Entertainment in The Beach! The Wasaga Beach Home and Leisure Show presented by Beach Booster Promotions and the Wasaga Beach Blues Festival attracted almost eight thousand people this past weekend. In its second year, the exhibition was held in conjunction with and a partner of the Wasaga Beach Blues Festival. Over thirty exhibitors were located at Stonebridge Town Centre under one roof. The exhibitors offered something for everyone from heating & air conditioning, wine making, travel, real estate, bedding and for the Ladies, Aloette Cosmetics and jewelry. The event attracted some specialized vendors such as Four Winds Trading a connoisseur in quality outdoor living products from Ottawa as well as Ecotip Ltd. from Woodstock who are exclusive Magic Wall distributor. Local vendors were pleased with this year's show. Kudos to Beach Booster Group for a successful event and look forward to next year's Wasaga Beach Home and Leisure Show. Complimenting the Wasaga Beach Home and Leisure Show was the Wasaga Beach Blues Festival featuring Chuck Jackson, musical director, bringing world-class music entertainment to our community. Rain or shine, people were out to captivate some of the best music the Blues Fest had to offer over the weekend. “Last year we called ourselves a festival this year we are a festival.” said Stonebridge's Mark Crowe. The first night of the festival began with D'Mar and Gill combining a wild mix that ends up making blues music stand tall followed by the legendary Downchild Blues Band. This legendary band has been a class act for forty years. Downchild remains a blues force, true to itself and without equal. New to the event was the Saturday's New Orleans inspired Street Shuffle with 10 acts playing along Stonebridge Boulevard for a constant stream of music. Fans and musicians alike found themselves dancing, swaying and singing under the sun and blue skies. The Wasaga Beach Blues Festival main stage lured such artists as Irene Torres & The Sugar Devils, New Orleans meets Toronto; Dexter Allen, one of the best 21st century blues performers from Mississippi; Jack de Keyser, his music traverses blues, rock, jazz and soul but is always firmly rooted in the blues; The Last Watz – Tribute to the Band, a tribute to Levon Helm who passed away last year. Some of the songs played were “Cripple Creek”, “The Weight” and the all time favourite “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”. After-parties on Saturday night were at Boston Pizza with the Blues Brothers and Wild Wing in a standing room with Paul James. Sunday brought us Mark Bird Stafford – Junior Jam with some of our local talent kids who did a fabulous job singing on stage. Mark is passionate about making sure the next generation develops an appreciation for the Blues: The Paul James Band, based in Toronto, delivered a high-energy show and The Mississippi All-Stars, featured Dexter Allen and D'Mar & Gill. Let's keep bringing more music to Wasaga Beach along with the Wasaga Beach Beach Home and Leisure Show. Point of View

Lots of relationships fail because we spend more time pointing out each other's mistakes and not enough time enjoying each other's company.

Ward System Needed in Wasaga Beach While I have only been a permanent resident of Wasaga Beach for two years, I can't help but notice that town councillors have very little 'direct' responsibilities for delivering specific results. Without a ward structured system the re-election of councillors becomes more of a popularity game, rather than who is best qualified to deliver a specific agenda of results. A ward system still allows each of us to be properly represented on broader issues such as housing and beach development. The current governing structure calls for voters to cast a ballot for several councillors. As is too often the case it puts too much emphasis on 'photoops' and name recognition. It is obvious that most councillors are equally invested in such activity. I personally would rather have a single councillor who represents my specific neighbourhood, yet sits on several council bodies that deal with broader issues. Having the more direct voting power to reward a councillor with re-election or removal from office often results in greater accountability. From school through to the private sector, individual results have always been the recognized measurement of performance. I think it would be safe to say that most residents in Wasaga Beach have no clear handle on whom to hold responsible for specific issues. The current structure holds nobody responsible. I'm sure that most councillors would be only too happy to continue to fly under the radar. I think that a ward system would go a long way in making councillors more responsible for their performance and results. Definable performance results should be the basis for building a highly performing council, rather than photo-ops and name recognition. Give me a single councillor that I as a voter can hold to account.

If you like burrito's then chances are your going to love these chimichanga's. Also known as chivichanga or chimmy chonga they are made by filling a floured tortilla with a wide range of ingredients such as rice, chicken, cheese, beans, etc. They are then deep fried and usually accompanied with salsa, guacamole, or sour cream. There is some debate over the origin of the name, but according to one source the owner of the Tucson restauant El Charro, accidentally dropped a pastry into the deep fryer in 1922 and uttered a Spanish curse-word quickly changing it in mid sentence to "chimichanga" the Spanish equivalent to "thingamajig".

