Gardening for June
If May turns out to be as dry as April, we will need to consider water conservation next month, but in the meantime here is yet another list of jobs to keep at through June. For your borders, it’s time to plant out hardened off annuals, deadheading to encourage more flowers, with sweet peas regular cutting has the same effect. It’s also time to dig up bulbs after their foliage has died down and start to plant out autumn flowering varieties. Keep weeds under control by continuing with hoeing. As ever lawns need cutting, moss and thatch raking out and if looking sad feeding with a nitrogen rich dressing. Pruning and trimming keeps new shoots under control and helps to shape hedges and shrubs. If you have fruit in the garden propagate strawberries from runners, thin out apple, pear and plum to produce fewer but larger fruits, keep well watered while the fruit is forming. Ponds, remove as far as possible blanket weed, plant out new water lilies, review fish levels and re-stock. Vegetables, time to plant out just about everything, feed, water, pest control, stake where necessary and in some cases harvest the early crops. Stuart Williams
VIEW FROM THE REDTHORNE - May report
During the Discover Bewdley weekend, it was my honour to host the first ever Bewdley Salad Challenge. The unusual yet hugely successful concept was suggested by Phil Brook from the Deli@Bewdley and was co-sponsored by him and Tony Thompson at the Farm Shop on Dog Lane. It was organised by Phil and Tony, Chris Griffin of Discover Bewdley, Peter Miller of the Bewdley Development Trust and myself. I spent three hours that morning scraping and steaming dozens of Jersey Royal potatoes, crisping bacon and blanching beans, asparagus, purple sprouting broccoli and peas. And why? Well, at three pm on a sunny but windy bank holiday, Mark Flello of Grannystap Tea Room, Matt Knott of The Bailiffs House, Zac Birchley of The Angry Chef restaurant at the Mug House and Emma Passey of the Hop Pole demonstrated their salad inventing skills in front of a large crowd of Bewdley visitors. They had just two minutes to choose their ingredients from a great display provided by the Farm Shop and The Deli. Then, in a 15 minute race, the four superb chefs demonstrated just how good food can be in Bewdley. The event judge, Mark Garnier MP was suitably impressed, as were the many people who tried the results. Plenty of local ingredients were used including home smoked local duck, reductions of local rhubarb and apple juice from Son and Styles, asparagus and tomatoes from Whitley and Bewdley Blue from Lightwood Cheeses. All four chefs showed extraordinary innovation and taste, and the winning salad, using a chicken and pork terrine, chive flowers, local asparagus and red onions is already available on the menu at the Hop Pole. Congratulations to Emma Passey of the Hop Pole and to all the chefs who competed. I’m hoping that all these recipes will find their way onto the menus of these restaurants and that next year’s challenge will have even more contestants. I suspect that this may be the only event of its kind in the world and Bewdley should be proud of it. Neville Farmer
Editorial
The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley.
It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month. Bewdley has shown itself off to great advantage recently. Our Discover Bewdley bank holiday weekend last month was blessed with wonderful weather and the streets were humming with people from all over the West Midlands, not to mention our guests from the twin town of Vellmar. Some were snakes and laddering round the town, some were being more decorously guided on tours of our ancient past, plenty were just mooching. Of course the riverside was being well patronised by people trying out Italian delicacies, original salads or just good old fish and chips and ice cream, and in Jubilee Park half the town sprawled on blankets to drink champagne – or less classy beverages – and listen to our super new Town Band. So thanks to Catherine and William for the extra day, and I hope you enjoy Gary’s great photos.
Oh, and you know that thing where I come up to you and you fail to see me in time so I can grab you to ask you to write something for the magazine? Well, I hope you enjoy trying to spot the hapless victims and their delightful articles in this month’s Bridge. And as there’s a lot going on this month too, I am donning a false moustache to leap out at you ready for next month. Don’t say you weren’t warned! Margaret

Land Clubs
Recently, the Civic Society had a very interesting talk on "Land Clubs" in Kidderminster. The next day, I discovered we'd had one here.
A land club was formed, usually, by two or three men who'd bought a piece of land and laid it out as building plots. A club was formed with the number of members matching the number of plots. They often met at a pub and paid ten shillings a month until they'd paid for their plot. What and when they built was up to the buyer. The aim of such a club was to give ordinary people the opportunity of being owner-occupiers, an aim not always achieved.
The Wribbenhall Land Society was formed in 1900 after Thomas Joseph Bullus, Henry Edward Usher Watkins, John Fehrenbach and George Augustus Weston bought the land by All Saints' Church. Plots fronted Spencer Avenue and what would later be called Wheatcroft Avenue. Also included was the land on which 72-92 Kidderminster Road now stand. The original purchasers included a carpenter, a postman, a grocer and a wool sorter. Some of the earliest properties built are almost certainly on plots purchased by builders. Some of the last properties built are probably on plots used as an investment, not as a means of getting a home of your own. The information I have at present is a bit patchy and I would love to fill in the gaps, so if anyone can help me, please get in touch - tel:400691.

