HMS Nancy Nancy was a schooner which sailed the Upper Great Lakes as a private cargo vessel in the fur trade. During the War of 1812, the HMS Nancy was pressed into service as a British supply ship. While in this service, the schooner was destroyed in the Nottawasaga River by American Forces. The sunken hull of the Nancy formed an obstruction in the river and an island was established by the resultant deposition of silt and sand. The remains of the hull now rest in a museum on the island to mark the site of the Nancy's demise and to commemorate her gallant defense. The Nancy was built in 1789 at the British port of Detroit. The construction of the Schooner was under the supervision of John Richardson of Montreal's Richardson, Forsyth and Company. There was likely no set plans for the construction; however, it has been determined that the schooner's length was approximately 80 feet, width (or beam) 22 feet, and depth of hold, eight feet. John Richardson wrote to his partner from Detroit in 1789: "The schooner will be a perfect masterpiece of workmanship and beauty. The expense to us will be great, but there will be the satisfaction of her being strong and very durable. Her floortimbers, keel, keel-son, stem, and lower futtocks are oak. The transom, stern-post, upper futtocks, top-timbers, beams, and knees are all red cedar. She will carry 350 barrels." The figurehead on the vessel was a carving "of a lady dressed in the present fashion, and with a hat and feather" done by Skelling of New York. The Nancy was likely named for either the wife or daughter of John Richardson.

Point of View Our Main Street and Main Beach have been welcoming visitors for over 100 years and should continue to do so, while at the same time being a place for locals to enjoy a vibrant beachfront with leisure activities and entertainment. As a vital part of our Tourism Industry, this area needs to be revitalized and once again be our entertainment hub. Beach BOOSTER continues to promote all of Wasaga Beach in a positive way, including our Main Street and Main Beach area. Recently, our Beach BOOSTER Family Fun Day at The Beach contest recognized the new family friendly businesses at the Main Beach area. Each year, with the help of our sponsors, Beach BOOSTER lights Historic Nancy Island to mark World Diabetes Day and bring activity to our Main Street Blue Bridge. Our Rockin’ The Beach event on Historic Main Street over the Canada Day Weekend provided great family friendly entertainment right at the Main Beach. This past weekend, Beach BOOSTER with the help of The Promote Wasaga Committee, presented the 2nd Annual Back to The Beach Festival, again on Historic Main Street and provided our community and all of our visitors with local talent, fun activities, shopping and some world class entertainment over the two days. Beach BOOSTER will continue to promote our Main Street and Main Beach as a family friendly place for all living and visiting Wasaga Beach! Throughout the year, most of the many people I speak with regarding Wasaga Beach, its past and its future, agree that bringing families and entertainment back to our Main Beach is an important step in its revitalization. I thank all who support us, as individuals and businesses working together will bring on positive change. Although there have been assurances from the owner of several beachfront properties and three of the bars on Beach Drive that they too are committed to supporting any attempt to bring family activities back to our beachfront, Beach BOOSTER had no response to the many attempts to contact them about our events. Personally and on behalf of Beach BOOSTER Group, I thank everyone who helped organize Back to The Beach this past weekend and the many who came down to Historic Main Street to support our initiative while taking in some of the entertainment provided.

