Beach One Cerveza Is Here !

The First Pour of the Beach One Cerveza happened at Marlwood Golf & Country Club on April 22nd with Mayor Brian Smith doing the honours. Surely an exciting time for the four gentlemen pictured above. Left to Right: the Wasaga Beach Brewing Company partners David Cubitt, Eric Mitchell, Mike Boyle and Peter Wilkins toast the launch of Beach One Cerveza.

All of us are encouraged about the good things coming to The Beach. Residents will be proud and visitors will be amazed! The Beach is BACK!" Photo courtesy of Enrique Photo Art

Wasaga Beach Downtown Planning Moves Forward Recently The Town of Wasaga Beach released a Request For Proposal (RFP) for interested consulting firms to work with the town on the Master Plan for Wasaga Beach Downtown, Main Street and the Main Beach area. When the RFP closes on May 12th, the town hopes to be in position to choose an interested firm to partner with town staff and start work on this exciting Master Plan as a Recommendation Report will be brought forward to council mid-May. An important part of moving forward with the plan for our community friendly and active downtown space will be engaging residents of Wasaga Beach and gathering input from all as to how this space will develop over the years. Town staff agrees that the timing to start this process is right, as the many Wasaga Beach seasonal residents and cottagers can also be involved. All are very encouraged with the initial response to the recent RFP with many major Toronto and national consulting firms eager to participate. Please see story in this publication regarding the grant of $150,000.00 received from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport for this project. Joe Bickerstaff

Wasaga Beach Enjoys Recognition and Grants The Town of Wasaga Beach has been active in researching available grants to be used moving forward with the exciting plans for future growth and enhancement of our Tourism Industry. As a result, Wasaga Beach is receiving $63,000.00 from the Ministry of Culture, Tourism & Sport that will be used for the enhancements to the Main Street Market project on Historic Main Street. Mayor Brian Smith and members of Council are also pleased to announce that an additional $150,000.00 grant through the Tourism Development Fund from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport has been awarded. This funding represents the first important step as the Town moves forward with the creation of a new downtown that will deliver a unique, vibrant and authentic place for the residents of Wasaga Beach, along with helping to catalyze redevelopment of the tourism industry with the physical redevelopment of the Town's waterfront. The funding will support the costs associated with hiring a multidisciplinary consultant team to develop a Downtown Master Plan that will guide the redevelopment efforts for Wasaga Beach's new downtown. Mayor Brian Smith commented that “I would like to personally thank Minister Coteau and his staff for believing in and supporting Council's vision for the establishment of a downtown in Wasaga Beach and for being so wonderful to work with. This is a monumental step forward to improve and enhance the community for residents, visitors and business owners. I am thrilled for the betterment of our community to see the establishment of a downtown taking shape. Various Ministries within the Provincial Government have indicated support of this initiative which reaffirms that Council is moving in the right direction with the development of a downtown in Wasaga Beach. This funding builds on a long-term partnership with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport.” Joe Bickerstaff

Stuffed Chicken Marsala

One of my favorite Italian recipes is Chicken Marsala. This easy to make recipe combines, chicken, prosciutto ham, cheese and mushrooms in a rich creamy sauce. The sweet Marsala wine brings all of the flavours together. I always make extra sauce to serve over the accompanying pasta or rice.

