Point of View There is a great scene in the wonderful movie, "A River Runs Through It," where a father (played by Tom Skerritt) is reviewing the homework done by his oldest son (Craig Schiffer). He peers at the document over his reading glasses while his son nervously fidgets and says, “Half as much” as he hands the paper back to him. Some time later, the son returns and the critique process repeats. Again, Skerritt hands the page back to Schiffer and dismissingly says, “Half again,” which causes the son to roll his eyes as he goes back to the drawing board. The third time proved to be a charm and, presumably, the homework consists of a well thought out document using an economy of words as the boy is dismissed to the wonders of the Montana outdoors. An economy of words. Very few salespeople specialize in using an economy of words. Come to think of it, very few people in general! Most, formulate their point while they talk and edit on-the-fly. It may be great for them but we, the listener, suffer in the process. Half as much! The biggest mistake a salesman admits to making is that of talking too much. Isn’t that fascinating? We know it’s a fault and yet we do it. Again and again. The old adage, “God gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason. Do the math!” applies here. The advice, “stop talking so much!” is easier said than done. There is an element of Chatty Cathy in all of us. That’s why we are in sales and not employed as librarians. While you might not be able to control yourself, simply being aware of your own oral diarrhea is a starting point. If you are face-to-face with someone, read their body language as you speak. If the recipient’s eyes are glassing over, it’s not because they are hanging on your every word. Remember, it is possible to make your point by engaging the customer in conversation and make it a dialogue instead of a monologue. Half again! Have more unspoken thoughts. Come to think of it, maybe this week’s Point of View should consist of only those four words.

Chef Brian Nothing warms the soul more on a cool fall afternoon than a steaming bowl of mulligatawny soup. With its complex flavor, texture, and brilliant yellow color, this recipe has deep Indian roots and literally means pepper water. 2 Tablespoons olive oil 2 stalks celery, diced 1 carrot, peeled and diced 1 large onion, peeled and diced 1 chile pepper, seeded and diced 4 cups chicken stock 1/4 cup lentils salt and pepper to taste 1 Tablespoon curry powder 1/2 cup coconut milk 1-2 cups cooked basmati rice 1/2-1 cup shredded cooked chicken 1/2 cup tart raw apple, chopped fine Garnish: spoonsful 35% cream or coconut milk--and minced cilantro or parsley. Saute the celery, carrots, onion, and pepper in the oil at a low heat until the onion is translucent. Stir in the curry powder to blend and cook for a minute. Pour in the stock, add the lentils, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes. While the soup is simmering, cook the rice;. shred the chicken and chopped the apples finely. You don't need to skin the apples. When the soup is done, season to taste with the salt and pepper, then puree, solids first, in a blender. Return to pot. When ready to serve, bring the soup to a simmer and add the coconut milk. Take the pot to the table, as well as individual bowls of warm rice (heated in the microwave, if necessary), shredded chicken, finely chopped apple, coconut milk (or cream), and minced cilantro (or parsley). To serve, have big individual serving bowls at the ready. Spoon rice into each bowl (flat soup bowls are nice here)--then pile on a big spoonful of chicken and a spoonful of apple. Ladle the soup on top, then drip coconut milk or cream into the center and swirl Sprinkle with fresh cilantro and parsley. More than 90 percent of Canadian seniors currently receive their federal government payments by direct deposit so why are the remaining 10 percent holding out? Perhaps because of fear of the unknown, misconceptions about how the process works or they may simply be unaware the service even exists. The federal government is phasing out cheques for all of its payments, including Old Age Security (OAS), Canada Pension Plan (CPP), and the Guaranteed Income Supplement to name a few so any seniors who have not enrolled yet should do so as soon as possible. Here are some reasons to sign up: • There is virtually no risk of a payment being lost, stolen or damaged due to a postal strike, for example. • For those who like to travel, there is no need to stay home in order to be able to pick up the mail when cheques come in each month. • For people on fixed incomes, automatic deposits provide assurance that their money will always be there when they need it, on the day that it is due. • Eighty percent of payments are already made to Canadians by direct deposit. If seniors find it uncomfortable doing their business on the Internet, they can still visit their local bank branch and make the necessary arrangements in person. All they have to do is fill out a form, which the bank can help them do. Once the form is processed, payments from that point on will be deposited directly into their bank account. Direct deposit will help save you time and puts money in your pocket faster and more reliably. For seniors, you don't need to have a computer and you can still go to the bank and pay your bills in person and update your bank book; the only thing that changes is that your money is deposited electronically directly into the bank account of your choice. For those who are online, or who have a trusted advisor or caregiver, the direct deposit enrolment form can be found at www.directdeposit.gc.ca.

