No Man Should Die From Prostate Cancer – Yet It’s The Second Leading Cause of Cancer Death In Canadian Men by James Meschino DC, MS, ND, ROHP

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among Canadian men, yet recent advances in early detection, treatment, and the role of nutrition and lifestyle factors in the prevention and management of this disease, has shown us that death from prostate cancer can be prevented in nearly every case. To prevent yourself from becoming a victim of prostate cancer’s lethal effects I strongly suggest that you take the following advice seriously: 1. Get an annual physical exam from your MD, and insist on a PSA blood test if you are over the age of 45. This allows the medical team to discover prostate cancer in its early stages, when it is highly curable. 2. If prostate cancer is discovered and removal of the prostate (via surgery) is recommended, you should know that in up to 33% of cases prostate cancer returns, usually 5-7 years later, as metastatic disease (prostate cancer cells growing elsewhere in the body). 3. If your prostate cancer was treated in the early stages by surgery or radiation, you should know that there are nutritional and lifestyle steps that can help prevent the recurrence and/or progression of the disease. Virtually the same lifestyle advice applies to the prevention of prostate cancer if you are presently cancer-free. So here are the proactive steps you are responsible for: o Eat a low animal fat diet, with exception of fish o Consume tomato-based and soy-based products at least 3 times per week o Eat a cruciferous vegetable daily (broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower) o Stay lean and aerobically fit, with a waist circumference below 36 inches o Consume no more than 3 alcoholic drinks PER WEEK, or avoid it altogether. o Take a high potency multiple vitamin each day, that contains 400 IU of Vitamin E Succinate and 100-150 mcg of selenium o Take 3 capsules per day of a supplement containing 400 mg each of fish, flaxseed and borage seed oil o If you are over 40, take a prostate support supplement each day containing meaningful doses of saw palmetto, pygeum africanum, soy isoflavones, beta-sitosterol, lycopene, stinging nettle, pumpkin seed extract – this combination of nutrients help block the build up of the dangerous form of testosterone, can encourage developing prostate cancer cells to commit suicide, and provide other protective effects within the prostate gland that you can not afford to ignore. o Drink 8 ounces of pomegranate juice each day o Have 2 heaping tablespoons of ground flaxseed per day o Get extra vitamin D – 1000-4000 IU per day (to achieve a blood level above 80nmol/L) o After age 45-50 take a supplement providing 0.5 to 1.5 mg of melatonin one hour before bedtime. Melatonin exhibits impressive effects against prostate cancer. At the Canadian Cancer Immuno-therapy Clinic, where I have worked, as the Director of Nutritional Therapy, prostate cancer patients are given several other supplements and the dosages for some nutrients are higher than listed in this article. However, these higher dosages must be decided on a case-by-case basis. For more information on this subject feel free to email me at drjames@sympatico.ca.

Just Show Up!

How did your fitness and nutrition plans go this week? Were you able to stick with them, or did "life" just get in the way? I don't know if you've ever noticed this before, but many times the key to success is just "showing up." Experience has taught us that it doesn't always take MASSIVE action to get results. It doesn't always require HARD work. You don't have to be the BEST, starve yourself or workout like a maniac. Really, it just requires you to show-up. Consistently. Day after day after day. If you can do that, a habit will be formed. Momentum will become unstoppable. And you'll eventually reach your goals. So...are you doing your best to show-up each day? Even if you don't really feel like it? If yes, then GREAT...keep it up! If no, then ask yourself WHY NOT? If you don't do it now, chances are you won't do it ever. Starting now, do whatever it takes to just show up. You'll be amazed at what you can accomplish!

Easter What does it mean to you? Bunny rabbits. Eggs. Ham. Buffets. Old movies like "The Robe" and "The Ten Commandments". New clothes. New shoes. A new dress. A new suit. Family dinners. Spring weather (or maybe not this year). Going to church. Spring break. What does Easter mean to you? I read a cute story today of a Sunday School teacher who asked her class on the Sunday before Easter if they knew what happened on Easter and why it was so important. One little girl spoke up saying: "Easter is when the whole family gets together, and you eat turkey and sing about the pilgrims and all that." "No, that’s not it," said the teacher. "I know what Easter is," a second student responded. "Easter is when you get a tree and decorate it and give gifts to everybody and sing lots of songs." "Nope, that’s not it either," replied the teacher. Finally a third student spoke up, "Easter is when Jesus was killed, and put in a tomb and left for three days." "Ah, thank goodness somebody knows" the teacher thought to herself. But then the student went on: "Then everybody gathers at the tomb and waits to see if Jesus comes out, and if he sees his shadow he has to go back inside and we have six more weeks of winter."