Face Over for Two Rows Over and Two Seats Back! The song “Three Rows Over and Two Seats Back” by Bobby Curtola has a special meaning for Lana Grainger from Stayner. Bobby Curtola performed this song at the Ted Curl's Teenage Dance party Show on CFTO back in 1968. This is where the producer of the show selected Lana to be the “Face Over”. She was the girl who sat three rows over and two seats back. “The producer needed a Face Over and I got picked and almost cried”, flushed Lana. “Back then this was like the first music video.” These memories have since been cherished for years. Lana Grainger grew up in Toronto and spent her summer time in Wasaga Beach. At eleven years old, she was a model and went to New York where she had the opportunity to do more modeling. She owned the Grainger Gift Shop in Stayner for five years. “It was a dream of mine to own my own little shop. My daughter helped me with home décor, we carried beautiful items the little fancy bits,” expressed Lana. A great fan of Canadian Rock'n Roll Legend, Bobby Curtola who is scheduled to perform and present an award at the 5th Annual WFF Red Carpet Gala Awards on Saturday, April 30th at the Wasaga Beach RecPlex. Wasaga Beach Brewing Company, a partner of the film festival, is presenting Bobby Curtola. Knowing that Bobby is in town, it brought Lana back in her teens, she was so excited that she told her daughter “we have to go”. Lana is looking forward to seeing Bobby once again. “Every time I hear the song or think of him, it brings me back to the ponytails and rock'n roll era,” said Lana. Asked how she would feel meeting Bobby again she replied blushing like a teenager “I will feel honoured”.

Life was beautiful back then for Lana who was 15-yearsold. She recalls how that Summer Ted Curl asked her to be his mother's helper where she lived with his family. “Ted had a pool at this house and Bobby came up for BBQ and I said “hi” and drank a small bottle of Coke with him I had to take the kids to bed but tried to peak through the windows to get a glimpse of him in his bathing suit,” said Lana. Bobby was an innovator for his time and has since molded a lot of today's teen idols. What set Bobby apart from other artists according to Lana, “He just seemed so real, cute, bubble gummy so nice and polite. He sang about happy love, sweet soft precious things that life was like back then. It was a wonderful time to grow up in those days, it was a window of innocence.” Tickets are $25 each for the Red Carpet Gala Awards on the evening of April 30 and are available at the Chamber of Commerce located at 550 River Road West or visit wasagafilmfest.com and/or their Facebook page for the latest updates.

Dianna Chycki is host of Beach Corner and Co-chair of the Wasaga Film Festival. Beach Corner broadcast weekly Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Beach Corner article sponsored by Exchanging Vows Bridal Boutique in Collingwood.

One thing we as Canadians agree on is hockey and beer. It’s at the foundation of our DNA just like maple sugar and our Canadian Beaver. If you followed the Wasaga Beach Brewing Company First Pour event held at the newly renovated Marlwood Golf and Country Club banquet hall and lounge on Friday April 22, 2016, it was truly evident that this is not only just a new company launching a product. It was symbolism for a whole new cultural revival for the Town of Wasaga Beach. As evident as the name of this Beach Booster column is called Tipping Point, it certainly marked a tipping point for our new beginnings in this great town. The owners of the Wasaga Beach Brewing Company, David Cubitt, President, Peter Wilkins, Vice President, and their new team are the personification of what businesses for Wasaga Beach can be modelling for all of our businesses and community groups. They reflect the local culture, an invigorated can-do attitude and hope for the town of Wasaga Beach. Culture starts with “Beliefs”. They have beliefs that their Wasaga Beer will capture the hearts and minds of its residents and it visitors. You could see the smiles and hear the comments and cheers about onward and upward for Wasaga Beach as David Bacha’s Wasaga Beach Song was playing in the background; “Here’s to Wasaga…This is our year!” This new David Bacha song introduced by David Cubitt of Wasaga Beach Brewing Company could very well be the new anthem for Wasaga Beach. Culture sustains itself through “Belonging”. That was totally evident when Pete Wilkins started his welcome message with a story about his fond memories of riding here with his buddies in his mustang convertible and having the weekend of his life. He also talked warmheartedly about spending great summers here in Wasaga Beach. There are so many stories like his being told by many people who remember Wasaga Beach from their days of youth. In our town it’s the basis of belonging. “Come for a holiday and stay for a lifetime”. Most of us have a history of a connection to the Beach and it stays in our hearts. My uncle lived here in the 60s and our family used to vacation here in the summers. The Wasaga Beach Song goes on to say “The longest fresh water beach in the world, fun for the guys and made for the girls”. You can’t get any better belonging than that. The third “B” of culture is “Behaving”. Here’s where the believing and belonging rubber hits the road. It’s all about being ambassadors for Wasaga Beach. It’s about welcoming everyone with a smile, giving great service to everyone. Helping our neighbours. Remaining positive about our future and shared vision. Projecting our success forward with our friends, family and visitors. Contributing to the cause and not waiting for others to do it for us. Leaving entitlement at the door and embracing our new beginnings by working together and making it happen for our community, our family, our friends, Wasaga Beach. We have the opportunity to take our community culture to a whole new level. As David Bacha’s song goes: “This is our year. Here’s to Wasaga. This is how we say cheers (Wasaga) around here.” Believing Belonging and Behaving. We can do this. “Be the Beach”, send me your thoughts and comments at Gary@beachBOOSTER.com. Your efforts count in making this community the preferred place in which to live, work and play. Gary is president of Critel Professional Services, www.critel.ca, chairs the Wasaga Society for the Arts and the Wasaga Film Festival. Gary also lives, works and plays in Wasaga Beach.