Your Home Appliances: An Energy Quiz Do you know which of your appliances suck up the most electricity? You may be surprised by the amount of wattage some of your household items use. Try guessing which appliance corresponds to each amount of wattage: 1. The Toaster a) 50 watts 2. The Refrigerator b) 725 watts 3. The Vacuum c) 800-1,400 watts 4. The Dishwasher d) 900-1,200 watts 5. The Water Heater (40 gallons) e) 1,000-1,440 watts 6. The Coffee Maker f) 1,000-1,800 watts 7. The Iron g) 1,200-2,400 watts 8. The Laptop h) 4,500-5,500 watts While one may think a big appliance like the refrigerator would require more electricity, it's actually your weekly vacuum, the toast and coffee you're making in the morning and the shirt you ironed that's really adding up on your energy bill. Make sure that when you upgrade your appliances, you're purchasing ENERGY STAR® products in efforts to be more energy efficient. Tips: Try to reduce the amount of times you open and close your refrigerator. Be mindful of how much hot water you're using because your water heater generates a huge portion of your energy consumption. Make sure there's a full load before you use your dishwasher. Unplug appliances when you're not using to avoid phantom energy use. Answers to the quiz: 1-C, 2-B, 3-E, 4-G, 5-H, 6-D, 7-F, 8-A

As the day quickly approaches, I would like to remind children and parents to practice safety precautions to make the evening a memorable one. For Parents: Discourage the use of masks on your children. Masks make it hard for children to see what's around them, including cars. Make-up is a better alternative. Costumes should fit properly to prevent trips and falls. Avoid oversized shoes, high heels, long dresses or capes. Select costumes with bright colors to increase your child's visibility. Add on reflective tape to costumes if possible. Children under 10 should be accompanied by an adult. By the age of 10, some children are ready to go trick or treating with a group of friends. Provide your child with a flashlight. A cell phone is a good idea if you have one. Draw a map outlining the route they should follow and set a curfew. Tell your children not to eat anything until they get home. Let your children draw the faces on pumpkins with a marker and leave the carving to parents. Start trick or treating early before it gets too dark. For Children and Youth: Carry a white bag or pillowcase for your candy, or add some reflective tape. Bring a cell phone in case you need to make an emergency phone call, don't abuse that privilege. Always travel in groups. Be sure there are at least 3 of you at all times. Don't visit houses that are not well lit. Never go inside a stranger's house. Walk on the sidewalk whenever possible. If there's no sidewalk, walk on the side of the road facing traffic. Don't criss-cross back and forth across the street. Never cross between parked cars, always at crosswalks, street corners or intersections. Don't eat your treats before you get home. When home, ask your parents to look through your treats with you to make sure everything is okay. For Homeowners: Turn on outdoor lights and replace burnt-out bulbs. Remove items from your yard or porch that might trip a child. Sweep wet leaves from your steps and sidewalk. Use alternatives to candles in your pumpkins such as a flashlight or battery-operated candle. If you do use a candle, never leave it unattended. For Drivers: Drive slowly in residential areas where children are more like to be trick or treating. Watch out for children, many of whom may be wearing costumes with masks that make it difficult for them to see. Children are excited; they may dart out in traffic. Remember that costumes can limit a child's vision and they may not be able to see your vehicle. Reduce your distractions and stay alert. Remember to enter and exit driveways slowly and carefully. Proceed with caution. Remember that safety is everyone's priority. If you observe suspicious activity, please call 1-888-310-1122 with information.

Entertainment in The Beach! Are you looking to Connect with Actors, Directors and Producers Online and find jobs? Introducing Stage 32 Stage 32.com is a new “free” social network for film, television, actor and industry related people that provides the user an opportunity to connect in a “virtual world” with like-minded creative people. The social media offering also provides the possibility of eventually connecting users in face-to-face meeting in order to collaborate. Launched in early 2012 Stage 32.com has spread across 186 countries garnering a total of over 150,000 members – it is known as the single most concentrated network for film and broadcast on the web. It is heralded as “Facebook meets Richard Botto LinkedIn” for creative people. You can find projects, upload your own concept and look for employment on the site. I've been a member for a year and have helped create international recognition for the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival. I had the pleasure of interviewing Richard Botto, Co-founder and CEO of Stage 32.com and Co-founder and CEO of Fair Warning Productions via Skype from Los Angeles. The Beach Corner podcast interview can be found at Beachbooster.blogspot.ca. Richard is a producer, actor and screenwriter. His screenplays: “The End Game” was a finalist at the 2012 Creative World Awards and “Rockets Red Glare” was a semifinalist at the 2012 Page Awards. Richard was the founder of RAZOR magazine where he was also publisher and editor of the national men's lifestyle magazine, which serviced a readership of 1.5 million at its peak. He was once named one of People Magazine's most eligible bachelors. Richard understands how crucial it is to network: “A lot of people don't understand how important it is for a creative to network. It's as important as honing your craft. You need to be a true collaborated. I don't benefit if you join or not it's a “free site”. Richard stated a lot of people around the world are isolated from Hollywood yet work in television and theatre lacking the connection to find jobs. Stage 32 can help by creating online peers and help further your career by creating virtual communities in terms of forming a writing group, or an acting group to help and assist in the development of a site user's career. Richard also goes to say that the number one reason people quit because they don't have the network or connection. Benefits of being a member: it's free and you have access to 150,000 members around the world. You can multiply your opportunity for your success you have a built-in support system 24/7 – 365 days a year. If you are as passionate about this industry as I am, Stage 32 is your first stop shop. I invite you to learn more about this great site at www.stage32.com.