Not Quite Telford
As a member of Wyre Forest Lace Makers (3rd Tuesday in the month @ Lickhill Community Centre 7.30 to 9.30), we are creating a canal scene in Bobbin Lace.
I was asked to create the bridge. I left with a piece of paper as big as the canal! How to begin, what materials? I start with a prototype cut to size. I sew it together, transfer it to graph paper, work out the stitch pattern.
Now to begin. The job needs large bobbins to hold the thread which I make from my old bed headboard on a lathe. Armed and ready, I lace the bridge. Pieces all made, now to erect the bridge. I paint, wire, stitch and stick .
At last! The bridge is standing! A little slower than Thomas Telford, but it’s my bridge. Yes, The bridge has landed!

For several weeks now the river has been alive with beautifully maintained wooden boats as optimistic and enthusiastic crews learn or revise the art of rowing. Teams from the town’s bars, sporting and social clubs have grouped together in fours‌..men, ladies or mixed, with a view to winning the annual race; this year to take place on Saturday June 4th. There are 32 men’s and 32 ladies’ crews, and 16 mixed, making a grand total of 80 hopeful boats on the day. Some crews have started from scratch, and some have been pipped at the post before and come back to try again. Either way, the emphasis is on FUN, and the aim is that a good day will be had by all. Do come and support the people you know who are rowing. I believe everyone in town must know at least one person in a boat, so raise a glass (Rowing Club bar prices are attractively low!) to the success of their crew. Melanie Gunn

A Lawn or Something Better?
If you are in charge of a bowling green or a cricket square, turn over or I shall upset you! However, if you do battle with the average patch of weeds and grass, have you considered relaxing your mowing regime to allow part or all of it to become a wildflower haven? It will look good, provide food and shelter for wildlife and should save you money, time and energy.
If you take a wildflower meadow and start mowing it as if it were a lawn, then in a season or two it will turn into a boring, passable lawn. Please do not try this!
Conversely, take a lawn, adopt the right mowing regime and this alone could be enough to give you a beautiful and valuable wildflower mini-meadow after a season or two. A common suggestion is to mow in just March and late July. However you could vary this to encourage different species (e.g. delaying the second cut until after later species have set seeds, e.g. September). Do not use any chemicals: fertiliser is not wanted and you will now have wildflowers, not weeds. Objections follow:
Q Won’t long matted grass just looks a mess and become impossible to mow? A Only if you leave your cutting longer than suggested (and do try not to leave old bikes etc in it!) Q Won’t it just look as if I am lazy? A Show that it is intentional by mowing path(s) or perimeter strip(s) to keep it looking tidy. Q Where will the wildflowers come from? A If you are worried that natural seeding etc will take too long, give nature a hand by spot planting plugs or scattering seed but do not take plants from the wild of course.
Q Does it work? A Some favourite spots in our garden: a shady corner now has wood anemone, stitchwort and red campion every spring, an awkward bank has bobbing snakeshead fritillaries and our bluebells fight it out with cowslips. There is still room for football, but foxes or pheasants are not guaranteed. Brian Smith
Bewdley and District Horticultural Society On Wednesday, 6th July
we shall be having a Summer Social with Strawberry, scones, quiz and Mini Summer Show. We meet at Wribbenhall Community Centre, Shaw Hedge Road, Bewdley, at 7.40p.m. for 7.45 p.m. start We look forward to seeing you: you don`t need to be a member to come to any of our meetings. Entrance is £1 50p.

J une in the forest
Most people hate wasps. While it isn’t surprising, it isn’t really fair either. Chris Packham (of “The Really Wild Show”, “Springwatch” and other TV wildlife programmes) has championed the wasp, pointing out their beneficial qualities. They are carnivorous, although the adults like nectar and fruit, and so help to control pests in the garden. The social wasps build beautiful “paper” nests with delicate colour banding out of chewed up wood pulp. They never swarm but at the end of the summer the colonies begin to break up and the adult wasps can then be a nuisance with their liking for our picnics. However, the arrival of cold weather kills off all but the mated queens, which will hibernate until the spring.
