Presented by the Book Industry Guild of New York
is a member-operated professional organization composed of individuals from every aspect of the book publishing and book manufacturing industries. It sponsors educational seminars and trips, holds informational programs, and helps raise money to support literacy, in addition to creating opportunities for junior level publishing people to learn from a variety of senior staff. Originally the Bookbinders’ Guild of New York, the Guild was formed in 1925 by a group of thirty-five craftspeople from the many binderies in and around New York City. These pioneers gathered monthly to discuss issues, brainstorm through common problems, and address areas for improvement. These engagements helped develop many of the processes that we take for granted today. ∞ Letter from the BIGNY President On behalf of the Book Industry Guild of New York, I welcome you to the 33rd New York Book Show. We are lucky to be back at Battery Gardens again this year to celebrate what many of us consider to be the highlight of BIGNY’s calendar year. Tonight our Book Show Committee’s year-long effort brings you a winning list selected by our judges as the best-designed and best-crafted books of 2018. Thank you to our Book Show Co-Chairs, Edson Atwood and Lauren Lapinski, for leading a dedicated team of volunteers to make this year’s show another success. As our volunteer base continues to grow, I am impressed by so many new ideas which strengthen the show’s vitality. This year, we are especially excited about our new book show marketing and communications effort led by Zachary Lutz and Christine Whalen whose work ensures us that we are carrying the New York Book Show forward for many years to come. ∞ Letter from the Co-Chairs Good evening, and welcome to the 33rd annual New York Book Show! The mission of the Book Industry Guild of New York’s annual Book Show has always been to showcase the finest and most diverse in book design and production. Art directors, designers, typographers, prep houses, production managers, paper suppliers, printers, and binders—all spend months to help get a book out onto the shelves for eager readers to enjoy. Thousands of great books are published each year, and tonight we are privileged to showcase some of the best produced books of 2018. We were fortunate to receive over 500 entries for this year’s show and see such a wide range of artistic covers and books, everything from the simple to the most elaborate. All were carefully considered by our talented panel of judges. We thank each and every one of these judges for putting in the time and consideration needed to evaluate so many great submissions. Because of their diligence and the tough choices they made, we are able to present you with the winners. As you view the books on display, you will see all of the hard work

Dave Barrett

Dave Barrett’s first job was at a subsidiary publisher that no longer exists. Now, more than twenty years later—across a career that began in adult books (St. Martin’s Press, Random House) and flourished in the children’s market (Simon & Schuster, Scholastic, MacKids)—he is managing editor of Little Bee Books. His career highlights include (i) meeting his wife while working on Harry Potter; (ii) working into the wee hours in a corner office in the Flatiron Building updating Let’s Go travel guides as students around the globe faxed in updates; (iii) pitching a shutout against the reigning champ—Village Voice—in the publishing softball league; (iv) winning Bonnier’s 2017 Rising Star Award against an international field; and (v) cofounding a formidable running squad for Macmillan. It has certainly been fun.
Anna Becker has been a designer in many capacities at Oxford University Press over the last nine years, starting as a cover and text designer. While she still works on catalog titles, she is now called a design process analyst. She focuses on helping the design team migrate through the nuances of the large systems changes that are happening at OUP, including design’s contribution to digital and multiformat publishing—specifically EPUB templates. She received her BA at the University of North Dakota and attended Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
Brigid Black is a production manager at Simon & Schuster, where she handles production for Avid Reader Press. Brigid is also the current recording secretary for BIGNY. Prior to S&S, she worked at Hachette Book Group, Sterling Publishing, and Penguin. Over the last eight years, Brigid has worked on everything from adult and children’s books, to first printings and reprints (including Hamilton: The Revolution), to box sets and origami kits. Brigid is the former chair of the Young to Publishing Group (YPG), and in 2016 her service was recognized by Publishers Weekly as a Star Watch honoree. An impassioned advocate for her field, Brigid has spoken to students at NYU and Villanova University (her alma mater) about careers in book publishing. She lives in Brooklyn with her wife and two cats.

Meg Botteon Meg Botteon is a senior development editor in the higher education group at Oxford University Press. A graduate of the University of Minnesota and New York University, Meg has been a college publishing professional for more than twenty years. At Oxford, Meg has been fortunate to work with leading scholars who are also enthusiastic and innovative teachers. In partnership with these authors, Meg has developed market-leading first editions for courses in world religions, history, women’s and gender studies, sociology, and classical mythology. Meg began her college publishing career at Bedford/St. Martin’s, and before joining Oxford she worked at Houghton Mifflin and Pearson. Her favorite educational work, however, was teaching English and American literature at an independent high school in Brooklyn.

