Pictured Wednesday at the Annual General Meeting of the Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce from left: Susan Irvine, Mark Bannerman and Denise Potter. President Mark Bannerman officially stepped down from his position and welcomed Vice-President Denise Potter to the position of President. As a result of a change of location for Mark's position with TD Canada Trust, he felt the need to step down. There was a full house in the Board Room as Denise was sworn in as the new President and took the oath with Mayor Cal Patterson at her side. Also sworn in was Susan Irvine as Vice-President of the Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce. Beach BOOSTER welcomes Denise and Susan to their new positions and we look forward to working closely with them and the rest of The Chamber! We also wish Mark success in his new location and know that he will still be active in The Chamber and Wasaga Beach as Past President of The Chamber.
Rebecca Stephens of Wasaga Beach Needs Your Rates and Comments on Much Music Coca Cola Covers Rebecca Stephens of Wasaga Beach Needs Your Support and she writes: The Much Music Coca Cola Covers contest is a competition which allows Canadian artists to upload their covers to be judged by both a Sony Music A&R panel as well as the public. The participants must choose to cover songs from a pre-determined set list of six songs. I chose to cover three of the six. The songs I covered are Frank Ocean's Thinkin' Bout You, Demi Lovato's "Give Your Heart a Break" and Ed Sheeran's "The A Team" The deadline of the competition is April 21st. After the 21st deadling the Sony A&R judges will deliberate the following week and choose their top ten finalists in all of Canada. Once the top ten in Canada are selected, the top ten will then be narrowed down to a top three. The top three will get to attend the Much Music Video Awards and the winner of the entire competition will be selected at the show and presented with a Much Music award! May 2nd Next Breakfast at the Beach Speaker –Jeffrey Schmidt Executive Director, RTO7 The Networking Committee for the Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that the speaker for our next 'Breakfast at the Beach' on Thursday, May 2nd at 7:00 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. will be Jeffrey Schmidt. The breakfast will be held at Wasaga Sands, 10 Club Court Wasaga Beach. Jeff began working with the RTO7, prior to its incorporation and was subsequently appointed the organization's first Executive Director in July 2011. Jeff's involvement in tourism originated as an operator and member of several boards involved in destination marketing and development, including with another RTO. His background includes over 25 years of strategic management consulting to a wide range of public and not-for-profit organizations across North America. RTO7 provides strategic and collaborative leadership to build, sustain and grow tourism in Bruce, Grey and Simcoe counties. It is one of 13 independent not-for-profit corporations to which the Ontario government provides some $40 million in annual funding to lead tourism planning, marketing and development in their respective regions. The Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Networking Committee are delighted to welcome Jeff as our speaker for what we believe will be a very informative talk on Tourism in our area. The Secret to Successful Networking: Beer We all know that you shake hands and contracts are signed over dinner and drinks. Sports games and concerts are communal experiences shared by strangers. Bars are casual environments where people are more relaxed and open to conversation. All of these are situations where people who would otherwise never meet are encouraged to talk, and beer plays a significant role in those interactions. Let me throw a few recent examples at you. I was in Naples, Fla. last month. Sitting in a bar on St. Patrick's Day, I asked a gentleman sitting next to me where he got his green beer. He and his wife, he said, brought green food colouring with them and were adding it to people's drinks; I liked the guy immediately. He told me about a book he had written, linking extroverted behavior to success in business, and we got to the inevitable "so, what do you do" part of the conversation. It turns out he started a little company back in the '70s that you may have heard of: Chuck E. Cheese. My new friend Gene Landrum was the company's first president and has since become a prolific writer. Back in Wasaga Beach the following week at one of our local spots, I was seated next to couple, Peter and Fran, who are sampling multiple different beers. I make a suggestion for something to try, which lead to a conversation about beer and food and, unexpectedly, the apparel industry. He knew a ton about manufacture, sales, sourcing and more, which made sense when I learned that Peter Capolino is the founder of sport clothing brand Mitchell & Ness, which sells officially licensed vintage jerseys and jackets for the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL. He had a wealth of information. It's a scientific fact: Beer makes networking happen. You never know who you'll meet when you're out at a bar, but you'll never meet them if you're not there. And as someone said "Good people drink good beer," so you know you'll be in good company. If you've got a story of a chance encounter like one of these, I'd love to hear it. Making a Report to the OPP “How To” Calling and making a report of an incident or crime to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) or other Police Service is something many may never do and some only once or twice in their life time. This being said generally this report is of great importance to the caller and to us the Police so let's do it efficiently and do it right the first time. Here are some tips on what number to call and why and what information is generally need, so be prepared: 1) If the incident is one where someone could be seriously injured or a high value of property damage could occur, a good example of this is reporting a “Drunk Driver”, then call “911”. 