The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley.
It is delivered free monthly to more than 4,600 homes The harvests in, the schools are back, holidays are over and the days have shortened. Oh, dear, I think I feel rather depressed. Some stiffening of the sinews is required. I shall sit and work on: Ten reasons to welcome autumn: 1. My apple trees are keeping me supplied with sensationally tasty eaters 2. The rush to pick and freeze all the fruit and veg from the garden is over 3. Everywhere looks wonderful in shades of orange, gold and brown 4. The hayfever season is over 5. The clocks haven’t gone back yet 6. The garden has stopped demanding twentyfour-hour attention 7. Holiday prices have gone down 8. Our societies’ activities are all starting up again after the summer break Oh dear, I think I’ve run out. Do feel free to email me something cheery about September to ensure I stay smiley throughout the month. I’m sure this month’s Bridge will help. We have more stunning photos from Gary, more news from our regulars and more evidence that Bewdley stays a good place to live whatever the season. Margaret

The standard of the displays this year was excellent, particularly in the large and small private gardens, where the marks were very close. Mr.and Mrs. CC Quayle of Bowcastle Farm, Tanners Lane, who have not entered previously, won the large garden class. Their garden was described as very special, All Saints church won praise for very good maintenance, though it would benefit from more flowering shrubs and roses along the boundaries. Now, if any kind persons could donate the odd shrub or two, there is a good home waiting. An innovation this year was a scarecrow competition for those who entered the School category. The winner was “Fred the Farmer” by Far Forest Primary, which had interesting legs, clad in crisp packets Why is it that such a high proportion of mobile home dwellers are so keen to put in entries? There were 21 mobile home surrounds to be judged. These included eight from The Woodland Park Homes, which has not previously sent in any entries. Welcome to you, and well done for taking two of the top three places. . Hugh Morgan, (We heard from Mrs Quayle earlier in the year. Well done for further success! Ed.)

Juicing & Cider Making – a one day course Friday 16th September 2011or Saturday 17th September 2011 10 am till 3.30pm Uncllys Farm, Tanners Hill, Bewdley Come along and find out how to turn all those spare apples and pears into quality juice or cider! This course is bought to you by the Grow with Wyre project hence there is only a £10 booking fee for what would otherwise be a far more expensive course. Spaces are limited so book early to avoid disappointment. To book your place write to: Community Greenspace Team. Worcester Woods Countryside Centre, Wildwood Drive, Worcester, WR5 2LG or email communitygreenspace@worcestershire.gov.uk .
As a follow-up to this course the Grow With Wyre Partnership and Wyre Community Land Trust are seeking to help local people make the most of their autumn fruit bonanza rather than waste the fruit. The fruit does not need to be perfect and for cider making could also include windfalls. Equipment and expertise is available to
enable small groups/ individuals press fruit to make juice and/or cider. There will be a modest charge to cover transport costs and replenishment of equipment. As a rough guide 100 kilos fruit (about 8 sacks) should yield 40-60 litres of juice. This is dependent on fruit variety, ripeness and the efficiency of the various presses. They have a range of fruit presses available for hire including the all-important step of milling the fruit before pressing, known in the trade as “scratting”. What you do with the juice is up to you: • You can also hire pasteurisers (pasteurised juice keeps for up to 12 months) and supply glass or plastic bottles for storage. (Small quantities can be frozen in plastic bottles.) • For the alcoholically minded, cider/perry production is not daunting but some extra equipment, eg largish fermentation vessels are required. It is hoped to place a bulk order to gain a discount and save on delivery charges. Contact Richard Greenwood Tel 01299 402513 email: rmgreenwood@talktalk.net
New telephone service Wyre Forest Citizens Advice Bureau now provides a new telephone information service available five days per week from 10.00 am – 4 pm The new number for this service is 0844 4111303 (5p per minute from a BT landline) If using a mobile call 0300 3300 650 This is a county wide service, working alongside Worcester, Redditch, Bromsgrove Malvern and Wychavon bureaux. Tails of a Veterinary Practice – life at Riverside Vets as seen by Gavin the practice cat
Dear Editor As a dedicated gardener I must say the tubs and hanging baskets in Bewdley this year are stunning,So thanks to the museum, many pubs and shops that have joined in making our town so colourful this year. It looks amazing and lifts my spirits even on a rainy day, well done!! The park too is so beautiful and the orchard's wild flower meadow delights the eyes. Thank you to the gardeners for all their hard work. Sandra Edwards
Successful year for Rotary
Hi all, Hope you have managed to enjoy the lovely warm weather we had in July and early August. You will be pleased to hear I managed to fit in plenty of snoozes in the sun in spite of my many duties at the practice. I am becoming a fully computer literate feline and now have my own facebook page! It has been a lot to learn, but I think I am getting the hang of it now and it is certainly fun. I have been spending some time in the practice reception recently as I thought it was time I inspected that area again. I am pleased to report that my humans were suitably accommodating and made sure I had a lap to sit on whilst they carried on with their work. I am looking forward to September as our Saturday helper Claire will be coming to the practice two days a week to train as a Veterinary Nurse. Claire is very good to me and is excellent at paying me attention. Better go now and have my cat nap, Gavin
The Rotary Club of Bewdley has raised in excess of ÂŁ15000 over the past year and all done locally. Retiring President Terry Garbett said he was hugely proud to have been at the helm of the club in such a successful year. "I have been overwhelmed by the support and generosity of local people, especially in these difficult times. Apart from taking part in the Christmas lights festival, including erecting the Christmas tree, supporting the Lions with the Duck race, marshalling parades and other community projects, they have also had a vibrant social calendar. Members and guests have enjoyed quiz nights, black country nights, ferret racing, a wonderful day at Shelsley Walsh hill climb, and a hugely successful concert for Macmillan cancer care" If you would like to know more about the work and enjoyment that Rotary provides please contact www.bewdleyrotaryclub.org.uk As community service organization, they welcome everyone regardless of age, gender or creed. 2011:The 50th Anniversary of Amnesty International Fifty years ago, in May 1961, outraged by the imprisonment of two Portuguese students for toasting freedom, British lawyer, Peter Benenson, launched an “Appeal for Amnesty” in The Observer newspaper. His appeal, reprinted worldwide, became the catalyst for the formation of Amnesty International. In The Observer article Peter Benenson coined a new term - “prisoner of conscience”, defining this as “Any person who is physically restrained (by imprisonment or otherwise) from expressing (in any form of words or symbols) any opinion which he honestly holds and which does not advocate or condone personal violence". One of the first Amnesty adopted prisoners was Angolan poet, Dr Agostino Neto, who later went on to become President of Angola. In 1977 Amnesty International won the Nobel Peace Prize for its work. Today Amnesty has 224,000 supporters in the UK alone and more than 3 million across the globe. Its work is needed today as much as it was 50 years ago. Peter Benenson said: “Only when the last prisoner of conscience has been freed, when the last torture chamber has been closed, when the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights is a reality for the world’s people, will our work be done.” The Wyre Forest group of Amnesty International will be holding a secondhand bookstall outside Bewdley Museum on Saturday September 10th. Do come and support our work.

