An Exciting Future in Wasaga Beach... BOOSTING The Beach is What WE Do! All who love the Town of Wasaga Beach, while understanding the amazing history of our town, have enjoyed what I have been calling “The Summer of the Century!” With the new and exciting initiatives made possible by Mayor Brian Smith, the forward thinking members of council and town staff, we all found encouragement as there was evidence that we were returning to our roots and recognizing our one and only industry...tourism! In addition, Mother Nature seemed eager to help us with our revitalization of our Main Beach and Historic Main Street areas with amazing Summer weather that any Resort Town would appreciate. Every member of the Beach BOOSTER Media Group team was eager to be a part of all the excitement this past Summer and we look forward to a rewarding Winter Season... and of course even more “Good Stuff” coming at us for next Summer! Bill Frieday and I (Joe Bickerstaff) are the founders and proud partners in Beach BOOSTER Media Group, Wasaga Beach’s only locally owned and operated media source that includes outdoor, print, radio advertising and promotion, along with several other creative avenues. Beach BOOSTER Media Group believes in our town and continues to recognize our original mandate of “Promoting Wasaga Beach, its people and its businesses in a positive way!” With a team of dedicated, community minded contributors, Beach BOOSTER Media Group is proud to be involved in and supportive of many community events and initiatives.

Beach BOOSTER Group has presented many Special Events that brought recognition back to Historic Main Street with our “Back to The Beach” street festivals and “Rockn’ The Beach” music festival, both bringing locals and visitors to Main Street at our Main Beach area. Our motorsport events recognized our racing history and the one time “Snowmobile Capital” designation enjoyed by Wasaga Beach of yesteryear as we presented the “Wasaga Grand Prix” and “SLEDFEST” snowmobile racing events at our Main Beach. With each and every issue of our all local beach BOOSTER publication, we continue to provide positive local features, promote local events and initiatives while promoting Wasaga Beach in our hard copy editions and our very popular On Line Edition that is available to enjoy and share anywhere, on any device! Beach BOOSTER Radio, as Wasaga Beach’s only truly local radio station, continues our great local programming, community events and announcements, local artist’s music and Classic Hits, while promoting Wasaga Beach to our listeners locally and beyond, as we broadcast directly from Wasaga Beach to the world as an entertaining local radio station available on any device, on line. Throughout the summer months, Beach BOOSTER Radio joining the Classic Hits Radio Network each weekday and every Saturday added a listenership of 1.5 million to our base, with each listener hearing the “Good Stuff” about The Beach and encouraging them to visit our town.

Beach BOOSTER Media Group appreciates our valued advertisers who support our efforts to promote our community in a positive way! David Cubitt of the Wasaga Beach Brewing Company states; “Since the introduction of our company, Joe Bickerstaff and Beach Booster Media Group, have always been strong supporters of our company goals. To not only be the beer choice of our Town, but to also embrace, and assist in the fact that we want to generate great exposure for the Town in both, a marketing sense, and building the Town to be seen as a great place to visit. For Joe, this has been his mandate since day one, and for Wasaga Beach Brewing Company, to be working together with the Beach Booster Media Group, we feel that it has always had a positive effect on our company, and local exposure to assist in our goals of generating a positive Town based company, with good intentions toward the Town of Wasaga Beach.” As we look towards our future and a very exciting time for Wasaga Beach, Beach BOOSTER Media Group has completed the move to our NEW Office and Studio as our plans include a rewarding Winter and of course a fun and exciting Summer of 2017! Bringing Live Entertainment Simcoe Shenanigans is a new company in Wasaga Beach with the intent in bringing live entertainment to communities and area while featuring popular local talent. The company spearheaded by Dan Bell and Richard Saunders in partnership with other businesses in Wasaga Beach aims to hire people in town as the company grows. After listening to many residents in Wasaga Beach on how entertainment was lacking in our neighborhood, cofounders, Dan Bell and Richard Saunders decided to form “Simcoe Shenanigans” by filling the gap for much needed live performances for our community to enjoy during the winter months and throughout the year. “The Residents of Wasaga Beach made us aware that the entertainment wasn't put on for the residents but only for the visiting tourist during the summer season so we addressed the void and now we are trying to bring entertainers for the residents to enjoy for the winter and all year long,” said co-founder, Dan Bell. Dan feels live shows bring a community together by encouraging people to meet their neighbours. “Without live entertainment everyone is in their homes watching television. You don't get to meet your neighbours and those neighbours can become friends and now the community is vibrant because of live entertainment.” One of the goals is to promote the Town of Wasaga Beach to the world where they hope to play an important role in helping the community with the local economy. “We would like to develop Wasaga Beach into the live entertainment capital of Ontario. It is a unique area with the most beautiful longest fresh water beach on the planet.

