LETTER FROM THE BIGNY PRESIDENT WELCOME TO THE 30TH NEW YORK BOOK SHOW! On behalf of the Board and Executive Committee of the Book Industry Guild of New York, I am so very pleased you have come to join us at the highest point in our seasonal calendar. Inside these pages, and here at the Battery Gardens, we are honored to share with you the best in the art of bookmaking from our remarkable publishing industry. We are proud, through our New York Book Show, to show you the continuing vitality of book publishing as embodied in six genres of publishing: General Trade, Special Trade, Children’s Trade, School, Professional/Reference, and our new category, Self-Published Covers. The works displayed here reflect the creativity and talent of individuals throughout our industry. In keeping with the Guild’s ongoing commitment to enhance literacy, all the books submitted for this Show will be donated to organizations who are dedicated to promoting literacy. The Book Industry Guild of New York is a member-operated, professional, wholly volunteer organization comprised of professionals from every aspect of the book publishing and book manufacturing industries. It is this group of volunteers that make the 30th Annual Book Show possible. Very special thanks go to Christine Davis and Sara Maher, the co-chairs of this year’s event. Their yearlong effort of tireless leadership, guidance, and coordination of the Book Show Committee for all of the many tasks needed results in this spectacular evening! Also, thanks must go to the many volunteers and donors who are listed throughout this catalog for their time, monetary, and/or service donations. Through the dedication of all the volunteers, we can admire this outstanding collection of beautiful books the judges have selected as the best books of 2015. A special note of thanks goes out to Penguin Random House, Simon & Schuster, Neenah, and C&C Offset. They have been our partners in providing space and financial assistance to enable us to present this Show. We are very grateful for their steadfast involvement. Lastly, but not least, as president of the Guild, I would like to thank you for attending this event. As an organization, our greatest assets are our members, both corporate and individual. The New York Book Show contributes to covering basic expenses for our monthly evening programs, literacy efforts, plant trips, and educational seminars. Thank you for your ongoing interest and please enjoy this evening! We are delighted to share this Book Show with you as a celebration of our collective accomplishments. Come join us at any or all of our wonderful events throughout the year that enhance and expand our incredible publishing industry. Everyone is always welcome! Sincerely, Jody Saunders Ray President The Book Industry Guild of New York

ABOUT BIGNY THE BOOK INDUSTRY GUILD OF NEW YORK (BIGNY) is an organization comprised of book publishing and manufacturing professionals. The name was changed in 2010 from the Bookbinders’ Guild of New York in order to more clearly reflect the composition of our membership. In the past few years, meeting topics have broadened to cover a wider range of issues affecting the book business. Our program calendar runs from September to June, featuring one event per month. These events provide occasions for members to learn from guest speakers who are among the leading figures in their fields. It also provides an excellent opportunity to network and socialize. In addition to two major annual events, the Book Barge Bash and the Book Show, the Guild also organizes and co-funds annual field trips to book manufacturers, cover material plants, paper mills, and a book repair facility. As an active supporter of the Literacy Assistance Center of New York (LAC), the Guild has raised more than $300,000 over the past twenty years by sponsoring the annual LAC Recognition Awards breakfast and an annual summer softball tournament in Central Park, featuring raffle prizes and free books for children. If you would like to become a member of the Guild or would like to join one of our organizing committees, please contact any member of the executive board or executive committee, or visit our website at bigny.org.