A band to be proud of! Bewdley Concert Band performed their first concert outside of Bewdley on Sunday 27th July and proved without doubt that they are an excellent ambassador for the Town. The band was hired to play in Gheluvelt Park, Worcester as part of a season of performances sponsored by Worcester City Council. The Band, which only formed nine months ago, looked fantastic in their new uniform. Their royal blue ties and cravats were bought for them by band member Derek Mc Cluskey. They also showed off their Bewdley Concert Band stand banners bought with a grant from Bewdley Town Council. Mrs Valerie Blount, secretary of the Band said “It was a wonderful afternoon for the band and the audience. The bandstand is in the middle of a lake, it’s a lovely park, the sun shone down on us and there were hundreds of people enjoying the atmosphere created by the carefully chosen programme of music.” The band is still welcoming new members. If you play a woodwind or brass instrument and wish to join they rehearse on a Saturday morning at Bewdley Primary School. They are particularly looking for Clarinet players. Contact Valerie Blount on 07813769904 email bewdleyconcertband@gmail.com
Visitor numbers up at the Tourist Information Centre Bewdley Tourist Information Centre had a really good summer season with visitor numbers being up once again. The weather has certainly worked in theirr favour and perhaps more people are taking short breaks nearer to home, rather than their usual one or two weeks away. Perhaps their most unusual phone call this summer was from two visitors who were locked in their bed and breakfast accommodation with no obvious signs of how to get out and more importantly no sign of breakfast. They were getting quite distressed and wanted to call the police but were asked to give us a few minutes to sort it out. To the TIC it was just another day at the office and after a few, admit rather frantic phone calls, they were able to summon help and the visitors were rescued. Apart from being a little hungry they were none the worse for their ordeal. Please remember that you can still purchase your Bewdley Festival tickets from us and there are plenty of seats available for the daytime talks. In addition we have tickets for the First Anniversary Concert of the Bewdley Concert Band at St Anne’s Church on Saturday 8 October at 7.30 pm. So please call in to see us you are always welcome.

