Point of View “Grammar Bullies” Are The Worst Those who use their advanced knowledge to embarrass or humiliate others are the absolute worst. Yet, for whatever reason, language bullies don’t seem to get this, or they don’t care. Those who engage in public corrections of this sort often are looking to feel good about themselves, and, according to Benoît Monin, a psychology professor at McGill University, displays of language all-knowing-ness provide a ready-made, two-pronged opportunity to do so. “The way we evaluate our competence is relative to other people,” he says. “If I need to feel good about my language skills, one way that I could do that would be to give myself evidence that my language skills are awesome. Another is to give myself evidence that other people’s language skills suck. So by putting down other people, I can feel better about myself.” Beating someone up (figuratively) about anything is an interpersonal issue unspecific to grammar correctors, IMO. People who value good grammar don't mind being corrected and are often grateful. Generally speaking, I think that people who are bothered by being corrected are likely to have been making the same mistakes repeatedly over time and are sensitive to it because they're tired of being corrected. That's just human nature. They may even be aware of it and simply don't think it's a big deal – like a bad habit. Grammar correctors, on the other hand, do think it's a big deal, because words matter, and how we communicate thoughts and ideas matters. Poor grammar also affects how people view you professionally. Sure, there are a variety of colloquialisms that many of us use, but that's not the issue. Casual language can still be correct, but poor grammar can affect how people view your level of competence and professionalism.

Chef Brian

The creation of Caesar's Salad has been attributed to an Italian, Caesar Cardini, who at the time was a restaurateur in Tijuana, Mexico. According to records, supplies in the Cardini establishment ran short one holiday weekend in 1924. Caesar experimented and that evening the Caesar's Salad was born. "Take everything to the table" he said, "and make a ceremony of fixing the salad". Let guests think they're having the specialty of the house". Later, it was voted " the greatest recipe to originate from the Americas in fifty years" by the International Society of Epicures in Paris. 2-3 cups of bread croutons 2 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 large clove garlic 4-5 anchovy filets 1/2 tablespoon of dijon-style prepared mustard 2 tablespoons of red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon of lemon juice 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce 6-8 grinds (1/2 teaspoon) of black pepper 6 tablespoons of olive oil 1 raw egg 1 head of romaine lettuce, torn into largish pieces at least 1/2 cup of freshly grated Parmesan of Romano cheese With the holiday season rapidly approaching, tried and true recipes for appetizers are always in demand. This recipe for sausage rolls is a personal favorite. Quick and easy it is sure to wow your guests. It can also be served as a main course with pan gravy and a small salad. Ingredients Puff pastry sheets or 1 batch of rough puff pastry 1 lb ground pork 1 lb ground beef 1 tsp allspice 1 tsp oregano 1 tsp salt 1 tsp pepper 1 onion finely diced 3 cloves garlic 2 egg 1 cup bread crumbs +1 egg for brushing on the pastry continued.........

Centre Jason Arnott has announced his retirement after playing 1,244 games in 18 National Hockey League seasons. Arnott was the No. 7 overall pick of the Oilers in 1993 and recorded the first 239 points of his career with Edmonton. He finished with 938 points (417 goals and 521 assists) after spending time with the New Jersey Devils, Dallas Stars, Nashville Predators, Washington Capitals and St. Louis Blues. Arnott had not played since the end of the 2011-'12 season. "I am very proud and appreciative of the fact I was able to play at the highest level for 19 years, with the best players in the world," Arnott said in the NHLPA release announcing his retirement. "Each of the teams I played for provided me with great experiences and memories, and our Stanley Cup team in New Jersey certainly stands out among all of them." The Wasaga Beach native won the only Stanley Cup of his career with the Devils in 2000. Arnott also played for the goldmedal winning Canadian team at the 1994 world hockey championship.

