MISSION TO PERU - Part 3

Lima was the busiest and most tiring part of our trip. The city is grey, damp and 5 of its 8 million population live in pueblos jovenos (shanty towns). Our days were packed with visiting the various missions and church schools situated in the most dirty, povertystricken areas you will find anywhere in the world. The social action projects run by the church and missions included feeding programmes for children, pre-school groups, child healthcare and development work, a centre for disabled children, community building work, and knitting/sewing/handicrafts (which provide a livelihood for the women). At one point we formed a human chain across a steep hillside helping move rocks to clear an area for the community to extend the mission building. Some of the missions/churches, balanced on rocky hillsides in the shanty towns, were very much ‘work in progress’, some were mere shacks with sides open to the elements; others were quite well founded but very simple buildings.

We took with us over £5,000 (the result of our fund-raising, including the Art Exhibition held in St Anne’s last June) and 160 finger puppets (made and donated by the charity Teddies for Tragedies). We used the money to purchase footballs and art materials locally, and to pay for the nutritional drinks and food for the feeding programmes in the shanty towns in Lima. The remainder will be used in some of the community projects we visited. The puppets found homes in the schools and the orphanage and will be used by the mobile ‘Play Bus’, which tours round the missions, and by the priest who visits the isolated communities in the Colca Canyon.

I was able to spend some time relaxing before returning to England after a truly remarkable time in Peru. Lyn Fox

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley. It is delivered free monthly to more than 4,600 homes

Another new year, another set of expectations and resolutions that probably won’t make it past the middle of the month – but here’s my first resolution: I’m going to take more notice of people’s talents. I’ll start by saying I reckon last month’s Bridge was one of our best for quite some time, so well done, David, and why don’t you do the magazine for the next few months? Then I can go on holiday somewhere warm (I am writing this in that extreme cold snap just before Christmas) and just read the Bridge online from my laptop, as I sit on some sandy shore. Well, OK, perhaps not, but it was nice to have a break. Particularly as someone in China decided to hack into my emails and send out a lot of invitations to look at another website. Apologies if you were one of the unlucky recipients. Fortunately the Bridge address is quite safe, so there wasn’t any difficulty getting together plenty of interesting things to read this month.

We hear how our shopkeepers see us customers, where to eat this month, and what Transition Food is about; and of course, inside this month is lots of what The Bridge does quietly but efficiently, which is to let us know what’s happening in the town and what we can find to do; even in the iciest weather! So whatever the weather is like during January, may we all have a happy new year.

The New Season at the TIC

We come across some amusing situations at the Tourist Information Centre and our visitors never cease to amaze us. Last summer we had a couple visiting for the first time and who were pleasantly surprised when we told them that admission to the Museum was free. After about an hour and a half they came out saying how much they’d enjoyed it, but asked “what had happened to the cars?” We thought they were perhaps referring to the old fire engine that used to be there, but they kept going on about expecting to see a large collection of cars. It was then that the penny dropped. It wasn’t Bewdley Museum that they thought they were at but Beaulieu National Motor Museum in Hampshire. They were about 150 miles in the wrong direction. Slightly red faced, they looked at each other, smiled and said, “Well, never mind; we thoroughly enjoyed your museum, we’ll save Beaulieu for another day.”

January sees us getting ready for the new season and this year we are introducing a tailor-made ordering service for UK holiday brochures. Request any brochure and we will arrange for them to be sent direct to you. Not only will this be more environmentally friendly, it will also help to reduce our carbon footprint.

So please call in and see us or telephone 01299 404740 or email bewdleytic@wyreforestdc.gov.uk to order your 2011 UK holiday brochures.

Met hodist Church High Street

Services at 10.30 every Sunday

We extend a warm welcome to everyone to join us for any of these services.

Our special weekend when the lift was dedicated was a great success. Many people came from far and near to see what had been done and ride in the new lift. We are very grateful to everyone who called in and also to everyone who kindly donated money to make this project possible. It has made such a difference to all of us.

Unfortunately our last Knit and Natter of the year had to be cancelled (as had many other things) due to the bad weather. However we will be having our Christmas celebrations at the January meeting so no-one will have missed out.