Norman Hickin in “The Natural History of an English Forest” drew attention to a fascinating relationship between wasps and the figwort plant, which is common in the forest’s hedgerows. Their flowers are purplish-brown and are shaped to receive the wasps’ mouthparts, which aren’t adapted to gathering nectar from most flowers. When wasps feed on the nectar, they fertilise the flowers in the process and because of their “special relationship” are almost exclusively responsible for figwort
pollination. There are 27 species of “true wasps” in Britain, 40 species of spider-hunting wasps, and 230 other “digger wasps”. Their distant relatives, the wood wasps, are often seen in the Wyre Forest. Impressive and even scary-looking, they are 4cm or more in length with a long ovipositor on their tails which could be mistaken for a sting but is actually used to lay eggs in wood. When not dodging the wasps you may like to join some of the events at the Wyre Forest Discovery Centre at Callow Hill, Bewdley DY14 9XQ. Unless otherwise stated, all children’s events • are aimed at 5 to 11 year olds. Bewdley Town Council ANNUAL REPORT 2010/11
Bewdley Town Council
ANNUAL REPORT
BEWDLEY TOWN COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORT 2010/11 The Town Council 1 Bewdley Town Council was created in 1974 following the reorganisation of local government in England & Wales before which it had been a Borough within Worcestershire. It now forms part of Wyre Forest District Council which is one of six District Councils within Worcestershire. 2 Bewdley Town Council has 13 Town Councillors all of whom are elected for a term of four years. The Town Council Elections took place on 27th May (delayed by three weeks because of the General Election) and hence this report covers the first year of that Council. 3 For voting purposes, Bewdley is divided into three Wards which are Bewdley West (four Councillors) and Bewdley East (4 Councillors) on the west side of the river and Wribbenhall (5 Councillors) on the east side. 4. As a result of the 2010 Elections, five new Councillors were elected to the Council. These were Cllr Mrs Carol Gittins who has previously served as a Town Councillor and been Mayor (2001/02) and Cllrs Mrs Linda Candlin, Mrs Anne Cox, Mrs Jenny Greener and Mr John Latham. 5. Officially the Town Council year began its work on 4th June with the Annual Meeting of the Town Council. This is also known as “Mayor-Making” when the Town Councillors elect a Mayor, a Deputy, the Town Council’s Committees and Advisory Groups, and representatives to outside bodies. During this last year the Mayor has been Cllr Paul Gittins and the Deputy Mayor has been Cllr Mrs Liz Davies. 6. On 1st February, Cllr Stephen Clee resigned from the Town Council which necessitated a by-election which was held on 5th May being the same date as the District Council Elections. 7. The names and contact details of all the Town Councillors can be obtained from the Town Clerk’s Office or from the website www.bewdley.org.uk 8. The Town Council and Planning Committees meet once a month. They generally do so on the first Monday of each month unless that happens to be a Bank Holiday in which case they take place a day later. 9. The attendance record for the 12 meetings of the Town Councillors is set out below

In addition it has representatives on the following organisations: County Association of Local Councils Executive (CALC), Citizens Advice Bureau, Emergency Planning Group, Fair Trade Committee, Parish Games, Worcestershire Assembly, Wyre Forest Parish Forum and Wyre Forest Parish Games. Staffing Matters 12.Mr Stephen Inman is Town Clerk and has now completed his second year in that role. The Mayor’s PA is Mrs Karen Raine and the Treasurer is Mr David Moore. All three are part time employees. The payroll function for the Council is carried out by the District Council. None of the positions are pensionable. Civic Matters 13.Civic Ceremonies involving the Town Council comprise: St. George’s Day Parade in April, Annual Meeting of the Town Council (Mayor-Making) in May, Mayor’s Sunday in June, Bewdley Festival Service in October and two Remembrance Services in November with a morning service at St. Anne’s and an afternoon service at All Saints. 14.The Mayor undertook a full and extensive programme of engagements during the year.
Bewdley Town Council
ANNUAL REPORT
15.Amongst its most treasured and valuable possessions are the Town Council’s two maces. They are now 300 years old and are held on important civic occasions by two of the Council’s Macebearers standing immediately next to the Mayor 16. In September the Mayor’s Parlour and Guildhall were once again opened to the public for Heritage Open Day with several Town Councillors taking part. Civic Awards 17.It has become a tradition in Bewdley for the Town Council to organise the “civic awards” and they have now done so since 2000. Nominations for awards are invited during the autumn from which the winners are selected by the Civic Awards Panel. This year there were four successful nominations who accepted their silver engraved medals and certificates at a ceremony on 4th March. They were husband and wife team Robert and Alison Williams who were recognised for their work with the Scouts & Guides, John Genner for his work with the Red Cross and Stella Baldwin also for her work with the Red Cross and also with NHS patients groups. Town Maintenance 18.The Town Council pays for the servicing of the Town Clock on St. Anne’s Church Tower. 19.The Town Council owns nine bus shelters. All these bus shelters have been provided from funds of Worcestershire County Council but are maintained and kept in repair by the Town Council. 20.The Town Council at present owns and maintains some 41 seats and benches situated in the town, a significant number of which have been donated in memory of people for whom Bewdley was a special place. 21.The Town Council owns and maintains 7 lifebelts on Severnside North, Severnside South and in Wribbenhall which are checked on a regular basis. Last summer regrettably there was evidence of wanton misuse of three of the lifebelts by throwing them into the river. Two were not recovered so had to be replaced at a cost to the taxpayer. 22.The Town Council owns and maintains 10 street poles in Load Street which are used for Christmas Lights, bunting for the Carnival and Festival and for hanging baskets. It is unfortunate that from time to time these are damaged by vehicles which then necessitates repair. 23.The Town Council manages the events notice board on Beale’s Corner and all organisations in the town are able to advertise on this, subject to liaising with the Town Clerk as to a suitable slot in the diary being available. Due to high demand, it is necessary to limit advertising to a period of one week per event. to run from Sunday to Saturday. Any adverts must also comply with the requirement that they are not too wordy as to cause a distraction for motorists 24.The Town Council has continued to pay the running costs and maintenance of the Wyre Hill Play Area which costs in excess of £4,000 per annum.
