Joe Belanger Selected To Fill Vacant Council Position

Grilled Salmon with Pea Mash This recipe is quick and easy to make. The salmon can be prepared in the oven or on the barbeque. The peas add the perfect background to the salmon while the yogurt and horseradish mixture brings it all together. If grilling, cook skin side down on a hot grill turning once.

Photo by Kareem Thomas New councillor Joe Belanger pictured with Wasaga Beach Mayor Brian Smith will take the Oath of Office on June 28th.

Joe Belanger has been chosen in a vote of council to fill the vacancy left when former Councillor Ron Anderson quit his position in April. There were 17 candidates who entered their names to be considered for the position of councillor. Joe Belanger is now retired, but has spent most of his career in an executive position including sales with a national auto parts supplier and has lived in Wasaga Beach for the past 12 years. He is currently co-chair of the Wasaga Beach Blues Festival. Joe received the support of four members of councillors, Mayor Brian Smith and councillors Ron Ego, Bonnie Smith & Bill Stockwell. “I believe the purchase of the beach properties will go down as one of the smartest moves this town has ever made,” Belanger said. “Once we become a little more development friendly, once we start work on the downtown, once we start improving tourism, exponentially the value of that beachfront is going to skyrocket. We'll get all our investment back with major dividends.” The official swearing in as councillor will take place at Tuesday's council meeting. European market. DO NOT have a knee jerk reaction that could cost you big bucks. Let the big boys play and when the dust settles review your accounts. Don't get caught up in chicken little mentality. The computers were down at work today, so we had to do everything manually. It took me twenty minutes to shuffle the cards to play solitaire. I let a Jehovahs Witness in my home, I sat him down and said, 'what do you have to tell me?' he said, 'I don't know, never made it this far. Historic Main Street Makes Exciting Comeback! From the early 1920’s when businesses first opened up on Main Street in Wasaga Beach, we enjoyed a vibrant and busy shopping area up until the early 1970’s. The stretch of Main Street between the bridge and Beach Drive was a true “downtown” serving as the focal point of business and social activities in The Beach. For many years, as vehicles crossed the Main Street Bridge, traffic lights gave drivers the choice of making a left to continue on Mosley Street (then Provincial Hwy 92), turning right to access Spruce Street or continuing straight through to Main Street towards the beach. (Beach Drive) This section of Main Street provided curb side parking and both sides of the street was lined with busy shops, restaurants and services. Locals enjoyed the Main Street experience and visitors and cottagers would shop there while on the way to their accommodations. The ease of on street parking and the variety of shops meant visitors could stock up on all of their vacation needs and even enjoy a meal at one of the several restaurants. The Sand Piper was a brightly coloured, art deco style store that contained the latest in women’s fashions. Osborne’s store was a large well equipped business that carried all one would need while enjoying their stay in Wasaga Beach. Across the street was a drug store to help all stay healthy while on vacation and many enjoyed a movie theatre on Main Street, when the Joyland Arcade was converted to the Centennial Theatre to show feature films. Of course the Arcade Building (once called the Rumpus Room) was always alive with the sound of Skee Ball, Pinball and folks having fun. The Arcade also provided a “walk through” to Playland Park, the colourful and exciting permanent midway at The Beach, known as one of Canada’s largest. In 1972, it was decided to block vehicular traffic In 1972, it was decided to block vehicular traffic to our busy Main Street, in order to turn it into a pedestrian mall for the 1973 summer season. As folks crossed the bridge, Main Street was closed to vehicles with a sign that simply said “The Mall”.

Historic Main Street became a Pedestrian Mall in 1973

Over the next few years, visitors and locals who once enjoyed the busy Main Street as a shopping and meeting spot, found they missed the real town feel of the street and the ease of on street parking. Shoppers found it easier to do their shopping on the way to Wasaga Beach and headed directly to their accommodations. Soon the stores missed the regular business of visitors and locals and many closed or moved their businesses elsewhere. Empty and vacated buildings were leased or sold and began selling nothing but beach toys and bathing suits for the short summer season. Until the massive fire that destroyed most of the buildings on Main Street in November 2007, we were still able to walk the street of neglected store fronts and could only imagine it as a busy and exciting shopping area. Since the fire, this area has been a seldom used, lonely stretch, with the exception of several Beach BOOSTER events, organized to recognize this special historic stretch of Main Street. World Class Entertainment was featured in two “Back to The Beach” festivals as well as local entertainment using this space for the Beach BOOSTER “Rockn’ The Beach” festival in 2013 Beach BOOSTER is excited to see the return of fun, entertainment and shopping with the new Main Street Market on Historic Main Street. Keep watching beach BOOSTER publication for updates and news on what is planned as Main Street and Wasaga Beach’s World Famous Main Beach! Joe Bickerstaff

TIPPING POINT Changing Wasaga Beach Lives

GARY CERANTOLA gary@beachBOOSTER.com

Our Dog Duke Four Years Later Four years ago, I wrote a Beach BOOSTER article about the arrival of our furry dog child Duke. It went something like this. It’s Official; Duke’s a Wasagian. Eva and I have just become pet foster parents. Son Steven has taken a job in Northern Alberta and has entrusted us to take care of his dog Duke for an extended duration. What to do? What to do? We have never been dog owners before and we were faced with all of these questions? Since then, Duke is our forever dog and the Beach is his forever home. Well what a difference four years make. When Duke came to live with us he was eight years old. He ran like

a rocket, turned corners like Mario Andretti and jumped over fallen trees in the forest like a gazelle. Now he’s 12 and in his twilight years. I never thought Eva and I would come to love him as much as we do. Duke is just one “big hunk o love”. He has many uncle and aunties on our street. He actually knows where auntie Mary and uncle John next door store his cookie treats. This dog just bursts and bubbles with love with anyone who comes near him. You are convinced his tail is going to waggle right off him. You can see it in the eyes of his greeter how much he has a loving effect on people. Eva and I can not sleep-in in the mornings. Duke is not satisfied until Eva and I are up drinking our morning coffee together and he is close-by watching over his pack. Oh yes, he has trained us well. We know exactly when he has to go out and use his personalized red fire hydrant we spotted for him in the back yard. He gets his point across very effectively when he wants his feeding. He signals us to open the door when he wants to go out. He even opens the screen door by himself when he wants to come back in. We are still surprised each time when he toggles the vehicle window switch and opens the back window in the vehicle when he wants his own bit of fresh air as we are driving down the road. And that thing about doggy unconditional love, well that’s an understatement. I guess until you are a pet owner you really can’t understand how a loyal loving pet brings you joy, happiness and oh yes, a few surprises along the way. We truly love Duke and he shows mutual affection towards us. We realize that he will not be around forever but in the mean time he is part of our family and a big part of our lives. Pets are a lot of work but they sure bring joy and love into the home. “Be the Beach”, send me your thoughts and comments at Gary@beachBOOSTER.com.
