Point of View Important Local News Flash!
Industry is coming to Wasaga Beach! We have coasted through May and June... and NOW, Canada Day Long Weekend is upon us with the rest of Summer ahead! Industry is important to any community, not only for commercial tax revenue to assist in providing the services we all demand, but to provide local jobs and create a vibrant and active town. Industry is coming to Wasaga Beach and we should all be prepared to welcome it. This industry will not be manufacturing with its possible harmful effects on the environment, nor will it be high tech, with its glass office buildings. The industry coming to Wasaga Beach involves all of us lucky enough to live here, giving us the opportunity to welcome people to our wonderful town while generating smiles and memories that will last for generations. This industry is Tourism! Our village/town has enjoyed welcoming tourists since before the McLean family built the original Capstan Inn on the beach in 1911. Soon afterwards the construction of our last remaining historic building in The Beach, The Dardanella opened in 1918! Although we boast 14 kilometres of beautiful one of kind beach and a lot of diverse and rewarding activities throughout our town, we must concentrate on our commercial tourism hub, what we now call Beach Area One. Since the early 1900's, this has been the focal point… and the 3 block area of commercial space should continue to be a vibrant and important part of our industry! With the long drawn out failure of our Main Beach commercial area, we should concentrate on working with and helping the hard working, dedicated small business owners who continue and are eager to again make this an exciting and welcoming area. Much of this area is owned by the municipality and should be used to help move forward in bringing health and vibrancy to our only industry. Our commercial beachfront area needs to be more than bars and retail catering to day trippers. It deserves to be a “Showcase on the Shore”… or attempt to live up to its suggested title, “Ontario's Riviera”. Family friendly businesses are there and Beach BOOSTER continues to present “Family Friendly” events at our Main Beach, including Rockin' The Beach on Saturday of the Canada Day Long Weekend. Where else in this country, is there a beachfront like ours… with the best sunsets in the world, surrounded by a town of great, welcoming folks who appreciate how lucky we are to enjoy this place… while still being eager to share? All of this, within a couple of hours drive, on good highways, from one of the largest population densities on the continent! Let's work on promoting our industry and show our future guests what we have to offer and work together to show them we want them to come back, time and time again! This is our one and only industry and it indeed involves all of us! Get ready to smile, extend a friendly hand and say “Welcome to Wasaga Beach! How can we help you enjoy your stay?”

With OPP P.C. Mark Kinney “Keeping the Community Safe & Reducing Crime through Information Sharing” Roundabouts “Yield means Yield!” It has been just over 6 months since we, or should I say some of us had our first experience on our new Roundabouts or Roundabouts in general. That experience could have ranged from; no problem, to sheer terror or what the heck do I do? We’re now going to have yet another Roundabout at Beachwood Drive and Mosley. Yes the local municipalities and Ministry of Transportation offered seminars that covered aspects of safe travel through roundabouts, but many did not and or could not attend, life is busy. Although we may not be used to using roundabouts, they are not new and do offer several benefits over traditional intersections some of these are: Improved safety - reducing the number of vehicle conflict points and reducing vehicle speeds, in turn, reduces the potential for severe crashes and serious injury Reduced speeds - a reduction in speed is necessary to negotiate the roundabout, whereas vehicles may not slow down during the green phase of a traffic signal Increased capacity – a higher volume of left turning vehicles is better handled by a roundabout than a multiphased traffic signal Fewer stops and reduced delays - delay is significantly reduced by yielding at the entry of a roundabout, rather than stopping and waiting for a green light at a traffic light; or waiting for a gap in the traffic at a stop sign Less idling and air pollution – reduced delays mean reduced fuel consumption and improved air quality by reducing emissions Reduced maintenance costs – the roundabout eliminates maintenance and electricity costs associated with traffic lights To help those who still are unsure on how to safely use a roundabout and to remind those who jeopardize other motorists by using the roundabout as a mogul on a slalom course as they dangerously cut others off as they travel straight though, I offer the following tips: 1)Slow down as you approach the roundabout, look to see what vehicles are already in the roundabout 2)Vehicles in the roundabout move in a counter-clockwise direction 3)Choose the correct entry lane a.To turn left or to go straight choose the INSIDE lane b.To turn right or to go straight choose the OUTSIDE lane 4)Traffic in the roundabout has the right-of-way, you must Yield to those motorists 5)Do not enter the roundabout unless it is safe to do so, if the roundabout is busy you may have to stop 6)Only enter the roundabout when there is an adequate gap in the circulating traffic 7)Give large vehicles extra space to manouevre 8)Avoid passing other vehicles in the roundabout 9)Watch for pedestrians crossing the roadway when approaching or exiting the roundabout 10)Signal your exit Using and practicing the above tips will make your travels through roundabouts a safe and enjoyable one. For more information about Ontario’s Roundabouts including an educational video, brochure and driving tips please visit: www.ontario.ca/roundabout For other safe driving tips and driving information please visit: http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/ Remember to check out my next “On Duty” article in Beach Booster!