CHICKEN CHIMICHANGA Ingredients 8 flour tortillas 2 grilled chicken breasts, thinly sliced or ½ a leftover chicken One onion, and 2 sweet peppers sliced and sautéed until soft About 1/2 lb of mozzarella or Monterey jack, grated 1 tin of Refried beans Vegetable oil for frying 3 eggs for making an egg wash

Method Lay out all 8 tortillas on a work surface. You're going to put all the ingredients onto these and roll them up for frying. You want to pile all the ingredients in the very center of the tortilla, not edge to edge as you would for a burrito; this is so you will be able to roll it up and seal it later. Add a couple of spoonfuls of refried beans into the center of your tortillas, and then divide up all the other filling ingredients into piles on top of the beans. Take one of the tortillas, and roll it over once. Roll it up tightly and either dip into the egg wash mixture or brush it with a pastry brush Heat some oil in a skillet. You can either deep fry these, or shallow fry them in a skillet. The deep fry method is better, but most people prefer the shallow fry method. These instructions are for the shallow frying method. You want to add about an inch of oil to your deep skillet, and heat it up over medium heat. When hot, (a little piece of tortilla starts bubbling immediately when dropped into the oil), add your chimichangas. You will probably need to do this in about three batches, as you don't want to over crowd the skillet and drop the oil temperature down too much. Fry for about 2 minute's per side, or until crispy and golden brown. Brian Edwards...WE Catering....www.wecatering.ca Oct 5 – “Under the Harvest Moon” Hosted by the Georgian Circle Family Restaurant. Storage Wars Comes to Fairgrounds Road Special to Beach BOOSTER by Connie McCrae A total of 9 lockers went up for auction on September 6, 2013. At around 8:45 am you could see the line of people starting to register at Storage Zone on Fairgrounds Road to be part of Television’s Storage Wars Canada. People came from all around to see and be part of this opportunity, this is the time for our community to shine in the spot light. As we gathered together to enter the gates, you could feel the tension between some of the stars where high. Cast members Roy Dirnbeck – “The Instigator”, Ursula Stolf – “The Knock Out”, Cindy Hayden and Rick Coffill – “The Veterans”, Paul and Bogart Kenny – “The High Roller and The Kid”, and auctioneer Don Reinhart. Some of the lockers were purchased by local residents from Wasaga Beach, while a few where purchased by the stars of the show. Roy purchased a locker for $850.00. While Paul went against his son Bogart's idea of a good locker and paid $475.00. Well I must say that I was very excited to be there and, the thought that I might have the chance to be on TV again, was thrilling. We got an opportunity to look in the locker but not touch or stick our toes in. Then the bidding would begin, you have to be fast with the hand. I personally thought that some lockers went very high, but again I don't know an antique from a piece of kindling. It was nice to see the stars of the show chatting it up with some of the locals. Some people brought their pets too. I saw small and big dogs and parrots that talked. Now you know that will be on TV, look for it to be on late February 2014. So if you see me walking down the streets don't worry just stop and ask…..I don't mind giving autographs.

The summer season is fast approaching its end and with it we usher in a new school year. As motorists we now must keep a watchful eye for children who may be walking or cycling to or from school. These youth may not be thinking road safety so it is vital that motorists do. In “School Zones” slow down and be extra watchful for youth. School buses will be reappearing on our roadways, these motor vehicles stop frequently and appear to drive slowly, but that is generally because they are adhering to the speed limit. These actions can frustrate some drivers. However please remember these vehicles carry our most precious cargo, our children and it is for that reason alone, when following a school bus you should drive responsibly and not aggressively. When a school bus stops with its stop arm out and red lights flashing it is either letting off or on students. Being impatient and passing a stopped school is not only against the law but is reckless and dangerous. It's an offence to pass a stopped school bus and it could cost you $500.00 and 6 demerit points. Parents and Guardians, please remind your students of the rules of the road and how to be safe while walking or cycling to and from school. If you walk to school, walk facing traffic. If you bike to school, bike with traffic and wear your helmet. Whether you walk or bike wear clothing that makes you more visible to traffic. Refrain from walking and texting, when you focus on texting your ability to perceive or avoid a dangerous situation is compromised. If your child is new to school or going to a new school plan a route for them to school or the school bus stop and walk it with them so they know the route. If your child rides a school bus remind them to stay seated in the bus when it is moving and to keep their arms and heads inside and not out a window. Also so remind them to never throw anything out the school bus windows. Ensure that you review with your child the school's code of conduct and how to handle issues at schools.

