Visitors to Wasaga Beach will finally see exciting changes being made to welcome them back!

After 8 years of waiting for something... anything... to happen after the fire, it's very encouraging to see us moving forward with this and other great projects. Thanks to our forward thinking members of Council, Director of Economic Development and Tourism, Andrew McNeill and of course, Ryan & Garry Sawatzky for their creativeness.

Conceptual drawings show cool, retro kiosks providing existing and new local businesses with affordable access to our Main Beach area, an entertainment venue using the existing structures that will showcase local talent with a backdrop of our beautiful views and sunsets and eye catching Lifeguard Stations dotting the Main Beach area that will be illuminated at night creating beacons that can be seen from across the bay.

Point of View How can you successfully handle conflict?

I think we’re afraid of confrontation and yet, how is it not a part of almost everything we do? So that fear makes no sense, in the sense that it’s going to be around the corner everywhere we go, any job we have. Maybe not everyday, maybe not every week, but pretty often.

And the only key to that, I think is you’ve got to be square with the person. I really think it’s crucial that you stay calm and that you never abuse the person sitting across the desk from you or sitting across the way from you. They can get angry, they can make some poor choices. As the leader you cannot.

I managed a group of people in the old days and occasionally a confrontational difficult moment would arrive. What I found was that if you’re willing to look somebody in the eye and really see them, be with them for a moment with your eyes, with your attention and do that calmly. Never, ever abusively. Trying hard to imagine what it’s like to sit in their shoes, but deal with it calmly and look them in the eye and tell them what you think is true, it will go well. It would at least as go as well as you can expect.

“Here it is, here’s what I think. This is how we’re going to solve this problem or this is how I think we need to solve this problem,” and deal with that anger or deal that confrontation or whatever it is that’s going on, in a straight forward, unabusive way, calmly, breathing deeply, stay composed. I think it works.

El Nino could make the Great Lakes next winter not so wintry And what does that mean for water levels?

I will admit that I enjoy a turkey dinner with all of the trimmings as much as the next guy, but for me the real joy lies in the days that follow. Like most people we buy a bird much larger than we actually need, only to ensure that we have plenty of leftovers to keep us in a state of festive bliss for days to come.

Thanksgiving is a time to gather with family and friends and give thanks for the harvest. It is a time to feast and reflect on how blessed we are to live in such a rich and prosperous country. It is also a time to open our hearts and help those who are less fortunate. Please give generously to your local food bank this holiday season.

Turkey Frame Soup Carcass from cooked 10- to 12-lb turkey 3 quarts (12 cups) water 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper a few dried sage leaves 1 dried bay leaf 1/2 cup uncooked pearl barley 3 medium carrots diced about 1 1/2 cups 1 large onion, chopped about 1 cup 2 medium stalks celery, sliced about 1 cup 2 cups cut-up cooked turkey 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley Cut up a turkey carcass to fit 6-quart Dutch oven or stock pot. Add water, salt, pepper, sage and bay leaf. Heat to boiling over high heat; reduce heat to low. Cover; simmer 1 hour 30 minutes.

The NOAA forecast map above is the precipitation forecast for December 2015 through February 2016. The brown areas show there is a tendency for drier conditions. The winter dryness during El Niño is caused by two conditions. First, there is a tendency for the southern U.S. to be very stormy during El Niños, and the storm track stays down south. Second, as you might expect the warmer air over the lakes cuts down on the lake-effect snow process.

In summary, we can expect less ice cover as a result of warmer air and water temperatures. When air temperatures are lower than water temperatures, increased evaporation results, and this year, that could last throughout the winter (such as happened in several winters between 2000 and 2012). If this prediction holds true, the result will be lower water levels come next spring.

Dianna's contacts and constant search for entertainment news, keeps bringing us professional and entertaining interviews with interesting people from our area and around the globe. In addition to contributing to our local radio and publication, Dianna is always willing to offer her time to be involved in community events and positive initiatives.

