The BRIDGE December 2010
Community News
Helping to transform the lives of people in the third world Imagine living in a tin shack in a squatter camp in the blazing heat in the Dominican Republic. The roof leaks when it rains (and it certainly rains a lot!), you have no running water or toilet and you cook on a coal fire. Your bed is on bricks so that when the rats and snakes come in they can’t get to you. You share one outside toilet with dozens of others (and there is no flush!). Hard to imagine? Well that’s what the team from Bewdley Baptist Church witnessed over and over again during their recent two week trip. Now imagine a group of Christians paying for themselves to come to your country and raising money for new houses, schools and churches. Thanks to the vision and drive of Elio and Lena Madonia that is what is happening. Over 20 years ago, when on holiday Elio went for a walk, got lost and found the hidden Dominican Republic. After much heart searching he decided to do something and build a house – this year, thanks to that vision, the 1,000th house will be built. And you can add five schools, five clinics and 10 churches in the nine new villages. The 11 people from Bewdley Baptist worked on the building site for two weeks painting windows, making rebar foundations, mixing concrete… to name a few. The team paid for their own flights and accommodation and raised enough money to build nearly four new houses. They also went to a hospital and gave out toiletries and toys for children and older patients and helped with a number of church services in remote squatter camps. “One of the highlights of the trip has to be the last day on site. After working in the morning, we went to the squatter camp just across the track and visited six families to tell them that they were getting a house.” said David Glenn. “To see the squalor that they have to live in and knowing that we had played a small part in helping to transform their lives was very emotional.” Like to know more about the trip The team with the six families that they call David on 401953 email david.glenn@gmx.com help to rehouse - Elio and Lena on right
Bewdley schools add their support In the last edition of the Bridge, we reported on the £4,000 raised by Bewdley School and Sixth Form School towards a new school in the Dominican Republic. Bewdley Primary has donated just under £200 from their Harvest Festival events. This money will go towards a new school being built that the team from Bewdley also visited. Currently the children are taught in an old house - one classroom being the garage.
Editorial
The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley. It is delivered free monthly to more than 4,600 homes Don’t panic - Margaret is only having one month off! Stepping into the editor’s shoes is a daunting task! What on earth can I write about? Margaret seems to do it so well and so easily - all Martin and I (we look after the design and artwork) have to do is drop her text into place. Well - there is only one thing to write it about this time of year - yes Christmas! As we come up to Christmas, it is almost impossible to avoid the seemingly endless adverts on TV that imply that you have to spend lots of money to ensure you have a happy Christmas. The stores seem to start selling Christmas earlier and earlier and lights may be turned on months in advance of the main event. But putting together the Bridge this month, once again reminds me of the benefit of living in Bewdley. There are so many examples of local people who give up their time to benefit our community. They do so freely and out of the love that they have for others. This is exactly what Christmas is about - God’s love for us. So with a magazine full of Christmas spirit and exciting things to see, even if we have typical December weather, the true spirit of Christmas, despite all the commercial media messages, Bewdley will be as full of personal kindness as it always is.
So, from everyone on the Bridge team, including those who put it through your door - month in and out - we wish you a Happy Christmas. Enjoy the read. David Glenn

Lions Duck Race 1 January 2011 Just a reminder about the Lions Annual Duck Race taking place on New Year’s Day in Bewdley. Hiring a duck costs £2 and registration is a further £1. Registration starts at 10 a.m. Please register early to avoid large queues and to ensure a prompt midday throw-in. As with last year home-made ducks are welcome and eligible for the ‘Best Dressed Duck’ Competition, but will not be registered for the Race on the river unless they are completely bio-degradable. Please try not to make ducks from polystyrene and plastic bottles. The Lions know our environmentally conscious youngsters understand the importance of keeping our river clean. The Wyre Forest Canoe Club manages to rescue most of the yellow plastic ducks. The Lions want as many entries as possible as the more money raised the more funds are available to support good causes. This year a major project has been supporting the Wyre Forest Talking Newspaper in its change to digital format. Come along on New Year’s Day. Enjoy yourselves and help us to help others.