Theatre Collingwood Expands Into Year-Round Programming Theatre Collingwood launched their new 2013 summer season that runs from June to September 30th at the historic Gayety Theatre. The company will be offering five live plays with 44 performances this summer. Harold Bickerstaff, Chair of Directors and Erica Angus, Executive Director of Theatre Collingwood visited Beach Corner at our Beach Booster Radio station to discuss their upcoming season. Theatre Collingwood started in 1984 with a group of visionaries who were part of the arts program in Collingwood. Since then the company has grown and moved their production facilities into the former Enterprise Bulletin building at the corner of Simcoe and Ste. Marie, Their regular summer theatre plays will continue to be performed at the historic Gayety Theatre. According to Harold Bickerstaff “The historic Gayety Theatre has been a landmark in Collingwood since 1900. There are great photos of the theatre around town, at some point it was a Vaudeville House. As a movie house it can hold 350 people and continues to be a major attraction in town. It has brand new seats, new facilities and amenities have been upgraded for all patrons to experience. Theatre Collingwood is a major tenant of the theatre”. There's been some change in the company with the arrival of Erica Angus as Executive Director in January. Erica spent ten years at Theatre By the Bay as associate producer/administrator. She began as a volunteer and worked her way up through the company in a very short period of time and has been busy getting this new season together. Surveys were conducted last year and found that people were interested in year-round theatre with familiar plays. Harold explained: “One of their missions is to move away from producing to presenting products. These products (as we call them) played for many years at other venues. We looked at similar venues in similar sized towns where these plays have already been done, and this is the type of product that people wanted to see. One of the things we did want to do is expand our season this year and we have expanded to five plays but we also gone into some “One night or One Of” plays. We started with the “Judy Garland Story” which was very successful about a month ago now and it is pretty well sold out. Again, it was something people wanted to see.” In November Theatre Collingwood is planning “The Little Prince” a wonderful production for the family and schools along with Scrooge in December. The company will be hosting workshops under the direction of Michael Clipperton. Starting the end of July for the first session and they will continue in the fall. Michael has been a director for 30 years, most recently, he directed Blithe Spirit for Onstage Uxbridge and Jitter for Theatre Aurora. For more information on Theatre Collingwood's summer season or workshops visit their website at www.theatrecollngwood.ca.

Water Slide Approved You'll soon be able to slip, slide and fly on a new attraction at the main beach of Wasaga Beach. At the latest meeting, council approved plans for what's called the Dropkick water slide to go in the Third Street parking lot. It's called the Dropkick because at the end of the 40-foot drop, you are catapulted into the air and land on an inflated, cushioned pad. There will also be a concession stand on site. The operator had hoped to have the attraction up and running by this long weekend, but the equipment is coming from China and there's been a delay and then the operators need time to properly set it up and train staff. The hope is to have the attraction open by the following weekend.

