The BRIDGE October 2011
Community News
Save Bewdley Farm Shop!!! The Bridge is certainly not a political magazine but there is obvious uproar against the demand that our farm shop removes its high quality local produce from the pavement.
"Political madness", "start a petition", "form a human barricade around the shop", "look at changing the road layout" are just some of the comments said to the editor and production team. So what is the answer? Either do nothing and loose a part of Bewdley's history. Or do something like talking to your local councillor, calling into the shop and asking Tony if you can help, let the Bridge know your views, start a petition - it’s up you you!
Sponsored Zumbathon
On Saturday 3rd September, 56 participants from across the Wyre Forest joined three instructors, Faith, Lindsay and Toni for a 2-hour Zumba Marathon at Bewdley Cricket Club. They were raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support and to date have secured ÂŁ507. A lot of fun was had by all in the process and a big thank you to everyone for their support!
Editorial News
The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley
It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month
Do any of our more senior Bridge readers remember collecting bus ticket numbers? Or spending hours carefully smoothing out the cellophane wrappers round Quality Street chocolates and peering through them at the sky? Perhaps you still hoard old envelopes that are almost certainly going to come in handy one day. Do you roll up pieces of string because they’re just too good to throw away? I do hope so. Otherwise I’m going to seriously regret confessing to these bizarre habits.
I thought about our more random behaviours yesterday when I stopped to talk to a group of girls giggling over their mobiles. “What’s the joke?” I asked. “We’re planking”, they said. “Ah”, I replied wisely. “So what you do …”, Emma began to explain. “Well, do you want to do it?” the boldest asked. So I obediently lay face down on the pavement with Emma while the others took a photo. Yes, that was it. Well, come on; what’s so sensible about storing pieces of string, or colour-coding your underwear drawer? I think I spend much too much time being sensible and am resolved to be less gravely serious in the future. Who knows what that might do to the Bridge?
In the meantime, a fairly sensible October edition has the first article from our new Youth Correspondent Chris Salter, Festival information, a report from the Horticultural Show and lots of splendid photos and articles. We even have news of a reader from across the Atlantic!

This month’s House Fellowship will be led by the Rev. Linda Catlow from Stourport. The all age worship service for October will be on the 16th at 10.30 a.m. The Knit and Natter Group had a lovely afternoon at Great Witley Church and tearooms. We have now started making the hats and scarves for the shoe box appeal. If you feel you would like to help with the knitting and would like to pop along to join us, we meet on the 2nd Thursday of the month from 2.00 to 4.00 p.m.
We all helped Mary Trueman celebrate her 90th birthday on the 11th September by having a birthday lunch after the morning service.

Well, it should be getting wetter, hurray, and colder, boo, this month, so we move on to enjoy the last colours of the year and start preparing the ground for next year. Herbaceous plants can be moved, perennial can be divided and replanted using the more vigorous outer margins. After dahlias have been nibbled by the first frosts, it’s time to gently lift them for overwinter storage. Chrysanthemums on the other hand can be left in the ground or move to a ventilated cold frame and keep an eye open for mildew. For the following, bearded irises leave in the ground but clean away dead material and reduce longer growth by a quarter; gladioli - lift and trim stem to a half an inch and store dry. Sweet peas can be sown now in open ground or in a cold frame; check regularly for signs of fungal growth. Bulb planting should be completed. This is a month where the gardener needs to be working and thinking. Apart from the routine jobs of cleaning and preparing beds, tending the borders and removing or replanting stock, thought must be given to next season, what and where are good starting points.
Finally a word or two about our annual show, one of the best yet, despite a very difficult growing year. The numbers of entries were slightly down in some classes but the quality of entries was superb. A pleasing feature was to see you contestants this year doing very well in the show and winning prestigious medals. Visitor numbers were well up due to a fine day and improved pre show publicity and one of the highlights of the day was the auction of produce. Word must be getting around that show standard flowers, fruit, vegetable and domestic products can be purchased for a song. We look forward to seeing you next year.
The Green Corner Grow local, Eat local
Are you growing your own food? Do you have occasional surpluses that you'd like to sell but don't have an outlet? Many small-scale growers - people with allotments or land shares for example - will know the frustration of seasonal gluts. Mine is always courgettes. No matter how much I plan to grow only what I need, there's always the moment when I'm overflowing with them. Giving them to friends is one solution but even they can have too much of a good thing. What is needed is an outlet that will accept random overflows of produce.
Transition Bewdley is offering local growers the opportunity to sell through our stall at Bewdley's Local Produce Market, which is being held on the first Sunday of every month. You need to register in advance that you have produce to sell. You should give details of the produce - where it has been grown, the name of the variety and anything else of interest. A contribution to the cost of the stall and insurance cover for the day will be required - the amount will depend on how many people use the stall but will be no more than ÂŁ15 and could be as little as ÂŁ5.
Please contact me, Janice Bell on j_c_bell@talk21.com to express interest or find out more.

