With OPP P.C. Mark Kinney ANNUAL COMMUNITY POLICING COMMITTEE’S PROPERTY & BICYCLE AUCTION

This annual event is on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at the rear parking lot of the Huronia West OPP Station at 1000 River Road West in Wasaga Beach. Viewing of the property items starts at 12:00 p.m. and goes until 1:00 p.m. when the auction starts. The auction will continue for 2 hours or until all auction items have been dealt with, we hope that will be by 3:00 p.m. This year we will have a barbeque to feed the hungry appetites of the auction goers all food items are at a reasonable cost and Mr. Steve Green is back again as our auctioneer. At this year's auction we will have over 30 previously loved bicycles; we have Trek, Schwinn, CCM, Kona, Norco and Raleigh to name a few. They are in good condition but need some TLC, like filling the tires with air or fixing a brake cable. And yes we have some bicycles that would challenge even the best bicycle mechanic's skills to make them road worthy again. In addition we have several GPS units including Garmin and Nexton, a dehumidifier, mini flashlights, a couple of IPODs, a Football, brand name backpacks and new socks, not to mention we have a TV to auction off. We also have this year a small quantity of jewelry including necklaces, bracelets and wedding rings. Please note all jewelry has been appraised and will have a starting bid. We may even have some last minute electronics showing up at this year's auction, but no promises, you will have to attend to find out. In total we will have in excess of 100 auction items at this year's auction. All auction proceeds will be shared and used by the Clearview, Springwater and Wasaga Beach Community Policing Committees to run safety and crime prevention initiatives in their communities. Some of these programs include annual bursaries to graduating High School students, Bicycle helmet coupon program for youth, anti-graffiti program for both home and business and all the above Community Policing Committees deploy and maintain Speed Monitoring Signs in our communities to increase road safety for all users. Please come out on Saturday, June 22nd, 2013 between 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. and support your local Community Policing Committee in raising money to continue their great work in our communities. Last year's auction made just over $2100 for our Community Policing Committees; let's see if we can pass that number this year! For further information on this event please contact me during regular business hours at 1705-429-3575 or preferably via e-mail at mark.kinney@ontario.ca Remember to check out my next “On Duty” article in Beach Booster!

Point of View Beauty and the Feast: When Print Meets Digital When an interest becomes a passion, you want to know more about it, seek out new information, share your knowledge and passion with others and find a community that's enthusiastic about the same thing. Magazines, catalogs and artist portfolios are just a few ways to find and share your interests. The Internet is another - a search can reveal basic information about practically any topic and online hubs of fellow enthusiasts. A magazine, catalog or portfolio is tangible - an object you can hold in your hands and flip through so you can explore your interests in vivid color, with stunning photos and insightful articles all captured in an eye-catching layout. But you can't share it with friends who aren't in the room or use it as a springboard to instantly discover related content. Conversely, an online search is dynamic, but it often lacks the aesthetic quality of print, and you certainly can't page through a collection of links in the same way you can a printed publication. What if there were a way to combine the best of both experiences, a marriage of print and digital that produced a feast of information in a beautiful, glossy format that you could access on any device? What if you could instantly share this digital publication and discover related content on any topic, whether it's cooking, wine, knitting, gluten-free living, sushi, fashion or anything else? What if you could access all these publications - or even create your own - for free? Issuu, the world's fastest growing digital publishing platform with more than 60 million unique visitors per month and 11.5 million publications, launched an update on May 29, 2013 that is revolutionizing the way we experience print content in the same way YouTube and Spotify changed how we access videos and music, both as consumers and as artists and publishers. For readers, Issuu is a way to immerse themselves in stacks of content curated by those who share their interests and discover upand-coming publications before the rest of the world. For professional and casual publishers along with artists, Issuu provides an opportunity to find inspiration and stoke the creative fire while connecting with an expansive global audience. Issuu has tens of millions of readers from around the globe, all seeking information on topics ranging from architecture to zoology. The platform delivers beautiful layouts and high resolution photos readers can page through on their iPhone, iPad, laptop or any other connected device. Since basic publishing is free, there are no more barriers to self-expression: Aspiring artists, chefs, crafters, decorators, fashionistas, sports experts, issues advocates and political commentators are free to go out and find their audience. They'll find themselves in good company: In addition to hosting millions of niche publications on virtually every topic, Issuu hosts many major magazines, including edgy publications like VICE and Huck, Anthology Magazine for home design, the Armani and Swell collection catalogs and the work of well-known architects, photographers and artists like Tom Sachs. So what are you waiting for? Go immerse yourself in the publication that speaks to your interests. Or create it. (Editor’s Note: beach BOOSTER is distributed ONLINE via ISSUU)