A step forward for St George’s Hall The Trustees of St Georges Hall are working with Bewdley Development Trust and Bewdley Festival to renovate and operate St Georges Hall as a multi use community facility. Funding for the £1.3m redevelopment is being sought from Advantage West Midlands and Communitybuilders who have already given the scheme a vote of confidence by granting £69,000 to Bewdley Development Trust to support the work needed to obtain planning consent. A business plan has been submitted to the funding organisations and their response is expected after planning permission has been obtained in early 2011. Exciting Plans The next stage is for public consultation to take place on these exciting plans which include: Replacing the 1960’s extension with a new modern building.

Come and join us and have fun raising money At our AGM we reviewed our past year, which had been full of fun and fellowship as we raised money for the families of our brave troops past and present. Our Harvest Supper raised a magnificent £1,200. Other events included Presidents fund raising evening with flower arranging demonstration, Cheese and Wine with viewing of Carnival firework display, stalls at various functions and a wonderful Champagne Breakfast. We have also collected goodies to be sent to our troops in Afghanistan in shoe boxes working with the Wyre Forest Friendship Centre and Habberly Women’s Institute In addition to fund raising events we went to Birmingham to a Carol Concert and visited Half Penny Green vineyard. The total amount raised was £2,242.97p plus £466.67 for the Poppy Appeal. We urgently need more members to help in our work. Our meetings are in the Black Boy Hotel Bewdley the first Wednesday in every month starting at 7.30pm (in the winter months) Anyone is welcome to join us just come or if you would like more information phone Hazel 01299 403800 or Anne 01299402204.
A Change of Career Mark and I have always wanted to run a tearoom. Mark was trained as a chef and has worked all over the place, including the QE 2, but his real ambition was the tearoom. It took us a long while to find the right space in Bewdley but eventually we found it, on the corner of Welch gate. It took twelve nerveracking months before we could move in and
Bewdley Footpath Association Most of us are aware that we need to take more regular exercise and one of the best ways of doing this is by walking, especially when we are surrounded by such beautiful countryside. Bewdley Footpath Association is a friendly bunch of people of all levels of fitness who enjoy walking in the Bewdley area. We organise regular walks on the first Sunday of each month throughout the year, starting at 2pm outside the tourist info/museum entrance in Bewdley. All our walks are fairly easy 3 - 5 mile walks. We also meet for meals and other outings. We always welcome newcomers and visitors. Contact us to let us know you are coming (phone Libby 01299 402015) or just turn up on the day. We recommend good footwear and a waterproof. Well behaved dogs are also welcome, but please only one dog per person. Hope to see you soon. Phil Sealey start setting it up, but once we were in we could look around for the right stuff to create a cosy Victorian feel. So now we’ve been here over a year, and we’ve loved every minute. It’s really hard work, of course, but we’ve met people from all over the world as well as our regular locals. So here’s to many more scones, pots of tea and home-baked cakes! Karen and Mark Flello

CARDS FOR GOOD CAUSES – CHRISTMAS 2010 Bewdley shoppers! Buy once and give twice at Bewdley Cards for Good Causes charity Christmas card shop! Cards for Good Causes returns to Bewdley again this autumn. Christmas cards from more the 25 national and local charities, plus other Christmas items. At least 75p from every £1 spent goes directly to the charity concerned. The shop, staffed by local volunteers, will open in
Bewdley Library on Friday 5th November until Saturday 18th December. Opening times:
Monday, Wednesday,Thursday and Friday: 10am to 4.30pm. Saturdays: 10am to 3pm.
Letter from Cassidy. Hi everyone. I just wanted to write and say thank you and hello to everyone who’s been asking after me. Sorry I haven’t been at my mum’s flower shop to say hello in person, but I’m not always very well behaved while I’m there! I’m still as happy and my missing leg isn’t hindering me. I can still run fast when I’ve seen something fun to sniff/roll. For those who don’t know me I’m Cassidy Banks and I’m a Chow Chow puppy. I was born with only one front leg. My Mum calls me the Robin Reliant of the dog world and hopes Jeremy Clarkson doesn’t come anywhere near me! So I’ll say bye for now and will keep you posted on my antics.
Work’s fine - but I have a dodgy pastime. Been in Bewdley long enough for grandchildren to arrive, but there’s always something to notice and enjoy, even after all these years. Past example - Royal Hotel’s trace fades; Anchor Inn’s double trace emerges. Christmas approaches. Memories of splendid open fires? I only recently registered the fascinating number and variety of the coal holes (?) opening into cellars, all along Upper Street. Take a look. Mundane, but all different - in
size, construction, condition. Domestic history. Just another, easily overlooked, facet of how Bewdley is such a visual delight. And to motorists, who muttered at someone dodging hastily back to the pavement from a crouched camera vantagepoint right in the middle of Upper Street, as if photographing a coal hole – “Sorry!”. Work resumes in the New Year. Happy Christmas. Al Curmist.

