1944 Mosley Street, Wasaga Beach, ON
With many local business people in attendance at the January 19th Committee of the Whole meeting at Town Hall, the committee made up of all members of council voted to move forward on some very exciting plans to bring some great things to our Historic Main Street and our World Famous Beachfront for the Summer of 2016. The Main Street Market plan will bring unique and colourful kiosks to the once busy Main Street area at the Main Beach (known to many as the Pedestrian Mall) allowing for local businesses to be a part of the revitalization of this important part of town. Entertainers and shows will be a part of the fun Artist conceptual rendering of what Beach Drive and will certainly provide a draw for locals as they rediscover Archway or Entrance could be like with Main the Main Beach area. Plans also include a unique Beer Garden Street Market. facility in The Main Street Market that will be rented and operated by the owners of our very own local beer company, The Wasaga Beach Brewing Company. The open air, tropical feel planned for this beer garden will be a perfect place for residents to enjoy a truly local cold one on one of the few fully accessible patios in the Main Beach area. The committee also agreed to move forward with the discussions being held with The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) regarding the town taking back control of the Main Beach Areas One and Two (the actual beach area from Spruce Street to approximately 6th Street). Although the plan is contingent on the agreement being completed, talks between the MNRF and The Town are very positive and a preliminary template has been unofficially agreed to by both parties. With the beautiful stretch of sand in front of the busy Artist conceptual rendering of what Historic Main new activities on Main Street and Beach Drive in the control of Street could look like next summer. The Town, there are plans for recreational activities, entertainers, public art displays and lounge and umbrella rentals on the beach. Lifeguards are also something that could be returned to this part of the beach. During the discussion, Councillor Bill Stockwell commented “anything that gets the beach back in the hands of the municipality rather than the MNRF would be a step forward. In order to ensure that the Main Beach activities and the entertainment and events planned for the Main Street Market are well organized, professional and unique, the town will be hiring a Special Events Coordinator who will be responsible for this new venue, sure to please residents and tourists alike. Also discussed at this meeting was the progress being made in the renting of town owned commercial properties at the Main Beach area. There is a lot of new interest and several new lease agreements in the works for these properties and we Creative Designers Garry and Ryan Sawatzky join look forward to a vibrant and busy Main Beach for next Andrew McNeill, Director of Economic summer! Most Memorable Events and Guests on Beach Corner As Beach Corner is gearing up for its fourth season on beachboosterradio.com, it has been a busy year with interviews from local to international legendary artists. I would like to share some of the most memorable events and guests over the year. In January it all started with 2nd Annual Sledfest where I captured interviews with Joe Bickerstaff and some local residents and tourist in town who were amazed by the races, followed by the 4th Annual Wasaga Film Festival Red Carpet Gala Awards on January 23rd where Mary Ann Watts received her second win for the WFF Regional Music Video Platinum Award for “Burn” by TooNice. This was one of the best gala awards with out of town presenters Dale Goldhawk from Goldhawk Fights Back on Zoomer Radio in Toronto who kept the audience entertained, John Van Driel from The New Classical 96.3 FM in Toronto, Rosemarie O'Brien from Collingwood Elvis Festival, KC Colby from CTV News Barrie, Mel Pockaj from Georgian Bay Today, Rogers TV and Khaleel Ghandi from Community Arts Celebration. The Wasaga Film Festival has since rebranded from WBSFF to WFF. The 5th Annual Wasaga Film Festival Red Carpet Gala Awards is now scheduled for Saturday, April 30th, 2016 at the Wasaga Beach RecPlex.