New CSO on the Bewdley beat
Bewdley has a new Community Support Officer on the beat following the arrival of Nicholla Fice, who has joined the Local Policing Team for the town. Nicholla has completed seven weeks initial training at West Mercia Police’s headquarters at Hindlip and replaces CSO Hollie Tipper who recently left the team at Bewdley. She is originally from Dudley but moved to Wolverley about four years ago to live with her partner and has built up a good knowledge of Bewdley during her time in the district. She said she had joined the police as she enjoyed a challenging role and would get satisfaction from a job that involved helping people. “I am really lucky being based at Bewdley because it is a lovely town with some smashing people,” she said. “I hope to become a valuable member of the Local Policing Team and that people will feel they can approach me if they have got any concerns.” She has already been involved in issuing crime prevention advice and providing reassurance to residents following several burglaries in the Hill Farm area of Bewdley. In her spare time Nicholla enjoys horse riding and helping out on the farm at Bodenham Arboretum, Wolverley, which is managed by her partner. Editor : Margaret Ashmore

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley. It is delivered free monthly to more than 4,600 homes
You may have heard me mention next door’s hens before in this space. Well, I found Florence, an elegant Maran hen, pacing anxiously round my brassicas the other day, and while wondering how on earth she’d climbed the eight-foot fence between her hen-run and aforesaid brassicas, I heard a knock on the door. “Can I have my hen back, please?” Nigel politely asked. Florence didn’t give in easily. She whizzed three times round the vegetable garden before diving in the open back door to check out my soft furnishings. After a short struggle, Nigel emerged triumphant, with Florence clasped to his chest. We both quite enjoyed the chase, but I can’t help hoping none of her friends feel like copying her holiday plans. Florence isn’t the only one to have come to the end of her holiday. Now that winter’s here, most of the visitors to our town have packed up and gone and Bewdley goes back to its winter activities. We can look back on another highly successful Festival last month, and a glance at our “What’s On” page reveals numerous organisations and events there to give us plenty of alternatives to an evening in front of the telly. Each month, as the reports and notifications of events come in, I marvel at the energy of the volunteers who keep our town going. Behind every club and event can be found people giving time and energy to making it happen. I’ve spoken before about these unsung heroes; winter is when they are at their busiest. Of course, that applies to our community magazine as well. Staffed by volunteers (I am merely the nosey one but the others put in many hours of their time each month), and delivered by our faithful helpers, we rely on all our readers to supply the news and articles that appear each month. If nothing ever happened in Bewdley, there’d be no magazine! So if you have a tale to tell, an event to publicise or a photo you would like others to see, send it in. The addresses and contact details are below; go on, people love to read about what we’re all doing. Florence may need to spread her wings to see what’s over the fence, but I can get to see Bewdley here at my computer! Margaret Ashmore

Writers
Bewdley Writers Guild is a fledgling venture, which is hoping to attract members from the area. The Bewdley aspect of the guild is that the membership should come from the Bewdley area. The subject matter of work can be far ranging. It is proposed that, if you are a poet, lyricist or short story writer, the guild should meet on a regular basis to discuss each other’s work, swap ideas and organise competitions. Hopefully we will be able to get some of the best works into print. If you are a keen writer and of a like mind, please contact Tony: 07969827037 or Bewdleywritersguild@hotmail.co.uk

get really active
You move to a new area and you have a new job to settle in to, a new home to find and perhaps schools to sort out for the kids. Once the initial hard work is over, you then start to think about how to meet people and build a social circle. Or perhaps you have been in the area for a long time but would like to expand your horizons? If you’re interested in coming along to a couple of evenings so see if you like it, give one of us a ring. If you like, we can even arrange for a couple of us to meet you in a pub for an informal chat. We are a relaxed bunch and welcome all sorts - just as long as you enjoy social occasions and would like to be able to put something back in to the community a couple of times a year. We look forward to hearing from you.

