Bewdley Rowing Club

It was three years ago, almost to the day, that I had a conversation with a work colleague that changed my life in Bewdley. He asked if I wanted to join him in a Pub and Club rowing team. Without hesitation, I said yes. Madly in love with the River Severn, I had for many years wanted to enjoy sport on its waters, but didn’t know how to join the rowing club. I had wanted to enter the Pub and Club Regatta, but couldn’t find three others who felt the same way. So, finally, this was my chance. We had a mixed team of two men and two women, who had six lessons in basic rowing during the month of May. Our initial outing on the water displayed no rowing ability at all, to the point of making our previously teetotal coach/cox turn to her first drink in years! But, with more coaching, our confidence grew and we began to really enjoy ourselves. On Regatta day itself, we lost our one and only race to the eventual winners of the mixed competition. Despite our defeat, we had a great day in the sunshine and I chose to stay on as a member of the rowing club and begin more serious training; the best thing I’ve ever done. I have rowed at events across the Midlands, on the Thames in London and even the New Danube Canal in Vienna! I’m a late starter in this sport, having joined at the age of 38 and will probably never be a champion, but I’ve won a couple of races, am fitter than ever and have developed a competitive spirit never experienced in school PE lessons. Maybe most importantly, I have made many friends, who include the very people who beat us three years ago! If you want to take part in this year’s Pub and Club Regatta, visit Bewdley Rowing Club’s website www.bewdleyrc.co.uk or enter “Bewdley Pub and Club” on Facebook. Training starts on Good Friday. The Regatta will be held on Saturday 4th June. We look forward to seeing you! Chris Kowalik

Editorial

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley.

It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month.

You may have heard that joke about the man who prayed fervently to win the lottery. “I really need the money, God”, he gasped. “The house is about to be repossessed, the children are crying with hunger and the dog left weeks ago”. “You certainly sound like a deserving case”, says God,“I’ll see what I can do”. Several Saturdays pass without any wins and the man has another go at God. “Look, help me out here”, replies the Almighty, “Buy a lottery ticket!”.

I was reminded of this joke when my brother came over from Northamptonshire. We walked down to the town and discussed the problem of the empty shops there. Later I reflected that until I could put my hand on my heart and say I never went elsewhere for things I could buy in Bewdley, I didn’t have a leg to stand on.

Like a lot of us, I grumble about the traffic. Have I got in my car when I could have walked or gone on the bus? Yes, of course I have. I’ve said,“Why doesn’t the council do something about….?” But I’ve never been to a council meeting. I tut about how the young people hang around the streets. You’ll find a plea inside this edition for someone to take up the Scout and Guide banner for the town. I could go on, but I think it’s clear that to have a moral grumble about something, I should make sure I shouldn’t be grumbling about myself.

Your financial or fund raising expertise could help shape the future of the Bewdley

Bewdley Development Trust is the community group that works to make our town a great place to live, work and visit. It has a board of dedicated volunteer directors backed by people who give their time for free - for the good of Bewdley. Key role The Trust needs help monitoring its finances – it is not an onerous or time consuming task – just one where your specialist skills could play a vital role. The Trust is also looking for someone with fund raising experience to join the team. Exciting times Bewdley Development Trust has a history of delivering projects in and around the Wyre Forest. It is not resting on its laurels and there are a number of exciting and challenging developments in the pipeline. What is involved The board meets around every two months and needs a clear financial review of its operation that includes a mixture of grants and revenue. Our current Chartered Accountant is stepping down after working with the us for over 6 years. The role of fund raising is new and reflects the importance of this area in the Trust’s future. The reward Like everyone on the board, there is no financial reward. However, being part of a team that helps to brings real benefits to our local communities is a great reward in itself. Bewdley Cherries