Hey fellow Sled Heads. Thanks to the crew at Beach BOOSTER Group for asking me to contribute to beach BOOSTER Publication. Over the years I have been published in many snowmobile magazines including OSM, SNOW GOER, SLEDWORTHY MAGAZINE and SNOW TECH. I have also owned a snowmobile dealership and built some crazy sleds over the years. Wasaga Beach and beach BOOSTER are in my back yard and I'm eager to share my experiences with local sledders. I'm going to bring you safety and maintenance things to look for and hopefully save you from spending lots of money while being safe out in our winter wonderland! It's that time of year again... the leaves almost off the trees, heat is on in the house and as I am writing this story, they are calling for snow up in Hearst. I'm pretty sure that many of you are eager to go for that first rip, but before you jump on your ride remember one thing, sleds have been sitting for 8 months, and gas will go bad in a few very short months. If your sled has been stored in trailer or where it's been hot, you can bet its bad and going to cause you issues. Hopefully you put fuel stabilizer in your fuel and if you ride a 2 stroke you fogged your motor? These steps can prevent problems this time of year. Without this preventative action, the jets in two strokes can clog and lean out motor and that could cost you big bucks. Almost same with 4 strokes, you can plug up the injectors and same thing will happen resulting in damage to your motor. If you are mechanically inclined it is recommended you then drain your fuel, and take your carbs apart to make sure jets are not plugged. If you do not want to take on this task, take the sled to a dealer/shop and tell them you want it done. Not just a spray but a clean! Might cost you a few bucks now, but better than a few thousand later! Another important thing to check is drive bearings. Some manufactures have grease-able bearings, while some don't. (Yamaha) If your bearings fail and you don't catch it, you well spend thousands as it will damage your bulk head and you will have to replace it as well. Now these bearings only cost $30 each max and you can do yourself or a shop should only charge you 30 min labour. Common sense things to check are that all wheels, belts, tracks, steering and bushings. Get your front end off the ground and give it a good once over. Always check your fluids, change the oil if needed and inspect you heat exchangers for leaks. Once the mechanical is looked after, you should be good. Before heading out ...make sure trails are officially open! Even if we get a foot of fluff early, there a lot stuff lurking under the snow that you can hit causing serious damage to sled and yourself! Also, using the trails prior to them officially opening means you could be trespassing and abuse of the trails could result in them closing. Be patient! In future articles I will be covering all kinds of safety issues and cool new products for your sled. Next issue I'll introduce you to a new product you will love to keep you sled looking GREAT! Until next time... keep the rubber side down and ride safe, and enjoy the snow that WASAGA BEACH has to offer. Entertainment in The Beach! Nancy Island Theatre Building will be “Blue” World Diabetes Day World Diabetes Day is held every year on November 14th. The day aims to increase an awareness of the effects of diabetes and its complications amongst the general population and professionals in a range of sectors. The United Nations (UN) passed a resolution to designate November 14 as World Diabetes Day on December 20th, 2006. Governments, nongovernmental organizations and private businesses are encouraged to increase awareness of the disease, particularly among the general population and media. World Diabetes Day was first recognized on November 14, 2007 and it is now observed annually. According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), there are 371 million people worldwide living with diabetes including three million Canadians and six million people who have Pre-Diabetes. IDF estimates that over 344 million people worldwide are at risk for type 2 Diabetes. World Diabetes Day marks the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who, along with Drs. Charles Best, John MacLeod and James Bertram Collip co-discovered insulin in 1922. Canada is proud to have given the gift of insulin to the world. In an effort to raise awareness, many non-profit groups and individuals attempt to have local monuments lit up in blue. On November 14th from 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at the Main Street Bridge, Wasaga Beach will be part of the international list of community structures lit blue by