Friends of Bewdley Museum

As we move towards Autumn The Friends of Bewdley Museum can reflect on a busy summer period. Feedback from the developments at the museum has been positive and volunteers have been very, very active over the summer months. August began with a bang. The Friends hosted the 2009 Bewdley in Bloom prizegiving in the Guildhall, where over 30 winners and their guests heard Central TV’s Keith Wilkinson enthuse that Bewdley was his favourite town in the area and how nice it was to arrive for a pleasant task to give out cups rather than to report on the activities of the River Severn. After the prize giving The Friends attended the first of the music in gardens where they had sponsored local talent Carrie Hayden. It was a lovely afternoon with the gardens full of people and picnics. October will open with a thank you for all volunteers in the museum hosted by Wyre Forest District Council. Volunteers are an essential part of Bewdley Museum; they add so much to the visitor experience from staging brass rubbing, opening the Air Raid Shelter and new Front of House role, meeting and greeting visitors who want more information. If you are interested in volunteering please telephone Carol Mathieson on 01299 400386 for more information. You can also help by joining The Friends, only £5 a year, leaflets are available in the museum and you will know that you too are doing your bit for Bewdley and the museum. Penny Griffiths Chair,The Friends of Bewdley Musuem.

Where are they now?

The correct answer was : Angela Pitt Well done to Richard Perrin and Marguerite Cooper.

Now what about this one...

E-mail us if you've guessed who it is.

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley. It is delivered free monthly to more than 4,600 homes

Now that autumn is in the wings, I often wake up to the rather beautiful sight of the river down in the valley wearing a cosy fleece of white mist along its length. I was musing on this the other Sunday as I walked along Severnside North on my way home from church, this time in sunshine. The stretch of riverside was full of people sitting at the tables, ambling along its length or leaning over the railings watching the swans. The adults were sitting in the sun chatting, the children were applying ice cream to their faces, and over all was a cosy smell of fish and chips. Everyone looked as happy as the reserved Brits can allow themselves; some were even laughing.

I felt pretty mellow too as I reflected that most of these people had to leave Bewdley later and go back home; I was staying put. You know, I find it very easy to become blasé and critical about our town; we all grumble about the narrow congested streets and lack of car parking; about yet another set of roadworks or the steep hills we labour up with our shopping. Yet we live in a town people get in their cars to come and enjoy; we have our river but also our forest and those hills that give us some superb views from unexpected corners of roads round town. (Can I recommend the top of Tudor Road for those of you who haven’t tried that end of town?) So let’s open our eyes even wider as we walk around our town. Let’s congratulate ourselves on choosing to live in a corner of the West Midlands that takes a deal of beating when it comes to sheer beauty. And let’s take every chance of welcoming all those people who come here because they think so too.

Maggie Says Goodbye

The path of life leads us in many directions, my path does not have many twists and turns.

My path to become a florist started in my 20s, but as I worked full time I could not take the course. The next change was when the boys came along and as everyone knows who has children it’s a full time occupation.

A few years after that, my husband decided to open a nursery for plants and once it became successful I was able to start floristry training. I studied for five years and then my first venture into running my own flower business was at the nursery and it became very busy. By this time we were coming to the end of running a nursery so I came to town at the back of Timmis’s new shop complex. That was in 1995. 16 months after opening in Timmis’s I moved to where you know me – Maggie’s Florist, Load Street.

In total I have worked in Bewdley town for 14 years and enjoyed every minute of it. This was a good time in my life. Lots of laughter, jokes, enjoyment, and customers.

A lot of customers became friends; you see them regularly and talk about what’s been happening in theirs and my life since last you saw them.

I’d like to think a florist’s job has many hats: supporter, listener, adviser, fundraiser, and friend.

That brings me to additional interests in town life. I became a member of the Chamber of Trade, Christmas Lights Festival, and of course, one of the Chamber Maids. We are three ladies and one gentleman who organise events to support Bewdley Town. We have organised the French Market, St. Georges Day, the Art Event, and the Pumpkin Festival. We have a lot of support and this is what Bewdley Town life is all about. Support, unity, friendship, joy, happiness; who could ask for more? Thank you once again to the people of Bewdley. I take my hat off to you!