Members of the Grow with Wyre team, the Wyre Forest Study Group, and the Food Group are planning several events during the cherry blossom and fruiting season. We are planning a "Cherry Fair" in Bewdley to revive interest in the once thriving local harvest of cherries during June and July. The traditional cherry fair was held on Saint Anne's Day, July 26th and was set up by the Edward IV Town Charter of 1472. There is no mention of cherries in the Charter, but the date is the nearest of the ancient Fair Days to the cherry fruiting season, which lasts from late May to nearly August. There was a crop in 2010, the first for many years, but we cannot be certain of fruit this year. Nevertheless, we have to plan ahead in any case. People will be aware of an increasing interest in old varieties of apples, but there is pressing urgency to establish the existence of old varieties of cherry. The idea of the event is that people bring along samples of their own fruit for possible identification and to build up a collection of varieties growing locally. Then during cherry blossom time, we are planning to hold walks among the local blossom and also to help identify cherry varieties. This is a difficult task and we need all the help we can get, so look out for further notices of times and venue. Brian Stephens (01299 402524, brian.stephens@homecall.co.uk)

This is the beginning of the main tourist season and from the 1st April we will be open every day between 10 am and 4.30 pm. At the same time, the Museum and the Food Foundry Tea Shop will be throwing open its doors to the tourists and locals who love to experience the delights that Bewdley has to offer.

We aim to offer the best service possible to those who come in for information and we are pleased to announce that this year for the first time we will be selling tickets for the Severn Valley Railway. As in other years we will be selling discounted tickets for the West Midlands Safari Park. In addition, we will have tickets for many of the local musical events in and around the area, including the Wyre Forest Symphony Orchestra. For those looking to go further afield, we will have tickets for coach trips and tours.

We were wondering if anyone could help one of regular visitors, Reggie, the English setter. Reggie loves exploring Bewdley but is Sorry to start with bad news. In my last letter I said I have a new boyfriend: well, very disappointed that the TIC has so little sadly he’s passed away. Bewdley Youth Café needs your support

Like many other charities Bewdley Youth Café is struggling in its efforts to raise money - without grants/contributions from various organisations it will be forced to close. There are very few facilities in the town for the young people. The Café has provided a much needed facility for them, but without the support of the local community there is a very serious danger it will not be able to continue. The only contributions locally have been from the Town Council who has supported them every year, the Civic Society, the Co-op and the President of Bewdley Rotary Club who gave money from his own pocket. Kidderminster and District Youth Trust awarded a grant to cover last year's rent, and the Police have been totally supportive from the outset. The Café was fortunate to receive a large grant from the National Lottery for the renovation of the site and to equip the Café. There are those who criticize the Café; they ask why it is not open during the day. Firstly, the young people are at school (it is open when they are on holiday) and secondly, a lack of money. They have one paid member of staff who already works far more hours than she is paid for and a group of wonderful volunteers, and of course the trustees who all do their bit voluntarily; three of the local churches are assisting by overseeing Friday evening but there is still not enough help to open for longer. “We have approached many organisations asking if they would like to use the Café during the day; so far no one has taken us up on this.” “We need support from the local community”, said Derek Killingworth. “We have nearly 500 young Members; are they really to be deprived of something that is needed?” Just come in look at the Café; talk to the young people and make your own minds up whether you want to support them to make sure they can keep going.

Easter Fun at Bewdley Museum

Bewdley Museum opens for the new season on Friday 1st April.

Over 130,000 visitors enjoyed this ever popular attraction last year and Wyre Forest District Council has an exciting programme lined up for 2011.

Craft work will take centre stage with a new Crafts in Practice event every third Sunday of the month between April and October. Our resident crafts people and guests will put on special demonstrations between 12 noon and 3.30pm. Come and enjoy the first event on 17th April featuring French Polisher Eric Lyons and Cabinet Maker Lionel Gee. Woodland crafts, willow work and basket making will all be new on the menu this year.

There will be plenty to keep the kids occupied over Easter, ‘Drop in’ craft activities weekdays in the holidays between 12 noon and 3pm and an Easter Egg Hunt (£2 per child) on Sunday 24th April.

What a bonus to have such a fantastic venue on your doorstep! Come and make the most of your local attraction over the Easter holidays.

The museum is open daily from 10am – 4.30pm. Entry is Free. For the full programme of 2011 activities, exhibitions and events visit the website http://www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk/museum or request a free brochure from the Bewdley Tourist Information Centre 01299 404740.