Local Teenager Plans To Ride Across Canada For Charity Simcoe County-Ayden’s ride is a summer-long cycle across Canada in support of United Way. Ayden Green will be cycling across Canada to raise awareness and funds for United Way within the local communities he passes through. At the age of 5, Ayden Green was diagnosed with mild cerebral palsy. Although mild, he spent a lot of time in occupational therapy, physical therapy and botox therapy having to wear plastic leg braces and leg castings. At the age of 8 he was diagnosed with a nonverbal learning disability and asperger's syndrome, a form of autism. While Ayden was navigating all this, he never paused or forgot to smile. He had to figure out how to live in a world that expects him to adapt to it and he had some struggles. Now he's 15 years old and wants to give back. He still has to figure out his way in this world but he knows he couldn't have come this far without the support of all the doctors, nurses, therapists and organizations. Each one of them have been supported in some way by the United Way of Canada. So, you can see how proud he is to support United Way. Ayden will be following his hero, Terry Fox’s route from Newfoundland through the Golden Horseshoe and back on to the Trans Canada Highway to British Columbia.

FRIDAY Celebrate the end of a long week with a rich and full flavored cherry ice cream loaded with big pieces of sweet black Bordeaux cherries. SATURDAY A famous tourist destination and the original landmark ice cream parlour, Lorna Dune has been swirling soft ice cream since 1955. One lick and you’ll remember your childhood summers. Choose the large dipped cones! 3373 Mosley Street, west end of town near Beach 6. SUNDAY A seriously Sunday treat has got to be a sweet storm. Love it to bits! “Helping the United Way helps me give back to those who have helped me in the past. I wanted to use my love of biking to help a great organization. It’s awesome that I have a family who is willing to support me in this. Ever since I got the idea a year ago, we have been working towards this goal. At first I thought it was just an idea, but then I realized I could actually do something. I’m excited to be doing this, to see Canada and to help other people.” said Ayden Green. Together, with the vision of Ayden’s Ride in support of United Way we can promote a cause whose impact will be felt for years and inspire future action from others. New Adventures at Skull Island this Year I recently invited Garry and Ryan Sawatsky, father and son duo who own and created Skull Island Adventure Golf to our Beach Booster Radio studio for an interview. Inspired by children's fantasies of pirates, they constructed a 10-foot-high skull that greets you at the gate and a 37-foot long pirate ship located in the 29,000 square foot park. Both Garry and Ryan want to be the next icon in town by bringing something contemporary and exciting to the tourist that visit Wasaga Beach. It all started with Ryan who discovered our beautiful Georgian Bay but felt it lacked some family entertainment. He decided to relocate his family from Toronto to Wasaga Beach and soon his Dad, Garry, followed to team up with his son in business. They came up with the idea of a creating a family entertainment park based on a tropical pirate theme due to its location. The mini golf business is not new to Garry and Ryan, so far, they've created over 17 amusement parks. Garry says: “It's becoming a matter of science.” Both very creative in their craft, Ryan learned how to sculpt from his Dad, and Garry's artistic creation is in murals, having done several in the past. The Sawatzky Family Foundation (SFF) was formed six years ago. They are one of the main financial supporters of SOPUDEP (Society of Providence United for the Economic Development of Petion-Ville) Haitian program. The SFF collects 10% of the profits, providing free accessible education to adults and children, and supports women's rights and economic empowerment for the poor. This foundation is one of Ryan's passions. Ryan explains: “The SFF was created specifically to provide a bridge from here to there and be able to provide tax deductible receipts and to provide advocacy to support these groups.” Entering their second year, they've listened to their customers and are bringing some changes making it a little more challenging. New at Skull Island this year are a number of obstacles on the course adding eight new challenges with more glitz and new features. They've also reduced the price by $2.00 and added a seniors rate. Next on the horizon is a new business venture in town effective July 1st “Kowabunga Paddle” specializing in stand up paddle and kayak rentals. Garry explained: “Last summer we spent time looking at people on the beach and there were a lot of daytime trippers. We saw a need to provide something for them to do on the water since there were no toys on the water, and together we started thinking a rental business would be great. The fastest growing sport in the world is Paddle boarding.” Stand up paddle boarding is a good way for the average person of getting that surf feeling. In five years their goal is to have a very polished high level family entertainment in the town and would like to build memories for the future generations. For more information you can visit their website at www.skullisland.ca.

