Point of View Dealing with Difficult People Sometimes it's not the work that makes work hard – it's the people. We've all been there before; you come into work positive and ready to take on the day only to get your optimism crushed by a difficult person in your office. Whether it's a difficult boss, difficult patient or difficult friend, we all deal with someone who is less than understanding every single day. This is why it is crucial to learn how to handle situations where you must come in contact with these people, especially if you have to work alongside them everyday.

Try to Understand. One common trend about situations when dealing with difficult people is misunderstood communication. Before jumping to conclusions, take the time to try to see where they're coming from and even though it may be difficult, give them the benefit of the doubt. They might not even realize that they're being difficult. We encounter people from all walks of life everyday and not everyone is going to communicate in the same way. Often, it's just a matter of understanding the other person's personality and communication style. You must take the time to try to understand how other people communicate and interact before making any judgments.

Sometimes all it takes is a simple conversation in a neutral area to solve your problem. Get with the person who you've been having trouble with and go out for coffee. Let them know you want to learn more about them, so you can work better together.

Last but not least, be the light. Keep in mind, whether or not they have an effect on your attitude is up to you.

Don't let the actions of someone else ruin your day.

Instead of stooping to their level, try lifting them up.

You'll be amazed at how just the smallest acts of kindness can warm even the coldest hearts. Make the decision to be a positive energy giver and you may even inspire them to do the same.

Quinoa Cakes Quinoa pronounced (keen wah) has often been touted as the food of the future. This ancient grain of the Andes has been cultivated for over 3,000 years. It is high in protein and grows well in dry soil. It is actually the seed of the quinoa plant and resembles a sesame seed in appearance. The seeds are covered with a bitter resin called saponin that should be rinsed off before cooking.

These patties cook up nice and crispy and can be served like a falafel in a pita pocket with diced tomatoes and lettuce or eaten just as they are with the roasted red pepper sauce.

2 1/2 tsp olive oil 1 onion finely chopped 2 cloves of garlic minced 1 tbsp ginger root 1 tsp curry powder 1/4 tsp hot pepper flakes 1 cup coarsly shredded carrots 1 cup quinoa rinsed 2 cups chicken stock 2 cups of fresh chopped spinach 2 eggs Line a bake sheet with tinfoil. Preheat oven to 400 degrees fahrenheit. In a large sauce pan heat 1 tbsp of the oil and cook the onion stirring occasionally for 4-5 minutes until soft. It's been a long time since we have seen a Great Lakes Freighter on Nottawasaga Bay, but Algorail was anchored off Beach Area 6 over night this past week. Christened April 1, 1968 as the Algorail, this medium sized Great Lakes self-unloading bulk carrier was built by Collingwood Shipyards for Algoma Central Corp. She is powered by 4 Fairbanks-Morse 10-38D8-1/8 10cylinder diesel engines producing a total installed 6,664 horsepower, a 600 horsepower bow thruster, and a 1000 horsepower stern thruster. The Algorail has 17 hatches feeding into 4 holds where she can carry 19,975 tons at maximum Seaway draft of 26 feet and is capable of carrying 23,750 tons at her maximum mid-summer draft of 29 feet 2 inches. At time of print, we do not know why the vessel chose to visit Wasaga Beach, but perhaps the crew simply wanted to see our famous "World's Longest Freshwater Beach.”

For one week, Tim Hortons guests were able purchase a freshly baked chocolate chunk Smile Cookie for $1 plus tax at participating restaurants, with 100 per cent of the proceeds being donated by Tim Hortons restaurant owners to support local charities, hospitals and community programs.

If You Can’t Answer ‘Why?’ Then Stop Doing It!

by Andy Stanley Leadership Communicator & Best-Selling Author This is where the emotion of your job is. This is where the emotion of what you’ve been called to do. This is the emotion of why you took the job. This is where you begin to connect the dots. This is where things become inspiring. This is where you find the motivation to get up and do it again, go back to work, have another meeting, make another call, keep things moving forward.

Why are we doing what we’re doing? This is the statement that begins with “because,” “in light of,” “if we don’t.” This question answers the question “What would happen in your community if your company ceased to exist? What would happen in our country, if your industry ceased to exist? What would happen in your community or your town or what would happen with thousands of people part of your company?

What would happen if we didn’t do what we’re here to do now?”

When you hear something like that… I’m thinking you think, “Andy if you’re like a non-profit world, that’s easy, and if you are digging wells that’s easy, if you’re feeding hungry children, that is easy, if you’re building houses for people who need homes, that is easy. We sell things, we manufacture things, we just provide a service. I don’t know if there is anything inspirational, I don’t know if the answer to this question is going to be that helpful.” I want you to know you’re wrong and here’s how I know that, because I know something about your company.

Once upon a time, your company didn’t exist. Once upon a time, your company was an idea. And if we could go back in time and sit in the room with the people who had the idea and began thinking about raising the capital, putting their own money into this idea. If we would have paused in the middle of that conversation to ask this question “Why are you doing this? Why are you risking your own capital? Why are you going to chase down an idea that might not work? Why would you begin a company that is never… trying to answer a question that no one has ever been able to answer. Why are you doing this?”