20’s Plenty Where People Live
You may have noticed while walking or driving down High Street that there are windows and dustbins displaying the logos of the above organization. This is a campaign supported by many residents and importantly, our Town Council to get speed limits in some residential areas reduced to 20 miles and hour. There are a lot of benefits to High Street in reducing speeds to this level; the most notable being that if you are hit as you step out of the front door, by a vehicle driving on the narrow pavement, you may not survive the impact. This may sound like an exaggeration but the reality here is that this may well happen as speeds and volumes of traffic continue to increase. High Street has been subject to a recent survey of speed averages made by the County Council despite bland arguments being made that speeding in High Street is a problem of perception. We await a disclosure of results but would say that if there is a perception that speeding occurs, then it is highly likely that speeds are actually too high for the area. To have a better overview of this campaign, please have a look at the website, which can be found at www.20splentyforus.org.uk. And if possible give it your support to ensure a safer environment for Bewdley.
The Green, Green Grass of Home
I won’t lie to you, after four years away at university the thought of moving back into the family home in Bewdley horrified me. ‘I’ll be bored within a week’ I thought to myself, my head pressed against the car window (partly due to my utter despondency, partly due to the box of pots and pans pressing into my side). The sea passed out of view and the clouds darkened to match my mood; my last day as a student disappearing not with the excess and lasciviousness associated with the world I was leaving, but fading with the layering melancholy I imagined the real world held in store for me. As the hours dripped by and Welsh mountains faded into rolling English hills, memories of Bewdley began to filter through the rainclouds of my mind. As jagged peaks gave way to gentle hills, my bad mood improved and slowly but steadily I began to look forward to my homecoming.
Finally, coming over the final hill I found my heart beating out a happier rhythm. The gentle patchwork hills I see from the top of Tudor Road that always, as a child, told me home was just around the corner were doing their job once more.
I’ve often heard people say that Bewdley is a town trapped in the past. I don’t believe this is true. Bewdley is a town that embraces the future; we just don’t forget our past. Bewdley to me isn’t a throwback to the past; we just feel that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The world seems to be always in a rush to reach the future; our little town is taking a leisurely stroll and letting everyone else sort out the kinks before we arrive. Benjamin Ife.

The Friends of Bewdley Museum celebrate 40 years in 2012
When the Exley family finally closed the doors on their brass foundry in 1968, I wonder if they ever dreamt that members of the public, both young and old, would be gazing in fascination at their computer-less office?
This, together with the many other exhibits and workshops, has been made possible by the vision, enthusiasm and commitment of local people who worked to retain an important part of the town’s Heritage. By 1972 Bewdley Museum was opened, and the ‘Friends of Bewdley Museum’ officially inaugurated, so we will be 40 in 2012.
The ‘Friends’ have worked closely with the Museum since those early days, providing volunteers to add to the visitor experience There are opportunities for those who would like to learn more about collection conservation, those who enjoy research, and those who fancy a spot of gardening.
Why not join the ‘Friends’, and be part of an exciting anniversary year? You will meet lots So drop in and as Mrs D would say, have a try. of interesting people, make new friends, and help to keep a much loved and admired Ah, go on. Museum active and enjoyable for our visitors. Go on, go on, go on, go on…. Perhaps you have memories of the museum forty years ago. We would love to hear Kay Sanderson them.
The deadline for the November issue is the 10th October

