Photo by Joe Bickerstaff Beach BOOSTER was pleased to be a part of National Tree Day Planting Ceremony on Thursday, September 24th, at the Sports Park. Mayor Brian Smith spoke with local students and Ed Borczon of Tree Canada joined Todd Young and Jill Vanderburg of our local Beach Builders Home Hardware along with Parks Staff for the event. A number of students from Worsley Elementary School assisted The Town of Wasaga Beach Gardener Brent Daoust and other parks staff with the planting of fruit trees on Wednesday and attended the planting ceremony the following day. Beach Builders Supplies, Tree Canada and local schools were celebrating the 9th annual National Tree Day on September 23rd by planting sixty fruit bearing trees at the Wasaga Sports Complex in Wasaga Beach. The planting site at the Wasaga Sports Complex was chosen to be the home to these new trees because of space and the accessibility it offers citizens. The apple and pear trees can be used as a future food source for the Ministerial Food Bank and to compliment the community garden. “We're excited to work together with Tree Canada and Home Hardware Stores Limited on this important project,” said Jamie Vanderburg, Co-Dealer/Owner, Beach Builders Supplies. “We have enjoyed great support from the local community and this is an excellent opportunity to give back in a real and tangible way to thank our customers and community for their support over the years.” National Tree Day falls on the Wednesday of National Forest Week. This day is celebrated across the country with tree dedications, plantings, educational workshops, outdoor education walks, interpretive days, schoolyard plantings and seminars.
We are proud that Home Hardware is committed to improving the environment – now and for generations to come,” said Michael Rosen, President of Tree Canada. “To see such a widespread effort on the part of Home Dealers in communities across Canada is extremely inspiring and sets a great example for Canadians.” Tree Canada is a not-for-profit charitable organization established to encourage Canadians to plant and care for trees in urban and rural environments. Tree Canada engages Canadian companies, government agencies and individuals to support the planting of trees, the greening of schoolyards, and other efforts to sensitize Canadians to the benefits of planting and maintaining trees. To date, over 80 million trees have been planted, over 554 schoolyards have been greened, and Tree Canada has helped organize 11 national urban forest conferences.
