Point of View Every community has traditions and lasting traditions add to the spirit and uniqueness of that community. Although Wasaga Beach is a young town, we have a long and rich history. Traditions have started and this helps in bringing us all together as one community. During the winter months we look forward to seasonal events like the annual Santa Clause Parade, Breakfast with Santa and Funderland. February brings us Snowman Mania, our own Winter Carnival that brightens our winter moods. The great Easter Eggstravaganza is a much appreciated taste of spring and of course the Canada Day celebrations at Stonebridge Town Centre have given us our own patriotic annual event. These are just a few of the many events that will hopefully become lasting Wasaga Beach traditions, where memories will be made and visitors and other communities will see and hear the spirit of Wasaga Beach and its people. It is with this is mind, that Beach BOOSTER Group continues to create, develop and present some truly local and unique events that perhaps too will become recognized as Wasaga Beach traditions, by not only our local residents... but by all who visit, enjoy or even just hear of them from a far. On Wednesday, November 14, Beach BOOSTER Group, with the help of many valued sponsors and supporters, presented a truly local and unique event, adding Wasaga Beach to the long list of communities lighting local structures BLUE in recognition of World Diabetes Day! This was our third year organizing and presenting this World Diabetes Day event and we certainly hope to continue and make this an annual local tradition. Firstly, we are eager to help bring awareness to this very important health issue, but also knew our event would bring positive international recognition to Wasaga Beach and its people! Beach BOOSTER's mandate has always been and will continue to be, promoting The Beach, its industry and businesses in a positive way! We truly thank the many who sponsored and supported our efforts in presenting World Diabetes Day 2012 in Wasaga Beach! Our beautiful Theatre Building on Historic Nancy Island is being seen around the world, as is our local recognition of this special day. Joe Bickerstaff

Presenting Good Job Bouquet & Certificate to Susy & Enrique are Beach BOOSTER Joe Bickerstaff & Cathy Holland-Hendry of Cathy’s Flower & Boutique. The presentation took place on the Main Street “Blue” Bridge on World Diabetes Day..Photo was taken by Beach BOOSTER Bill Frieday with Enrique’s camera.
Beach BOOSTER has presented Susy & Enrique Miranda with Good Job Bouquet for their outstanding contribution to the every day life of Wasaga Beach. Susy & Enrique are usually seen together at local Wasaga Beach events taking photographs which become part of the history of our wonderful town. A self-taught photographer they established their business in 1998 after Enrique graduated from Humber turning his hobby and passion into a commercial venture. Susy handles the business and marketing part of Enrique Photo Art. Enrique specializes in floral and landscape photography, but he also captures wonderful wildlife, stop-action sports, interesting photo studies of personalities and weddings. It is without a doubt that Wasaga Beach is Enrique's favorite for finding photographic sources and inspiration. Originally from Chile the family moved to Toronto in 1974, visiting Wasaga Beach often and then finally moving here in 2005. Susy says “Wasaga Beach is a great place to live, work and play not to mention the spectacular sunsets, we had vacationed in the area years before and kept coming back until we moved from Etobicoke in 2005.”

