My Mayoral Year
One of the questions I keep asking myself is, do any young people have the dream of becoming mayor of their town? I certainly didn’t and would have said ‘who, me? Not possible!’ But how wrong can you be? When we originally moved to Bewdley I felt overwhelmed with the locals friendliness and helpfulness. Never before had I had the experience of just popping to the local shops for maybe a loaf of bread, then finding that it was taking up to an hour before I returned home, because everyone wanted to stop and chat. It was because I felt that Bewdley was giving me so much I wanted to
give something back. I joined the Bewdley Chamber of Trade and after a while Chamber Maids was formed. Following that, I was asked to stand for Bewdley Town council (“Only one meeting a month”, I was told, not so….) and thanks to the people of Bewdley I was elected, and as they say, the rest is history. Many people have asked me what were the high lights of my year; a hard question, as everything we have attended has been enlightening and enjoyable, from judging iguanas for the carnival to meeting Prince Charles and Camilla, but the most poignant has to be the many talents of the young people in the Wyre Forest area. The Wyre Forest Young Voices, the Youth Makes Music, going to Malvern to see all the very talented young people from the ages of 5 to 17, tug at your heart strings. Then there are the Civic Awards, a chance to pay tribute to our unsung heroes of this town. In-between times, when I’ve had the chance, I have raised funds for my mayor’s charity, monies which will go to the Bewdley Scout and Guide groups. We’ve had a very full and varied year, a year we will look back on with many happy memories and with feelings of having being honoured to have the chance to represent this town. I’d like finish with many thanks to all the organisations who invited us to their various activities and fund raising. They made us feel so welcome. They too work hard all year round to put on events for this town and that’s what makes Bewdley such a very special place. Barbara Stallwood
Cheque presentation by PTA
Bewdley First School’s PTA has raised £10,000 for a multi-use games area for use by the school and after school clubs. It will help promote healthy lifestyles and enhance their sports facilities. It will include two courts/areas that will be fenced off and marked out for football, netball, basketball and cricket and other sport uses. “Our fund raising activities during the year included a Christmas fayre, car boots, re-cycling discos, film nights, a big quiz, a sponsored quest and a summer. fayre” said Susie Burrows of the PTA. Paul Roper, headteacher is seen receiving the cheque from some of the members of the PTA.
Editorial
The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley. It is delivered free monthly to more than 4,600 homes Have you ever won any prizes?
The subject came up the other day when a group of us were chatting over a cup of tea and one of our number told us she’d just won four packets of washing powder. “Wow!” we exclaimed. “Hitting the big time!” Going round the circle we all confessed to having gone through life untouched by the capricious hand of fortune. I did try to impress with the time I won a chromium-plated naked lady lampshade holder in a tombola, but it seemed that none of us had won the lottery or inherited a mansion in Sussex from a previously unknown aunt. I decided to look further and combed the streets of Bewdley to see if anyone could improve on our failure. The results you will see inside, but do write and tell me if you’ve fared better than my original group. Elsewhere in the magazine you will see other local news that has nothing to do with luck but everything to do with hard work. The Regatta will have taken place and all the wellmuscled young people will have departed back to their own clubs; we have news of a win by the rowing club’s Veterans, and of some intrepid sailors from Bewdley. There have been some less watery successes; at the Forestry Centre the new Community Discovery Centre is taking shape; we have a new nursery facility in the Riverside Chidren’s Centre and, a really cheering sight, several new shops opened in the town. Well, I’m off to fill in some coupons and complete the slogan in my own words. You never know; I might win a dream house in the Bahamas. Margaret Ashmore