Young Ambassadors As part of the School Sport Partnership, each year two students from the Wyre Forest are appointed as Young Sporting Ambassadors. This year, two students from year 10 from the Bewdley School and Sixth Form centre were chosen. Helen Watson and Luke Mundie attended a conference at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry to meet past Olympic and Paralympics and learn more about their role as Young Ambassadors. Throughout the year they will be promoting sport and the Olympic and Paralympics values in schools in the Wyre Forest. Ellie Hooper Bewdley Development Trust CIC
Sylvia does it again
Yet another successful ‘Sylvia’s Lunch’. Any who have not experienced one, really should make sure they book for next year. She always arranges beautiful weather and, together with her stalwart band of helpers, provides superb food – the puds are ‘to die for’.
This year we had a change of venue thanks to Joyce and Tony Redstall. Some 60 diners enjoyed not only their beautiful garden (I always wanted to know what was behind that high brick wall) and the food, but excellent and friendly company. Whilst we were royally entertained Sylvia managed to raise the magnificent sum of £620 for the Children’s Society.
Thank You Sylvia, all of you helpers and all that came.

Bees
The museum is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday until the 20th December this year. However, our thoughts are turning to plans for next year. The Friends of the Museum are working with the Museum and Grow with Wyre to develop a new permanent exhibition focusing on Bees. There has been a great deal of publicity surrounding the threats to the UK bee population and the implications for the environment; we would like to know what the situation is locally. Honey has had a wide range of uses throughout history; we would be interested in memories of its use. If you have any information, artefacts or experience you feel may be useful, we would love to hear from you. jennymrobbins@hotmail.com or call Carol on 01299 400386.

GOLDEN OPPORTUNITIES How Charity Christmas Cards raised more than £75m*
50 years ago, a small group of medical charities met to discuss ways of promoting sales of their cards; from that small beginning 'The 1959 Group of Charities' was formed and by 1964 were selling cards from 10 empty shops in various town centres. In 1966, with sales rising, the Group was registered as a charity (no. 249039). In 1971 the name 'Cards for Good Causes' (CFGC) was first mooted and by 1988 formally established as the trading arm of the 1959 Group. Today CFGC is the largest multi-charity Christmas Card organisation in the UK with around 350 temporary shops. In the past 5 years, charities have received over £20m from sales through CFGC, representing at least 75p in every single pound. Sales begin on Thursday 5 November and we plan to celebrate the Golden Week, 16-21 Nov. We hope all our loyal supporters and volunteers will visit our shop in Bewdley Library and keep the funds coming in. We are open 10.00-4.30 M/W/Th/F and 9.30-12.30 Sat - library closed Tuesday. [Baxter Church, Kidderminster is also open daily for CFGC] Diana Hickson/Susan Price * from this charities had to pay for the production & distribution of their cards and any VAT

THANK YOU FOR RAISING OVER £1,000
At our Harvest Supper we raised over £1,000, which will be sent to the families of our gallant service personel. It was a very happy occasion with 93 people sitting down together, enjoying the company, meal and entertainment provided by Al Boden. We are particularly grateful to the traders of Bewdley and individuals who so generously gave to the raffle. Our sincere thanks to everyone for this magnificent effort.
SHOE BOXES TO AFGANISTAN
We have been able to send 42 boxes to the Troops of the Mercian Regiment and have approximately 20 more to send. Again, this has been due to people’s generosity, particular thanks to the Wyre Forest Friendship Centre and Habberly Women’s Institute. Anne Mace Press Officer

Row to Bristol
Community News
No, it’s not a typing error: - members of Bewdley Rowing Club really are going to row to Bristol! This is planned for November 7th, when several different crews aim to row in boats of 8 rowers down the river and canal to Sharpness. We are raising money for Children in Need and you will see us around town on the evening of Friday November 6th collecting sponsorship for the epic event! If you are awake early enough on the morning of the 7th, you may want to wave us off from the steps of the rowing club. We head for Stourport and the first lock, and then the crew will row to Worcester where it will be relieved by fresh rowers for the second leg. At Upton and Tewkesbury there will again be crew changes and at Gloucester we branch away from the river onto the Sharpness canal for the final part of the journey. So spare a thought that day for the long-distance-rower, and some change the evening before for Children in Need!