“The main reasons for the changes were to appeal to more neighbouring communities to join us in the effort to provide film and promote film production in our South Georgian Bay region, “ said Gary Cerantola, Chair of the WFF. Comedian Brent Butt from Corner Gas graced beachBOOSTER radio. Did you know he has yet to visit Wasaga Beach? Marilyn Lightstone was a guest at the Chamber's Speaker's Night and spoke about the “Power of the Voice”. She provided several exercises on how to warm up our vocal chords and the importance of the sound of our voice. The boys from High 75 (aka Fire and Sound), Mickey and Eddy dropped by with their new album “All Night” and introduced the band's new name. Singer, songwriter and guitarist, Lyric Dubee who personalized his own style of music known as “Revolution Rock” captured our attention with his 4th album release and later launched a double-CD and new music video at the Art Centre in Barrie in September. Legendary photographer and manager, Robert Knight best known for his guitar legend archive having worked with such artists as Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Led Zepplin, Stevie Ray Vaughan to name a few was part of the celebration. Lyric went on to tour Asia mid-November where he performed in Japan and China. And finally, one of the most interesting guests was Skip Taylor, manager for Canned Heat who showcased their 50th Anniversary Tour at the 5th Annual Blues Festival in July. Skip at one time signed Sony and Cher and the Rolling Stones. It was a true honour having him on the show. I'm looking forward to bringing you new artists in 2016 wishing you and your family a New Year! Dianna Chycki is host of Beach Corner and Co-chair of the Wasaga Film Festival. New Year’s resolutions can be a rollercoaster of exuberance from well placed intentions and emotional let downs. There are the highs when you set them, imagining with excitement the new person you are going to be and the new life you’re going to be leading. Quite often you are left with the lows of frustration and procrastination when things don’t go exactly to plan. I have always been intrigued with individuals who have held their ground and made good on their resolutions. I thought this year I would get serious in terms of finding better ways to follow through on my own resolutions. I read a book review over the holidays written by Charles Duhigg called “The Power of Habit”. About 40% of the actions people perform each day aren’t actual decisions but habits. This struck me as a game changing piece of information that has given me a whole new strategy for dealing with my new year’s resolutions. The key to exercising regularly, losing weight, raising exceptional children, becoming more productive, building your business, thriving on a project, and achieving success is understanding how habits work. First, there is a cue, a trigger that tells your brain to go into automatic mode and which habit to use. Second there is the routine, which can be physical or mental or emotional. Third, there is a reward, which helps your brain figure out if this particular loop is worth remembering for the future. If we get to know what the cue is we can replace the bad habit with a good habit and claim the reward. In most cases the reward translates into satisfying a craving. I have a sweet tooth; ask my wife Eva she’ll tell you this big time. The cue could be watching a TV commercial showing a customer eating a delicious donut. My typical routine is to get off the couch and mosey upstairs to the fridge for something sweet. The new routine I adopted is to chose to eat an apple instead of a baked good. An apple has enough natural sugar to satisfy my craving yet not add a gazillion calories to my diet. This problem solved. Here’s a few guidelines that will contribute to your success as you consider your resolutions for 2016: 1. Clearly know what you want to achieve. Setting a vague goal is a recipe for failure. 2. Picture it. Visualize doing it. Place a picture of the end result on your fridge or on your bathroom mirror. 3. Write the goal down on a piece of paper. If you write it, you own it. 4. Think hard and long about why you are taking on this goal. If its done for the right reasons you can continually remind yourself about the long term benefits, you will reap instead of getting that short term gratification hit of dopamine from your brain when you follow through on a bad habit routine. 5. Identify the possible obstacles related to achieving the resolution results you want so you can prepare yourself for the up and coming challenges. 6. Break down your resolution into small doable actions so you can build success into the process while also celebrating the quick wins on the way to glory. 7. Tell your “best trusted other person” what you are setting out to achieve to create a sense of commitment associated with your resolution. 8. Manage your self talk. Lean how to adopt positive assertions that you can repeat to yourself again and again. “I can do this”, “I can do this”, “I will do this”. 