World Diabetes Day - November 14 World Diabetes Day was created by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1991, in response to concern over the escalating incidence of diabetes around the world.

World Diabetes Day is a global event. It brings together millions of people in 160 countries to raise awareness of diabetes, including children and adults affected by diabetes, healthcare professionals, healthcare decision-makers and the media. World Diabetes Day unites the global diabetes community to produce a powerful voice for diabetes awareness. World Diabetes Day is celebrated every year on November 14. The date was chosen because it marks the birthday of Canadian Sir Frederick G. Banting, who, along with Charles Best, is credited with the discovery of insulin in 1921.

In 2010, Beach BOOSTER Group was proud to organize and present this first ever event in Wasaga Beach. With community help from several businesses and many Wasaga Beach residents, we succeeded in adding Wasaga Beach to an international list of communities that lit landmarks BLUE for this annual event on November 14th.

Our Wasaga Dome was shown glowing BLUE on the international web site and generated positive awareness of Wasaga Beach and our participation in this international initiative.

The following year, Beach BOOSTER received permission from Ontario Parks for the lighting of the Theatre Building on our Historic Nancy Island.

Again, we were pleased with the support we received from the community to light this great Wasaga Beach landmark for World Diabetes Day, 2011!

Beach BOOSTER will recognize World Diabetes Day in Wasaga Beach for 2012! We are again working with Ontario Parks and The Town of Wasaga Beach to light the Theatre on Nancy Island BLUE. In order to make this year’s event on November 14 more memorable, we are eager to get even more of the community engaged in this international initiative. We are pleased to be hosting a PREWorld Diabetes Day Event on Saturday November 10. We ask the residents of Wasaga Beach to join us in a fun afternoon with great entertainment and purchase a personal BLUE LED Globe to bring to our event on World Diabetes Day. With community involvement, Wasaga Beach’s Main Street Blue Bridge will glow BLUEwith the many lit globes brought to our event… while the spectacle of the BLUE lights on Nancy Island reflects upon the river. A portion of the purchase price of each Globe will go to the Canadian Diabetes Association.

We hope to again create a great, truly local visual experience for all who visit us on our Main Street Bridge this November 14th and for a third year, help create more awareness for World Diabetes Day, while promoting Wasaga Beach in a positive way on the World Stage!

Wasaga Beach Remembrance Day Ceremony to be held Sunday, November 4th The Remembrance Day Ceremonies begin at 2 p.m. and will form up at the O.P.P. parking lot and march to the Cenotaph located at the Municipal Administration Office, 30 Lewis Street, where our Remembrance Day Service will then be held. Following the Remembrance Day Service, please join Veterans, participants and residents for refreshments at the Wasaga Stars Arena. For more info call 705-429-3844 ext. 2224

Stayner Remembrance Day Ceremony to be held Sunday, November 11th There will be a new twist this year to the service in Stayner on Sunday November 11th. A military dais will be erected on Main Street at the Station Park. This saluting base will include an officer from Base Maintenance EME Branch, CFB Borden, Clearview Mayor Ken Ferguson and Branch 457 sergeant-at-arms, comrade Kevin Keogh. Legion Members are encouraged to form up at 10:30 a.m. at Station Park on Main Street. They will then march to our cenotaph located in front of the Clearview Administration Centre for the service. Local dignitaries, legion members and other individuals and organizations will then lay wreaths of remembrance. Following the service they will march up Main Street, east towards Station Park for the salute and continue on to our branch for another small wreath laying ceremony. Members of the service and general public are then invited inside to warm up, enjoy some lunch and fun and fellowship at our branch. Tickets are now on sale for the official Remembrance Day Dinner. Sunday Nov. 11, starting at 7 p.m., to held at the branch, only $15 per person. This is always a very nice evening of food, comradeship and remembrance. Wasaga Beach Gaming Opportunity in Wasaga Beach Businesses and all residents of Wasaga Beach need to stand up in support of the opportunity of bringing gaming to our town!

