Editorial

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley. It is delivered free monthly to more than 4,600 homes I went to a funeral last month. The person had been a very quiet and private lady. However, St Anne’s Church was filled to capacity for the service. Afterwards someone remarked, “I wish I’d known all that about her earlier”. It turned out that Ann Hyslop, for that is who it was, had done many things for Bewdley, all of them quietly and unremarked. It made me think that I should be on the lookout to notice other people who, like Ann, make this town a good place to live. I shall start by leafing through the magazine where, for each event publicised, someone – or three – is beavering away to make sure the event happens. For instance, we’ve been treated to news throughout this year of the celebrations as Guiding reached its hundredth birthday. Think of all those evenings given up to maintaining our brownie, guide and scout packs. This month the Bewdley Festival and its Fringe will bring in many people from outside the town as well as giving us locals a feast of events. It takes a tremendous amount of work throughout the year to ensure its success. And so I could go on. Out of interest I counted up the events in last month’s Bridge and made it twenty six, and that’s not counting the church activities. That’s an awful lot of unpaid service to the community. (I might write and tell David Cameron how well Bewdley is doing in his Big Society). So let’s all say a collective “thank you” to them all and give them our support. Margaret Ashmore

Bewdley raises funds for three houses for Haitians refugees The party of 11 people who are going to the Dominican Republic this month has raised over £7,000 - enough funds to build three new houses for homeless Haitian refugees. They are setting off in mid-October and, instead of sunning themselves on the beaches, they will be working on a building site. In total over a 10 week period nearly 100 people from throughout the UK will be working on the site, with the aim to build 40 new homes. Team members pay for their own flights and accommodation, with every single penny raised going direct to building the new homes. Promises Auction Thanks to the tremendous support of many local shops, organisations and individuals, the recent Promises Auction raised nearly £1,600. R & B Concert - 2nd October Come along and support the Bewdley team at their last fund raising event - details inside front cover of this issue of The Bridge. Like to know more? If you would like to see the work that the team will be doing, check out their website www.bewdley.webs.com or chat to David Glenn (401953).

Don’t turn over swiftly because you’ve seen the word Christmas! Yes, it’s that time of year again when all kinds of Christmas events are promoted, and Traidcraft is no exception. Saturday, 6th November sees the Traidcraft Christmas Fair in St Anne’s Church, from 10am to 4pm and we’d love to see as many of you there as possible. Gifts are at the heart of Christmas. Christians celebrate God’s gift of Jesus to the world and we all enjoy the gift of time to catch up with families and friends and to celebrate at the darkest time of the year. Let’s extend our gift sharing to millions in the developing world, who are materially so much poorer than we are. We all like to give gifts to loved ones at Christmas and, if we choose from the fabulous collection of unique, handcrafted, fairtrade gifts offered by Traidcraft, our gifts mean that Constantina in Peru, Pushpa in India, Indika in Sri Lanka and Estela in Bolivia and so many more have the chance of a better life. Read a little of their stories in the new Traidcraft catalogue, available in St Anne’s now. At the Christmas Fair we’ll have gifts for all ages as well as festive food treats, Christmas cards, wrap and other seasonal essentials. Home baked cakes will be served all day with light lunches as well. So mark the date in your diary now - 6th November - and take the strain out of Christmas shopping. Your support really does make a huge difference to so many lives. Thank you. Elaine Barbour 400617 barboursbewdley@btopenworld.com

Bewdley Festival Toasts Traders The Bewdley Festival, now in its 23rd year, has become an established part of the national festival scene and is a highlight in the Worcestershire arts calendar offering a host of exciting and valued artists every October. This year the ‘Eat Bewdley’ raffle offers over sixty ‘food’ prizes donated in support of the Festival by local shops, tea rooms, pubs, hotels, the railway and a garden centre. Bewdley Festival Organisers wish to place on record a big thank you to all of the local Traders and Businesses who have so generously donated prizes for this year’s raffle particularly in view of the current difficult economic climate. The ‘Eat Bewdley’ raffle is an important fund raiser which enables the Festival to continue to bring famous names to Bewdley. Tickets are now on sale and winners will be notified after the draw on 18th October 2010