9. Measure your progress. What gets measured gets done. 10. If you take on an “Other People Centred” resolution chances are you will benefit another person, your community and definitely make yourself happy because “Givers Gain”. Approx. Pop. 12,000. In South Dumfries Township, Brant County, at the confluence of the Grand and Nith Rivers, Hwys, 2, 5 & 24A, 29 km East of Woodstock. The first settler was William Holme, who arrived in 1821 and built a mill in which he ground plaster to sell as fertilizer to local farmers. The settlement then was called The Folks of the Grand River. In 1828, Vermont native Hiram Capron arrived, laid out a townsite and in 1832 built the first grist mill. Shortly after building the mill, Capron named the settlement Paris for the large Plaster-of-Paris beds that he and partners bought in 1842 and developed into a profitable enterprise. His leadership in the community earned him the nickname “King.” Capron built a mansion, later owned by textile magnate John Penman and called Penmarvian, which remains a local landmark. Penman left the house to Presbyterian Church of Canada for use as a home by retired ministers. A plaque on a main street store commemorates the world’s first long distance telephone call. Alexander Graham Bell received the call from nearby Brantford on Aug. 10, 1876. Nine cobblestone buildings in town and four in adjacent South Dumfries Township were erected by Levi Boughton between 1825 and 1865. Cobblestones six to nine inches long set in horizontal rows in a bed of mortar

by Jessica Brown Question: Well, it’s that time of year again. Any advice on sticking to my New Year’s resolutions in 2016? Answer: To be honest with you, I don’t really like the whole resolution approach at all. Wasn’t it Einstein that said doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is a sure sign of insanity? If that’s true, I find it ironic that people set similar goals year after year, and yet fail to reach those goals year after year. It’s clear you want to make some changes—that what resolutions are all about—but it sounds like it’s your mindset that needs to change. You have to determine how committed you are to living a lifestyle of health. After all, it takes dedication and hard work to exercise consistently, make healthy food choices most of the time, and get adequate sleep each night. And these are just some of the behaviors that define wellness. But here’s the thing—when you decide that revamping your lifestyle is more important than reaching some short-term goal for 2016, New Year’s resolutions will become a thing of the past! Question: How do I determine how much weight I should be lifting? Answer: Finding the correct weight for any exercise can take a bit of trial and error. The general rule of thumb is to choose a weight that is challenging, but a weight that allows you to lift with good form for the suggested number of reps. Your exercise goal will also help determine how much weight you should be lifting. If you wish to build strength and gain mass, choose a heavy load that you can lift for 8 reps or fewer. Moderate weight that you can lift for 8-12 repetitions is the most common recommendation for building strength and increasing lean muscle mass. To help you build endurance, choose lighter weights where you can perform 15 or more reps
Keep up the great work!

Snowmobile Capital Although the snow seemed late in coming this year, January is providing us with the snow we need as we look forward to a winter where we can welcome visitors to Wasaga Beach with all that our town can offer from hospitality at our local restaurants, motels and gas stations to our network of groomed trails and of course our World Famous beach! Wasaga Beach has a long history of welcoming Snowmobilers and at one time was known as The Snowmobile Capital of Ontario. Most major manufacturers of snowmobiles of the day, had dealers and service facilities here including, Yamaha, Ski-doo, Kawasaki, Chaparral, Rupp, Arctic Cat and John Deere. The Wasaga Snowmobile Club has always provided us with some of the best groomed trails in the country and these trails can serve as a conduit to bring snowmobiles to Wasaga Beach from communities far and wide. Good highways and roads mean that snowmobiles can be trailered here and once unloaded in The Beach can serve as the only means of transportation required while staying here as we have always been a snowmobile friendly town. At one time, the river froze solid every winter and was used for holding many winter events including our Winter Jamboree and the Whipper Billy Watson Snowarma. The river running through town also provided a main artery for snowmobile travel in town and at one time was lined with great hotels with live entertainment and dining rooms all welcoming sledders. Exciting Radar Runs and races were organized in town and kept our winter visitors happy. Wasaga Beach welcomes snowmobilers to our town as perhaps once again we will be recognized as “The Snowmobile Capital of Ontario”! Joe Bickerstaff
