The BRIDGE November 2010
Community News
Bewdley Cricket Club
Until now, Bewdley Cricket Club has remained one of the town’s great secrets. Tucked away at the end of the High Street, it boasts an excellent playing field, a thriving youth division and a fun, family atmosphere. So we thought that it was time to set the record straight and raise Bewdley Cricket Club’s profile. And we thought that The Bridge would be the per-
fect outlet through which to achieve this.
We have had major happenings throughout the year including the Simon Higgs Memorial Cup match, which raised funds for the British Heart Foundation appeal, fund-raising for new outdoor nets for the 2010 season, and new covers for 2011.
The club would like to extend a warm welcome to the people of Bewdley and the surrounding area and invite them to find “this jewel” in 2011. BCC always welcomes new members, of all ages and all abilities. The pavilion is also available for one-off events or even for use as a regular venue for any clubs, societies or groups that may be interested, all year round. Please do not hesitate to contact Mr David Mills on 01299 402800 for further details. If you do happen to find yourself at the end of the High Street and the gate is open, please pop in and say hello. Bewdley Cricket Club is located at Lower Park, Bewdley, DY12 2DP.

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley. It is delivered free monthly to more than 4,600 homes
November - now winter is truly here. The Bewdley Festival is over, holidays and sunny barbeques are a distant memory and we all square our shoulders, stiffen our lips and knuckle down with our noses to the grindstone. Funny how many “get-on-with-it” metaphors involve body parts. I haven’t even touched on knees yet. They’re usually good for hard-working comments.
So I thought I’d brighten this grey, murky day up with thoughts of some things that still have the power to surprise and to lift the spirits. Like the flash of green that shot out from a hedge yesterday, fastened itself to the telegraph pole and turned into a woodpecker. Further on was a grass verge with two victoria plum trees still with their withered fruit on. Not surprising at all in plummy Worcestershire, except that they were about two miles from the nearest habitation. How had they got there? Of course, some of the most satisfying surprises are to be had round the home when you’ve been looking for something and instead turn up that …. bottle stopper/missing button/metal thingy that came with the washing machine. Alas, it’s more often a furry green piece of cake that got kicked under the shelf last Easter or someone’s birthday card that you thought you’d sent in June. Mind you, I do have the privilege of surprises every month. When it comes round to the magic date of the 10th, I get an email box full of the month’s Bridge contributions, and get a chance to read what’s going on in Bewdley the following month. So as you read this month’s magazine, just you remember – I heard it all first! Happy reading.

Community News
Well it’s that time of year when we think of bonfires and fireworks with potatoes baking in the ashes and other winter treats. Most countries and religions have historic reasons for having fires and in the UK the obvious one is now the celebration of the failed gunpowder plot of Guy Fawkes.
However, in the garden we often have seasonal fires to remove rubbish that can’t be composted. This will include hard fibrous and wooden materials, slow to decompose, organic material with obvious diseases caused by fungi or bacteria, and materials that have been treated with pesticides, fungicides and herbicides. The traditional way is to start a slow burning fire, the sort that with a little turning will quietly smolder away for several days leaving a small pile of ash. These fire residues can often be incorporated into the soil as a source of potash.
Nowadays it would seem prudent, if having a bonfire, to check with those around you on the basis of being a good neighbour. Before lighting the touch paper, warn the neighbours as they are less likely to complain if they know beforehand and can close windows and keep washing off the line. Light the fire when materials are dry and won’t give off too much smoke and not when the weather is good and people are outside enjoying themselves.
Finally remember the best things roasting in the embers are potatoes and sausages, not hedgehogs, hibernating furry things or next door’s cat; give the materials a shake or turn them over before starting. Stuart Williams

Bewdley Methodists are going down - and up again
Methodists in Bewdley are celebrating the completion of major alterations to their 18th Century church on High Street. A lift has been installed to make it easier to get from the ground floor worship area to the basement, where toilets have been improved, and back up again! The church foyer has also been transformed by the installation of new glass doors and screens. The project cost more than ÂŁ50,000 and the congregation's own fund-raising efforts were boosted by grants from within Methodism at local, regional and national level, together with support from Worcestershire and Dudley Historic Churches Trust.
There's an open invitation to look round the church - and try the lift! - on Saturday 20 November from 2.00-4.00pm and the alterations will be dedicated by the minister, Revd Crawford Logan, during morning service at 10.30am on Sunday 21 November. Mike Dernie Treasurer, Bewdley Methodist Church