Lions Duck Race 1 January 2011

Community News

Just a reminder about the Lions Annual Duck Race taking place on New Year’s Day in Bewdley. Hiring a duck costs £2 and registration is a further £1. Registration starts at 10 a.m. Please register early to avoid large queues and to ensure a prompt midday throw-in. As with last year home-made ducks are welcome and eligible for the ‘Best Dressed Duck’ Competition, but will not be registered for the Race on the river unless they are completely bio-degradable. Please try not to make ducks from polystyrene and plastic bottles. The Lions know our environmentally conscious youngsters understand the importance of keeping our river clean. The Wyre Forest Canoe Club manages to rescue most of the yellow plastic ducks. The Lions want as many entries as possible as the more money raised the more funds are available to support good causes. This year a major project has been supporting the Wyre Forest Talking Newspaper in its change to digital format. Come along on New Year’s Day. Enjoy yourselves and help us to help others.

Water Too easily taken for granted

Drinking water needs to be clean – sometimes easier said than done. South Wales rivers used to be black from washing the coal. (Was the Severn below Ironbridge any better, a hundred years ago?) Then someone found that good old starch could be used to help settling muck out of dirty water. Starches, tweaked a bit, are still used to do the same job. Fancier modern variants of starch do an even better job. These materials are used on river water to get the mud out, before the water goes into our pipes. And on the subject of dirty rivers: Brummies in exile - remember the River Tame? I’m told there was an old, grimly accurate, joke: “What’s the difference between the River Tame and a new penny?” ‘Fraid my penny hasn’t dropped yet. Any ideas? Questions, Questions – and answers! In the last month, I have helped a pensioner challenge her tax bill, a single mum calculate whether she can afford to go back to work, an employee challenge his company’s attempt to halve the hours he worked, a man threatened with homelessness access help and support from the army veteran’s association, SSAFA, and a bereaved husband deal with the forms he had to complete. I am not some kind of super-charged social worker but a volunteer at Wyre Forest Citizens Advice and this is just a small sample of the problems, which people bring to their offices in Kidderminster, Stourport and Bewdley every day.

When I offered my services as a volunteer just over a year ago, it was with some trepidation – I knew next to nothing about benefits, employment law, housing or dealing with debt and wondered how on earth I would be able to learn it all. I quickly found out that I don’t necessarily need to: each office has on-line access to an exhaustive database, which either gives the answers to all these problems, and many thousands more, or helps me work out where they can be found. Nor I am expected to solve all these problems alone: trained and experienced supervisors are on hand to provide signposts and fill in the gaps in my knowledge, as are my fellow volunteers – most of whom have a lot more experience than me. A year in, I can honestly say it is one of the most satisfying and enjoyable things I have ever done. Helping people work out how to solve what, to them, seem intractable problems is immensely rewarding while the sheer variety of issues I have to deal with in each session is exhilarating, and certainly keeps my brain in working order. There are regular social events like the annual lunch, taking place next year, and quiz nights. We might have to add matchmaking to our services as two of our volunteers have just got married.

CAB is always on the look-out for new volunteers and, because we try to help as many people as we can, our workload is expanding. We are particularly keen to have new people join us at the moment both as trainee advisors and also to help with administration and reception duties. Volunteers should be able to work at least six hours a week, although the times and locations are flexible. We welcome people of all ages, backgrounds and experience.

Heather Connon

If you are interested in finding out more, contact us by e mail bureau@wyreforestcab.cabnet.org.uk or check out the volunteers section of the CAB website, www.citizensadvice.org.uk. or telephone 01562 60194 where you will find more information about the kind of things you could do. Come along on Saturday 8th January to Uncllys Farm from 11am-12.30 and discover the ancient custom of Wassailing. This is an ancient custom to celebrate the fertility of the fruit trees, ensuring a good crop of apples for next year's harvest. Wassail songs are sung and cider poured onto the roots, warm cider is drunk and toast soaked in cider will be placed on the branches for the Robin. The event is free to come along to and you can buy tea and cakes as well as Uncllys's own sausages! Like to know more and for directions, then please ring Emma on 01299 488083.

Help The Heroes

It’s official: Arty is a qualified Guide Dog

Since hearing officially of Arty’s qualification, I have had the pleasure of chatting to Gill, Arty’s owner. He is living on the Isle of Wight, taking Gill to work, getting to know Pippa, Gill’s retired dog and digging up Ryde beach! Arty is Gill’s fourth guide dog and has settled well. When the dogs have been placed, some owners change the dog’s name and a B now starts his name, so before long he will be used to Bart!

