Point of View Best Reprinted of Canada's Beautiful Beaches from Huffington Post Canada One of Canada's best-kept secrets is that it is full of beaches. In a country with a world-leading 265,523 kilometres of coastline -- nearly twice as much as the United States, the No. 2 nation in the category -the wealth of sand and seashells shouldn't be a surprise. Some of Canada's beaches are so outstanding, in fact, that any ardent beachgoer would readily categorize them as world class. At Vacay.ca, we have spent recent months combing the sandy spots of the nation, determining which beaches are the absolute finest and deserving of a visit from you this summer. The criteria for our choices included rating the beaches on their quality of warm and clean water, amenities, accessibility, swimming and water sports options, safety, sense of place, relaxation, and facilities. Here are the Vacay.ca Top Beaches in Canada for 2013: 1. Singing Sands, Basin Head Provincial Park, Souris, PEI Location: 93 kilometres east of Charlottetown Website: www.tourismpei.com/pei-singing-sands-beach Interesting Facts: For reasons scientists are still trying to figure out, this beach makes a strange swishing sound whenever the wind swirls or when a visitor walks on it. Tourism officials on Prince Edward Island suggest the reason may be because of the texture and consistency of the quartz sand. Nevertheless, the sound is a unique feature of a beach that has some of the warmest waters north of Florida. In summer, the water temperature will top 21 Celsius degrees (70 Fahrenheit) at Singing Sands and other sandy spots on PEI, which has more than 800 kilometres of beaches to explore. Why This Beach Rocks: Some of the warmest waters in the northern hemisphere. The supervised beach is in a day-use (summer) park that has a play area, food, washroom, shower facilities, and the Basin Head Fisheries Museum. 2. Wasaga Beach, Ontario Location: 134 kilometres north of Toronto Website: www.wasagabeach.com/tourism.index.gk Interesting Facts: In 2007, a major fire ripped through the main street pedestrian mall of this beach town in the Georgian Bay region. The blaze destroyed several businesses and damaged the lucrative tourism industry. It was a difficult time for the community but Wasaga Beach has hardly missed a beat since renovations were completed. Wasaga Beach is uniquely situated. The bustling beach city, which may be the closest thing Canada has to anything resembling Daytona Beach or Fort Lauderdale, is located between two UNESCO Biosphere Reserves -- the Georgian Bay Littoral and Niagara Escarpment. Why This Beach Rocks: For high school students from the surrounding areas, Wasaga is the ultimate place to go for good times. Wasaga is the world's longest freshwater beach (14 km). The provincial park that bears its name has six beach areas. Great events throughout the year include the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival in January, Snowman Mania in February, Wasaga Beach Lions Home & Garden Show in April, Wasaga Beach Fest in June, Rockin' the Beach sponsored by Beach BOOSTER and Canada Day in July, Beach BOOSTER'S Back to the Beach in August, Corvette Weekend in August, Wasaga Beach Blues Fest and Beach BOOSTER'S Home & Leisure Show (September 13-15) World Diabetes Day Lighting of Nancy Island Blue, November 14, sponsored by Beach BOOSTER. Water Safety Make it a Priority In the Town of Wasaga Beach we are blessed with the longest fresh water beach in the world and the picturesque Nottawasaga River and many of us also have backyard swimming pools. All of these can be used to cool off during those long hot days of summer. However any body of water whether large or small can be a dangerous place if we do not respect it. I would like to remind our residents and visitors to our communities to make water safety priority this year. Drowning deaths are preventable so please review and use the following water safety tips. 1) Regardless of the location, ensure children are supervised; whether at home or on vacation. Adult supervision is the best protection for children – even for those who can swim. 2) Whether at home at the pool or on vacation at the beach, insist that all inexperienced swimmers both youth and adults wear approved life jackets. 3) Ensure that your backyard pool is fully fenced with a self-closing, self-latching gate. 4) When not using your home pool, clear all toys out of the water and away from the edge. These can often tempt children to the water's edge to play. 5) Ensure you have emergency equipment including a first aid kit and a phone in the immediate pool area. 6) When boating, ensure everyone in the boat has their lifejacket on and fastened. 7) Ensure your water craft has all necessary safety equipment on board. 8) Don't consume alcohol before or during swimming or boating activities. 9) Be cautious about swimming in currents, and know what to do if you get into trouble. 10) Get trained through swimming and water safety lessons; get your Pleasure Craft Operator Card if you operate a boat; know how to respond in an emergency by taking first aid lessons. Lifejacket safety checklist: 1) Is it Canadian-approved? 2) Will it support the person it was made for? 3) Are all the snaps, belts, ties, tapes and/or zippers on your lifejacket or PFD in good condition? 4) Is it easy to put on and take off? 5) Can you move your arms freely when wearing it? 6) Does it let you bend at the waist? 7) Can you see the ground at your feet and walk over obstacles easily? 8) Does it keep your head above water? 9) Relax in the water face down. Does your lifejacket roll you to a face-up position? 10) Can you swim and manouevre easily in the water? 11) Have you attached a whistle to your flotation device? The community group Brechin and Beyond recently installed its latest project, Bikes in Bloom, in Brechin on Highway 12 on the other side of Lake Simcoe. There are 21 colourful bikes, all decorated with flower containers. The project was the creation of committee member Beryl Bertrand. It seems to us at Beach BOOSTER that we could do the same thing here in Wasaga Beach as a beautification project. Anyone got an old bike or two?