The AGM was well attended and the president Beryl Bubb, was very pleased to welcome members and 4 visitors. The secretary Margaret Dalton reported on a successful and happy year with many social and craft events The treasurer Liz Fielding presented clear and detailed accounts which showed a healthy profit. Beryl thanked all officers committee members and the Institute for their hard work and support. The W.I.A Pauline Briggs spoke about Denman College and also the welcome increase in membership in Worcestershire. She was presented with a flower arrangement. After tea Audrey Hobbs gave a very interesting and informative talk on the history of quilting and patchwork. The wonderful display of her quilts, bags and other items were much admired. There will be no meeting in December due to the Christmas lunch. The next meeting will be on January 10th 2011 at 2 pm at Riverside Church Bewdley when Heather Flack will talk on Bewdley Long Ago. All are welcome.

Community News
2010 has been a busy year, seeing substantial changes at the Wyre Forest.
Black – the body is dark chocolate to black and there is no white rump
The big building project to create the new Community Discovery Centre is finished and has given us a delightful (and amazingly tranquil!) base for forest exploration and learning. Since early summer it has been used extensively for school visits, training courses and open days.
White – the body is cream coloured. This is the rarest of the colours and a lovely sight to see.
There will be many more events in 2011 which will be publicised locally in these articles, posters and websites. If you would like to find out when the next open day is, or enquire about hiring the building, please ring 01299 266929. Meanwhile, visitors can get away from people and buildings quite quickly by heading off down one of the three waymarked trails into the quiet surroundings of the forest. The Wyre Forest was hailed as “the most tranquil place in the West Midlands” in early 2007 by the Campaign for Rural England, and this season is the quietest time of all to visit it. My personal recommendation is to follow the Woodland (Red) Trail to find the rare Whitty Pear and the arboretum. Or take the Buttonoak road (B4194) out of Bewdley, parking on the left just out of Buttonoak to explore Earnwood Copse, where you will have a better chance of seeing fallow deer. They will have moulted into their thicker winter coats and there are 4 different colour varieties in Wyre:
Christmas is coming! There are carols in the Visitor Centre on 19th December from 2.30pm to 3.30pm – just a plain and simple celebration of Christmas. (Last year it snowed!) On the other hand you may need to escape from the worst excesses of Christmas selling by getting away to the woods for some of the aforementioned tranquillity! There are Health Walks every Tuesday and Sunday, meeting at the Visitor Centre at 10.30 for a 11am start. The walks are free, led by trained leaders, and are especially for those who wish to improve their fitness – perhaps after illness. They are very sociable occasions too and have a large following. Forest Friends meet at 10am each Thursday in term time for an hour of forest activities for pre-school children and their carers. Meet at the Visitor Centre. £2 per child. Don’t forget that the forest is open every day and the Visitor Centre offers hot food and drinks each day except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. There are special deals available to tempt you during the week.
Common – the body is chestnut with white or cream spots which disappear in winter as the coat darkens Menil – like the common but the spots are retained in winter and the white rump is not edged with black

