Family Day Weekend

February 15 - 18, 2013 www.snowmanmania.com 2nd Annual Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival Kenny Edwards 16, Big Winner Beach Corner by Dianna Chycki It was a spectacular event at our 2nd Annual WBSFF. The day started with our two viewings in Hall 1 “A” hosted by John Nichols, former morning radio personality for The Peak 95.1 FM, allowed viewers to take in all the films and vote for their favourites. Between the showings, viewers were entertained by several dance numbers provided by Wasaga Beach “The Dance Room” and “Dance By Design” dance companies with additional performances from Tyler Firestone and Fire & Sound. The event brought the Wasaga Beach Artists Group together to display their work in an impressive atmosphere of appreciation and excitement. FaceArt of Wasaga Beach created a body painting exhibit called “Nature In The Best of Times” featuring the art of Xan Lazaridis modeled by Maille (Moly). The Red Carpet Gala Awards took place in the Oakview Room where a tribute to Roy Wilson, our Town Crier was made by Bill Frieday of Beach BOOSTER Group. The festival entry films were aired to a full house followed by an awards and recognition ceremony. Presentations to our Mayor Cal Patterson and Denise Potter, Vice-President of the Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce of our official copies of the Second Annual WBSFF Poster. Gary Cerantola, Chair of the WBSFF, took the opportunity to announce some partnership agreements between the WBSFF and Switch Video of Collingwood and Henry's Photo Video Digital of Barrie, Ontario to develop training workshops to help Wasaga Beach businesses as Advertising Video Entrants for the Third Annual WBSFF. “Just think” said Gary Cerantola, “if we have 50 businesses in Wasaga Beach that take up the training workshops and produce a video advertisement entry for the third annual WBSFF they will improve their business focus and can you imagine the buzz that would be created on You Tube for Wasaga Beach featuring its businesses and the great attractions our community has to offer, with the world as Winner of 4 Awards Kenny Edwards Photo by Enrique Photo Art their audience!” Gary Cerantola, a resident of Wasaga Beach and Chair of WBSFF hosted the event and connected his vision of “Think Sundance North”. Our big winner of the night was 16 year-old, Kenny Edwards, student from Stratford, Ontario, who collected all four awards. His interest in both military and history and filmmaking made him the top winner of the film festival. Kenny was nominated in all four categories and won: Music Video - Platinum Award sponsored by the Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce, for “Wake Me Up When September Ends” Video Ad Platinum Award sponsored by Petals in Thyme, for “Wasaga Under Siege”. Action/Comedy - Gold Award sponsored by Century 21 Millennium Inc., for “Extraction Point” Documentary - Gold Award sponsored by Parkbridge Lifestyle Communities, for “Wake Me up When September Ends” Followed by Tom Scholte winning two awards: Documentary Platinum Award sponsored by Taste of Paradise for “Wings” and Video Ad Gold Award sponsored by Catch 22 for “Wasaga Beach Commercial 2012”. Point of View Are snowflakes really unique? It’s true—no two snowflakes are identical. Since each snowflake follows a unique route from the sky to the ground, each encounters slightly different environmental conditions. The result of these subtle differences in their path is that there will never be duplicate snowflakes. Why is snow white? ? ? If snow is made up of clear ice crystals, why does it appear white? For the answer to this mystery, we have to understand the properties of light. Visible light from the sun is made up of different frequencies. When light hits an object, these frequencies are absorbed and reflected back to our eyes, which interpret them as various colours. When light hits snow, it reflects off of the many surfaces of the crystals, causing the light to scatter. The light frequencies bounce in multiple directions, reflecting all of the visible frequencies of light back at your eyes. Because the “colour” of all combined light frequencies is white, this is how snow appears to us. It’s similar to the way that glass looks clear, but when it’s crushed in a mound, it appears white. What kind of snow makes the best snowball? The snowball is the ultimate weapon of winter. There’s so much satisfaction in packing and throwing a perfectly packed sphere of snow. The ideal snowball should be made using slightly wet snow, which adheres better and results in a more tightly packed ball. The perfect temperature for snowballs is around 0°, because the snow will be wetter near its melting point. If the snow is powdery and dry, ditch the snowy battlefield and hit the slopes. Lighter snow is better for skiing and snowboarding. Courtesy http://cottagelife.com Samantha Edwards