Low Carbon Communities
Bewdley Development Trust has so far run five workshops in and around Bewdley involving 30 people working out their current carbon footprint and exploring ways of both reducing this and exploring the use of renewable energy in the future.
The next phase of the project will make this opportunity more widely available and link into the emerging Bewdley Transition Group which is forming to explore ways in which Bewdley can respond positively to the challenges of peak oil and climate change.
This project is one of 18 projects stemming from the Grow with Wyre Landscape Partnership project. The Development Trust is also exploring the use of woodfuel, sourced locally, to power boilers in homes, businesses and community buildings. If you are interested in coming to the Bewdley Transition Group or would like any further information about the project please contact Peter Miller at BDT on 01299 405516 or email petermiller@bewdley.org.uk.
If you would like to know more about Grow With Wyre please contact Georgina Coen who is the community representative covering Bewdley on 01299 822987.
Hidden Treasures at Bewdley Museum
As Collections & Interpretation Officer at Bewdley Museum it is part of my responsibility to look after the 20,000 items housed in the museum’s collection. The collection reflects this and has artefacts relating to pewter making, leather manufacture and the Wyre Forest industries of besom broom making, basket making and charcoal burning. The museum is also home to the Kidderminster Museum & Art Gallery
Where are they now?
Here is the first of our series of well-known Bewdley faces. We thought you might like to guess who dug out an old photo of themselves and here's an easy one to start with. Most of you see her in town at least once a week. E-mail us if you've guessed who it is. editorial@bewdleybridge.org.uk
collection which ranges from geology and archaeology to costume and paintings. Because of the size of the museum only a fraction of these items can be on display at any one time. We address this by holding temporary exhibitions which feature different parts of the collection. This month, the museum’s herbaria (plant specimen) collection can be viewed in ‘Flora, Fauna and Fossils’ which runs until 9th August. Elizabeth Cowley, Museum Collections Officer

get really active
You move to a new area and you have a new job to settle in to, a new home to find and perhaps schools to sort out for the kids. Once the initial hard work is over, you then start to think about how to meet people and build a social circle. Or perhaps you have been in the area for a long time but would like to expand your horizons? If you’re interested in coming along to a couple of evenings so see if you like it, give one of us a ring. If you like, we can even arrange for a couple of us to meet you in a pub for an informal chat. We are a relaxed bunch and welcome all sorts - just as long as you enjoy social occasions and would like to be able to put something back in to the community a couple of times a year. We look forward to hearing from you.

Visitors to Wribbenhall
A while ago, we had two visitors to Wribbenhall - Brian and Carol Cooper. Brian remembered being evacuated here in the War and living somewhere on the Kidderminster Road and even going to school here very briefly. Brian had an elder brother with him at that time. The family were all back down south (Chichester, I think) by the time of VE day, so it was a short stay. Does anyone remember the family? If you do, please contact : Heather Flack (01299 400691)

It is with sadness that we have had to say goodbye to our Minister, the Rev. Pam Garrud, who has been with us for the past three years. She has had to return to the U.S.A. for personal reasons. We all wish her well. We are, however, fortunate to have a new Minister arriving in September, and we are all looking forward to welcoming him. His name is Rev. Crawford Logan and he is moving to us from Rugby. The Coffee Morning held at the home of Patricia Jones raised over £100 for our Access Fund. Many thanks to everyone who supported this event.

Summer at Bewdley Library
Here at the Library we're busy getting ready for our young borrowers’ Summer Reading Challenge. This year’s has a fantasy theme - 'Quest Seekers'. If they take up the challenge, readers aged 4 – 11 read six books of their choice over the summer, receive goodies as they progress and are presented with a medal and certificate upon completion. This summer we're also very excited to be working with the new Riverside Children's Centre. In August, visitors from Riverside will be doing three story and craft activity sessions at the library (aimed at the under-fives), based around popular children's books. Your Library can be a useful link between your community and agencies which provide community services. By working together we can improve local provision for the people of Bewdley. Most of us like to sit down with the local paper. We turn to our favourites first – what’s on, “hatched, matched and dispatched”, readers’ letters, sport, the Harriers, and of course local news. Twitchers Wanted
Community News
‘Twitchers’ are required for the spotting of a particular and not very rare (sorry to say) type of thieving magpie, whose habitat is anywhere and everywhere, usually in the vicinity of property that doesn’t belong to them. They may be driving around or walking; they could be pretending to be lost or looking for a dog. Their imagination is boundless; make no mistake that they are serious in their intent of relieving you of your property and money. They use vans and pick ups, large or small; in fact any car will do. They need to travel to get to us, and that is their FIRST weakness. We need to be aware of strangers and when we see them think “I wonder what they are up to?” Neighbourhood Watch relies on the good people of any town, village or farm to let their Local Policing Team know about suspicious incidents. They need our help. However, we are not just helping them; we are helping ourselves to prevent crime in our area and home. Many people live in fear of crime, but they shouldn’t because we can all do something about it and lots of people do. All it needs is a phone call to 0300 333 3000 to let the Police know any information, however small. Have you seen a vehicle that has been lurking? If so try and get the registration number and the make and colour. If people come to your door, do not let them in, even if they say your chimney is falling off. All genuine callers will have an Identity Card and should produce it. If you are in any doubt tell them to call back and report it to the police straight away. Your Local Policing Team is there to help you to avoid becoming a victim of crime and to feel secure in your home. Help them to help you. Why not join Neighbourhood Watch, have the signs and let people know “WE ARE NOT STANDING FOR IT ANY MORE”. Rod Wilson, Chair of Wyre Forest Neighbourhood Watch