Bewdley Town Council
ANNUAL REPORT
25.The condition of Bewdley’s rural footpaths is monitored by the two Footpath Wardens. 26.The condition of Bewdley’s trees is monitored by the two Tree Wardens appointed by the Town Council who regularly comment on planning applications for work to be done on trees in the Town. 27. The Town Council continues to engage Mr Bob Carlyle to act as its Lengthsman. The role of the Lengthsman is to carry out a wide range of minor works mainly in the town centre but also outside. He will for example deal with the removal of overhanging vegetation where it obstructs the pavement or footway or the removal of weeds from the “splitter” islands along the by-pass or the unblocking of grids and gullys from mud and debris. His work has had a beneficial effect on areas of the town that were previously not maintained. The Council had agreed in principle to having the Lengthsman extend his duties so as to provide gritting for the main town centre pavements but this proved not to be necessary when the County Council reviewed its gritting procedures to cover that responsibility. Other Activities - Flowers, Fireworks, Christmas Lights 28.The Town Council owns 10 concrete flower tubs located outside the Guildhall/HSBC and around the top of St. Anne’s Church. They are planted up for the summer and winter seasons. Though repainted in black and gold by the Lengthsman during the year to enhance their appearance, a number of the tubs have become chipped and damaged. 29.The Council made a decision last year that they wished to give greater priority to flower displays and an order for what should be attractive flower planters has been made which should be in place outside the Guildhall and elsewhere for the Discover Bewdley weekend at the end of May. The Town Council provides and pays for the 12 hanging baskets in Load Street and parts of Severnside South. They have been in use for many years and are in need of renewal. The Council therefore has also just placed an order for new baskets which should be in place for the Discover Bewdley weekend. 30.The Town Council currently provides the Christmas Lights which are switched on for a period of about six weeks from late November into the New Year. It pays the cost of installation, maintenance and dismantling at a cost of £3,900 together with the cost of the electricity. The Council invested in 15 new “feature” lights to replace those which are fastened vertically to various lampposts which were beginning to fail and cause electrical problems. Part of the cost was met by a grant from the County Council Economy Group of £1250. 31.The Town Council arranges and pays for the fireworks display which is centred on the Rowing Club and forms part of the Carnival entertainment in June. Town Planning 32.Through its Planning Committee which meets each month, the Town Council maintains an active role in planning matters. All planning applications in Bewdley
Bewdley Town Council
ANNUAL REPORT
are referred by the District Council to the Town Council Planning Committee for its views as statutory consultees. During the calendar year 2010 some 120 applications were considered and recommendations made for either approval or refusal. 33.Many of these applications related to the felling, pruning or crowning of trees within the town centre conservation area which the Committee is always anxious to enhance and protect as a means of maintaining Bewdley as an attractive riverside town. 34.All Planning Committee meetings of the Town Council are open to the public and generally take place (subject to occasional changes) at 6.15pm prior to each Council meeting. Communication with residents 35.The full agenda and minutes of the Town Council and its Committees are available to view on the town’s website at www.bewdley.org,uk. Copies of minutes of all Council and Committee meetings are also available on the three town notice boards situated in the Load Street Car Park, on Load Street outside the Mayor’s Parlour and inside the covered entrance to The Guildhall. They can also be viewed at the Library. 36. The Bridge magazine devotes one page each month to “Town Council News” which includes significant items from these meetings and additional information relevant to people in Bewdley. Quality Status 37.The Town Council retains its Quality Status that was granted for a four-year period from 2008 and which will expire (subject to renewal) in June 2012. Bewdley Community Health & Facilities Group Project 38.The Town Council continues to be actively involved as a member of the Community Health & Facilities Group Project. This involves the redevelopment of the site off Load Street comprising the medical centre, library and St George’s Hall. Planning permission has now been obtained by the Bewdley Development Trust acting in conjunction with the Trustees of St George’s Hall for complete refurbishment the Hall and the replacement of the 1970s extension which would be demolished. Youth Facilities 39.The Town Council continues to support the Youth Café through contributions and activities of individual councillors. It has now been open for two years and is regarded as one of the most successful in the local area with its design, management and workings being used as a basis for similar ventures in other towns. Policing in the Town Centre and Anti-Social behaviour 40.The Town Council continues to be concerned about anti-social behaviour in the
Bewdley Town Council
ANNUAL REPORT