2) If the incident, or your concern or crime is of a less then serious nature, such as seeing graffiti on the side of a building, call 1-888-310-1122. 3) If you need information such as a motor vehicle collision (MVC) report number, or calling to speak to an officer then call the Huronia West OPP during regular business hours Monday to Friday at 705 429-3575. Once you have contacted the OPP through one of the above 3 ways we will want some basic information: 1) Your name both first and last. 2) Where you are calling from, this includes house number (emergency number) street (proper name), community and Town or Township. For example 1234567 Finlay Mill Road, (Village of Midhurst) but include Springwater Twp. Know where you are! 3) If at home, write your address by your telephone, as the person who may call us that you just had a heart attack, may be a visitor who does not know the address they are at and you can't help. 4) What is the concern, what is wrong! Just the Facts! 5) If you are in a motor vehicle and need to contact us, do not use local slang for road names use the ones on the road sign. Telling us that you do not know the road you are on but you see a barn with a red roof and cows or just an emergency number on a green sign will probably not help us find you, but knowing the proper name of the road (Beachwood Drive) will. 6) If involved in a MVC, as hard as it may seem you must calm yourself, if you do not our communication people you contacted will spend more time trying to get the information they need from you, increasing the time it takes us to get emergency vehicles to your aid. 7) Remember that if you do call “911”, stay on the line until you are told to hang up. If you don't we will call you back and yes Police will attend no matter if you dialed it in error. Remember to check out my next “On Duty” article in Beach Booster!

Tanya recently launched What's Up Hut at our Business After 5 on Thursday, March 28th at Boston Pizza where she co-hosted with Alex and Sandy Smardenka. This latest device will direct traffic to your business by allowing customers to find your business quickly and easily with just 3-clicks away. A multi-tier advertising to enhance business listing offering map and directions to your business. Tanya stopped by Beach Corner to talk about her kiosk device. She's been living in The Beach for over ten years and is passionate about Wasaga Beach. Tanya has a marketing background and a company called “Outreach Marketing Group” for small to medium size businesses. She is eager to get information out there and connecting people to content. For eight years Tanya was a youth worker with the city of Vancouver and she has a huge spot in her heart for community development. Tanya says: “What's Up Hut helps marry those passions with a little bit of community development and business promotion.” The idea came to her when talking to a neighbor about our amazing resources in town. The neighbor was looking to dine in our community and Tanya suggested a restaurant. The neighbor unable to find that restaurant on the internet ordered a pizza instead. At that moment she realized how many more businesses are losing out due to the lack of information available to our tourist. Therefore, she came up with the idea to create an interactive system screen for all businesses, community events, volunteer groups with just three clicks. A lot of work has gone into this one of a kind prototype 7-1/2 feet tall. It is currently displayed at Boston Pizza in Stonebridge and plans are to move the kiosk before May 24 weekend to the west end. She's working on creating a different form and hopes to have 10-12 units. The units are very user friendly with large buttons, one touch of a category ie: “Community” on the front page then it brings you to sub-categories such as schools and places of worship. “The Get Involved Volunteer” button will provide all the organizations in town. There are times in our life when we may feel overtaken by events seemingly designed to ruin us or at minimum prearranged by circumstance to overwhelm us. We generally find it deep enough in ourselves or through some help to develop the ability to adapt to our series of life's frustrations that we encounter and move forward. My take on these circumstances is that they are placed in our life to make the good things we experience great. My daughter and husband and seven week old little bundle of joy Charlotte came to visit us of late. There is just something special about having a new born in the home to dote over and celebrate all of the new beginnings of life which seem to create this emotional high of joy, hope and love that we can share amongst all of us. It’s a moment of magical transformation where in a short space of time, life makes sense, good feelings are Julie and daugthter Charotte amplified and stronger more meaningful connections are made amongst all of us. So I thought I would share this joy with our beach BOOSTER readers. We all need to stop and savour the good things in life. There are so, so many moments of magic available to us, everyday…and we choose whether to notice them or not. Even making the decision to seek out and look for magic in our lives can spark a new awareness and appreciation in us, and we begin to notice more and more of life’s magic. “You can't always get what you want. But if you try sometimes well you might find You get what you need” (M. Jagger/K. Richards), Rolling Stones 1969 album Let It Bleed I think Mick and Keith got it right in these lyrics. There are so many things not within our control in life that can get us down. It’s up to us to find the things in life that bring magic to us and in most cases they are exactly what we need to help us savour the moment, give thanks for the good things in life and allow us to live life as meaningfully as we can. This awareness boosts our resilience for dealing with life’s fines for being alive. Sometimes, turning inward to seek what you need can open up a whole new purpose in life. No sense in sleep walking through the remainder of your life. Find those good things that are great. They make you feel alive. Thank you little Charlotte. You have made everyone in our family feel alive and well.