It’s holiday time!
We’re now, allegedly, into the holiday season for gardeners so if the lawn is cut, the irrigation or alternative system is working, somebody is calling round to pick the flowers, and harvest the ripened crops, then you can pack your bags and go. However for the serious minded now is also the time to plan ahead and continue general maintenance. Dead head flowers, spray against pests especially aphids, disbud where large flower heads are required for entry to the autumn flower shows in the area. The last of the bulbs should be dug up and believe it or not daffodils and other bulbs for next spring should be going into the ground or pots.
Perennials grown from seed should be planted into sheltered areas for growing on; the greenhouse will need its pre-winter overhaul. Sowing of seeds will see you putting in spring cabbage and although winter is still a long way off the sprouts need to be planted; but it’s also not too late to get some lettuce going for a winter crop. Now is a good time to be taking cuttings from herbs such as bay, lavender, mint and rosemary etc; put into sandy soil to grow. Indeed this time of the year is just right for taking cuttings, simple propagation in sandy soil will suit hydrangeas, most shrubs, geraniums and fuchsias. Finally if there is time, before the BBQ and ice creams, just have a look at the lawn to see if areas need to be rejuvenated or repaired. Stuart Williams

Direct train to London from Bewdley and Arley
Community News
Chiltern Railways and the Severn Valley Railway will be running a direct train from Bridgnorth and Bewdley to London Marylebone from Severn Valley Railway stations on Saturday 15th August. This will be the first such service ever from the Severn Valley. Chiltern’s air-conditioned ‘Clubman’ train will leave Bewdley at 0835, arriving in the Capital at 1159. Passengers will have five hours in London, before leaving on the 1720 from Marylebone to Kidderminster, with a transfer over on the return journey to a Severn Valley train at Kidderminster Town, arriving at Bewdley at 2051. The train will also call at Arley Station at 0820, returning at 2107. Full fares are £50 for adults and £25 for children, but discounts for holders of Senior, Family and Young Persons Railcards will apply, and Chiltern’s ‘Groupsave’ will also allow 4 people to travel for the price of 2. Tickets can be purchased from Chiltern’s Business Travel Team on 01494 420117 (Monday to Friday 0930-1630), but hurry as space will be limited. Chiltern hopes that if this train is successful future ‘days out’ trains can be run during summer, holiday and Christmas times. Chiltern Railways - www.chilternrailways.co.uk

Dear Editor, I’ve been following your correspondence about litter with interest. I’ve come to the conclusion that it is mostly kids who throw down their litter, because when I walk down Wyre Hill I see lots of sweet papers and those horrible long thin lolly wrappers. I would like to know why the manufacturers put everything in plastic. Couldn’t they use paper, then at least they would eventually rot. By the way, I do pick them up – a good handful a day. But it would be even better if they weren’t thrown down in the first place. S Bailey

