Fairtrade Fun Day During Fairtrade Fortnight 45 Year 5 pupils from St Anne’s CE Primary School joined pupils from Franche Community School and Stourport Primary School for a day of Fairtrade fun and activities in Kidderminster Town Hall. This was arranged by the Midcounties Co-operative Community Programme and supported by Wyre Forest District Council and the Wyre Forest Fairtrade District Group. The children had a great time working with the theatre group Caboodle on a Fairtrade play (more of a pantomime really!), which they performed for parents and friends in the evening. The Co-op also laid on lots of fun activities and these are some of the children’s comments on the day. “I never knew that so many delicious fruits came from poor countries…The paper bag game was most fun but very stressful…The stage activity was strange; people in poor countries do this every day, I was shocked.” Jack and George “Mine and Ellie’s favourite activity was tasting chocolate.” Yang “The paper bag game was so hard. We tried chocolate, one was Fairtrade…We really enjoyed making a bag. We learned a lot about Fairtrade.” Megan and Thomas “We had a wonderful day…THANK YOU” Emily and Abby “We had a splendid day! Thank you!” Benjamin Elaine Barbour
Helping orphans in Belarus Hello! My name is Lucy Robinson and after my seven years at Bewdley High School I went on to Cardiff University. I have now completed three years of my medical degree and at present am taking a year out to complete an BSC in Cellular and Molecular Pathology. As part of my medical course and because I am an associate with Cardiff’s branch of the charity ‘SKIP’ (Students for Kids International Projects) I have been given the opportunity to spend two weeks at Novinki Orphanage in Belarus from 17th - 3rd July 2011. So that I can finance my trip and raise money for the children of Novinki Orphanage I am holding the following event: Refreshments, Raffle & Light Lunches In St Anne’s Church Saturday 4th June 10:30 – 4:00 I’m really hoping you can come along and give me your support Lucy Robinson
Editorial
The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley.
It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month. Aah! May, my favourite month. The awful winter is a past memory, I’ve got all my veg seeds sown, the dawn chorus wakes me up at an unearthly hour and everywhere nature is shouting,“Come and look at me!”. Best of all, there’s still all of the summer ahead. Sorry for that sudden burst of cheerfulness; I promise to resume my usual boring self soon. It is astonishing what a difference the sun makes, though, don’t you think? I noticed that sunny day we had last month – oh, come on, you must remember it – everyone seemed a lot more smiley and ready to say hello. I loved the way we all said the same thing – “Isn’t it lovely? Makes you think winter’s over at last”. I think we feel that after the battering we had last winter we actually really deserve to have a superb summer. I’m putting in a request for warm, not too hot, days with rainy nights for my veg.). I have a feeling I’ll look back on that request next month and snarl. So what’s your ideal weather? Send us your thoughts and we’ll print a selection. Margaret

Working to make Bewdley a great place to live, work and visit.
The allotment at the pub When Emma at the Hop Pole decided to try growing some of the food for the pub she made the ground around the Inn ‘an allotment’ and invited interested growers to work with her to develop the land. Under an agreed joint plan the grower would grow produce for themselves and also for the pub kitchen. Val Austin, an active member of The National Garden Scheme, stepped up to the challenge. Val and Emma’s rules were: grow organically, compost all green waste from the kitchen for use on the garden, have battery rescue hens to eat the weeds and keep down garden pests. Val has already started the first year’s work and so far the existing herb bed has been weeded and trimmed and the new season’s chives are already being used in the kitchen; a rough area on a steep slope has been roughly dug and sown with potatoes to ‘clean the area’; a border in front of the pub has been prepared for sweet peas and climbing French and Runner beans. Another bed has been planted with shallots, beetroot, carrots, chard, leeks and spinach; a further bed has been planted with broad beans and mangetout. We hope to tell you how we are doing with a report each month in The Bridge but you are welcome to stop and have a look as you go past!