November: the start of the gardener’s winter.
Bewdley Horticultural Society
Winter starts as plants reach a state of dormancy and yes, here we are, the mean daily temperature drops to 6 degrees or below towards the end of the month. Good gardening days are few and far between and the biggest task of the month will be clearing and tidying up. Leaves should be collected for composting along with the tops of plants that have been trimmed back, but burn anything showing signs of disease. Attention to garden clearing will pay dividends next growing season by reducing garden diseases. General tasks to be undertaken are as before: lawns should be repaired, turfed where necessary, aerated and given a final autumnal feed. Finish digging beds and borders; winter frosts will help to break down the soil. Fuchsias and geraniums have done their summer work, so it’s now time to lift them to overwinter indoors. Herbaceous plants will need to be cut down to a height of 18 inches above ground level. If the weather relents to a warm spell, it’s not too late to plant out, into their final position, hardy perennials that have been raised from seeds. However, if winter has set in, this is best left to springtime. In the greenhouse, keep glass as clean as possible to take maximum advantage of any light, and ventilate freely on warm days; but stop draughts and keep fog out when cool. Make the most of your gardening days, as the nights are long. Stuart Williams
MENTOR LINK CHARITY BALL
Once again local charity Mentor Link is organising a Charity Ball to raise funds for this much valued organisation on Saturday 7th November at the Ramada Hotel, Bewdley. Bewdley Primary Schools Festival On Friday 18th September 100 pupils, aged eight and nine from the four local Primary Schools of St. Anne's, Bewdley, Far Forest and Upper Arley took part in a Team Building Festival at the Ramada Hotel, Bewdley.
Year 9 and Sixth Form students from the Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre organised and led different activities on the Upper Lawn at the Hotel. The Festival was organised to coincide with a visit from Lord Sebastian Coe, who spent time with the pupils, joining in and signing autographs.
The festival was a huge success and the pupils and staff very much enjoyed meeting and chatting with Lord Coe, raising the awareness of the 2012 Olympic Games and promoting the Olympic values of respect, excellence and friendship.

November in the For est
Autumn has its pluses and minuses. Though I feel sad at the end of the exuberance and warmth of summer and the inevitable die-down of growth as winter approaches, I need to remind myself to enjoy the present. The leaf colours have been wonderful this year, brought on rapidly by the late summer drought and an early frost. The shapes and colours flung so carelessly at our feet are a source of delight and I cannot resist collecting them. I pick up cones too: they might be turned into Christmas decorations or just sit on the windowsill to be admired. The Wyre Forest has Douglas Fir, Scots and Corsican Pine, European Larch, Western Hemlock and both Japanese and Western Red Cedar. See how many you can find! This is the time to enjoy a brisk walk, making the most of the longer views that have opened up in the forest with the loss of the foliage. Perhaps you will be rewarded with a sighting of fallow deer as they search for acorns and beech mast to feed on (it seems to be a poor year for both). Frosty or misty mornings have their own atmosphere, with sparkling ice crystals fringing each stem or dewy cobwebs delicately draping fences, branches and ground. Why not join one of the Health Walks every Tuesday and Sunday starting from the Visitor Centre at 11am? They are free and their aim is to build fitness at a gentle pace. If you haven’t been before, come at 10.30am to allow time to register with the volunteer leader.
“Regulars” have noticed that the pre-advertised re-routing of the easy access (Yellow) route has now been implemented. One walker expressed her disappointment at losing “the nicest part of the route”, and I apologised, but explained that the large numbers of educational visits to the Discovery Centre require areas of the forest, where we can be sure that there is no contamination with dog faeces (there, I’ve said it!). The alternative would be to tell the children not to touch anything! Pre-school children and their carers can meet every term-time Thursday from 10am to 11am for forest-based play and activities with Forest Friends, led by the Discovery Centre’s staff. For more information on any of these please ring 01299 266929.

“What you doing then? “ Thinkin’” “ Oh are, wot about? “All them ducks on the river then” “Well there are a lot of ‘em this year” “I was thinkin’ about what we could do with them. For a start we could make a charge for feedin’em, make a bit of money from the tourists like. We could sell a licence for a pound to feed em, but only corn and that’s another pound a bag.” A “ Why only corn?” B “’S’obvious innit”, you could feed ‘em up an’ make that “Patty’s four grass stuff” and then sell it in one of the shops” A “That’s a good un, and we could sell the feet to the posh cafes where boiled duck’s feet am a delicacy.” B “An’ that’s a good un as well, course we could always use the feathers to make quills for the school kids so they could write like we did with pen and ink, none of this computa stuff or biro things. An then we could use the other feathers to stuff into these quilty things, you know, so you only need make the bed once every couple of weeks.” A “Great idea, we could make loads of money and put Bewdley Duck into all the butchers around here. Now then how many are there?” B “Well loads really but most of them are geese!” Anon The author assures me he’s only kidding! - Ed.
Wribbenhall W.I.
The Institute met on September 14th at 2 pm. The members were concerned about people who were sick and pleased for those now recovering. Mrs. Beryl Bubb informed members of the change of date and venue for the Christmas Lunch, which would now be on Monday December 14th at the Black Boy Wribbenhall. The speaker Mr. R. Richardson talked about his trip to Peru with many interesting slides of the people, their clothes, hats and villages. He also showed slides of the ruined Inca city of Machu Picchu. We marvelled at the effort it took to climb to the site and how he coped with altitude sickness. The October meeting was held on the 12th at Riverside Church, Dog Lane Bewdley, when Mrs. S. Merrill gave a talk entitled “From one pig to another”. Visitors and new members are always welcome.