Chances are, you would hear from the founders of your company a compelling reason why, which tells me this about your company.

Somewhere back in there, somewhere in the midst of all the complexity, is a compelling reason as to why you’re doing what you’re doing. And to cut through the clutter and the complexity that haunts every single organization, that overshadows every single organization, there is a compelling answer to the question why, that harnesses, this is so important, that harnesses the hearts of the people who are leaning in and who have committed to your organization. Why are you doing what are you doing?

If you loose sight of the answer to this question or if you have never answered it, this is where you lose your motivation, and it just becomes a job. But worse than that, if the people who report to you and work for you don’t have a good answer to that question, for them it just becomes a job. And you may view yourself as a leader of a team, but the people who report to you don’t feel like team members, they feel like employees.

New Look, New Date For Wasaga Film Festival The Wasaga Film Festival has a new look and a new date for the film festival. The 5th Annual Wasaga Film Festival Red Carpet Gala Awards is now scheduled for Saturday, April 30th, 2016 at the Wasaga Beach RecPlex.

This is exciting news for the sponsors providing them more direct exposure and promotional value as the new date is much closer to the annual late spring and summer tourism season. One of the festival's key goals is to attract visitors from across the world to attend our film festival to experience our local culture, our hospitality, attractions and our great place to live, work and play. This chosen time of year will also extend the shoulder season and give our visitors a chance to enjoy the natural spring beauty of Wasaga Beach.

A new branding of the festival was undertaken to address future growth of the festival while making it easier for surrounding communities to join the festival feature their films under the Wasaga Film Festival umbrella along with maintaining their local co-branding identities. A new website was designed and launched to support the new branding effort.

Part of the re-branding meant changing the name from Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival to Wasaga Film Festival.

“The main reasons for the changes were to appeal to more neighbouring communities to join us in the effort to provide film and promote film production in our South Georgian Bay Region. We also wanted to eliminate any barriers that would get in the way of the festival evolving to offer full length feature films when the opportunity presents itself,” said Gary Cerantola, Chair of the WFF. “We are working with other parties such as the Midland Cinema Club and the Midland Cultural Centre who want to be part of this film festival. We've been talking to Collingwood and Blue Mountains and we would like to know about any people in Creemore and any other adjoining community that want in. We'll just get bigger and better and have the capabilities to attract more film, stimulate local film production and still maintain local co-branding throughout those South Georgian Bay Communities”.

A new deadline for film submissions is set for February 28, 2016 encouraging more film makers to hone their craft and enter their films/videos in our no fee submission festival.

Last season the 4th Annual WFF welcomed films/videos from Wasaga Beach to B.C. and as far as Australia. WFF hopes to double these entries for the 5th anniversary. The WFF is becoming more prominent and part of the Canadian Film Festival list.

The new logo suitably designed to fit “Without a Box” a film festival first stop clearing center for film producers from across the world wishing to submit films.

Included in the growth is incorporating a non-profit charitable organization not only to support the WFF but capable of providing a home for the film festival and other arts and cultural programs serving the area.

Police in Wasaga Beach are doing what they can to ensure all children in the area are warm this winter. Beginning Monday and running right through November a coat drive is under way.

Coats will be collected at the OPP detachment on River Road West, as well as offices in Minesing and Stayner. The goal is to collect 100 coats and other winter apparel such as mitts, gloves and hats. Donations can be dropped off during regular business hours.

Eva and I just got back from a delightful vacation in Jamaica where son Steven got married to the love of his life, Angela.

What would you say your best “feel good” vacation experience ever was? Does the expression “My Pleasure” mean anything to you?

What sticks in my mind about this vacation was the disposition of each and every one of the staff at the resort we stayed in. I don’t think that it was happenstance, that every time we were served, no matter what the circumstance, we were greeted with a genuine smile and a helping hand. As we thanked any one of those pleasant Jamaicans, on every occasion, we were addressed with a “My Pleasure” response.

This built to last genuine act of courtesy and service goes a long way in my mind. Don’t think for a minute we won’t be telling our friends about this resort and the resort operator. We are already thinking about going back again.

How could it be that this act of service and courtesy could be so prevalent across every aspect of this resort and for that matter right across this small island?

I believe culture is at the root of this delightful experience. It’s the people that make the difference.

It’s the people that generate every positive service and hospitable moment of truth. Jamaica has a genuine fun loving and people caring culture. Add to that its people are very gracious, friendly and genuinely greet you with a smile. Put a little structure and customer service and hospitality training behind these people and you have a success formula that keeps visitors wowed and coming back.

Which brings me to a point about Wasaga Beach. We have a great Beacher culture right here at the World’s longest fresh water beach. People are genuinely friendly and easy going. Just think how a little structure and customer service and hospitality training could help in wowing our visitors and residents for that matter. We could set the benchmark in Ontario for creating the best live work and play experience around.