I would like to introduce myself as the new manager of Bewdley Tourist Information Centre (TIC). My name is Jo Haycock, and many of you will have already met me. I have worked at the TIC since moving to the Wyre Forest three years ago, and have come to know and love the area. To complete the team, I have two Assistants: Irene Winzer and Josie Mills, both of whom have strong ties to the Wyre Forest and between us we have a wealth of local knowledge. Have you seen anyone in Bewdley with a limp? If so we might have their crutch, which together with umbrellas, walking sticks, lunch boxes (some with food), pink dragons, teapots and cuddly toys, help to make up our unusual collection of lost property.
Even though we have now left summer behind we are still busy beavering away and the TIC is open every day between 12 – 4pm. Visitors can’t help but fall in love with Bewdley and the Wyre Forest and to our great delight they return again and again. This is also the time of year when we promote the upcoming Christmas events. Bewdley Museum will be open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday until 19 December and will host Christmas Fayres together with the infamous Santa’s Grotto - complete with psychedelic reindeer.
Back to those umbrellas and walking sticks. Our daily ritual involves shooing the pigeons out of the TIC, who sneak in with our visitors. Failure to undertake this task can lead to midnight call outs when the pigeon’s night time ramblings trigger the security alarm.

In search of Aunty May 1889 – 1988
Community News
Aunty May was my grandmother. She was nearly 100 years old when she died and neither of us knew the other existed. Her only child, my mother, was born illegitimately and left in London in 1921 to be adopted by a family, who told her that her real mother had died in childbirth.
It was this background that eventually led me to Bewdley and Kidderminster in August 2010. After my mother’s death I found her adoption papers and discovered, via my grandmother’s death certificate, that she was born Sarah May Hawkeswood in Kidderminster in 1889 but died in Newport, S. Wales in 1988!
Further investigations revealed that May was the fifth of ten children born to George and Mary-Ann Hawkeswood in the latter part of the 19th century in Kidderminster. The tenth child had tragically caused the death of Mary-Ann in 1899, leaving George, a carpet weaver, a widower with ten children to care for; an impossibility in those days. May, who was approaching her 12th birthday was put into service nearby, possibly at Hartlebury Castle? I just don’t know.
In August this year I visited Bewdley in search of more clues as to my grandmother’s whereabouts between 1900 and 1920, the year she conceived my mother. In addition to the Hawkeswoods, I discovered links with the Moulder and Beddoes families in Cookley, Wolverley and Upper Arley, but sadly I ran out of time and had to return to Dorset.
So if there is anyone with the surname of Hawkeswood, Moulder or Beddoes, and you think you may be related, you can contact me on pennypriest@myguide.net. I would love to hear from you. Penny Priest

Local school supports team going to build houses for homeless Haitians
The Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre has raised over £4,000 that will help build a new school in the Dominican Republic for Haitian refugees. The children raised this through a number of activities including a non-uniform day and sponsored sports activities.
“We decided to support the team of 11 people from Bewdley Baptist Church, who are going to build houses for the homeless Haitian refugees in the Dominican Republic” said Headteacher, Julie Reilly. “After we contacted the church, they found out that a new school was being built in one of the new villages and that the school was desperately short of funds. The school called The Nest of Love helps educate over 200 children who live in an area where there are 1,500 children with no local government funded education.”
On Sunday the 17th of October, the team from the Baptist Church flew out to work on a building site for two weeks. Like all other volunteers on this project, they are paying for their own flights and accommodation, which comes to more then £15,000. In addition to the money from the school, the team has raised over £10,000, with every single penny going to build new houses for people who currently live in shanty towns. As well as support from their Baptist Church, they have raised funds through bric-a-brac and car boot sales, a promises auction, a Caribbean meal and an R&B concert. “When we heard about Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre’s wonderful offer to support us for education use, we contacted Mission Direct, the UK charity that is organizing the trip” explained David Glenn, one of the team members. “They informed us that there was a school being built in a new village, but they were desperate for funds towards the building work. When we are working in the Dominican Republic, we have arranged to take time off to visit the school, meet the staff and children and take photographs that we can bring back to show the Bewdley children how the money that they raised is being used.”