Most people say they are…… but really, change, takes people out of their comfort zone and the first thing that comes to mind with change is what will be lost in the process. There are two things that are vital in order to change: 1. You must connect with what you want. In business terms this is called creating a “shared vision” 2. You must assess where you are with honesty. This way you can truly assess the gap between where you are and where you want to be and make concrete plans to get to that desired end state. Okay, so how does this apply to Wasaga Beach? Larisa Kurzemnieks put it together in a very succinct way, this spring, in her Ryerson University Fine Arts Master’s thesis; “This Way to the Beach (Wasaga Beach) is a photographic exploration into this delicate microclimate where tourists, residents and cottagers coexist, and where promises and failures are as frequent as the coming and going of weekend visitors.” I interpret this statement as not setting the stage properly to help change happen. Leaving the responsibility with outsiders to make changes for us is not a viable option. It can’t be about promises. It must be about collectively accepting a shared vision for the Beach, identify what’s in it for all of us in getting to the place we want to be and working together to make it happen. Otherwise, little old homeostasis better known as “Status Quo” kicks in and pockets of people try to defend what they think they will lose from the overall change and try to derail the process. We have a great vision for this town. I believe the vision created for Beach 1&2 needs to be tested against it otherwise we will not be able to create alignment and draw the engagement and support of talent and resources we already have in Wasaga Beach to get to where we want to go. Maybe you haven’t read our shared vision. Here it is: “Wasaga Beach is a thriving, full-service community, respectful of its history and culture, offering a variety of residential, educational and commercial choices in neighbourhoods, developed in harmony with the environment that provides its residents, businesses and visitors with a full range of services while promoting a healthy lifestyle and high community standards.” This vision shared across our community and shared with investors and developers can be a strong beacon for change with the trust of the community that the right things will be developed and created for the right reasons. Beach BOOSTER is here to help and enrich this community. Please send me your thoughts and comments at Gary@beachBOOSTER.com on what our shared vision means to you.

Fred Char, Burger King Wasaga Beach Some call him “King of The Beach”, some call him Freddie, but all who know Fred Char call him a friend. Fred and his beachfront Burger King in Wasaga Beach has been a local landmark for 20 years and continues to serve locals and visitors each and every summer season, from mid April until Fall. After working for several years with Burger King Canada, Fred and his young family opened his own Burger King at our Main Beach in 1994. Since then, Fred, his wife Christina and two of their daughters, Stephanie and Michelle have run our local Burger King restaurant. If anyone has their finger on the pulse of what happens at our Main Beach, its Fred , as he is usually the one to open in the early hours each morning and often closes long after midnight.
Michelle and Fred
Fred and Christina’s oldest daughter Krystal is a Special Child who, like the rest of the family, loves Wasaga Beach, but resides in Holland Bloorville Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. Fred is a champion of this special needs facility and is always campaigning to help raise funds or the hospital. You can visit Fred’s family page here at this link: http://goo.gl/kp96F
Kystall and Fred
Every summer Fred and his family hire locals to help them through the busy season and enjoys watching his young staff grow up and return to say hello each and every summer. Some staff members over the years have families grow up and then introduce a second generation to the opportunity to work with Fred at his busy Burger King on the beach! No matter what time of day, Fred enjoys locals and visitors of all ages dropping in to say hello and chatting on the Beachfront patio area. Happy Anniversary Fred and Christina! Keep up the good work and we all look forward to having you serve up the good stuff with a smile on our beachfront for another 20 years!

Golf Results OFSC and OFATV Advocate No Riding on Private Land Without Landowner Permission (Barrie, ON April 15, 2013) – The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) and the Ontario Federation of All Terrain Vehicles (OFATV) urge all motorized riders to be responsible by respecting landowner rights. This respect starts with not entering any private land without permission. This means staying off of trails on private land that are not available to any rider during a given season (e.g. OFSC snowmobile trails during non-winter months) or that are available only for the use of a specific rider group during a specific season (e.g. snowmobilers during the winter). All OFSC Prescribed Snowmobile Trails on private land are shut down at the end of each winter and not available again until the next winter. This is because landowners have given permission to local snowmobile clubs to allow snowmobiles on these trails on their land, but only in the winter. This permission does not include any other riders or seasons. Unauthorized use of OFSC trails on private land in the non-winter months can not only lead to trespass charges, but can also result in a landowner permanently closing a trail to all riders for all seasons. Before entering any trail on private property in any season, every rider must have land use permission, either directly from the landowner or through membership in a provincial or regional organization or local club. When in doubt, check with the OFSC or OFATV to confirm where trail riding is available, acceptable and authorized in each season. Ontario snowmobilers and ATV riders have enough shared or dedicated trails to ride legally in this province without trespassing on private land. Snowmobilers and ATV riders need to earn and keep the respect of local landowners and of their home communities by riding only where authorized and by staying on the trail. The best way to enjoy riding responsibly on authorized trails is to join your local club and ride with other club members. The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs is dedicated to providing strong leadership and support to member clubs and volunteers, to establishing and maintaining quality snowmobile trails which are used in a safe and environmentally responsible manner, and to furthering the enjoyment of organized snowmobiling. The Ontario Federation of All-Terrain Vehicle Clubs is a not-for profit, volunteer driven association that along with support staff provides resources to our member clubs so that together, we are able to strengthen the public’s perception and the position that our clubs strive to provide responsible, safe, legal, and environmentally friendly trails for riding all-terrain vehicles (ATVs & ROVs) in the province of Ontario.

