Leadership Styles for Dealing with Difficult People Could you improve your listening? By Rachel Sheehan. Managing Director at Slalom Consulting in Atlanta, Georgia.

So we talked a little bit about difficult people or challenging situations. There’s another scenario that we often encounter where trying to walk in from a place of empathy, where you’re truly putting yourself in the other person’s position and understanding their feelings and their beliefs more so than their behaviors. So understanding people’s feelings is a better indicator in terms of why there might be challenges because we can dive into beliefs that drive behaviors. And once we really understand the beliefs that are occurring, then you actually can start to change behavior as a result. So being in that empathetic stance, I’m really looking to dive into, again, feeling something that you do not oftentimes hear in workplace conversations. “I hear that you’re feeling frustrated,” or, “I hear that you might be feeling a little scared or a little intimidated by this challenge. Tell me more about that.” As I approach these discussions, I try to find a very empathetic and passionate position for myself as well as for the people who I’m engaged with. So as we start to understand the passions of those who are involved, I think it helps for me to be vulnerable and to be very empathetic and to share things about myself, my feelings so that people are able to open up and also be vulnerable along with me. So it’s not me expecting them to be vulnerable and I’m happy to set the example and start there so that we both come from a place of vulnerability and openness. I find taking that first step is usually a great way for helping people to step into a more open and a more sharing situation and, again, we like to talk about feelings because I think once you start to speak about feelings versus oftentimes you’ll have conversations where there’s a lot of business terminology or jargon, you can’t really tell what’s behind that and what the motivator’s really are. So I try to lose all that as I’m in very authentic conversations with people. A colleague once said, “Rachel, you can turn a three-minute conversation into a counseling session.” And I found that an interesting piece of feedback to have because all I really do is try to listen and I do ask a lot of questions. And questions, again, around feelings which . . . it’s interesting to see people’s reactions often times when you’re asking those kinds of questions. It sometimes takes people aback and takes them a minute to really think about how they actually feel because they’re so busy thinking about the work or the task or the process and not really about the feelings that are involved in the work that they are doing.

Mustard Crusted Pickerel with Wilted Spinach

Wednesday's you can often find me, or one of my fellow chefs in the community room at the Superstore in Wasaga Beach preparing "what's for dinner" It’s one, fun filled hour from 11 AM until noon where you can ask questions and see a wide variety of foods being prepared and cooked. The $10 cost for lunch, recipes and demo is offset with a $10 gift certificate that can be used to shop anywhere in the store. One of the dishes we cooked and served up recently was a mustard crusted Georgian bay Pickerel with wilted greens. Pickerel is one of the many gems found in Georgian Bay renowned for its clean white flesh, mild sweet flavour and small flake. The mustard and lemon work well with the natural sweetness of the fish, and the wilted Spinach compliments the presentation and provides a bit of crunch. 4 Fresh water Pickerel Fillets (about 6 oz each) 1 tbsp dijon mustard 4 tsp lemon juice 2 tsp olive oil ½ tsp fresh thyme 1/2 tsp ground black pepper 4 tsp finely chopped garlic 12 oz spinach 2 tsp roasted sunflower or pumpkin seeds 1 tbsp finely chopped green onions Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a bake sheet with tinfoil. Cut the pickerel into approximately 6 oz portions and pat dry with a paper towel. Place skin side down on the tinfoil. Stir together the mustard, 1 tsp of the lemon juice and 1/2 the oil, the thyme and 1/2 the pepper in a bowl. Spread moisture over the surface of the fillets with a pastry brush, Bake in the center of the oven for about 10 minutes . Turn the oven to broil and cook until the fish is golden and flakes easily when prodded with a fork. Meanwhile, heat remaining tsp of oil in a frying pan over medium high heat and cook the garlic and remaining tsp of pepper 1 or 2 minutes, stirring constantly until garlic is tender. Stir in the Spinach and 1 tsp of the lemon juice and cook stirring until just barely wilted. Transfer to serving plates and top with the pickerel and sprinkle with sunflower seeds, onions and parsley.

Exotic Dancer Mommy Dear Mrs Jones I wish to clarify that I am not now, nor have I ever been an exotic dancer. I work at Home Depot and I told my daughter how hectic it was last week before the blizzard hit. I told her we sold out every single shovel we had and then I found one more in the back room, and that several people were fighting over who would get it. Her picture does not show me dancing around a pole. It's supposed to depict me selling the last snow shovel we had at Home depot. From now on I will remember to check her homework.

