The 12 Days of Christmas a Success at Birchview Dunes As a member of the Parent Council of Birchview Dunes Elementary School, Victoria DiBase suggested a creative and fun way of engaging the students in a special Christmas Food Drive. After hearing of what food items are in need for the Wasaga Beach Ministerial Food Bank this time of year, a 12 Day list was created with a different food item for each of the 12 days. With the support of Principal Rob Perry and Vice-Principal Mark McCain, Victoria headed up the initiative showing great team spirit by the Grade 7 & 8 students.

Victoria, along with other members of the Parent Council and students delivered just over 2,700 food items collected to the Wasaga Beach Ministerial Food Bank this week, to help stock the shelves for the busy Christmas Season.

Praline Crusted Cheesecake

Whole Roasted Cauliflower

1 1/2 cups finely crushed shortbread cookies This whole roasted cauliflower recipe is easy to make and can easily 1/2 cup Candied Pecans, finely crushed be served as the center of the plate, or as a simple side dish. The 2 tablespoons butter, melted cooking time is long but the results are very satisfying. Try it over the 3 8 ounce package cream cheese, softened holiday season as a vegetarian option for your guests.

1 8 ounce tub mascarpone cheese 1 cup sugar 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/4 cup whipping cream 3 eggs, lightly beaten 1 egg yolk, lightly beaten 1 teaspoon finely shredded lemon peel Candied Pecans, broken into pieces 1 1/2 cups pecan pieces 1/2 cup sugar 2 tablespoons butter 1/2 teaspoon vanilla For crust, in a medium bowl, stir together crushed cookies and finely crushed Candied Pecans. Drizzle the melted butter over the cookie mixture. Toss until mixed well. Press the cookie mixture onto the bottom and about 1-1/2 inches up the sides of a 9-inch springform pan. Bake in a 350 degree F oven for 7 1 whole cauliflower, outer leaves removed minutes.

2 tsp cumin In a large mixing bowl beat the cream cheese and pinch of salt mascarpone cheese, sugar, flour, and vanilla with an 1 tbsp vegetable oil electric mixer on medium speed till combined. Beat 1 tbsp pine nuts in 1/4 cup cream until smooth. Stir in eggs, yolk, and 2 tbsp greek yogurt lemon peel.

1 tbsp tahini Pour filling into crust-lined pan. Place pan in a 2 tsp fresh lemon juice shallow baking pan. Bake in the 350 degree F oven 1 tbsp currants about 50 minutes or until a 2-1/2-inch area around 1 tbsp chopped parsley' the outside edge appears set when gently shaken.

Makes about 2-1/2 cups.

Beachfront Gaming is in The Cards

At council's December 15th Committee of the Whole meeting, councillors accepted a recommendation to add the Beach One and Beach Two as a potential site for a gaming facility to the list of four properties already identified. It was pointed out that this additional location may appeal to some of the potential developer/operators and while the 4 previous sites would appeal the "drive to... and leave" visitors, a beach front gaming component, as part of a true resort facility (perhaps with hotel, banquet facilities, shopping and family fun activities) would be a "Stay and Play" addition to our community. If the beach front was chosen by any interested and approved developer/operator, the facility, as suggested by Andrew McNeill, would be about 35,000 square feet, or about the size of The Dardanella.

It is the hope that if this was to happen at our World Famous Beach Front, it would add to the great family friendly attractions planned by our forward thinking Mayor and members of Town Council, as we look forward to being recognized as a truly great beach front resort once again.

Christmas Ice Show presents 'Twas the Night Before Christmas Figure skating is something close to my heart having skated professionally with an American Ice Show I have fond memories of my skating years. Having said that, I am delighted to hear that SK8 Georgian Bay Skaters are presenting “Christmas On Ice” Tuesday, December 22nd from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Collingwood Eddie Bush Memorial Arena with special guest skaters, Silver medalists from the 2015 Junior Canadian National Championships, Lauren Collins and Shane Firus and returning favourite Junior Ice Dancers, Hannah Whitley and Elliott Graham who finished fifth at their Junior National debut at the 2015 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships.

Jan Hulme, owner of SK8 Georgian Bay and coach, is spearheading this event. Jan does most of the work behind the scenes by selecting the costumes, finding rental places and putting the music together.

“You can expect some story line from 'Twas the Night Before Christmas where the narrator tells the story followed by 3-4 ice skating numbers back to back and returning to the commentary with more numbers to follow,” said Hulme.

Majority of the skaters are between the ages of 3 to 17 years old and are from Wasaga Beach, Stayner, Creemore, Collingwood, Elmvale with two skaters from Orillia and Port Elgin. These skaters have performed in Carnival previously and learned their ice routines in just four weeks. “Most of the skaters are coached locally and have done carnivals in the past and are familiar with SK8 Georgian Bay. They are learning one number each as opposed to practicing multiple ice numbers,” said Hulme.