lighting the Theatre Building on our Historic Nancy Island while promoting Wasaga Beach in a positive way on the World Stage. Joe Bickerstaff and Bill Frieday from Beach Booster Group are proud to be hosting this Fourth Annual event. You can expect free refreshments and snacks along with music and special guests. “We hope to again create a great, truly local visual experience for all who visit us on our Main Street Bridge this November 14th and for a fourth year, help create more awareness for World Diabetes Day” Bickerstaff said. This year, Members of the Wasaga Beach Lions Club, along with their friends and families, will walk in the Strides: Lions for Diabetes Awareness Event. The walk will begin at 4:00 p.m. from Boston Pizza at Stonebridge Town Centre going north across the Blue Bridge to the Main Beach with a rest station at the Sweet Tooth Store for coffee and chocolate then back to the finish line at Stonebridge Town Centre. Total distance will be 3 km. If you wish to participate contact the Wasaga Beach Lions Club at 705-429-3331. Registrations will be available at Stonebridge Town Centre from 3:00 p.m. The cost to join the walk is $5 per adult and no charge for 12 and under. Donations will also be accepted with funds going to Canadian Diabetes Association's Camp Huronda, a Summer Camp for Diabetic Children near Huntsville, Ontario. The Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce co-hosted the second annual Southern Georgian Bay Grow Your Business Expo on October 26th this year to celebrate Canada Small Business Week. The Business Expo attendees had the good fortune to learn from keynote speaker Rob Thorburn on how to successfully grow their business. Rob Thorburn, Chairman of Scenic Caves Nature Adventure, Blue Mountains, shared his winning formula for growing his family owned tourist attraction business amidst some of the most challenging economic hurdles we have experienced over the last 10 years such as SARS, West Nile Virus, 9/11, the Dot Com Bust, a couple of wars, a few federal and provincial changes in government and the world financial meltdown in 2008. His tourist attraction grew annual revenues from 180K$ to over $4 million over that time period. Mr. Thorburn grew his business from a bankrupted company purchase taking it to a continually growing going concern tourist attraction business that is heralded by its experience seeker customers and recognized by its tourism industry peers, garnering unprecedented regional, provincial and national business awards that would rival private tourist attraction businesses right across Canada. An eye for inherent value, a vision, a business concept, a strategy, a play book, engagement in your industry and plain old hard work equals SUCCESS. Rob Thorburn intonated that you have to roll up your sleeves and tenaciously manage each aspect of the business in order to make it happen. There is no free lunch. With an unwavering eye on the vision, entrenched in the guest experience business concept, Rob fashioned what he termed as a “cluster” of tourism importance strategy which continues to pay off in spades even today. This strategy has created the synergies 1+1 = 4 that his business is reaping from. Every new experience added to the Mother Ship attraction brings additional thrills and awe to the overall experience while adding to the economies of scale and scope of the business. His leadership and dedicated involvement in the tourism industry helped him create relevance for his business and build a path for other local tourism operators. What you learn from Rob Thorburn is that you just can’t develop a shopping list type vision and expect to succeed. It’s strategic fit with the market requirements, the clustering of complementary growth to exploit synergies and a need for a robust play book in order to roll out sustainable growth. This combined with a lot of hard work, dedication and tenacity will make it happen. You may conclude that we can learn a lot from Rob Thorburn’s success formula right here in the Beach. We could likely benefit from developing a sun, wind, snow, water, beach cluster strategy of our own. “Be the Beach”, send me your thoughts and comments at Gary@beachBOOSTER.com on how we make our efforts count. How our local places were named Craigleith In Collingwood Township., Grey County, on Nottawasaga Bay off Georgian Bay on Hwy. 26 and County Road 19, 9 km NW of Collingwood. A post office called Craigleith open in 1857, and two years later William Pollard started an oil extraction business unique in Ontario. For four years until...unable to compete with a cheaper product from SW Ontario. Pollard extracted oil from bituminous shales along the lakeshore.