The Hall Committee would like to say a big thanks to all those who made the recent event at the Pound Green and Button Oak Community Hall a big success. Thanks to the very generous prizes donated by local business and the generosity of those who came to the event, we were able to give the Mayor of Bewdley a cheque of £840 to Help The Heroes. This is the second time the Committee has raised funds for our troops giving a total of over £2000. The businesses were: Abacus, Button Oak Pub, Frankie and Benny's, Bailiff’s House, Harbour Inn, Running Horse, Severn Valley Railway and Wetherspoon of Bewdley.

Gill is totally blind and I found it very humbling when she thanked me for all I had done walking Arty, and amazing that, at two years old, he was giving someone the ability to live an independent life. Now Frazzle will be over a year old in January and I must prepare myself for her move into formal training. She continues to be a pleasure to have and I know that many of you will miss her too. I’m hopeful that she will adapt to her new routine well and of course become a qualified guide dog. My thoughts occasionally turn to puppy number 3 - this puppy walking is addictive. I wish everyone good health and happiness for 2011. Gabi Wootton

Present Problems an d Solutio ns

So, Christmas is over and you may be wondering what to do with those plants that arrived as presents and now may be looking a bit sad. Amar yllis Place the potted bulb in a warm place with direct light; the ideal temperature is 15 to 16 degrees C. Water sparingly until the stem appears, then gradually water more until flowers appear in 7-10 weeks. After the amaryllis has stopped flowering, cut the old flowers from the stem and when the stem starts to sag, cut it back to the top of the bulb. Continue to water and fertilize as normal through the summer, allowing the leaves to fully develop and grow. When the leaves begin to yellow, cut them back to about 2 inches from the top of the bulb and then remove from the soil. Clean the bulb and place it in a cool (5-10 deg C), dark place for a minimum of 6 weeks before replanting. Po insettia Examine the soil daily, and when the surface is dry to the touch, water the soil until it runs freely from the drainage hole in the container. If a saucer is used, discard the water that collects, so as not to leave the plant standing in water. A wilted Poinsettia plant may drop its leaves prematurely, so check the soil frequently. Plants exposed to high light and low humidity require more frequent watering. If wilting does occur, immediately water and 5 minutes later water again. Place your plant near a sunny window, preferably not north but where it will have the best of day light. Do not let any part of the plant touch the cold glass as this may injure it. To keep the plant in flower, maintain at a temperature of 10 to 20 degrees C during the daylight hours and move it to a cooler place at night. Root rot problems are more prevalent at low temperatures so avoid going below 10 degrees C. Keep away from hot or cold drafts, which may cause premature leaf drop.

Double-glazing for £5....It needn’t cost the earth.

My firm belief is that it is down to us all to do what we can about global warming and not leave it to “them” whoever they are. Hopefully this corner will become a place we can explore together practical things that we can all do here in Bewdley.

Let’s start by saving energy (and money) in our homes. Quickest payback comes from things like sealing gaps between floor and skirting, jacket for hot tank, insulation for main hot pipes and draught proofing. Depending on your starting point these could pay for themselves within one year and floor insulation, cavity wall insulation and loft insulation would be not far behind.

Typically 10% of heat lost from homes is via windows. Single glazing leaks heat faster than any other building material in normal use: add draughts round windows and we can soon beat 10%. However replacement double-glazing costs a lot and will take years to pay for itself. If you live in a rented or listed building, this limits your options considerably. Have you considered double glazing film from about £5 per window? It looks very like cling-film and is fixed in place using double sided tape. The wrinkles are removed by warming with a hair dryer. Fit it onto any clean, dry surface, dealing with each opening section separately, unless you are absolutely sure that there is adequate ventilation elsewhere for gas fires, boilers, etc. A number of different brands are available: try local shops first, DIY stores (e.g. Screwfix, Wikinson and Wickes) or online. Next month find out here about Transition Bewdley and the volunteers who will soon be ready to meet with you, to help you calculate and compare your carbon footprint and to explore ways of lowering your energy use.

If you have any comments, suggestions, etc for future articles, please write to the Green Corner at the Bridge.

Mystery Diner

Built in 1610, and nestling in the heart of High Street in Bewdley, is the fantastic Bailiff’s House. What a transformation from a 'pub' to an exquisite 'Bistro'! The property is now an elegant sophisticated place to eat, and to enjoy the company of your friends.

We were escorted up the narrow, low-roofed staircase to the superbly decorated and transformed, very busy and full restaurant to our table, where drinks were served, overlooking the High Street, in this quaint old town.