Barrie Central Metamorphosing into School of the Arts Barrie Central Collegiate epoch is metamorphosing into Central School of the Arts. Spearheaded by Damian Spaulding, founder and visionary of the Spaulding School of Music, who shared this exclusive news with beachBOOSTER radio. Beach Corner was privy to a round table meeting back in February where I had the opportunity to hear first hand as to the vision and goals of this transformation with the committee members (current standing of 50 individuals) all of whom are bringing their own expertise to this initiative. Spaulding School of Music has been steadily doubling over the years and according to Damian it's the next logical steps after the extraordinary success found within the Spaulding School of the Arts. “Central Collegiate is closing this year. We are now in a position to purchase Central by pulling the community of Central Collegiate into Central School of the Arts engaging Kindergarten to grade 12. Teaching all areas such as math, science geography right down to dance and music but from an artistic perspective,” said Damian Spaulding, founder and visionary of Spaulding School of Music. Damian is known as the man behind the method. He is a professional studio musician, live stage artist and music teacher. In the last 20-years, Damian perfected a method of learning music by ear recognized as the “Spaulding Method” that is now being standardized and taught worldwide. It all started with a rumour, the Barrie Spaulding School of Music studio is located at 80 Bradford Street beside Central Collegiate where they shared a parking lot. Damian was dreaming of creating a full bloom profile education from K-12. “I struggled through grade school and high school although I got the grades but often found myself being bored in class. They weren't working at the right pace and they weren't giving me the materials in which I would enjoy. By the time I would self teach myself. I am a self taught musician, entrepreneur, programmer and through this history build the largest school in Central Ontario”, said Spaulding. This will be a private school allowing the most leverage and dynamic fluid in their vision as well as making it affordable for anyone. “Very competitive easy to budget at the same time working with different philanthropists, individuals in the area in sponsoring children.” The building holds an auditorium of a capacity of 1,000 people. Damian plans to open the auditorium for productions at a lower price making it affordable for the majority of individuals showcasing their plays. His vision is not limited to an Arts Centre but a complete Community Centre. The team has a few months to raise the funds to secure the asset by June with renovations starting in July/August and ready to open the doors by September 2016. As far as transportation they are doing their best sorting out the buses to accommodate approximately 1,000 students pulling from the region along with Wasaga Beach, Collingwood, Barrie and abroad. For every “Friends of the Festival” ticket you purchase for $50.00 you not only receive a pass for two to attend every Public View and Vote that is scheduled in the Month of April, you lend a friendly helping hand to grow the Wasaga Film Festival making it more and more successful. As the Wasaga Film festival grows alongside sister festivals like the Georgian Triangle Music Festival, the Wasaga Beach Blues Festival, The Wasaga Beach Palaver International Literary Festival and others, we strengthen our community business case to build a Wasaga Beach Cultural Centre and re-invigorate the Wasaga Beach brand. We will continue to build recognition for Wasaga Beach as a place for exciting family and fun experiences known for good food, good getaways, reflection, good fun and great attractions while being recognized as a leading community in South Georgian Bay in which to live and work and play. Summer of 2016! The Beach is BACK!

Residents and visitors to Wasaga Beach have been waiting for many years, to see much needed changes to our World Famous Main Beach area and Wasaga Beach’s once vibrant and active Historic Main Street. All of us at Beach BOOSTER are very excited to share just some of the exciting things that will be offered this summer! Beach BOOSTER Media Group will be giving updates in this local beach BOOSTER publication, on our popular social media sites and on truly local Beach BOOSTER Radio, as to the ongoing plans that will make residents proud to not only enjoy, but boast about with friends and family everywhere! The Main Street Market concept is moving forward with an official RFP out for construction of unique and distinctive “Kiosks” to bring fun and lively businesses back to Historic Main Street, a bleak and baron stretch of our Main Beach area since the destructive fire of 2007. Interest from existing local businesses and others for operation of the kiosks has been very encouraging. Council has approved the construction of a “tropical” looking beer garden to be a part of the fun of the Main Street Market. This open air patio will be operated by the Wasaga Beach Brewing Company who are in the process of brewing a unique and rewarding “Beach One Cerveza” , to be available late April. Approval has also been given for Live Entertainment to be a part of the experience and will hopefully be approved at the April 7th General Governance meeting. The Official Opening of the Main Street Market is planned for Canada Day Weekend! Many new businesses will be welcoming folks on Beach Drive this summer as there has been tremendous interest in the municipally owned buildings over looking our Main Beach. Previous tenants are looking forward to returning to enjoy the rejuvenated Main Beach area, including Burger King and Tim Hortons, as new comers will be added to the mix, including Beavertails being offered on the beach front! Keep watching for more Beach BOOSTER updates as we look forward to being a part of the excitement at our Main Beach area this summer!

Wasaga Beach Lions Club Presents 23rd Annual The former Miramar Motel (inset) on the Beach Front, commonly referred to as "The Blue Building", may finally see a new and exciting life! A proposal from local entrepreneur, Greg Buchanan of Junior's Pizza on Main Street, has been approved by town council. Greg hopes to move forward with a new and refreshing Food Court concept, filling the 6 units with unique offerings such as Pizza, Gourmet Hot Dogs, Subs & Pressed Sandwiches, Gourmet Fries, Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt and a Smoothie Bar with custom concoctions. A welcoming patio overlooking the Main Beach will complete this new exciting addition to our World Famous Main Beach.