Dianna is Co-chair of the Wasaga Beach Film Festival and has contributed tirelessly, providing countless hours towards continually improving the Red Carpet Awards Gala and set the bar for Wasaga Beach events this past year at the 4th Annual Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival. She has brought in big names to our town either by video greetings at our Gala or in person, including Rick Mercer, Brent Butt, Dale Goldhawk to name a few. Through her professional connections, Dianna is singlehandedly responsible for attracting the many international submissions to the Wasaga Beach Festival and she continues to strive to make the production better each year.

Dianna has also been involved in the Wasaga Beach Woman's Business Association and has Co-hosted the annual Wasaga Beach Santa Claus Parade on Rogers TV for 4 years.

All of us Beach BOOSTER thank Dianna for her contributions and efforts in bringing good things to our town and Wasaga Beach is lucky to have her as a valued part of our community.

Lyric Dubee Releases 2 Albums, Music Video Our very own talented, singer, songwriter and guitarist, Lyric Dubee who personalized his own style of music known as “Revolution Rock” a combination of rock, pop, blues and jazz, held a CD release party to a sold out audience at the Art Centre in Barrie on September 19th.

It was a big night for the Barrie native Lyric only 17years-old releasing not one but two albums “Black Ice” and “Combat of Love” along with a music video titled “Young & Restless”. Lyric decided to hold off releasing the third album as two albums were already out however with the fourth album in the wings and upcoming tours he thought it would be best to release both. As far as how different these albums are: “The fourth album “Combat of Love” is a big change it's really more a direct hit at the pop rock genre,” said Lyric. The fourth album produced by Grammy Award Winning Producer, Warren Huart.

Backing Lyric on stage was his band members: Steve Costello, guitar from Toronto; Hunter Craig, bass from Los Angeles and Bobby Rosson, drums from Portland. This band created by legendary photographer and manager, Robert Knight from Las Vegas who refers to the band as “overqualified group of young men”. Robert is a long time advertising photographer who also specializes in the rock and roll music industry. He is best known for his guitar legend archive having worked with such artists as Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Led Zepplin, Stevie Ray Vaughan to name a few.

Robert discovered Lyric via a photographer named “Dave Dunlop”. At the time he was nourishing a project called “The Brotherhood of the Guitar”. “He was such a high level of a guitarist, I invited him to be part of it and started talking to the family and it evolved naturally,” said Robert Knight. He's been working with Lyric for a year.

“I've never met anybody so focus so young he's already on his fourth album, he's only just 17, he's North American Karate Champion, he just got a Master Degree in acoustic and jazz guitar really focus that's what it takes,” expressed Robert.

Robert refers to Lyric as having a very strong “it factor”. As a photographer he worked with some famous people like Rachel Hunter when she was a teenager, he certainly has a good eye for spotting people.

In the works is a trip to Japan and China. Lyric is a big fan of the Japanese culture and he looks forward to playing music in a different country.

Robert was quick to respond: “We can't talk too much about it. What we do in Japan could precipitate a global kind of awareness of Lyric.

Currently talking to several booking agents.”

A North American tour is scheduled to follow after Japan in the U.S. but Lyric is confident dates will be set in Canada especially in and around Ontario.

We all know that casinos do not attract families. We get that. On the other hand casinos attract other businesses that attract families.

Consider scenario #1.

We wait for years until an investor comes to town to build infrastructure on Beaches 1&2 waterfront to attract families and they have to develop a business case on the basis of 90 days of business per year pending good weather to show returns for the investment. This we watch play out for another 10 years and watch our town disintegrate while our property values drop down to record low levels. Who in their right mind would take such a career limiting move as an employee of a major hotel chain or entertainment company to even propose such a business case?

Let’s look at scenario #2 We have one experienced newly hired director of tourism and economic development come up with an innovative urban model proposal for attracting a casino operator to build a casino operation that presents synergies towards building an integrated economic development plan for Beaches 1 &2. That in the end fits in the overall vision for the citizens of the community.

It’s much easier to create a value proposal for new business entrants when you have a bird in the hand that will be operating 365 days of the year and paying its fair share of infrastructure costs. Let’s face the facts, the most valuable strategic advantage that we possess in Wasaga Beach is the waterfront. How could we even think we could be successful in attracting an operator associated with the Ontario Lottery and Gaming (OLG) in zone C7 if we don’t play the waterfront option card? Do we actually think we have some control over savvy business owners that have many options to choose from?