The menu, from Soup, Scallops, Risotto or fish dishes, was beautifully presented, and my main course of Venison with rosemary infused potatoes and parsnips, was in a class of its own. My fellow diners also enjoyed a Seafood platter, a superbly cooked 28 day old dry aged Fillet Steak, while my final guest indulged in the Guinea Fowl. The desserts were of equal standards, including Bread and Butter pudding, Creme Brulee and a very tempting Chocolate Torte. The usual cheese and biscuits, coffee and tea followed.

This place has really changed, and all for the best. The eye for detail from the stone blasted brick work, and fine carvings to the exposed wood work of this fine 17th century building, beautifully fitted out with natural rush matting, and very modern lighting, all adds to the joy even if you only pop in for a drink on your way home, or a quick drink on a cold frosty lunchtime They also do a Sunday Lunch menu, with the traditional Roast Beef or Lamb, so l think that when we get the festivities over, another visit in January is on the cards, with a long walk along our river walks afterwards. ROCK PATHFINDERS

Free guided walks along our footpaths and bridleways taking 2-3 hours, off the roads and into the countryside. Sunday 9th January starting at 10am to 12.30 From Astley Church OS reference 787676 Everyone Welcome

The phone in the shop needed attention from BT. I rang them and of course, I was put on hold.

As I waited, Marjorie popped in for the flowers for All Saint’s church. She took them, we chatted about her news and she went. Greensleeves played in my right ear. The disembodied voice told me several times that my call was important to them. A man came in wanting to read our gas meter. “We haven’t got gas here, let alone a gas meter”, I told him. He went too. Greensleeves changed to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. They still thought my call was important, though obviously not important enough to do anything about it. My mother-in-law came in to ask if I wanted anything from Sainsbury’s while she was there. I wrote a list and she went. Anthea came in about a dog needing a home. “Not me” I told her. As she went out, I gently replaced the receiver. Another time, perhaps. Cat from Bewdley Blooms

What’s Going On?

St Anne’s Church in the centre of the town has been shrouded in scaffolding for over two months now. So what’s going on up there?

“More than we expected, is the answer to that one,” says the rector, Rev Keith James. “All this year we have been in the process of making sure the church had a “dry hat and boots“ by improving the gutters and drains, pigeon proofing all its ledges and checking the roof. Unfortunately when the workmen started the last bit of the process they discovered that the tower roof has been leaking for years and needs replacing. It’s taking every penny the church has saved but we know it has to be done.”

Specialist workmen, hidden behind the parapet, have been replacing disintegrating timbers with new English oak and ensuring that no water can get in anywhere.

Robert Smith, a member of the committee overseeing the work, said “It’s a particularly tricky job because of the church’s unusual position. It forms a sort of roundabout in the town and traffic goes all round us; the workmen have to allow for that. But we’re hoping to have everything done and the scaffolding down soon after Christmas.”

So we can all be sure that the Christmas star that goes up on the tower every year, will be shining down Load Street next year too.

VIEW FROM THE REDTHORNE NUMBER 8

I spent a happy afternoon toiling over a hot hob in my eyrie last month. The reason: to prepare a dish for the Transition Food Group meeting at the Baptist church. My beef rendang and spiced rice – a classic Malaysian dish taught to me by a chef on Langkawi Island a few years back – wasn’t really appropriate, as the Transition group is about promoting localisation. It is a tender beef dish with masses of spices and coconut; hardly local fare. But I did at least buy the excellent braising steak from Lickhill Farm Meats – cheaper than the supermarkets and twice as delicious. The evenings are just getting going for the food group, run by Sara Hirst and Gill Holland and I hope they are going to become part of the monthly calendar for Bewdley food lovers. Everyone brings along a home-made dish and has the opportunity to listen to a talk and discuss food matters. On this occasion it was a Friends of the Earth discussion about the evils of destructive farming in South America by Steve Tonry. I can’t say it exactly made me feel like eating, so I’m glad we filled up beforehand, but it was certainly thought-provoking.