Bewdley Local Tradesmen Making Sparks – The Electrician I didn’t want to be an electrician at school. I always wanted to be a vet, but the careers master at my school told me I would never make it, so instead I went to college to study electronics and electrics. I became a safety officer and travelled the world. I’ve spent quite a lot of time in the Far East and learned to speak some Chinese, though I think I’ve forgotten most of it by now. Although it sounds exciting and glamorous, I became rather tired of all those hotel rooms and travel, particularly my last job in this field when I was spending four hours on the motorway every day, so I took the rather scary step of giving it all up. For the next year I examined my options, moved to Bewdley and did the necessary training to get my Part P, which is the very stringent qualification to do domestic and commercial electrics. Now I do far less travel, have formed some very good friends, and am poorer but happier. I don’t regret my career change for a moment. What don’t I like? Getting filthy in lofts and under floorboards! It’s surprising to customers that a lot of wiring is found in those places. What do I like? Meeting people, doing a good job that will keep people safe, and of course, all those cups of tea! Paul

New Pond in the Garden We filled our new pond up in June and started to see lots of dragonflies. We watched carefully and saw them mating and then the female laying eggs under the lily. When we came back from holidays we thought that we could see dragonfly larvae at the bottom of the pond. On 24th August I saw the most amazing sight of a dragonfly emerging with pale, crinkly, papery wings. Unfortunately deer had eaten the tall plants while we were away so it was climbing up the stones, creeping plants and moss, opening its wings so that it could dry them ready to fly. The weather turned horrible and it was getting battered and wet so we made a little shelter round the iris so that it could stay dry from the rain and climb up when it was ready. The next day it was still safe and alive and it had climbed further up the iris. It had got darker in colour and now was more clearly a dragonfly but we are not quite sure which species. The following day it disappeared: hopefully it flew off to complete its life cycle and impress others with its flight patterns. It was amazing to see how nature transformed the larva to the adult. Marcus Smith (aged 12)

Bewdley Library There's a reassuring rhythm to our working year in the library, and October brings the Bewdley Festival. As part of the Festival we have an art exhibition in our gallery. This town has always supported its young people and we are very excited that this year's exhibition will be work by students at The Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre, inspired by the theme 'Identity'. Come along and have a look at how much new talent Bewdley has! After you've enjoyed the artwork, why not look at our range of books covering the subject of art, from 'how to' books to ones covering specific artists; useful for anyone with artistic leanings or studying aspects of the subject at school/college. These books are usually expensive to buy, so come along and take one out free of charge! The exhibition will be with us from 4th October until the end of the month. We have a late night opening on Monday evenings until 7 pm, and - it's always worth repeating – please remember that we are closed on Tuesdays!

Community News Bewdley District Girlguiding

Even been a girl guide? - then we want to see you. Last October Bewdley’s celebrations for 100 years of Girl Guiding worldwide were launched with a party in St. George’s Hall. Our plans to do something each month for the centenary year have been successful and every Rainbow, Brownie, Guide and Leader has taken part in most of these events, so hopefully in years to come there will be a memory or two from what has been a fantastic year. Before Stagestruck in October our own closing ceremony in Bewdley will be held in Jubilee Gardens. We have permission to go into the gardens in the evening of Wednesday 20th October when we shall gather to take part in our Vision event when, nationally, members will assemble at venues around the country at 20.10 on 20.10.2010 to renew their Guiding promise. Everybody who has ever been a member of this extraordinary movement for girls is invited to join us at 8 pm. Guiding in Bewdley started in 1924 so there must be quite a few women out there. Please come if you can, if not set aside a few moments at that time to think of Girlguiding Worldwide

We need your memories! I know we don’t really want to think about Christmas yet, but here at the Bridge we are already planning our special Christmas edition. We are hoping to devote a page to our readers’ Christmas memories, good or bad, happy or sad. Can any of our senior citizens write and tell us about their childhood memories? Can our youngest Bewdley people tell us about a particularly exciting Christmas? Perhaps you spent a Christmas abroad. Did you have a white Christmas, or perhaps a tropical one? Do put pen to paper or finger to keyboard and tell us, and we’ll print a selection of the best. I might even tell you how I sang Christmas carols to Princess Diana when she was a baby. Margaret Ashmore

Can you help? Do you recognise this family, possibly taken before the man in uniform went off to war? One of a large collection of photographs held by Bewdley Museum, nothing is known about it. Volunteers from Bewdley Historical Research Group are scanning the collection onto computer so that, in time, it can be made more readily accessible to researchers. If you can, please contact Charles Purcell on 01299 403582