Ayden's Ride Across Canada For Charity As I write this article Ayden, Steve and Sandra Green are well on their way with “Ayden's Ride” across Canada raising money for the United Way. Prior to their departure, Ayden and Steve dropped by Beach Corner to discuss their upcoming fundraiser. Ayden, a local teenager, will be following his hero, Terry Fox's route from Newfoundland through the Golden Horseshoe and back on to the Trans-Canada Highway to British Columbia. This ride will take at least two and half months. Ayden will be riding with his Mom and plans on riding six to eight hours per day while his Dad, Steve will be following in the RV. At the age of 5, Ayden was diagnosed with mild cerebral palsy and at 8 he was diagnosed with non-verbal learning disability and Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism. During his journey he never paused or forgot to smile. Now he's 15-years-old and wants to give back. Ayden came up with the idea a year ago and has been working towards this goal. He's looking forward to seeing Canada and promoting a cause whose impact will be felt for years and inspire future action from others. Their ultimate goal is to raise $50,000 for United Way of Canada however, Steve feels that it's not just about the money, but the experience. It's about getting the word out there. Letting people know that folks with cerebral palsy, Asperger's syndrome, and autism should be aware of organizations in their community that can provide assistance. That they are not alone. Both Steve and his wife, Sandra quit their jobs to help support their son for this fundraiser. Steve explains: “We want to try to instill the values that if you have a dream you can do it. It doesn't matter - we seem to be caught up with the idea that we have to acquire and acquire, and then life just passes you by. One of the biggest regrets in my life is not travelling when I was young. One of the things I hope to pass on to Ayden and future generations of Greens is when they have ideas or dreams they can come to him and say: What do you think? And he will be able to say my parents did this let's go! That's the best thing I can do. It's going to redefine his life as a person and it's going to bring us together closer as a family. Hopefully we are going to raise awareness for young people with Asperger syndrome, cerebral palsy and the message we want to convey is that the United Way is there for them.” A Community Party was held in his honor Friday, June 28th at Stonebridge Town Centre in support of Ayden's Ride. Ayden's purpose is simple; to raise money and give back to the organizations that have helped him in the past. If you would like to contribute to Ayden's fundraiser or for more information please visit: www.aydensride.com.