Bewdley Librar y

We are now several weeks into our new system of working with the much ‘anticipated’ self service machine, and apart from the day when I was opening up alone for the first time and it flashed on, only for the screen to immediately go blank, all seems to be going relatively well.

We have a lot of footfall from Bewdley’s senior citizens, and I want to pay tribute to how well the vast majority of them have coped with self service. Many were unsure at first, however on seeing that several books can be ‘read’ by the machine at once, they changed from sceptical to impressed in the blink of an eye! And the pride on the faces of those who are nervous to try and then find out they can use it after all!

One or two people voiced concern that they wouldn’t be able to talk to us anymore, but there are still real people working at the library and we need human contact, so don’t be shy – come and see us!

Heavy Horses in the forest

Those of us lucky enough to see the horses working in the forest at the beginning of last month will have marvelled at their size, strength and patience. I saw Ella, Jacob and Remco pulling effortlessly at the cart piled with oak logs. Ella and Jacob are Percherons, Remco a Belgian. Their owner, Doug Joiner, told me that their specialised training takes about six months; certainly these horses were expert loggers. The horses are used not because they are a wonderful sight, but because they cause so much less disturbance than the heavy machinery which is the alternative. The deep ruts and mud around the part of the forest where the horses are working is an indication of what machines do; Ella, Jacob and Remco were leaving only hoof-prints. They have even been used at an archaeological site in the Forest of Dean. Their jingling harness also sounds a lot nicer than roaring diesel engines!

The Scouts and Guides of Bewdley

People in Bewdley will have seen the Scouts and Guides of Bewdley and Wribbenhall parading through the town to St Anne’s church on what can be a cold rainy, sometimes sunny, Sunday morning, but always with their dedicated leaders and being led by the wonderful Bewdley District Scout and Guide Band. Did you know that there are only a handful of Scout and Guide bands left in this country and we have one?

What an achievement for such a small town!

These leaders are no different from you. We all work, some of us full time; most of us have or did have small children. The only difference is that we have all experienced the wonderful world of Scouting or Guiding. In my time as a leader with 3rd Bewdley (Wribbenhall) Scout Group I have experienced many countries, camped all over the country, but most important, have met and worked with wonderful children – some now well over 40! The pleasure I get when I walk down Load Street and a grown man says “Hello, remember me? Cubs and Scouts were great. My kids are doing it now. Are you?” Up until now I would have said yes, but from October I have taken a back seat and from May 3rd Bewdley will be losing their Akela after over 20 years. Being a leader is fun, rewarding, but most of all it gives you the chance to meet adults and children that will give you wonderful memories. If you would like to find out more please give me a ring on 0782 details. Our cub pack is nearly 90. Let’s make it to our century!

Normally April would be considered to be an excellent month to start gardening and growing vegetables. These days it’s often easier to buy hardened off plants from a nursery and plant them directly into a prepared and fertilized bed. This is especially true for an early crop of Brussels sprouts, however for a main crop start sowing seeds now. In well manured ground start sowing parsnip seeds after adding a little general fertilizer. The potatoes that have been chitting are now ready for going out into trenches that are 12inches wide by 9 deep; these should be lined with a few inches of well rotted manure, garden compost or leaf mould enriched with fertilizer.

April is a great month for starting onions on their way, use sets from nursery and cover with a little soil to keep in place. Be thinking of starting salad crops: salad onions, lettuce and radish. For a little variety try your hand at getting artichokes started towards the end of the month and if space permits some asparagus. To round off the offerings be a culinary expert with a few herbs, as the soil warms and dries a little think of sowing dill, chervil, chives, marjoram, parsley and sorrel.

Tails of a Veterinary Practice –

life at Rive rside Vets as seen by Gavin the practice cat.