LETTER FROM THE BOOK SHOW CO-CHAIRS WE ARE SO PROUD TO PRESENT the winners of the 30th Annual New York Book Show. This year’s entries did not disappoint! We were amazed by the quality of submissions across all categories, including our newest category, Self-Published Covers. Welcome, Self-Pubs! We would like to thank the publishers, designers, production supervisors, suppliers, and manufacturers who helped create the most beautiful, innovative, and surprising books of 2015. It was a delight viewing the seemingly endless ways you combined paper and ink. Thank you to the judges for taking the time to review over 600 submissions. We know the number of entries made for a full day of work, but after reviewing comments like, “satisfying tactile and sensory experience,” “there’s a treat on almost every page,” “sensuous text paper,” and, “great use of pink!” we’d like to think you had at least a little fun along the way. A very special thank you to the Board of the Book Industry Guild of New York and members of the Book Show Committee. The names of those involved is on the preceding and following pages. These volunteers contributed countless hours in meetings, over email, and on the floor unpacking, sorting, moving, and re-packing hundreds of books, covers, and jackets. Without their dedication, enthusiasm, humor, and incredible ability to produce snacks, we would not have been able to produce this stunning show. Finally, we would like to thank you for your support of the New York Book Show and the Book Industry Guild of New York. We hope you enjoy the Show, and we look forward to seeing you at future Guild events. Christine Davis Sara Maher Co-Chairs, 30th Annual New York Book Show

SLADE HOUSE

I’ve never met a boy who calls his mum by her Christian name. Dad’d call it “very modern.” “I didn’t say she is lying. It’s just that he’s an incredibly famous virtuoso violinist.” Jonah spits his damson stone into tall pink daisies. “Even incredibly famous virtuoso violinists need friends. So how old are you, Nathan? Thirteen?” “Bang on.” I spit my stone farther. “You?” “Same,” he says. “My birthday’s in October.” “February.” I’m older, if shorter. “What school do you go to?” “School and I never saw eye to eye,” says Jonah. “So to speak.” I don’t understand. “You’re a kid. You have to go. It’s the law.” “The law and I never got on, either. ’Nother damson?” “Thanks. But what about the truancy officer?” Jonah’s face may mean he’s puzzled. Mrs. Marconi and me have been working on “puzzled.” “The what officer?” I don’t get it. He must know. “Are you taking the piss?” Jonah says, “I wouldn’t dream of taking your piss. What would I do with it?” That’s kind of witty, but if I ever used it on Gaz Ingram he’d crucify me on the rugby posts. “Seriously, I’m taught at home.” “That must be ace. Who teaches you? Your mum?” Jonah says, “Our master,” and looks at me. His eyes hurt, so I look away. Master’s like a posh word for “teacher.” “What’s he like?”

· · · “Eat a damson, Nathan,” says Jonah, handing me a fruit from the tree. He sits down at the base of one tree, so I sit down against its neighbor. “Thanks.” Its warm slushy flesh tastes of early August mornings. “Is Yehudi Menuhin really visiting?” Jonah gives me a look I don’t understand. “Why on earth would Norah lie?”

“An incurable show-off,” sighs Norah Grayer. “Now, Rita, I do hope you won’t mind, but Yehudi Menuhin’s dropped by and I told him about your Debussy recital. He’s positively bursting to meet you.” Mum makes a face like an astonished kid from Peanuts: “The Yehudi Menuhin? He’s here? This afternoon?” Lady Grayer nods like it’s no big deal. “Yes, he had a ‘gig’ at the Royal Festival Hall last night, and Slade House has become his London bolt-hole-cum-pied-à-terre, as it were. Say you don’t mind?” “Mind?” says Mum. “Meeting Sir Yehudi? Of course I don’t mind, I just . . . can’t quite believe I’m awake.” “Bravissima.” Lady Grayer takes Mum by the arm and steers her towards the big house. “Don’t be shy—Yehudi’s a teddy bear. Why don’t you chaps”—she turns to Jonah and me—“amuse yourselves in this glorious sunshine for a little while? Mrs. Polanski’s making coffee éclairs, so be sure to work up an appetite.”

THREE KINDS OF DESPAIR

[ 196 0 – 197 7 ]

A student came to a Zen master and said, “In what state of mind should I train myself, so as to find the truth?” Said the master, “There is no mind, so you cannot put it in any state. There is no truth, so you cannot train yourself for it.” “If there is no mind to train, and no truth to find,” said the student, “why do these monks gather before you every day to study?” “But I haven’t an inch of room here,” said the master, “so how could the monks gather? I have no tongue, so how could I teach them?” “Oh, how can you lie like this?” asked the student. “But if I have no tongue to talk to others, how can I lie to you?” asked the master. The student said sadly, “I cannot follow you. I cannot understand you.” “I cannot understand myself,” said the master. — z e n koa n

HONORIS CAUSA

JOHN MAKINSON, ED.