Bewdley Museum – Crafts In Practice Days These are planned at the Museum in Bewdley for every third Sunday of the month between April and October The planned monthly Craft Days started on the 17th April. Come & Sing – Faure ‘Requiem’ & Vivaldi ‘Gloria’ Saturday 21st May – St. Mary’s Church – Kidderminster We would like to invite as many singers as possible to come and join us for this event which is being held to help raise money for Trinity Methodist Church Restoration Fund. As you may know the church was the victim of an arson attack and although now re-opened still has some way to go with its fund raising. Singers will meet at 2.00 p.m. for practice during the afternoon and then have a break for tea; the performance will begin at 7.00 p.m. If you can’t sing, don’t worry, we are also looking for a large audience! Anyone wishing to take part should contact us as soon as possible. We have hired music so if you don’t have your own copies you can still come and sing. Looking forward to meeting you. Dear Editor, Many thanks for publishing the photographs from the Museum collection for us. The first family group were identified by Janet Ince as her grandparents. In the next photograph the man in uniform was from the Boer war. He was Lance Corporal Henry Darkes, known as Harry. He was killed in France in WWI in 1917.
Now we are hoping your readers can help us with this photograph from the Museum collection. It shows the Mayor and Mayoress of Bewdley, Bill and Freda Purcell at what appears to be a party. The Mayoress is being presented with a bouquet by a young girl. We would like to identify where it was taken and the occasion and the name of the girl. If you have any information please contact Charles Purcell on 01299 403582 or leave a message at the Museum Charles Purcell

Wribbenhall Parish Room Our first local fundraising event, a barn dance held on 2nd April, was a wonderful evening attended by ninety people. Everyone had a marvellous time, with music by the Banjacs and Alan Ferguson as caller. Thanks to people’s generosity we raised £650. We now start our major fundraising from the lottery and other sources to enable us to completely upgrade and refurbish this facility given to the community in 1915. A treat for lovers of textiles Do you have an interest in textiles? If so, there’s a delightful treat in store for you during the month of May in Bewdley Library, when Forest Quilters will be exhibiting samples of their work throughout the month. The group has many talented members who produce both traditional patchwork and quilting and contemporary art work in textiles. We would be delighted if the people of Bewdley could spare a few minutes to see and, hopefully, to admire our members’ work. If this should tempt anyone to take up their needle and thread, or to dig out their sewing machine, we would be happy to welcome you to the group’s meetings, which are held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm at Trinity Methodist Church Centre Churchfields Kidderminster DY10 2JL. Beginners are welcome, along with more experienced stitchers. The first meeting in the month is usually a ‘Sit & Sew’ session, with a speaker at the second meeting. A copy of the group’s programme and details can be obtained from: Brenda Banner 01562 228535 Note: If you enjoy this small Exhibition, you may like to take a trip to Stourbridge on Saturday 7 May for Crystal Quilters’ Exhibition at St James’s Church Hall Wollaston Stourbridge DY8 3SE - 10.00am4.00pm (Admission £2.50, under-16s free).