The Hamlet of Van Vlack is now Wasaga Beach

Someone was getting a jump on spring cleaning and the dust covered box from the days of the Second World War had been put out on the curb for pickup. He rescued it, sorting through old wedding notices, school report cards and unpaid bills and found a postcard of the beach at Wasaga Beach. The card was dated July 3rd, 1943 and the endless sandy beach was covered with cars and what seemed to be 10,000 people, many in uniform. Wasaga Beach, the longest freshwater beach in the world, is a place filled with stories, such as that of John Van Vlack. The sand beaches at the mouth of the Nottawasaga River had already passed through centuries of history when this jack-ofall-trades arrived in 1870. It had been a summer encampment for the Huron, a French trading post, a battleground and a Military Fort. But The Beach had never become a permanent settlement. And then John Van Vlack purchased 69 acres of land south of the river’s mouth, turning his hand to creating a community. He built a shingle mill, opened a general store, and became the first postmaster of The Hamlet of Van Vlack. Of all the important tasks he took on was the building of a bridge over The Nottawasaga River. Van Vlack’s wooden bridge opened Wasaga Beach for development. Soon, a centre portion could be raised to allow tugs to pass under. By 1880, there were more than a hundred residents living in The Hamlet of Van Vlack. Little did they know that their tranquil life would one day be broken by countless summer visitors who came to Wasaga Beach, not Van Vlack as it had been known for years

Natural Medicine: Separating Fact From Fiction Is Iron Deficiency Weakening Your Immune System And Causing Fatigue? by James Meschino DC, MS, ND, ROHP Iron deficiency remains the leading nutrient deficiency in the world, including Canada. Severe iron deficiency results in anemia (abnormal red blood cell appearance), as iron is required to make a key part of hemoglobin within red blood cells, which transports oxygen to our tissues. Signs of iron deficiency anemia include excessive fatigue, decreased appetite, rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, hair loss, cold hands and feet, sore tongue, easy bruising, brittle or sore nails, and some other signs and symptoms. Blood tests for iron deficiency show a low serum ferritin (protein bound to iron in the blood) and a very low hemoglobin count. Medical doctors are very good at identifying iron deficiency once it reaches the stage of anemia. However, many women, during their childbearing years, do not have iron deficiency anemia, but are walking around with Early Stage Iron Deficiency due to the blood loss that occurs with menstruation. Early Stage Iron Deficiency: Early symptoms of iron deficiency often involve frequent infections such as colds, since iron is necessary for normal immune function. Some individuals feel cold as a result of reduced body temperature regulation. Frequent headaches and constant fatigue are also common features of early stage iron deficiency. Iron deficiency may even aggravate or trigger bouts of depression. I generally become concerned about iron deficiency in women that have any combination of these symptoms, if they exhibit a serum ferritin level between12 and 20 ug/L (micrograms per liter). A level below 12 ug/L indicates depletion of the body’s iron stores, which will eventually result in anemia. What To Do: If you have any of the above symptoms ask your doctor to perform blood tests for iron deficiency. If you don’t have anemia, but your serum ferritin is between 12 and 20 ug/L, you would be wise to consume more iron-rich foods and take a supplement to help support your iron status. I am not a fan of recommending red meat or organ meats to patients. In these cases I do allow the dark meat of chicken and turkey, which provide appreciable amounts of heme iron, which is the most bioavailable
form. Iron can also be obtained from non-heme sources such as fortified cereals and breads, beans, tofu, dried fruits, whole grains, and green leafy vegetables like spinach. Iron Supplements: Ask any woman and she will tell you iron supplements are constipating. Not to mention that they are not well absorbed. In recent years a new supplement has entered the marketplace, which is a chelated iron. This means the iron is attached to two glycine molecules (glycine is an amino acid). This new form of iron resembles the iron found in meat (heme iron), which is highly bioavailable. Studies have shown that this new chelated iron is four times as bioavailable as are inorganic iron supplements, such as ferrous sulfate and can raise serum ferritin levels to a significant degree. Not only that, but it is not constipating. In my view, cases of early stage iron deficiency should be managed by using the dietary measures mentioned above, in conjunction with the ingestion of a supplement containing 45 mg of iron chelate (iron bound to glycine known as Ferrous Bisglycinate Chelate) in a formula that also provides other nutrients that support red blood cell and hemoglobin synthesis (Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B2, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12, Copper). Taking two capsules per day until serum ferritin levels are above 20 ug/L is a typical protocol. Remaining on one capsule per day, thereafter, may guard against relapse to an iron deficient state in the future.