View from the Redthorne From my window up here in the Redthorne I can just see the far corner of the namesake of this publication. It’s only a glimpse but the bridge is a constant reminder to me of the importance of Bewdley in history and the dilemma of balancing heritage with daily life. I can imagine that as it rose, gleaming and hi-tech from the Severn after its 15th century predecessor was swept away, there would have been many who felt this was (I wince as I write it) a bridge too far. After all, it was the Georgian equivalent of Norman Foster’s Millennium Bridge, being of the latest design and a huge leap into the modern age for the largely Tudor town. But then Bewdley was a very important port; busy, wealthy, outward looking. It was the economic epicentre of an extensive hinterland. A town like that deserved the latest in bridge design by the ultimate bridge designer of his day. Clearly, the great and good of the town wanted Bewdley to be up to the minute. The Redthorne itself was one of many properties built as a Georgian fashion statement. Even many of the wooden framed Tudor houses were concealed behind Georgian facades, as you can learn in the museum, itself once a hub for high-speed food production. My little glimpse of the bridge almost aligns with the site of Telford’s octagonal tollhouse, the victim of a time when architecture such as Bridge House, the medical centre and library was a matter of expedience. When I met the architect of the proposed new library, medical and cultural centre, he said that Wyre Forest DC had requested a “high quality modern” replacement, rather than a neo-Georgian one. I asked how he felt about that and he said he agreed, so long as it was understood that “high quality modern” came at a price. One only has to look at what the project will replace to see what happens if you cut corners. As with Telford’s bridge and Norman Foster’s, the latest design can add to the heritage of a town but only if it is executed with passion and artistry. Bewdley’s heritage is precious but it is a living, breathing place that needs to flex with the times. What we need is not so much to resist the new as to resist the cheap. Neville Farmer
Calling all local artists … make sure that you are part of Bewdley Open Studios 2011 Make sure that you are part of our Bewdley’s major art event next June by enrolling now. Already many artists have signed up and Bewdley Open Studios want as many as possible so that the rich talent in and around our town can be seen and appreciated. Last year nearly 50 artists took the opportunity of displaying, selling and discussing their work at 13 locations. Their range of media on display included paintings, prints, etchings, sculpture, ceramics, stained glass, photography, jewellery, furniture, textiles and garden design. Once again, the museum will act as the hub with many other venues in an around Bewdley. As well as artists, Bewdley Open Studio is keen to hear from people and organizations who would like to their venue to be included in the programme. Like to know more? Christmas Memories I remember the year my gran died just before Christmas. All the family met and, taking a kite each, climbed Clee Hill in the snow to fly them in her memory. Cat Banks and Jo Latimer For some reason, one present from my childhood sticks in my memory. It was a white music box with a pink ballerina on the top. I played with it all day. Kate Wyle We used to come home from Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve and were allowed to open just one present before we went to bed. Tony Before we ate our Christmas breakfast we always went out and gave the horses their special present of carrots. Guy Timmis When I was three I spent Christmas in plaster with a broken leg. I had asked for a rocking horse but got a Scalextric which my dad played with all the holiday. James Rose When I was little, I got an umbrella for Christmas and prayed all day for rain. Angela Pitt
My childhood was spent in the village next to Althorp House. The church choir used to go there on Christmas Eve and the whole Spencer family sat on the Great Staircase while we sang our carols. Then the butler gave us mince pies and coffee. Margaret Ashmore I spent Christmas 1945 under snow and ice in Vienna, just a few months after the end of World War II. I was in the ATS. (now the WRAC) and part of the British Army. Vienna was divided into four zones; American, Russian, French & British, and an interim military government was set up, known as the Allied Commission for Austria. We lived in a former SS barracks and worked in the palace of Schőnbrunn, the favourite summer residence of Maria Theresa. In the forecourt of the palace there is a small theatre, built in 1763, which we were able to use and also outbuildings which housed a unique collection of state carriages. One of these outbuildings was converted into a chapel for the use of the forces, and I remember, with pleasure, singing in the choir at a carol service, that Christmas time. Barbara Crank
Rowing Club As I write we have had a lot of rain and the river is currently too high for safe rowing. Stourport small boats Head race was cancelled due to water levels last weekend, and there is more rain to come. However much we love our sport, safety comes first. When the water is high there are two main concerns;- 1) the speed of the stream, which can make control of the boat harder (if more exciting!?) and although it might be possible to row to Stourport in 10 minutes, it will take a lot more effort to row back again‌ and 2) the debris in the water. Anyone watching the river in flood will notice the twigs, branches and even whole trees that float down at speed. Other interesting items to have been spotted in the river are a hay bale, a garden shed and a wheelie bin!

