Pork Souvlaki Souvlaki is a one of my favorite meats to grill on the BBQ. Tender, delicious, and juicy the pork loin skewers cook quickly and evenly producing an amazingly delicious aroma and flavor. These will be an excellent addition to your spring and summer favorites. I have included a tasty recipe for Tzatziki sauce as well if you feel inspired to make your own. This dish can be served as a sandwich in a pita with tomatoes and onions, or as a tasty entree with rice and a fresh garden salad. 1 1/2 lbs boneless pork loin 1/4 cup lemon juice 1/4 cup olive oil 4 garlic cloves crushed 1 tablespoon dried oregano 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 6 Greek pita breads Trim and cut pork into 1 inch cubes. In large bowl, whisk together lemon juice, oil, garlic, oregano, salt and pepper. Add pork and stir to coat. Marinate in the refrigerator for 30 minutes thread pork onto six 8 inch skewers and place directly on the BBQ. If you are broiling them in the oven place on a foil lined bake sheet Brush with marinade. Broil 6 inches away from heat or grill turning halfway through, until just a hint of pink remains inside, about 12 minutes. Spread tzatziki over each pita. Remove pork from skewers and place on pitas; fold over. Serve with diced tomatoes and onions.

Tzatziki Sauce Ingredients 8 ounces Greek yogurt 1/2 medium cucumbers, peeled, seeded and finely chopped 2 ounces sour cream 1 small pinch salt 1 1/2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar 2 mint leaves, finely minced 1 garlic clove crushed Put the chopped cucumber in a tea towel and squeeze to remove liquid. Discard liquid. Sprinkle with 1 teaspoon salt and mix into the cucumber. Set aside 20 minutes. Then squeeze again to remove as much liquid as possible. Combine the yogurt and cucumber, sour cream, pinch of salt, olive oil, red wine vinegar, mint and garlic. Place sauce in the refrigerator for 1 hour or more to meld flavors. Stir before serving. A Memorable Night at 5th Wasaga Film Festival Red Carpet Gala Awards Thanks to Town Council declaring “April” as film festival month, the Wasaga Film Festival had a busy four weeks of screenings throughout our community held at various local businesses that culminated at the Red Carpet Gala Awards on April 30th at the Wasaga Beach RecPlex. It was a starstudded evening with opening act, Telstars Rock'nRoll Show Band, a 50's and 60's music genre, a breathtaking performance by Emma Wright our 2015 Collingwood Idol with local favourite singer/songwriter, Rebecca Stephens, who sang her 2014 WFF Regional SGB Platinum Music Video Award song “There is a Light” produced by double Platinum award winner and 2016 WFF Regional SGB Gold Award Music Video for “Devil in Me” by The Sandra Good Band, Mary Ann Watts. The Wasaga Beach Glee Club impressed the audience with their rendition of “Video Kill the Radio Star”, featured artist, Lyric Dubee currently in Malibu sent a video greeting including two performances of his new songs. Gordon Deppe and Sandy Horne from The Spoons brought back the 80's nostalgia during the evening with their hit song “Romantic Traffic”. Special guest presented by Wasaga Beach Brewing Company, Canadian Legend Rock'n Roll, Bobby Curtola charmed the women with “Fortune Teller” and “Three Rows Over and Two Seats Down”. In the audience the Face Over for this song where Bobby performed back in 1968 at Ted Curl's Teenage Dance Show on CFTO, our local resident, Lana Grainger. Lana was delighted to re-unite with Bobby Curtola after all these years. Bobby took time to do a few photo op and signed autographs. Celebrity greeters included Eh440, Mike MacDonald, Jack Blum from REEL Canada and Rick Mercer from his CBC studio returned to congratulate the film festival.

