Speaker: Regina Featherstone, Nutritionist, Beach Chiropractic Practical tips to improve your energy level The Networking Committee for the Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that the speaker for our next ‘Breakfast at the Beach’ on Thursday June 13th at 7:00 - 8:30 a.m. will be Regina Featherstone, Nutritionist. The Breakfast will be held at Marlwood Golf Course, 31 Marlwood Ave., Wasaga Beach. Regina will be discussing ideas on how we can wake up our body to feel more energetic and fantastic all day long. Remember those days, when you were young and felt great and the day just did not seem long enough? Unfortunately these great feelings become a distant memory as we hit our forties and fifties. Can we turn the clock back again? Regina feels we can, learn how to get your energy back, be refreshed in the morning and how to feel more energetic and therefore more productive through your workday Regina Featherstone is the Holistic Nutritional Consultant at Beach Chiropractic and Wellness Centre in Wasaga Beach. Regina graduated from the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition in 2004 and since then has received certifications as a BioEnergetic (BIE) Practitioner, Reflexologist and Cancer Coach. She is a Registered Orthomolecular Health Practitioner with the International Organization of Nutritional Consultants (I.O.N.C). Nutrition is her passion and she is intrigued how quality food can improve our well-being. Through her past work experience managing a health store kitchen and as mother of a child with specific dietary requirements, she has extensive knowledge in preparing tasty and healthy meals. She uses her knowledge to work with clients on a one on one basis and to hold health seminars on topics such as weight management, cancer prevention and healthy living. The Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Networking Committee are delighted to welcome Regina as our speaker for what we believe will be a very interesting and informative talk on simple tips to improve your energy level. Point of View Fighting the Time Bandits by Michael Dalton Johnson
Work eight hours a day. That's it. The rest of the day is yours. You can get a lot done in eight hours. In fact, eight hours is an eternity. If you don't believe this, fly coach for eight hours seated next to a crying infant. You'll get a keen understanding of just how long it is. Consider the time you devote to productive work as your "Golden Eight." Golden because time is indeed money especially if you are in sales. Working a solid, focused eight hours can be difficult. Every day time bandits knock on your door. Members of this mob include personal phone calls and texting, bull sessions with co-workers, checking personal email, looking for lost things, (Highly productive people have clean and wellorganized desks.) personal errands, long breaks and longer lunches...the list goes on. It all adds up. Research shows that, on average, salespeople waste two hours a day. This works out to be a startling three months a year! How much can you sell in three months? By far the biggest time bandit is the Internet. While the web is an indispensable business, communication, education and research tool, it is also highly addictive. Like most addictions, it can devour your precious time, energy and productivity and, by extension, your income. Take it from a recovering Internet addict, if you are serious about increasing your productivity you will avoid these Internet time bandits: Social Networking. Sure it's fun to share photos and news with friends and family but it also diminishes your productivity. Do it after hours. Online Videos. That hilarious video of the cute little kitten playing ping pong is a must see... but not during the Golden Eight you've devoted to work. News and Blogs. Offering lively writing, lots of photos and tempting links to other sites and news items, these are powerfully addictive. Stay off them during work. Shopping. The Internet is open 24 hours a day. Shop before or after work hours. Surfing the web. There's a lot out there to see. It's interesting and entertaining but a pointless drain on your precious time. All That Other Stuff. Online games, auctions, adult sites, chat rooms, job sites, dating sites, vacation and travel sites are all major workplace no-no’s. Carpe Diem! Each morning take a few moments to write down what you want to accomplish that day. This does not have to be an hour-by-hour work plan. It can simply state the work activities that will give you the highest return on your time. Allow yourself a little flexibility, but follow your plan. You'll be on your way to much greater productivity. You'll enjoy the feeling of knowing you've put in an honest and productive eight hours. You'll look forward with much greater appreciation to the 16 hours left for rest, relaxation, friends, family and maybe a little time on the Internet.