Support our soldiers in Afghanistan
Community News
At the last Town Council meeting we were addressed by Mrs. Susan Leake, the mother of a young soldier serving in Afghanistan. She told us of a scheme to send to men and women serving in places such as Afghanistan, parcels containing basic items we take for granted, such as tooth paste, which they are not able to obtain over there. The entire Council agreed that we should do all we can to support those who are risking their lives daily. If anyone is willing to donate any items such as toothpaste, soap, and any such creature comforts which we take for granted, they should contact the Mayor's Secretary Karen Raine on 01299 400157 or email on secretaryc@bewdley.org.uk and make arrangements to deliver their gift to the Guildhall. We are waiting to be contacted by the organisation that has been set up to have the parcels delivered to these soldiers, many of whom do not have families to send them such items. I do sincerely hope the Town will respond generously to this appeal. Councillor Derek Killingworth, Mayor of Bewdley
Bewdley Townswomen's Guild
At the June meeting Margaret Cooper spoke to the guild about going to school in the 19th century and the beginning of the national board schools. The theatre group enjoyed 'Arsenic and Old Lace' at the Rose Theatre. The craft group are knitting squares to make blankets to send to a charity in Africa for young abandoned mothers. Sue Price, delegate and five observers attended the Townswomen's National Conference at the ICC in Birmingham on the 26th June. There is no meeting of the guild in August but a skittles evening is to be arranged for members and guests. For more information phone 01299 401 235
OctoberFest 2009
As we enjoy the summer weather (am I tempting fate here?) it is that time of year again to remind you that all the festival fringe events throughout the month of October will be summarised as OctoberFest. Last year 8000 flyers were distributed throughout the Wyre Forest and beyond and many said that they were surprised how much is going on in the town. There is always great music in the pubs around the town and last year’s blues event at the Packhorse was a welcome addition. However, the one area missing is comedy. This year we are ahead of ourselves as a number of people have already told us about their plans including a Performance Poet, a Cricket Dinner at the Royal Foresters, a Petanque competition, an Art Exhibition at the Quay Gallery, Creative Writing at the Museum, Apple pressing & Cider festival, and a French Market & Pumpkin festival at the end of the month. So get your thinking caps on and let us know what you are planning so that your event can be included in this year’s flyer. All Saints' and Wribbenhall Together
Received this very week: “Just a note to say how pleased I am to have spotted your name in the Your Community section of The Shuttle and to have leaned about the "drop in" sessions you offer at All Saints' Church Wribbenhall on Mondays. After many very uncomfortable years with increasingly distressing immobility I have been diagnosed - officially - as having Osteoarthritis. I noticed that representatives from Arthritis Care would be at the church. It was a pleasure-and a great psychological boost-to talk with "fellow sufferers". They where able to furnish me with informative literature and, importantly, personal experiences of this awful condition. My experience of your "Monday initiative" has been a very good one; not only an excellent use of the facilities at the Church but also a very welcoming atmosphere, promoted by the lovely Monday Girls, plus their very good tea and (chocolate) biscuits. I do hope that others leaving your sessions feel as uplifted and generally supported as I did." (Thanks to Pauline -- a Bewdley resident). This letter was received just a few days following a lovely phone call from a gentleman who had "popped in" to our Aid
For the Older Person Day. He just had to ring and tell me that he had sorted four different problems at one go, which calmed his concerns and has made his life much more bearable. Great testimonies and I am grateful for the time they both took to letting us know. BUT how many more of those resident in our local & wider communities are struggling to live, trying to cope with medical, emotional, life shattering experiences that are proving difficult, if not virtually impossible, to accept and live with? And, I wonder, of those how many have taken the time to accept the open hand that our/this project offers? Have you? If only we could reach every one. We are, as you can read, making a difference in people's lives and it is this knowledge that drives us to carry on and make sure as much information, support, friendship & advice is available; the Monday Girls look forward to meeting you on one of the Mondays, if only for a cup of tea or coffee and an opportunity to catch up on your news. There is never any charge, just a desire to bring light where & when darkness falls or you have news to be shared and enjoyed. Do check our posters/ report in "The Shuttle" and do join us on your next free Monday.