View from the Redthorne I brought an American friend of mine up to Bewdley recently. He’s an African-American chef called Ashbell MacElveen, a chef with an international reputation for gourmet soul food. His mother’s fried chicken recipe has been raved about by Bill Clinton and his sticky bourbon ribs have been wolfed down by Robert DeNiro. I decided the only thing to do was introduce him to the local delicacy – The Faggot! Now, Chris Williams, the chef at the Bailiff’s House serves an excellent faggot with a good onion gravy and creamy mash. Although Ashbell was a little nervous about the name, which has very different connotations in America, he found the great Black Country faggot rich, meaty and delicious. After all, it’s poor-man’s food, making the best use of the leftovers “them upstairs” wouldn’t eat and that’s what Ashbell’s soul food is, too. His great grandfather was a sharecropper and his grandfather sold bootleg moonshine to old Joe Kennedy, father of JFK. He(Ashbell) grew up making the maximum flavour for the minimum cost and he completely related to our local delicacies, including the faggot. Over a couple of days, Ashbell fell in love with Bewdley, particularly enjoying Lightwood Cheese’s superb, fresh cow’s cheese “Chaser” and the gorgeous pork pies from Highley sold at the Deli. He was delighted with his first “real” fish and chips from the Merchants and local strong cider – very different from the non-alcoholic stuff in the USA. We also paid a visit to Lickhill Farm to check out their superb, well-aged meats, which are incredibly reasonably priced, by the way. Ashbell’s endorsement means a lot. The acerbic food critic, A.A. Gill gave his restaurant four stars. He said we should be really proud of our local food. Bewdley might not compete with Ludlow as a culinary destination, but if we all do our best to buy and eat locally, we can certainly help the local economy and eat very well indeed. Neville Farmer

Celebrating silver anniversary In August, Bewdley Petanque Club celebrated its 25th anniversary at its new venue of The Royal Forester, Callow HillBewdley and they combined the day with the official opening. The club began after a group of enthusiasts gathered for the game of Petanque in 1985, playing on garden lawns but after having caused much damage, it prompted them to find a more suitable venue. Today, the league boasts eighteen teams, Bewdley being one of the original three founder members.

Youth point of view Residents complain incessantly about young the people today misbehaving in the streets and causing damage to public property. Underage and binge drinking is considered to be one of the biggest problems in Bewdley at the moment. This is just teenagers being teenagers, and it has to be accepted whether the public likes it or not. Maybe these problems, as some people view it, would be reduced if the council gave more opportunities to the young people. There is very little offered to the younger generation in Bewdley, which is why there are so many of them hanging round on the streets ‘being a nuisance’. I hear of no youth centres being run, which would perhaps reduce the number of kids out on the town. The council needs to set up youth clubs that run on either a Friday or Saturday night; the nights when young people are out on the town most prolifically. These are the measures that should be taken into consideration by the council. This kind of behaviour will carry on, we cannot stop this, but the council would be able to help the matter, it’s just a case of them agreeing to it. Matt Yates

Trees Last month we looked at hedges and this month at good reasons for planting trees. Several spring to mind and here are some of them: trees help to define a boundary and collectively create areas of privacy. Large trees contribute to the landscape and can often enhance the appearance of adjacent buildings or disguise the presence of less attractive ones. In the way they breathe trees capture carbon dioxide and release oxygen to the atmosphere. Trees of all shapes and sizes provide both shelter and habitat to urban and rural wildlife species. As part of the landscape trees are often seen as route indicators alongside paths and roads. And let’s not forget their use as a natural fuel and provider of timber. However, should you live in a conservation area or have a tree with a preservation order placed on it then the ownership of trees and what can be done to them needs more consideration because of the many rules and regulations that apply in these circumstances. Whilst these rules may seem prescriptive and an affront to tree ownership they do protect our conservation area and other significant trees from too much enthusiastic damage. For further detailed information please contact the relevant local authority as it seems that a cavalier approach may have significant financial penalties. Stuart Williams

Frazzle update Stagestruck 2010 .....is coming to Bewdley Bewdley Guiding and Scouting members Invite you to their forthcoming performance.

Thursday 28th October Friday 29th October & Saturday 30th October at

The Bewdley School & 6th Form Centre Stourport Road Look out in local businesses for posters and tickets going on sale. There will also be a history of stagestruck display in Bewdley library during October Hope to see you there

Bewdley Townswomen's Guild A skittles evening was held in August at The Kingsford Pub, Kingsford Country Park, when members and guests aged from 5 to 90 years enjoyed a great night out. The wide variety of food provided was very much enjoyed by all. The reading circle will discuss 'My sisters keeper' by Jodi Picoult at their next meeting in September. The next guild meeting will be on Tuesday 26th October at 7.30pm at Wribbenhall Community Centre when Mrs Madeline Gould will give a talk entitled 'The Square Piano'. New members and visitors are always welcome For more information phone 01299 401235.