The people here are amazing. Live entertainment can be a very important component in bringing tourist whether they are day-trippers or vacationers to this district. As we develop this live entertainment component, people will see greater numbers of tourist which means awful lot more money into the region.” With the abundance of talented artists in Wasaga Beach and rural areas, Simcoe Shenanigans are looking to recruit within the community while nurturing fledging artists. “Butting artists, cover and tribute bands we can use everyone in our shows. We are interested in promoting Wasaga Beach residents who have talent. I think if you are going to promote Wasaga Beach to the world then promoting local people who have talent is very important,” expressed Dan. “The best way people can contact us is through the email link on our web page. We respond to every single email that we receive.” Simcoe Shenanigans hopes to market live events for Simcoe County as well as have opportunities to promote sizable functions in Barrie. Dan further explains: “As the town grows, Wasaga Beach will also have larger venues soon where we can bring bigger names. Currently working on a winter program to help Wasga Beach become a –year-round entertainment sector. At the moment, I think we are going to focus the next year or two on major summer events.” For more information visit shenanigans.ca or Facebook page.

TIPPING POINT Changing Wasaga Beach Lives

The Halloween Opportunity

David Harrison Shop Owner / Mechanic

‘Tis the season for goblins, ghouls, and witches in our part of the world. In the October daylight through the forest amidst the fallen leaves you can’t help but notice a spooktacular site as you are passing the Flos Road 3 W intersection on Crossland Road. No, it’s not the crooked forest of Western Poland’s Gryfino. It’s two trees, one small tree and one very large tree completely draped in pairs of footwear. Your first take leads you to ask yourself, what? Then your mind starts wandering and you start postulating that all those pairs of soles may have a more profound meaning. Was Freddy Krueger collecting foot apparel from his victims and placing them on his trophy trees? Or, is it the curse of the shoe trees? Legend has it that at the edge of a farmer's field just south of Belding Michigan, hundreds of pairs of shoes hang like fruit from the tree. It started with a young boy who worked the field during the Depression without shoes for several winters and lost his feet to frostbite. Infection set in, killing him while he was still in his teens. Before he died, he cursed the fact that such a basic necessity didn't grow on trees. On the first anniversary of his death, a pair appeared on one of the low hanging branches. Since then, every year, more and more shoes have appeared on the tree. It's said that his ghost can be seen each night as the sun sets, watching over his crop of shoes. So what is the story for the shoe trees at Flos Road 3 W and Crossland? Does anybody know? In a Tipping Point moment, I would say these trees would make a good scary weekend theme to have a festival and have our friends join us for a fun filled weekend in October. Can you say “Extend the tourism season in Wasaga Beach”.