Bewdley Library "Don't be cross, uncle," said the nephew. "What else can I be," returned the uncle, "when I live in such a world of fools as this?" From 'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens
I've always had some sympathy with Scrooge. My Christmases involve restless nights on camp beds and sofas while others sleep soundly in my bed; laughing off casual insults about my cake because "it's the season of goodwill"; and travelling miles to visit relatives and then having to watch the worst thing television has to offer when disaster is imminent for the A & E staff at Holby City Hospital on the other side. However… There's plenty of Christmas spirit in the library. We have our Cards for Good Causes ladies with us, and a selection of books to help with preparations for the big day – from making table decorations and roasting turkeys to planning parties. We'll have them out on display this month. If it can all get too much for you, there's always the New Books; you could take out a completely unrelated book to escape into!

Easthams Rockhouse Christmas 1946 Shortly before Christmas, my father searched the woods for a Yew bough which was decorated with hand-made paper lanterns. Oddments of cotton wool were pushed between the branches. Early Christmas Eve we visited Easthams farm and sang carols by the light of our hurricane lamp. Our landlord Mr. Edward Rheade invited us inside where we spent a pleasant evening with father reciting funny monologues and mother singing in her fine soprano voice. My favourite song was the “Mistletoe Bough” written by Thomas Haynes Bayley. I recall sipping punch ladled into glass cups the like I had never seen before. Returning home I had hung one of my father’s.... stockings from the bedrail and next morning I found nuts, and orange, apple, a sugar mouse, and a bright shining sixpence. At the foot of my bed were a magic painting book and a new hair ribbon also a kaleidoscope from my grandmother. On the floor lay a blue case containing a portable gramophone made by His Masters Voice with Nipper the terrier dog depicted inside the lid also a selection of 78 .m. records. My father had paid a florin – a silver two shilling piece – and two rabbits for it. Melodies spinning from its turntable gave much pleasure instilling within me the beginning of my interest in melody and lyrics which I retain today. Our Christmas dinner of rabbit stew was eaten in silence followed by father entertaining us with his harmonica. After a tea of jelly and blancmange my father left for Franche Village. The voice of the clock mingled with the crackling of firewood while the oil lamps cast a comforting glow. We drank our cocoa and although alone we felt secure. Mission to Peru - Episode 2 In Arequipa most of our time was spent in the church-run San Lucas School. Here we were involved directly with the pupils: in an art project, bible-story telling, football and general play. We also spent time in two homes run by the church for children who had been abandoned by their parent(s). One little girl had just arrived having been sold by her mother in a restaurant! From Arequipa we travelled up into the Andes (14,000ft) to the Colca Canyon area. The mission here is new and the priest (on his own) is reaching out through healthcare initiatives to the isolated communities in the mountains – involving him in walking 6 hours each way just to reach a village! Whilst in this area we were fortunate to watch 12 condors soaring on the thermals above the canyon. From Arequipa we travelled to Lima, and I tell you about this next month. Lyn Fox

Tails of a Veterinary Practice – life at Riverside Vets as seen by Gavin the practice cat So, Christmas is on the way again and I must say I am looking forward to a little bit of turkey as a treat. I’m sure one of my humans will provide some instead of a few of my biscuits for me. I always make sure they don’t give me both as I’m quite concerned about my waistline and I don’t want to put on extra weight because of having a treat over the festive season. I was talking to my friend Harvey the pointer the other day and he was telling me that chocolate is poisonous to dogs. Apparently most dogs don’t realise this and sometimes they steal the human’s chocolates and it makes them unwell. Personally, I can’t understand why dogs do things like that – I would much prefer a bit of turkey as long as there aren’t any bones in it that could hurt me. I did hear of a cat once though who got a tinsel star stuck in the back of its throat; the vet had to remove it under anaesthetic. It just goes to show it’s important to think about your Christmas celebrations and make sure that your pets are safe while the humans are enjoying themselves. It doesn’t take long and that way we can all enjoy Christmas with our humans safely. Wishing you all a very happy Christmas Gavin

