Operation Christmas Child

Why not make a child in a developing country happy this Christmas by filling a shoebox!

It is so simple and costs little to make a child in a poor country happy this Christmas. All you have to do is pick up a leaflet (available from a number of churches including St.Anne’s and Bewdley Baptist Church). Then decide whether the box is for a girl or a boy and fill with appropriate gifts. The leaflets contain lots and lots of ideas for different age groups.

Once completed drop your shoebox into the church together with £2.50 to cover transporting costs no later than 20th November.

Why not spare a few minutes and see how you can make a real difference to a child by watching the video at:www.operationchristmaschild.org.uk

2nd BEWDLEY BROWNIES

During the winter term we will be working towards our ‘Environment badge’.We have already looked at recyclable and non-recyclable products and how far some of our food travels to reach us. As well as looking at what we recycle at home we are also collecting plastic bottle tops and batteries at Brownies. We have also found out about four endangered species and met Pippin, a guide dog in training and her puppy walker, Gabi Wootton. At our next meeting we will be having a fashion show, where we will be modelling outfits made from recyclable items.

On the 6th October at our weekly meeting we had a rainforest animal encounter. Paul Carpenter from Life in the Rainforest gave us a very interesting and informative talk about some of the animals that can be found starting on the rainforest floor amongst the leaf litter before moving up in to the trees.

We met a corn snake, praying mantis, stick insects, a millipede, a frog and some of us bravely stroked a tarantula. This was great fun, especially when the frog escaped and Paul had to catch it! Hope you like the photograph!

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley

It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month

This month I am following up on my resolution to talk to more people. It has turned out to be a great idea. In my solitary walks in the countryside round here I have met and talked to all sorts of interesting people. Farmers, horse riders, gardeners, everyone has had time for a few words. Even better, I have been, like Autolycus in A Winter’s Tale, "a snapper-up of unconsidered trifles".

Here are some country trifles I have snapped up: If you have a reactor, that is, a cow that has tested positive for T.B. , the whole herd has to be negative for 60 days before you can move any of them: prices for oats locally are really good at the moment; there’s a sort of sheep called a Balwen Welsh which has white socks and horns and is very hardy.

Mind you, over the course of the Festival last month we all learned some pretty interesting trifles. From honorary local, Francis Brett Young, to really local Max Keen and Richard Perrin there was plenty to raise our eyebrows and say,“I never knew that!”. It was also good to see the town looking so busy and full of colour; Gary was there as usual to record the scene. Gary has a new rival in the shape of another talented Bewdley School student; Joe Turner will be sending us photos as part of his coursework at the school. Here at the Bridge headquarters (All right, my little boxroom) we are welcoming the fresh perspective of the next generation in the shape of Joe and Chris, whose latest article should make us think. By now many of you will have received the Bridge calendars you ordered. They are still available at Bewdley Tourist Information Centre. St Anne’s ,All Saint’s and Bewdley Baptist Churches. So grab them quick before they all go!!

It was decided that the proceeds from our Harvest Festival this year should be donated to the Bewdley Youth Cafe in view of the financial problems they are facing. At our last House Fellowship Dr. Ken Mothersdale came to talk to us about the possibility of holding a Lay Witness Weekend. We all found this very informative and felt it was something we may consider doing in the future.

The all age worship service this month will be on the 20th and will be led by the Rev. Linda Catlow.

Autumn at The Hop Pole allotment and some recipe ideas

The bounty of the summer cropping has been in gentle decline for several weeks now although the greenhouse and outdoor tumbler tomatoes have continued to crop prolifically. By now, many gardeners will be wondering what else can be done with green tomatoes, apart from making the usual green tomato chutney. Well, we are all familiar with the concept of carrot cake, and some of you may also have made cakes using grated courgettes, but you can easily substitute finely chopped green tomatoes for the carrot or courgette in your usual recipe. There's no need to skin the tomatoes so there is not a lot of work involved and the resulting cake will be moist and delicious; no-one will guess that there are tomatoes in there! This is the last report from the allotment for this year. Leeks have been planted for the winter and green manure will be sown on the remaining open ground for overwintering and digging in at the start of next spring. Thanks to all of you who have shown an interest in the gardening and livestock at the Hop Pole; it's been good to get your feedback. Happy gardening and cooking. Val Austin