Every community needs some type of industry, to sustain a stable tax base in order to provide the much needed services that residents depend on, in order to enjoy the lifestyle they seek in our town. For over 100 years Wasaga Beach's only industry has been tourism, although it's been neglected in recent years to the point where, although this past summer gave us beautiful weather, most of our visitors were simply day trippers who did not provide the necessary support for our local economy.

All in our community must take responsibility for assisting our struggling local economy… or, if not, decide what other industry we should encourage and support as tourism will die here without action! As far as ecologically friendly industries go, tourism is certainly a good way to go and I think we should embrace it, nurture it and encourage its rebound here in The Beach!

Personally, I feel a stand alone “casino” is not something that would assist in the rebound of our all important industry, but certainly the opportunity to add gaming to a complete, family friendly development is something that would make Wasaga Beach unique! International developers, who specialize in the type of Entertainment Complex that caters to families by offering many different activities, would see gaming as a small… but important component in the entire project!

Looking at gaming as simply a component of the big picture dilutes the image of a morally wrong concept and converts it to an image of family fun, entertainment and excitement.

(Ironically, the same image that so many remember fondly from the glory days of family fun at Wasaga Beach) I ask all to help boost our local economy by welcoming new and creative ideas that will bring people Back to The Beach.

We cannot say no to an opportunity of gaming in our town!

We must encourage it as a part of what we really do need to bring our industry back from the brink. An opportunity to include a small gaming component to the big picture needs to be promoted to any builder and/or developer who may be interested in bringing family friendly entertainment back to Wasaga Beach!

Pillsbury Dough Boy Dead at 71. Funeral at 350 for about 20 minutes Please join in remembering a great icon of the entertainment community. The Pillsbury Dough boy died yesterday of a yeast infection and trauma complications from repeated pokes in the belly. He was 71.

Dough boy was buried in a lightly greased coffin. Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, the California Raisins, Betty Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies, and Captain Crunch. The grave site was piled high with flours. Most of them were from Cathy's Flour & Gift Boutique in Wasaga Bake.

Aunt Jemima Delivers Eulogy Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Dough boy as a man who never knew how much he was kneaded. Dough boy rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers. He was considered a very smart cookie, but wasted much of his dough on half-baked schemes. Despite being a little flaky at times, he still was a crusty old man and was considered a positive roll model for millions.

Dough boy is survived by his wife Play Dough, three children: John Dough, Jane Dough and Dosey Dough, plus they had one in the oven. He is also survived by his elderly father, Pop Tart.

The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes. Since we try to keep all articles in Beach BOOSTER very positive, we’re going to wait three days to see if everything pans out.

This month we have invited Shannon Gale, to speak to us about the South Georgian Bay Community Health Centre’s Health Promotion Programs. She will be talking about the background of this (new) health centre and their health promotion programs (Diabetes Education, quitting smoking groups, nutrition groups, fitness for health, mental health groups, inc depression, anxiety groups, etc.) that are free and available to everyone in our community.

The South Georgian Bay Community Health Centre (CHC) has been in full operation in our community for over a year now. The CHC is a non-profit organization providing health and wellness services to the residents of Blue Mountains, Clearview Township, Wasaga Beach, Collingwood and Elmvale. Our Vision is to be the Healthiest Community in Canada. We intend to do that through: Health promotion, Illness prevention, and Comprehensive client-centered primary healthcare.

The CHC team includes physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, a social worker, a mental health and addiction counsellor, a diabetes educator, a dietician, a physiotherapist, a health promoter and administrative staff. Our clients access our services at our centre at 14 Ramblewood Drive, Wasaga Beach and we also take our Health Promotion programs out into our community.

The Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Breakfast Committee are delighted to welcome Shannon as our speaker and invite you all to an informative talk about the available (and free) health programs in Wasaga Beach. This year's theme for Crime Prevention Week is “Engaged Communities Prevent Crime”. Crime prevention starts with each of us and taking control of our own safety reduces victimization. As Fall quickly moves to Winter, so do we see the decline of sunlight on our streets in the early evening hours. Although there may be a reduction of sunlight we still see people enjoying our community by walking, riding bicycles or skateboarding along our streets to various destinations. As such I would like to offer several safety tips to both our pedestrian and motoring friends.

