BIGS & LITTLES
Big Ayush and Little Ryder118 years ago, the youth mentoring movement was born right here in our beloved New York City. In the decades since, Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City (BBBS of NYC) has come to represent the very essence of what makes this city so special. New York City— where strangers meet at corner coffee carts, stand side-by-side on the subway each morning, and come together for weekend block parties on neighborhood streets—thrives on human connections, and this is exactly what BBBS of NYC creates each day.
From watching the Mets play at Citi Field in Queens to exploring the beauty of Prospect Park in Brooklyn to visiting the Bronx Zoo for STEM inspirations, our matches experience mentorship moments that are steeped in New York City's commitment to ignite youth potential. New Yorkers show up and show out for each other, and nowhere else is this level of care and commitment more visible than within our BBBS of NYC community. Our programs respond to the interests and aspirations of our Littles and support our Bigs to take a stand for young New Yorkers. Together, our matches remain true to the spirit of this city, one of connection to something larger than the individual, in a place where dreams are made; leaders are born; relationships are built across bridges, tunnels, and subways; and the biggest possible futures are created.
WE ARE NEW YORK CITY
The Community-Based Mentoring Program is our traditional one-toone mentoring program, where Bigs and Littles use New York City as their playground for personal, academic, and social development. Matches adventure on outings together while working toward achieving S.M.A.R.T. goals that range from self-confidence to relationship building. Big Narmeen and Little Allure, though only matched for six months, immediately connected over their shared passions for advocating for others and finding new opportunities that push them out of their comfort zones. Together, they have already gone bowling in Chelsea Piers, explored the New Museum, painted pottery, and worked on goals related to organization, problem solving, and positive thinking. Allure invited Narmeen to her eighthgrade graduation, where she proudly introduced her Big to her friends.
LETTER FROM THE CEO AND THE BOARD PRESIDENT
92% of Community-Based Littles reported that they felt close to their Big, consistent with our pre-pandemic metrics.
Dear BBBS of NYC Community,
As two proud New Yorkers who have built our careers, raised our families, and grounded our lives in this great city of access and opportunity, we are honored to act in service of young people as CEO and Board President of Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City (BBBS of NYC).
To love New York City is to love its people, including its youth, who are forging their own paths and teaching us how to lead in new ways. To care for the future of our city is to invest in creating meaningful connections and networks for its youth, so that the next generation of leaders can imagine and transform their biggest possibilities into reality.
Throughout its 118-year history, BBBS of NYC has matched generations of Littles with generations of Bigs to help them navigate an ever-evolving city. Today, our Littles face challenges unique to this moment, and still, their resilience inspires us to do more as a community of mentors, advocates, partners, and donors.
It is up to us as New Yorkers to ensure all youth—across diverse backgrounds, experiences, and identities—have access to impactful mentorship. The relationships we create for our Littles and their Bigs—and which we help to grow longer and stronger—generate the excitement, curiosity, and social capital needed to ignite personal and professional success. These connections that turn into opportunities embody the true essence of New York City. And like New Yorkers, our BBBS of NYC community shows up consistently and gives of itself every day.
The following pages highlight the many ways our youth mentoring programs and services illustrate the very essence of our New York City community. Because we know you care about this city as much as we do, we invite you to continue playing an active role in writing its next chapter by investing in the potential of young New Yorkers.

For over three decades, the Workplace Mentoring Program has matched high school students with mentors from among our 54 partner companies. Matches follow a curriculum, facilitated by a BBBS of NYC program manager, that engages youth in developing social-emotional learning skills, identifying strengths, and preparing for post-secondary opportunities. Big Rory and Little Anthony have been matched for a year and a half and have bonded over sports, music, and shared laughs. According to Anthony, Rory gives great advice and consistently motivates him to chase his dreams, which is exactly what Anthony has done, by getting his lifeguard certification, joining the varsity soccer team, serving as student government Vice President, and winning first place in the Manhattan College School of Engineering’s Structural Competition.

Increase in Median Match Length over Four-Year Period
OVER THE LAST FOUR YEARS, BBBS OF NYC HAS MORE THAN DOUBLED OUR MEDIAN MATCH LENGTH (AMOUNT OF TIME OUR BIGS AND LITTLES STAY TOGETHER) FOR OUR ONE-TO-ONE COMMUNITY-BASED MATCHES.
The College and Career Success Program (CCS) helps students, along with their mentors and families, navigate the transition to college and take steps toward achieving career goals. The CCS team provides college access resources for Littles while they are still in high school and, upon their graduation, provides them with support to persist through college and develop the knowledge and social capital needed to break into their desired industries. Little Idalia and Big Melisa transitioned to CCS after three years in the Workplace Mentoring Program. Idalia views Melisa as her role model and is thankful that Melisa helped her explore a range of career pathways. After a successful first year of college, Idalia was inspired to pursue a degree in marketing, just like her Big.

BBBS of NYC is committed to advancing inclusive practices and programming and prioritizes supporting everyone in their intersectional identities, including immigrant and LGBTQ+ community members. The New American Program (NAP) brings awareness of BBBS of NYC mentoring services to Chinese-, Korean-, and Spanish-speaking communities and provides bilingual program managers, who equip matches with culturally competent supports and resources. The Immigration and Language Access Initiative leads diverse cultural celebrations for our community and provides translation and language access services.
The LGBTQ+ Initiative focuses on building affirmation and inclusion through program innovation, such as our open gender-matching policy, and partners with LGBTQ+ organizations to provide targeted learning opportunities that ensure staff and Bigs are prepared to support the diverse needs of LGBTQ+ youth.

In partnership with precincts in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Upper Manhattan, Bigs in Blue is a collaboration with the NYPD that seeks to create and foster caring conversations between police officers and youth. The program is part of the NYPD’s Neighborhood Policing initiative, which aims to help officers connect with the communities they serve. Since its inception in 2017, Bigs in Blue has grown exponentially; in 2022, the program paired 158 youth with 48 officers across nine precincts. Together, youth and officers discuss community building and engagement, positive decision-making, internet safety, and effective communication.