Bewdley Methodist Church

In September our new Minister, the Rev. Crawford Logan will be arriving.

His service of Welcome will be held on the 6th September at 6.30 p.m. at Trinity Methodist Church, Kidderminster, and his first service in Bewdley will be on the 27th September.

Our Harvest Festival service will be on the 20th September at 10.30 a.m. The service will be led by one of our previous ministers,

Rev. Deanne Evans (Snelling).

If you remember Deanne and would like to come and join us you will be more than welcome. We will be having a ‘bring and share’ lunch after the service and all are welcome to stay for that.

The proceeds from the Harvest service will be donated to Homestart and a representative will be coming along to give us some background information about the charity.

get really active

You move to a new area and you have a new job to settle in to, a new home to find and perhaps schools to sort out for the kids. Once the initial hard work is over, you then start to think about how to meet people and build a social circle. Or perhaps you have been in the area for a long time but would like to expand your horizons? If you’re interested in coming along to a couple of evenings so see if you like it, give one of us a ring. If you like, we can even arrange for a couple of us to meet you in a pub for an informal chat. We are a relaxed bunch and welcome all sorts - just as long as you enjoy social occasions and would like to be able to put something back in to the community a couple of times a year. We look forward to hearing from you.

Ribbesford, Bewdley and Dowles Parish Fete

The fete, held at the Button Oak pub on 1st August was, despite the torrential rain, a great success.

Cate Gillespie, one of the organisers gained the attention of the waiting crowd by manically wielding a teapot and tomato slice (stolen from the white elephant stall). Local entrepreneur and passionate supporter of Bewdley, Dale Permenter of DRP films, opened the fete and was presented with a bottle of red wine in appreciation.

Huge “thank you’s” go to Mrs Susan Price for organising the main raffle; Robert May for persuading numerous vintage car owners to display their spectacular vehicles, still amazingly shiny despite the weather; Mr Bernard Leighton, for the use of his

It really was great fun and the general humour held out as numerous stall holders and car booters fought all afternoon to keep their goods dry(ish)! Meanwhile the battle for the Tug of War slip, slided its way across the adjoining field in glorious mud!

The benefits and pleasures of gardening…

Potatoes, cabbages, onions, leeks, courgettes, squash, peas and beans!

These are just some of the things that are being harvested by the gardeners of Bewdley at the moment. What enormous pleasure (and of course health enhancing physical exertion!) is associated with the growing, harvesting and eating of our own produce.

If you have been inspired by produce shows over the last few weeks but haven’t yet started growing things yourself, why not start now and plan for next year. And, if you don’t have a plot of land to garden, would like someone else to grow vegetables in a garden that is too big for you to manage, or would be interested in allotment type plots in Bewdley itself, then do phone me, on 401109.

Finally if you are interested in other local community sustainability issues, please contact the Bewdley Development Trust, tel. 405516, email info@bewdley.org.uk or look at www.bewdley.org.uk.

Autumn is on its way

So far the weather has been a really mixed bag this summer and now we move to September, the first of the autumnal months. Although we may have nice days, they become much shorter and we can at the end of the month expect heavy dew and mists and perhaps the first morning frosts.

September is a month for harvesting fruits, if for storage just before they are ripe, preparing for the end of the vigorous growing season by tidying lawns and borders, cutting back herbaceous plants, deadheading of roses, control of mildew

and those recalcitrant greenflies. Believe it or not it’s also time to think about bulbs again. Plan where you think clumps will look best; maybe between shrubs or herbaceous plants or even in the rockery.

Again as we look forward to spring, think of the vegetables that might be needed next year and get an early start under glass or in the greenhouse. In sheltered areas sow lettuce under glass for overwintering; sweet peas can be started from seed at the end of the month. Take cuttings of evergreen shrubs such as geraniums and hydrangeas; take good care of chrysanthemums and dahlias, as they move towards their best. Enjoy what’s left of the warm days.

