BEWDLEY NEEDS YOU
Editorial
The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley.
It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month. Talk, talk, talk talk…..
I have been thinking about conversations recently. I mentioned in a past editorial that I enjoy talking to complete strangers in my attempt to get people to write something for the Bridge. I was reflecting the other day on how I had had quite long talks with a surprising range of people over the course of two days. There were some six year olds on the subject of learning to read, two stunningly articulate teenagers about the meaning of life and the universe and why teachers were so exercised about correct school uniform; and with a ninety two year old on wartime cooking. A linguist might remark on the different ”voices” used in each of the conversations; a sociologist would notice the different demographics of these people; a psychologist would see what core beliefs were displayed. I just know that being able to have these human contacts is very, very important to us social animals; in Bewdley we are fortunate to have a real sense of community that fosters this. The Bridge tries to play a part in creating a community spirit and has monthly indications in its reports of how this community doesn’t just happen. Many people spend a lot of time organising and running clubs and societies; lots of us attend them. During August we often take a rest from them, but a wander through the town soon shows that the talking goes on.
Here’s a resolution: I’m going to see how many cheery exchanges I can get in on one walk through Bewdley. In the meantime, enjoy your Bewdley summer! Margaret

Modest Glory
Community News
One of the glories of St Anne’s Church is its coffee bar – quiet, unassuming and modest – it isn’t noisy, pushy or loud; it doesn’t run promotions, special offers and doesn’t have a reward scheme.
Instead it offers a genuine, gentle and warm welcome to anyone who enters the building for whatever reason – and many do: sometimes out of curiosity, wondering what the building looks like from the inside. Others call in to browse the fair-trade stall, pick up a copy of The Bridge magazine, use the church photocopier, dodge the rain, snow, or sun – depending on the time of year. Some pop into the church itself for some quiet – and sometimes to have a cup of tea. We don’t charge for drinks – and don’t want to be in any sort of competition with our neighbouring, excellent tea and coffee parlours – we just ask for a donation to cover costs.
It is made possible through the kindness of volunteers who give their time. If you feel that you could help by being part of this group then we’d love to hear from you. The only qualifications you need are human warmth and friendliness. Contact Cate Gillespie on 01299 402151, who co-ordinates our volunteers, for further information.
Desperately Seeking ... Aunty Flo
Revd. James
My uncle, Harold Page, married Florence Danby in 1944. They lived at 38 Welch Gate. Sadly, Harold left her for another woman, by whom he had two daughters. I have recently met these cousins and what we'd all like to know is: "What happened to Flo?" She carried on living in Bewdley and in 1968 married Henry Samuel Williams of 27 Severn Side South Bewdley and may even have married again. Surely someone in our town remembers her!
Flo, born in 1920, was the youngest of 9 children: Cecil (1897) married Florence Lewis and had Donald Elsie (1899) married Harold Chadbourne and had Robert and Margaret Samuel (1901) married Amy Jackson and had Doreen Stanley (Alfred) Baldwin (1904) never married Wilfred (1906) married Elise Price and had Patricia and Maurice Dorothy (1910) married Leslie Saunders Charles Harold (1914) George (1916)
Flo also had at least 8 Danby cousins! As you can tell, I've done quite a bit of work on the Danbys, so even if you aren't related to Flo, you may be interested in your Danby ancestors. Please get in touch if you remember Flo. My phone number is 400691. Heather Flack

Community News Bewdley library is offering three IT workshops this Autumn – Internet Search, Using Emails, and Digital Image. These will give expert support in these areas without the commitment of time and expense attached to a full-length course. They will be on Thursday mornings in September/October and cost £15 for three hours. Places are limited so make sure you put your name down if you're interested.
We will also be offering an introductory course in Creative Writing, beginning on Thursday 22nd September, which will run for 10 weeks. There will be the opportunity to follow on from this in the Spring with an Editing and Adaptation module if you feel like taking it further. So if you've got an itchy pen (or keyboard!) pop in and find out more. As above, places will be limited so don't hang about. Time to give that book inside you the chance to break free!