John Clifford is the creative director at Think Studio, designing brand identities, websites, print materials, and books. Starting his design career at Chronicle Books, he then led and designed projects for Pantone, Saks Fifth Avenue, Martha Stewart, Barnes & Noble, and David Byrne while at Doyle Partners and Platinum Design. His work has won many awards, including AIGA 50 Books | 50 Covers, HOW International Design Awards, New York Book Show, and PRINT Regional Design Annual. Publishing clients include Abrams, Melcher Media, The Monacelli Press, Peachpit Press, Quarto, Rockport, Sterling Publishing, and Yale School of Architecture. He teaches web and interactive design, and has taught typography and graphic design history. John is also the author of the book Graphic Icons: Visionaries Who Shaped Modern Graphic Design, and he has written for AIGA, Communication Arts, and Fast Company’s Co.Design.
Patty Collins has been at Random House for nearly thirteen years, working mostly on licensed books. She has been in the industry for nearly thirty years. Some of the major licensors she works with are Disney, Nickelodeon, Universal, Mattel, and Netflix. She also handles safety and social compliance for the children’s division. She began her career at Putnam working on picture books and licensed books and then worked at HarperCollins for ten years on their Festival imprint titles. She loves working on licensed books, especially the fast pace and the close collaboration that follows with her editors and designers. Getting to work on so many varied formats means there are always new challenges!
David DeWitt is a senior designer at HarperCollins Children’s Books. He previously worked for Little Bee Books and Scholastic. He studied industrial design and fiction writing at the University of Cincinnati, and is delighted to have found a career in children’s publishing.
Marina Drukman is a Ukrainianborn graphic designer and art director. She graduated from the School of Visual Arts in NYC, and began her career at Spot Design. She then moved on to Picador, where she fell in love with book design. She later took on a senior designer position at the iconic Life magazine and then an art director position at Elle Decor. She is currently a creative director of Melville House. Her freelance clients include Time Inc., Condé Nast, FSG, Picador, St. Martin’s Press, Bloomsbury Publishing, Simon & Schuster, W. W. Norton, Catapult, Counterpoint, ESPN, Abbeville Press, Radius Books, Topic.com, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Generation Human Rights, and many others. Marina’s work has been recognized by many major organizations, such as Art Directors Club, SPD, Graphis, AIGA 50/50, PRINT, and New York Book Show. It’s regularly featured on design blogs, such as Casual Optimist, Bookslut, Spine magazine, Flavorwire, and others.

Victoria Fogarty is a sales representative at Phoenix Color. She has been a part of the publishing industry for more than thirty years. As a sales representative, she has had the pleasure and privilege to work alongside production and design to help produce amazing jackets, covers, and books. She loves to travel, paint, garden, and cook and absolutely loves to spend time with her family.
Cassie Gonzales is an associate designer at Farrar, Straus, and Giroux Books for Young Readers and Roaring Brook Press at Macmillan Children’s, designing everything from picture books to young adult novels. Prior to her time at Macmillan, she worked at Little Brown Books for Young Readers, and held internships at HarperCollins, Penguin Random House, and Macmillan in both adult and children’s design departments. She is a semirecent graduate of Pratt Institute with a BFA in graphic design and is taking continuing education courses at the School of Visual Arts.
Thomas Haggerty is originally from Bristol, England. He studied archaeology and anthropology at Oxford University and then moved to New York shortly after graduating. Since then he has worked in the image licensing industry for the last fifteen years. In that time, he has had the privilege to have worked on countless book designs with an array of publishers and designers helping to find and clear the perfect image for each project.
Stephanie Huntwork is the senior art director for Clarkson Potter, Harmony, and Rodale at Penguin Random House. She has art directed and designed award-winning cookbooks for authors including Hugh Acheson, Alex Guarnaschelli, Gina Homolka, and Ronni Lundy, as well as other lifestyle, design, and gift titles. She enjoys distance running through Queens where she lives with her husband and two children.