A growing demand for artifical light led to the establishment, in 1859, of a firm headed by William Darley Pollard of Collingwood. He erected a plant here to obtain oil through the treatment of local bituminous shales. The process, patented by Pollard, involved the destructive distillation of fragment shales in cast-iron retorts heated by means of wood. The 30 to 35 tons of shale distilled daily yielded 250 gallons of crude oil, The enterprise, the only one of its kind in the province’s history, failed by 1863. The inefficiency of its process made its products uncompetitive after the discoveries of “free” oil at Petrolia and Oil Springs, near Sarnia

A plaque in adjacent Craigleith Provincial Park tells of a dramatic rescue of the crew of the Mary Ward, which went aground on a nearby reef on Nov. 24, 1872, with 27 people on board. Of two lifeboats launched, one capsized in the violent storm and eight men were lost. Nine who remained on board were rescued by Craigleith men who risked their lives in small boats.

As the season approaches, the excitement starts to build on those cold crisp mornings. We're looking forward to the first blast of winter and getting our sleds ready for our first ride! As a Club we have been busy. The Club made a significant purchase by partnering with Central Ontario Powersports, which delivered a Polaris Ranger side-by-side to help support trail work. WSC Treasurer, Gary Taylor, stated “We look forward to working with Central Ontario Powersports this coming season at our inaugural Snowsquall event!” As any enthusiast knows, snowmobiling is about an emotional connection to the winter experience, to the trails and to our sleds. It is also about a very special winter lifestyle choice that is totally unique. The Wasaga Snowmobile Club is embracing this choice. Groomer Manager, Graeme Macklin said “We will be dedicated to ensuring that our trails are among the best in the province. This season the groomer will run 2 shifts ensuring smooth trails; a challenge that the grooming team are eager to meet!” Over the last few years, members of the Wasaga Snowmobile Club's new executive have brought many new ideas and initiatives to snowmobiling in Central Ontario and will continue to do so, inviting all passionate snowmobilers to join our cause. Come say hello out on the trail at our club house. We hope to have the club house open for our fellow enthusiasts to come and warm up by the fireplace and enjoy a hot drink. The Wasaga Snowmobile Club is a proud member and supporter of Mid Ontario Snowmobile Trails. M.O.S.T. is an association of 5 clubs working together, sharing resources and working progressively to further our passion and sport –snowmobiling! Grant Wicks, our Club President said “The dedicated team work has proven that coming together was the beginning, keeping together is progress …and working together is success. We are well on our way to a great season.” We look forward to seeing everyone out and about on the trails! Dave Farr WSC, Director of Strategic Planning

Natural Medicine: Separating Fact From Fiction Sleeping Medications Linked to Increased Risk of Cancer, Heart Disease and Death Dr James Meschino DC, MS, ND, ROHP A very eye-opening study was published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ Open) in Feb 2012, which showed a strong correlation between the use of prescription sleeping medications and increased risk of cancer, heart attack, death and other health conditions. The lead researcher was Daniel Kripke from a renowned Sleep Center in San Diego. His research team followed over 10,000 patients who were taking prescription sleeping pills during the study period of 2.5 years, and compared health-related events to almost 24,000 individuals, who were not taking these prescription drugs. The drugs incriminated were the standard benzodiazepine medications (such as valium, ativan etc) as well as some of the newer classes of drugs we see advertised on television (e.g. ambien). In a published statement co-author of the study Robert D. Langer ( Jackson Hole Centre for Preventive Medicine in Jackson, Wyoming) said, “We tried every practical strategy to make these associations go away, thinking that they could be due to use by people with more health problems, but no matter what we did the associations with higher mortality held.” (http://post.jagran.com/sleeping-pillscontributes-to-occurrence-of-cancer-heartdisease-study-1330427652 ) I personally have always wondered why the medical profession would use these drugs as the first line of treatment in sleep disorders, as it has been shown that sleep disorders in adults

Editor's note: With this issue of beach BOOSTER introducing our new "There's SNOW BEACH... like Wasaga Beach" feature and also welcoming back the Wasaga Snowmobile Club back to our publication, we are reprinting The Way Wasaga Was about our days as "The Snowmobile Captial". Visit our Popular beach BOOSTER Blog to see a great video from the mid 70's showing the sledding action in The Beach! Direct Link: http://goo.gl/OcQIGK With the popularity of snowmobiling catching on in the late 60’s and early 70’s, there was all kinds of optimism in Wasaga Beach that finally we had come to a point where we could truly be a four season destination. We had it all with the snow, the hotels that lined the beach and river and all within an easy drive up the 400 from Toronto. Hotel, bar and restaurant owners rushed to winterize their establishments and advertised “Open All Year” for the first time in Wasaga’s history. The Nottawasaga River seemed to freeze completely every year, providing a smooth and fun “throughway”, allowing access to most points in town. Hotels