With OPP P.C. Mark Kinney “Keeping the Community Safe & Reducing Crime through Information Sharing” Power Assisted Bicycles “E-Bikes!” On October 3, 2006, the Province of Ontario began a pilot project to evaluate the use of powerassisted bicycles (aka electric bikes or e-bikes) on roads and highways where conventional bicycles were allowed. This pilot project was scheduled for 3 years and resulted in Bill 126, of the Road Safety Act, 2009 being enact. We see them on our roads or on the paved or unpaved shoulders and even on sidewalks but what is the legal definition of an “e-bike” and what legal requirements do the operators need to follow? Below is the legal definition for an e-bike: 1)Has a maximum weight of 120 kg (includes the weight of bike and battery); 2)Has wheels with a diameter of at least 350 mm and width of at least 35 mm; and 3)Meets the federal definition of a power-assisted bicycle: a.has steering handlebars and is equipped with pedals, b.is designed to travel on not more than three wheels in contact with the ground, c.is capable of being propelled by muscular power, d.has one or more electric motors that have, singly or in combination, the following characteristics: i.it has a total continuous power output rating, measured at the shaft of each motor, of 500 W or less, ii.if it is engaged by the use of muscular power, power assistance immediately ceases when the muscular power ceases, iii.if it is engaged by the use of an accelerator controller, power assistance immediately ceases when the brakes are applied, and iv.it is incapable of providing further assistance when the bicycle attains a speed of 32 km/h on level ground, e.bears a label that is permanently affixed by the manufacturer and appears in a conspicuous location stating, in both official languages, that the vehicle is a power-assisted bicycle as defined federally, and f.has one of the following safety features, i.an enabling mechanism to turn the electric motor on and off that is separate from the accelerator controller and fitted in such a manner that it is operable by the driver, or ii.a mechanism that prevents the motor from being engaged before the bicycle attains 3 km/hr. And what do you need to operate an “e-bike”: 1)All operators/riders/passengers must be 16 years of age and older. 2)All operators/riders/passengers on operating an e-bike are required to wear an approved bicycle or motorcycle helmet. 3)No driver's licence is required 4)No written test is required 5)No vehicle registration or plate is required 6)No motor vehicle liability insurance is required Under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario (HTA) an e-bike is a bicycle and vehicle not a motor vehicle, unless the e-bike no longer conforms to the above definition. Of note when the motor is engaged it falls within the definition of a motor vehicle under the Criminal Code of Canada and if you are operating that way and are impaired you can be charged criminally. Beware! Tipping Point

It’s that time of year

Well it's that time of year again when we start thinking about the local tourism economy. We learned last year that just plain old good weather does not make a great tourism economy. Attracting the right kind of visitor and new residence seekers to our great community is turning out to be an exercise in heavy lifting. For all of us Beach residents who think, well it Gary Cerantola; will be less bothersome traffic and just more gary@beachBOOSTER.com unencumbered time at the beach for us locals, think again. Personally, I wonder how this is ultimately going to transfer into the “sale price” of my home when I want to finally get away from yard maintenance and shovelling my own snow. A vibrant tourism economy means, more employment, better and competitive services and more tax dollars to provide the good living things we need in this town and a clear way to attract new residence seekers. The beach front developments planned and promoted a few years back was a pivotal factor that motivated my wife Eva and I to invest in a home at the Beach and move to the area. Current Challenges Whether we like it or not, Wasaga Beach is at the mercy of global tourism marketing, primarily on the internet. It is now the battle for destination share of mind and share of wallet and it’s being fought online. There is increasing scarcity of marketing resources to support sales efforts in what has become a fragmented and unpredictable tourism market. There is a real need to focus dollar and human effort allocation. The punch line is that "We are all in this together!" and right now it seems that there are a lot of efforts going every which way trying to deal with the situation with really no common base of businesses and residents owning a common baseline of problems and dealing with these problems together. It appears that many other Ontario communities are better at this than we are. Just take a look at some of the outrageous Celebrate Ontario grants that have been garnered by other communities. If the Collingwood Girlfriend’s Getaway can secure $40,000.00 in funds why are we not collectively tapping into these resources? RT07, our regional tourism arm is offering some solutions with programs and again there is no concerted effort to take advantage of the help. Changing How We Work To Align, Focus, & Win New Business The way I see it and correct me if I'm wrong (gary@beachBOOSTER.com), we need a broad based common front. New businesses coming to Wasaga Beach see the upside potential and are excited about getting on with creating attractions and building a going concern. Some established businesses leveraged to the hilt based on an older vision for Wasaga Beach that stalled has put them in survival mode catering to any warm blooded paying customer. Other local businesses are just waiting for the new vision to materialize to take them to the promise land. Our beach front approach to marketing has to change from “Telephone order taking” for the summer season to “Long Term Business Making”. Our three month gypsy operator strategy for the waterfront has run its course. For the last few years, outside operators have come in, sold their wares with no leasehold improvements, while displacing regular town business sales and left with no concern for our local brand and no contribution to our long term success. With that business model there is only so much trade you can do with day trippers anyway. We know it takes time to build for our new vision. In the meantime, what are we as businesses and residents doing about the eroding brand of Wasaga Beach and helping our local businesses thrive as a whole? We need to be collectively asking better questions. We can’t leave our problems to be solved by others. We need to be re-directing our efforts so that we can work towards a new four season business model that will be in place to sustain the infrastructure for the new vision to come. And we have to do this together. We have to get away from the will come and “Build it and they will come and we just have to Answer the Phone” to “Here’s what we are now offering and it’s just going to get bigger and better”. As businesses, as concerned residents, as Town, as Chamber of Commerce, as business associations, we need to come together, align and focus on a unified four season campaign that integrates, Internet and database marketing, business skills, customer service, co-operative and aligned marketing, public relations, experience delivery, co-op and cross promotion to name a few. It has to be orchestrated and integrated to make the best use of our resources. Moving Forward A refreshed, competitive offer for Wasaga Beach, targeting the right people, in the right places with the right message combined with a new way of working together that aligns the efforts of all the players as opposed to duplicating them will go a long way to lay track for the expected outcomes of our new vision. We need to collectively tap into the support and guidance for the industry in the form of tools that everyone can use to help align their efforts under the overarching Wasaga Beach tourism strategy. “If it’s to be it’s up to me” says Brian Tracy. Let’s get all the Wasaga Beach forces to align in the same direction contributing to a year long continual marketing campaign that is sustainable and gets away from the spring blitz approach to tourism that may sizzle but misses out on providing the steak. Beach BOOSTER is certainly here to help and inform. Send me your thoughts. Please email me at Gary@beachBOOSTER.com