MISSION TO PERU - Part 1
I was one of a group of 16 people from Anglican churches in the Worcestershire area who went to Peru on a short term mission in August. The aims of our trip were to help strengthen the Worcester-Peru partnership link; participate in some of the social action projects developed by the Anglican church in Peru; and learn from the experience of the growing churches in Peru. For me, the three week trip was both a challenge and an education. The things that will stay with me for ever are: - The humility, dedication and faith of people. - The hope and cheerfulness of the people we met despite their poverty and hardship. - The spectacular scenery of the Andes and Lake Titicaca. And on a more light-hearted note:
- Eating guinea pig (a Peruvian delicacy)! - Being entertained to a fashion show by the stewards on a moving train. - Drinking copious amount of coca tea (to help prevent altitude sickness - or so they claimed).
Our mission was based in three places: Arequipa, Colca Canyon, and the capital city Lima.
In my next report I’ll tell you about the first two places. Lyn Fox

They say you can’t improve upon nature but looking down into Jubilee Gardens as the leaves turn and the fragrant, floral displays of summer make way for a riot of autumnal colour, I’m not so sure. We have to have one of the most creatively planted small public gardens anywhere and it is a credit to the council gardeners who tend it. The specimen trees are a joy, especially the old walnut that the kids love to climb on. Throughout the summer, every day brought a new visual treat and what amazes me was that despite hundreds of people that tramped through it, sat on it and played in it, the garden always looked immaculate. Heaven knows how the gardeners have kept the slugs off the range of succulent hostas, which have been the best I’ve ever seen them this year. I know from my encounters with tree wardens, floral art ladies, florists, foresters, private gardeners and allotment holders that this spring and summer has given us ample recompense for the harsh winter. As autumn gives the garden its last hurrah before the winter grey sets in, I can only thank all those involved for giving us so much gentle pleasure for the last few months. I can’t wait for the Jubilee Gardens orchard to settle in over the next few years. The question is, will we be allowed to taste its fruit? Neville Farmer
Can you help again?
Having had October's photograph from the Museum collection identified by the grand-daughter of the couple, we hope someone recognises this man.
The series appear to all be of the same person. The first and second photographs were sent as Christmas cards and were possibly taken about a year apart. The third could have been several years later. If you recognise the man please contact Charles Purcell on 01299 403582

and the season of Head races has arrived. These are longer stretches from around 2.5Km to 5Km, or more in the case of the Boston Marathon, which is a massive 50Km! Extreme Rowing - this is Boston Lincs, not USA, and Bewdley was represented there again this year by a ladies pair, who secured a new record. Congratulations to them, and we hope the blisters heal soon!
Autumn also sees the early morning mist hang over the water, making rowing a slightly surreal experience. A week or two ago I was on the water when a tiny speck of orangey-red darted in front of me. While my slow thought-processes were deciding that it was the wrong colour (and too fast) for a robin, the tiny bird turned upstream and the sun flashed on the iridescent greeny-blue back confirming its identity as a kingfisher. I’ve been Twinned!
Like many townspeople I tend to read, “Twinned with…” on the town sign when I come back home. Yesterday I was delighted to meet a real live “twin” in the person of Martha Voll. Martha comes from New Albany, a sister town of Clarksville, which became a twin with Bewdley in 2003.
Martha is staying in one of the old houses in High Street, as a guest of the Williams’. It was to see the real country, and even more important, the real people that had decided Martha to come over here. And what did she find interesting about our town?
“It’s so old”, she said. “I live in a forty-year-old house that I think is quite old. But here I am in a house that goes back four hundred years! And you are so squashed together! Our wide streets and big plots of land are so different to the higgledy-piggledy streets of Bewdley”. One thing that had impressed Martha was the friendliness of people. “Everywhere we go in the town we stop to talk to people,” she said. “The Williams seem to know everyone. At home we get in our cars to go shopping in huge malls and don’t know anyone. Here, everyone talks”.
Thank you for your kind comments, Martha!

In April this year a group of friends from Bewdley took a Journey of Remembrance to the Somme area of Northern France. Starting from Bewdley at approx. 6a.m. we arrived in Calais early afternoon and travelled to Arras for two nights’ stay. During the next two days we visited many areas of interest including Lochnagar Crater, Thiepval, Ulster Tower and Beaumont Hamel.
There is an exhibition of pictures of the area visited along with other areas of interest showing in St. Anne's Church leading up to Remembrance Sunday. Pat Prosser

Spot the difference
Those of you who have visited the Baptist Church as part of the Bewdley Festival would struggle to see how the church building has changed. This picture from 1911 show the afternoon Sunday School. Just under 20 years ago, the church was extended and is as we see it today.
Community Conversations
Why not take the chance to meet and chat to representatives from the Council, Worcestershire NHS, West Mercia Police and others. You can discuss local issues that local people have said are important.
For example have you ideas on how to get on with neighbours or make your community safer? What about getting involved in local decision making or doing something for young people?
So do not keep it to yourself – share with others.