“Internet Fraud Prevention” Internet fraud can and does take many forms. It could be the unsolicited e-mail you received telling you there is a problem with your bank account or computer. Or its from a bank manager or lawyer from a distance country who picked you to help hide some cash. It could be that so called technician from a software company who calls you on the telephone and tells you there is a problem with your computer and if you log on and go to a certain site they can fix it for you. Or you browse the Internet's many “buy and sell” sites looking for that item you need or want at that bargain basement price and when you find it and send money to buy it, it never comes. All frauds take advantage of people and with the Internet the opportunities are endless. I would like to offer the following tips to prevent you from becoming a victim of Internet fraud: If you are concerned about your bank account, contact your bank by either going physically to your branch, calling them using a phone number you find in a telephone book, not the one in the email, or the bank's actual web site not the link provide in the e-mail. Be wary of unsolicited e-mails. If you do not know the originator, consider deleting it unopened. If it is a scam, just by opening it could notify whoever sent it that the IP address is active and you will probably get more unsolicited e-mails. If some unknown person is claiming to be a technician from a wellknown software company, calls you and tells you your computer has a problem or is in danger. Ask yourself “how do they know?”, since the last time you were on your computer it worked fine or in some cases you do not have a computer. Then they tell you they can fix the problem if you give them access to your computer. That same computer you do your banking on or buying items using a credit card and has financial and personal information on it. Never give control of your computer to anyone you do not know and trust. ·Know who you are sending your money to. Do some research, before you buy. Thoroughly understand what you are purchasing, the process, any guarantees and the complaint process, if you do not get what you bought. Keep your anti-virus and spyware up to date. ·Ensure your Firewall is on at all times and working properly ·Only download from web sites you know and trust. Failing to do so could cause you to download a virus unknown and unintentionally that could wipe out your computer, or first take all your personal information and then wipe it out. ·Backup all personal, financial and important files on an external removable drive.
We thought it was time for a bit of fun, so we asked you to let us know the little signs that show you’re a true teacher. You came up with some hilarious suggestions – we’ve listed the best below:
You know you’re a teacher when…
You get excited in the box section at Ikea You know you're a teacher when everything you touch is "laminated for protection" Politicians tell you how to do your job The sound of someone playing with Velcro causes you to bite your tongue and glare. You've just started relaxing on a quiet beach somewhere faraway and you hear "Hiya miss!" Everywhere you go and everything you see is assessed on its contribution to a future lesson. You can't read ANYTHING with spelling or grammatical errors without wanting to correct it. The only pen you can find is red. Finding a new pack of glue sticks past April can reduce you to tears of happiness. You feel the urge to tell kids off when out shopping You still wake up at stupid o'clock in the holidays You’re the only person in your family in compulsory education is in their 50s You have to actively repress the urge to tell adults to be quiet when they talk over each other. Your ability to detect lies & spot contraband would be better suited to a career in the Mounties. The sound of children laughing and being Remember to check out my next “On Duty” article in Beach raucous in a perfectly acceptable public place Booster! makes you twitch. A weekend camping includes 100 students and a Arowhon expedition You dread the August Civic Holiday, not count down to it .

Established in 1988 and located at 1004 Mosley St near Beach 3. SATURDAY Wasaga Waffles. Weekends will never be the same! You must try their BERRY BONANZA: A delicious waffle topped with fresh strawberries, blueberries and raspberries, vanilla ice cream, strawberry sauce, blueberry sauce and real whipped cream. We were pleased to have Gary Cerantola, Chair of WBSFF, drop by our Beach Booster Radio Studio to give us an update on our third annual film festival. The second annual film festival resulted in great success, surpassing the Committee Members expectations. The film festival is becoming a launch pad for filmmakers. Eden Watt Remme, Platinum Award winner for “Clifton Goes to the Beach”, evolved her Clifton character to produce “Clifton R.A.P.” which showcased with a trailer via Cinecoup Film Accelerator. The WBSFF is revving up into action with a free workshop hosted by the Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with Collingwood's Switch Video and Henry's Photos scheduled Thursday, June 6th at the Waterside Retirement Lodge in Wasaga Beach. The workshop is designed to help our local businesses to create their own video advertisements and to encourage them to submit their videos to the film festival. Entry submission rolled out May 1st and will run until October 15th, 2013. Gary indicated three new categories have been added to the line up: General (English/French films), Smartphone and Sportcam. These latest additions will lessen the requirements for our local affiliations by fostering outside filmmakers. An inflatable outdoor screen was purchased and should be ready to launch for the first Wasaga event in July. The first two seasons of the film festival, plus promotional videos will be featured as well as if you enter your video ad you can see it 8-12 times a year at all major town events. The Committee is planning a contest to “Name That Screen”. This year's film festival is going “Bollywood Hollywood” the format will be a little different using trailers of the winners, more entries and more entertaining. “This is a great event for our town” Gary exclaimed. “Our main industry being tourism where 2 million visitors a year come to the beach. With the film festival, this can promote our events in town and the spin off of this is there's a very serious creative economy going on in our area because of the lifestyle and the quality of life that this community offers people. There are people out there that are professionals, artist, musicians, film producers and this film festival will attract these people and we will make room for them in our events. We are moving forward to a great vision and the quality and the quantity of entries as we go through the years will expand and create opportunities for people who want come to this area and do films.” Gary's vision of “Think Sundance North” feels our community can be the next film festival with our longest fresh water beach in the world and eco rated as Blue Flag. We are a key destination with our close proximity to Pearson Airport. “Sundance Film Festival” was a resort town and started from meager beginnings. Gary says: “We need to find our Redford to get us kick started and we are going to work in finding our Redford.” Dianna Chycki is host of Beach Corner and Committee Member of the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival. Beach Corner broadcast weekly Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