Gardening for August
For most people August is holiday time, gardens are left to fend for themselves or perhaps the neighbours will drop by and do a bit of watering. By this time of year the main work is done, the first flush of summer is past and Autumn is yet to arrive, so you could just sit back and relax, harvest some of the crops, dig potatoes, watch the lawn grow or take advantage of slack time to get ahead. Seeds can be collected into brown paper bags and stored for next year in a cool dry place; deadhead plants that still flower to encourage more. Cuttings can be taken from many shrubs and started off in pots with a little rooting powder. Borders can be tidied and where there is a lack of colour a few remaining bedding plants popped into the gaps or alternatively early autumnal varieties. Lawns can still be fed, leaving the cuttings on top will help to retain some moisture in the ground, another month to go before scarification; don’t cut the grass too short as this will encourage more growth. Keep baskets, tubs and pots in good order with a little foliar feed in their water.
Compost bins will still be working, so make sure their contents are regularily turned and that there is sufficient water to accelerate the process of rotting down. And finally, when all is done you can consult next year’s bulb catalogues and plan for the spring displays.
Bewdley youth café needs your support
The Youth Café needs the support from local residents, parents and young people to come together and take part in a sponsored walk to raise funds for the youth café. The youth café is a local charity and relies solely on grants and fund raising. The sponsored walk will take place at the Wyre Forest Discovery Centre at Callow Hill and will be around three & half miles (the red route) and will be supported by the local Bewdley & Rural Local Policing Team.
The date of the walk is yet to be confirmed and will be advertised on the youth café’s notice board and throughout the town within the next few weeks.
The BYC has over 500 young people registered and opens every weekday morning, where we provide free breakfast and again every day after school and throughout the school term holidays where we offer advice and guidance along with free access to the youth café’s facilities for young people aged between 8-16 years.
If you would like to volunteer or join in the sponsored walk and help raise funds for the youth cafe then, please contact Sarah Watton on: 01299 405945 - 07546079058
email-sarah.watton.byc@hotmail.co.uk
Or you can collect a sponsorship form from Bewdley Youth Café 54 Load Street Bewdley.

Tails of a Veterinary Practice – life at Riverside Vets as seen by Gavin the practice cat
Hi all,
I hope this month finds you well and that, like me, you have been able to find some occasional patches of sun in which to have a nice snooze.
It has been another exciting month at the surgery. Jayne (my human who is a Veterinary Nursing Auxiliary) has been telling me about heading off to France for the world 2CV rally. Apparently a 2CV (also known as a deux chevaux) is one of those noisy things that travel on 4 wheels that humans call a car. Jayne says it is a classic and the best of all the cars. Personally, I think all cars are best avoided by self respecting felines whenever possible. I have also been spending some time observing the goings on on the river. There have been a gaggle of geese looking very proud swimming about with a little gosling. They seem to form a protective circle around it when they swim. My humans have all been heard cooing and saying how cute it is. I think I am much better looking though and they should cuddle me instead. More from me again next month,
Gavin

Bewdley/Wribbenhall Ladies’ Luncheon Club
The June meeting was considered to be one of our best ever, when we had Mr M Jones speaking on “Bees, Bee Keeping and Honey”. He brought many visual aids and took us through the processes in a most informative way. On 24th August local lady Janet Ince will speak to us on “Floral Dolly Mixtures”. All ladies are welcome to attend our monthly meetings at the Ramada Hotel, and further details can be obtained by phoning 400363.
Guide Dogs for the Blind
Thanks to the people of Bewdley who supported us at two recent events in the town. We had a flag day on 4th June, raising £280.02 ; we also had a stall at Bewdley carnival on 11th June, and we were happy to see all the people who stopped by to talk to us and meet a guide dog and then donated or purchased items from our stall. VIEW FROM THE REDTHORNE
The clearing of one of Bewdley’s ancient strip gardens adjacent to The Redthorne has cost a number of trees their lives. I won’t go into that now, as it’s a matter I’ve written about elsewhere, but it has exposed a structure I had not previously noticed – the chimney of the old foundry. A fascinating addition to the museum, the foundry is a symbol of a Bewdley long-gone and the chimney hints at a past that was not always quite as rosy as some might paint it. Up until the 1960s, this unusual skyward finger of brick and iron strapping belched black smoke for much of the day and it continued to do so, in a more restricted sense and with a few breaks, until the 1990s. Some fifty feet away from it, where the main thoroughfare of the museum now runs, was the shambles – butcheries built when wealth and decorum moved Bewdley’s slaughtering industry off Load Street. There, thousands of cattle, pigs and sheep ended their days; the gutters channelling gallons of blood and guts towards the river.
On the far side of the gardens, with its frontage onto the river and its waste flowing into it, was the tannery, a place where hides from the butcheries were soaked in lime, urine and bird faeces to make them fat-free and supple. And upstream, on Dog Lane, was a huge bottle kiln, firing pottery. Just outside the town on Dowles Brook, was a sulphuric acid works and on the Wribbenhall side of the bridge, a chocolate factory and, of course, several of the pubs brewed their own ale, including the Mug House.
There, and at the numerous other taverns in the town, would stay dozens of bowhauliers and workmen, who earned their living hauling the 40 plus trows based at Bewdley against the fast flow of the Severn. There, too, drank the hundreds of impoverished children, adults and elderly who worked in the saddlers, shoe-makers, horn-workers, pewterers, farriers, charcoal-burners and warehouses. Then, having drunk their fill and more, they crammed each night into Bewdley’s crumbling hovels, such as those now prettily-converted cottage in the alleys off the High Street. Heavens! Bewdley must have STUNK!