Original Capstan Inn opened in 1912, but was destroyed by fire in 1915 and replaced.

The Capstan Inn One of the first beach front hotels in Wasaga Beach was the Capstan Inn. Sarah Ann and John McLean had operated businesses in The Beach with hotels and motels on the river. In 1911, they purchased a beach front lot at First Street and built the original Capstan Inn. This hotel offered a large outside porch and veranda that offered great views over the bay. A 1915 fire destroyed the first Capstan Inn, but the Mclean family quickly rebuilt a larger and more modern inn on the site to be open for the summer of 1916. This new elegant summer hotel became a landmark on the shores of Wasaga Beach, clad in white siding with a wide front verandah and a unique circular rotunda. The success of the Capstan Inn, meant a Dance Hall would

be a great addition to the Wasaga Beach attractions, so the McLean family built the historic Dardanella Dance Pavilion across First Street in 1918. John Adair McLean, wrote in the Toronto Telegram in the 1950s, “The guests used to dress for dinner and then as the great ball of the sun went down in the bay, they would walk across the cooling sands to the dance hall (the Dardanella) where they would perform the fox trot between waltzes and sip ice cream sodas between dances”. Some guests would come prepared to stay at the Capstan Inn for weeks at a time in the summer months, arriving from Toronto by train in Stayner and then by horse drawn coaches to our sandy shores to start their Wasaga Beach holiday in the sun. The Capstan Inn remained in the McLean family throughout the years, with several major renovations taking place, including the addition of the famous Windjammer Room,

Capstan Inn as it was in 1942 known as “The Jammer”, offering great live entertainment. Other notable Wasaga Beach hotels run by the McLean family were The Nottawa Inn, The Breakers, Wasaga Inn and they also operated a similar establishment in Clearwater Florida over the winter months, known as The Oceola Inn. After the hotel left the ownership of the McLean family in 1958, the Capstan Inn remained in operation with several owners over the years, until it was acquired by Blue Mountain Resorts in 1984. This was the first investment for Blue Mountain Resorts outside of the Blue Mountain area. The structures on the property were demolished and the new owners installed a $1.3 million complex, Wasaga Beach’s first Water Slide. Joe Bickerstaff

Blue Mountain Resorts invests $1.3 million in Wasaga Beach's first Water Slide in 1984, on the Capstan Inn site.

Expert answers to your health and wellness questions by Jessica Brown Question: I have a very simple question for you…how often should I weigh myself? Answer: Assuming you’re trying to lose weight, it really depends on where you are in the weight loss process and how sensitive you are to the results. If you’re in the early stages of active weight loss, I’d only recommend weighing in once every one to two weeks. Keeping it to a minimum will help you focus more on your behaviors. After all, consistency is key when it comes to both diet and exercise, and obsessing about the numbers on the scale won’t change anything. And let’s not forget that it can take some time for the scale to start trending down, especially if you’ve just started an exercise program. However, if you’ve reached your weight loss goals, and you’re now in maintenance mode, I’d recommend weighing yourself more frequently. That’s right—I said more often, and there’s actually research to support this. The logic behind it is simple. If you’re weighing more frequently, you’ll be able to quickly identify weight gain trends and respond accordingly. A couple days each week is probably enough to keep you at or near your target. There’s one last point that’s important here, and it sort of goes without saying. The number on the scale is just one aspect of the weight loss process. In other words, tracking other metrics of success, like how you’re feeling, your circumference measurements, and your body composition are just as important! Question: A friend of mine keeps telling me I should be doing more compound movements. What does this mean and what are the benefits? Answer: Your friend is right! Isolated movements are really more appropriate for targeting weak areas or for rehabilitating after an injury. Today’s fitness trends typically involve more functional movements that mimic real-life activities. That’s why compound exercises are becoming so popular. They’re essentially just multi-joint exercises that work several muscles at a time. Examples include pull-ups,

push-ups, squats, lunges, deadlifts, kettlebell swings, dips, and even jumping rope. And this is only scratching the surface when it comes to compound exercises. There are numerous reasons to incorporate more compound movements into your training. Here are just a few of the benefits: · Provides a full body workout in a shorter period of time · Improves coordination, reaction time, and balance · Provides cardiovascular benefits by keeping your heart rate elevated · Decreases risk of injury during sports · Burns more calories · Allows for heavier lifts that will build strength faster I highly recommend adding compound movements to your workout regimen, and if you give them a try, have fun with them and get creative. Think of new ways to use stability balls, medicine balls, Bosu balls, bands, kettlebells, ropes, and, of course, your own body weight to work multiple muscle groups at a time!