Using Boogie Man tactics of painting a picture that we will not attract visitor families by putting one facility on 14 kilometers of the world’s longest fresh water beach is ludicrous. Did the City of Vancouver get it wrong when they approved the Edgewater Casino that is located on the shores of False Creek next to BC Place and Rogers Arena? Check out Edgewater Casino’s website. Read about their vision and focus areas. They are connected to the community and work hand in hand with the community.

Maybe the notion of “the waterfront is no place for a casino” made for a great wedge issue in the last municipal election but it certainly has no place in the process of coming up with innovative solutions where we are looking for an integrated economic development plan for our community. We are in “here and now” conditions with a town that has a strategic advantage of owning waterfront property. A casino and waterfront development are not mutually exclusive. People opposing economic alternative proposals could gain a lot more credibility if they actually came up with a few innovative proposals themselves instead of shooting down what could be good solutions for smart growth in our town. The old adage that “if you are not part of the solution, you must be part of the problem'?” still rings true. “Not saying, just saying” as a wise Beacher would say.

Population approx. 11,000. In the Regional Municipal of Waterloo on County Rds 21 & 86, 19 km North West of Kitchener. First known as Bristow’s Corners for the Englishmen John and Edward Bristow, who settled in 1835. The post office opened open in 1849 as West Woolwich, but the name was changed to Elmira in 1867 after the city in New York State.

Toward the end of the 19th century, many German and Pennsylvania Dutch settlers arrived, some of them old-order Mennonites whose descendants still shun modern inventions such as moter cars. The numerous black, horse-drawn buggies and their passengers wearing traditional Mennonite clothing, attract many tourists.

Lucas Bryant (born September 28, 1978) is a Canadian-American actor. Bryant is most well known for his role as Nathan Wuornos in the Syfy TV channel series Haven Bryant was born in Elmira, Ontario, Canada to Susan Hodges Bryant and M. Darrol Bryant he currently has dual Canadian and U.S. citizenship. His father is from North Dakota.

His mother was also born and raised in the United States. Bryant graduated from Elmira District Secondary School and studied acting at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario.

He was the star of the short-lived UPN television series Sex, Love & Secrets. For television, Bryant has appeared in the movies Playing House and More Sex and the Single Mom, as well as guest starred in the series Queer as Folk, Odyssey 5 and Playmakers.

He has also starred in Canadian television projects, including Crazy Canucks, An American in Canada and The Eleventh Hour.

Bryant has appeared on stage all over Canada in many productions, including The Crucible and The King and I. Bryant appeared as Gabe McCall on the CBC drama MVP: The Secret Lives of Hockey Wives. He currently stars in Haven, a TV series based on Stephen King's novel "The Colorado Kid". He and Haven co-star Emily Rose previously starred together in the 2010 "made-for-TV" suspensethriller Perfect Plan BuddyTV ranked him #72 on its list of "TV's Sexiest Men of 2011".

In late-2012, Bryant starred in the Lifetime original movie Merry In-Laws. Bryant played Peter, a teacher who becomes engaged to an astronomer. When she meets his parents she learns that they are really Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus. The film co-stars former Cheers stars George Wendt and Shelley Long as Mr. and Mrs. Clause. The film is directed by Leslie Hope who previously directed Bryant in A Very Merry Daughter of the Bride.

Bryant is married to Australian-born actress and personal trainer Kirsty Hinchcliffe. They have a daughter born in August 2008 and, as of July 2010, live in Santa Monica, California.

Corvette Lottery A Success For Wasaga Beach Rotarians

The Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach had another very successful year for their annual Corvette Lottery. On Monday October 5, 2015 twelve local charities were invited to a lunch meeting to accept the proceeds from the Corvette Lottery. President James Koehle declared “this year was particularly exciting as the lottery raised a record of $65 700 for 12 local charities.” The Corvette Lottery has raised over $500 000 over 16 years in existence. Proceeds from the Lottery has raised over $150 000 to RVH cancer centre and $91 500 to Collingwood General Marine Hospital. Lottery co-chairs Peter Wilson and Todd Young are looking forward to the 17th Annual Corvette Lottery next year.