As some of you may already know we are planning to add a small community room (with disabled access and toilet) to our existing church. The building is Grade2* listed and therefore any addition must have District, Diocesan and English Heritage planning approval. This we have achieved and we are now busy trying to raise funds by various money-raising activities and applications to all relevant grants. We will be close to achieving 50% of this by the end of the year. Many thanks to all the Churches for your letters of support and to the many of you who have supported our activities. It has been a source of encouragement and affirmation to feel this support for our endeavours. We hope it will produce a further strengthening of closeness between the churches and an additional resource for the town. Margaret Hill See the advert for Jazz at the Ramada

Community News

St Anne’s Church

Saturday, 5th November 10am-4pm

Shhh!....whisper it very quietly. It’s that time of year – Christmas is fast approaching! No doubt you feel bombarded already by special displays in shops and supermarkets and huge hoardings encouraging you to book your Christmas lunch at various hostelries.

So for a gentler approach to Christmas, why not make sure you come to the Traidcraft Christmas Fair at St Anne’s Church, Bewdley on Saturday, 5th November, between 10am and 4pm. We’ll have a great range of fairly traded products from across the developing world, enabling you to buy distinctive gifts for your family and friends and to stock up on Christmas treats as well as every day items. There will be samples of the clothing range from the current catalogue and lots of bargains with reduced priced crafts, jewellery, clothes, children’s toys etc as well a very good selection from the new catalogue.

In these difficult economic times your support is more vital than ever, as it’s the poorest people of the world who are suffering most. As our Chief Executive, Paul Chandler says, “Loyal customers supporting the Traidcraft brand…..are the bedrock of our ability to bring hope and opportunity to hundreds of thousands of our partners and their families around the world. Working in partnership with each other across the globe, we can make a difference and build a better world.” So I look forward to seeing you on the 5th November, when we’ll have Fairtrade tea and coffee to refresh you, as well as home baking and lunches, so you can have a relaxed shopping experience, while knowing that every purchase really does make a difference. At the open meeting in September, following a lovely meal we heard an excellent speaker. Ellie Targett spoke to us on “Another Man’s Shoes”, and she followed this with the sale of her books.

On 30th November David Bartley will speak on “A Potted History of Pottery & Porcelain”, and members are invited to take some pottery along. Meetings take place monthly at the Ramada Hotel, and further details can be obtained by ringing 400363.

Bewdley Townswomen Our November meeting is on Tuesday 22nd at 7.30pm at Wribbenhall Community Centre, Shaw Hedge Road. The speaker is Mr Ken Gilks and his subject will be 'Odes of Life and Laughter' so we should be in for a humourous evening. The competition is for a favourite short poem. New members and visitors are always welcome. For more information please phone 01299 401352

The only way is Bewdley

I’m sure everybody by now knows of the ITV borderline reality show, “The only way is Essex”. Pop culture at its peak, the only way is Essex follows the lives of pure born Essex girls and gals, and the stereotypical traits which come with them. This got me thinking… what would “The only way is Bewdley” be like? Would it be the local moaning critics, the rowdy Friday night pub crawlers or the lost souled teenagers that would be featured?

Thankfully, I don’t think so. In times where the economy is down and people power is lower than ever before, does Bewdley still buck the trend? According to statistics, I’m proud to say we do. Well above average GCSE & A Level results, below average crime figures and a town reputation to be proud of, “the only way is Bewdley” would reflect the hard working, relaxed, picturesque community we enjoy. Despite the struggle of many communities nationally, the only way for Bewdley is up. Chris D Salter

Are you over 60 and looking for a good quality two course meal for £3 (three at Christmas for £3.50) and some friendly company? The why not come along to Bewdley Baptist Church's Super 60’s monthly luncheon club? Super 60’s is open to everyone, you do not have to come to church to join in and enjoy yourself in a friendly surrounding. Dates for the remainder of 2011 are November the 8th and December the 13th. The club runs meals throughout 2012. Local Produce Their aim is to use as much local produce as possible, this includes such items as beef, pork and apples all from the Wyre Forest. Of course, they cater for all meal requirements including vegetarian and coeliac. Volunteers Everyone who is involved in the Super 60’s luncheon club is a volunteer. The church does not charge for the use of the room, so the only cost is the good quality food that is purchased. Booking To keep costs as low as possible, they cater for the actual number of people attending, so it is essential to book. Like to know more? If you would like to know more speak to Sheila Glenn (012299) 401953, email : sheilagenn@btconnect.com, or contact the Church Office at 61 High Street, Bewdley (403267).