At the end of June some changes in the structure of Local Policing across North Worcestershire took effect. The number of police officers on local policing teams dedicated to policing specific areas such as Bewdley and its surrounding rural parishes has been reduced significantly. As a direct consequence of these reductions, the post of Local Policing Sergeant at Bewdley has ceased to exist.
The revised structure of Bewdley & Rural Local Policing Team now consists of PC Steve Yapp, who will be your principal point of contact, ably assisted by CSO’s Jeni Bray and Nicky Turvey and a small but dedicated band of Specials. They will be supervised by Sgt. Jan Shore, who takes on responsibility for Bewdley in addition to her diminished compliment of officers at Stourport.
Most of the officers leaving Local Policing have transferred onto five response teams providing 24/7 cover from Kidderminster. One of those teams is on duty at any given time, except for Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights when shift overlaps mean that two are on duty. Those overlaps should provide sufficient resilience for officers to patrol Bewdley town centre on Friday and Saturday evenings, when alcohol and drug induced antisocial behaviour is most prevalent. One officer from each team will have specific responsibility for investigating crimes in Bewdley, and should, when opportunity permits, work out of Bewdley police station. The reality, however, is that resources are directed to where demand is greatest, and operational flexibility is required rather than a focus on specific
areas. The demand on police resources is twelve times greater in Kidderminster than it is in Bewdley, and in Stourport it is two and a half to three times greater. Like blades of grass, we must bend in the direction of the prevailing wind.
The impact of these changes will affect some parts of the community more than others. If you are the victim of crime, or involved in an accident or need urgent police assistance, then nothing has changed. However, our capacity to support community organisations and events, deal with social issues, carry out preventative work to reduce crime, and perform the many other functions associated with community policing has been severely affected. Our small team has enjoyed a certain level of success, with overall crime levels in Bewdley falling for two successive years, and in the quarter ending June reducing by 28% compared to the same period last year. Over that same period, crime in Kidderminster has increased by 10.9%. It would be reassuring if we were able to believe that the increase could be addressed without detriment to Bewdley.
My five years spent at Bewdley have been some of the most enjoyable of my service. I sincerely thank the many people in the town and parishes who have worked with us to our mutual gain. I will still be contactable for some time yet to support and assist however I can. As the functions performed by many public services as well as the police enter a period of contraction and uncertainty, I wish you all good luck and best wishes for the future. Police Sergeant Chris Aimes Kidderminster East Local Policing Team

A Cuckoo Surprise!
Don’t be surprised if you hear the call of the cuckoo in Bewdley Museum this August. You do not have to worry – The Friends of Bewdley Museum have not kept one captive – but the exhibition in the Wyre Forest Gallery owes its inspiration to the mysterious bird. Did you know that it was in a quiet corner of Worcestershire called Pound Green Common that a sometime Midlands Industrialist finally lay proof to one of the longest running mysteries surrounding the unique lifestyle of one of the most recognised but
rarely seen birds of the world?
What do cuckoos, the White House, the Great Exhibition and Lighthouses have in common? How do they connect with Pound Green Common? On Friday 12th August the “Cuckoo Chance – The Secret Life of the Cuckoo” exhibition will be opened by BBC Bristol’s naturalist Brett Westwood. This is a Private View, before it opens to the Public from Saturday 12th August to 25th September, which is for members of the Friends of Bewdley Museum. The sound of the cuckoo will be heard as the Friends re-establish local folklore. It was said that when the cuckoo is first heard ”men must down tools and retire to a local hostelry to drink ale!” Bewdley Brewery is supplying bottles of “Cuckoo Ale” and The Friends will toast the opening with local beer and apple juice. To make sure you do not miss out why not join The Friends of Bewdley Museum and perhaps help with the planning of one of the exhibitions. Recent topics have been Tickenhill Palace, the pubs of Bewdley, the Arley Ferry and now Cuckoos!
There will also be the results of the local survey of cuckoo calls that many of you helped with. So please make sure that you do pop in, perhaps whilst on your way to the Sunday afternoon Music in the Gardens, which run from Sunday July 31st to Sunday August 28th 2-4pm. There is a lot to do, see and hear in the museum this August.