Schultz Philosophy
Community News
The following is the philosophy of Charles Schultz, the creator of the ‘Peanuts’ comic strip. You don’t have to actually answer the questions. Just read straight through, and you’ll get the point. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Name the five wealthiest people in the world. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners. Name the last five winners of Miss World. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winner for best actor and actress. Name the last decade’s worth of FA Cup winners.
How did you do?
The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.
Here’s another quiz. See how you do on this one:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Easier?
List a few teachers who aided your journey through school. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile. Think of a few people who have made your feel appreciated and special. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.
The lesson:
The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care. Joy Morgan

Update on Arty
Community News
As you may remember, Arty moved from Leamington to Southampton for his advanced training to become a Guide Dog. His trainer describes him as a very lovable boy who likes to please. Quite sensitive, he has lacked confidence at times and needs calm, supportive handling. He enjoys performing little tricks such as finding a seat and locating the button box at pelican crossings. He knows he will be rewarded with a tasty treat! He has been introduced to traffic work and has learned to refuse the 'forward' command if there is a car near. He will perform an emergency stop if he is crossing a road and a car suddenly appears. He can also manoeuvre around obstacles which are totally blocking the pavement. His behaviour in the home has been very good and his boarders are very impressed and fond of him.
Arty has been matched with his potential owner who is very pleased with him. Their training together has already begun and fingers crossed Arty should qualify as a fully fledged guide dog in a few weeks time. Arty's trainer says: "I have grown very fond of Arty and shall miss him when he moves on."

A group of 20 members had a very interesting conducted tour around Hartlebury Castle and the Hurd Library ending with afternoon tea and cakes. The library group continued to meet on the third Monday of the month at Bewdley Library. The next meeting will be on Tuesday 23rd November at 7.30pm at Wribbenhall Community Centre when Mr Keith Cattell will give a talk entitled 'Light Fantastic'. The August meeting had a change to the programme and Mike Jackson spoke on being a "Motorway Anorak". He sold his many published books on his observations of landmarks on our motorways. September saw Stef Connolly talk entertainingly on "Funky Spinal Health". She encouraged members to join her in beneficial exercises.
At our meeting on 24th November Deborah Anne Brady will speak on "A Female Fleet Street". This will be an open meeting, when friends are invited. To book places or to enquire please ring 400363, no later than 20th November.

November in the forest
At this time of year things are getting quieter in the forest in all sorts of ways. The forest’s wildlife is battening down the hatches ready for winter. The first frosts will bring down the leaves in drifts and the last migrant birds will probably have already gone south. But, as Keats says to autumn, “Thou hast thy music too”. The robin, as the poet remarked, can be heard singing in gardens but is at home too in woodlands, and both sexes sing to establish winter territories. Recently I was treated to a flock of excited long-tailed tits twittering their way through the oak canopy. Sometimes small birds form mixed species flocks in the winter, presumably to give them safety in numbers, as they focus on finding scarce insect food. Winter arrivals such as siskins may be heard among the conifers and birches searching for seeds. I haven’t seen siskins for years but maybe the abundant seed crop this year will attract them to our neck of the woods, then perhaps we’ll see them on garden peanut feeders too: a pretty little bird with yellow streaks and wing bars. Their call at this time of the year is a “high-pitched, rather liquid note” according to The Birdlife of Britain (Hayman & Burton) and I hope that it will
be a familiar sound this winter. The faithful many who enjoy the forest in all seasons will still be there; the Health Walkers will no doubt be around each Tuesday and Sunday at 11am for a morning of fitness-improving exercise and companionship. Weekdays will be busy with visiting schoolchildren, and every Thursday from 10am to 11am the Forest Friends (a group for pre-school children and their carers) will be introduced to nature-based activities by Discovery Centre staff. A regular event that used to be very well attended is Walk in the Woods. Now it has moved to Saturdays, this month’s being on 6th November from 10.30am to 1pm, but the format is still the same: a steadily-paced stroll of not more than 4 miles to take in some of the best sights of the season. It will be led by Chris Doncaster, whose experience with the Wildlife Watch group and the Discovery Centre gives her a store of knowledge about the locale. I wonder where she’ll take you this month? Call 01299 266929 or 266944 to book. This walk is for adults only and costs £5 each. Linda Iles, Wyre Forest Discovery Centre, Forestry Commission