second Saturday of every month at Bewdley Baptist Church. It is being run in the main hall at the same time as Who Let The Dads Out (for preschool aged children and their dads) takes place in the rear hall. Both events are free and more information is available from the church office or the church website. www.bewdleybaptist.org.uk Tel : 01299 403267
Bewdley Library Out and About As well as enjoying the enthusiasm of the Rhyme Time run by Riverside Children's Centre in the library on Friday mornings, our links with the centre mean that I occasionally get over there and have a great time with the little ones. A recent development at Riverside is the monthly Book Club; I take a box of children's books over to the centre, and parents and children can choose books to take home and return the next month. I stay most of the morning so I am on hand to answer any library/reading related questions as best I can, as well as chatting and playing for a bit! At the first session parents expressed an interest in having a selection of books for themselves, so I now take a small selection of adult reading books (i.e. books that aren't for children!) as well. We're hoping that this will be an occasion when parents can enjoy some grown up time, simply chat and say that they really enjoyed reading a particular book! Book Club at Riverside Children's Centre is on the last Thursday in every month. Hope to see you there soon. Kay Sanderson

Gardening in May We are now at the point of almost maximum effort in the gardening year so rather than focus on just one task here is a short list of things to do. Continue with grass cutting, lowering the cut until at the right height; if you suffer from a lot of moss or weeds keep the grass longer in order reduce their viability. Trim the lawn edge frequently with a D shaped cutter for good definition. Bedding plants will probably be ready to plant out towards the end of the month. In the meantime keep them protected during their hardening off period. Perennials, annuals and bulbs can be planted this month. Again don’t be tempted to put out warmer weather crops such as tomatoes, peppers, squashes and cucumbers until mid month. You need to be careful of that late frost! But most popular vegetable crops, carrots, lettuce, potatoes, beans and peas can be seeded and planted in to the ground any time now. Hedges and borders need to be trimmed and tidied. Apply a good mulch of compost, well rotted manure and bark to retain moisture , feed and suppress weeds. Before attacking the hedge check for nesting birds. Remember wherever they grow weeds are a nuisance and are best kept at bay now by regular hoeing. Avoid letting weeds go to seed. As everything grows apace remember to keep up with pruning, shaping, de-budding and trimming and support rapid growth with light applications of good fertilizers and staking where necessary. There will now be plenty of materials for composting: keep the heap moist, apply accelerators and keep turning. Stuart Williams
Cherry Fair Saturday 25th June, 2011 In front of Bewdley Town Hall Civic Society gazebo. 2pm until 4.30 pm Bring a few cherries of any varieties available to show what is growing locally. The early varieties should be ripe. Handle carefully to avoid bruising. To beat the birds pick early and fruits will ripen afterwards. It is hoped to display named varieties for comparison with new and unnamed discoveries to find old and local varieties. A Second Cherry Fair - for the later varieties Sunday17th July Bewdley Museum, 10.30 – 4.30 Coinciding with the Museum Craft Fair. As above bring any cherry varieties for identification (if possible). The above events are an attempt to revive the traditional Cherry Fair in Bewdley. A fair was set up with the Edward IV Charter of 1472. There is no mention of cherries in the charter, but the date, St. Anne’s Day, July 26th, is the nearest of the ancient fair days to the cherry season. So this date seems to have become a Cherry Fair, when or how we do not know, probably in the 19th century.

Community News The Green Corner
Cheaper Driving on an Egg We all know that walking or cycling are much greener (and healthier) than driving everywhere and for longer journeys, public transport normally has a much lower carbon footprint than cars. But what about those time when a car has to be used: how can we drive more economically? Many years ago I went to car maintenance classes. This is where the egg came in: “Drive as if you have eggs on the accelerator and brake” he would say. “Save petrol and the clutch!” Good advice that has stuck with me. For less eggcentric ideas, try these tips from the Energy Saving Trust www.energysavingtrust.org.uk 1. Drive Off From Cold. Modern cars are designed to move straight away. Warming up the engine just wastes fuel - and actually causes engine wear. 2. Check Your Revs. Change up before 2,500rpm (petrol) or 2,000rpm (diesel) 3. Drive Smoothly. Anticipate road conditions so that you drive smoothly and avoid sharp acceleration and heavy braking. This saves fuel and reduces accident rates. 4. Step Off The Accelerator. When slowing down or driving downhill, remain in gear but take your foot off the accelerator early. This reduces fuel flow to the engine to virtually zero.