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 4th JULY 2011
20mph Speed Limits At its April meeting the Town Council had resolved to lobby the County Council for the introduction of a 20 mph speed limit in Bewdley town centre plus across the bridge into Wribbenhall to include Stourport Road outside the schools. However, there was some doubt as to whether that would be supported by the Police or by the Highway Authority. Reference was made to the fact such lower limits were in operation in both Worcestershire and further afield. Councillors decided to invite the Chairman of the Police Authority to meet with them to make representations direct to her as to the desirability of such a scheme going ahead.
Policing in Bewdley Councillors again considered the changes that were in the process of being made to the levels of policing in Bewdley/Wribbenhall by uniformed patrols. This had arisen from the redeployment of the highly respected Sergeant Chris Aimes to Kidderminster with no direct replacement being allocated specifically to Bewdley. There was strong feeling that for a town of our size a greater presence was required than the remaining Police Constable and Community Support Officers could provide and that relying more on response vehicles from Kidderminster was inadequate. Councillors agreed to take up on offer to meet with Police chiefs to express their overall concerns.
Bewdley Development Trust The Development Trust had been promised a grant from Advantage West Midlands of £805,000 towards the costs of refurbishment of St George‘s Hall, which everyone agreed was in a poor condition and needed renovation with more modern facilities. However there was a funding gap of £10,000 primarily to pay for professional fees in setting up a new charitable company, which would then take a lease and run the Hall in the future for the community. Without that funding there was a risk that the £805,000 would be lost and the project not proceed with it being many years before any alternative funding might be available. Though there were strong arguments for and against making the grant, the Council agreed that such should be made to ensure the work could go ahead. Future Town Council meetings Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall on Mondays at 7.30pm are: 1st August, 5th September, 10th October, 7th November and 5th December. Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. They are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk TOWN COUNCIL NEWS IS PRODUCED AND PUBLISHED BY BEWDLEY TOWN COUNCIL

August in the forest There is a story about Bewdley that deserves to be more widely known: Victorian artist, art critic, and social commentator John Ruskin had planned to bring his collection of paintings, artefacts, books and minerals to Bewdley and had gone so far as to commission plans for a building in Ruskinland, the parcel of forest given to him by Mayor of Bewdley, George Baker. Although this never materialised, the social experiment of a small community of Ruskin-inspired families, working the land and nurturing craftsmanship and the appreciation of natural beauty, became part of our heritage, and Ruskin’s “Guild of St. George” still owns 100 acres of forest and its smallholdings. Bewdley Museum has joined with Sheffield Museum to exhibit a part of the John Ruskin collection until 7th August, and I can recommend it!
The exhibition which follows at the Museum also expresses the link between local people and nature. Edgar Chance was a pioneer of ornithology and wildlife film making whose study of cuckoos at Pound Green solved the mysteries of the bird’s life cycle. His, and their, story is told at the Museum from 13th August to 25th September. Back in the forest, there are all sorts of events for 5 to 11 year olds and families in the big outdoors:
August 2nd Pond Dip with related games and activities.
August 5th Shadow Puppet Workshop 10am to 12noon OR 1pm to 3pm. £5 per child, OR all day £10 per child (subsidised by Grow With Wyre), booking essential.

August 16th Forest Playtime for Under 5s. Join us for woodland games suitable for the very young. 10am to 11.30am August 19th Mud Monsters! Create a muddy monster to live in Mud Monster Valley.
August 23rd Family Bushcraft evening. Learn how to make a fire and cook your meat and vegetarian sausages plus all other food provided. Children aged 8+, £4 per person. 5.30pm to 7.30pm. Booking essential.
August 26th Teddy Bear Trail. Bring your teddy for an adventure! Turn up any time between 10.30 and12. £3 per child. No booking required.
August 30th Woodland Warriors. A woodland adventure with camouflage and bows and arrows!
September 2nd Family Dusk Walk. All children must be 7+ and accompanied by an adult. Wear warm clothes and bring a torch. 7pm to 9pm.