Traditional Village Carols Workshop & Concert 20th November Bewdley Baptist Church, High St.
Put yourself in a Christmas mood by coming along to hear some different types of Christmas Carols sung and played by the West Gallery Quire – Vital Spark.
These carols, hymns and anthems are nearly all from the period 1750 - 1850. This type of music was driven from the churches by the Victorians and replaced by organs and choirs as we know them today. One of the few areas where this lively music has survived is in various villages around Sheffield, and it is still sung with vigour in the pubs there at Christmas.
Workshop You can try singing the type of carols that would have been performed by Thomas Hardy's father and grandfather when they went carol singing at midnight on Christmas Eve by coming to the workshop in the afternoon from 2:30pm. It is easy for children and people who enjoy singing with four part harmonies, treble, alto, tenor and base.
Concert The concert starts at 7:30pm. The strong harmonies and powerful singing of Vital Spark are sure to set you in the mood for the festive season! Cost The cost is only £5 per person. This covers the workshop and concert.

Community News Tails of a Veterinary Practice – life at Riverside Vets as seen by Gavin the practice cat. Hi all, As you may have guessed, this month is going to be a bit of difficult one for me as there will likely be a lot of fireworks about. Like a lot of pets I am really not keen on the loud bangs that go along with November. My humans help me all they can and make things a lot more bearable, but it is still not my favourite month.
My humans always make sure that the curtains are drawn tight so that I can’t be surprised by any flashes of light. It also helps to leave a radio or television on to mask some of the noise of the fireworks. I have a feliway diffuser that is plugged in from September, which releases calming pheromones into my room (you can use DAP diffusers for the same purpose if you have a dog). It also helps your pet if you provide safe hidey places for them during the firework period. If your pet chooses to use their hidey, it is important to allow them to do this without interaction from you. Fussing them or talking to them can reinforce that fireworks are something to be afraid of. If you just allow your pet to hide and then go on about your normal routines, then it helps your pet to realise that they need not be scared but allows them to follow their natural instinct if they do become frightened. More from me next month Gavin

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 11TH OCTOBER 2010 Civic Awards The closing date for nominations for this year’s Civic Awards is 30th November. The Civic Awards Panel agreed to meet shortly thereafter to select the winners. The Awards ceremony itself will take place at the Guildhall on a date to be fixed next February /March. War Memorials The Council accepted a quotation for the cleaning of the two war memorials at St Anne’s Church Bewdley and All Saints’ Church Wribbenhall. It is hoped to have the work done in time for this year’s wreath-laying ceremonies Joint Working with the County Council Parish and Town Councils throughout Worcestershire have been looking at ways and means of working more closely with the County Council on a number of services provided to the general public. The Town Council felt ironing out any duplication was important, but were worried that taking on additional duties could impact upon the Town Council precept (Council Tax) without there necessarily being a corresponding reduction on the County’s Council Tax share. However, where there was no adverse financial impact, any ideas would be considered. Bewdley Residents’ Flood Committee Gill Holland from the Residents’ Flood Committee presented a report to Councillors on the various works that were ongoing to create a new second culvert at Queensway to take water from Riddings Brook under the Kidderminster Road and the improvement of a culvert to take water from Snuff Mill Brook under the gardens in Lower Park. Autumn 2000 Floods – 10 year anniversary Yes, it is ten years since those floods which led to the setting up of the Residents Flood Committee and there will be a “celebratory” meeting open to the public to be held at the Baptist Church on Tuesday 9th November at 7.00pm. Do go along to find out what work continues to be done to minimise the risks of it happening again. Householders’ Boundary Hedges With autumn upon us and the growing season finished, a final request for everyone who has property with hedges and bushes overhanging pavements and passageways to give them a good trim so pedestrians can walk past safely. Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall are: on Mondays (except where indicated) at 7.30pm are: 1st November, 6th December, 4th January (Tuesday), 7th February, 7th March and 4th April. Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. They are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk. TOWN COUNCIL NEWS IS PRODUCED AND PUBLISHED BY BEWDLEY TOWN COUNCIL