Dance for Hope February 16th at RecPlex According to Wikipedia HOPE is defined by the emotional state which promotes the belief in a positive outcome related to events and circumstances in one's life. The First Annual Dance for Hope is being held exactly for that reason – to provide hope to Haitian refugees in the Dominican Republic that positive change is coming. When it rains in Ascension Village, the only entrance to and from the village is unavailable for use due to the high water levels. Medical vehicles, supply trucks and other necessities cannot be obtained. This unfortunate situation prevents many people from seeking the requirements they need for survival. Through humanitarian efforts we are able to provide not only hope but the resources to help eliminate this severe problem. On Saturday, February 16th my wife Dr. Dina Ghobrial and I are inviting the residents of Wasaga Beach and their friends and family, to come out to support our First Annual Dance for Hope event. The goal is to help raise funds that will go directly into building a bridge for the Ascension Village. The dance is in collaboration with Snowman Mania and will provide the festival with an entertainment component for the adult community. Music is being provided by B101 and will be playing top 40, dance, hip hop, old school and everything in between. We are looking for items to be donated for our prize table and any financial donations are greatly appreciated. We will be transforming the Oakview Room within the Wasaga Beach RecPlex into a ‘night club’ atmosphere with the doors opening at 8:00pm. Tickets are a suggested donation of $20.00 and can be picked up at Harvey’s Wasaga, Ghobrial Dentistry or from any member of the Snowman Mania Steering Committee. For more details I ask that you visit our Facebook Group ‘Dance for Hope Wasaga’ or contact me at emasad@gmail.com Thank you for your continuing support. Ehab Masad Business owner and Resident

Time to Remind Motorists about Driving In Snow WASAGA BEACH Stonebridge Town Centre

Recently we have been experiencing an “on again, off again” winter. One day you can see the leaves you missed raking last fall and the next they are under an inch of snow, which is gone in 3 days with plus temperatures and back by the weekend. There is not much we can do about the weather but there is a lot we can do about how we drive and the condition of our motor vehicle. First and foremost be honest with yourself and your driving skills and second be realistic in judging the condition of your vehicle. Both are tested when you drive in the winter, especially this one. Below I have provided some safe driving tips many you may have seen before, but being reminded on how to be safe or safe practices is never a bad thing. 1)Never drink and drive (this includes any illegal drug you may be using) 2)If you take medication check to ensure it does not affect your driving ability 3)Always wear your seat belt 4)Know the road and weather conditions before you start your journey 5)Slow down 6)Leave more space between you and the vehicle in front of you 7)Don't “text” or use your cellular device while driving 8)If using a GPS, remember it is only a driving aid, it should not replace common sense 9)Ensure your motor vehicle is winter ready; a.Are all fluids topped up? b.Are windshield wipers in good shape or do you need new winter ones? c.Are your tires fit for winter driving? Snow tires are better. d.Is your motor vehicle mechanically fit? 10)Clean the snow and ice off your motor vehicle, not just a tiny hole cleaned in the windshield, clean the whole vehicle including the roof. Also ensure the windshield wipers are clean and working and your side mirrors are clean of snow 11)Have an emergency kit that includes; a.Working cellular telephone and charger b.Blanket c.Water d.Non-perishable easily consumed food (ex. Chocolate bar) e.Extra hats, gloves, warm clothing f.First Aid Kit g.For more items to have please see, Simcoe County web site (http://www.simcoe.ca/ws_cos/groups/public/@pub-cosem/documents/web_content/wscos_003433.pdf) 12)If you do have a collision, stay calm, check to see if anyone is injured, if someone is seriously injured call “911” if there is only damage to the vehicles call your local Police Service, if OPP then 1-888-310-1122 to report. 13)If you are in a collision, do not walk around the collision scene remain in your vehicle with your seat belt on and call Police. 14)If the weather and road conditions are bad don't call your local Police Service to ask for conditions. Instead listen to your local radio and television stations or check the weather conditions on the internet. Also the Ministry of Transportation provides Travellers' Road Information at 1-800-268-4686 or at: www.ontario.ca/winterdriving and scroll down to “Provincial Highway Information” Remember to check out my next “On Duty” article in Beach Booster!

Paul of Wasaga Beach sent this photo of Bailey, an American Eskimo/Poodle and Bailey’s friend and shadow Cockatiel Toby. Bailey is 15 and Toby is 17. Cockatiels live about 25 years but most only live to 10 due to accidents, bad nutrition and illness. The world record, however, was 31. The great thing about cockatiels is that they can live longer than dogs and cats, but they don't live (almost) forever like the larger parrots like amazons and macaws!