is primarily a result of an age-related decline in melatonin secretion from the pineal gland. Melatonin helps put us into a deep sleep. Melatonin is also an important brain antioxidant, immune modulator, and higher levels are linked to a reduced risk of cancer, especially breast and prostate cancer. Melatonin supplementation has been shown to be a safe and effective therapy for insomnia, and the side effects include better free radical protection of brain cells (which may reduce of Alzheimer’s disease according experimental studies), improved immune function and reduced cancer risk. Dr Lissoni in Italy showed the medical community several years ago that melatonin supplementation is an important aspect of treating breast and prostate cancer (as part of adjunctive management of these cancers). I prefer to provide patients with a supplement that contains melatonin, 5-hydroxytryptophan (5HTP), GABA and bacopa monnieri. The 5HTP enables the brain to make more melatonin (and serotonin) if it requires it, GABA stimulates the GABA receptors to reduce anxiety and improve sleep quality and bacopa monnieri (used in India) is proven to help preserve memory as we age and block free radical damage to brain cells (a very important anti-aging effect). We knew a long time ago that benzodiazepine drugs (like ativan and valium) can result in physical and psychological dependency welcomed sledders into their dining rooms and beverage rooms with great meals and live entertainment. Motel rooms were occupied with snowmobilers and parking lots lined with cars and trailers. Once visitors unloaded their sleds, these snow machines provided the only means of transportation necessary for the rest of the stay in Wasaga Beach. River front establishments like the Dyconia Resort, The Nancy Villa, The Allistonia Hotel and The Apollo were just a quick zip up or down the frozen Nottawasaga, while even the famous Windjammer Room of the Capstan Inn on the beach opened to entertain the devotees of this new winter sport. Wasaga Beach became known as "The Snowmobile Capital of Ontario" as enthusiasts from all over south and central Ontario discovered our town as true Winter Getaway. Close enough... but far enough to provide the fresh air, the openness and of course the much longed for snow! To serve the sledders, Wasaga Beach boasted first class dealerships for most of the major snowmobile manufactures. Bing Jowett’s Four Seasons Sports sold Arctic Cat sleds and grew to be able to boast that they were the biggest Arctic Cat dealership in Ontario. Yes, the sign stated... “Ontario’s Largest Cat House”! The Wasaga Beach Winter Carnival attracted even more folks as special events were held in the centre of the frozen river, under the Main Street Bridge. Radar Runs and thrill riders jumping ramps added to the fun. Whipper Billy Watson hosted is famous Snowarama from Wasaga Beach. Although we don’t get the use of the river in the winters of today as it does not seem to freeze as it did in the past, the Wasaga Snowmobile Club provides us with some of the best maintained marked snowmobile trails in the country! Wasaga Beach is snowmobile friendly and we and our visitors can ride sleds almost anywhere on our local roads that connect us to the trail system and of course the beach. Follow us in beach BOOSTER and on our popular blog to keep up to date on the many snowmobile related activities happening though the winter months this year. Beach BOOSTER Radio will also broadcast Ontario Trail Reports. Beach BOOSTER wants Wasaga Beach to once again be The Snowmobile Capital of Ontario! Let’s encourage safe, fun sledding in town this winter and remember to welcome our winter visitors!

(addiction) if used on a regular basis. Now we learn that these drugs, and the newer generation of sleeping pills, may also increase risk of cancer, heart attack, premature death and other health ailments. If you have been prescribed sleeping pills I would suggest that you speak with your doctor about getting weaned off of them, and try a more natural route, using a supplement combining the safe and effective agents outline above (melatonin, 5HTP, GABA and bacopa monnieri). The side effects of this combination may help reduce your risk of cancer, keep your immune system strong, and protect your brain from age-related free radical damage, without risk of dependency.