The talk at the December meeting was on a subject closer to home – “the Apple and Cherry Orchards of the Wyre Forest” by John Iles of the Wyre Community Land Trust. What is really special about the evening, though, is the chance to share food with other Bewdley residents. Local angler and wild woman, Jo Bloom brought her home smoker and some mackerel – clearly not local either – and smoked them for us there and then. I took the leftovers home with me; they were so delicious. There were also a range of vegetarian and meat dishes, salads and savories and special cakes and cookies. As a confirmed foodie, I love things like this but I reckon anybody would. You don’t have to be adventurous with your cooking, just keen on eating local produce, so do come down to the next one and bring something tasty to show off your culinary skills. For further information, please contact Sara Hirst: Tel: 07771 538459 or Email: sarady12@yahoo.co.uk

Women’s Section Royal British Legion Did you know that in Bewdley, as well as the Royal British Legion, we have a very active Women’s Section? We are a small group of committed women who work to raise funds to support the families of our brave troops past and present, whilst the main British Legion concentrate on the service men and women. As regrettably the need for this support is growing rapidly, we need to raise more money. To do this we need you to come and join us. You will see from the photograph that we are a happy group. We work hard but have a lot of fun, raising money and participating in social events. At all times our motto Service not Self is upheld. This photo was taken at the County Conference last month, when we again won three cups; one being the “Sands cup” for the highest financial contribution to national schemes. In addition our youngest member, Janine Albert Styles was awarded the Novice Standard Bearers cup, carrying on a proud family tradition. Another of our members, Theresa Lyes, has been appointed the County Standard Bearer, a very great honour. As you can see we are a very active group. Please think about joining us; we meet at The Black Boy Hotel BEWDLEY on the first Wednesday of each month starting at 7.30pm JUST COME or if you would like a chat ring Hazel 01299 403800 or Anne 01299 402204

Tin Tabernacles

Community News

Round the country you can find many anonymous corrugated iron buildings known as ‘Tin Tabernacles’. A hundred years later, these secretive places should have decayed out of existence. Between 1860 and the early 20th century, the rapid increase in iron, coal and lead mining resulted in vast numbers of people moving to remote corners of the land. These sudden new communities found themselves without a church. The Anglican Church was loosing its grip on the worshipping public due to the spread of non-conformist movements such as Methodism and Wesleyanism. Their medieval churches, built upon medieval geography, often left them out of the reach of the communities they had hoped to serve.

Therefore, the demand for cheap, transportable, temporary structures was immense. Step forward the recently invented (1828) ‘Corrugation and Galvanization of Iron’ by British engineer Henry Robinson Palmer. The material’s increased strength and stability meant that around a timber frame, buildings of any size from a garden shed to a cathedral could be ordered from a catalogue, prefabricated, flat-packed and shipped anywhere in the world. Dubbed ‘Tin Tabernacles’ by the mocking ecclesiastical establishment, the term has outlived most of the buildings themselves. The majority in the UK was designed to last only as long as the local supply of ore, or until a permanent chapel could be built. The surviving few exist on borrowed time. Those that have, are mainly still in religious use, although the vast majority stand derelict, perched precariously between structural condemnation and demolition.

In Button Oak we have our own “Tin Tabernacle”, and supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, on January 18th, a duo, Trevor Moss and Hannah-Louise are giving a folk concert as part of their nationwide Tin Tabernacle tour.

New course on sheep keeping for existing and potential small holders

For people who want to look into owning a small holding or those who want to gain more experience, a new series of courses is available. The first is an introduction to sheep keeping on the 25th February at Uncllys Farm, Bewdley. The course is free being subsidised by the Grow with Wyre Lottery Project and hold a £10 booking fee. Full details are available from Emma Bogaard on 01299 488083 email emma@wyreclt.org.uk . The course is being run by Mark Cleaver, a local farm manager who has extensive experience in managing livestock and nature conservation. “This course is ideal for anyone who would like to find out more about looking after and checking livestock” said Mark. “More courses that cover cattle and pigs are being held later in the year. The course includes information on the legal and moral duties of livestock keepers, codes of practice, key welfare issues and practical ways to monitor animal health.” Wyre Community Land Trust is based at a working farm and supports land owners, small holders and farmers through training, practical help and the loan of tools and equipment. It provides a wide range of accredited courses available for both land owners and volunteers which are subsidised, mainly through the Heritage Lottery Fund. These include sustainable woodland management, livestock welfare, fruit pressing and cider making.

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 6TH DECEMBER 2010

Royal Wedding The Council felt that they should encourage everyone in the town to celebrate the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton on Friday 29th April, which has been declared a national Bank Holiday. They wished to involve all the main voluntary and sporting organisations and groups plus local businesses in putting on some form of celebration of the event. Anyone with ideas please to get in contact with the Town Clerk. Parking Review Councillors agreed to participate in a further (phase II) review by Wyre Forest District Council of car parking charges including season tickets for the car parks in Load Street, Dog Lane and Gardners’ Meadow. This would start before Christmas. Civic Awards 2010/11 The Council confirmed the decision of the Civic Awards Panel which had met and selected four winners from those individuals who had been nominated by members of the public for having given outstanding service in a voluntary capacity to the community of Bewdley. Polling Stations The District Council had carried out a review of polling places throughout Wyre Forest. Town Councillors were pleased to note that the three polling stations at St George’s Hall, St Anne’s Primary School and Wribbenhall Parish Rooms were unaffected by any changes.