What if you could make a big audacious impact with one small act? Would you be more inclined to take that first step if you knew your action would gain momentum when aligned with the actions of others? In the corporate planning community this is simply called strategic alignment. The concept is centered on getting everyone contributing to a cause by aiming their particular goal in the same direction. Take a water droplet for instance. A rain drop by itself is mere humidity. Take a gazillion raindrops going in the same direction and you have the natural force of a hurricane that will displace anything in its path. Malcolm Gladwell in his book called “The Tipping Point” explains how little things can make a big difference. He defines a tipping point as “the moment of critical mass, the threshold, the boiling point.” His book goes on to explain and describe the “mysterious” sociological changes that mark everyday life. Ideas and products and messages and behaviors spread like viruses do. This brings me to my point. The Second Annual Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival is part of these phenomena. There were a myriad of single small acts of volunteering that aligned together what created an audacious outcome this past Saturday January 26th, that we as residents can be very proud of. It does not stop there. These small acts of accomplishment align with the greater vision set out by our Mayor Cal Patterson and Council to move our town further to being a four season destination with great Quality of Life benefits for our visitors and residents. Partnership agreements were announced at the event between the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival and Switch Video of Collingwood and Henry’s Photo Video Digital of Barrie Ontario to develop training workshops to help Wasaga Beach businesses as Advertising Video Entrants for the Third Annual WBSFF to hone their 30 second message and select the appropriate filming equipment and software to create submissions that will showcase their business as well as the beautiful natural surroundings of Wasaga beach and area. Just think if we have 50 businesses in Wasaga Beach that take up the training workshops and produce a video advertisement entry for the third annual Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival they will improve their business focus and can you imagine the buzz that would be created on You Tube for Wasaga Beach featuring its businesses and the great attractions our community has to offer, with the world as their audience! This even goes further. The Town of Wasaga Beach has purchased an outdoor inflatable screen to feature two seasons of film festival films and promotional videos to our visitors and residents at all of our other festivals and events. Now if we can commandeer a few more small acts of volunteering effort to put this outdoor film equipment to effective use supporting our vision who knows what kind of tipping point we could create? Beach BOOSTER is certainly here to help. Send me your thoughts. Please email me at Gary@beachBOOSTER.com

Franklin of the Arctic

Sir John Franklin (1786 – 1847) Passed through Wasaga Beach in 1825 John Franklin is the British Explorer remembered today for his vanished expedition of 1845. In 1825 he landed in New York City where he set off on an incredibly long journey across North America to the Arctic. Travel was primitive back then and Franklin’s progress was slow. Spring found the Franklin Expedition in Ontario, struggling over the Nine Mile Portage from Kempenfeldt Bay to the Nottawasaga River and Wasaga Beach. Once he reached Georgian Bay, his route to the west was clear. It was cold when Franklin arrived at the newly built Naval Establishment at Penetanguishene. An island of civilization along the wild and uninhabited coast of Georgian Bay, the naval base served the Franklin Expedition as a supply depot. For a week, Sir John Franklin, as he would become known stayed at Penetanguishene. It was during these days that a message arrived, following Franklin across the Atlantic. The news was bad. Sir John’s first wife, Lady Franklin, had died following the birth of a child. There was nothing to do but continue. On St. George’s Day, April 23rd, 1825, John Franklin, accompanied by his men and a handful of French Canadian voyageurs, set out to find the Northwest Passage. Travelling in two large Montreal canoes, he headed west. After wintering over, Franklin descended the Mackenzie River to the Arctic Coast, surveying over 700 miles of shoreline. Although his expedition suffered from near starvation, he lost not a man. This second Franklin overland exploration arrived back in Liverpool in September 1827. Sir John Franklin returned to the Arctic in 1845. Franklin, his ships, the Erebus and Terror, and 134 men were never seen again. Franklin had carved out a tragic legend in the annals of Arctic exploration. For a brief time in 1825, he shared his fame and his fate with the garrison at Penetanguishene.

Beach BOOSTER supports fun and safe sledding

Welcome Wasaga Beach trail rider!

Etienne of Beach BOOSTER Group supports fun and safe sledding

The snow gods have again provided us with fresh snow on our trails and sled traffic has been outstanding. This past week we were able to get all trails groomed and ready (again) for riding across central Ontario. Snowmobile club members from across the region stopped by the club house this past weekend by the hundreds and it was good to see our winter tourism back in business. Comments from riders were that we here in Wasaga Beach are providing great access to the town amenities and the incentives provided by the business community, inviting to passing sledders. Many thanks to our supporting establishments for a job well done. This past weekend we co-hosted with the Barrie Snowmobile Club an annual event supporting the International Civitan organization that brings their top volunteer youth to Canada to experience the excitement that winter has to offer each year. Youth from all over the southern states had the opportunity to experience snowmobiling here in Wasaga Beach and judging by the enthusiasm, all had a wonderful experience. Watch Snowmobiler Television for an episode on this event in the near future. Our volunteers are preparing for this year's Snowman Mania with our Fun Run for Breast cancer and hope all will come out and support this cause. As with any off road riding experience always plan ahead , be prepared and ride in control. Ron Wheadon wasaga snowmobile Club President