Bewdley Floral Art Clubs Three Day Event at the Rose Theatre, Kidderminster June 2011 Kaleidoscope
Our 19th year at the Rose Theatre, Kidderminster, saw yet again another spectacular show of floral skills and artistry from Andrew Lloyd and Joan Southerton. Supported by the clubs committee and members they once again entertained the audiences at the Rose for three evenings. Andrew & Joan created fantastic displays on stage, which were greeted with much approval.
One of the highlights was undoubtedly the superb Irish dancing by Megan Ince, who supported Andrew’s Emerald Isle display.
We were delighted to give each of our chosen charities £500 each. They were The Midlands Air Ambulance, The Severn Freewheelers, Home Start, The Wyre Forest Talking Newspaper and the Bewdley Youth Café. Yes, £2,500, a great total for us to achieve. Thanks to everyone who supported us and we look forward to next year and our 20th production! Judith Richards
Delivering The Bridge : A few housekeeping matters
If you sometimes don’t get your Bridge copy, do please forgive us. The wonderful volunteers who collect the magazines and put them through your letterbox do go on holiday occasionally, or get ill or have other reasons for missing some months. If you don’t get the magazine for several months, do contact the Manns (manns@talktalk.net or leave a note for them in St Anne’s) who will try to sort it out, or better still, persuade you to take on a few deliveries! As St Anne’s is open most weekdays you can always go in and pick up a copy. If you would like to take more, please let us know; once or twice we have run quite badly short and before we take the expensive step of increasing the print run we need to know that the extra copies are going to be used regularly.

Kemp Hospice Midnight Walk
We did it! Bewdley Girlguiding members, Gill Robinson and Carol-Ann Muller-Jones completed the five mile walk in the forest in just an hour and a half. They set off with hundreds of other mad women on the countdown to midnight. The only inconvenience was avoiding the odd muddy patch on the forest. Gill more than deserved her glass of Bucks Fizz! It was a magical experience. Following the trail of flashing bunny ears, as it wove through the forest path ahead was like tracking fairies. The atmosphere was exciting and moving at the same time, as it was clear many were walking in memory of friends and loved ones. The organisation was brilliant, especially the employment of Captain Jack Sparrow to cheer the walkers on! Thanks to everyone who sponsored the event and prepare to be pestered again next year, as they have already booked their places.
Bewdley Historic Street Market Returns
Great news – our historic street market is coming back – and in the centre of the town in Load Street.
It will be held on the 1st Sunday of every month and starts on the 7th of August. It is being organized by Bewdley Development Trust and will feature stalls with both quality locally grown produce as well as craft and related stalls.
“The people of Bewdley have being asking for the return of their market and we have been able to agree it with the appropriate authorities”, said Peter Miller of the Trust. “So come on everyone, let us make our market a success by supporting our local traders.”
Plans are in hand to promote the new market by having large signs in and around the town, as well as promoting the market, both locally and further afield. Watch out for more details in the Bridge.
Anyone interested in renting a stall can contact Bewdley Development Trust on 01299 405516

The Bewdley Showcase Event
Sixth form Learner supporting St Anne’s Church fair trade stall
The Bewdley Showcase event was held in conjunction with the Bewdley Open Studio on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th June 2011. This year, the school arranged for a craft fayre and cafe to run on the Saturday with stalls offering a variety of fair-trade goods, jewellery, books, cakes, paintings and cards and other enterprise activities. Over 40 learners exhibited their work from across the range of GCSE and A Level disciplines. Clare Spencer and Betty Judd exhibited their work in the new gallery space.
‘Artwork terrific, lovely young people showed us around and answered all our questions. Great school!’ A comment from one visitor to the exhibition.

Our fleet insurance accepts you as a driver with a good UK driving licence, aged between 21 – 70, and willing and able to help. Come and find me in our office in St Anne’s Church tower or call me on 01299 405832 for a test drive.

Chance to Shine Tournament
Bewdley Cricket Club has been part of the Chance to Shine Cricket Initiative assisted by the Worcestershire Cricket Board. It is in its second year of a five year delivery plan. Chance to Shine aims to bring cricket back into state schools. This year Andy Wheeler, the appointed coach, together with members of the Bewdley Cricket Club delivered 280 hours of cricket coaching free of charge to the Bewdley and Wolverley School Pyramids.
The year culminated with two tournaments held at Bewdley in July. It was pleasing to see six schools entering teams at two age levels. The winners of the Year 5/6 tournament were Cookley Sebright Primary School while Far Forest Lea Memorial Cof E Primary School led the way in the Year 3/4 tournament. Pictured are the winners of the primary school tournaments with their trophies.