Not rooting for looting?
So, it appears that the recent riot breakout across the UK has given newspapers, TV channels and online websites yet another opportunity to slate young people, branding us “thugs” and “petty criminals”, but before we start believing these dismissive and notably degrading titles, let’s have a look at the statistics, shall we?
According to the Daily Mail, 52.1% of the looting and associated crimes were all carried out by people aged 19 to 25, a somewhat higher figure than the 21% of crimes carried out by people under the age of 18. So if that’s the case, why is it that secondary school students seem to be the ones taking all the blame, and is it really fair that we, as a generation of people, are having to live with the reputation that we’re all criminals? The evidence of our “thuggish” reputation is everywhere; the scared old foke that avoid you in the street, the rolling eyes of shopkeepers assuming you’re doing something wrong.
So, if people are going to assume all young people do with their time is steal and commit crimes, then how do they think we are getting such good exam results? Looting Waterstones won’t get you a GCSE in English, as looting HMV won’t get you a GCSE in Music. What will? Hard work, and it’s this hard work that is going unnoticed. So my message, and hopefully your message for newspapers, TV Channels and wrongly opinionated people, is this: Look at the facts, look at what we achieve and maybe then judge. Despite the opinion of many, we are not all rooting for looting. Chris D Salter

Top award for new Bewdley building
A former dilapidated farm building at Uncllys Farm, Bewdley, that has been converted into a multi purpose studio has won the award for the best sustainable building project in the West of England.
The new two storey studio is built from 100 year old oak sourced a few yards from the building in the Guild of St George's woodlands in the surrounding Wyre Forest. The new studio is used for a wide range of training in rural crafts, educational visits and volunteer related activities.
The building has been named as the Ruskin Studio, in honour of John Ruskin, the English art and social critic who established the Guild of St George charitable trust that owns three farms in Bewdley, including Uncllys.
The project involved a partnership between a number of local organizations including John and Linda Iles who manage the farm, Dr. Cedric Quayle from the Guild of St George, Robert Taylor consultant architect, Ron Clowes builder and Paul Wright, Building Control Officer for Wyre Forest District Council.
Paul Wright said “We decided to enter this project to the Local Authority Building Control awards for the way that it uses local quality resources harvested within yards of the building and how it has harnessed local skills, knowledge and craftsmanship. It is also a tribute to the work of John Ruskin who in the 1880’s visited Bewdley and planned to create a farming utopia and build a museum.”
John Iles who runs Uncllys Farm added, “Everyone who comes along to the studio is impressed by its fine oak beam construction, it superb views over the Wyre Forest and what an asset it is to the local community. It also uses new technology for water heating and power generation to make it truly sustainable.”
The Ruskin Studio was one of over 25,000 eligible projects for the award in the West of England. The project has now been forwarded to the national event, the winner of which will be announced in November 2011.