Spring seems to finally be on the way again and I am pleased to report that I am once again able to find plenty of patches of sun in which to have my many daily cat naps. As fleas also enjoy the spring weather, I have been forced to undergo having a flea and worming spot-on treatment put onto my skin. I do not like this at all, but I have to endure it as I do not want to get fleas or worms. My humans treat me once a month to make sure that I stay clear of these parasites and as long as I get a treat afterwards I suppose I can tolerate it. My humans have been busy recently and have been to Birmingham to a big meeting for Vets and Vet Nurses. Here they can keep their knowledge up to date and find out more about the latest advances and equipment. They all enjoyed themselves and came back full of new knowledge and with lots of free pens. I’m not sure why but all of my humans seem to be very concerned with having pens and get very upset when they cannot find one to write with. I have no need of pens; being a very good typist myself. Time for a snooze in the sun. More from me again soon, Gavin Sponsored bike ride Bewdley to Evesham, (a distance of 32 miles) Janice Bell is cycling to Evesham on 9th April 2011 to raise money for Holy Family Church building fund. The Friends of Bewdley Museum explore a virtual world.

The Friends of Bewdley Museum have a web page which sits within the www.bewdley.org.uk website. If you search for “Bewdley”, the Development Trust website generally comes at the top of the list, and if you search for “Bewdley Museum” you will find our page on the site nearly at the top of the list. We are currently looking at updating the website with our latest news and activities. If you have a similar organisation, perhaps we can link to each other’s websites. We would like to bring our Friends Group into the new world of social media with links onto Facebook and followers on Twitter. The internet can seem scary to those of us educated with pens, papers and books. When I started work in the late 70’s, I remember the excitement the first office basic word processor created, and as for having our own photocopier – happiness! Social media is an awful word to describe the new methods that we have of keeping in touch with each other, but it is so wonderful to find people you have not seen or heard of for years and years and see how they are now. The internet can bring friends together and we would like our web page help to bring us as the “Friends of Bewdley Museum” together. Please start to take a look at it and bookmark the page as one of your favourites. We have an email address too at fobmuseum@tiscali.co.uk. Why not email us your details and we will add you to our Friends, and you can receive up to the minute details of events, volunteer opportunities and fund raising activities? So far we have had contacts from several areas of the world with people seeking and giving information. If you have any tips or tricks to help us explore these new methods of communication, please email us. We still, of course, are happy to hear from you by telephone or letter, or please just pop into the museum and see us there. We can perhaps discover the worlds of blogs, posts and web links together, but for now you will have to excuse me, I have some “wheat” to “harvest” and “cows” to “milk”! Last month I went to the Worcestershire NGS Annual General Meeting. NGS stands for National Garden Scheme, a nation-wide organisation, which helps garden owners open to the public to raise money for charities such as Macmillan Nurses. I went to the meeting because, last May, whilst looking round my garden, I decided to join this happy group. And then came The Big Freeze! During January and February, my green and verdant patch of garden was a brown, bare and decimated wilderness! Lots of my New Zealand plants have given up the ghost, as I had been lulled into a false sense of security that global warming meant every winter was going to be mild; and the heavy clay soil is a quagmire! When you read this I shall have only about seven weeks to sort it all out before it opens to the public on May 21st. Shall I manage it? Yes, of course! Because already there are signs of life, with little green buds emerging on the trees, bulbs flowering, shoots sprouting and most of all, lots of new plants ordered to replace the dead ones. But much clearing and weeding still to do, paths to renovate and cakes to bake for the teas. Apparently, many NGS garden owners feel a bit disheartened, as they look down their patch in late winter, but my, what wonderful places they become by the time their date in the NGS Yellow Book arrives! Rob, Nigel and Clive are celebrating the end of their time in Bewdley, as they finish the work to make St Anne’s secure for future generations. Their view of Bewdley has been an unusual one, as they’ve spent most of the time 150ft above our heads. However, they all agreed it had been a good place to work. “The people in Bewdley are all friendly”, said one of the plumbers, Rob. “That’s mostly how we rate a job”. They belong to a very old and distinguished trade. Plumbers (originally “workers with lead”) who do the sort of specialised work required on important – often listed – buildings, have to have not only the qualifications needed by domestic plumbers. They then have to find a firm which will, in a way unchanged since the Middle Ages, attach them to an experienced and skilled “master” and gradually allow them more freedom to undertake tasks on their own. These men take great pride in their work and have worked on Croome Abbey and various churches in Worcestershire as well as further afield. Now they have moved on, leaving us with a tower roof that should last sixty years or more.