At 5 years-old Jan started skating and garnered over 30-years of experience. She taught Lauren Collins at the tender age of three and Hanna Whitley when she first started skating. She is Level 2 Certified, Level 2 Synchronized, Level 1 Special Needs and Level 3 Technical and Theory. “Certification Levels goes up to five. Nearly all coaches in Georgian Bay are Level 2 and 3,” explained Hulme. Her vision “to skate and be free with a dream” created her own reality by opening her skating school, SK8 Georgian Bay. SK8 Georgian Bay offers boys and girls of all ages, figure skating, power skating, hockey and figure skating camps in Collingwood and Wasaga Beach.

Working with qualified coaches, the school provides skaters the opportunity to practice skating techniques needed to gain confidence in hockey or figure skating. The programs run from spring to fall with summer skating camps/or day camps at Wasaga Star Arena.

Tickets for the Christmas Ice Show can be purchased in advance at Eventbrite and at Stayner Home Hardware, Stayner Town and Country, Knit 'N Kaboudle in Stayner, Ed Christies Collingwood, Gabriele Photography Collingwood and at the door.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and children (ages 3 to 10), free for kids 3 years-old and younger.

On the December 15th, Town Council decided on one of the 4 suggested locations for a Downtown Wasaga Beach. The area to be designated as Downtown incorporates Main Street and The Main Beach area as well as the surrounding areas. It had been suggested that as this area historically was once the main area of commerce and entertainment in Wasaga Beach, that history should be recognized as we move forward in once again providing a “heart” for the town with a downtown designation. Now that a location had been determined, council has asked The Director of Economic Development and Tourism, Andrew McNeill to move forward with a draft Official Plan Schedule, Terms of Reference to undertake the development of a Downtown Master Plan among other things. A public meeting will be organized to gain input on the development ideas.

We also learned that there has been much interest in the exciting plans for the Main Street Market initiative that will bring life back to Historic Main Street and family friendly fun back to our Main Beach area for next summer. There have been very positive discussions between The Town and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry regarding the delegation of authority to manage Beach Areas One and Two to The Town, with an “Agreement in Principle” for this to take place by spring of 2016. This would give management, maintenance and use of the beach between 6th Street and Spruce back to The Town of Wasaga Beach. Details will be discussed in the New Year.

Like most people, we find it hard to believe that Christmas is once again very close, but it must be true because traffic in Wasaga Beach has really picked up on Mosley Street and River Road West to levels that sometimes can rival our summer traffic.

Christmas always takes me back to the best of my childhood memories when for me, this was a time for family and sharing and enjoying some of the simplest things in life. Weeks before Christmas, my mother would start her marathon baking undertakings making all my favourites; short bread thimble cookies, peanut butter cookies, three big Christmas cake squares, cheesecake and baked squares. I remember my father made the forms for baking these Christmas cakes and my mother dedicated the smaller Christmas cake solely for guess who? Christmas fruit cake is my favourite and to this day, when I eat Christmas cake I think of mom and how she would make things so special for each and everyone of us. And guess what? I have never had a piece of Christmas cake to this day that could rival mom’s special Christmas cake recipe. Christmas was a time when the house was filled with aunts, uncles and cousins literally for weeks through the Christmas and New Year season.

My wife Eva and I, count ourselves so fortunate to be living at the Beach and in this country where we are still afforded the luxury of being able to create good memories. This year will be the year we spend Christmas with all of our kids and grandkids. We are looking forward to a time to enjoy each other and celebrate our family.

It’s also at a time of reflection through the holiday season that we realize that we are so blessed and that all of our life challenges can be taken into perspective. We live in a country that is not torn apart by conflict and disease. We have choices that we can make for ourselves. For the most part, our society is a tolerant one which is supportive of our less fortunate residents. We have caring community leaders in our town. We have readily available fresh water, fresh food and shelter. We can walk down our streets and also enjoy nature along our paths and our beaches without fear for our safety.

During the Christmas season is also a great time to look back over the last 12 months and look back to not only where the time went, but what we have done that was meaningful and reflect on what we have accomplished. We also look towards the next year and contemplate how we can set goals that will make positive contributions to our circle of life accomplishments going forward.

So the next time you feel stressed and life is not treating you kindly, take a deep breath and give thanks. Think about how blessed we really are in this part of the world. Think about what little things we can do for people less fortunate than we are that could have a positive impact on their lives and well being. It’s as easy as knowing that givers gain and that our world turns out to be a better place to live in when we all take care of each other.

