Identifying a Downtown Location for Wasaga Beach

Building the Social, Cultural & Economic Heart for our Town by Bill Frieday

It was a “standing room only” crowd Thursday evening in the Oakview Room at the RecPlex to listen to a presentation by Andrew McNeill, Director of Economic Development and Tourism. The presentation highlighted relevant information regarding downtowns in communities and potential locations for a downtown in Wasaga Beach. Following the presentation, questions from those in attendance were solicited and about a dozen or so people approached the microphone to give their thoughts. Most were very positive and all congratulated McNeill for the presentation and also for his enthusiasm. Four potential Downtown Sites were mentioned: Main Street, Old Mosley Street (around the Post Office area), Riverbend Plaza Area and 45th Street & Mosley. Attendees were asked to signify their preference by attaching coloured stickers to one of the four site drawings hanging on the wall. The Main Street drawing was the clear choice by an overwhelming majority. Andrew McNeill hopes to present his report to Council before year end.

Point of View We Get Letters! Well it has been one year since the good people of Wasaga Beach took to the polling stations to let their wishes be known. The first thought that came to mind, was the overwhelming vote and desire for "change". We elected a new Mayor, who campaigned on change. We elected many new faces to town council. Together If you like peanut butter, you are going to love this there was a collective promise to do business differently. easy to make, no bake cheesecake. Much has been said about the main beach property purchases. I am a supporter and I am confident that in the not too distant future, we will look back and see it for the shrewd and significant business decision it is. Will there be bumps along the way, of course there will be, but we the people will have control and the final word going forward. Our new council also understands the long term importance of widen our commercial tax base, which is currently low by most standards. The focus on tourism and the development of a downtown core with new commercial growth is important in keeping our residential tax base in check. The newly created position of 'Director of Economic Development and Tourism', was a critically important move. The appointment of Andrew McNeil was an even smarter decision. He is enthusiastic, well respected, and the Town of Wasaga Beach is fortunate to have him in our employ. We had a great summer of events, mother nature cooperated in the second half, and plans in the works for 2016 look very exciting with a new pedestrian mall and expanded events calendar. The high level of energy and enthusiasm in our business community is refreshing. Tourism in 2015 was 48% higher than the previous year, and our best overall in the past seven years. We are on the right track.

In the words of Charles Darwin, it is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but rather the one most responsive to change. Our new leadership has shown its ability to adapt and embrace change, for that I give them a B+ grading, in what has been a wildly terrific first year. There has been plenty of progress made in laying a strong and sustainable foundation for our future. I'm excited at the possibilities as our new Mayor and Council continue to deliver on their promises. The Town of Wasaga Beach is coming back, and a great deal of credit should be directed toward our new Mayor, and a new Council that is willing to think outside the box. There is no substitute for strong leadership. Glen Bailey Wasaga Beach

These little gems are delicious, easy to make and will compliment your Christmas sweet tray. They can also be suitable for Vegans if using vegan friendly chocolate. Easy to make Strawberry-Coconut Truffles 1 cup coconut butter 1 heaping cup sliced strawberries zest from 1 lime 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 1 tbsp agave syrup or sugar 6 oz chocolate 1 tsp coconut oil In a food processor, process the coconut butter strawberries, lime zest, vanilla, and agave or sugar until blended. With a small cookie scoop, scoop the strawberry filling onto a silicone mat-lined baking sheet and stick in the freezer for an hour. When ready to finish, place the chocolate and coconut oil in a small bowl and heat in the microwave in 30 second increments, stirring well after each trip to the microwave. It should take no more than a minute and a half. Dip the frozen strawberry-coconut balls into the chocolate and, using a fork, remove them, allowing the excess chocolate to drip off. Place back on the baking sheet to set. They will set up at room temperature, but faster in the fridge or freezer.

Barrier Cables Installed on Eastdale Drive

By Joe Bickerstaff

In 2013, concerned residents contacted the Allenwood Beach Ratepayers Association and pointed out the need for a roadside barrier due to the extreme depth of the culvert on the north side of Eastdale Drive. This culvert diverts several streams and creeks in the area and is often deep with fast flowing water. Now Wasaga Beach Councillor, Ron Ego was a member of the Ratepayers Association and agreed to take the concern to the Town Council of the day. After a tour of the area, it was agreed the town should move forward with approval for the installation of a roadside barrier. Crews were on Eastdale Drive this week installing the Barrier Cables and Councillor Ron Ego met with some of the installers. The new barrier will extend along most of the north side of Eastdale Drive and is expected to be completed by November 20. Councillor Ego, on behalf of all members of the Allenwood Beach Ratepayers Association thank all involved for protecting motorists on this stretch of Eastdale Drive in Wasaga Beach.