Population approx. 100,000. A city in the Regional Municipal of Waterloo on the Grand River and Hwys 7 & 86, immediately NW of Kitchener. In 1798, Joseph Brant acting for the Six Nations Indians, sold 94,000 acres (38,070 ha) of land to Richard Beasley, James Wilson, and Jean Baptiste Rosseaux. In 1800 Beasley began to sell land to immigrants of German descent from Pennsylvania. Joseph Sherk and Samuel Betzner were the first permanant settlers. In 1802, new settler Samuel Bricker discovered that the deeds the settlers held were worthless; Beasley had not been sole owner of the land he sold and the tract was heavily mortgaged. In 1804 two of the settlers were sent to Pennsylvania to persuade relatives and old friends to buy the land in Waterloo for $20,000. Under the leadership of John Eby, a joint-stock company known as the German Company was eventually formed. Bricker was appointed agent, and Daniel Erb became his assistant. The $20,000 was wrapped in rags and brought to Waterloo County by wagon. The wagon that carried the money is now in the Waterloo County Museum.

Abraham Erb, who moved from Franklin County, Pennsylvania, in 1806, is credited with founding Waterloo, which is named after Waterloo in Belgium. Erb built a sawmill and then in 1816, a grist mill, which saved area farmers having to haul their wheat to Dundas for milling. The mill drew many colonists to the district, but settlement was stymied for many years by Erb’s refusal to sell any of his land in small lots. In 1844 the Kuntz family established a brewery, which eventually became Carling’s Brewery. In 1807 Joseph Seagram bought a partnership in the local distillery and eventually took over the entire operation. In 1874 Waterloo County’s first Saengerfest, a major choir and band festival, was held. It was so successful that a special arena was built for the annual event. In 1882 the Waterloo Musical Society was organized and the Waterloo Band Festival was started in 1932. Waterloo is a partner with Kitchener in the annual Oktoberfest celebrations, started in 1969.

Lions Donate Van to CNIB

Last Friday, the Simcoe Muskoka CNIB hosted the big reveal, of the 2016 Honda Pilot which was purchased through the donations to the Governor’s project by District A12 Lions, a grant from Lions Clubs International and many friends along the way. This tight postworkout timeframe is often called the “window of opportunity.” Consuming a recovery beverage during this period seems like the most reasonable option, especially since hunger is often blunted after a workout. There are a number of different recovery products on the market, but things like chocolate milk or even a homemade smoothie with fruit and protein powder would work well too. The ideal post-workout ratio is 2-4:1 carbohydrate to protein, and since you won’t have trouble finding products that meet this recommendation, the product you choose really comes down to taste and price. Question: I lift 5 days per week consistently, but my strength gains have flat-lined. How do I continue to get stronger? I don’t think I can lift any more than I am right now.

Answer: I don’t really have much information to go on here, but let’s see if I can provide some insight. First of all, there’s the distinct possibility that you’re working out too much.

Maybe your volume (the combination of sets and reps) is too high—a common problem for those looking to gain strength as quickly as possible. And how long has it been since you’ve taken some time off to allow your body to fully recuperate from the stress of exercise? Some muchneeded rest may do the trick, and amazingly, people often come back even stronger. I also wonder if you’re changing up your workouts enough. Many people get into the habit of using machines or free weights, but then never gravitate toward other forms of exercise. Cables, tubing, bands, kettlebells, medicine balls, and even bodyweight exercises can all increase strength, so you should try to vary up your routine regularly. Lastly, you have to remember that strength doesn’t just increase exponentially on a continual basis. There is a threshold that you’ll reach at some point, and you could be there already. If you feel like you need help with your current program, talk to a certified personal trainer.

Question: The fitness magazines always seem to focus on recovering nutritionally after a workout. This makes sense, so what should I be taking-in to optimally recover?

There is much discussion in Wasaga Beach about the desire to determine a downtown location and create a pedestrian friendly “heart of town” that residents can take ownership of and visitors can enjoy a unique Wasaga Beach experience.

For many newcomers to Wasaga Beach, the fact that we once had a vibrant and functional downtown may come as a surprise, as it’s been many years since we have had the Main Street shopping, dining and entertainment oppourtuntiy in our town.

Our “Historic Main Street” (between the Main Street Bridge and Beach Drive) was once the main commercial area of our Main Street. Although seasonal, this busy downtown was the place for locals and visitors to shop, meet friends and neighbours, dine and be entertained. Everything required could be found on this busy section of Main Street and it was also the “gateway” to our large indoor arcade, outdoor midway, Playland Park and of course the busy and active Main Beach that also had a great selection of retail shops and entertainment venues.

This section of Main Street was converted to a Pedestrian Mall in 1972 and vehicular traffic was diverted to the current route, using Spruce Street to circle around to Beach Drive. On a cold and windy late November evening in 2007, fire swept through Historic Main Street and leveled over 70% of the structures on both sides of the street. Although by the following spring, the area was cleared and interlocking bricks had replaced the pavement, this section of Main Street (referred to as The Mall) has remained as a wide open, barren walkway to the beach.