Cross Country Championships
Did you know that the Wyre Forest Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships takes place in the Wyre Forest? This will take place for the third year running at the Wyre Forest Visitors Centre, Callow Hill on November 20th. Nine local schools will attend the event with over 500 runners taking part in six different races. The Wyre Forest provides an excellent setting and challenging course for the event and the Forestry Commission is great in allowing us to use this local venue. The best runners in the Under 14 and Under 16 races will then go on to represent the Wyre Forest Schools in the County Competition in February 2010. The event is organised by staff at the Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre and for the past two years the school has been successful in winning the team competition. The courses are well marshalled and follow the waymarked routes in the forest ending with a challenging hill up to the Visitors Centre.

Boxes
The House-Boxes collected in over £2,100 this year for the Children’s Society funds, which is a great contribution to the £2.2 million donated through this form of giving, each year. Thank you to everyone who helps the Society in this way, but an even bigger thank you to all who help to collect in the boxes. Unfortunately I have quite a few boxes that are looking for a loving home, where they can collect those fiddling 5p pieces and the pointless 1p ones, too! All Saints' and Wribbenhall Together
As I write this the cold of the British winter seems to have started to flex its muscles with early morning frosts & very chilly winds. These, coupled with the earlier sunset times and later sun rise times, can easily start one’s mind in a depressive downward spiral as the gloom of the winter period is allowed to blanket one’s emotions. But hold on: doom and gloom is a state of mind for many people, one which if the brightness and loveliness of this time of year is reflected on, looked for and experienced can change the whole way one feels. Bright blue sky and lovely sunshine, the various flowers and trees all decked out in their winter glory, the chance to wrap up warm and “kick the leaves”, the opportunity to spend time with others in a warm place all bring their own rays of sunshine into our hearts. For many the meeting with someone else can be difficult. Who to see, where to go and still feel safe & secure. Sometimes it’s easier to sit alone rather than make the effort to meet with & chat to others. But once experienced, chatting over life’s challenges & successes can be one of the

have the noisiest helicopter we could buy.
Dear Readers,
In our dealings with the public it is apparent that most people have no idea of how the modern police service operates. That is not really surprising as the police have never been good at promoting what we actually do. Public perception seems to be based upon fictional TV series, or highly selective and edited programmes about police officers ‘in action’, none of which bare any resemblance to reality. The vast majority of what fills our working shifts is unseen and for many reasons does not enter the public realm.
So how is Bewdley policed? Firstly to dispel a common myth, Bewdley does not have its own police ‘force’ that deals exclusively with everything that happens in Bewdley. That is a very simplistic concept from the ‘Dixon of Dock Green’ era of policing, often viewed through rose-tinted specs as ‘the good old days’ when life was tougher but more straightforward. Today’s officers face far broader, greater and more complex demands than was experienced by our predecessors, necessitating a fluid and flexible style of policing. Most of the officers who patrol the town on Friday and Saturday evenings cover the whole of Wyre Forest. If you are a victim of crime, the officer who deals with you will probably come from Kidderminster or Stourport. They are supported by dog handlers and Road Policing officers from Worcester or Rubery, or by detectives and scenes of crime officers from Kidderminster, Bromsgrove or Redditch, or specialist officers from HQ, to name but a few. You may have noticed that we also
So who is in Bewdley police station? We are your Local Policing Team, probably the closest thing to ‘the good old days’ that you are going to get. We work predominantly in Bewdley and the surrounding rural areas, and our role is essentially community reassurance and long term problem solving. We work in partnership with local people and organisations, and provide advice and support to many others. We are a small team, as you will note from our contact details, recently enhanced by two new Local Response officers, PC’s Tim Macrae and Ash Bloor. Contrary to popular belief and expectations, we each have a home life that we are entitled to, which means that at times there is no one in Bewdley police station. But clearly, as I have outlined above, that does not mean that no one is policing Bewdley.
If you are genuinely interested in how we police, rather than merely seeking a stick to beat us with, drop in to any of our PACT surgeries in the Youth Café for a chat. As my mom often says, “you shouldn’t believe the rubbish they put on the telly!” The next PACT meeting, with local Councillors and other community representatives present, will be at Bewdley Baptist Church, High St., at 6.30 p.m. on Wednesday 18th November.