Pictured above is the Terry Fox Run Team from Beach Chiropractic & Wellness Centre. The team collected over $2000. While the money is still being counted from this past weekend's Terry Fox Run, it was a record fundraiser in Wasaga Beach, where the run raised $14,826 -according to organizer David Foster. Well done, Wasaga Beach! The fundraiser commemorates Canadian cancer activist Terry Fox, who ran across the country on a prosthetic leg in 1980 as part of his Marathon of Hope.

How our local places were named

The Labour Day weekend in Wasaga Beach has come and gone and now Beachers are in the process of boarding up the windows and doors and rolling up the streets. NOT….. There is no rest for the enterprising. The Snowman Mania people are gearing up for the Family Day long weekend February 14 - 17, 2014 getting ready to organize Snowman Mania events that will rock and awe visitors and citizens of this great town. The third annual Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival is in full planning swing to bring our town the film event of the year. Stay tuned folks; the public viewing and awards and gala will be held January 25, 2014. So far we have entries from Wasaga Beach, Tel Aviv Israel, London England, Australia, Los Angeles, USA and Sicily Italy. Film Festival entries (NO FEE) for category cash prizes will be accepted until December 02, 2013. Check out all of the new categories that are offered this season such as Drama, Comedy, Documentary, Action as well as Smart Phone, Sports Cam and Music Video and the General categories that are created for English, French and subtitled films. You can find all of this on www.wasagafilmfestival.com Think “Four Season Destination”, “Sundance Film Festival North”. Think “Snowman Mania Ball Hockey Tournament, Snow Sculpture Sensations, Chili Cook-off”. Think “Wasaga Beach Snowmobile Capital of Canada”. The Farmer’s Almanac is telling us we are in for one bodacious winter of snow. Think “Winter Outdoor Movies” at the Beach! This September alone we have the Wasaga Beach Home and Leisure Show September 14 & 15 at Stonebridge Town Centre, The Boogie Woogie Blues Banquet Thursday Sept 12 and the third annual Wasaga Beach (FREE) Blues Musical Festival in Stonebridge Town Centre September 13-15. Think “Best Blues Festival in Canada”. And more to come. We all know the beach is just the beginning. We would like to hear about new promotional ideas at Beach BOOSTER. Send them to us and we will get the right people involved to get them going. Our Churches, Service Groups, Sports Organizations, etc., are all good groups to sponsor an event. Let us come by and share some ideas about how you can make things happen in our town. All Wasaga Beach businesses can stay in the game by getting or staying involved in these winter events and keep our citizens and visitors having fun and building friendships. Planning over the winter can be a really good thing to also get ready for the new 2014 beach season making the 2014 May 24 weekend one without surprises. All this takes dedicated volunteers to make it happen. Drop me an email and we will connect you with the event or events you would like to volunteer towards. Big or small volunteer roles, we will hook you up. Beach Booster is here to help and enrich our community. “Be the Beach”, send me your thoughts and comments at Gary@beachBOOSTER.com on how we make our efforts count.

The first settler was George Carney, who arrived in 1835, when the place was described by the Tobacco Indians as “an Impenetrable swamp.” The place was first known to settlers as Hen and Chickens Harbour because of one large and four small islands in the bay. The locale had four other names connected with it in early years: Hurontario, New Village, Nattawa, and Old Village. In 1853 Collingwood was named for a township, formerly in Simcoe County, which in turn was named after the English admiral, Lord Cuthbert Collingwood. In 1933 a non-sectarian, nonpolitical international organization, the Associated Country Women of the World, was formed largely through the efforts of Margaret Watt, a native of Collingwood. She as elected the first president of the association.

Helen Keller Award

In 1925, Helen Keller attended the Lions Clubs International Convention and challenged Lions to become “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness”. In Ontario, the Lions Home for the Deaf designed an award call the Helen Keller Award to honor outstanding Lions, Lioness and Leos. The Wasaga Beach Lions Club presented Helen Keller Awards to two of our members, Lion Martin Campbell and Lion Beverly Fowler. Lion Martin is our Past President and is currently the Zone Chair 8 North. Besides the endless hours that he has contributed to the club, during his time as president, our club brought in 13 new members! Lion Beverly is another one of our hard working Lions looking after the attendance for the dinner meetings and decorating and she excelled as our “tail twister” for the past two years bringing laughter to the club. Beverly is also our best Toonie Draw Ticket seller at our Home and Garden Show. Congratulations to both Martin and Beverly! Lions meet the needs of local communities and the world. Our 1.35 million members - who perform community service in 207 countries and geographic areas - are different in many ways, but share a core belief: community is what we make it. When you join Lions, you join a global service network. So, at the same time you're doing local community service, you can also contribute to Lions volunteer efforts around the world.