Honoris Causa

Recognizing the problem, Section 12 of the Human Rights Act 1998 bravely attempts to salvage the position. The section is headed ‘Freedom of Expression’. Promisingly, the opening paragraph reads: ‘This section applies if a court is considering whether to grant any relief which, if granted, might affect the exercise of the Convention right to freedom of expression.’ However, Section 12(3) stipulates that the court should not grant relief so as to restrain publication before trial unless satisfied that the applicant is likely to establish that the publication would be allowed. Furthermore, Section 12(4) provides that the court must give particular regard to the importance of the Convention right to freedom of expression. Section 12 of the Human Rights Act is plainly designed to strengthen the ability of a newspaper or another publication to resist an application for an injunction. The reference to a privacy code was no doubt intended by Parliament to cover such bodies as the Press Complaints Commission. In practice, however, it seems to me that the English courts have faced a stream of actions whose principal object is to prevent the publication of material defamatory of the claimant. If this is clear when the application for an injunction is made, then the court may refuse to grant an injunction. But there have been many occasions recently when the court has been persuaded that an injunction should be granted if the interest which the claimant is seeking to protect is other than to prevent the publication of defamatory material. The court may grant an injunction in order to protect the right of the claimant, for example, to confidentiality. My concern is that the rigour of the principle or ‘rule’ established in the nineteenth century in Bonnard v. Perryman is being eroded despite the valiant attempt to preserve it in Section 12 of the Human Rights Act 1998. Section 12(4) is clear in its language. What it provides is that the court must give particular regard to the right to freedom of expression. This vital provision should not be eroded by judges whether in England or in India.

over and over it. I can’t see it’s anything but coincidence. You look at the statements.” She tapped the file. “Luke wasn’t Mr. Popularity among his coworkers, his former relationships. Still, none of them look any better for it than I do, at this point. What it looks like is somebody hired a torch. Hell, I’d say the son of a bitch hired one himself to slap back at me, but the timing’s too tight for that to fly.” “Pretty tight,” John agreed. “But it’s an angle—the hiring a torch to slap at you. Maybe you ought to think of somebody you might’ve ticked off lately.” “Cops are always ticking somebody off,” she muttered. “Ain’t that the truth?” He eased back, smiled when Fran brought their pizza to the table. “How’s it going, sweetie?” “It’s going good.” But her hand moved over to rub at Reena’s shoulder. “Now, make my baby sister put that work away and eat something.” “See what I can do. Put it away,” John advised when Fran walked off. “You’ll handle any heat that comes your way on this. Unofficially, nobody’s looking at you. You’ve got a solid record because you earned it, and your alibi holds. Set it aside, let the system work.” “Yeah. You know, John, I don’t know if I chose my career or it chose me. Fire seems to follow me around. Sirico’s, the first boy I really cared about, Hugh. Now this.” He slid a slice of pizza onto his plate. “Fate’s a mean bastard.”

or better or worse, it was done. Reena’s heart was pounding, her throat bone-dry, and at the base of her belly was a little tickle that could have been panic or excitement. She’d bought herself a house. She stood on the white marble steps, the keys in her clammy hand. Settlement was over, the papers were signed. She had a mortgage. And a bank loan, she thought, that stretched out so long she’d be ready for retirement when it was paid off. Did the math, didn’t you? she reminded herself. You can make this work. It was time she owned property. Oh God, she was a property owner. And hadn’t she fallen in love with this house? It was so like home. What that said about her, she wasn’t entirely sure, but it had been love at first sight. Everything about it had called to her. The location, the familiarity, even the slightly tired interior that just begged her to liven it up, her way. It even had a backyard—maybe it was narrow enough to spit from line to line, but it was an actual yard with actual grass. It even had a tree. Which meant she’d have to mow grass and rake leaves, which meant

TRYING AGAIN TO STOP TIME JALAL BARZANJI

Returning to Autumn

I Want To Be Named Home

I’m not sure you too can return to autumn, but I must say it’s been a good return for me: these past six days

2007

I get good sleep, I rise early, I get to see the leaves fall, and now that my words have turned into an orchard, I don’t need much. I pick ripened fruit every morning and thank autumn for helping me reconcile with myself.