town and is working with the Police and other relevant parties to try to reduce such behaviour. There is also unfortunately evidence of a drug supply in the community and the Town Council urges all authorities to clamp down and eliminate such activity. Councillor representatives regularly attend local PACT meetings and meetings of the Wyre Forest Police Consultative Group. Water & Gas Mains Replacement in Bewdley 41. The difficult task of replacing and renewing gas and water mains along the High Street and Load Street was finished a year ago. Hopefully any similar large scale disruption can be avoided for many years to come. Finances 42.The bulk of the Town Council’s income continues to come from the Precept. This is the sum of money which the Town Council raises from householders in Bewdley. It forms part of the overall Council Tax levied by the County Council, West Mercia Police Authority and the Fire & Rescue Service which is collected on their behalf by Wyre Forest District Council. 43.The Budget Working Group of the Council met on several occasions during the autumn and New Year to discuss what could be afforded and at what cost and made some savings where it could to certain items of expenditure and increased some where it was prudent to do so. Once again when it came to setting the budget there was a view amongst the Working Group and Town Councillors that the amount levied on householders for the Bewdley part of the total Council Tax bill should not be increased. It therefore remains at £21.52 for what will be the third year running as shown in the table below: Year Precept Band D Charge Increase £ £ % 2005/6 53,200 14.44 3.88 2006/7 58,025 15.71 8.80 2007/8 73,760 19.91 26.73 2008/9 77,775 21.05 5.73 2009/10 80,048 21.52 2.23 2010/11 80,399 21.52 0.00 2011/12 80,184 21.52 0.00 44.The Council has continued its policy of building up a reasonable level of reserves given the overall uncertainty about public expenditure and what may be required to be funded form the Town Council in the future which is funded elsewhere at present. 45.For the year 2011/12 the Town Council has agreed to make £6,000.00 worth of grants to local organisations which is a similar figure to the current year. Voluntary and community organisations who would be interested in applying for a grant should make contact with the Town Clerk.

Dear editor, Wouldn’t it be lovely if some of Gary’s gorgeous views of Bewdley could be reproduced on block canvas – no need to frame - and perhaps sold from St. Anne’s? I would certainly like one of the cover-picture on the March edition; it is a gem and the very essence of our lovely town. Onto a less pleasant subject – vile dog poo, plus drifts of cigarette butts everywhere! As a wheelchair user these are my bête-noir. Don’t we have a Street Sweeper in Bewdley any more? I don’t mean that mechanised thingy which doesn’t do the edges and corners properly, nor the narrower pavements and under the benches. We need a good conscientious person again with a cart and broom who would take a pride in what he does to keep Bewdley spruce! Susan Cox

There are about 350 varieties of cherry and many were formerly grown around Bewdley making a significant contribution to the local economy. An attempt is being made to find the varieties of surviving trees. Please bring samples of any cherries you can find. Bewdley Cherry Fair Saturday 25th June, in front of the Town Hall.
Dear Editor, I was so pleased when the little park at the back of St Anne's school was refurbished. It has given great pleasure to my grandsons and me. My boys were delighted with all the new additions, especially the willow tunnels. When we visited last week, it was with dismay we saw that the two trees planted inside the round benches had been snapped off, broken beer bottles smashed on the paths and beer cans thrown down. When I started picking up the broken glass, I was laughed at by several girls who were trying hard to wreck the swinging basket... How very sad that the few try to spoil things for the many young children who enjoy this little oasis of childhood pleasure. The same applies to the Orchard in Bewdley museum. I cannot understand why anyone has to destroy something that has taken hours for someone to create and the broken plaques are a sad sight to see. The children who made them must be heartbroken. Old St Anne’s
Community News
Long before a church stood in its present place, there was a tiny chapel handily positioned on top of an alehouse. As part of the work St Anne’s is undertaking to redevelop the church, they have been burrowing into old records now kept in Worcester. These give us a snapshot of life as it was in Bewdley in previous centuries. For the next few months we will be printing some extracts. This month we go back to the 16th century and the days of Elizabeth 1st: 1569 Pd to the curat or chapleyn in payment of his halfyeres stipend at the feast of St Michell the Archangell in the 10th yere of the sovereign lady the queene £5 10s 1572 Pd unto Rd Bonkenell for a new bucket to the town well……5d 1578 Pd to William Lake for mending the gomestoole………4d (“gomestoole” is another name for a ducking stool) 1589 Paide for ringinge when the Spanniardes shippes were taken in Irelande 15d (this was the Spanish Armada) 1595 Pd for digginge of xxvii loades of stone to pave in the parke lane and at tynkers gate and att Severne Bridge………6s 9d
Frazzle Update
Many of you will know that Frazzle has been rather poorly. The final diagnosis was that she was suffering from stomach lesions. I left her at the Guide Dog's Veterinary Clinic in Leamington, where she spent nine days. The house was not the same and I was constantly asked where, then how she was. She even received a Get Well card! It was good to get her home and to see her regain her strength and appetite. Guide Dogs estimate that each dog from birth to death costs in the region of £50,000. All the money is donated by the public - thank you! Hearing from Arty's owner on the Isle of Wight reminds me what a life changing difference a dog can make to someone visually impaired. (Only 5% of owners are totally blind.) On the 19th April, Frazzle returned to the vet for a further endoscopy. Her stomach is recovering well and hopefully the change of diet will be sufficient to keep her fit and well in the future. Her training, although interrupted, has continued and she is proving a very willing, responsive worker. Her move into formal training has been postponed to ensure that she is fully fit for the intensive work she will undertake at Leamington. It seems likely that she will move on before the end of July. It will be a very difficult day when she is collected, but I look forward to meeting puppy number 3. I know that I will be informed of Frazzle's progress and, if she qualifies, she will be an affectionate, loyal and reliable friend. Many thanks to everyone who has supported Frazzle and me of late. Gabi Wootton p.s. I have received many comments about my last entry. I think the fouling of the streets is no worse; dare I say it seems a little better. However, we must continue to be vigilant. The complications in both children and adults caused by campylobacter are appalling.