Tipping Point Changing Wasaga Beach Lives Gary Cerantola; gary@beachBOOSTER.com

Theodore Pringle Loblaw Where’s the Wasaga Beach Silent Majority I can’t help but feel a bit disturbed about the tone and attitude of the local people that were interviewed in the recent June 7 – 9th weekend CTV News segment "Wasaga Beach bars without liquor licences”. In short, the tone in their voices was plain old “apathy”.

It’s a simple concept; healthy beachfront businesses mean a healthy local economy. A healthy local economy means that more businesses will migrate to Wasaga Beach and invest in the community. The more local businesses thriving in Wasaga Beach the higher the level of services available to its visitors and residents. This in turn attracts major investors. When major investors come to our community we create a sustainable condition where the community will remain vibrant and healthy. How do you think we can leave it to others to attract major investors to our town if the general sentiment of the community itself does not demonstrate that Wasaga Beach is the place to be? Why should this matter? Well one very good reason would be our house prices. For all of us Beach residents who think, well it will be less bothersome traffic and just more unencumbered time at the beach for us locals, think again. Personally, I wonder how this is ultimately going to transfer into the “sale price” of my home when I want to finally get away from yard maintenance and shovelling my own snow. Right now, our existing strategy of attracting new comers from the GTA that cash in and move here to retire is basically a one trick pony strategy. Once the community reaches a certain size this temporary lift to the economy is over. Take a look at one industry towns across Canada and look at their history. There are not a lot of them left. What makes us think that Wasaga Beach would be any different? If we have nothing to sustain the local economy but people moving here where does that leave us twenty years from now when all these people need more services as elder seniors and we don’t have the means to support them. Will the province be in any better financial shape to provide us grants? If we keep sending signals that we really don’t care about our visitors and what happens at the Beach, how do you suppose the politicians at all levels will behave? It will be more “steady” as she goes, control costs without new sustainable revenues and keep marginalizing the capability of the town and the area to do anything innovative or growth oriented. It’s a slippery slope from here on in. Is that what we really want? Where’s the silent majority on this? If we don’t show that we care where do you think we will be in 20 years? Beach BOOSTER is here to help and enrich this community. Please send me your thoughts and comments at Gary@beachBOOSTER.com on how we make our efforts count.

Elmvale was once the home of one of Canada’s outstanding businessmen, a man who left his name in the world of supermarkets – Theodore Loblaw. Loblaw was born in Elmvale in 1872. After his parents death, he was raised by grandparents on a farm outside Alliston. In the 1890s, he headed to Toronto to begin his career in retail grocery. He was 17 and had only twenty dollars in his pocket. Eventually, he found a position clerking in W. C. Cork’s grocery store on King Street. By 1900, this poor farm boy had been able to buy an interest in a store on College Street along with his employer’s son, J. Milton Cork whose partnership he would enjoy for the rest of his life. A decade later, the pair operated a chain of 19 small stores that were later sold to Dominion Stores Company. In 1919, Theodore put in place his idea of the “groceteria” – derived from combining the operation of a cash-and-carry grocery with a self-service cafeteria. Five years later, he had expanded into the United States with a chain in Buffalo and within four years, the company had 65 stores in Ontario and annual sales of fourteen million. At the time of Theodore Loblaw’s death in 1933, The Company’s chain of self-service stores numbered some 107 in Ontario and 50 in New York State. As one historian has noted, ”The success of the Loblaw Groceterias worked a revolution in retail merchandizing.” Theodore Pringle Loblaw of Elmvale, Simcoe County, was a merchant, innovator, chain store president and philanthropist.

Ground Flaxseed Shown to Reduce High Blood Pressure Dr James Meschino DC, MD, ND

Penetanguishene Approx. Pop. 10,000. In Tiny and Tay Townships., Simcoe County., on Penetang Harbour off Georgian Bay and Hwy. 93, 53 km NW of Barrie. In the 1600's the was the site of an Ojibway encampment named Wenrio and later another Indian settlement named Ihonatiria. In 1793 Lieutenant-Governor Simcoe chose the place as a naval headquarters and military post, which was active during the War of 1812. The fort garrisoned that year was Fort Penetanguishene, an Indian name meaning “white rolling sand.” the first civilian home was built by Dedin Revolte in 1828. The property once occupied by the fort is now a provincial jail for the criminally insane. St. James-on-theLines Anglican Church, built to serve the military personnel stationed at the fort is still in use today. Its name derives from the line, or communications road, from Toronto to Penetanguishene. The church has a very wide central aisle to permit soldiers to march in, four abreast. The pews are all different from each other, their construction having been assigned to different men of the garrison.