When Experience really Counts!
On June 14th a crew of Bewdley rowers brought Gold Medals home from the National Veterans Championships held in Nottingham. They rowed in the Over 55 coxless four category at Holme Pierrepoint on the vast purpose-built lake, which has several lanes abreast of each other. This means that up to six boats can race simultaneously, giving a very different feel from most regattas where the width of the river only accommodates two boats together. It was an exciting race 1000m final - and our rowers lead from the start, but did have to find extra power towards the end to fend off a challenge. To see these gentlemen in action, just take a stroll by the river at 7.30am on a Sunday!

Local author, Tony Bailey has released a timely book on ‘How To Survive Redundancy’. Essentially a modern take on the self-help book providing practical advice and a degree of reassurance; the book has been three years in the writing. Bewdley Open Studios 2009
Community News
The third annual Bewdley Open Studios art event took place over the weekend of 13-14th June. This time the throngs of art-loving visitors walking round were blessed with fine weather. Over 50 artists participated at some 14 sites in Bewdley, mostly concentrated at the Museum and the centre. Large numbers of Bewdley residents and people from outside came into town. 2,500 visits to the Museum were recorded over the two days. With the improvements effected during the winter, the Museum was able to host many more artists, in addition to the resident artists and craft persons. Painters, sculptors, photographers and specialists in ceramic art, textiles, etching, stained glass and wood were on hand to discuss their work, some of them actually working on a piece over the weekend. Four workshops, arranged for the weekends before and after the event, were well attended. Two of our artists, Cynthia Pearson and Judith Price, donated superb pieces as raffle prizes and all the tickets were sold. Cynthia has now retired from the organising committee and will be sorely missed. With raffle profits and 10% commission on sales, we expect that we shall again be able to contribute well over £1,000 to Friends’ funds. However, even without this “profit” the event is worthwhile for the enjoyment experienced by visitors and artists alike.

Brass Rubbing
The Friends are delighted to offer drop-in Brass Rubbing sessions in the museum education room every Wednesday afternoon (1pm to 4pm) and Sundays (10.30am-4pm) throughout the summer. This is a chance to use some of the museum's collection of larger brasses and make a really professional rubbing on black paper with gold, silver or copper coloured crayons – a small charge will apply, guidance will be given by trained volunteers. There may be additional days in the school holidays, please look out for the information boards outside the museum or ring the museum for further information. (403573). We are always on the lookout for more volunteers for e.g. the brass rubbing, gallery stewards, air raid shelter guides etc. Please ring the museum if you have any spare time and would like to help.
Every other house
The Friends of Bewdley Museum hope you will come to their new exhibition featuring Bewdley’s pubs past and present. Find out how beer is made, play some pub games and discover the secrets of some of our familiar and not so familiar pubs. The exhibition opens on 15th August until 27th September in the Wyre Forest Gallery. On the Bank holiday weekend we will be hosting guided walks around the town centre, focusing particularly on pubs of the past. These will take place at 2pm on Sat. 29th, Sunday 30th and Monday 31st August, starting from the front of the museum.