Bewdley Market continues to go from strength to strength Bewdley’s monthly street market continues to attract more and more high quality stalls and is proving highly popular with local residents and tourists

Peter Miller, managing director of the Bewdley Development Trust, which organises the event, said: “Our Sunday markets are a tremendous success, with an exceptional range of stalls and traders reporting how pleased they are. Similarly feedback from people shows how much they appreciate a market with such a variety of local produce and products.”

Dates for the forthcoming markets are 6th November 4th and 18th December.

Souper Success at Bewdley Harvest Fair Over 600 portions of delicious home-made soup were supped at the Bewdley Harvest Soup Trail on Saturday, 1st October. Glorious weather didn’t stop people queuing up to sample and judge the creations by chefs from The Bailiff’s House, The Food Foundry, Grannystap Victorian Tea Room, The Hop Pole, The Little Pack Horse and the Mug House.

Each competitor had to create a soup using local produce, much of it grown in Bewdley gardens or local farms. The event, part of a series over the Harvest Fair weekend, was designed to promote local produce and local food outlets. Neville Farmer said they were overwhelmed by the success of the day. “It was a real Bewdley event,” said Chris Griffin. “Even the trophy was a collaboration of the Bewdley museum artisans, Chris Connor and Eric Lyons with engraving from the Bewdley Cobbler.”

The public voting was very close but The Mug House’s “Spiced Beetroot and Apple Soup with Apple Chips and Beetroot Crisps” was declared the winner by the Mayor of Bewdley, Jan Adams (pictured above). The Mug House chefs, Pavol Kocis, Mark Rhoden and Lewis Stanley had even churned their own butter from local cream and customers from the pub had helped with the supply of vegetables. The competitors’ recipes will be put up onto the Bewdley Development Trust website in the next few days.

Bewdley Concert Band

Bewdley Concert Band has held a First Anniversary Concert at St Anne’s Church. During the concert the band celebrated the past year and thanked its many supporters. Musical Director Mr Ian Worton said, ‘It was an absolutely marvellous concert. The church was packed and the band played exceptionally well. It was a wonderful way to round off our first year which has been fantastic. The band has exceeded all my expectations this year. We really are now an established community band in Bewdley.’ During the past year the Band has grown to 33 members of all ages and abilities and has performed at a variety of functions including Jubilee Gardens Bewdley, Bewdley Museum, Gheluvelt Park Worcester and Far Forest Countryside Show. The band’s next performance will be at The Christmas Lights Festival in Bewdley. The band still welcomes new members and would particularly like to hear from Clarinet players. Rehearsals are held on Saturday mornings at Bewdley Primary School. For more information contact Band Secretary Valerie Blount on 078137 69904.

The St Anne’s PIG

Community News

Following the very successful Year 3/4 World War II project, which involved hatching some chickens and growing some fine vegetables, you might be forgiven for wondering whether the PIG is part of the new and improved 2011/12 project.

However, the PIG in question is the newly formed Playground Improvement Group at St Anne’s CE Primary School.

The group is made up of a small and extremely dedicated team of parents, who have already given up a huge amount of their time to transform the drab and dreary outside areas of the school and turn them into colourful and attractive spaces in which the children can play.

After an inspirational win in the Bewdley in Bloom competition in which the grounds were described as “newly turbocharged by some enthusiastic mums”, the PIG are not rested on their well tended laurels. Their next plan is a fundraising project to lower the monkey bars on the climbing frame The children are thrilled with the revamp. Over the summer the new beds looked fabulous with the recently added plants and the work around the slope leading up to the main entrance has altered the previous

ugly bald patch into a lovely terraced area. The sheds have been painted with flowers in bright colours and the wooden structures have gone from brown to full technicolour. The children are thrilled with the work but there is still more to be done and the improvements need to be maintained. Volunteers are always needed and any donations of plants or supplies gratefully received (call 07976008306 if you would like to help in any way). The PIG are planning a greenhouse for the school to be constructed using 2 litre plastic drinks bottles so please allow them to recycle them for you. On behalf of the parents and children at St Anne’s, we would like to say a huge thank you to the people who have helped with the project. Your time and dedication are much appreciated.