The sun shone in Stayner for the lawn bowlers first tournament of the season on June 19th. Investors Group, John Stransky from Collingwood was our sponsor, and this was their 11th year to do so. Twelve teams of pairs from Midland, Collingwood, Barrie and Stayner had a good day of bowls and fellowship. Raj and Jane Rajalingam from our own club were the big winners. Teams from Collingwood, Donna Locke and George Kimber and Jim Lupton and Mildred Lowe took home prizes. The strong team of Ron and Gayle O'Sullivan from Midland also were in the money. We meet every Monday and Thursday evening at 6:30 and all are welcome. The Wasaga Probus Clubs have a league going on Friday mornings at the club. They meet at 9:00 and get out and have some fun and exercise. The study of word origins is called etymology. ‘Second string’ meaning ‘replacement or backup’ dates back to the Middle Ages when an archer always carried a second string in case the one on his bow broke. Long in the tooth’, meaning ‘old’, was originally used to describe horses. As horses age, their gums recede, giving the impression that their teeth are growing. The longer the teeth look, the older the horse.

Midland Approx. Pop. 17,000. In Tay Township., Simcoe County., on Georgian Bay just North of Hwy. 12, 51 km NorthWest of Barrie or Orillia. French Jesuit missionaries established the mission of SainteMarie-Among-the-Hurnons (3 km southeast of the present site of Midland) in 1639 and opened the first hospital and church in Ontario. The mission was a fortified place of refuge for Huron Indian converts. When the Iroquois destroyed the Huron nation the outpost was burned by the missionaries and abandoned in 1649. Fathers Gabriel Lalemant and Jean de Brebeuf were captured by the Iroquois and tortured to death. The mission was reconstructed in 1964 and today is a major tourist attraction. On a hill overlooking the reconstructed Sainte Marie is a twin-spired stone cathedral built in 1926, which honours the eight missionaries martyred in Huronia. In 1830, five of the priests were canonized by the Roman Caholic Church. The bay off Severn Sound which is off Georgian Bay and on which Midland is located, was called successively Christendom, Gloucester, and Munday’s; the latter for the first settlers, Israel and Asher Munday, who arrived in 1872 along with Midland Railway, which had been pushed through from Port Hope via Beaverton. John Smith named the place Midland for its location midway between Pentetanguishene and Victoria Harbour.

This way to the Beach Some Wasaga Beach residents may remember Larisa, who attended Beach BOOSTER's The Way Wasaga Was; Main Street Re-visited event a couple of November's ago. That event in Wasaga Beach launched a project that Larisa has been w o r k i n g o n e v e r s i n c e . T h i s w a y t o t h e B e a c h ! Last week a small contingent of Wasaga Beach business people, with the help of Stonebridge Town Centre and Wasaga Beach Transit, traveled to the Opening Reception of "This way to the Beach" exhibit at the Gladstone Art Hotel in Downtown Toronto! It was GREAT to see Larisa again, have the opportunity to congratulate her in person and enjoy the wonderful photo exhibit all about The Beach! Our Wasaga Beach Transit bus caused quite a stir parked outside the Gladstone Hotel on Queen Street West! The show at the Gladstone Hotel continues until July 2nd. It was a pleasure to work with Tanya Snell in making this trip happen!