Hot summer days and a bowl of chilled gazpacho soup are a match made in heaven. With its deep Spanish roots, this soup incorporates an abundance of fresh produce and is often thought of as a salad soup. It is low fat and full of flavour. Chilled Gazpacho (serves 8) 6 ripe tomatoes, peeled and chopped 1 purple onion, finely chopped 1 cucumber, peeled, seeded, chopped 1 sweet red bell pepper (or green) seeded and chopped 2 stalks celery, chopped 1-2 Tbsp chopped fresh parsley 1 clove garlic, minced 1/4 cup red wine or balsamic vinegar 1/4 cup olive oil 2 Tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice 2 teaspoons sugar Salt and fresh ground pepper to taste 6 or more drops of Tabasco sauce to taste 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 4 cups tomato or vegetable juice Peel the tomatoes by placing them in a pot of boiling water until the skins just slide off. Combine all ingredients. Blend in a food processor. Refrigerate overnight in a non-reactive storage container to allow flavours to blend together. A nice and easy dish to serve with the Gazpacho are Salmon Cakes. The cakes can be made a day ahead and stored in the refrigerator. Salmon Cakes 2 large baking potatoes, washed and cut into large chunks 3 tbsp canola oil 2 salmon filets about 6 oz each Salt and pepper 4 green onions, sliced thinly 1 bunch fresh dill, chopped 1 egg, lightly beaten Cook potatoes in boiling salted water until tender when pierced with a fork. Heat a sauté pan over medium-high heat and when it's hot, add oil. Season salmon filets and sear on both sides until just cooked through. Place the potatoes into a large bowl and add salmon, salt and pepper. Using a potato masher, mash them together. Add green onions, dill and egg and mix well. Form into 4 large or 8 small patties. If the mixture seems a bit loose and won't form a well-packed cake, add some breadcrumbs until it binds. Heat a large skillet and add oil. Add salmon cakes and fry them until they are golden brown on each size and heated through. Enjoy! Brian Edwards WE Catering www.wecatering.ca

Night Time Walking and Cycling As we move into the latter part of summer we see that the sun goes down a little quicker each day. Reducing the number of hours and minutes we have to enjoy either a nice walk or cycle after dinner. As we get closer to fall, the weather, if it stays warm, we'll see residents and visitors out enjoying our awesome Town in the dark. But time and time again I see walkers walking on the wrong side of the road and doing so in the dark with dark clothing on or cyclists forgetting that a bicycle is a vehicle under Highway Traffic Act of Ontario and cycling without proper or adequate lighting on their bikes. So here are some tips and thoughts that I hope will make you safer when you are out, when the light gets dim, enjoying our Town. Walkers, Cyclists and others (skate boarders): 1)Been Seen – wear reflective clothing, light coloured clothing and consider carrying a flashlight to light your way. 2)Cyclists – your bicycle is a vehicle, it is required to have proper lighting and reflective material on it both front and back; a white light at the front and white reflective material on your front forks and a red light at the rear and red reflective material on your seat stays. 3)Plan Your Journey – Ensure the street or trail you take to get to your destination is well lit and is clear to travel. 4)When walking along streets/roads, walk facing traffic. 5)When cycling along streets/roads, ride with traffic. 6)Be Aware – of other uses of the road you are on, whether they be motorized or not. 7)Be Predictable – as non-motorized users, when walking or riding do so in a predicable safe and legal manner. Walk facing traffic not with or in a wandering manner. Cycle with traffic, not against and obey the rules of the road. 8)Be Alert – as a walker or cyclist you are much small than a motor vehicle so always be aware of your surroundings, having ear buds in yours ears and listening to your music volume on high, seriously reduces your ability to be aware of trouble heading your way. 9)Share our streets – as non-motorized users on our streets respect our motorized users. Motorists: 1)Your Speed – travel at the posted speed limit, not above, reduce your speed with regards to the weather and road conditions. 2)Expect the Unexpected – expect to see walkers and cyclists sharing our streets with you, be especially aware of them at night. 3)The 2 Cs – Be Cautious and Courteous when approaching walkers and cyclists. Take care when passing these other users; the time you take to do this carefully is insignificant compared to your whole journey. 4)Share our streets – as motorized users on our streets respect our non-motorized users. Both non-motorized and motorized users have their places on our highway. The Challenge is to have both groups use our streets safety. Elton Rohn Internationally Acclaimed Elton John Tribute Artist Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing Ron Camilleri, the man behind Elton Rohn, Tribute Artist Elton John. Ron has an impressive work history. He is a music producer and owner of RDC Music Inc. and Camron Creative Studio. Ron writes original music for television and film. He also writes, produces music and video for special projects and corporate work and has done professional photography as well. He wrote the theme song for Canada's longest running and most successful weekly TV series “Out There With Melissa DiMarco”. This television program was the winner of the US International Film and Video Festival's Outstanding Achievement in Creative Excellence Award and nominated for a Rockie Award for Best Comedy Program. At a young age, music was instilled in Ron's life with his Dad being an executive with CBS Records Canada. He recalls going to concerts with his Father since he started to walk and meeting all the artists. He always enjoyed watching artists on stage and going backstage. His Dad gave him his first Elton John album “Honky Chateau” and he was hooked playing guitar and singing. He felt he sounded like Elton John. After completing his degree in University he continued with his music and landed a career in sales and marketing position with Warner Music Canada and Sony Music Canada formerly CBS Records. Ron eventually headed up Columbia Records for Sony Music Canada and had the pleasure of working with some top artists in the world such as Celine Dion, Tony Bennett, Billy Joel, Pink Floyd, Mariah Carey to name a few. This background helped groom with his own live performance. Ron states” “I was always a studio guy and my motivation was to write music for motion picture. I write all original music for Melissa Dimarco. I never pictured myself as an artist I just wanted to write music.” Ron is multi-talented, a TV music writer, music player of several instruments, a singer, a marketer and now a performer. Ron has been a tribute artist for over six years. Singing all the 70's classic tunes of Elton John “Yellow Brick Road” and “Honky Chateau”, he pulls it all together to be a leader of Elton Rohn. Ron will be playing in Las Vegas at the Elton John Expo on October 4th and 5th where he will headline at the Hard Rock Café. Apparently, Elton John will be at Caesars Palace and Ron can expect some of Elton John's band members to drop by. Who knows this may be an opportunity for Ron to meet Sir Elton John. What started out as a fun band with his brother, Rick Camilleri, who was President at Sony Music, has since grown into playing festivals and events. Elton Rohn performed last week at Back to the Beach and did a superb job singing all those classic Elton John songs. Comments received were the resemblance, singing and mannerism on stage. For more information on Elton Rohn visit www.eltonrohn.com.