There is a famous quote made by Albert Einstein that says; "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." “Canadian municipal governments, like most others around the world, carry a general mandate to plan, manage and maintain communities, infrastructure and land. They take direct, often immediate action to solve problems and provide the basic conditions for a good quality of life. They plan, manage and deliver essential services, develop long-term plans, establish policies and implement programs for local economic development, as well as social and environmental sustainability. And like most municipalities worldwide, Canadian municipal governments face numerous challenges. Their search for new ways of delivering services is motivated by the same pressures: inadequate revenue and restricted authority accompanied by growing responsibilities. Citizens and national governments expect municipalities to address the issues of development: poverty and disease, environmental degradation, social decay, safety and security concerns, emergency measures, infrastructure breakdown, and stress on the basics of public transportation, solid waste management and provision of potable water.” Your Guide to Municipal Institutions in Canada; Authors: Louise Quesnel, Professor, Laval University (Quebec, Canada), with the collaboration of Sébastien Hamel, Regional Manager, Asia, FCM's International Centre for Municipal Development. Publication Date: March 2007 So what’s our problem today? We are doing everything on the fly and cannot understand why it takes so much time and effort to resolve any issues at all. Our politicians are “crazy busy” grappling with trying to make things happen with little resources to leverage provincial and national politicians and don’t have the capacity to deal with the efforts it takes to move these mountains. A new approach: If there was ever a time to get strategic and operate from a disciplined base of project management and supporting organizational structure it is now. Our approach must incorporate a stronger sense of purpose through a shared vision and a pragmatic strategic plan assisted by a robust issues management system that delineates priorities and doability with the capability of results oriented execution supported by a project management system. And as form follows function, a new structure is required to support better governance, clearly defined roles and introduce portfolio responsibility so that issues management is done on a continual long term basis and not seasonal as issues peak in requirements at certain times of the year. Sound technical? It sure is. Our environment has gotten too complex to be managed by the seat of our pants. We need more rigour, more functionality, more accountability and more transparency. Beach BOOSTER is here to help and enrich this community. Please send me your thoughts and comments at Gary@beachBOOSTER.com on how we make our efforts count.
A Town Named Hythe: Wasaga Beach with a railway & harbour? In the 1840s, the area around Wasaga Beach began to grow. It was logging country then and as the industry expanded, there was a need for better ways of getting timber to market. By the 1840s, many were dreaming of a railway that would connect Georgian Bay with Toronto, but a lack of funds and an uncertain political climate scotched the scheme. Revived in 1844 and again in 1851, several routes were surveyed, two of which led to the mouth of the Nottawasaga River. Plans for a town to be named Hythe to be established at the river’s end were made and a boom was expected. Establishing a commercial harbour at the river mouth was indeed possible since schooners, tugs, and the steamers of the day could easily navigate the lower reaches of the Nottawasaga. And then in 1852, an event occurred that influenced the future of Wasaga Beach. A large schooner out of Buffalo arrived on the bay but was caught in a storm as it anchored offshore where it was to be loaded with grain taken out to it by small scows. The doomed schooner should have been able to enter the river for safety but drawing to much water, it was caught in the open shallow bay. Waves battered the schooner until it ran aground and broke up, becoming a complete loss. The wreck of that Buffalo vessel turned out to be the deciding factor in the decision to end a rail line at Collingwood, several dozen kilometers to the west. Had this one storm not occurred when it did, the railway would have come to Wasaga Beach and industry and commerce would have followed. For years following the wreck, the beach area would only be used for logging and fishing. Development would have to wait.