Walkers, Cyclists and others: Be Seen – wear reflective clothing, light coloured clothing, consider carrying a flashlight to light your way Cyclists – your bicycle is a vehicle, it is required to have proper lighting and reflective material on it both front and back Plan Your Journey – Ensure the street or trail you take to get to your destination is well lit and is clear to travel. ·When walking along streets/roads, walking facing traffic. ·When cycling along streets/roads, ride with traffic.

Be Aware – of other uses of the road you are on, whether they be motorized or not.

Be Predictable – as non motorized users, when walking or riding do so in a predicable safe and legal manner. Walk facing traffic not with or in a wandering manner. Cycle with traffic, not against and obey the rules of the road.

Share our streets – as non motorized users on our streets respect our motorized users.

Motorists: Your Speed – travel at the posted speed limit, not above, reduce your speed with regards to the weather and road conditions Expect the Unexpected – expect to see walkers and cyclists sharing our streets with you The 2 Cs – Be Cautious and Courteous when approaching walkers and cyclists. Take care when passing these other users; the time you take to do this carefully is insignificant compared to your whole journey.

Share our streets – as motorized users on our streets respect our non motorized users Both non motorized and motorized users have their places on our highway. The Challenge is to have both groups use our streets safety.

WBWBA's Successfully Speaking event took place October 2nd and this year Five Time Canadian Comedy Award Nominee Keynote Speaker Kate Davis graced our stage at Country Life Banquet Hall where she brought an evening of laughter to Wasaga Beach.

Davis entertained us for several hours about balancing life with humour. Davis is a speaker, writer, comedian and actress as well as a mom.

She finds humour in any situation and offer creative solutions to defuse frustrations in the home and workplace.

Davis met her destiny when she began speaking about bringing a sense of humour into the home, the workplace and ultimately the balance of both.

Davis has the unique ability to find humour in any situation and offers creative solutions to defuse frustrations in the home and workplace.

Kate found her passion one night at a local comedy club. Now, a five-time nominee at the Canadian Comedy Awards and star of her own hour-long comedy special on CTV and the Comedy Network , Davis appeared on Breakfast Television, Star TV, Toronto 1, Prime, WTN, CBC Radio One The Debaters and The Mom Show.

Davis successful parenting humour workshops have led to full range of presentations, exploring the positive effects humour has on all aspects of life. From the corporate world to the bedtime story, Davis vision reveals how humour can be utilized throughout our lives. Davis states: “We are all jugglers and the first ball to drop is usually our own”.

Between our jobs, home, relationships with family, friends and co-workers learning how to balance our busy life demands a strong sense of Personal Development and most importantly a Sense of Humour. " Fun cancels out stress and brings everyone into the moment." Everything changes when we become parents. Davis states: “Your leisure time should not be folding laundry”. I totally agree! I especially enjoyed her quote when she said: “I think the show "Survivor" shouldn't take place on an island but a new parents' home. It's challenging not losing yourself in the process but with a few techniques likes being more playful and using your intuition life can be more joyful and relaxing.”

During her show, Davis recruited some comedians in our audience and Sandy Smardenka from Boston Pizza and Phyllis Cooke from Make Great Wine agreed to take the stage to perform a comedy act under the direction of Davis. They both did a great a job! I think Davis was quite surprised how well they performed!! Two men in the audience spoke little English and Davis didn't hesitate to humour them along with her act. She also humoured how British people are usually so calm no matter how stressful the situation may be.

Everyone laughed throughout the two-hour show.

Davis was well received by our Wasaga Beach residents and she looks forward to visiting our beautiful Georgian Bay again in the near future.

Wasaga Beach Gaming Facility - Scenario Planning 101 I have been following the public consultation process and the social media conversations about “should we” or “should we not” have a gaming facility in Wasaga Beach. We witnessed full house attendance at the Wasaga Beach RecPlex meetings and listened to passionate discussions from both sides that put forth well thought out arguments supporting the pros and cons for making a decision.

