Wasaga Beach Fire Dept. Presented Polaris Rescue Vehicle
Photo shows Wasaga Beach Fire Chief Mike McWilliam with Rhonda Broderick of COATV and Mike Dunphy of Wasaga Beach Motorcycle Rally after the formal presentation of Polaris Rescue Vehicle.
We are very thankful and proud of our generous sponsors; COATV members/volunteers, Wasaga Beach Motorcycle Rally, Wasaga Beach Lions Club, Wasaga Beach Fish and Game Club, Starlite Graphics & Signs, Polaris, Beach Builders Home Hardware, J&R Cycle and all private donations who helped make the donation of the Polaris Rescue Vehicle to the Wasaga Beach Fire Department possible. The presentation took place at the Wasaga Beach Fire Hall Station 1 on February 18th, 2017. The Polaris rescue vehicle includes the following: a fully equipped ranger 900 XP EPS with a prospector pro tracks system, 6000 lbs winch, RK rescue skid unit with attendant seat (stretcher), an aluminum trailer and numerous other accessories. This package has a retail value of $41,000. Wasaga Beach is home to six Provincial Parks for Day Use and the World’s Longest Freshwater Beach. Many trails in the community are difficult to access for our firefighters in the event of an emergency. Having a vehicle available that can access remote or geographically challenging locations ensures the safety of people enjoying the outdoors. When the unfortunate scenario of an accident occurs, time is of the essence. The rescue vehicle provides an additional option for the Wasaga Beach Fire Department to provide emergency assistance. “80290 Rewind” with Alan Frew from Glass Tiger Who can remember “Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone”, “Someday” these are just some of the hits enjoyed in the 80's. I recently spoke to frontman, Alan Frew from Glass Tiger. Alan is a multi-platinum selling songwriter, public speaker and author of the best selling book “The Action Sandwich a Six Step Recipe to Success by Doing W h a t Yo u ' r e Already doing”. Alan's work with Glass Tiger has garnered him five Juno Awards, a Grammy nomination and five Canadian Classic Awards in recognition of songs played in excess of 100,000 times on Canadian radio. He has toured along side of Tina Turner, Fleetwood Mac, Rod Stewart to name a few. In 2008, Alan teamed up with Stephan Moccio and wrote the theme song “I Believe” for CTV's Canada's Olympic Broadcast Media for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Recovering from a stroke in 2015, Alan is moving forward with a musical come back. “I don't know that you suffer from this and you are ever as 100% again but I'm as close to 100% as you'll get. I went through a phase of you feel a little bit sorry for yourself and you have a bit of a cry and then you get to work in rehab. I worked really hard to get myself back in shape and here I am performing again,” said Frew. His latest album “80290 Rewind” released November 2015 on Black Box Records is a compilation of the 80's and 90's hits from that era. Forming part of this album are top players Matchbox Twenty guitarist, Kyle Cook, bass player, Dave Cook, his work includes Bill Joel, Fleetwood Mac and keyboard player, Jon Coleman known for working with some of Nashville's famous players. “My new management at the time, Jason from Black Box, we were just talking about what do you do when you're in your fifties and you have this voice that people know and recognized and hopefully love and wondering where you are. So we mulled a few ideas back and forth and he came up with the idea of doing classic songs from the 80's and I thought that's a cool idea. We sat back and brought up over 100 of them and weed some of them out and then you start to realize just how great some of these songs are.” Alan went to Nashville to record the album however when it came time to sing them he realized it was a little more difficult than he anticipated. “When it came time to singing them it was unbelievable difficult because you have to own them. You have to sing it, so much so that people can go on the journey with you like it's your song. They have to believe that it's actually me that wrote the song even though it wasn't. I think I managed to capture the essence of these wonderful songs.”
Daylight Saving Time arrives this weekend, requiring people to move their clocks ahead one hour before they go to bed on March 11 (or at 2 a.m. Sunday, March 12.) The time change shift moves more daylight into the evening hours. The idea of DST traces its roots back to Benjamin Franklin who was trying to figure out a way to use less candles. The actual time change practice was first used in World War I in an effort to conserve energy (longer daylight hours means less fuel burned for lamps.)
Facts to know on Daylight Saving Time The name is Daylight Saving Time - not Daylight Saving's Time or Daylight Savings Times. More than 70 countries and one-fifth of the world's 7 billion people follow DST Saskatchewan is geographically located in the Mountain Time Zone. However, most of the province observes Central Standard Time year-round. As a result, it is effectively on daylight saving time (DST) year round, as clocks are not turned back an hour in autumn. Arizona and Hawaii don't observe DST. Neither do China, India or Japan. Some studies suggest the loss of an hour of sleep as we move the clocks forward results in health problems, an increase in auto and workplace accidents and increased appetites. Studies also show workers are less productive in the Monday after the time change. This year's DST switch comes eight days ahead of the spring equinox on March 20 at 6:29 a.m. ET. Clocks will change back on Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017

TIPPING POINT Changing Wasaga Beach Lives
GARY CERANTOLA gary@beachBOOSTER.com
Community Vitality When my wife Eva and I decided to move to Wasaga Beach eight years ago, we were excited by the buzz that was going on in this community. The local information sources were streaming with all the things that were being planned. They painted a very bright future for Wasaga Beach. The friendliness of this community was awesome. The natural beauty of the Nottawasaga Bay butting up against the Niagara Escarpment and quality of life this area proved to be a strong motivator for us to buy a house and settle in this town. Mainly it’s jobs and economic opportunities that draw people to communities. In our case, it was quality of life and lifestyle that sparked our eagerness to move here. In today’s world, populations are more mobile than ever. Given the power of the internet and social media today, people looking for a community to settle in, have much more resources to tap into and can more carefully get a sense of fit to determine if a potential new area to move to has everything they are looking for. This means, communities must be savvy in the retention and attraction of people. In fact, if communities don’t inspire their citizens they run the risk of becoming failed communities. Beyond economic survival, there are important quality of life factors that can help communities improve themselves in areas that really matter. While such things as unemployment rates, income per capita and air quality are all important and available statistics, they do not always give a complete picture of the vitality of the community. Perceptions matter too. We can’t take our eye off the ball and must continue to keep the inspiration going. One of the main draws for people moving here that make up part of the growing creative economy movement are professionals that not only seek recreation opportunities but look for cultural opportunities to help balance their lifestyles. Having roots as a resort town, culture does not always seem to make it into every day conversations like swimming, fishing, and the like. It is important that we look further into the future and realize that culture can play a big role in attracting future residents that represent the demographics that we need to balance our population mix. These new demographic groups are also the type of people that are motivated to do more community building in our town to make our community more sustainable in every way prized by leading communities. Let’s not forget that cultural initiatives can be a big part of this solution. Let’s embrace the Wasaga Society for the Arts tagline; "Let Creativity Flow" “Be The Beach”, send me your thoughts and comments at Gary@beachBOOSTER.com. Your efforts count in making this community the preferred place in which to live, learn, work and play. Gary is a YB12 Coach and Business Advisor for Critel Professional Services, www.critel.ca, and lives, learns, works and plays in Wasaga Beach.