Main Street and Main Beach Since the early part of this century, our Main Beach… and our Main Street has been the hub of our tourism industry and an entertainment centre! Our Main Street became a vibrant and exciting place to shop, meet, dine and be entertained… while our grand beachfront hotels rivaled those anywhere and welcomed visitors with their modern facilities offering the most beautiful beach and views in the world. Great entertainment was available everywhere in the Main Beach area… including Playland Park… one of Canada’s Largest Amusement Parks! For years we have had dreams of building on what was created in the glory years of Wasaga Beach when we were known as Canada’s Premiere Beachfront Resort! In the sixties, we had reached a point where although we had all in place… we needed to stay in tune with what the tourists of the day were looking for! Beach BOOSTER is pleased to be bring some fun and entertainment back to our Historic Main Street this summer, in hopes to bring families back to this important part of town. On the Saturday of Canada Day Weekend, head down to Historic Main Street at our World Famous Main Beach for Rockin’ The Beach! In mid August we are looking forward to presenting the 2nd Annual Back to The Beach Festival on this same stretch of Main Street right at our Main Beach. Our Main Street and Main Beach must be revitalized and once again be recognized as the commercial and entertainment hub of our tourism industry!

Special Report AWOI and Anime North Dianna Chycki

A

nime North is Canada's premier fan-run anime convention. This year's event took place on the weekend of May 24th to May 26th at the Toronto Congress Centre. It is a three-day event of anime, manga, music and games celebrating Japanese culture. A total of 15,000 attendees encompassing in one weekend averaging 5,000 people per day with each year setting a new record of attendance. This convention includes panels with industry experts, cosplaying competitions, games, vendor area, dances, concerts and more. It's where manga characters called “cosplaying” come to life. Thousands of people dressed in their favourite costumes with some creations custom made for this once a year special event. It's also an opportunity to meet some Japanese rock bands, thanks to J-Rock North Promotions, Inc. Every year J-Rock North Promotions invites talented artists from Japan to perform at the Toronto Congress Centre, in Hall “C”. This is your chance to experience Japanese visual kei rock music. Visual Kei is known as a lifestyle and philosophy that goes beyond the clothing and music. This year, AWOI, a band from Osaka, made their first international live appearance at Anime North while on their “ONEMAN” tour. AWOI considered a darker version of Visual Kei – a punk influenced Marilyn Mason style supported by the lead singer, Otogi – their music is loud and is also known to be dirty and sweaty – a crowd pleaser for our Canadian fans. AWOI has a definite style all on their own. AWOI released a new single on April 3rd “Zetsubou no taiyou” translated means “Sun of Despair”. Since this single release the band announced at their one-man live tour “Zetsubou no taiyou” final in Japan that their new CD will be out in the fall. The title has not yet been finalized. AWOI was formed in 2004 by OTOGI (vocal) and SHOU (guitar). This is a first overseas tour for the band and they were quite excited to be in Canada. Needless to say, the band enjoyed our Canadian hospitality. The band appeared in association with Face Music and J-Rock North Promotions, Inc. Prior to interviewing AWOI, I met up with UMBRELLA in the hallway of the Toronto Congress Centre, and the band members were quick to introduce themselves and took time to chat in English. UMBRELLA members are: YUI, vocal/guitar; SYU, guitar; HAL, bass and SHO, drums. I found them to be very friendly and interested in our Canadian culture – especially when I mentioned our famous “maple syrup” it certainly was a conversation piece. UMBRELLA was looking forward to their performance that night and to introduce their music to Canadian fans. When asked for a photo the band didn't hesitate for this opportunity. They were quite complimentary. I must admit that Syu looked a lot like Hitsugi from Nightmare and seemed flattered of the resemblance. The band took time to browse the convention where photos were taken with some of our cosplayers. Due to scheduling, I wasn't able to interview UMBRELLA, this is one band that will be on my list of future interviews when they return to Canada. I was then whisked into one of the rooms to meet with AWOI for an up close and personal interview.