AMAZING FANTASTIC INCREDIBLE STAN LEE

We should start at the very beginNing, I guesS.

Anyway, I was born in the apartment that I first lived in. My father was Jack Lieber, my mother, Celia. He was a Romanian imMigrant who came to the States when he was young; my mom was born in New York.

And now I wilL do my best to telL you how it alL came about, with some digresSions along the way.

I canNot telL you how wonderful it is to seE you alL. I’ve spent decades of my life trying to entertain and divert you.

We were living in Washington Heights by that point, having moved out of the apartment on West 98th StreEt and West End Avenue.

hey!

And I was raised in--

There’s a big screEn there!

I was born in New York City on December 28, 1922.

Nine years later my kid brother, LarRy, was born. We never realLy got a chance to know each other because by the time he was 5, I was 14 and playing with older kids.

I’d spend most of my time reading.

I loved to read.

Why should I loOk at you guys when I can loOk at myself?!

Although, damn, I gotTa say, it loOks pretTy goOd. Joanie did a great job.

Hold it. I can’t seE my face!

And not just that, but my mother loved to watch me read. My whole adult life, I’ve never beEn to a barber. Joanie always cuts my hair.

Or chew gum.

Or breathe.

This is ridiculous! I don’t wanNa stare at the back of my head!

But I’lL get to her in a while. First things first: back to me.

I probably got my self-confidence from the fact that my mother thought everything I did was brilLiant.

GOOD FOOD, GOOD LIFE CURTIS STONE

Roasted Beet and Quinoa Salad with Goat Cheese, Fennel, and Pecans the tarragon vinaigrette used here coats and clings to the grains of quinoa, infusing them with plenty of tangy flavor. i love the way the pecans interplay with the nuttiness of the grain. Farro, spelt, bulgur, and even wild or brown rice also work nicely in this salad.

1. To roast the beets, preheat the oven to 350°F.

2. Place the beets in a roasting pan or baking dish, rub them with 1 tablespoon of the oil, and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cover the pan tightly with foil and roast the beets for about 1 hour, or until they are just tender. Cool slightly. 3. Meanwhile, to cook the quinoa, heat the remaining tablespoon of oil in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the quinoa and cook, stirring, for about 3 minutes, or until the quinoa is toasted. Add 1⅔ cups water and bring to a boil. Cover the pan, reduce the heat to medium-low, and simmer for about 20 minutes, or until the quinoa has absorbed the liquid and is tender. Turn off the heat, uncover the pan, and cool completely. 4. When the beets are cool enough to handle, using a towel, rub off the skin. Cut each beet into 6 wedges and place in a medium bowl. 5. To make the vinaigrette, in a small bowl, whisk the vinegar, shallots, oil, and tarragon to blend. Season the vinaigrette to taste with salt and pepper. Add 3 tablespoons of the vinaigrette to the cooked beets and toss to coat. Let stand for 30 minutes. 6. In a large bowl, toss the arugula and fennel with enough of the vinaigrette to coat lightly. Season with salt.

Swan The life and dance of anna pavlova

The world is big. Anna is small. The snow is everywhere and all around.

Swan

But one night . . . One night, her mother takes her to the ballet, and everything is changed—Anna finds a beauty inside herself that she cannot contain. So begins the journey of a girl who will one day grow up to be the most famous prima ballerina of all time, and who will inspire legions of dancers after her: the brave, the generous, the transcendently gifted Anna Pavlova.