NOVEMBER SPECIAL
17 REFILLS $40.00 (28 FOR 11l JUGS)
Winter Driving Safety Tips As November goes into December the temperature gets colder the daylight lessens and weather and road conditions can change quickly on your drive to and from work. Between the December 1, 2011 and February 29, 2012 the Huronia West OPP responded to over 400 motor vehicle collisions many of those collisions may were due to motorists driving too fast and not driving according to the conditions. Please remember that operating a motor vehicle is a privilege not a right. As drivers you are responsible for your driving actions in both good and bad weather, here are some winter driving safety tips in hopes of keeping you out of the ditch and/or avoiding that collision; 1)Never drink and drive 2)Ways wear your seat belt 3)Know the road and weather conditions before you start your journey 4)Ensure your motor vehicle is ready for the winter; a.Are all your fluids topped up? b.Are your tires fit for winter driving? Snow tires are better. c.Is your motor vehicle mechanically fit? 5)Clean the snow and ice off your motor vehicle, this does not mean a tiny hole cleaned in the windshield, clean the whole vehicle including the roof. 6)Slow down 7)Leave more space between you and the vehicle in front of you 8)Have an emergency kit that includes; a.Working cellular telephone b.Blanket c.Water d.Non-perishable easily consumed food (ex. Chocolate bar) e.Extra hats, gloves, warm clothing f.First Aid Kit g.For more items to have please see, Simcoe County web site (http://www.simcoe.ca/ws_cos/groups/public/@pubcos-em/documents/web_content/wscos_003433.pdf) 9)If you do have a collision, stay calm, check to see if anyone is injured, if someone is seriously injured call “911” if there is only damage to the vehicles call your local Police Service, if OPP then 1-888-310-1122 to report. 10)If you are in a collision, do not walk around the collision scene remain in your vehicle with your seat belt on and call Police. 11)If the weather and road conditions are bad, don't not call your local Police Service to ask for conditions doing so ties up valuable resources that are needed to respond to the bad conditions. Instead listen to your local radio and television stations or check the weather conditions on the internet. Also the Ministry of Transportation provides Travellers' Road Information at 1-800-268-4686 or at: www.ontario.ca/winterdriving and scroll down to “Provincial Highway Information” For more information of Safe Winter Driving: http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/safety/winterdrive/win terdrive.pdf http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/safety/winterdrive/win ter-safe-driving-en-2012.pdf http://www.caasco.com/Auto/Auto-Maintenance/WinterDriving-Guide-Tips.aspx http://www.simcoe.ca/ws_cos/groups/public/@pubcos-ccd/documents/web_content/wscos_007847.pdf

I took my Dad to the Georgian Mall the other day to buy some new shoes (he is 66.) We decided to grab a bite at the food court. I noticed he was watching a teenager sitting next to him…The teenager had spiked hair in all different colours – green, red, orange and blue. My Dad kept staring at her. The teenager kept looking and would find my Dad staring every time. When the teenager had had enough, she asked sarcastically: “What's the matter old man, never done anything wild in your life?” Knowing my Dad, I quickly swallowed my food so that I would not choke on his response; I knew he would have a good one! In classic style he responded without batting an eyelid…“Got absolutely stoned once and had an affair with a parrot. Just wondering if you were my daughter.”

Barrie Film Festival This year's After Party of the Barrie Film Festival hosted by the BMW Dealership on Essa Road, was held recently . As I sit on the committee of the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival. I thought it would be a good opportunity to network and promote our upcoming film festival by attending. The theme for the party was Disco aka Studio 54. I couldn't imagine how the BMW showroom could be transformed into a nightclub. Once I got there, the dealership looked amazing, complete with disco balls, mannequins in sequin dresses throughout the showroom floor, a DJ dressed in his disco attire and Afro hairdo, two disco dancers in their spandex and glittery tops dancing to the tunes of that famous disco era. It was a fun evening of dance, delicious food and mingling with film buffs. I met Julinda Morrow, Film Programmer and Guest Relations Coordinator, who helped coordinate my interview with Claudine Benoit, Director of the Film Festival. “We decided to go over the top,” said Julinda Morrow, BFF's feature film programmer. “There's something in there for everyone some world/gala international premieres.” The BFF, a non-profit organization, is in its 15th year. It has grown from a three-day weekend into a ten-day celebration of film. This year, all featured screenings took place at the Uptown Theatre formerly the Imperial on Dunlop Street. BFF also presented a Short Film Competition, where emerging and established filmmakers had the opportunity to share their work. According to Benoit, submissions have doubled from last year. The chosen finalists selected by their jury panel were presented,, followed by the awards ceremony and a highspirited Filmmakers' Party to celebrate the buzz. At the party, I had the opportunity to sit down with Claudine Benoit for an interview for Beach Corner. Claudine explained this year's festival added five more films than in previous year. I also asked Benoit if she could provide any advice for our own upcoming film festival in Wasaga Beach “Don't go too fast make sure you have people to support you on the committee to help grow and take it one step at a time”. If you enjoy films, I would encourage you to attend the BFF and the many films they offer each year. Until then, I look forward to seeing you at our 2nd Annual Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival (WBSFF), Saturday, January 26th, 2013. Come and encourage our own grass root filmmakers. Beach Corner is sponsored by the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival. Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival- What’s in it for Wasaga Businesses? The Toronto International Film Festival known as TIFF was pegged at bringing in $200 Million in economic benefits for Toronto in 2012. Management Consultants and Cormex Research looked at the 2008-2009 year, when TIFF’s impact to Toronto’s economy was approximately $170 million. Out-of-town visitors spent a total of $27 million during 2008’s festival. In all, TIFF’s year-round activities and the construction of the Lightbox generated $60 million in tax revenue and provided full-time employment to 2,300 Ontarians. Like any other film festival, TIFF had meagre beginnings in 1976 and now is only second in world standing to the Cannes Film Festival. Here’s the good news….TIFF is getting so renowned, it is becoming more and more difficult for new independent film makers to break into the list of participants while TIFF is shifting its focus somewhat to Hollywood. So much so, that Shaun Goldsmith, Hamilton film producer, who will be presenting an award at our Second Annual Wasaga Beach Short Film festival, says the Hamilton Film Festival is catching the TIFF spin off and growing accordingly. Shaun also says that costs are higher and film resources are more at a premium in Toronto, causing a migration of filmmakers to Hamilton to take advantage of lower costs in location and film production talent. Think of it…….Once the Wasaga Beach Film Festival gains critical mass there will be a plethora of film people clamouring to come to Wasaga Beach for its great quality of life, spectacular scenery and low costs in filming locations and filming production. Is this a pipe dream? Did the people of TIFF ever think they would be competing with Cannes? Dare to dream Wasagians, dare to dream. A film industry in our part of the world could become a reality and provide a shot in the arm to our tourism industry not to mention make it an interesting place to live and play for all of us year round residents, cottagers and visitors. In the short horizon, the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival (WBSFF) will have enough films to show outdoor under the stars (with our outdoor viewing equipment soon to become a reality) to our residents and visitors and leverage the WBSFF video advertisements film category of entrants who will get broad free advertising for Wasaga Beach and their businesses at our viewings and through the WBSFF You Tube® Channel. Did I mention that to enter the film festival as a submitter of film or video is free? Did I also mention that we have two Music Video submissions this year that will attract a whole new segment to our film festival? Check out the festival through the website, www.wasagafilmfestival.ca. Mark your calendars. You Tube® voting for our second annual film and video submissions is scheduled to start November 30, 2012 and our public viewing and voting and Awards Gala is scheduled for January 26, 2013. Beach Booster is certainly here to help the WBSFF on its way. See you at the Awards Gala! Send me your thoughts. Please email me at Gary@beachbooster.com
Richard McGuire: The First Settler What was once the Township of Collingwood, now the Town of the Blue Mountains, was surveyed in 1833, long before the rest of Grey County was mapped and plotted. The oldest, settled portion of the County, it received its first residents in 1834 when the Queen’s Surveyor, Charles Rankin, built a log cabin at Rankin’s Landing, now Lora Bay. Rankin planted potatoes, harvesting them in the fall. Although he didn’t settle permanently at Lora Bay, Rankin used his humble cabin as a base for his ongoing survey of Grey. The first true settler in Collingwood Township was Richard McGuire. Accompanied by his wife and children, he started out from the Village of Consecon (con-see-con) in Prince Edward County on the shores of Lake Ontario. Driving a yoke of oxen and two cows, the McGuire family pushed north through the summer months, destined for the newly opened Clergy Reserve lands of Collingwood Township. Fall found the McGuires near Lake Simcoe. There, Richard left the McGuire family to winter with a farm family while he went on ahead to locate their new farm. His route took him across the Nine Mile Portage from Barrie to Willow Creek where the remains of a supply depot used by the British during the War of 1812 still stood. Travelling next by canoe down Willow Creek into the Nottawasaga River to Georgian Bay, Richard paddled the south shore of Georgian Bay to Rankin’s landing. After locating his land on Concession 11, he returned the next spring to Lake Simcoe where he brought his family and stock along the Sunnidale Road to Georgian Bay and then along a trail to the new township. There, Richard and his wife had a son named Charles. Born in 1837, Charles McGuire was the first white child to be born in Collingwood Township. Today, his descendents still live among the Blue Mountains.