Our home grown second annual “Back to The Beach” event August 10 and 11 was a success this year. It featured some impressive acts and again featured local talent. Which brings me to thinking about our Beach One and Two vision. We just can’t wait until our Beach 1&2 vision is built and then they will come. We have to start planning and doing and pull the vision along. Watching the beach crowd dynamics of coming in and out of the “Back to The Beach” event location and enjoying Laura LaChapelle Johnson’s “Wasaga Beach Youth Showcase” entertain us, two things came to mind. We have youth talent in this town; Wasaga Beach Youth Showcase, Sawyer Bullock Magic, Wasaga Beach Community Theatre Youth, The Danceroom, Dance by Design, school bands, local singing artists, to name a few. And, we have to find easy ways to deal with holding events at the beach (and on the beach) given beach crowd access and the natural elements like wind and rain. What if? What if we take a page out of the Calgary Stampede and organize our own version of “Young Canadians” and create a movable stage made out of tractor trailers that they put in place at the Stampede grounds every time the Young Canadians come together with other acts to entertain the Stampede audience on the Stampede fairgrounds. The Young Canadians School of Performing Arts is a well-established part of Calgary’s cultural scene. The Young Canadians of the Calgary Stampede have been captivating audiences at the Grandstand Show for more than 44 years with their energetic dance and vocal performances. A movable stage with a standing permit process with a series of MNR Ontario Parks pre-approvals and Town pre-approvals and a blanket insurance policy could be “EVENT READY” and used to feature any kind of act (right on the beach if we wanted) to make the Town of Wasaga Beach “Event Friendly” making permits, approvals and pre-conditions a hassle free process for local and outside promoters. The movable stage would be the stage our “Wasaga Beach Youth Talent” could use to feature our home grown talent to the world. Our local talent could also be billed with any outside act we bring in to feature on our stage. This is something we can start right now. We can build the Wasaga Beach Youth Talent machine and create a performing arts vehicle for our region. We can build a movable stage that can serve all events we need in this town all in line with the Beach 1&2 vision, hassle free, powering events making Wasaga Beach the preferred destination to work, live and play. You can bring your ideas forward to the Promote Wasaga Committee at the Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce. We could create a “tipping point” to get our Beach 1&2 vision moving forward towards realization. Beach BOOSTER is here to help and enrich our community. “Be the Beach”, send me your thoughts and comments at Gary@beachBOOSTER.com on how we make our efforts count. How our local places were named Georgian Bay With the recent birth of the newest Royal, Prince George, I was reminded of our local connection with the new Prince’s Great Great Great Grandfather.