Approx. Pop. 16,000. In District Municipality of Muskoka, on the Muskoka River and Hwys. 11 & 118 and County Road 14, 55 km. North of Orillia.

The townsite was discovered by John Bell in 1861. He named it North Mills. In 1864 Bracebridge was named by the postmaster general of Canada after the book, Bracebridge Hall, by Washington Irving. Nearby Gravenhurst named after a place mentioned in the same book.

One of Ontario’s few remaining three-story octagonal houses was built in 1882 for mill owner Henry James Bird. It is now the home of the Bracebridge Museum. Since 1955, Santa’s Village, an amusement park 6 km. south of town, has delighted youngsers of all ages.

This unique 60-acre attraction nestles in a bend of the Muskoka River. Visitors may tour the village by miniature train or cruise the Muskoka River on Santa’s Summer Sleigh Jet Boat. Santa’s Village is like Christmas in the summer! Features include Santa Claus and his elves at work, Santa’s Roller Coaster Sleigh ride, Santa’s deer, the Red Baron biplane ride, ferris wheel, swan paddle boats, Jumpin’ Star mini-dropper, ATV peddle bikes, Elves Island Play Village, live amphitheatre shows with clowns, magicians and roving entertainers, games of skill, gifts and great food.

Santa’s Village was established in 1955 as a tourist destination by a group of local citizens when the Highway 11 was built and bypassed Bracebridge. These citizens felt that perhaps Santa would like a summer home in the most beautiful cottage area in Ontario which also happened to be conveniently located half way between the equator and the North Pole, on the 45th parallel.

Santa liked the idea so much that he had his elves build, not just a cottage, but a whole village to which he could invite everyone to come and experience the joy of Christmas all summer long.

Under Santa’s direction, the elves put in rides, games and an amphitheatre and prepared delicious food to please his guests. All of this is set in an enchanting natural woodland and watercourse environment.

Santa is here every day during the summer to greet his guests at Santa square.

Santa’s Village is geographically located half way between the North Pole and the Equator. This is an i m a g i n a r y geographical line of latitude. Latitude is an angular distance, measured in Degrees, north or south of the equator.

The equator is an imaginary circle around the earth, equally distant at all points from the North and South Pole. The North Pole is the northern end of the Earth’s axis.

Santa’s Village shares the 45th parallel with other places around the world such as: Cornwall, Ontario; Minneapolis & St. Paul, Minnesota; Bordeaux, France; Torin, Italy; Bucurest, Romania and Krasnodar, Russia.

by Jessica Brown Question: What’s the best way to wake up my metabolism for weight loss? Eat first thing in the morning before my cardio workout or skip breakfast and wait longer to extend the fasting period?

Answer: Exercising in the “fasted state” has been promoted as a way to possibly burn more calories from fat than from carbohydrates. One theory suggests, because the body’s resting metabolism continues to work overnight while the body sleeps, lower levels of carbohydrates will be available for fuel before breakfast, resulting in the body having to use fat as fuel. But, there are an equal number of studies that suggest the opposite.

Therefore, we suggest that if fat loss is your goal, it’s more important to consider additional ways to be more active throughout the day rather than limiting your caloric intake prior to a morning workout. Moving more during the day and smart nutrition choices will play a more significant role for long-term fat loss. Fueling for early morning workouts will depend greatly on what works for you. If you choose to eat breakfast, a low glycemic food 30 minutes prior to exercise can provide enough energy to fuel your workout without raising insulin levels, which is known to metabolize and store fat. If you simply like to exercise on an empty stomach, properly fueling the body afterwards is really important, as you’ll want to give the body the correct amount of nutrients to provide lasting energy for the rest of the morning.

Question: Are there benefits to using the preprogrammed workouts that are available on the various cardio machines?

Answer: Pre-programmed workouts can provide you with new ideas on how to use the cardio machines and help you avoid getting into a cardio rut. Programs are available on most treadmills, stationary bikes, and elliptical trainers. The programs automatically manipulate

variables such as time, incline, resistance, and speed to challenge your heart in a variety of ways. Rolling hills, speed work, intervals and automatic resistance changes can provide new challenges and motivation to complete a workout without you having to decide what to do next.

Variety in your cardio regimen can help you break through plateaus, avoid boredom and get more from your time at the gym.

Approximately 50 members of the Wasaga Beach Women’s Business Association came together to celebrate the holidays with laughter, fun and a delicious turkey dinner. Santa was the special guest of honor for dinner, pictures and dancing. Over 100 items were donated by the members to our local food bank. WBWBA has their annual Early Bird Membership drive on now till Dec 31st, where joining members can save $15.