Dear Editor, I love receiving my copy of the Bridge (Thank you Stuart!) and keeping up to date with the Town’s news. However, over the last few months there seems to have been a recurring theme ...dog fouling. Firstly Gavin the Cat asked that vet customers utilise the free dog poo bags and the bin, when exercising their dogs who may be visiting the premises, following complaints about fouling along Severnside South, and now in the March edition, Gabi has highlighted that Frazzle may have become ill through dog faeces. I have two young children and have had to resort to banning them from using the lower path along Severnside South due the amount of dog mess regularly found on that stretch. The High Street and Lax Lane are similarly fouled. I do not think that we can focus any

blame for this disgusting mess on anyone other than Bewdley residents...the tourists come and go, the mess doesn’t. I know there are plenty of responsible dog owners in Bewdley that always clean up after their pets, but there are some that do not. I appeal to you to change your ways before it is not only Frazzle, but a child that becomes ill because of this...then the investment in a pack of cheap nappy bags will seem like a good investment you wish you had made. I also appeal to the Council to step up enforcement. A recent Freedom of Information request revealed that WFDC had not issued a single penalty notice for this in the last 12 months and sadly could not even tell me how many complaints had been received about dog mess in the area. Severnside is one of the most popular areas of Bewdley and both residents and tourists should do everything we can to keep it that way. You know who you are...do something about it. Gill Davenport

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 7th MARCH 2011 Royal Wedding Celebrations – 29th April The Town Council is organising a “Mad Hatters’ Tea Party” in celebration of the Royal Wedding on 29th April. This will be in the Jubilee Gardens at 3.00pm. Please bring your picnic and come and watch and listen to Bewdley’s own concert band and enjoy the entertainment provided, hopefully to include a conjuror or magician for the children. You could even come dressed as a character from Alice in Wonderland – though that’s not obligatory! Grants to Local Community Organisations Councillors agreed to make small grants to a number of local organisations including Community Transport Helpline, Citizens’ Advice Bureau, Bewdley Carnival, Bewdley In Bloom and many others, all of whom do so much voluntary work for the community. It was also agreed to set aside a further sum to cover any further applications that might be made during the summer and autumn. Past Mayor’s Photographs The Mayor made a proposal that was agreed by the Council that there should be a display of photographs of past Mayors of Bewdley at the Guildhall. All past Mayors would be invited to provide their own photograph plus a donation to cover the cost of a suitable frame. This scheme would therefore be at no cost to the Council, but it would help to reinforce the idea of civic pride and history in Bewdley. Town Crier The Council is still looking for anyone who feels they have a sufficiently strong voice and could take on the role of Town Crier. Flood Barriers The Council were informed that the Environment Agency is to carry out a review of the effectiveness of the present system of providing temporary flood barriers at the Beales Corner/Stourport Road junction. The EA plan to meet with the Council in July to discuss their findings and also with local residents who could be affected by any changes. Future Town Council meetings Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall on Mondays (except where indicated) at 7.30pm are: 4th April, 3rd May (Tuesday), 6th June and 4th July. The Annual Town Meeting (of the Townspeople) will take place on Monday 18th April The Annual Council Meeting (Mayor Making) will take place on Friday 13th May Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. The Green Corner Not Sure What to Do?

If you are not sure what you could do to cut your energy usage there is some help at hand.

Transition Bewdley Energy Group www.transitionbewdley.org is organising another local energy trail on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th May. The first trail last November was well received by those who attended. This one will again provide an opportunity to visit local examples of renewable energy in action. Final details are still being sorted at the time of writing, but it is hoped that there will be opportunities to see solar water heating and electricity generation, wood fuelled boilers, heat pumps, waste water management, insulation, etc. Homeowners or other relevant persons should be present at each venue to share their first hand experiences and it is hoped that local suppliers will be also be on hand to give expert help. Further details are available via Bewdley Development Trust at Snuffmill Warehouse in Park Lane: on 01299 405516 or info@bewdley.org.uk. Prior booking will be essential. If you have a renewable energy installation or similar that you feel might be of interest for future energy trails, please get in touch, again via Bewdley Development Trust. The Energy Group also continues to offer free home energy checks for local residents. One of their volunteer Energy Champions will visit your home and give help in calculating your carbon footprint, saving energy (and money), exploring new technologies, etc. Further details and bookings are again available via Bewdley Development Trust (details above). Good hunting!