Want to Learn More on the Law of Attraction? Two local authors from Simcoe County, Dennis Fraser of Wasaga Beach and James Poulin from Barrie wrote their first book titled “Frustrated, Frazzled and Ready to Throw Up”. This is actually a grandfather and grandson team who will be hosting a book launch which refers to the “Law of Attraction” on November 26th from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Station on the Green in Creemore. Fraser born and raised in Northern Ontario has been living the “Law of Attraction” for almost 60years as well as teaching it for the most part. Fraser encountered the LOA around 5-6 years through a neighbour/friend who mentored him on how the Universe works. He discovered his friend was a member of a secret society. “He taught much more. All through my training I called the content the Spiritual Way not the Law of Attraction. It wasn't until I ready Rhonda Byrne's book The Secret that I realized the material I was living was called the “Law of Attraction” by the rest of the world,” expressed Fraser. Fraser moved to Wasaga Beach 8-years ago to be close to his two children who live in the Barrie area. Four years ago, he took on his 20-year-old grandson, James as apprentice who dropped out of college and starting teaching him how to use the LOA. “By that time he was a lost soul getting in with the wrong crowd. It was not good,” said Fraser. Today, James owns a duplex and is planning to buy two more, has a patent pending on a brand new product for the painting industry and also cohosts the daily podcast show “The Mining the Miracle Show”. “Not bad for someone with only a high school degree,” said Fraser. According to Fraser, the LOA has been around for over 4,000 years and utilized by royalty, upper class, nobility and the secret societies. “These particular groups understood how the Universe operated and simply followed the rules as they are laid out.” In his book, he talks about the 4 major time rules: 1) The 5-second Miracle; 2) 48-hour Rule; 3) 30-day Rule and 4) 68-second Rule. “My book is based on explaining each of these in great detail and my course teaches you how to use them to your advantage in everyday life.” Since most people know very little about the “Law of Attraction” this is a golden opportunity to come out and hear how this incredible tool can be used to make some pretty dramatic changes in your life. Fraser wants the audience to walk away that we weren't meant to be poor or sick etc. but somewhere we brought all these negatives into our lives by the way we think. “Changing the way we think is not as hard as it is made out to be. It is quite simple but it hinges upon how much you want to change,” said Fraser. For registration and more information please contact: dennis@miningthemiracles.com. Beach Corner broadcast weekly Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Beach Corner article sponsored by Exchanging Vows Bridal Boutique.

Police in Wasaga Beach are doing what they can to ensure all children in the area are warm this winter. Beginning Monday and running right through November a coat drive is under way. Coats will be collected at the OPP detachment on River Road West, as well as offices in Minesing and Stayner. The goal is to collect 100 coats and other winter apparel such as mitts, gloves and hats. Donations can be dropped off during regular business hours.

Population approx. 225,000. In the Regional Municipal of Waterloo on the Grand River and Hwys. 7, 8, & 86, just North of Hwy. 401, adjacent to the City of Waterloo, 18 km. SouthWest of Guelph. Kitchener and Waterloo could be one city but for their different names, and they are often referred to as “K-W.” Early settlers, in the late 1790s, called the place Sand Hills because of the sand dunes at the site and later, Mount Pleasant. A few years after Mennonite Benjamin Eby settled in 1807, the community was renamed Ebytown. Eby became Canada’s first Mennonite bishop, and for 40 years he was minister of Canada’s first Mennonite church. By 1830 immigrants were coming from Germany, and Ebytown was renamed Berlin in 1841 in honour of their homeland. In 1916, when the First World War was being fought ad antiGerman sentiment ran high in Canada, the named was changed to Kitchener after Lord Kitchener of Khartoum, a British war hero who drowned at sea that year. Joseph Schneider is considered by many to have been the founder of Kitchener. He arrived in 1807 and started a meat-packing plant which continued until recently. The second house he built at Kitchener, in 1820, is the city’s oldest building and is now a museum. William Lyon Mackenzie King (1874-1950) was born in Kitchener and began a public service career as a specialist in labour relations. He was Prime Minister of Canada from 1921 to 1926, 1926 to 1930, and 1935 to 1948. King spent his teenage years in a 10-room house in Kitchener called Woodside, which is now a museum in Woodside National Historic Park maintained by Parks Canada.

Fit and Healthy in The Beach

Expert answers to your health and wellness questions by Jessica Brown Question: I’ve started incorporating stability balls in my workouts. How do I know what colour and size I should be using?

single glass, water bottle, or a pitcher. Add ingredients to your water and let sit for a couple of hours and you’ll have a delicious, healthy alternative to enhanced bottled waters, energy drinks and juices. Popular ingredients include lemon, lime, strawberries, cucumber, mint, basil and ginger.

Answer: Stability balls, also known as Swiss balls or physioballs, are a great piece of equipment to help improve core muscle strength and endurance. The colour of the ball is not important, but making sure you have the correct size is for many exercises. Stability balls range from 45-85 cm and your height will determine the most appropriate size for seated or lying exercises. If the stability ball is not clearly marked, choose a ball size that allows you to sit with erect posture and your hips and knees at 90 degrees. Here are common inflation and height suggestions for standard stability balls. · 45 cm = 4’7”-5’0” · 55 cm = 5’1”-5’6” · 65 cm = 5’7”-6’1” · 75 cm = 6’2-6’8” · 85 cm = 6’9 and over Question: I keep hearing about “infused waters”. How are these different than flavored waters like Vitamin Water, energy drinks or juices? Answer: If you get bored with plain water, infused waters could be a great option to increase flavor without the added sugars found in many of the enhanced flavored waters may have. This girl is in excellent shape and he does his best, but no such luck. So for the next four days, the same routine happens with him gradually getting in better and better shape. Much to his delight on the fifth day when he weighs himself, he discovers that he has lost another 20 lbs. as promised. He decides to go for broke and calls the company to order the 7-day/50 pound program. “Are you sure?” asks the representative on the phone. “This is our most rigorous program.” “Absolutely,” he replies, “I haven’t felt this good in years.” The next day there’s a knock at the door; and when he opens it he finds a huge muscular guy standing there wearing nothing but pink running shoes and a sign around his neck that reads, “If I catch you, you’re mine.” He lost 63 lbs. pounds that week.