The coveted WFF Regional SGB Master Award sponsored by Wasaga Beach Brewing Company and the Platinum Documentary Award sponsored by the Town of Wasaga Beach went to producer, Kevin DeAbreu for “Alive”. Live Media set up an incredible lighting display for the halls along with the retro set design created by Garry Sawatsky from Skull Island. Beautiful paintings decorated the stage by Janick Lemieux from Open Heart SOULutions. Rogers TV was filming the show for a future broadcast date where I had the pleasure of conducting Red Carpet Gala interviews. The beautiful new backdrop was the hub of the night for our photographers, Enrique Photo Art, Bryan Davies and Watts Photography. Scrumptuous hors d'oeuvres were served by our local, Taste of Paradise with Beach One Cerveza from Wasaga Beach Brewing Company on site. The next day, our special guests, Bobby Curtola and Sandy Horne from The Spoons were treated to a brunch offered by Sunset Grill owner, Nancy Dyson. It was a nice way of ending a memorable fifth annual season. Thank you to WFF and WSA committee members, the volunteers, the presenters, the performers, the judges and the sponsors for making this event a reality. Congratulations to the winners! My wife Eva and I keep meeting more and more people from the Stonebridge by the Bay residential community as we look for more things to do in Wasaga Beach. We are discovering that everyone we meet from the Stonebridge family of residents is first and foremost very happy, engaging and friendly. They are excited about the friendships they have created in their community. Friendships seem to be the basis for the flurry of ongoing Stonebridge resident events and activities that get organized in this community only to reinforce the lifestyle they were seeking when considering moving to Wasaga Beach. Check out the Stonebridge Residents Wasaga Beach Community Facebook page. It is chock a block full of events and activities going on within the Stonebridge resident community. What we have here, is a burgeoning community culture of people that by common lifestyle interest have come together to enjoy a good thing. You will discover very quickly that people in this community are engaging and noticeably accomplished in one way or another in business, arts, education, public service, teaching and the list goes on. As you look a little deeper into this community, you discover that many people are involved and play an active volunteer role in making things like the Wasaga Blues Festival, the Wasaga Film Festival and many other events and initiatives successful. Stonebridge residents also seems to also have their fair share of residents that have been recognized in this community like Citizen of the Year Award, Order of Wasaga Beach award, Wasaga Beach Volunteer award, etc. The Stonebridge Residents culture lends itself to developing broad capacities relevant to community building since all successful initiatives are built on strong relationships. Strong relationships are at the foundation of solving problems, making group decisions and collaborating effectively to identify goals and get the community building work done. I truly believe that we should be tracking the success of our communities within our Community of Wasaga Beach like the Stonebridge Residents Wasaga Beach Community. We can learn from them. As we understand what makes them vibrant, what makes them fun and engaging, what makes them “Wasaga Great”, we can apply those principles in other areas of our overall Wasaga Beach community building. It will all add to our Wasaga Beach brand and develop a sought after community culture where people can find a good healthy quality of life; living, working, learning and playing in this great community. “Be the Beach”, send me your thoughts and comments at Gary@beachBOOSTER.com. Your efforts count in making this community the preferred place in which to live, work, learn and play. Gary is president of Critel Professional Services, www.critel.ca, chairs the Wasaga Society for the Arts and the Wasaga Film Festival. Gary also lives, works, learns and plays in Wasaga Beach.

Anytime Fitness in Wasaga Beach welcomes a new Personal Trainer to The Beach Question: My weeks are extremely busy and it’s tough enough to find time to exercise. Now, I’m learning that I need to strength train in addition to my cardio. I don’t always have time to do this separately. Is there a way to mix cardio into my strength training routine to maximize my exercise time? Anwser: The easiest way to mix cardio and strength is to alternate the two disciplines in short segments Perform two strength exercises and immediately get on your favourite cardio machine for 3 - 5 minutes. You can also shorten up the time spent between your strength exercise and move quickly to the next exercise to keep your heart rate elevated. This will provide a cardio challenge without having to find additional time to jump on cardio equipment. Keep track of your current rest between sets and slowly begin to decrease the rest time to 30 seconds. Question: I have that adding omegas to your diet is important. Can you please explain the difference between omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 fatty acids and what foods they can be found in? Answer: Omega-3, Alpha-Linoenic Acid, is an essential fatty acid that plays an important role in brain function. Omega-3 can be found in fatty fish like salmon and tuna and is naturally found in Brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds, flaxseeds or flaxseed oil. Omega-6, Linoleic Acid, is also an essential fatty acid and can be found in seeds, nuts and green leafy vegetables like broccoli and kale. Omega-9m Monounsaturated Oleic and Stearic Acid is a non-essential fatty acid. This fatty acid plays role in supporting a healthy and balanced cholesterol level as well as improving immune function. Omega-9 is found in avocados macadamia nuts, pecans, almonds and olive oil.