Hello Members and Friends Wasaga Snowmobile Club held its first annual Snow Run for Fun for Breast Cancer on Sunday Februrary the 3rd. It was a perfect day, thanks to some excellent groomed trails we were ready to ride. We divided riders into two groups, a shorter loop and a longer loop. Hearing it was a breast cancer charity ride our M.P. Kellie Leitch dropped in during the ride for a visit. A big thank you to Kellie, our groomer operators, volunteers, supporters and riders we had a blast. Mark your calendar for the 1st Sunday of February next year for ride # 2. For over 10 years, members of Central Ontario ATV Club, (COATV) have helped Wasaga Snowmobile Club stake and sign our trail system. In a move to thank them and cement a partnership Wasaga Snowmobile Club voted unanimously to ask Central Ontario ATV Club (who build and maintain legal ATV trails throughout Simcoe County) to use our club house for their monthly meetings. Always progressive always forward thinking Wasaga Snowmobile Club, one of the oldest snowmobile clubs in Ontario, and Central Ontario ATV Club on the oldest ATV clubs in Ontario we are exited about the future possibilities of this partnership. John Broderick Director of Strategic Planning Wasaga Snowmobile Club

The Way Wasaga Was Wasaga Snowmobile Club Beach BOOSTER welcomes input from our readers and is always eager to hear local stories about our wonderful community! Below is a letter sent from a local resident who remembers the early day of our great Wasaga Snowmobile Club. Included are some pictures of the original Wasaga Snowmobile Club “Search and Rescue Patrol” and their trainers. If you recognize any of these Wasaga Beach volunteers, please let us know at info@beachbooster.com or 705-241-9762. I enjoyed reading about the Wasaga Speedway in your March issue of beach BOOSTER publication. I would like to add however that this racetrack was used for many years after its suggested closing in 1970. The then fledgling Wasaga Snowmobile Club held races and trail rides at the track and into the surrounding woodlands. I remember one of the final races when snow was trucked in for the 1983-84 season Winter Jamboree. Though it was bitterly cold, there was not enough snow on the ground. We called the Speedway the “Hitching Post Race Track”, as backing the track and the stands, stood an authentic log building... “The Hitching Post”. It sported a massive stone fireplace warming a large room with rough hewn tables and benches. In a side nook was a snack bar which was manned by Biff Smith. He seemed to own the race track and its surrounding land. Some of this land was divided into registered lots for future development under his name. When my husband and I joined the snowmobile club in 1969 there were about 50 members and the Hitching Post served as the Club House. At that time, Carl Mitchell was the President of the club. Ethel Mitchell, Bing Jowett and Lance Robertson looked after the trails. Bill Mitchell kept records with his camera and was instrumental in forming the Search and Rescue Patrol. The job of Search and Rescue was to administer First Aid and transport the casualties out to the road, where the ambulance could take over. Many heroic acts are credited to this local Search and Rescue Patrol in Wasaga Beach. Life saving actions included providing First Aid with injuries at the race track, assisting lost and stranded snowmobilers on the local trails and once bringing a woman in labour to the Collingwood Hospital when the local roads were blocked by a winter storm! The Wasaga Snowmobile Club expanded quickly to over 200 members. Al Voinsice was the next President. The club held fashion shows in the Dardanella, Grand Balls in the Oakview Centre (now RecPlex) and even organized a safari to Interlaken, Switzerland in 1972. The real meeting place for the Wasaga Snowmobile Club was always at the Hitching Post. When the Department of Lands and Forests (now MNR) took over, the Hitching Post was demolished. Only wild bush and Poison Ivy remains now. Snowmobilers are no longer allowed in this area. The paved Race Track is still in fairly good condition. Hikers, joggers, snow shoers and people walking their dogs now use this site regularly. Some original Wasaga Snowmobile Club members moved away, or passed on, but there are still some of us left who recall the sportsmanship and camaraderie of the early years of the Wasaga Snowmobile Club .