SWAN

LAUREL SNYDER

Finally, she steps onto the stage alone . . . and sprouts white wings, a swan. She weaves the notes, the very air into a story. All those sitting see. They stare— Anna is a bird in flight, a whim of wind and water. Quiet feathers in a big loud world. Anna is the swan.

For five bright years the dancers swirl around Anna. The curtains rise and fall.

Acetate transforms image in a smart and terrifying way. Very effective use of special materials. Brilliant and creative solution to the folded edges of the acetate so it lays flat.

and learning from each other, inevitably provoking such observations as “I hadn’t realized how funny that part was!” “The Blow Up” emphasizes the closeness of close reading, but it also grounds and enlivens more general discussions in the text—removing parts from the whole and putting the whole back into conversation with its parts. After having extracted, magnified, transformed, performed, and resituated individual sentences, students will feel more authoritative when the conversation widens to larger themes and ideas. They will also not be afraid to take apart the text, to zoom in and out of any page, drawing in or blocking out what they already know for the sake of testing new claims or ideas. Students will not only feel comfortable referring to specific passages, but they will find it easier to refer to one another’s readings as evidence and counterevidence. Most importantly, they will enjoy the opportunity to converse freely with each other (instead of answering the instructor’s questions), tracking their own interpretative moves and choices in a collective and creative encounter.

TWINNED TOWERS

learned that, instead of the first model of the Monument to the Third International, the House of the Unions (Дом союзов) had decided to exhibit a samovar. This displacement, or replacement, represented the very beginning of a process that would eventually lead, in 1933, to the exhibition “Artists of Russia” in which Tatlin’s artworks, in a gesture not unlike that of the notorious “Degenerate Art” exhibition in Germany, were relegated to a small hall dedicated to “Formalist excesses,” and state-sponsored art critics derided him as “no artist whatsoever.”101 Tatlin— who, after building the model of the tower, worked for several years on Letatlin, the individualized aerial bicycle that he hoped could be mass produced—ended up not soaring to the sky like Dedalus (or, for that matter, Leonardo), but, mostly unappreciated, painting portraits and still-lives of flowers, with nary a spiral in sight. Meanwhile Yeats, in the last decade of his life, still clung to his vision of gyres “running on,” yet increasingly scorned the sort of artist or poet “now growing up . . . all out of shape from toe to top,” and retreated to the solidity of localized native stone, singing, at times bitterly, of human unsuccess.

Their inevitable “failures” aside—the word “fail” is etymologically related not only to “lacking” but also to “falling”—Tatlin’s and Yeats’s twinned spiral towers of the early post–Great War period amply demonstrate the durability of their makers’ grand and totalizing ambitions, ambitions that include not only ways of making art (with or without “Personality”) but also ways of activating history and theatrically giving shape to the future. Although spirals later in the twentieth century never again achieved quite the earnest, energetic grandiosity with which they were associated in Yeats’s and Tatlin’s work, and although that grandiosity would, in fact, itself come to be derided, the spiral ambition itself still must be admired, wondered at. Next we explore two equally wonderful forms of spiraling, though ones associated less with energy than with entropy: those of James Joyce, who of course had his own interest in flying, Dedalus-like, and that of Marcel Duchamp, who had his own notions of spirals “running on.”

PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A THRUSTING SPIRAL In 1929, the editors of the newly formed, Paris-based English-language publishing house Black Sun Press commissioned a drawing of James Joyce from the Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi for a limited edition of fragments of the ongoing Work in Progress that they planned to publish later that year.1 Brancusi produced two drawings that certainly resembled Joyce but did not have the modern signature style sought by the editors, so the editors asked the artist to try again. This time, Brancusi created a far more abstract work, titled Symbole de Joyce, consisting of three vertical, straight lines of varying lengths spaced at intervals along the paper and, on the right half of the drawing, a large Archimedean spiral (figure 28). Brancusi later commented that this portrait captured le sens du pousser (the sense of pushing or thrusting) he thought to be his model’s