Our own Georgian Bay is impressive enough to be a lake on its own. Almost as big as Lake Ontario, Georgian Bay is 193 kilometres (120 miles) long and 81 kilometres (50 miles) wide! Originally known as Lake Manitoulin, it was considered the Sixth Great Lake. As a result of the survey work done by Henry Wolsey Bayfield (yes, there is a Barrie Street named after him) this huge body of water was decreed to be a part of Lake Huron in the early 1800s and was named Georgian Bay after our reigning monarch King George IV. This week our Georgian Bay will be the proud host of the Tall Ships arriving to celebrate the Bi-Centennial of the War of 1812 and the Wasaga Under Siege event here in Wasaga Beach. Enjoy this great event on Georgian Bay! Joe Bickerstaff

Natural Medicine: Separating Fact From Fiction Do Vitamin Supplements Really Work? Dr James Meschino DC, MD, ND Studies indicate that 7 out of every 10 Canadian adults take vitamin supplements on a regular basis. When surveyed, most people indicate that they take supplements to gain more energy, help reduce risk of certain diseases, or help better manage an existing health problem. At the same time, many adults think that taking supplements is a waste of time and money. So, which group is correct? The truth appears to lie somewhere in between. I can walk you into virtually any health food store or drug store in the country and show you supplements on the shelf that are essentially useless or have no proven value. By that I mean one or more of the following: 1. The product contains ingredient(s) that have not been shown to do anything meaningful in any human clinical studies, but rather may only be supported by animal research or experimental test tube or petri dish studies. 2. The dosage of the key ingredient(s) is too low to be of any value. 3. The manufacturer did not use the standardized grade of the herb known to produce a significant health outcome, according to human clinical studies Why Do Inferior and Useless Supplements Exist? Useless and inferior supplements exist because the nutritional supplement business “is a b u s i n e s s ” , a n d u n f o r t u n a t e l y, m a n y manufacturers are more concerned about their bottom line (profit) than about making products that provide significant health benefits. Simply stated, many supplement companies will make anything they can sell, whether it’s of any value

or not. In some cases they feature an ingredient that many people have heard is helpful in dealing with a specific health problem, but to cut costs they include a dosage that is far too low to do anything of importance. Thus, many supplements on the shelf are supported by good marketing, rather than good science. Some supplements are also driven by trendy fads that come and go like the wind, but have little scientific support to sustain their sales over the long-term. So, that is the negative side of the vitamin supplement story. Supplements Proven To Work If you are going to take supplements, and I suggest you do, it’s important to spend your money on supplements that are proven to work and are best suited to your needs. The supplements you take should be based on: ·Your age and gender ·Health conditions you presently have (or recurring health problems, such as recurring urinary tract infections) ·Health conditions that run in your family (to help you avoid these problems in the future using the best available evidence) ·The medications you are taking (Some supplements make drugs work better, or reduce their potential side effects. Some supplements increase the risk of side effects of certain drugs, or adversely affect the drug’s detoxification, which can create serious health problems – thus expert advice is required to sort this out) A vast number of human clinical studies show that taking the right supplements can: ·Slow/reverse many aspects of the aging process

·Increase energy ·Support brain health, memory, immunity, detoxification and other body systems ·Decrease risk of many degenerative diseases ·Help better manage many existing health conditions To help you get on track with the right supplementation program for your circumstances I suggest you complete the free online Nutrition/Lifestyle/Anti-aging Health Assessment at www.naturalhealthtest.com. The customized feedback report you receive will highlight supplements (including dosages and standardized grades) that are best suited to your circumstances, and explains the science behind them. In this day and age daily supplementation should be part of your wellness/health regiment. Supplements can make a very big difference to your health and vitality if you know how to use them properly. So, go online and complete the assessment at the web link I provided, and feel free to email me with any questions you have after reviewing your report.