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 5th OCTOBER 2009
Town Centre Works The Council were advised that contrary to what had been anticipated for more than a year the proposed works to be carried out in Load Street, which would necessitate closure in the New Year, would not be carried out by Balfour Beatty but by a different contractor Enterprise. This decision had been taken by Severn Trent who are coordinating the works and the contract. The Town Clerk is seeking confirmation that the assurances given previously that the works would be carried out in January/February remain in place and that the work will not be delayed. Civic Space After much debate it was agreed that to prevent parking within the Civic Space area on Severnside South, the Town Council would request the County Council to extend and link up the double yellow lines across the York stonework. The Council had previously hoped this could be avoided but none of the other options put forward were as easy to implement or to enforce. Footpath - Dowles Road to River Severn via Greenacres Lane The Council were keen to support the inclusion on the Definitive Footpaths Map of a right of way on foot from Dowles Road to the River Severn along Greenacres Lane. The County Council had spent a lengthy period (13 years!) gathering evidence to show that this right of way existed and should be classed as a public footpath despite opposition from some neighbouring landowners. The Bewdley School & Sixth Form Centre The Planning Committee had an initial look at extensive plans drawn up by the County Council for the redevelopment of the Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre. As this was a major application, it was agreed to invite a representative of the County Council to talk through the details at a future meeting before submitting comments. Wribbenhall Millennium Green Trust AGM The date for the Annual General Meeting of the Trust has been fixed for Monday 9th November at 7.00pm in The Guildhall. All members of the public are welcome to attend.
Future Town Council meetings are: 2 November, 30 November 2009 and 4 January, 1 February, 1 March and 6 April 2010 Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall and Load Street Car Park, in the Library and the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk.and on the My Parish page of www.worcestershire.gov.uk TOWN COUNCIL NEWS IS PRODUCED AND PUBLISHED BY BEWDLEY TOWN COUNCIL

ACCOUNTANTS
ELDERLY TAX PAYERS
You may be entitled to a tax refund. H M Revenue have recently written to tax payers who received a repayment in previous years, advising them that they are no longer required to complete a tax return. This is misleading, as tax repayments will be lost if no return is submitted. We have successfully secured repayments for clients who erroneously believed that their affairs were correct. If you have received tax repayments before, speak to Nigel or Tim, who will advise you free of charge, whether a submission would prove beneficial.

100 and still going strong
We have been going for 100 years and our Centenary celebration year has just begun! With 10 million members worldwide, we are the biggest organisation for girls and young women in the world. The celebrations continue to 20.10.2010 when all members of Bewdley Girl Guiding will be renewing their promises in the centre of Bewdley. We held Bewdley District's Launch Party on the 17th October, and throughout this very special milestone year, we will be holding an event a month, so keep reading the Bridge for updates! During our centenary year, all Rainbows, Brownies and Guides throughout the world will be taking part in a number of challenges, as part of Adventure 100 in order to score points adding up to 100. On September 24th, 2nd Bewdley Brownies completed their first Adventure 100 challenge, ‘Look up High’ by climbing to the top of St Anne’s Church and seeing how the bells are rung. At the top, the Brownies had fun trying to get people to notice them by shouting hello. As part of the Discover Bewdley weekend, we will be opening the Old Grammar School on High Street with a Girl Guiding exhibition. If anyone has any old photographs or uniforms they would be willing to donate, please get in touch with our District Commissioner, Brenda Goode on 01299 402676. Gill Robinson 2nd Bewdley Brownies