Natural Medicine: Separating Fact From Fiction Natural Immune Modulation After 50: Why it should be part of your anti-cancer strategy by James Meschino DC, MS, ND, ROHP Data shows that cancer incidence increases dramatically after the age of 50 for many common cancers (i.e. breast, colon, prostate). According to many researchers, weakening of immune function is partly to blame for the escalation in cancer risk as we age. When functioning optimally, immune cells are responsible for hunting down and destroying emerging cancer cells before they have a chance to multiply into life-threatening tumors. However, the age-related shrinkage (involution) of the thymus gland results in less efficient immune cell function, with an established increased risk of certain infections and cancer. As aptly detailed by Drs R. Aspinall and D. Andrew (J Clin Immunology 2000) T cells (an important group of immune cells) in older individuals fail to respond to stimuli as efficiently as T cells from younger individuals. The thymus gland serves as a type of boot camp for T-cells, teaching them how to use their weapons efficiently to track down and kill cancer cells, as well as many invading germs (bacteria, candida, viruses) that can cause infection. As the thymus gland shrinks, during our adult years, our immune system weakens, and we become increasingly more susceptible to cancer and certain life-threatening infections. Keep Your Immune System Strong after 50 With B-glucans Although there is no way to completely revitalize our thymus gland after age 50, studies suggest that we can keep your immune system functioning more optimally, even in face of age-dependent thymus gland shrinkage. In this regard I am referring to supplementation with natural agents that contain Bglucans – nature’s immune booster. Beta- glucans are a type of polysaccharide (zero calorie containing long sugar-like molecules) commonly found in various medicinal mushrooms. My favourite is reishi mushroom extact, as reishi contains large beta-glucans fractions, which are
known to possess the most potent immune stimulatory effects, and reishi mushrooms also contain other natural agents shown to have direct cancer cell killing effects (ganoderic acid, tritperenes). Experimental studies, animal studies and preliminary human studies indicate that supplementation with beta-glucans –containing supplements increase the efficiency of immune cells. In fact, many immune cells have beta-glucans receptors on their surface. When beta-glucans attach to the receptor, the immune cells respond in a way the makes them much more efficient and youthful in their ability to identify and kill cancer cells and various pathogens (bacteria, virsues etc). Another rich source of beta-glucans includes the herb astragalus. Many studies involving astragalus have shown impressive immune optimization and anti-cancer effects as well. For this reason, I routinely recommend that patients over the age of 50 take a supplement containing meaningful doses of reishi mushroom extract, astragalus, milk thistle and indole-3 carbinol, as part of an effective immune-support program at this critical time stage in life. Milk thistle and indole-3 carbinol help to prevent the age-related decline in detoxification function, which is also linked to increased cancer risk after age 50. Here is an example of an Immune and Detoxification Support supplement I take each day: The Daily Dosage (2 capsules) contain: Reishi mushroom extract – 60 mg (standardized to 10% polysaccharides, 4% triterpenes) Astragalus – 200 mg (2:1 extract) Milk thistle – 300 mg (standardized to 80% silymarin) Indole-3 carbinol – 50 mg (97% grade)

10 Other Lifelong Immune Support Strategies Include: 1. Minimize alcohol intake, as well as refined sugars 2. Don’t smoke 3. Manage stress effectively 4. Get sufficient rest 5. Take a high potency multiple vitamin and mineral supplement daily (containing 1000 mg vitamin C, 400 IU vitamin E, 200 mcg selenium, 1000 IU vitamin D) 6. Consider additional vitamin D supplementation if your vitamin D blood level remains below 80nmol/L 7. Get moderate exercise and avoid over weight problems 8. Consume garlic and onions regularly 9. Consider a probiotic supplement 10. Consider taking a melatonin supplement after 40 (one hour before bedtime). Some immune cells also have melatonin receptors. Melatonin declines with age, which appears to also contribute to immune system weakening. To see my short video summarizing immune system support go to the following link: http://goo.gl/mWcGU

Nottawa Hotel that featured a dining room and tavern on The Point
Wasaga Beach once enjoyed an active and resort town atmosphere along its World Famous beachfront. Prior to Ontario Parks taking over the beachfront in Wasaga Beach, the business centre of town was our Historic Main Street and along the beachfront in both directions from Main Street. These photos show the busy beach on "The Point" (between Nottawasaga Bay and the river) with its active businesses and attractions. A more recent photo shows "The Point" now consisting of parking areas.

Approx. Pop. 2100. In Tiny Township., Simcoe County., on Consession Rd., 26, 10 km West of Midland. The place was first known as St. Croix because of the many crosses erected there by Father Jean Louis Hennepin, a missionary sent from France to Canada in 1675. The second time the place was settled was in the 1830's when disbanded French-Canadian soldiers came to take up grants of land they had been assigned. They named the community Lafontaine to honour Sir Louis Hippolyte LaFontaine, joint premier of United Canada from 1848 to 1851, with Robert Baldwin. Lafontaine survived well into the 20th century as the only Ontario settlement of any size where English was not spoken, but by the 1940's most residents were bilingual.