Wasaga Beach Lions Club 1963-1973 Compiled by Janice Campbell It is hard to believe that we are coming up to our 50th year serving our community. We are going to give you a “looking back at the past” for you to see and imagine what impact we have made in this town. The Lions Club of Wasaga was actually started in February of 1963 as a Business Men's Group by the Reverend Donald French, rector of the Church of the Prince of Peace as an ultimate means of increasing church membership. The first members were Sidney Martin, Morris Bent, Stanley Piltcher and the Reverend Don. At the second meeting each man brought a friend. At the next meeting each man again brought a friend and so on. The fellowship rapidly caught on and before long a large group of men was meeting at the church each week. Of course, the men were of many different faiths and although all were broad minded, they could hardly become Anglican Church members. The Reverend Don French realizing the great potential force for good that these men represented suggested they become a Lions Club, and being from Stayner, invited a Stayner Lion Jack Carroll to speak to them. In the following weeks, Lions from other clubs, visited and explained the goals of Lionism, and subsequently was formed the WasagaOakview Lions Club with Sidney Martin becoming the first president in May 1963. Upon the annexation of Oakview Beach by Wasaga Beach from the town of Sunnidale, the Oakview part of the name was dropped, and the name Wasaga Beach Lions Club was adopted. (Lion Fred Wilkes)

The Way Wasaga Was King’s Highway 92...by Joe Bickerstaff The history of Highway 92 dates back to August 5, 1936 when the Elmvale-Wasaga Beach Road was designated as a new provincial highway. Originally the new King’s Highway 92 ended in “Downtown Wasaga Beach” at Main Street, approximately 14 km west of Elmvale. The entire highway was gravel-surfaced at first, but a portion was paved from Wasaga Beach to a point 3 km east in 1940. In 1947, the remaining section was paved to Elmvale. In 1982, King’s Highway 92 was extended through town on Mosley Street to connect with King’s Highway 26, making it a total of 24 km in length. On January 1, 1998, our own Provincial King’s Highway was decommissioned and downloaded to the County of Simcoe, becoming Simcoe Road 92 between Elmvale and where it becomes River Road West in Wasaga Beach. At one time Highway 92 was the recognized “Main” entrance to Wasaga Beach, bringing locals, cottagers and visitors directly to the businesses located on our once vibrant Main Street and our Main Beach Area.

Tales of our Neighbors and Friends Bells Draped in Black Fall Silent

Roy Wilson 1927 - 2013

Rest in Peace my dear friend

Blinky in the 1970's

Bells Draped in Black Fall Silent to give Town Crier Roy Wilson a perfect send-off. Members of the Ontario Guild of Town Criers, 14 in total along with their escorts dressed in colourful Town Crier outfits came to Wasaga Beach on that Friday to pay a final tribute to their fellow member. Wasaga Beach is mourning the loss of Town Crier Roy Wilson who passed away on January 20th. More than 300 attended the Service at the RecPlex. The Bell is silent. The oh yea's are no more. We all had great respect for Roy and his wife Kay who was always walking along with him. Yes, he was known as our Town Crier but he was much more than that. Roy was known for contributing to make Wasaga Beach a better place to live and he encouraged people to support local events and help in the development of our community. Roy became a member of the Toronto Police Force (as it was then known) in 1948. While waiting to be accepted as a police officer, he worked in what was known as the ' Purple Gang' enforcing anti-gambling and anti prostitution laws in the area of Elizabeth and Dundas Street West. After becoming a police officer, he was assigned to Old Number 2 Division at Bay and Dundas Streets. After 2 Station was demolished, he was transferred to #1 Division on Court Street, then later to Old 11 Division at London and Markham Streets (later became 13 Division) where he served in the detective office. He was later transferred to the Safety Bureau under Inspector Charles Pearsall and while there he developed Blinky The Talking Police Car. He patented it and when he retired from the Force in 1975, he turned the patent over to Chief of Police Harold Adamson. After leaving the Force, he worked for the Ontario Safety Council and lectured trucking companies throughout Ontario. He was later contacted by ex-Inspector Fred Wooton who was head of Security for the Blue Jays Baseball team and offered a job in security. He worked there for Pat Gillick and Paul Beaston. Roy had a cottage at Wasaga Beach and in 1984, he decided to move here full time with his wife Catherine. They demolished the cottage and built a home on the property. In 1998 Wasaga Beach realized the need for a town crier. Roy entered the competition and won over a number of other candidates. Until his passing, Roy was still active as Town Crier presenting Official Proclamations, appearing at special events, opening ceremonies, anniversaries, weddings, birthdays exhibitions and special occasions. He attended the Mayor’s Levee early January. We will never forget his booming voice and we will certainly try to keep his passion alive. Submitted by Bill Frieday