Simcoe Approx. Pop. 15,000. In the Regional Municipality of Haldimand-Norforlk on the Lynn River and Hwys 3 & 24, 31 km. South of Brantford. In 1795 Canada’s first lieutenantgovernor, John Graves Simcoe, camped overnight at the site (then known by the Indian name Shain-e-ong). on his way to establish Fort Norfolk on Lake Erie. Simcoe subsequently granted lands to potential colonizers, including Aaron Culver, who received land on the condition that he build mills. By 1812 Culver had built a sawmill and a grist mill, and a community had formed around them. The mills were burned down during the War of 1812, and U.S. troops looted some homes. In 1815, Culver deeded some of his land to William Bird, who built the first store, and the place became known as Birdtown and Culver. Residents wanted to call the place Wellington Village, but since there already was a small community by that name near Picton, a second choice had to be made. That year the post office opened as Simcoe, honouring the late lieutenant-governor. The area where Simcoe camped is now a large park, including Lake George and a stretch of the Lynn River. Each winter thousands come to see Christmas Panorama-dozens of lighted Christmas displays in the park-which started by accident in 1957. That year Simcoe was to have had a big Santa Claus parade, but it was rained out. Folks had worked hard on their floats and wanted to show them off, so they placed them in town parks under floodlights. So many people turned out to see the display that format was continued and has been successfully copied by Toronto, Niagara Fall and Sarnia

Richard Scott Bakker (born February 2, 1967, Simcoe, Ontario) is a Canadian fantasy author. He grew up on a tobacco farm in the Simcoe area. In 1986 he attended the University of Western Ontario to pursue a degree in literature and later an MA in theory and criticism. After nearly completing, but ultimately abandoning, a PhD in philosophy at Vanderbilt University. R. Scott Bakker's work is dominated by a sprawling series informally known as The Second Apocalypse which he began developing while in college in the 1980s. The series was originally planned to be a trilogy with the first two books entitled The Prince of Nothing and The Aspect-Emperor. The third book has been referred to as The Book That Shall Not Be Named by Bakker, since the title of this book is considered to be a spoiler for the preceding volumes. When Bakker began writing the series in the early 2000s, however, he found it necessary to split each of the three novels into its own subseries to incorporate all of the characters, themes and ideas he wished to explore. Bakker originally conceived of seven books: a trilogy and two duologies. This later shifted to two trilogies and one duology, with the acknowledgment that the third series may also expand to a trilogy.

Historic Main Street to make an Exciting Comeback! while on vacation and many enjoyed a movie theatre on Main Street, when the Joyland Arcade was converted to the Centennial Theatre to show feature films. Of course the Arcade Building (once called the Rumpus Room) was always alive with the sound of Skee Ball, Pinball and folks having fun. The Arcade also provided a “walk through” to Playland Park, the colourful and exciting permanent midway at The Beach, known as one of Canada’s largest.