Christmas Lights The Mayor thanked everyone involved in the successful Christmas Lights switch on and fair on Saturday 27th November, which had attracted large numbers of people and particularly the Christmas Lights Committee for organising the event itself, the Bewdley Rotary Club for supplying the Christmas tree by the church and D&G Electricians of Kidderminster for having put up the street lights including some new “feature” lights, which had been financed by the Town Council. Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall are:

on Mondays (except where indicated) at 7.30pm are: 4th January (Tuesday), 7th February, 7th March, 4th April and 3rd May (Tuesday). The Annual Town Meeting (of the electorate) will take place on Monday 18th April 2011.

Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. They are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk. TOWN COUNCIL NEWS IS PRODUCED AND PUBLISHED BY BEWDLEY TOWN COUNCIL

Winter conditions As I write, we are nearing the end of a week of exceptionally cold weather, and these photo were taken early December. A seasoned rower told me that in 27 years he has not seen the river like this, and, unsurprisingly, rowing is suspended until the river melts! We hear stories of ice-fairs on frozen rivers, but until this year I had found this a difficult scenario to imagine. Now here, opposite our club steps, the water is frozen so that the birds can walk about on it; and ice-floes cover the surface of the water. It is a beautiful and dramatic sight, but historically icebergs and boats don’t mix! Melanie Gunn

Tails of a Veterinary Practice Life at Riverside Vets as seen by Gavin the practice cat.

Hello all and a Happy New Year to everyone.

This month, it had been brought to the attention of my humans that the road along Severn Side South has become somewhat dirtied with dog faeces. As veterinary professionals my humans all support keeping our streets clean and free of dog mess. They can often be seen picking up any mess from in front of the practice and in the archway at the side, but cannot be out and about, up and down the road as they are busy working hard (I patrol downstairs occasionally to make sure of this). I have arranged that my humans will have some poo bags available free of charge in the practice reception for anyone who gets caught out by their dog and needs one. Please feel free to pop into the practice and ask if you need a poo bag when you are out on a walk with your four legged friends.

Being a cat, I myself have no need of such things, as I have a litter tray and have my humans well trained to clean it out twice a day. More from me again next month,

Gavin

January in the forest

Our wild neighbours have a hard time of it in this harsh weather. Mice and squirrels go in for storing food in a small way, but otherwise animals have to adopt different strategies for survival in a season which offers only short days and low temperatures. Some, such as bats, toads, dormice and hedgehogs hibernate, taking a lesson from the deciduous trees. Life processes slow right down: a hibernating hedgehog takes only one breath every few minutes and its body temperature drops from 35 to 10 degrees centigrade. The body fat from the good days of autumn is used up to provide the energy necessary to stay alive. Warm days can be a problem rather than a help, causing the animal to wake and therefore have to find food. It’s a risky business – there may not be enough to replace the energy burnt up in the search. The creatures who stay awake have to be

pretty resourceful, perhaps changing their diet or behaviour. Squirrels build winter dreys close to the trunks of trees to withstand storms and cuddle together inside for warmth. Rabbits will dig up roots and

eat tree bark when other food is scarce, and I have seen clumps of ivy on a fallen branch completely stripped of leaves by deer. The fox is ever ready to take advantage of a lapse in chicken coop security or a discarded takeaway! Wood pigeons may form large flocks in their search for food in the countryside or take a more individual approach and concentrate on the garden birdfeeders. This leads me to make a seasonal request on behalf of our native birds: putting out food and water will make a big difference to their chance of survival this winter. If you can provide a variety of birdfood in your garden you will attract a variety of birds: fatballs (or homemade bird cake) and mealworms will bring robins, peanuts are a favourite with woodpeckers, niger seed is popular with goldfinches, sunflower seeds seem to attract them all but are a particular favourite with nuthatches in my garden. Birds not only need water to drink but also to bathe in so that their feathers are kept in good condition for flight and insulation. That brings me to the birds who have the best plan of all – taking a holiday in the Southern Hemisphere! If you’re not that lucky you still have the forest to enjoy. Wrap up warm!