Wasaga Beach Lions Support World Diabetes Day November 14 The day aims to increase an awareness of the effects of diabetes and its complications amongst the general population and professionals in a range of sectors. Diabetes awareness was adopted as a long-term commitment of the Lions Clubs International in March 1984. The Lions' work in this area supports diabetes education, prevention, control and research. A primary objective of the program is to reduce the number of new cases of blindness caused by Diabetic Retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy is a condition occurring in persons with diabetes, which causes progressive damage to the retina, the light sensitive lining at the back of the eye. It is a serious sight-threatening complication of diabetes. The longer a person has diabetes, the more likely they will develop diabetic retinopathy. If left untreated, diabetic retinopathy can cause blindness.

Barrie Concert Band Presents "Christmas at the Beach”
The Way Wasaga Was by Joe Bickerstaff With the sunlight shining across beautiful Nottawasaga Bay, she can be seen still standing tall with the Blue Mountains as a back drop. Wasaga Beach often has a great view of our famous Nottawasaga Lighthouse. The Nottawasaga Lighthouse was constructed on Nottawasaga Island, just west of the current Collingwood Harbour in 1858, as one of the six Imperial Tower Lighthouses built to guide the important shipping traffic in Georgian Bay. Ships were the major method of transporting goods and people from place to place and to the rail lines to Southern Ontario. The importance of safe travel on Nottawasaga Bay made our Nottawasaga Lighthouse one of the most important navigational aids on the Great Lakes. This remaining Imperial Tower we can call our own, is 85 feet tall, with an exterior of dolomite limestone, topped with granite to support the heavy cast-iron lantern room at its top. The walls of this tower are 7 feet thick at its base, tapering to 2 feet at the peak. The interior diameter remains a constant 10’ 6” from top to bottom. There were many noteworthy Lighthouse Keepers who lived on the island and kept the light lit through all kinds of conditions, to guide traffic in southern Georgian Bay. The first keeper of our Nottawasaga Lighthouse was George Collins who held the post of keeper for 32 years! He is credited with saving 52 lives while he maintained the light. Most notably, 24 lives were saved from the grounding of the passenger steamer The Mary Ward during a violent Georgian Bay storm in 1872. In 1958 the Lighthouse Keeper’s residence was torn down and the light atop the tower was automated. In the last few years of visible light, it was solar powered. In 2003 the Federal Government (Canadian Coast Guard) announced it would no longer maintain our Lighthouse. With no maintenance and lack of public interest in this historic Georgian Bay icon, a web of cracks began to appear in the tower’s exterior in 2002. Moisture seeped into the rubblestone interior and the cycle of freezing and thawing, as well as several lightning strikes, took their toll. In 2004 the inevitable happened and as a result of neglect, part of the north-west wall of the tower crumbled and slid away, exposing the rubblestone core. In 2005, the Department of Oceans and Fisheries offered funds to try and prevent further damage, but not to repair! Many problems were discovered and bad weather hampered the efforts. 40% of the allotted funds were consumed simply transporting the materials from the mainland to the island. As a simple and relatively inexpensive attempt to help save the tower, the exposed pours core was sealed to reduce further penetration of moisture and wooden blocks and metal reinforcing bands were strapped around the tower. These bands are still helping support our lonely lighthouse. Although this important part of the history of Southern Georgian Bay remains neglected and perhaps forgotten, she still strains to stand against the elements. The same elements she proudly projected a guiding light through for so many years. Without further intervention and help from local communities, perhaps our local lighthouse will simply give up and be destroyed by one of our Georgian Bay storms... the same type of storm that she has braved for over 150 years.