Our busy Main Street, 1940s

From the early 1920’s when businesses first opened up on Main Street in Wasaga Beach, we enjoyed a vibrant and busy shopping area up until the early 1970’s. The stretch of Main Street between the bridge and Beach Drive was a true “downtown” serving as the focal point of business and social activities in The Beach. For many years, as vehicles crossed the Main Street Bridge, traffic lights gave drivers the choice of making a left to continue on Mosley Street (then Provincial Hwy 92), turning right to access Spruce Street or continuing straight through to Main Street towards the beach. (Beach Drive) This section of Main Street provided curb side parking and both sides of the street was lined with busy shops, restaurants and services. Locals enjoyed the Main Street experience and visitors and cottagers would shop there while on the way to their accommodations. The ease of on street parking and the variety of shops meant visitors could stock up on all of their vacation needs and even enjoy a meal at one of the several restaurants. The Sand Piper was a brightly coloured, art deco style store that contained the latest in women’s fashions. Osborne’s store was a large well equipped business that carried all one would need while enjoying their stay in Wasaga Beach. Across the street was a drug store to help all stay healthy

bathing suits for the short summer season. Until the massive fire that destroyed most of the buildings on Main Street in November 2007, we were still able to walk the street of neglected store fronts and could only imagine it as a busy and exciting shopping area. Since the fire, this area has been a seldom used, lonely stretch, with the exception of several Beach BOOSTER events, organized to recognize this special historic stretch of Main Street. World Class Entertainment was featured in two “Back to The Beach” festivals as well as local entertainment using this space for the Beach BOOSTER “Rockn’ The Beach” festival in 2013.

Historic Main Street became a Pedestrian Mall in 1973

In 1972, it was decided to block vehicular traffic to our busy Main Street, in order to turn it into a pedestrian mall for the 1973 summer season. As folks crossed the bridge, Main Street was closed to vehicles with a sign that simply said “The Mall”. Over the next few years, visitors and locals who once enjoyed the busy Main Street as a shopping and meeting spot, found they missed the real town feel of the street and the ease of on street parking. Shoppers found it easier to do their shopping on the way to Wasaga Beach and headed directly to their accommodations. Soon the stores missed the regular business of visitors and locals and many closed or moved their businesses elsewhere. Empty and vacated buildings were leased or sold and began selling nothing but beach toys and

Anytime Fitness in Wasaga Beach welcomes a new Personal Trainer to The Beach Question: The popular activity trackers overwhelm me! I don’t have a smart phone nor am I very computer savvy. Is there one out there that would be good for someone like me? Answer: Most of the popular activity trackers do require you to sync the device to your smartphone or computer in order to track data and utilize all of the features the device has to offer such as sleep activity, calories burned, and heart rate. If simply tracking movement is your primary focus and you’re interested in a device that doesn’t require additional technology, the tried-and-true pedometer is the way to go. A pedometer senses your body motion and counts your footsteps. This count is converted into distance by knowing the length of your usual stride. Some of the best pedometers can calculate more than just steps. Without the need to sync to a computer, you might find a pedometer that also displays distance, calories burned, speed, and steps per minute or function as a stopwatch or clock. Wearing a pedometer and recording steps is a great motivating tool to keep moving daily and it’s as easy as clipping the pedometer to your belt and heading out the door. Question: What are the health benefits to eating a plant-based diet? Answer: A plant-based diet includes more volume of food from plants than animals. This type of diet includes grains, beans, lentils, fruits and vegetables along with, if you are not vegan, fish, lean-meats, and low-fat dairy. A plant-based diet has many benefits such as being high in fiber, vitamins and minerals, along with having high levels of antioxidants that are

critical to neutralizing free radicals that cause aging and chronic disease. A plant-based diet also has a much lower caloric concentration than animal protein, which allows for more food volume without excessive weight gain. The first step in moving towards a plant-based diet is to fill half of your plate with vegetables and/or fruit, a quarter of your plate with whole grains and the remaining quarter with a lean meat or plant-based protein such as beans or lentils. Continue to adjust the makeup of your plate until the entire plate is full of veggies or fruit, which might take a bit of time.