New apprenticeships in the Wyre Forest
A number of local and national organisations have teamed together to provide new apprenticeship training for three young people to work in the Wyre Forest. Over £130,000 is being provided to train the apprentices over a three year period. As well as learning the full range of practical skills required to manage forests, the apprentices are also undertaking a range of training, including business studies modules.
Local organsations funding the scheme include The Guild of St George, Natural England and the Forestry Commission. The scheme, which is part of Recreating the Forest Landscape being undertaken by the Grow With Wyre project, has also attracted match funding from by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Natural Assets. The three current young people going through the scheme include Andy Jones, Rob Moore and Fahra Collins.
Cedric Quayle of the Guild of St George said “We decided to support this exciting scheme as we own a significant area of historic woodland in the Wyre Forest, which will benefit by having people with the skills needed in the management of these areas and restoring them to their former glory.”
Peter Thaxter from the Grow With Wyre Partnership added, “This scheme plays a key role in our recreating the forest landscape project where we are delivering improvements to the rich and diverse Wyre. In total 72 square kilometers of unique landscape is being restored, costing around £4 million and benefiting the 1.8 million people who visit the area. Providing people with the skills to undertake this type of work is clearly an essential requirement.”
Photographed from left to right, Peter Thaxter from the Forestry Commission receiving the cheque from Cedric Quayle, Guild of St George, with Andy Jones, one of the three apprentices who are supported by the scheme.

When the big upheavals come in life, it’s good to know that there is someone to turn to for advice and direction. The crunch point is not always huge and it’s not always bad, but we Christians believe that our Father God wants to be involved with every aspect of our lives and involve us in the building of His Kingdom. This is the theme of Bewdley Baptist Church’s Women’s Day on Saturday November 19th “Moving forward: finding God’s pathway for your life”
During the day, which starts at 9.30am and finishes at 4.30pm, there will be interactive sessions led by Rosalyn Derges of Inspired Women’s Ministries, exploring prayer and other ways of hearing from God. There will also be worship, time to chat and sharing of Communion. Refreshments are provided but delegates are asked to bring their own picnic lunch. There is no charge for the day but there will be opportunity to make a donation to cover costs.
If you are interested please contact Mary Farmer at the church on 01299 403267, leaving a message if necessary. Bookings should be made before November 13th. We hope to see you there!

My pen pal of 63 years, June Gittens, who lives at Forest Close, Wyre Hill, Bewdley, sends along news of your town. Having read your, "talk, talk, talk, talk" article, I thought I'd send greetings from Centralia, Washington, on the West Coast of the U.S. Our climate is almost the same as yours, with this year the temperature never exceeding 90F and mostly in the 70's. We don't have 100's of years of town history, but Centralia has a great community spirit, too, with a good local newspaper. We are also upset about your riots. Sad to see no pride of country, among the young. It has been wonderful to have June, Melvyn and her family be part of our family. Glenice and Donald Sunde - we live half way from Seattle to Portland, on interstate 5.
St Anne’s has a women-only walking group.
The Walky-talkies’ October walk dates are: Saturday1st October Friday 14th October More information from Joyce Redstall on 01299 404179

St Anne’s Church Centre
Thank you to all the kind people who responded to my advert to bake cakes to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. I have just banked £300, which is the money raised by my appeal and the cakes sold in St Anne’s coffee shop to visitors and regulars of the church. The church is open Tuesday to Sunday with an ever-warm welcome from our kindly volunteers who give of their free time to keep the church & coffee bar open. I am now standing down after a decade of running the volunteer group, but new volunteers are still needed, so please phone to enquire what it entails. Actually a ready smile, a liking for people and the ability to make a cuppa sums it up! Our latest recruit Ray (who is doing a super job) won’t mind me telling you he’s 82 and we have two other octogenarians in the team. As Ray said “I just want to give something back to the great community that is Bewdley”. So think about it! I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to all the volunteers who have put up with my endless phone calls and the help given me along the way – you are wonderful people doing a wonderful job. Love Cate