Sight Concern Sight Concern, previously known as Worcestershire Association for the Blind, has been in existence for over 80 years. It is an independent county-wide charity that provides support, information and services to people affected by sight loss. It is estimated that 10,000 people in Worcestershire experience significant sight loss and SCW is in touch with about a quarter of them. Demand is increasing due to the ageing population and health issues, such as diabetes. Sight is the sense that most people fear losing most. Through our Worcester Centre help is available to adjust to the affects of sight loss, teach new skills, give vital information and help people to find their confidence again. The Kidderminster branch covers the Wyre Forest area and is run by volunteers. The monthly social is held in the chantry of St Mary’s church, with around 40 people attending. Members enjoy a light lunch usually followed by entertainment or a talk. Transport to and from home is provided, whenever possible. For these people the charity, through its Worcester centre, coordinates regular visits by volunteer home visitors who might read their mail, go for a walk or even take people down the pub! Currently 33 people are receiving such help across the Wyre Forest area. Peter Bylett, 01562 631561 peter@bylett.com
Bewdley Library - new service and Age Concern information The other night at home I was so bored that I ended up watching a video of Benny Hill’s ‘Ernie the Fastest Milkman in the West’* on YouTube. This is not something a woman with a family and a job in an intellectually stimulating place such as a library should admit, so why am I doing so? Because it reminded me how old I am. We can’t do anything about getting older; spending thousands on cosmetic procedures will only give a temporary boost, at best. Maybe the best thing to do is make sure we have the best life we can, all the time we’ve got it. Bewdley library provides a Housebound service for readers who can no longer come into the library to choose their books in person, and this can be a real lifeline for someone adjusting to reduced mobility. We’ve also now got a regular visit from a representative of Age Concern, who will be in the library on the first Thursday of every month, armed with leaflets and information about help and support available for the senior members of our community. So if you know a reader who can’t get about anymore, or you need information about health or money in the advancing years, come along and see us. Community News Dear Editor, Please can I correct some errors in the “View from the Redthorne” August article. There is a reference to a bottle kiln as being on Dog Lane. Shown on an early 19th century painting by J. Wood, this kiln was actually part of the Skey chemical works which was not on Dowles Brook but was much closer to Bewdley. For those of us old enough to remember it, the Bewdley Gas Works was built on the same site. Although the exact use of the kiln, referred to as the Rotunda in documents, is not known, it was not used for firing pottery. We look forward to welcoming everyone to Wharton Park and will be pleased to give a complimentary entrance to new visitors. Judith Richards
WRIBBENHALL WI At the meeting held on 8th August the President Beryl Bubb reported that following on from last months’ talk on Pegged Rugs many members are now taking up this old hobby also Jan Pearce stated that as many attended her painting class, follow up sessions will be arranged for later in the year. Numbers were taken for the Council meeting to be held at Stourport and also
the autumn group meeting. After tea John Clewes of the R.S.P.B. gave an extremely interesting and informative talk, showing slides of birds and wild life. Many endangered species of birds are now coming back and numbers increasing due to wild life reserves and improved habitat. The next meeting on 1st September will be a demonstration and talk by David Packwood, on Straw Corn Dollies.

July and August at The Hop Pole Allotment Although like all gardeners we've been experiencing the problems associated with lack of rain there have still been abundant yields on the allotment over the last two months. Courgettes, peas, mangetout, beetroot and broad beans have all been appearing on the pub menu, an oven-baked risotto with beetroot being one of the more unusual items on offer recently. Sweet peas from the garden have graced the pub's tables daily since mid June but as the plants succumb to mildew Cosmos flowers have begun to take their place. The bases of the runner and French bean plants are swathed with the lush foliage and pretty blue, trumpet-like flowers of shoofly (Nicandra), a plant much grown by cottage gardeners in the past, usually by the kitchen door or under windows, to keep flies at bay. Last but not least the hens are coming along very well, a couple of them having re-grown all of their feathers. They now all have names thanks to Shuttle readers who sent in suggestions and are a draw for children visiting with their parents. Not only have some children helped in feeding them but the birds stimulate lots of conversation about egg laying, the re-growth of their plumage and the way in which their well-being can be assessed from the colour of their combs; these are turning from white to a good healthy pinkish red. The hens are so easy to look after and it's been very rewarding watching them grow strong and healthy after their battery cage ordeal. If you are thinking of getting a few hens, do consider rescuing some ex battery birds; they will reward you. It’s Good for You It’s official! Medical experts agree that one of the best ways to keep fit doesn’t involve running, work-outs in the gym, or strict dieting. It’s much easier , and much more fun: it’s singing! And everyone can do it. If you haven’t tried singing for a long time, come along and try. Bewdley Choral Society starts its new season at 7.45 on Tuesday 20th September in St Anne’s Church. This is a friendly group which meets on Tuesdays from September to Easter. Everyone is welcome; you don’t have to be experienced or able to read music and you won’t be asked to sing on your own. To start the season we will be practising to sing along with a Brass Band in December. What are you waiting for? Come and enjoy keeping fit!