If I was to apply scenario planning from my days in corporate planning here’s how you could frame the analysis. In scenario planning there’s really three things you consider; known(s), unknown(s) and pre-determined(s). You then pick two or three plausible scenarios applying appropriate known(s), unknowns and pre-determined(s) to consider and see what falls out. At the end of the day it’s the broad authentic discussions you have amongst all of the stakeholders that makes up the most important part of the scenario planning exercise. These discussions generate insights and wisdom to collectively help all parties get on the same page to manage the scenario outcome possibilities in a responsible way honouring the principles adopted by the community.

So what are the known(s)?

A commercial development investment pays taxes. A facility of 300 slots will create about 90 to 100 good paying jobs.

Housing prices are cheaper overall in Wasaga Beach than say Collingwood to house service workers to work in such a facility. Taxes and revenues will be able to go towards more and or better infrastructure and services for our town. OLG research concludes that Zone C7 making up the four municipalities can viably sustain 300 slot machines. Wasaga Beach is an optimum geographical focal point location for a gaming facility in the Zone C7 area.

So what are the unknown(s)?

We don’t know what the social impact will be. We don’t know how successful the facility could be. We don’t know who the operator will be and we don’t know where the facility will be located yet and how it will impact Wasaga Beach residents and businesses. We have no idea about what externalities can affect our community or the local economy over the next economic horizon.

So what are the pre-determined(s)?

Good comprehensive planning results in good outcomes. The more commercial base we have for taxes lessens the burden we have on residential taxes. Development investments create jobs. More jobs grow the economy. A stronger economy supports more development investments. More developments support the creation of additional and more competitive services. A strong sustainable economy attracts more businesses and professionals to move to our community. This creates the conditions to build brand hotels, restaurants, a movie theatre, a bowling alley, meetings and gathering centres, an arts and music centre, more medical and health facilities, improve transportation and attract more doctors, etc.

Responsible and concerned communities that help families have more resources to ensure we have the agencies and capacity to help our residents maintain physical and psychological health.

So now let’s run a few scenarios and look at what outcomes we can aspire towards and what measures we have to put in place to secure a promising future.

The Farmer’s Revolt On October 21st, 1919, the farmers of Ontario threw out the ruling Conservative government of Sir William Hearst. In one of the greatest political upsets in Canadian history, the sons of the soil were swept into power at Queen’s Park. Throughout the province, members of the United Farmers of Ontario gathered to celebrate their unexpected victory.

Indeed, many of the leaders of the United Farmers were from Georgian Bay. Long a stronghold of agrarian political protest, the area’s numerous farmers stood four-square against booze, for the Crown, and against freetrade with the Americans. The Great War was over and thousands of local farm boys were buried in the vast graveyards of France. The Spanish influenza was raging through the Province as voters went to the polls in a provincial election.

The United Farm movement had been born in 1914, the first year of the War. Rural Ontario was up-in-arms over the issue of reciprocity with the United States. A proposed free trade act with the Americans was seen as a betrayal of Canada’s British heritage. But that wasn’t all.

In the last year of the War, the government went back on its pledge not to conscript the sons of farmers for overseas duty. Rural rage followed.

The United Farmers organization had been formed in a Toronto ballroom. Intended to replace earlier but worn-out organizations such as the Dominion Grange and Farmer’s Alliance, it had more than its share of Georgian Bay men. Chief among them was Ernest Charles Drury, a Simcoe County farmer. When the dust of the election had settled, Drury was Ontario’s new premier.

Wasaga Beach Lions upcoming 50th Anniversary It is hard to believe that we are coming up to our 50th year serving our community. We are going to give you a “looking back at the past” for you to see and imagine what impact we have made in this town.

1963 The Lions Club of Wasaga was actually started in February of 1963 as a Business Men's Group by the Reverend Donald French, rector of the Church of the Prince of Peace as an ultimate means of increasing church membership.

The first members were Sidney Martin, Morris Bent, Stanley Piltcher and the Reverend Don. At the second meeting each man brought a friend. At the next meeting each man again brought a friend and so on.