The deadline for the December issue is the 10th November

Women at the crossroads

Community News

When the big upheavals come in life it’s good to know that there is someone to turn to for advice and direction. The crunch point is not always huge and it’s not always bad, but we Christians believe that our Father God wants to be involved with every aspect of our lives and involve us in the building of His Kingdom. This is the theme of Bewdley Baptist Church’s Women’s Day on Saturday November 19th – “Moving forward: finding God’s pathway for your life”. During the day, which starts at 9.30am and finishes at 4.30pm, there will be interactive sessions led by Rosalyn Derges of Inspired Women’s Ministries, exploring prayer and other ways of hearing from God. There will also be worship, time to chat and sharing of Communion. Refreshments are provided but delegates are asked to bring their own picnic lunch. There is no charge for the day but there will be opportunity to make a donation to cover costs. If you are interested please contact Mary Farmer at the church on 01299 403267, leaving a message if necessary. Bookings should be made before November 13th. We hope to see you there! Tails of a Veterinary Practice – life at Riverside Vets as seen by Gavin the practice cat.

It looks like and exciting month ahead. One of my humans gave birth to a human kitten (I think humans call them babies ) at the end of September. All of the other humans are very excited about meeting the new baby boy and are wishing Mum well. I am missing her as she works in the office a lot and I now have to do without company when I take my snooze. Back in October, I asked my humans to look ahead to this month and start preparing so that I can get through the season of fireworks without getting distressed. I must admit I am not at all fond of the loud bangs. Thankfully, I have my humans very well trained and they know that it is most helpful to start preparing in advance. Don’t worry though, there are things you can do to help your pet even close to the time of fireworks.

My humans always make sure that the curtains are drawn tight so that I can’t be surprised by any flashes of light. It also helps to leave a radio or television on to mask some of the noise of the fireworks. I have a feliway diffuser that is plugged in from September which releases calming pheromones into my room (you can use DAP diffusers for the same purpose if you have a dog). It also helps your pet if you provide safe hidey places for them during the firework period. If your pet chooses to use their hidey it is important to allow them to do this without interaction from you. Fussing them or talking to them can reinforce that fireworks are something to be afraid of. If you just allow your pet to hide and then go on about your normal routines then it helps your pet to realise that they need not be scared but allows them to follow their natural instinct of they do become frightened. Gavin.

A wonderful suprise

The members of Dance Funtasia, a theatre workshop that meets at St. George’s Hall in Bewdley, had a wonderful surprise waiting for them when they returned after the summer holidays. The International Council of the Margaret Morris Movement had awarded them two trophies. Jessica Potter had won the junior members trophy for her dance performed at the centenary celebrations of the Movement in London and the whole group had won the Claire Cassidy for their creative work. The latest project is a theatrical production written and performed by the members themselves to be staged next year. The group meets once a month on a Saturday for a workshop in dance, drama and creative art and is always open to new members. For further information please ring Joyce on 01299 400633.

November In The Forest

Community News

It is autumn well and truly now. This is the time to enjoy a brisk walk, making the most of the longer views that have opened up in the forest with the loss of the foliage.

Perhaps you will be rewarded with a sighting of fallow deer as they search for acorns and beech mast to feed on. Frosty or misty mornings have their own atmosphere, with sparkling ice crystals fringing each stem or dewy cobwebs delicately draping fences, branches and ground. Why not join one of the Health Walks every Tuesday and Sunday starting from the Visitor Centre at 11am? They are free and their aim is to build fitness at a gentle pace. If you haven’t been before come at 10.30am to allow time to register with the volunteer

leader. Pre-school children and their carers can meet every term-time Thursday from 10am to 11am for forest-based play and activities with Forest Friends, led by the Discovery Centre’s staff.

I hope that you have been able to see the Discovery Centre during the last year, either with a school, leisure group or at one of our special public events.

The last of the speciallycommissioned interpretative artworks is now in place in or around the building, enabling people to engage with the forest, its wildlife, history and geology in all sorts of imaginative ways. These were all made by artists in the region and were funded by Biffa and Heritage Lottery Fund. Linda Iles Forestry Commission

Endangered species in the Wyre Forest

Sadly the future of the Community Discovery Centre and everything that goes on there is in question. The Forestry Commission is having its budget cut by 25% and the proposal on the table cuts all but one of the Wyre education staff. This would leave one “Learning Coordinator” to “facilitate” education in a new district reaching from Shrewsbury to Cornwall.

The delivery of education as we know it (and as valued by visiting teachers for nearly 20 years) would be lost.

We are fighting, and there may still be hope. If you want to let me have your views please email me at linda@uncllys.co.uk .