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS
Community News
TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 1st AUGUST Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations Councillors received information from the Government about the “Beacon Project” which aims to have 2012 Beacons lit across the country on Monday 4th June 2012 as part of the Jubilee celebrations. The beacons can either be traditional bonfires on open ground or gas lit flares erected on church towers. The Council is registering Bewdley as a place where a Beacon will be lit with a preference for having one lit on the St Anne’s Church Tower subject to agreement with the Vicar and Diocesan Authorities. Heritage Town Trail Markers The Town Clerk had reported upon the loss (believed theft) of 12 of the Town Heritage Trail pavement markers. These act as guides for visitors and locals walking round the town and across the river. Nine had gone from the Wribbenhall side and three from the town centre. Despite being fixed into and made flush with the pavement, they have been carefully prised out by persons unknown. Councillors agreed to take advice as to replacing them with a nonmetallic material to reduce risk of theft in the future. Localism Councillors agreed to set up a Working Group to look at the likely effect of the Localism Bill currently going through Parliament and how it could impact on the Town Council. Mayor’s Chain The Mayor’s Chain is an important piece of civic regalia which was acquired by the then Borough of Bewdley in 1897 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. However, during its history two of the 30 shields have become detached and are presumed lost and some repairs need to be carried out to the scrolls and the enamel. It was agreed that replicas of the shields should be made and the repairs should go ahead to restore it to its full value. Blackstone to Burlish 50 mph speed limit Councillors agreed to support proposals by the County Council to put in place a 50 mph speed limit on the B4195 from the Blackstone (by-pass) roundabout up through the sandstone cutting and onwards to Burlish where it becomes part of Stourport’s 30mph zone. Future Town Council meetings Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall on Mondays at 7.30pm are: 5th September, 10th October, 7th November and 5th December. Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. They are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk TOWN COUNCIL NEWS IS PRODUCED AND PUBLISHED BY BEWDLEY TOWN COUNCIL

September In The Forest September can be a wonderful time of summer weather and autumn fruitfulness. The apples are ripening, the blackberries and damsons are nearly gone and the jam is made! A forest walk at this time of year is enlivened by the activity of birds and squirrels as they make the most of crops of the berries and nuts, while late flowers attract bees, hoverflies, butterflies and other insects. This is a good time to identify the different trees of the forest with the various kinds of seeds there to help you. Look out for acorns, beech nuts, bright red guelder rose and rowan berries, field maple keys and birch catkins. There is a new leaflet available from the Forestry Commission which introduces the “tree family” to young woodlanders, available free from our venues. On Saturday 11th September there will be a great event at the Wyre Forest Visitor Centre, Callow Hill, to mark the International Year of the Forest. Themes of the day will cover • Timber and firewood production, with tree felling and coppice wood crafts (Have a go at pole lathing and see hurdles being made!) • Wildlife displays in the newly-opened Wildside of Wyre museum and information in the Worcestershire Biological Records Centre • Sustainability trail around the beautiful, environmentally-friendly Community
Natural England Events In September 1st Bird walk and make a large wooden bird box for kids – 10:30am – 12:30pm £2 per child – Meet at Wyre Forest Visitor Centre 15th and 29th Tiny Adventurers – tots (aged 2-5) learn and play while parents relax! – 11am-1pm - £3 per child – Uncllys Farm,

Off to the seaside Last month St Anne’s Church, waved goodbye to the Rev Joe Heaton. Joe has been Curate at the church for the last three years and now leaves to take up a parish on the Isle of Man, swapping land-locked Bewdley for a seaside parish. All four Anglican churches in the town packed the church for his farewell service and afterwards shared coffee and a special farewell cake iced by a parishioner, Mrs Sylvia Huckle. To mark the occasion the St Anne’s bellringers rang a quarter-peal in his honour after the service. Joe, who originally worked as a scientist in Malvern, said, “I have had a wonderful time in Bewdley. I have enjoyed getting to know such a wide variety of people – we leave with so many good memories.”