Since I can remember I have always wanted to be a member of the Police and to be in a position to help, assist and support others. In my opinion there is nothing better than being part of a warm and friendly community and a committed local policing team that tries to make positive changes happen. I am continuing to settle into the role, which up till now has provided many steep learning curves and challenges. However, I would like to assure you all I am up to any challenges that Bewdley chooses to put to me and will always aim to do my best.

My previous employment has consisted of a range of different roles but mainly working for a large utility company as a Complaints Manager. One of my many memorable complaints was dealing with an elderly lady who had had a collection of plates which her

late husband had bought her, accidentally damaged by the engineer. I researched the collection and was able to get her replacements delivered to her door, unknown to her. When she took delivery of the plates she called me up in tears of joy. I believe that dealing with complaints gave me some of the skills required for my current role.

Whilst I would love to do this for everyone on every occasion, I will only be able to do what I can within the remit of my position, so sadly I won’t be fixing your smashed window or replacing your stolen car or jewellery. What I will try and do is prevent such things happening in the first place!

Finally, I would like to say thank you for the kind hearted welcome that I have been given and I look forward to meeting you all when out and about, or at one of our PACT meetings at 6.30 p.m Wednesday 9th September (at The Baptist Church, High St, Bewdley) or on Wednesday 18th November (at The Bewdley School & 6th Form Centre).

Best wishes, Nicky. CSO 40009 Nicholla Fice Bewdley & Rural Local Policing Team

Our Town History

Community News

Bewdley in the early 16th century

John Leland, English antiquary and library keeper to King Henry VIII has been described as “the father of English local history”, between 1540 and 1546 he travelled through England and Wales making notes as he went. The majority of his notes still survive including his description of Bewdley nearly five hundred years ago.

Leland recalls that the land between Kidderminster and Bewdley was a gentle incline, somewhat barren, and that the town of Bewdley was approached by a newly built great stone bridge linking the counties of Worcestershire and Shropshire. The town of itself consisted of just three memorable streets (these streets are now known to us as Severnside, Load Street and High Street), with Tickenhill Park on the hillside above the town surrounded by the Wyre Forest. Load Street served as a market place at this time and the timber chapel of ease (now St. Anne's Church) stood at the heart of the town with the parish church located at Ribbesford one mile down river.

He was clearly impressed with the beauty of the town and he says that at sunrise the whole town glittered as if made from gold because all of the buildings were newly built. He spoke to a Bewdley merchant who confirmed that the town had been just a poor hamlet until the stone bridge was completed and the town had been rebuilt as the result of the business generated by the new bridge. John Adey

OctoberFest 2009

As we enjoy the summer weather (am I tempting fate here?) it is that time of year again to remind you that all the festival fringe events throughout the month of October will be summarised as OctoberFest. Last year 8,000 flyers were distributed throughout the Wyre Forest and beyond and many said that they were surprised how much is going on in the town. There is always great music in the pubs around the town and last year’s blues event at the Packhorse was a welcome addition. However, the one area missing is comedy. This year we are ahead of ourselves as a number of people have already told us about their plans including a Performance Poet, a Cricket Dinner at the Royal Foresters, a Petanque competition, an Art Exhibition at the Quay Gallery, Creative Writing at the Museum, Apple pressing & Cider festival, and a French Market & Pumpkin festival at the end of the month. So get your thinking caps on and let us know what you are planning so that your event can be included in this year’s flyer. Chris Griffin, Festival Office, Old Snuff Mill, Park Lane, Bewdley DY12 2EL T: 01299 404 808 E: admin@bewdleyfestival.org.uk

After a dodgy forecast the sun shone on the first day of the Regatta, as crews from all over the country arrived in Bewdley to compete.

Bewdley Reggatta 2009

The scent of sun-cream and burgers hung in the air, with the shouts of encouragement from supporters who lined the banks on both sides of the river.

