending offenders to the dungeons! The second annual Giant Snakes & Ladders “game” will take place on the bank holiday Monday using the streets of the town as the “board”. Computing for the over 55’s
Get on line with the BBC and Wyre Academy Bewdley's specialist IT training organisation, the Wyre Academy, is teaming up with the BBC to provide low cost computer training to the over 55's. This follows the free courses that it started to provide in January. “The response to our free courses was tremendous and we helped many people to feel at home on the computer ”said Ely Kent. "Now by being a partner with the national BBC campaign, we will be able to continue to help people to use popular software, emails and the internet." The courses will be run on a Friday morning in Bewdley and led by highly experienced IT teachers. There is only a nominal charge of £5 per session to cover the cost of the room, equipment, trainers and broadband. Demand for the courses, which start in mid March, is expected to be high and places will be on a first come first served basis. For more information or to book a place please contact Ring Derek,Tom or Ellie on 01299 405719.
March in the forest I’m still here, for the moment, and the same is true of your forests. There are proposals for big changes in who manages the public forests and I urge you to voice your opinions online at www.forestry.gov.uk/england-pfeconsultation . There will also be an information evening on 12th March at the Community Discovery Centre – details to be announced. In the Wyre Forest we can be proud of our track record. Originally set up to provide a strategic timber supply for the nation, the Forestry Commission has evolved to do so much more in response to the concerns of the day. Positive management actions have been taken to help threatened wildlife such as the Wood White Butterfly, bats, Dormice, Great Crested Newts and Adders. Facilities are created and maintained for walkers, riders and cyclists with much time being spent in consultation meetings. Income from timber sales is maximised while still ensuring that the forest is a sustainable resource, with income from car parks and permits helping to reduce the cost to the Treasury. About 10,000 people enjoy our education activities annually, and if you would love to explore the forest but don’t know quite how to start then the Forestry Commission has several regular events which will help you to do just that. This month the buds are bursting and the activity of all the forest wildlife goes up a notch. Hawthorn leaves are often the first to appear, followed by hazel, rowan, elder and bright green larch needles. Hazel and
birch catkins will be dying and falling off the trees but you can still look out for “pussy willow” and, towards the end of the month, blackthorn providing the first of the white spring blossoms. I love to collect a few of the twigs and bring them indoors. The warmth will encourage the buds to open and the new leaves and flowers will encourage me that spring is on the way! Our regular Health Walks continue to meet at the Visitor Centre at 10.30am on Tuesdays or Sundays to register before the 11am walk. These walks are led by volunteers and there is no charge. Forest Friends meet at 10am each Thursday for an hour of forest activities for pre-school children and their carers. This is led by the Discovery Centre team who have a wealth of ideas to help little ones have fun in the natural world. There is a charge of £2 per child. On 2nd April there is an opportunity for gardeners to learn how to make their own Plant Supports, just in time for the growing season. The materials are locallygrown hazel and willow and you will be using them to produce a wigwam or fan. The course runs from 2pm to 5pm, costs £18 and must be pre-booked on (01299) 266929 Linda Iles, Forestry Commission