Elena Iaffa-Coln is the advertising manager at Columbia University Press. Her first job was with Penguin Group USA (before it became Penguin Random House) as a marketing manager for DK Publishing. At CUP, Elena manages advertising in print media, including account relationships and ad production, for a wide range of titles in a variety of disciplines, from politics, history, religion, philosophy, and Asian studies, to Russian fiction in translation. Elena lives with her son in Astoria, Queens, and in her spare time, she loves to read, explore New York City, and indulge in the photography hobby. This is the first year that Elena served as a book cover judge, and she is very grateful for the opportunity.
Jeanette Limondjian is a media expert with extensive experience in developing communication strategies and innovative publications that engage broad audiences. She began her career on the founding team of Barnes & Noble, becoming a key executive in the retail and publishing divisions. She helped to start the Barnes & Noble proprietary publishing division which, under her tenure, grew to be one of the largest publishers of illustrated books in the world. In 2012, Jeanette started Shelter Harbor Press, a publishing company dedicated to creating soundly written and beautifully illustrated books that provide an introduction to difficult nonfiction subjects through the art of storytelling.
Mariel López is an editor who acquires books in Spanish for Scholastic. She grew up in Mexico City, where she studied literature and film. Mariel lives in New York City and has published a variety of libros ilustrados by award-winning authors and illustrators from Latin America, Italy, Spain, Mexico, and Cuba.
Maria Massey is a senior production editor and deputy copy chief, digital, at Alfred A. Knopf. She has been with the company since 2003.

Lindsay Munnelly is a recent graduate of Indiana University–Bloomington, where she earned her doctorate in English literature. Currently she works for Oxford University Press as an assistant editor for Oxford Art Online.
Jo Obarowski is currently the creative director of Sterling Publishing. Her previous experience includes seven years at Barnes & Noble’s in-house publishing group creating proprietary books and kits before it merged with Sterling in 2009. She has held prior positions at John Wiley & Sons, HarperCollins, and HBO. She is very interested in creating book as objects—working with a team of talented illustrators, photographers, production designers, and printers to push bookbinding to its limits. Her favorite color is PMS 519 matte. It is deep purple, in case you are interested. When she is not sitting at a computer thinking about typefaces and deadlines, she can be found at home or in a movie theater with her two teenage sons and her husband.
Casey Sears is a production coordinator at Penguin Random House. She has worked in book publishing for three years, gaining experience with a wide variety of formats, four-color work, and vendors both domestic and overseas. She has a strong passion for book production and was excited to see this year’s submissions to the New York Book Show!
Tyler Simnick is a marketing coordinator for Oxford University Press, working primarily with titles from the history list. Before starting at OUP in 2017, he interned for Archipelago Books and Fletcher and Company, during which time he worked with a wide variety of books from different genres. Originally from Indianapolis, Tyler earned his BA in English, philosophy, and religious studies, as well as his MA in English with a focus on critical theory, from Indiana University– Bloomington. Prior to moving to New York to pursue a career in publishing, Tyler lived and worked in Madrid, Spain, as an English teacher in a public elementary school. He currently lives in Brooklyn, where he can be found cooking, writing, strolling through Prospect Park, and taking pictures. He travels whenever he gets the chance.

Brock Waldron is a lead art director at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt where he has been working on high school programs, both print and digital. He is a multidisciplinary designer with over thirty years of experience in the educational and entertainment industries. He has led design teams to create large textbook programs, financial collateral, and websites. He has also worked independently on CD covers, theatrical posters, and logos. He worked on the HMH Science Dimensions cover program that won best in category at the New England Book Show last year. He has worked at 212 Associates, Carbone Smolan, Bill Smith Studio, and his own design studio. But best of all, you can always count on him for a good laugh!
Chris Wallace has been a cover designer and art director with Wiley for twenty years. His first cover design was a book titled Otters, for which he won the prestigious “B+ for Creativity” award at Olive Elementary School in 1974. Since then he has worked as a freelancer and staff designer for numerous publishers and clients. His work has included branding, packaging, and advertising; but with hundreds of cover design credits, books are what he enjoys most.

is a member-operated professional organization composed of individuals from every aspect of the book publishing and book manufacturing industries. It sponsors educational seminars and trips, holds informational programs, and helps raise money to support literacy, in addition to creating opportunities for junior level publishing people to learn from a variety of senior staff. Originally the Bookbinders’ Guild of New York, the Guild was formed in 1925 by a group of thirty-five craftspeople from the many binderies in and around New York City.