Did you know you can now learn basic computer skills free of charge at your local library? It's well worth it. E-mail is used worldwide and if you're confident with it, you can keep in touch with loved ones far away; if you can use an online search engine, you can find a long-lost favourite recipe, relearn how to do blanket stitch or research a subject of interest. As part of the government initiative 'UK Online' you can sign up for online courses in the following: e-mail, using e-mail safely, internet searching, online shopping, using Facebook and basic digital photography. The courses are short and you work at your own pace. All you need to do is fill in a form for us; we can then book your time on the computer and you're ready for off! To find out more, call into the library and talk to a member of staff; we can then arrange a suitable time for you to start! Kay Sanderson
Letter from Cassidy
We have a new member of our family. I have a new human friend to play with and we’re getting on brilliantly. (Although I don’t like being shut out of a room because I’m moulting.) We’re enjoying our walks together, cuddles & even a few sneeky titbits when no-one’s looking. My human friend is a 13year old girl who has now come to stay much to my joy and the cats disgust! Sorry, it’s not a very long letter this month, but off for another chase about now!
Volunteer Livestock Checkers in the Wyre Forest
If you are a regular walker and would like to get involved in conservation, then why not volunteer to be a livestock checker? During the summer months, Dexter cattle are used to help in the restoration of traditional orchards, species rich grassland and heath in and around the Wyre Forest National Nature Reserve. Around 40 cattle graze at over 50 sites in and around the Wyre Forest. New volunteers are needed to help keep a regular check on the cattle during this time, to make sure they are fit and healthy and to check their location. If you think you would like to become a Volunteer Livestock Checker, please contact Mark Cleaver. Free training is provided and there is always be a member of staff on call for support. You do not need experience with animals (although some is preferable), but an interest in nature conservation is essential. People are also needed to check the meadows along Dowles Brook between the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust reserve at Knowles Mill along to Coopers Mill, around the Natural England Office at Lodge Hill, Clows Top, Far Forest and many more sites. Volunteering as a livestock checker is a flexible way to give your time. All you need to do is let us know when you can spare an hour or two and you will be fitted into the rota. Bewdley/Wribbenhall Ladies’ Luncheon Club
In March we had a most interesting historical talk entitled “Born to Rule” by Dianne Mannering. Our April meeting was the AGM, during which officers and committee were confirmed. After a lovely lunch a very successful bring and buy sale was carried out. On 25th May Veronica Collette was speaking on Saudi Arabia. Details of the June meeting can be obtained by ringing 400363. All ladies are welcome to our monthly meetings at the Ramada Hotel.
WRIBBENHALL WI
At the May meeting the president Beryl Bubb welcomed members and sent good wished to Patricia Jones for a speedy recovery after surgery. Plans were made for a visit to Button Bridge gardens and The Staffordshire talk to be given at the Civic Hall Stourport. Painting lessons are being arranged; also knitting and crochet afternoons. Members were unanimous in their condemnation of mega Factory Farms and the closure of libraries and other facilities. Our delegate will vote accordingly at the AGM in Liverpool when these resolutions will be debated. After tea during social time a humorous poem was read by two members about their recent cruising experience. The next meeting at the Elim Church, Dog Lane Bewdley will be on June 13th at 2pm. Items from the Craft Loan Collection will be on display and explained by a member from the Worcestershire Home Economics Committee. Community News
On the evening of 18th April the great and the good of Bewdley congregated at the Guild Hall to give account of the activities of their respective organisations at the Annual Meeting of the Town Council.