Years ago I came across this quote and it stuck with me: “It is hard to drain the swamp when you are so busy fighting alligators!” This quote refers to minding your priorities to get things done. There are few things we can learn from this quote when it comes Wasaga Beach businesses. Particularly in the warmer months, we are a tourist town. This means we have a lot more customers around with a lot more differences in expectations in terms of customer service level requirements. So a few things come to mind when I draw on my own buying experience. For example when I asked a hostess once about a particular offering on the menu at one of the restaurants we frequent, the last thing I wanted to hear was “I’m sorry I am just the hostess, you will have to ask your server”. What I heard in my own mind was “I’m sorry you must have me confused with someone who really cares”. Don’t get me wrong, this hostess was well dressed, wellmannered, friendly, and she smiled. The only thing she was lacking was just a bit of service training. Training? How can you even bring up training at our busiest time of year when we have a problem just filling orders when it’s hard enough to get people to work for us at this time of year? This gets back to the old adage that you never have a second chance to make a first impression. Market research has told us that a new customer is likely to make more than ten times their initial purchase over time if you manage to satisfy them enough to get them to return over a standard customer lifecycle. Not making the grade on the first encounter with a customer is a costly mistake, so weigh that against a little bit of service training before you bring your new employees on board. You may also decide that your business can benefit by refreshing a little service knowledge with your long time employees to make sure you can sustain high levels of service. Have you ever made a special trip to pick up something you need to finish your improvement job at home or to complement the outfit you want to wear that evening only to hear the store clerk say; “Sorry we don’t have that item” and sometimes with an add-on like “we get a new shipment next week”. What a customer really wants to hear is; “Try the store nearby, they may be able to help you.” Some merchants may think; “Well I just helped my competitor get ahead of me”. A smart merchant thinks; I created a good customer experience and may have given a reason to a visitor to come back to our town because of a good experience and make additional purchases. Chances are the first stop they will make will be at the merchant’s store that provided the goodwill referral. Similar type merchants located near each other creates more of an opportunity than a threat. It does more than increase chances of a sale, it increases customer traffic. This is why malls came into being. We go to malls because we can go to many stores at once. Customers can comparison shop and are provided with more choices. Marketing science has demonstrated that Rona and Home Depot would rather be located together at a hardware epicenter than on opposite sides of town. Car dealers all cluster along a main location in a city or town. To a certain degree, they need each other. Just like in our town, all our businesses need each other and would derive better benefits by banding together to offer more choices, develop common business training resources to save money and be more effective overall working together through our established trade associations, all profiting to make Wasaga Beach a preferred location to live, work and play. Beach BOOSTER is here to help and enrich our community. Please send me your thoughts and comments at Gary@beachBOOSTER.com on how we make our efforts count.

Tales of our Neighbours and Friends

Locals Heading To Japan On July 26th and 27th this month, two locals will be competing as part of Team Canada in Osaka, Japan at the 2013 Shito Ryu Itosu Kai Karate World Champions. Shito Ryu Itosu Kai is an international karate organization that originated in Okinawa, Japan. There are clubs all over the world and there is a world championship every 4 years. There are approximately 40 members of Team Canada traveling to Japan to compete this time. One participant is Wasaga Beach local, Sensei Mike Duval, who is a 4th degree black belt and trains at the Wasaga Beach Itosu-kai.

Mike Duval The other is Keenan Taylor, 11, of Collingwood, Ontario who has his shodan-ho (the belt before black) and who is the youngest member of Team Canada. Keenan trains out of the Georgian Triangle karate club that is run by Sensei Omer Levert. Levert owns Custom Boat Tops in Wasaga Beach but his passion for karate takes up most of his free time. This year the club chose to send Keenan and one parent to represent the Collingwood club in Japan and they spent the last year fundraising to help cover some of the costs of the trip.

Keenan and his biggest fan, little sister Tanyss Some local businesses who made donations were Auto Tech n Tire (Wasaga Beach), LaFreniere (Stayner), Smart's Flowers (Collingwood), Great Lakes Trophies (Collingwood), Bates Sand and Gravel (Collingwood), Rick Ford (Collingwood), and Siabhan Dempsey. Both Sensei Mike and Keenan have been training hard during the week at their prospective clubs, as well as training in Toronto every Saturday at the "Honbu" (the Canadian headquarters) with the rest of Team Canada. If you would like to follow their progress, you can soon follow them on Facebook or check out Keenan's blog which he will be updating while in Japan at http://www.mykaratelife.com

Jan Hamerton Memorial Ride

We are pleased to report that not even all of the bugs and humidity could dampen the spirits of all of the riders that showed up at our Jan Hamerton Memorial Ride on Sunday June 23, 2013 held at the Wildman tract, Simcoe forest. It’s not the quantity of people that show up but rather the quality of the individuals that made this event fun and memorable! This year we had many new riders join us in the day’s event and it was not without some highlights. We managed to make it through a water hole that was created by a resourceful beaver which flooded a section of our trail. Although we met our challenges the water turned out to be refreshing on such a hot day! We also all shared a moment of silence for a previous member of our club, Jan Hamerton at one of her favorite spots along the trail. She was a very iconic member of the Central www.coatv.ca Ontario All Terrain Vehicle Club and is remembered fondly by all who knew her. All of the admission fees collected were donated to the The Canadian Cancer Society in the amount of CAD$420.00 in honor of Jan Hamerton. Trailside lunch was supplied by Foodland Stayner. A great time was had by all and we look forward to seeing you all again at our next ride! Event and membership information can be found at our web site coatv.ca .We can also be found on Facebook and Twitter. Ride Safe, Experience nature in a new way.