Sylvia Bray of Grandma’s Beach Treats

We only seem to hear about businesses in our town when they are closing up shop and leaving. Traditionally, businesses are in business to compete and win. They look at getting the biggest piece of the pie and in some cases at the expense of others. In the words of Bob Dylan “The Times They Are A-Changin.” In Wasaga Beach we have a fresh approach to making the pie a whole lot bigger. Take Grandma’s Beach Treats at 1014 Mosley Street, for instance. They are one of our Beachers’ darling businesses. They are still growing and improving since being Wasaga Beach Business of the Year in 2009. They have reached a point where they are ready to expand doing business to business sales for some of their in-house signature treats. When our latest catering and specialty baking upstart “Taste of Paradise” broke onto the scene in Wasaga Beach, the conversation that was shared between Sylvia Bray Grandma’s Beach Treats owner and Pina Stillitano Taste of Paradise owner was about how they would complement each other’s businesses. Both businesses have specialities that are unique to their own business, which means, if you are at Grandma’s Beach Treats looking for a special occasion cake, the staff there will cheerfully refer you to Taste of Paradise. If you are at Taste of Paradise and want to find an ice cream cake guess what? The store attendants at Taste of Paradise at 57 Street S. and Mosley will keenly refer you to Grandma’s Beach Treats. In their book “Small Town Rules,” written by Becky McCray and Barry J. Moltz, they tell us customers are more empowered than ever these days. They can easily speak to one another directly through social media channels. Small town is just another word for community. Word gets around when you focus on overall customer’s needs and find ways to help people. It also rings true that you know you are in good customer serving hands when you hear that business owners Kareem Thomas and Pina Stillitano of Taste of Paradise hosts of this month’s Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce After/5, told us they chose Wasaga Beach as their home because of family and a good place to raise their children. And the Beach is just the beginning, as they say. As I was putting this story together, I learned that Darlene Lawlor Stringer of BlueShores Flowers & Gifts, 930 River Rd W, Wasaga Beach, had to leave to attend to her family in the East for several days in September. She didn’t leave her customers on the lurch because she forwarded her telephone calls to Cathy's Flower & Gift Boutique, 3081 Mosley Street, Wasaga Beach while she was gone so they would be looked after. When I talked to Darlene about it she was very forth coming in saying: “Gary, we do compete in the flower business in town but Cathy and I are friends, we always talk, we always look out for each other.” “Making the pie bigger and finding ways to help each other in our community”; you gotta love it. Oh and did you know? Grandma’s Beach Treats makes great pies as well. Beach Booster is here to help and enrich our community. “Be the Beach”, send me your thoughts and comments at gary@beachBOOSTER.com on how we make our efforts count.

Upper Canada’s deputy surveyor, Charles Rankin, surveyed the area in 1833 and left 900 acres (364.5) at the mouth of the Beaver River for a townsite, but did not survey it. His assistant, a Mr. Gifford, named the site Thornbury after his native town in Sommersetshire, England. Rankin settled just west on a tract of 200 acres (81 ha) on Laura Bay. In the late 1840's, Solomon Olmstead from Carleton County came to the are looking for a mill site. He and his brother Rufus built a sawmill on the Beaver River, then a store and a grist mill. When the post office was established in 1853, it was named Thornbury.

Fundraiser at Harvey’s Wasaga Beach

Water colour painting by Richard McNaughton, an established artist who makes his home near Priceville, Ontario. Richard painted this picture after a seeing a pre-fire photo of Wasaga Beach’s Historic Main Street after a rain. We have communicated with Richard and he has given Beach BOOSTER permission to use this great painting. www. richardmcnaughton.wordpress.com

On Sunday, September 15, Hon. Dr. Kellie Leitch with local individuals, organizations and community groups, worked together with Harvey’s Wasaga Beach to support two very important local charities; Wasaga Beach/Collingwood YMCA and Hospice Georgian Triangle. The day was busy with a lot of supporters who showed up to either volunteer or raise money for Hospice and the YMCA. It was a fun event and was from 12 noon until 4:00. There was a Bike Raffle with the bike provided courtesy of Canadian Tire. The YMCA was established over 160 years ago as a charity dedicated to the health of both individuals and communities. Their focus on inclusiveness and accessibility means they serve people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities through all stages of life. Through YMCA financial assistance programs, the YMCA is accessible to all. Hospice Georgian Triangle provides trained volunteer and professional care and support to individuals living with lifethreatening illness or in their last stages of living, to their families and to the bereaved. They operate as an integral partner of the health care system to ensure that palliative patients are treated with dignity, respect and receive compassionate care.