A mystery solved

Brian Smith

The name "Thos. A. Mobberley" on the St. Anne's War Memorial has puzzled people for some years, as no one of that name can be found in any records to have been in World War One.

A man called Albert Mobberley had lived in Bewdley for at least twenty years, appearing in the census entries in 1891, 1901 and 1911, living with his uncle Joseph Mobberley. They were cattle drovers. Albert's father was Thomas Bird and his mother Mary Mobberley and although they weren't married, they had registered their son as Thomas Albert Bird, born 17th May 1882.

In 1914, Albert enlisted with the King's Shropshire Light Infantry Regiment, but after about three weeks he was discharged, as his right arm had been badly affected by burns in childhood. As Albert Bird, he tried to get into the Royal Army Service Corps, but was again rejected. Eventually, as Thomas A. Bird, he was able to enlist with the Herefordshire Regiment. At some point, he was transferred to the Gloucestershire Regiment and served in the 14th Battalion. Albert was killed in action on 29th October 1917 in Belgium. He is on the War Memorial as Mobberley rather than Bird presumably because that is how he was known locally.

April in the forest

Now is the season of birdsong, replacing the sounds of the chainsaw and crunch of breaking branches, which accompanied a busy winter of woodland management in the Wyre Forest!

However, bare soil will soon be covered by new plant growth, because it is boom time again. Coppiced trees and newly-laid hedges will produce new shoots and provide excellent cover for nesting birds in years to come. Hedges are wonderful minihabitats which, though man-made, mimic the conditions found in scrub and woodland edge and linking or extending areas of woodland to make “wildlife corridors”. I have been looking at some lovely examples recently – masses of hazel catkins taking over from the autumn’s show of hawthorn berries and promising a good crop of nuts for squirrels and mice next autumn.

This month we should see the first butterflies of spring. The brimstones spend the winter hibernating among ivy leaves, in which they are wonderfully camouflaged. They are strong fliers and, when they wake, will be heading along the rides and hedges to refuel with nectar, then they will search out and lay their eggs singly on the leaves of common or alder buckthorn. The Wyre Forest Discovery Centre’s events this month:

Sat 2nd April Plant Supports. 2 to 5pm. Adult craft course. £18 per person to include all materials. As the growing season gets underway make a plant supporting wigwam out of willow for your favourite climbing plants. Booking essential.

Easter Holidays

Tues April 12th Teddy Bear Trail. Start anytime between 10.30 to 12 midday. £3 per child. Any age. Make your teddy a forest crown, take him on a bear hunt and finish with a zip wire crossing! Bring a teddy (or other cuddly). No booking required.

Weds April 13th. A family Felt Making Workshop to produce coloured felts, which will later be incorporated, along with willow, hazel, found objects, fabric and feathers into large sculptures of a Dragonfly, Woodpecker, Moth and Bat for the Discovery Centre. Choose a morning (10am to 12noon) or afternoon (1pm to 3pm) session. £3.50 per child. Booking essential.

Fri April 15th Community Discovery Centre Open Morning plus drop-in children’s activity. £2 per child. No booking required.

Tues 19th April Fun with Charcoal. Make charcoal on the fire and use it to draw a souvenir picture of the forest. 10.30am – 12noon, £3.50 per child. Booking essential.

Fri April 22nd Easter Trail (Families). Become an intrepid hunter, follow the clues to earn your Easter treat! All children to be accompanied by an adult. £3 per child. No booking required. 10.30am-12noon.

Our regular events include Forest Friends – a group of pre-school children and their carers meeting every term-time Thursday from 10am to 11am for forest-based play and activities. Then there are Health Walks every Tuesday and Sunday starting from the Visitor Centre at 11am to build fitness at a gentle pace. For more information on any of these or bookings please ring 01299 266929. Linda Iles, Forestry Commission