The youngest competitors were only 11 or 12, and the oldest were experienced rowers in their 60’s; the races ranged from single scullers to boats with 8 rowers and a cox. Bewdley had many successes;- a group from the Pub and Club regatta earlier this year stormed through to ‘win their novice pot’, ie win a qualifying race which takes them onto the second rung of the status-ladder of rowing points. As well as a pewter tankard, they also won the opportunity to give their coach (our club captain) an impromptu swim! There were other wins (and swims!) for Bewdley crews, as well as some hard-fought races.

In spite of Sunday’s weather not being ideal, there were more exciting races, including a dead-heat between 2 scullers which had to be re-rowed. This was probably more entertaining for the spectators than the competitors! All in all a fabulous weekend;- and next year we’ll do it all again! Melanie Gunn

Out and About with Gary Bewdley Horticulture Show

September in the Forest

For over a month now I have been picking juicy blackberries from the hedgerows and keeping my eye on my favourite elderberry tree for vitamin C-packed syrup and purple elderberry wine.

This could be a good time to look for mushrooms and toadstools if the weather is right – the best conditions are found after a few days of heavy rain following a dry spell. The fungi we see are the reproductive parts of the organisms which exist as hyphal threads in soil, in leaf litter or other dead material.

In the 1920s Carleton Rea found 1,391 species of fungi in the Wyre Forest (according to Norman Hickin in “The natural history of an English forest”). This score outdoes both Epping Forest and the New Forest, despite the latter being about ten times the area. However, no-one really knows what the total is now. The Wyre Forest Study Group have records of about 700 species and new ones are found every year. What is certain is that the more you look (and the more people look), the more you find. If you’d like to become a fungus spotter we have 2 events to help you learn: on September 26th there is a Fungus Workshop from 10am to 4pm at the Discovery Centre (including a foray into the woods) to learn what fungi are, how they live and which are safe to eat. Adults only, £25 each. There will also be a Fungus Foray into the woods on Sunday 4th October. The morning walk (10.30am – 12.30) will start at the Earnwood car park, and the afternoon (2pm – 4pm) at Hawkbatch. The cost is £6 each and you will need a basket, small knife and a notebook. Lunch may be purchased from the Visitor Centre. Booking is required – please call 01299 266929.

We’re getting ready for the Grow With Wyre Autumn Festival around the Forestry Commission’s Wyre Forest Visitor Centre on 3rd and 4th October. This time there will be exciting demonstrations of traditional forest work including horse logging, charcoal making, fence post cleaving and greenwood turning on a pole lathe.

Local apple and pear growers are being encouraged not only to bring their own fruit for juicing but also to have the varieties identified by experts. There will also be local produce for sale, children’s crafts, chainsaw carving and the all-important seed gathering which will help to create a bank of young trees ready for planting back into local hedgerows and woods as part of the Grow With Wyre special trees and hedgerows project. Get the date in your diary now and don’t forget to hold on to this page!

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 3 AUGUST 2009

Air Quality in Welch Gate

Councillors were concerned to learn from local residents in Welch Gate that contrary to promises made earlier, very little if anything had happened to overcome some of the traffic problems in Welch Gate. It still had some of the highest levels of pollution in the Wyre Forest area in the form of nitrous oxide. They noted correspondence between Worcestershire County Council and some of the Welch Gate residents that had indicated some trial traffic management measures would be put in place but nothing had happened. There was however a fresh promise from the County Council to produce some designs to go out to consultation and hence the Town Council agreed to look again at the matter at its next meeting in September. Flower beds and flower tubs

Councillors agreed to write to Wyre Forest District Council seeking an assurance that Bewdley was not losing out when it came to expenditure on flower beds and tubs in the town. There had been some reductions in the planting this year as a result of budgetary measures but it seemed that Kidderminster was still able to have some magnificent displays. It was recognised that the funding for those could come from elsewhere and so Councillors asked the District Council for a financial breakdown of expenditure and to check that allocations on a per capita basis to the two towns were equal. Speed Activated Signs