It’s getting close to that time of the year again. Riding into our lives comes that wonderous event, Christmas. Now Christmas immediately conjures up that staple favourite Mulled Wine. Yet there is a lot more to the grape than just the warming cinnamoned liquid. The Christmas meal is normally a white meat with occasionaly red meat as an added attraction. White meat tends to lead us to white wine and there are some amazing whites available. Prosecco This fine, fruity Italian wine reveals hints of apples and pineapples. Prosecco is not a classical wine, but I find it gentler and easier to drink than most sparkling wine. Riesling This fine German wine originates in Rhein and Mosel river valleys. I find this wine to be easy on the palate with gorgeous aromas of fruit. Chardonnay. This classic wine boasts an impressive range of flavours of citrus fruits leaving a sumptuous taste on the palate. Yet you don’t have to serve whites why not try a superb alternative.
Community News Rose Rose wines have become more and more popular and are not an expensive alternative. They have a flavour all of their own and worth a try at anytime. Now we come to Reds and I am only going to recommend two. Sangiovese This classic Italian wine grape variety whose name derives from the Latin sanguis Jovis, "the blood of Jove". I adore the bitter cherry, plum and mulberry fruits with just a touch of vanilla oak. Shiraz (Syrah) I am going to recommend something gloriously special but, it may shock some of you. Sparkling Red. Sparkling Shiraz is, in my opinion, one of the great innovations of modern wine making. The taste of this exquisite nectar sends angels dancing around the tongue. Believe me, this is a magic wine for a magic occasion. Next month as the New Year approaches I will bring some of the delights of the New World wine to the magazine. Steve Conway

Winter in the Garden
Community News
Most of us will be retiring to the warmth of the house as the really cold weather sets in. However it’s important to remember the useful and decorative work the many inhabitants of gardens undertake during the year and their struggle to survive in the winter months. Fish ponds should be checked daily to ensure the water has not frozen. If it has, place a saucepan of hot water on the surface to melt the ice and maintain an air hole. Don’t smash the ice or pour boiling water into the pond as this can shock and kill fish. Hedgehogs hibernate between November and mid to late March so you can help by leaving piles of leaves as these are perfect places for their nests, also be careful when turning over the compost heap as this is a natural, warm blanket for frogs, toads and newts. They are also partial to piles of leaves, abandoned plant pots and stones. Garden birds also suffer during the winter months when food and water sources dry up. Leave out food like stale cake, moist breadcrumbs, seeds, sultanas, biscuits, cooked rice and bacon rind for them to eat; you could even find a recipe to make your own brand of fat balls for consumption, but like all other creatures they always need fresh water. Squirrels are always thankful for unsweetened or unsalted nuts over winter, hazelnuts, walnuts, and almonds are favourites, other additions are chopped apple, carrots, spinach or green beans. All the nooks and crannies around the garden are havens for a variety of hibernating insect life. Under the bark of logs, cracks in window and doorframes are lacewings, wasps and ladybirds. Leaf litter and holes in the ground may shelter bumblebees. To help insects in winter, bamboo makes an excellent home for hibernation, tie up the shortened stems into clumps and leave them in the garden in a dry area do the same with sunflower stems. The welfare of wildlife during winter is a concern but their presence in our gardens is a necessity and a pleasure. Bewdley and District Horticultural Society wish you a Merry Christmas and happy gardening next year.