Sunday 15th August posed the question 'where shall we walk today?' The forecast was dry with the possibility of showers and so Frazzle and I made our way to the woods. As we walked, I could not stop thinking of my week away in September. It will be hard to leave Frazzle. To date I don't know who will be boarding her. As a 'walker' I know that she will be well cared for. Guide Dogs always need new boarders who can take care of a puppy whilst walkers go on holiday or even have a day out shopping! If you feel you could offer this facility and would like more information please ring me on 01299 405023. Frazzle is now eight months old and as an introduction to her working harness can be seen out and about in the town in her training jacket. She is beginning to learn the commands left and right and appears to recognise the different expectations of her when on a training walk and when free running. News of Arty is promising as he reaches the end of his advanced training. Based in Southampton, he has been exposed to a new range of experiences There is still a lot for him to learn, but the matching process has begun and he may spend his 'working life' on the Isle of Wight. There are many factors to consider when pairing dog and owner, including the natural walking speed of both, dog's possible preference for male or female leader, the working environment etc. Applying to be a puppy walker was one of the best decisions of my life. Many thanks to all of you who support Frazzle's training and the work of the Association through donation and sponsorship. Gabi Wootton

CAFÉ 54 – BewdleyYouth Cafe Café 54 has been open throughout the school holidays and the young people have been busy. They have been to Drayton Manor Park and Water World; a graffiti artist came to the Museum to explain Graffiti Art and many of the young people created their own pieces of art. You can see them in the Café! It was a huge success and Ruth Finney of the Museum and the Youth Cafe Manager, Sarah Watton, are arranging a similar event for half term in October. Many of the young people went to the Party in the Park and had an enjoyable and fun evening. Sarah and the Trustees are working toward providing many more activities, such as arranging exchange visits with other Youth Cafés. A part time assistant has been appointed to give Sarah more time to work with the Trustees on funding applications which are essential to ensure the long term future of the Café. Funding comes from various sources including small grants from the Bewdley Town Council with major funding from the Lottery. I specifically mention this because most of my fellow Trustees have received

comments that the Café costs the public money – it does not and in any event is a much needed facility in the Town and must not be allowed to close. The opening hours are being extended to include Tuesday and Thursday evenings for pupils of 15 and above. Friday evenings will be overseen by a member of one of the churches in the Town. The Trustees are keen to invite anyone interested to become a Member of the Bewdley Youth Café Association and also to invite additional volunteers to the Café. Without them we would not be able to function as we do. We now have over 400 young people signed up and using the Café and we will see many new and exciting projects launched throughout the school year. If anyone wishes to come in and look us up, just make yourself known to Sarah or Jacqui. You will be most welcome. Other groups are invited to use the Cafe during School hours – we hope all can enjoy the facilities we have. I finally would extend my personal thanks to my fellow Trustees for their time and efforts in ensuring we carry on. Derek Killingworth, Chairman of Trustees

So what do I do? Some of us have 9 to 5 jobs; some don’t. Our neighbours might wonder about mine. The car can be in front of the house all day; or gone for several days. Sometimes I get into it smartly dressed; sometimes it’s jeans and other ‘rugged’ clothing. I move odd collections of assorted kit into and out of the ‘mobile office-laboratory’. Depart/return often distinctly early/late. Traffic permitting, if I cross Bewdley Bridge I will glance quickly at river level. Whether or not it has rained, influences what people buy. I’ve delivered the Bridge for a few years now - erratic professional life gets in the way of further Bewdley-support activity. Oops - run out of space before saying what I do. If Editor reports any interest, I can always try to offer a bit more another time. Al Curmist.

Tails of a Veterinary Practice life at Riverside Vets as seen by Gavin the practice cat. Hello to you all, my name is Gavin and I am the practice cat at Riverside Veterinary Clinic in Bewdley. This month has been a busy and interesting one. I was making my inspection rounds the other day and I saw a small, white fluffy thing. Initially, I was unsure what it was, but my two – legged friends at the practice have told me it is a puppy, which is what dogs call their kittens. This little puppy had been having a nasty bout of an upset tummy. The vets admitted him to the practice so that they could keep a close eye on him as he was so tiny and also so they could start him on a special diet to treat his tummy upset. By the afternoon the puppy was very energetic and talkative, so I think he was feeling better. His humans took him home later in the afternoon as the vet said he was improved enough to go home. He has since been back to have his second part vaccinations and was feeling very well. He was a little bit bouncy for me so I retreated upstairs. His humans are getting him the vaccinations so that he will be protected from diseases such as distemper and parvovirus. Off to snooze in a patch of sun now,

Gavin.