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS

Community News

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 3RD OCTOBER 2011

Wribbenhall Millennium Green

It was agreed to fix the Annual General Meeting of the Millennium Green Trust for Tuesday 15th November at 6.00pm at the Shaw Hedge Road Community Centre. Civic Awards

Just a reminder that 30th November is the closing date for anyone to nominate a worthy individual for a Civic Award. The scheme which has been in place for over ten years is to reward people with the honour (and a medal) who has given outstanding service to the local community in Bewdley/Wribbenhall. Householders’ Boundary Hedges

Now we are well into autumn the Town Council would ask where possible that for anyone who has a property with bushes or hedges which have grown up over the summer, and now overhang or interfere with footpaths and passageways, to give them a trim so pedestrians can walk past safely. 20 mph Speed Limit

The Mayor had received a letter form the County Council’s Director of Environmental Services (Highways Chief) rejecting many of the arguments in favour of an immediate introduction of a 20mph speed limit in the town centre including High Street where it was said “the reality is that no casualty improvements are likely to be achieved by the introduction of a 20mph limit along this road where speeds are already low.” The Town Council will continue to lobby for the limit. Christmas Lights

Following on from the purchase last year of some new “feature” lights, Councillors agreed to some further updating of the timing and switching equipment and to look at further improvements to the lights themselves including those on the Christmas tree as part of next year’s budget St Anne’s Church Clock

Those of you who noticed that the church clock had stopped at 12 o’clock for rather a long time should know it was because the entire mechanism had been sent away for upgrading. It should now be back in place. Future Town Council meetings Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall on Mondays at 7.30pm are: 7th November, 5th December, 3rd January (Tuesday) 6th February and 5th March . Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. They are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk

Many people chatted to me about Guide Dogs in October and I have been able to send a cheque from the people of Bewdley to support their work in the future.

I had a phone call from Gill who owns Arty. He continues work hard; there have been some 'ups and downs', but she is supported by her trainer based in Southampton. Having had three dogs before Arty, she is very patient and knows that like us, dogs can be less inclined to work some days! Sadly, Frazzle has been withdrawn from the training programme. She became very stressed if paving slabs, drain covers wobbled and despite being taken back to basics the problem has continued. She may have

'pinched' the pad of her paw, which would have been very painful. Her trainer is aware of her qualities and it is still hoped that she will become a working dog in another guise. Whatever her futureshe will certainly enrich the lives of those she shares. Pippin is nearly 6 months and well into her training. She is confident and has to be 'handled' firmly! She enjoys attending the classes run by Guide Dogs, in Kidderminster. She has built a strong bond with Sophie, a cross labrador/retriever, who was Frazzle's best friend Many thanks for your continued support. Other puppy-walkers are amazed what celebrities all the dogs have become! Gabi Wootton

Fancy going to Laos?

Community News

Anyone who has had even a passing conversation with the Griffins in the past couple of weeks cannot have avoided hearing about our brilliant holiday in Laos. We fell in love with the places we saw, the kind and friendly people we met, and the laidback “Laos way”, and have been talking about it at length ever since. We would not have had such a brilliant time getting to know Laos without our travel agent, Tavanh.

As usual, we made our own travel arrangements to get to Laos, and looked on the internet for a local travel agent to organise the trip within the country. We’re not sure why we chose Tavanh Travel, but we were so glad we did. Although we only paid a small deposit in advance, Tavanh planned everything for us, booking hotels and transport, arranging guides and making everything run smoothly. For example, when we arrived in Laos with a ridiculously short amount of time to catch our first internal flight, Tavanh’s rep was waiting with our visa forms already completed so we could be at the head of the queue. And when our journey to the Plain of Jars (where the damage done to Laos by US forces in the Vietnam War is most evident) was disrupted because of mud slides, she tried every option to get us there and then made alternative arrangements when even she had to give up.

We met Tavanh when we went to her office to pay the balance of the cost. From the emails it was hard to predict what she would be like, but even so we were surprised to find a beautiful young woman with just a hint of an Australian accent who had made quite a long journey herself in creating her company.

Every year, the Australian government helps Laos by providing 20 scholarships for Lao students to study in Australia. Tavanh was one of the lucky recipients and was awarded a diploma in Tourism Management, inspired by her father who had worked in tourism. She returned to Laos and set up Tavanh Travel Service – helpfully tavanh means the sun in Lao. The company has been operating for almost 10 years now and serves guests from all over the world, particularly Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. It is a small business and is privately and locally owned, unlike many others where the profits don’t stay in Laos. It offers mostly tailor-made tour programs in every part of Laos including activities such as trekking, elephant riding, cooking, Mekong river cruises and meeting Laos people through visiting hill tribes and home-stays. It also makes arrangements for school groups coming to Laos in exchange with local students. If you ever think of visiting Laos, contact Tavanh at tavanhtravel@gmail.com or her website: www.explorelao.com