We did it again. A huge thank you to all you lovely people out there who supported the Traidcraft Christmas Fair. We sold £3,500 of wonderful Fairtrade goodies on the day, which means people like John, a stone worker in Kenya who carves the beautiful Madonna and Child from kisii stone, can buy food for his family and send his children to school. Estela, a glass cleaner in Bolivia involved in the production of the recycled glasses range, now has the security of regular work and a weekly wage. We sold a few more of the delightful animal tape measure range. These are made in Vietnam and since we started selling them in 2007 Traidcraft has sold over 60,000 – enough to go round the warehouse up in Gateshead 300 times! Le Thi Tien, a ceramics worker in Vietnam with Craft Link says “Thanks to working here I have a stable job with a stable income. I am happy with the work. I have money for my son’s education.” Just a few of the thousands of stories Traidcraft could tell of lives dignified by regular work and a chance to provide their families with the important things – food, education, clean water, housing and health care. It’s great fun but quite an undertaking to transform a place of worship into a department store and restaurant for the day. How do we do it? A team of helpers arrives on the Thursday to do the heavy lifting, moving the “shop counters” into place and
Bewdley Townswomen's Guild The speaker at the October meeting was Mrs Madeline Goold author of 'Mr Langshaw's Square Piano'. She gave an interesting talk about her research into an old square piano she had purchased, which led her to trace its history from the early 18th century to the present day and to write her book. The walking group have
putting all the heavy boxes of stock into roughly the right place. The next day a new team of helpers arrives and sets to work beavering away to display all the stock attractively and make sure it’s all priced and labelled. Meanwhile others have been labouring in their kitchens producing cakes, soups, quiches, salads etc for the refreshments. On the Saturday, yet another team of helpers arrives to serve the food and drinks, sell the Traidcraft and restock Christmas cards and food items. The place hums with shoppers, friends meet for lunch, and the day passes in a flash. Then at four o’clock a minor miracle occurs. Yet more helpers arrive and everything is cleared away in less than two hours, leaving the church ready for worship again. On the following Monday all the stock has to be got out again and sorted out, but that’s another story. I love it – it’s so satisfying and heart warming to see so many people really care about the plight of folk in the developing world. It’s marvellous that so many of our congregation turn up to help with all the jobs. It’s a great team effort and lots of fun. Thank you to everyone and roll on next year! After A-levels, is university the only worthwhile path to take? At the moment I’m in my final year of A-levels, possibly education altogether, and would like to make clear that going to university isn’t the ‘be all and end all’ for everyone. It appears that the attitude of some teachers at my school, for example, is that if you don’t go to university you are “writing off the possibilities of a good future or employment”. They also appear to be very interested in figures and statistics about how many students apply to university - I will be one of the few students in my year that will not be. With the cap raised on tuition fees recently, I am even more determined to find myself a job, with prospects, which potentially could give me the funding for university should I decide to go in later years rather than saddle myself with a huge financial debt which I would possibly be paying off for the rest of my life! TOWN COUNCIL NEWS
Community News
TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 1ST NOVEMBER 2010 Pot holes The Mayor and Council welcomed Councillor Mrs Liz Davies to the meeting following her bad fall caused by a pothole in the Load Street Car Park. The Mayor encouraged members of the public to report pot holes which they felt were dangerous to the Worcestershire Hub which coordinated all such matters. This can be done preferably on-line at www.whub.org.uk or by calling the contact centre on 01905 765765. Anyone reporting a problem should be given a reference number which can then be followed up if the work is not done reasonably promptly. Welch Gate The Council had been informed that some further progress was being made by the County Council as to traffic management options that might help to improve this longstanding problem which gives rise to high levels of air pollution. Saturday Market – Severnside South Councillors expressed concern at the small number of stalls that were trading at the regular Saturday Market (not to be confused with the Continental Market) and resolved that some discussion should take place with Bewdley Development Trust who operate the market to put forward suggestions as to how it could be improved Town Council Budget The Budget Working Group is in the process of drawing up next year’s budget. As regular readers will know the Town Council’s budget is not that large when compared with those of the County and District Councils. However, it tries to spend your money carefully. At present the “precept” which is the amount levied on an average Band D household is £21.52 for the year. If local residents have any suggestions for small scale spending which could help to improve the town please get in contact (preferably in writing) with one of your Town Councillors or with the Town Clerk at the Guildhall War Memorials Following on from last month’s note, the War Memorials were indeed cleaned in time for the Remembrance Day and Remembrance Sunday and looked much smarter for these important events in the town’s civic calendar. Hopefully they will not require such thorough cleaning for a few more years. Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall are: on Mondays (except where indicated) at 7.30pm are: 6th December, 4th January (Tuesday), 7th February, 7th March and 4th April. Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. They are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk. TOWN COUNCIL NEWS IS PRODUCED AND PUBLISHED BY BEWDLEY TOWN COUNCIL