White Cane Day a Great Success! Photo: Lion Fred Simms, Greg Thompson (CNIB volunteer) Lion Alan and Marian Ritchie receive a donation from Nicholas and Steve Nuchis. The Wasaga Beach Lions Club with assistance from Greg Thompson (CNIB volunteer) raised $995.84 at their first annual White Cane Day fundraiser at Walmart. We are asking these funds be allocated to help those in need of a new cane. The CNIB provides vision rehabilitation programs and services at no cost to individuals who are blind or partially sighted, including training on how to travel safely and independently in their home and community.

History of the White Cane In 1921, James Biggs, a photographer from Bristol, England, became blind following an accident. Because he was feeling uncomfortable with the amount of traffic around his home, he painted his walking stick white to be more easily visible. In 1930, the late George A. Bonham, President of the Peoria Lions Club (Illinois) introduced the idea of using the white cane with a red band as a means of assisting the blind in independent mobility. The Peoria Lions approved the idea, white canes were made and distributed, and the Peoria City Council adopted an ordinance giving the bearers the right-of way to cross the street. News of the club’s activity spread quickly to other Lions clubs throughout the United States, and their visually handicapped friends experimented with the white canes. Overwhelming acceptance of the white cane idea by the blind and sighted alike quickly gave cane users a unique method of identifying their special need for travel consideration among their sighted counterparts. How our local towns were named

Lafontaine Approx. Pop. 300. In Tiny Township., Simcoe County., on County Road 26, 10 km. west of Midland. The place was first known as St. Croix because of the many crosses erected there by Father Jean Louis Hennepin, a missionary sent from France to Canada in 1675. The second time the space was settled was in the 1830's when disbanded French-Canadian soldiers came to take up grants of land they had been assigned. They named the community Lafontaine to honour Sir Louis Hippolyte LaFontaine, joint premier of United Canada from 1848 to 1851, with Robert Baldwin. Lafontaine survived well into the 20th century as the only Ontario settlement of any size where English was not spoken, but by the 1940's most residents were bilingual.

The Nancy Villa Another one of our once great hotels was the Nancy Villa. The Mosley Street location close to what is now 3rd Street was just steps away from the action at main Street and Beach Drive, but sitting on the river’s edge opposite Nancy Island also offered a beautiful, picturesque setting. One of the original buildings of the hotel & motel complex had been moved from down river, by floating it to the hotels location. This building had a date inscribed showing it dating back to 1901. This popular hotel was owned and operated by Marjorie and Lloyd Dyer, who were known for their welcoming of guests to their modern hotel/motel, dining room and in later years the licensed Port Hole Lounge that overlooked the river. Live entertainment was offered in the Port Hole Lounge year ‘round, catering to the summer crowds and the new found winter customers who enjoyed snowmobiling in Wasaga Beach and on the then frozen river. Although known as a great family resort, the Nancy Villa was also one of the many Hot Spots in The Beach, along with the Windjammer Room of the Capstan Inn, the Dyconia, The Dardanella and the El Morocco. I fondly remember Marj Dyer welcoming me as a part of a large group of regular young “guests” at the Nancy Villa on many evenings as we enjoyed beverages and the great live entertainment late into the night… but then again her concern for the group to enjoy a healthy, full breakfast as we made our way back the next morning. The “Villa’s” reputation as a well run, family friendly inn spread beyond Wasaga Beach as many Collingwood families had weddings and other special occasions there. Former Prime Minister John Diefenbaker once stayed at our Nancy Villa! Although I enjoy reminiscing about this once great Wasaga Beach landmark, I am often saddened as I travel by it’s former location that is simply designated as “Nancy Lot”, a seldom used, town owned parking lot. Yep… in a lot of ways, “they paved paradise… and put up a parking lot”!