5. Slow Down. Driving within the speed limit is safer as well as being the law, and reduces fuel consumption. 6. Stuck in traffic? Switch It Off. Modern cars use virtually no extra fuel when they are re-started without pressing the accelerator. Turn off the engine if you're going to be stationary for more than a minute or two. 7. Plan Ahead. Plan your journeys to avoid congestion and road works, and to make sure you don't waste fuel or time getting lost! 8. Keep It Long. Use other forms of transport for short journeys, if you can. A cold engine uses almost twice as much fuel and catalytic converters can take five miles to become effective. 9. Reduce Drag. Accessories such as roof racks, bike carriers and roof boxes significantly affect your car's aerodynamics and reduce fuel efficiency, so remove them when not in use. 10. Check Tyre Pressure. Under-inflated tyres are dangerous and increase fuel consumption. Air conditioning can significantly increase fuel consumption. Try switching it off, or use an 'eco' setting if you have one. However, if you are really hot and travelling at speed, air conditioning is better for fuel consumption than opening windows. How many miles per gallon do you get? What is your top tip? Brian Smith

The Garden at Bowcastle Farm.
Community News
During March and April things have moved on apace in the garden at Bowcastle Farm. The longer days and sunshine have seen lots of growth and some of the plants that I thought were lost in The Great Frost have reared their heads after all. The lawn is green, the early blossomers have bloomed and things are looking on track for May 21 when the garden will be open for the National Garden Scheme. But the next few weeks will be hectic with weeding, splitting and mulching. There is enough sweeping to wear out all the old brushes that my hoarder of a husband has collected and inherited over 40 years, the hard surfaces will need weed spraying first and the paraphernalia of a farm sorted out and tidied up, signs need to be erected and more cakes to be made, and our friends will have to be sweet-talked into manning the tea and cake stall and directing the traffic. But the best bit will be buying new shrubs! I have to say that the winter’s damage means I will have to go round some nurseries and make some purchases! Oh, dear, what a trial! Can’t wait! When you read the next instalment, it will be over. I will be recounting the experiences of the day. In the meantime we pray for sun and blue skies! Bowcastle Farm, Tanners Hill, Bewdley DY12 2LN will be open from 11am to 5pm on Saturday May 21st. Do come along and support us! Thelma Quayle

Who is going Cuckoo? The Friends of Bewdley Museum and the Pound Green Commoners Association need your help to map the presence of Cuckoos in the Wyre Forest this year. If you hear the distinctive calls during the spring and the summer please let us know. Leaflets are available at Wyre Forest Visitors Centre, Bewdley Museum and 5 Dog Lane. All of the records will be entered onto a master map and displayed in Bewdley Museum as part of the Friend’s Annual Exhibition. The Cuckoo has suffered a recent decline in numbers and they are now on the red list of endangered birds so this survey will play a very important part in their conservation by high lighting which areas of the forest they are using. The exhibition which runs from August 13th to September 25th tells the story that Pound Green played in the discovery and in particular filming, of the habits of the fascinating Cuckoo.
We do hope that you will visit “Cuckoo Chance – The Secret Life of the Cuckoo”; it is not just about the bird but has some important social history documentation that is perhaps disturbing in today’s more ecological world. Plus there is a very interesting link between the cuckoo and the light houses around our coastline. The cuckoo exhibition follows last year’s very successful “Who Pays the Ferryman?” story. If you would like to see some of the images and hear the stories again then sections of the Arley Ferry exhibition will be on display as part of Discover Bewdley on Bank Holiday Monday May 2nd at the site of “The Last resting Place of the Arley Ferry” at 5, Dog Lane, Bewdley. Just a final reminder that the AGM of the Friends of Bewdley Museum will take place on Wednesday May 18th at Bewdley Baptist Church. Everyone is welcome so please come along and have a chat with us.You can email for more information to fobmuseum@tiscali.co.uk. Penny Griffiths Chair The Friends of Bewdley Museum.

May in the forest At this time of year the forest rides and hedgerows are bursting with blossoms and blooms: each habitat with its own assemblage of flowers. The lush, damp stream sides are thick with ramsons with its pretty white star flowers and strong garlic smell. Elsewhere in the woods are carpets of bluebells, or you may be fortunate in finding a patch of sweetlyscented lily of the valley. The warm midday sun will bring hoards of insects to the hedgerow May blossom to feed on the nectar while the common brambles fulfil the same function in the woods. Butterflies Meanwhile the butterflies are beginning to seek out places to lay their eggs.Violets are particularly important as food plants for the fritillary butterflies, but the silver washed fritillary lays her eggs not on the violet leaves but hidden in the bark of an oak tree nearby. Orange tip butterflies lay eggs on garlic mustard (Jack by the hedge), and the caterpillars of brimstone butterflies will already be munching alder buckthorn leaves.