The fellowship rapidly caught on and before long a large group of men was meeting at the church each week. Of course, the men were of many different faiths and although all were broad minded, they could hardly become Anglican Church members.

The Reverend Don French realizing the great potential force for good that these men represented, suggested they become a Lions Club, and being from Stayner, invited a Stayner Lion Jack Carroll to speak to them.

In the following weeks, Lions from other clubs, visited and explained the goals of Lionism, and subsequently was formed the Wasaga-Oakview Lions Club with Sidney Martin becoming the first president in May 1963.

Upon the annexation of Oakview Beach by Wasaga Beach from the town of Sunnidale, the Oakview part of the name was dropped, and the name Wasaga Beach Lions Club was adopted.

Through the hard work and grassroots advocacy of many Lions, the "Lions Clubs International Century of Service Commemorative Coin Act," S. 1299/H.R. 2139 achieved 295 sponsors and co-sponsors in the U.S. House of Representatives and 70 sponsors and co-sponsors in the U.S. Senate before its passage by Congress. President Barack Obama signed the Lions Clubs International Century of Service Commemorative Coin Act into law on October 5, 2012!

by Joe Bickerstaff This regular feature in beach BOOSTER usually goes way back in years to look at local buildings, businesses and traditions, but this issue I’m looking back just three short years!

I like to think that three Novembers ago, Beach BOOSTER Group, with the help of many, created a lasting, annual tradition for Wasaga Beach that will be recognized by all who live here and also around the world.

November 14 is recognized as World Diabetes Day and to create public awareness, communities around the world light structures BLUE for this one day. In early November 2010, Bill Frieday of Beach BOOSTER Group said aloud, “Why does Wasaga Beach not light a local structure BLUE for World Diabetes Day?” Well.... that was all it took to set the Beach BOOSTER wheels in motion! A The Dome -2011 visit to Town Hall, although they were very supportive... made us aware that much more “lead time” was required to get “official Town support”, so we were on our own... so we thought!

After considering several local structures, Bill and I thought the well known and visible Wasaga Dome on the beach would be a great structure to light BLUE for this event. With one phone call, Dome owner Nick Vidinovski met us at the Dome site with keys in hand and offered us his building, his hydro and all of his support!

Instant support from Chris Sarabura of Reflective Solutions meant that we had the all important lighting looked after. 97.7 The Beach jumped in to offer instant promotion and Boston Pizza and Tim Hortons came on board to provide hot snacks and refreshments for the event. Wow! Bill and I were going to try and make this a first for Wasaga Beach!

It was a very cold and windy November night on the beachfront, Chris and Crew of Reflective Solutions but we were pleased to be with friends, good music, warm food and drink and the constant stream of local Wasaga Beach folks coming by to view the spectacle of the Wasaga Dome lit BLUE was very rewarding!

Last year we worked with Ontario Parks and The Town of Wasaga Beach to once again add Wasaga Beach to the long list of International structures lit BLUE for World Diabetes Day, as we lit the Theatre Building on our historic Nancy Island Blue! It created a marvellous sight from our Main Street Bridge, looking up river at the structure and its reflection on the river. The view was commented upon from people around the world who viewed the photos on the International World Diabetes Site!

This year Beach BOOSTER is very pleased to continue the tradition and we hope all in The Beach will come down to participate in this year’s event. We will be viewed by The World as Theatre Building on Nancy Island - 2011 all photos and videos will be posted on the International site! We have added a new component to further engage the public, so please see the details of our PRE-World Diabetes Day Event on our front page and the poster in this publication. Randy Rennie A familiar face around town and certainly a welcome sight for anyone in The Beach with “plumbing problems”, is Randy Rennie.

Randy hails from Eastern Ontario but when he answered an ad looking for an experienced plumber almost 15 years ago, he was immediately hired by John McTavish Plumbing here in The Beach… and that’s when he decided to make Wasaga Beach his home.

Randy and John McTavish shared the same philosophy of customer service and John’s long time customers appreciated Randy’s expertise and professionalism. Randy fell in love with Wasaga Beach and its people as he continued to make customers happy with his services.