Here's a scary thought. Why don't we make our Freddy Kruger shoe theme into a Halloween spooctacular October event to extend our tourism season and combine it with an arts fest and novel weekend fall event with local produce and fall cooking sales and fall comfort food preparations competition. We can learn from our friends in Meaford that feature their Halloween Theme weekend which keeps getting bigger and better. Better yet, maybe we can join in on making the Halloween weekend an overall South Georgian bay event to remember. All it will take is a few of our brilliant idea people in Wasaga Beach to make it happen. “Be the Beach”, send me your thoughts and comments at Gary@beachBOOSTER.com. The Dardanella Dance Pavillion We have all driven by her, but now we take little notice. Although she is 99 years old, she still stands tall, looking over our beautiful beach. “The Grand Old Lady of The Beach”. The Dardanella! After the first few years of successfully operating a beach front hotel, John McLean of Collingwood decided he needed a Dance Pavilion to compliment his Capstan Inn, one of Wasaga Beach’s first beachfront hotel. He built The Dardanella across the street (now 1st Street) from his hotel in 1918. He chose the famous name from the most popular song of the day, Dardanella. In the day, the song was performed by many and is believed to be the very first recording to ever sell one million copies! Today she is affectionately referred to as “The Dard” and is one of the last surviving Dance Halls of the many that were a part of Ontario’s history. The McLean family ran The Dardanella right through until the

Expert answers to your health and wellness questions by Jessica Brown

Question: I have been sidelined from working out because of blisters on my feet. I usually get them after I run outdoors or after a workout on the cardio machines. I don’t think it’s my shoes. Could it be my socks are the culprit? Answer: If you feel your shoes are the appropriate fit and style for your workout, then yes, wearing the wrong kind of socks could be the cause of your foot problems. Socks provide cushion between your skin and your shoe and can either prevent or cause friction. Socks that are too thick or too loose and made out of 100% cotton lead to friction that can cause blisters and create a perfect environment for bacterial growth that can cause athlete’s foot or foot odor. Seek out a sock with cushioning in the ball of the foot or heel, but not cushioning throughout the entire sock, which provides added bulk. Socks should be made out of microfiber fabrics designed to wick away moisture, which is the key to helping your foot stay dry and friction free. Question: Are there any other exercises I can do for my biceps? I always do dumbbell curls but I’m starting to get bored and hoping you can give me some new exercises to try. Answer: While biceps exercises can seem monotonous, there are several variations that you can do to bring some excitement back into

50’s. The original dance floor was round, surrounded with a railing for jitney dancing. Although the exterior of the building has gone through many changes, the dance floor is still there, but is now forgotten, dusty and has suffered roof damage due to years of neglect. Under the main dance floor, the lower level housed a bowling alley that was accessible through the main doors on the beach and past the lunch counter. In later years, this space was converted into “The Sharke Barre”, with its panelled walls, port holes and décor it resembled the interior of a ship. Many of the tables in this lounge were on a raised platform that with a closer look could be recognized as the old bowling lanes. Over the years, the grand old building with its Dance Hall and Bowling Alley, also housed a Tavern, Dining Lounge, Beauty Parlour, Tea Room, Soda Bar and Lunch Counter. After the McLean family sold The Dardanella, Jack and Mary Timlock and their family ran the business successfully for 30 years. Since the Timlocks, there have been several owners and operators, including locals Michelle and Rick Seip who

continued the great tradition of making The Dardanella a fun and exciting place to enjoy top entertainment. In recent years, although the main bar and beach front patio was updated, the Dance Hall was closed off, neglected and forgotten. We now wonder the status of The Dardanella. There are two other Ontario venues that remain from the glory days of Dance Halls. “The Key to Bala” (originally Dunn’s Dance Pavilion) and the grand “Palais Royal” in Toronto are still vibrant and operating successfully to continue the tradition of providing a waterfront place to enjoy entertainment. Both facilities have been updated and are in high demand for all kinds of events from weddings to conventions and meetings. Perhaps it’s time to bring The Dardanella back to life with entertainment and fun, as she has provided so many people with joy for so many years. She is the last bit of architectural history we have in Wasaga Beach and maybe she deserves a little bit of help? Joe Bickerstaff

your arm routine. One of the easiest things you can do is to change up the traditional biceps curl exercise is to simply change the hand position from palms up, palms facing in, or palms facing down along with performing this exercise with both arms together or in an alternating fashion. Instead of standing or sitting, try performing the dumbbell curl on an incline bench, adjusting the back to a 45-degree angle. Finally, if your gym has a cable pulley system, attach a cable straight bar to a low pulley and perform the biceps curls. A rope attached to the low pulley is also a great alternative.