In preparing my report I first referred to last year’s, and it struck me how little had changed. Fluctuations in crime trends are very low, some worse, some better. Overall, crime has increased by 55 incidents, which includes a 7.8% increase in violent crime. However anti-social behaviour, criminal damage and non-dwelling burglaries have decreased significantly for the second year running. Recent good news was the conviction of a Worcester criminal for a series of burglaries around Hales Park in October, and the charging of two Kidderminster youths with break-ins to sheds and carriages at Bewdley railway station early this year.
Our establishment of Officers at Bewdley has remained constant since last September. I mentioned in a previous Bridge article that this was as good as it will get. How true that is proving to be.
We have consolidated our community activities, particularly in the schools. Youth PACT and Cop Stop are now regular features at Bewdley School & 6th Form Centre, and PACT meetings are held quarterly at Bewdley Baptist Church. They are advertised on the Town Council notice board at Beale’s Corner, which is back in use having been felled by a blast of hot air in January. We also pick up issues from the town centre PACT boxes, and from incident patterns and crime trends. If a lot of
complaints arise from a particular area, then clearly there is a problem for us to address. The current main issue, which has the support of many in the town, is a drive to introduce 20 mph speed limits within the town centre conservation area. Our CSO’s Jeni & Nicky have been heavily involved in delivering tag rugby to our four primary schools. If you know a pupil at those schools, they can tell you all about it.
Neighbourhood Watch continues to expand steadily, and we are grateful to our co-ordinators for their support. We are moving towards making NHW more self-sufficient and have established links with groups extending from the Teme Valley to Chaddesley Corbett. Criminals are very mobile these days and are active across a wide area.
We target drug users who commit crime and ASB (Antisocial behaviour) and have supported the eviction of two individuals from Wribbenhall. A drugs analyser machine has been utilised as a condition of entry to two town centre licensed premises with the full support of the licensees.
The next few years promise to be a challenging and uncertain time for all of us. We can only speculate on how policing in Bewdley will be affected, but I’m sure that with all the comment in the media you don’t need me to tell you which way the wind of change is blowing. TOWN COUNCIL NEWS
Community News
TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 3RD MAY 2011 Church Clock It’s probably not that well known but responsibility for looking after the clock on St Anne’s Church tower falls upon the Town Council. It is serviced each year but being electric it needs to be re-set manually after any power cuts or after the hour change each spring and autumn. Climbing up into the loft is not the easiest thing to do unless you’re very athletic and it cannot always be done straightaway. The Town Council agreed to purchase a new automatic timekeeping system so, rather like home computers, it can cope with those changes. Hopefully this will ensure perfect accuracy at all times in the future. Bus Service Review During the course of the last few months, the County Council has been conducting a review of bus services and looking at ways to reduce the amount spent on subsidies. There is now a second round of consultation and the Town Council agreed to make representations as to why it would be wrong to cut the 2A service to and from Kidderminster after 6.30pm on weekdays and the 300 service from Kidderminster to Worcestershire Royal Hospital on Sundays. Policing in Bewdley Councillors were concerned to hear about anti-social behaviour and damage to property in the town over the Easter week-end. The Town Clerk was asked to write to the Inspector of Police at Kidderminster to seek assurances that a prompt response could always be given by the Police to such incidents as and when they occurred in the future; there being scepticism that was the case at present. Annual Town Meeting The Annual Town Meeting had taken place on 18th April when members of the public were able to listen to short presentations given by various voluntary and community groups in the town and Town Councillors also gave their reports for the year and answered questions as to their activities. Mayor’s Civic Service The Mayor’s Civic Service at St Anne’s Church is due to take place on Sunday 12th June at 11.00am with a parade to and from the Guildhall involving the Scout & Guide Band. Future Town Council meetings Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall on Mondays (except where indicated) at 7.30pm are: 6th June, 4th July, 1st August and 5th September. Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. They are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk TOWN COUNCIL NEWS IS PRODUCED AND PUBLISHED BY BEWDLEY TOWN COUNCIL

Kathleen Kenworthy and friends
Birthday Girls
St Anne’s Easter celebrations featured an extra reason to celebrate this year. A regular attender at the morning service, Kathleen Kenworthy, had a birthday. Not just any old birthday; it was her hundredth birthday and was an occasion for the choir and congregation to sing some of her favourite music and to join in cakes and congratulations after the service. Another member of St Anne’s congregation with a birthday this month is Muriel Allen. She achieves the splendid age of 95. Born in Malvern she came to Bewdley in 1986 where she has lived ever since, with most of her family in the area. This year is certainly seeing many exciting things for Muriel --- A cousin receiving Maundy money from the Queen, a grandson’s wedding, a great grandson’s christening, a special birthday, and daughter Rosemary and Muriel Allen friend Heather attending a Buckingham Palace Garden Party in recognition of their work with Barnardos and the Special Olympics.