Lion Kaye Walker-O’Leary Dies Peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, March 31, 2013 surrounded by her family at the General & Marine Hospital, Collingwood in her 73rd year, Kaye of Wasaga Beach, beloved wife of Jack O’Leary and the late Jim Walker (2008). Loving mother of Karen (Hal Napper) and Scott (Michelle) Walker. Cherished grandmother of Courtney, Shayla, Amanda and Taylor - “Gran’s Girls”. Dear sister of Tom (Isobel) Fox, Jim (Anita) Fox, Angus (Barb) Fox and Carol (Jim Black). Kaye will also be missed by her dearest friend of over 64 years, Anna McGlade, her faithful companion Wullie, her many nieces and nephews, Jack’s children - Shan, Scott and Cindy and their families, her fellow Lions and Lioness and her many, many friends. Kaye devoted herself to her family and her communities. Kaye was a member of the Eastern Star and was always involved with her children’s organizations and activities. Kaye devoted herself to Lionism and was a long time Lion and Lioness with the Brampton and Wasaga Beach clubs and was a charter member of the Nancy Island Lions Club. She received numerous Volunteer Service Awards including the Lions highest honours - Helen Keller Fellowship and the Melvin Jones Fellowship. Her life long efforts were recognized as she was the recipient of the Queen Elizabeth ll Diamond Jubilee Medal. Her passion, love and sense of humour will be missed. Lions and Lioness joined Kaye’s family and friends for a Celebration of her Life at the Wasaga Beach Rec/Plex, Friday April 5, 2013. Reception and fellowship followed. The Way Wasaga Was by Joe Bickerstaff With mid April fast approaching, all in Wasaga Beach start thinking about the upcoming spring and summer season. Although for decades, we have promoted ourselves as a Four Season Resort Town, our tourism roots certainly started as a result of the lure to our beautiful sandy shore in the warm summer months. For generations people have enjoyed our beach and the safety and beauty of the shallow, welcoming waters of Nottawasaga Bay. Our Nottawasaga River has provided cottagers and tourists with some the best fishing in the world with the opportunity to boat from the numerous docks along the shoreline. With the cottagers and tourists, came commerce and the birth or our tourism industry. It was 100 years ago that the McLean family built the original Capstan Inn on the beachfront and a few years later followed with the construction of our famous Dandanella Dance Pavilion. Commercial buildings continued to develop and grow along the beach and on Main Street. Wasaga Beach became one of the most popular summer destinations to all in Southern Ontario and some parts of the northern US states. Our reputation of providing fun in the sun and entertainment spread even further as Wasaga Beach was discovered by members of our armed forces and those of our allies, who spent time at neighbouring CFB Borden. When there was time in the summer months to leave the base and travel to The Beach for some R & R, memories were surely made that were then shared with friends and family all over North America and the world! Today we take pride in welcoming visitors to our modern town and of course still boast about our world famous beach. Although our valued visitors can enjoy all that nature has to offer and many businesses have unique activities and services to keep our guests happy… some of the great summer activities that were enjoyed in The Beach for many years have disappeared. Recently I had the pleasure of going through a copy of The Wasaga Weekly dated July 1966! Although I was fascinated with headlines like “SpringhurstBrock‘s Beach to study merger with Wasaga Beach” and “Council Buys Radar Unit” with the story about the village purchasing one of these units to be installed in one OPP cruiser, it’s the many ads for local businesses that really brings back memories! There are numerous ads promising great food with live entertainment at hotels and lounges with cool sounding names. El Morocco Dining Lounge offering Pizza Pie, The Dardanella, “right on the beach” boasted about it’s Upper Deck Holiday Dancerama with 3 Big Bands and Go Go Dancers! The Sharke Barre in the lower level of The Dard advertised 2 bands. The Bali H’ai Room at the Nottawa Hotel advertised The Fabulous Inspirations performing, while reminding all to visit The Surf Room for fine dining. Other famous local names are mentioned, such as Hank & Frank’s Tavern, The Beacon, The Dyconia Hotel, “The Hotel for the Mature Persons” with it’s Dinner Bell Room for dining. Other ads fill the pages with things to do in The Beach! The Imperial Hell Drivers, featuring 1966 Valiants performing at Wasaga Speedway with Stock Car Racing every Saturday night, Horse Back Riding at The Hitchin’ Post, Roller Skating complete with Go Go Girls and entertainment at the Palace Peir, 5 and 10 pin bowling offered at Wasaga Bowl and the list goes on. The little paper from July ’66 boasts Wasaga Beach is “Canada’s Premier Beach Resort”. There sure was a lot to do, in addition to enjoying The World’s Longest Freshwater Beach!