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 6TH SEPTEMBER 2010 Grant from Wyre Forest District Council Along with all Parish and Town Councils within the area of Wyre Forest, Bewdley Council responded to a consultation from the District Council as to the future of grants which could be withdrawn. This year the Town Council is due to receive more than £10,000 in grants from the District and consequently whilst understanding the District Council’s need to balance its own books, concern was expressed as to the knock-on effects within Bewdley if those were to be curtailed. Fishing – River Severn In response to advice from the Police, the Council agreed to approach the Environment Agency to carry out checks from time to time to ensure that everyone fishing in the River Severn must be in possession of the relevant permit either for the season or for the day Vandalism - Hanging Baskets It’s a sad fact of life that Bewdley has its fair share of vandalism and anti-social behaviour much of which goes unreported and the culprits never caught. However, that’s not always the case. Last month three of the hanging baskets in Load Street were ripped off the lampposts late at night. The incident was reported and captured on CCTV. The Police arrested the culprit and he was ordered to recompense the Town Council with the full cost of reinstatement which he has paid. Jubilee Gardens The Council agreed to look at working with the District Council to improve the facilities for summer events such as “Music In The Park” especially in times of wet weather. Licensing Act 2003 The Home Office has issued a consultation document on “rebalancing” the Licensing Act given concerns about control of licensed premises and the “drinking culture” that has become prevalent. The Town Council welcomed the prospect of giving local Councils and the Police much stronger powers to remove licences from premises causing problems and to have a much greater say in deciding what opening hours should be locally. Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall are: on Mondays (except where indicated) at 7.30pm are: 11th October, 1st November, 6th December, 4th January (Tuesday), 7th February and 7th March. Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. They are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk. TOWN COUNCIL NEWS IS PRODUCED AND PUBLISHED BY BEWDLEY TOWN COUNCIL

Mentorlink – a volunteer writes When I finished work seven years ago I found to my slight surprise that I missed the contact with young people. I had been working with children for all of my working life and now it had gone a bit quiet. At that point I saw that Andrea Maddocks was looking for volunteers for her newly-established Mentoring Service. I contacted her and – well, have been spending a morning a week in the company of teenagers ever since. As always when one takes up a voluntary job, the volunteer gets at least as much out

of it as the organisation one works for. I get the chance to flex my empathy muscles, be privileged to hear a young person’s confidences, keep a hold on what life is like for them these days and be welcomed into the Mentorlink family which is a very good place to be. I hope in return I give the young people my undivided and unconditional attention; even, on rare occasions, help and advice. (The last piece of advice I gave to my mentee was a really foolproof recipe for baked potatoes). I hope I treat them seriously but informally and make the hour they spend with me worth their while. I would like to continue mentoring for a good while yet. Life would be a great deal more boring without it.

October in the forest This is the season for one of the most dramatic events of the forest year, when the fallow deer begin the rut. The bucks meet at traditional rutting stands where they will challenge and fight to determine who should become the dominant buck, earning the right to mate with does in the area. You may come across these stands as you walk in the forest: a rubbing tree or stump surrounded by worn areas; or you may hear the strange groaning cries of the bucks as they issue their challenges. Other evidence includes frayed saplings and damaged bark where bucks have scent marked, tracks and skid marks at the scene of a fight or muddy wallows surrounded by tracks. This can sound quite intimidating but I can reassure you that the bucks have their minds on one thing and are not likely to notice your presence! The old Deer Museum has been moved to Callow Hill where it will re-open as the Wyre Wildlife Museum for special occasions. The first special event of the month is Grow With Wyre’s Autumn Festival on 2nd and 3rd October, which will see the Forestry Commission’s Wyre Forest Visitor Centre and new Discovery Centre buzzing with activity. There will be horse logging, charcoal making, The Earth Heritage Trust’s Rock and Fossil Roadshow, chainsaw carving and greenwood turning on a pole lathe: all happening from 11am to 4pm on each day. In this wonderful fruiting year which brought back memories of the heyday of the cherry orchards, local apple and pear growers are being encouraged to bring their own fruit for juicing and also to have the varieties identified by experts.

Please bring three examples of the fruit for identification and considerably more for juice production! There will also be local produce for sale, autumn-inspired crafts for adults and children and seed gathering: families will be encouraged to go off into the forest and collect as many kinds of tree seeds as they can and then choose one or two to grow in a pot made of recycled newspaper. Fungus Foray £6 per person: Sunday 3rd October: 10.30am – 12.30pm at Callow Hill, 2pm – 4pm at Earnwood car park; Sunday 24th October: 10.30am – 12.30pm at Earnwood car park, 2pm – 4pm at Hawkbatch car park. Tuesday 26th October Dip and Dye Use different plants to turn wool into glorious natural colours.