Sky News comes to St Anne’s, Bewdley
St Anne’s Church, Bewdley, made the national news last month when it received a visit from a Sky News team. A report by the National Churches Trust on England’s church buildings had said that 10% were in urgent need of repair. Reporter Gamal Fahnbulleh from Sky News visited St Anne’s to interview the rector, Rev Keith James. He asked Rev James for his views on the report's findings, how churches find funding for work on its fabric and how St Anne’s church has been looking after its own building. He also spoke to members of the congregation before filming shots of St Leonard's church, Ribbesford which will soon need extensive work on its building. Bewdley Concert Band’s Royal Wedding Performance
When I first stepped into Jubilee gardens, I said “WOW!” in my head. There must have been over 100 people having a picnic or just lying around. And there we (Bewdley Concert Band) were, the centre of attention. So I sat in my place, quite close to the back, and looked around. Then from the first song to the last (my favourite, “Thriller” by Michael Jackson), I knew that the Bewdley Concert Band were an instant success. By the end we all were tired and sweaty but still smiling! Thomas Blyth, aged 10, baritone player
Here is a picture of the winner of the Snakes and Ladders game - fastest for the short course Ben Forth aged 5 3/4. The fastest for the full long course were Anthony, Anne & Max Goodwin, Daisy Baker and Simon Allan.
GUIDING LEADERS I N THE DARK Gill Robinson (2nd Bewdley Brownies) and Carol-Ann Muller-Jones (Wribbenhall Rainbows and recently elected District Commissioner) are also Kemp shop and Hospice volunteers who will be Midnight Walking on 25th June. Despite being a registered walk phobic, Carol-Ann has been persuaded to take part after Gill’s promise of refreshments at the end of the 5 miles. In case she doesn’t make the finish, anyone taking a Sunday morning walk in the forest on the 26th is advised to leave her alone until midday as she doesn’t do mornings either! Sponsors welcome.

Academy's First Graduates
A group of over 30 people aged 55 plus, have just received their certificates after completing the BBC First Clicks course at Bewdley based IT and Training company, the TDM Wyre Academy. The 10 session-course was devised to help the estimated 9.2 million people in the UK who do not currently use the internet to get online. Over 5 weeks, the participants enjoyed the relaxed and friendly atmosphere of the Academy, whilst learning basic computer skills and how to get online. Derek Tiffany, one of the course trainers said “Our course was all about encouraging people and giving them the confidence to get online. We said from the outset, that no one was too old (our oldest participant was 92) or unskilled (we had people who'd never even switched a computer on).” He went on to say “There are many advantages of getting online, from being able to check on the news/weather, researching a trip out, through to banking and shopping. It was fantastic to see their confidence grow and to see them getting excited about the possibilities these skills have opened up for them.” “I really enjoyed the course and I now feel much more confident about getting online”, said Margaret, a course member. “My husband has even let me use our computer for the first time!”.
Peter, another participant was thrilled to be able to set up his own email account and to be able to send his very first email; he said “This will give me greater freedom and enable me to communicate with friends around the world.” Some of the participants have enjoyed the course so much that they are enrolling on some of the other courses that the Academy offers, where they will be learning specific things such as editing images, videos, spreadsheets, online social media and many more. “The TDM Wyre Academy is planning to run some further beginners courses during the next academic year”, said Derrin Kent, Managing Director of the TDM Wyre Academy. “We hope to continue to bring valuable knowledge to members of the local community and help different groups to make the most of the latest technological tools, as it could save them time and money and make a real difference to peoples lives.”
Cabinet minister sees historic restored orchards and work of Bewdley Development Trust
MP Caroline Spelman, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, together with local MP Mark Garnier visited Bewdley based Wyre Community Land Trust to see how historic orchards are being restored. John Iles, managing director said, “She was most impressed by the work that we are doing with farmers and volunteers to restore the unique landscape of Wyre, help protect rare species and re-establish our orchards, meadows and oak forest. She also was highly complimentary of our pure apple juice and took some bottles with her to share with fellow MPs. The apples were grown in the Wyre Forest and pressed and bottled at Blackstone Farm by Peter Styles.”

Caroline Spelman and Mark Garnier then visited Bewdley where they met with directors of Bewdley Development Trust and heard how the Trust has attracted over £1 million of investment into the town. During a walk-about in Bewdley, she saw the town’s flood defences and heard about plans for a new health centre, library and St. George’s Hall community venue. Peter Miller, the Trust's managing director added “It was good to have the opportunity to chat to Mark Garnier, Caroline Spelman and Peter Miller both a Government Minister and discussing how the flood defences have helped Bewdley our local MP and show how we can make a real difference by bringing together organizations and having the tenacity to see through long term projects. By having a board of voluntary directors with both business skills and a commitment to the future of our town, Bewdley Development Trust continues to work to make Bewdley a great place to live, work and visit.”