With funding available, local County Councillor John Campion had asked the Council if it would like to nominate up to three locations for the siting of these devices to help to reduce speeding within the Bewdley Division. Councillors welcomed the opportunity and put forward Long Bank, Dowles Road and Cleobury Road for consideration. Heritage Sunday

The Council agreed once again to open up The Guildhall on Heritage Sunday which this year takes place on Sunday 13th September during the afternoon and hoped members of the public would take the opportunity to come down and look around the building and learn about its history and some of the traditions that we are keen to maintain. Bewdley Museum

The ever popular summer holiday activities kicked off with clay pipe painting in the newly refurbished saw yard area. This drop-in activity was one of several which complemented this year’s extended range of pre-booked workshops. Throughout the summer, children enjoyed creating colourful artwork, through learning new techniques and skills such as batik and mosaic. To coincide with the London 2012 Open Weekend at the end of July, museum staff created a colourful Olympic themed Garden area. More than 100 youngsters added their own brightly decorated flowers and pebbles to the garden. The event also presented the opportunity to promote Worcestershire’s ‘Raising Our Game’ brand and logo. Local garden designer Judy Knight, who helped to inspire the museum garden, also judged Josh Macuean, aged 10, as the deserved winner of the Olympic themed garden design competition. This month sees the return of the Schools Education programme after its summer break. This is a unique resource for schools wishing to access a wide range of cross-curricular studies. The highly successful Blitz and Evacuation programme is already fully booked for this year. The Education Service is looking forward to working with schools and other groups to deliver new and exciting activities, whilst keeping to the Museum catchphrase ‘A surprise around every corner’.

Free Internet Access

Did you know that if you’re the lucky owner of a library card, you can have 2 hours access to a computer – daily?

Just turn up and find a free terminal, or if you want to be sure of some time, you can book a session (up to two hours long) by phone, over the internet or in person. We also have a terminal available in fifteen minute slots, if you just want to check e-mails, or have a quick browse.

For the technophobe, we offer computer/internet ‘taster sessions’ covering basic Word Processing, Internet use and E-mail. No-one at the library is a computer whiz, so don’t be shy!

If Family History is your passion, you can access Ancestry.co.uk from the library free of charge. Anyone needing a little help getting started on this popular pastime may also have a Family History taster session with a very enthusiastic member of staff!

Call in and see us for details.

Grow with Wy re

Grow with Wyre is funding the restoration of 15 orchards plus three exemplar community and education orchards across the Wyre Forest area. Seven orchards have already been supported by the project. We are looking for people who would like to plant or re-instate an orchard to get in! If you live in the project area, (see the map above), please contact linda.iles@forestry.gsi.gov.uk or call 01299 269 048 for an application form.

O rchard Wi ldlife

Traditional orchards combine fruit trees, grassland and hedgerow. They provide homes for many plants and animals because they provide this variety of habitats. This is important because many bumblebee species, which help pollinate the fruit trees, need tussocky grassland for nesting in summer and hedgerows to hibernate under in winter. Many beetles which eat live wood as larvae, feed on the flowers of tall herbs such as hogweed and wild angelica and hawthorn as adults.

Dead and dying trees with ‘veteran features’ such as hollow trunks and rot holes provide the most important habitat for nesting birds and rare insects.

Traditional orchards are important habitats for amphibians, mammals and birds. A variety of bats forage over traditional orchards, Dormice and many wild birds forage and live in the hedges surrounding them. Even amphibians like frogs and Great Crested Newts may be found in orchards that have ponds, because the rough grassland provides foraging for insects, with fallen logs for shelter in winter. Foxes and badgers will eat fallen fruit and have been seen reaching up to pick fruit from low branches! Wildlife needs trees of different ages within the orchard. Sadly many orchards have just trees of the same age group, or might be too small to support much wildlife. Grow with Wyre is helping not just by restoring orchards but also by giving away fruit trees for hedgerows and orchards. If you’d like free trees or more information please contact louise.sutherland@forestry.gsi.gov.uk or call 01299 269 048.