Avid readers of The Bridge will recall that in the September edition I informed you of changes in police staffing at Bewdley. We are currently enjoying a reasonable complement of officers in the town, probably as good as it is likely to get in these financially restricted times. We will be using these resources to address those recurring issues that we get the most complaints about.
We now have two officers trained in speed enforcement, so will target those roads where measured speed data substantiates a real rather than a perceived problem. These will be Dowles Rd., Cleobury Rd., Habberley Rd., Red Hill and the A456 & A4117 through Callow Hill and Far Forest. I confidently predict that 80% of those who get caught will be locals, so beware!
We have recently carried out multi-agency road checks of waste carriers (‘tatters’ if you come from the Black Country). There is nothing wrong with this traditional way of earning a living, providing your vehicle is roadworthy, taxed, insured, using the correct fuel, the necessary licences are held and you are not scamming the Benefits Agency. Curiously many of those that we stopped failed these simple conditions; the checks will continue.
Consistently the issue of widest concern is the perceived rowdiness and anti-social behaviour, particularly at weekends, associated with the night time economy in Bewdley. This is a part of a huge national problem caused by the availability of cheap alcohol and extended drinking hours and our modest contingent of officers cannot
solve it all. What we will do is address some of the prime factors that exacerbate the problems locally. We are working with licensees to discourage the use of recreational drugs, under age sales and drunkenness, and will maintain our input to local schools to reduce the problems in future years by education and diversionary activities.
In August our very own Section Officer David Taylor received the High Sheriff’s Trophy at an award ceremony at West Mercia Police Headquarters. This is presented to a member of the Special Constabulary who is considered to have made the most outstanding contribution to the work of the force. Dave is in charge of the small dedicated band of Specials who give up their time to assist us to police Bewdley and Stourport most weekends and at the many public events throughout each year. Their support is invaluable and greatly appreciated. The next PACT meeting will be held at Bewdley Baptist Church at 6.30 p.m. on Tuesday 30th November. Come along to discuss progress on the issues above. If you have any others that you wish to raise before then, just inform any member of the Local Policing Team or PACT panel. Looking back over the summer I think one of the most enjoyable days personally was the HarvestFest Saturday. My brother had travelled down from Nottinghamshire to have a look at the Ferry exhibition. It sometimes takes the entertainment of a special visitor to make you realise how much goes on in our little town. We spent time in the Who pays the Ferryman? exhibition which was very busy yet again. Can we thank everyone for their kind words and congratulations on the display. It was visited by people from near and far. We had nearly 50 memory cards written which provide a fascinating background to the ferry stories, and over 200 people wrote in the visitor’s book. New photographs are still being sent through and we will be putting on a smaller exhibition in our garden in Dog Lane one or two weekends next year. Walking through the museum we could see a range of Friends volunteers providing activities for children, the air raid shelter was full and the craft shops were busy. Then we had the heavy horses’ parade and a taste of freshly pressed apple juice in the museum entrance. It really made me appreciate what a great place Bewdley is to live. And so much of the enjoyment is down to volunteers playing a vital part in enhancing the town. I fully agree with Margaret Ashmore’s comments last month about the volunteers who make Bewdley and the surrounding area such a good place to live. If you are new to the area then the best way to meet people and “fit-in” quickly is to join a volunteer group, even if you can only give a little bit of time – and as someone who works full time and long hours I know it can be difficult – but believe me it is worth it. So thank you to all volunteers now and in the future. Penny Griffiths Chair The Friends of Bewdley Museum
Ribbesford Diggings
If you have, in the last year, walked on the Worcestershire Way from the back of St. Leonard’s church up the hill, you might well have noticed some ‘earthworks’ to your left. Holes have been dug in the field. Has Time Team been here? Not Time Team itself, but something archaeological. Richard Styles, who farms this field, has consistently found debris suggesting buildings, yet no buildings are shown on any maps. So he called in some experts and had a geo-physical survey done of the area. The results revealed ‘anomalies’, perhaps areas of burning. There were no startlingly clear wall lines, but there were indications of something that is not visible on the surface. Pottery found on the site has been dated to the 15th and 16th centuries, but nothing later. The church, parts of which are 12th century, shows there was a settlement here. Is this field evidence that the settlement stretched up the hill? The way forward is for more archaeological work, but this is expensive. The site is not under threat and is not big enough for Time Team. If some money could be found, then we might learn more. Who knows what secrets this field could reveal! Heather Flack