Cattle helping to restore the natural landscape of the Wyre To help monitor/look after around 40 cattle that graze 300 acres in and around the Wyre Forest, Alice Briggs has been appointed as a grazing apprentice. Funded by a grant of over £250,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to a partnership that includes the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, 12 apprentices are being appointed throughout the UK. “This is a wonderful opportunity to help to make a real difference to the Wyre landscape as many of the cattle are grazing on land which is being used to restore ancient meadows and traditional orchards“ said Alice. “I will be working with over 25 landowners and smallholders to use the cattle to restore the natural meadows which were common throughout the Wyre. The future of much of our cherished wildlife, landscape and cultural assets is dependent on these traditional livestock management skills. It has been my aim for a number of years to work full time in this type of land conservation and management.“ Alice is employed by Wyre Community Land Trust which is based at a working farm on the outskirts of Bewdley and supports land owners, small holders and farmers through training, practical help and the loan of tools and equipment. It provides a wide range of accredited courses available for both land owners and volunteers which are subsidised, many through the Heritage Lottery Funded Grow with Wyre project. These include sustainable orchard management, livestock welfare, fruit pressing and cider making. If you would like to know more please contact John Iles Tel : 01299 488083 Mobile : 07711 795118
Mother’s Day Cards 2nd Bewdley Brownies with their Mother's Day cards and flower arrangements
What has St Anne’s ever done for us? It’s a fair question. It sits in the middle of Bewdley – a large traffic island – occupying precious space that could be used for parking or something equally useful. It obviously does worship but what does it do for those parts of Bewdley that rarely or never come along on Sundays? Here are five answers that come to mind: 1. The Bridge. It began as a church publication but it is now the community magazine for Bewdley. The editorial team is independent but its finances are underwritten by St Anne’s Church and its building is used as a main point of distribution. 2. St Anne’s Primary School is a community school that offers education with a Christian ethos. St Anne’s Church offers support through volunteers listening to readers, providing governors, and people who contribute to worship and Religious Education – including me ! 3. Community Transport provides a voluntary run car service for anyone who has no transport available to them. St Anne’s provides office space in one its tower rooms. Many, but by no means all, of the volunteers are connected with St Anne’s Church. 4. Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local and fair terms of trade for workers in the developing world. St Anne’s is a base for Traidcraft, a Fairtrade company at the forefront of this grassroots movement. You can call into St Anne’s and browse the Tradicraft stall and come to the Traidcraft Christmas fair on the first Saturday in November each year. 5. Bells. St Anne’s does have a rather nice set and some extremely friendly bellringers who get a glorious tune out of them. If you are in town when the ringers are in full swing, it’s hard not feel better and happier. (If you wish to know more about bellringing contact Bob Carlyle 01299405179.) I haven’t mentioned St Anne’s as a venue for concerts, exhibitions or as a place where people come to mark milestones on life’s journey. This isn’t the final word and you may have your own ideas as to what it could be doing that would be of practical benefit for the town and its people. If so, then we’d love to hear from you. Rev Keith James
The longest and fairest-ever piece of bunting Sunday Gang at St Anne's Church recently took part in the attempt to break the Guiness Book of Record for the longest and fairest-ever piece of bunting. The current record is 2,696 metres and the Fairtrade target is 4,350 metres (over two and a half miles!). Sunday Gang members helped to decorate the 22 Fairtrade Cotton flags with slogans and pictures supporting West African cotton farmers in their call for trade justice. The Guinness World Record attempt will be on World Fair Trade Day on Saturday 8 May 2011 so look out for a piece from Bewdley at this event!