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS
Community News
TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 29 JUNE 2009
“Support Our Soldiers” Having heard a member of the public make representations about the “Support our Soldiers” scheme, Councillors agreed that they would wish to be associated with it and on a personal level would volunteer to promote it within Bewdley. Support our Soldiers operates in various towns across Britain and provides support to serving Army personnel eg those presently in Afghanistan. It involves members of the public collecting together small items such as toiletries or magazines which can be put into shoeboxes or small parcels and sent off. This is a real morale booster and is especially appreciated by those soldiers who may not have families back home. More information about the scheme is to be obtained from Bromsgrove who already have a similar scheme up and running. Pedestrianisation of Severnside North The Mayor received a Petition from certain residents in Severnside North asking for it to be pedestrianised. This is not the first time that this issue has arisen. The road is very popular with visitors at all times of the year. With tables and chairs now in place along parts of the pavement and by the railings, pedestrians find it easiest to walk in the road. However, as not all residents and businesses along there had back entrances, they would still need to gain access for loading and unloading and for emergency service vehicles. Though desirable from an amenity point of view it was unlikely that the Highway Authority or the Emergency Services would support a total ban on vehicles. Consequently the Council agreed to investigate pedestrianisation allowing access at limited times and for certain purposes only. Town Centre painting of Buildings Councillors had received many complaints from members of the public about the colour of the exterior painting of a shop in Load Street who thought it was out of keeping with the remainder of the buildings there. On the positive side, an empty shop had been filled and was trading but on the other, the colour was not to everyone’s taste. However, having checked the legal position there was apparently nothing in law which could be done quickly by the Council to require the owner to change the colour. Flood Relief Funding Councillors had been interested in a report that gone to Wyre Forest District Council setting out how, following the floods in 2007, monies from the Government and other agencies amounting to £401,688.69 had been spent and how much was left for future projects. They agreed the Town Clerk should write to the District Council to get a full break down of the figures and to ensure that local volunteer Flood Action Groups were being fully supported. Future Town Council meetings: 3 August, 1 September, 5 October, 2 November, 30 November, 4 January Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall and Load Street Car Park, in the Library and the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk.and on the My Parish page of www.worcestershire.gov.uk TOWN COUNCIL NEWS IS PRODUCED AND PUBLISHED BY BEWDLEY TOWN COUNCIL

August in the forest
First news from Grow With Wyre, which aims to restore and envigorate the landscape, history and communities in and around the Wyre Forest. The new Community Discovery Centre is visibly taking shape and is set to become the hub of community events as from next year. We’re not just waiting for completion of the building, but would love volunteers to join us in organising events such as the Seed Gathering Festival on 3rd/4th October. We’ll need help with publicity, children’s activities, demonstrations of fruit juicing and woodland skills. At the beginning of this month the scheme ran a free Orchard Renovation Training Course to enable orchard owners and contractors to care for old fruit trees. These support many rare and wonderful species such as the Chicken-inthe-woods fungus, the Lesser spotted Woodpecker and the Noble Chafer; this one caught on camera by Rosemary Winnall last month enjoying its brief adult life following years of eating dead wood in the dark!
There is plenty to see in the forest in the summer months. Walk in the Woods will resume on August 5th (and the first Wednesday of each month) and is a great opportunity to venture down less familiar tracks. Meet at the Visitor Centre on at 10.30am for a 2 hour walk of not more than 4 miles, costing £4. Holiday events continue on Tuesdays and Fridays as follows: August 4th Creepy Crawlies Come on safari armed with a bug box to find the

Calling Bewdley residents to support
89 year old raising funds for the Millbrook Suite
A 89 year old Bewdley resident, Alan Birch, is to take a sponsored walk up Snowdon on the 26th August to raise funds towards much needed new Hair Loss Prevention System for the Millbrook Suite at Kidderminster Hospital. The Kidderminster Hospital League of Friends, together with the Kidderminster Shuttle, is running the appeal to raise £150,000 for this cancer resource centre. After 10 years service, the suite is in need of modernization. In total the works will cost £250,000 of which the League has already committed £100,000. Alan is an ex-member of the 3rd Bewdley Scouts and this is his third sponsored event in the past six years. “I am being joined by my friends and former scouts, David Thomas, Pete Johnson, Andrew Franklin and Rob Williams” said Alan. “Although we are all getting on in years, we are all going up Snowdon, which we climbed when we were quite young.” Any donation or sponsorship, no matter how small will be greatly appreciated and go to the cancer centre. Last year over 5,000 patients visited the centre and its associated clinics. Donations can be made directly to Barclays Bank in Bewdley. Cheques made payable to Mr Alan Birch, Snowdon Sponsored Walk.
Thank you Severn Valley Railway
The management and staff of the SVR showed great kindness to the residents of our Stephenson Place community on July 1st. We live in this retirement complex of 37 properties and most days we watch the Severn Valley trains puff over the railway viaduct. Imagine our delight when General Manager Nick Ralls and his staff gave us an afternoon out and helped us ride from Bewdley to Bridgnorth and gave us complimentary light refreshments. We all had such fun, and we could not possibly have done it without the TLC of the SVR. Thank you, Severn Valley Railway. That was a very kind thing that you gave us. John Williams