Community News community, and drivers now almost fall over themselves to show us their licences and permits when we speak to them. Unlocked cars Dear readers, You may recall from my article in the November Bridge that we whilst we have resources locally in terms of officers and equipment we will be targeting specific issues around Bewdley and surrounding rural parishes that are the cause of persistent complaint. Speed Enforcement Throughout November we have been conducting speed enforcement on those roads where there is a measured rather than a perceived problem of speeding. We are using a hand-held radar device and change locations frequently, so offending motorists are unlikely to be aware of our presence until they are pulled over further up the road. It is disappointing but not surprising that every one of those issued with fixed penalty notices or cautions so far lives in Bewdley. Scrap collectors Our well publicised initiatives to ensure that scrap collectors and waste carriers are operating legally have resulted in a noticeable reduction in their activity locally.
Throughout October and November we have dealt with a number of suspicious incidents where someone has attempted to gain access to unattended vehicles, often successfully. They are targeting cars on driveways and parked at the roadside, usually during late evenings. These incidents have been sporadic; however the significant factor common to all of them is that in every case the cars have been left unlocked! Lock it up As we approach Christmas and stock up on food, drink and expensive gifts to see us through the festive season, the temptations and opportunities open to thieves increase exponentially. Most insurance companies will not compensate any claim of theft from an insecure house or vehicle, but will record it as a risk, so next year your premiums go up! Use some common sense; to quote a phrase –“Lock it or lose it!” I will close by offering our very best wishes to you all for a safe, secure and peaceful Christmas and New Year, from everyone at Bewdley Police Station.
Our focus will now move closer to the West Midlands where the main scrap dealers are based.

From 1st Wribbenhall Rainbows in their own words We are the youngest members of the Girl guiding family. Our motto is ‘No-one gets left out’ and we’ve tried not to be left out of the Centenary Year! The Launch Party was a perfect fun start to our celebrations with yummy food, games, a magician and a party bag too. Our meetings are only an hour long but we packed them full of activities to complete the Adventure 100 Challenge. We compared different aspects of life in 1910 with today, looked at water science and performed Goldilocks and the Three Bears ‘in the spotlight’. We joined in all District events including Fun Swim, St. George’s day Parade, Jamboree on the Trail and Carnival. We were day visitors at the Best 100 Camp; Ellie wrote, ‘I liked sitting around the camp fire because we sag (sang) nice sogs’ (songs). Millie: ‘I engudet (enjoyed it). It was scary wean (when) the sucas (circus) man gugled (juggled) with fire’. With Rainbows from the Midlands Region we ‘went wild’ at Twycross Zoo and we were on show at Stagestruck! The highlight of the year? Centenary Promise Ceremony in Jubilee Gardens. “I’m going to remember this forever” Thank you, Lord Baden Powell, for all our memories and here’s to the next 100 years. Carol-ann Muller-Jones
Promise renewal On the evening of 20th October the church bells were ringing as approximately 75 members of Bewdley Girl Guiding walked through Bewdley to Jubilee Gardens to renew their promises to mark the end of our centenary year. With lanterns and glow sticks lighting us up, we walked the candle lit path into the gardens, where there was a big screen counting down to Guiding members all over the UK to renew their promises at 20:10 on 20.10.2010! Gill Robinson, our publicity guru, was presented with her 10 year service badge and all present received a commemorative promise badge. We left Jubilee Gardens all singing Go well and safely... Our Bewdley celebrations would not have gone so well without the help from people who aren’t usually involved with Guiding. The Bridge editors for printing our reports and photographs Gary Mayner, always there to photograph our celebrations. St. Anne’s bell ringers for undertaking a quarter peel in our honour. The Police Community Support officers who helped us cross the road safely. Bewdley Floral Art club for their generous donation from the proceeds of their annual fund raising. School children enjoying a tasty meal! Key Stage 1 children at Bewdley Primary School took part in a whole week of Diwali festival activities as part of their Celebrations topic. They created Diva Lamps, Diwali cards, created Indian dance and wrapped up the whole celebration with their very own Indian meal. Jacqui Bennett, KS1 teacher said "We had a fantastic weekend and all the children thoroughly enjoyed learning about another culture. It was great fun tasting all the different and varied Indian food that we had made and we would like to say a huge thank you to The Rajah restaurant in Bewdley for providing some of the wonderful food. It really made our week."