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS
Community News
TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 5th SEPTEMBER 2011
Habberley Road 40 & 50 mph speed limits
Councillors agreed to proposals by the County Council to extend the present 40 mph limit by some 320 metres and to create a new 50mph for the remainder of the road up the hill through to its junction with Canterbury Road in Kidderminster. Stourport Road – Waiting Restrictions
Councillors also agreed to new double yellow lines being introduced on a small section of Stourport Road near the pinch-point closest to Bewdley Primary School. At present with cars parked there, two-way traffic can be made very difficult and leads to yet further congestion. Town Centre Flowers
The Council has received many favourable comments about the improvement in flower displays this summer in the new tiered tubs and the replacement hanging baskets along Load Street. It was agreed therefore that we should now fill those tubs with some interesting winter plants to make the street more inviting. The Council accepted a quote from a local supplier to provide and then maintain them throughout the season. Wribbenhall Millennium Green
The Town Council is responsible for this Green and the Mayor was pleased to announce that two new bench seats have been erected and which replace some vandalised a while ago. It is hoped they will be well used by local people. October Council Meeting Date
Please note this will now take place on Monday 3rd October not the 10th as previously indicated. Future Town Council meetings
Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall on Mondays at 7.30pm are:
3rd October, 7th November and 5th December, 3rd January (Tuesday) and 6th February.
Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. They are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk

On The Beat
Since I started as the Local Policing Officer in Bewdley, I have tried hard to meet the specific needs of the residential and rural community. I have learned a great deal from Sergeant Chris Aimes and following his recent departure to a new post in Kidderminster, I have been doing my best to ensure residents do not see a fall in service. West Mercia Police have been looking closely at how we organise and structure ourselves, and have had to make some difficult decisions. It is unfortunate that as part of the restructuring across North Worcestershire Sergeant Aimes’s experience and local knowledge has been lost to the community here.
However Sergeant Jan Shore is also a highly experienced Local Policing Sergeant. She has had responsibility for Stourport for many years and will now apply that experience to both Stourport and Bewdley. I remain in post as Bewdley Local Policing Officer with support from CSO Nicholla Turvey and CSO Jeni Bray. Response teams will also have a duty to allocate officers to work in Bewdley whenever required.
I hope this will reassure people that the changes to our structure in North Worcestershire will not result in a reduction in the policing of the area. In Bewdley I shall prioritise, on a day-to-day basis, how best to respond to the community and its needs.
Naturally there will be changes in how we continue to deliver a comprehensive and effective service, but our focus remains dedicated to Bewdley and Rural communities.
Regards Pc2122 Steve Yapp

October In The Forest
Community News
On Wednesday October 5th there is a course on Nature Photography for Beginners from 10am to 4pm at the Community Discovery Centre. This is exactly what it says and warm waterproof clothes will be needed for outdoor work. £20 per person (adults and interested children over 11 years old), subsidised by Grow With Wyre. Please book.
Wood ants are a familiar sight in the Wyre Forest. Their size (about 1cm long) never fails to impress (cries of “Cor, look at those giant ants!”) and a very active nest on a sunny day can be quite intimidating! They only live in ancient woodland where they feed on an assortment of invertebrates and climb trees in search of aphids, which they ‘milk’ for sugary honeydew. They build nests by gathering fragments of vegetation such as larch needles to make a heap up to 1m high. In the nest are tunnels, which extend underground and provide space for several queens to lay their eggs. Their natural history is fascinating and well-researched, but how well are they doing now? How many nests are there and where? If you would like to help to find the answers, please pick up an information leaflet and survey form from the foyer of the Visitor Centre and complete it with your observations by 30th October.
Fungus Forays are always very popular, and this year there are 4 two-hour sessions, which cost £6.50 per person: Saturday 1st October: 10.30am – 12.30pm at Earnwood car park, 2pm – 4pm at Hawkbatch car park; Sunday 30th October: 10.30am – 12.30pm at Hawkbatch car park, 2pm – 4pm at Earnwood car park. Booking is required. The half-term holiday has 2 events for children aged 5 to 11: On Tuesday 25th October “Lanterns and Besoms”. “Bats” on Friday 28th October is a morning of bat-inspired games, masks and other crafts.
Each event takes place at the Community Discovery Centre from 10.30am to 12noon, costs £3.50 per child and must be booked on 01299 266929.
