Rotary President Ehab Masad Guest Speaker at Breakfast at the Beach The Networking Committee for the Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce is pleased to MAIN announce that the speaker for the next 'Breakfast JANUARY at the Beach' on Thursday December 12th at 7:00am-8:30am will be Ehab Masad, the Rotary President. The breakfast will be held at Georgian Circle Family Restaurant, 1441 Mosley St., Wasaga Beach.

As December is a time of "Giving" our committee thought that this would be an appropriate time to hear from one of our service clubs. Ehab's topic will be "Rotary, the Art of Giving". He will be speaking about past, present and future projects that Rotary is involved with and the vital role that Rotary plays in our community and beyond.

Ehab is a 1997 graduate in Public Administration from Yarmouk University in Jordan. Ehab moved with his family to Wasaga Beach in 2006, following several years with TD Canada Trust in Toronto and Pickering. He fell in love with a house on the river in Wasaga Beach and transferred to the TD Canada Trust in Stayner. Two years later he opened Harveys's Wasaga Beach and a year later opened Harvey's in Alliston. He had grown accustomed and familiar with the bank, but felt a calling towards his entrepreneurial side.

Ehab is the current president of the Wasaga Beach Rotary Club; he is a former Director of the Wasaga Beach and Alliston Chamber of Commerce and Chair of the ll Classes Promote Wasaga Committee. Point of View I'm remembering more than veterans today. Thanks to my husband for asking me a question that gave me insight into the events that created 41 years of sorrow. Here's the story: My sister and I were like twins because we were 8 months apart and we were both preemies at 7 months. My mom used to dress us the same. My sister and I shared a room because my parents could only afford 2 bedroom apartments. At 11 years old (41 years ago), my parents had saved enough to buy a house. My sister and I got our own room. The problem was we didn't ask to be separated. What's worse is I got the slightly bigger room. My parents said it was because I was older. My sister started feeling like she was in my shadow and I started feeling entitled. Sometimes, I would borrow her clothes without asking. We never slept in each other's rooms, but I often invited her to sit with me and our cat in my room. We laughed a lot when we were together. She left home at 19 and got involved in activities that had nothing to do with me. I stayed with my parents until they sold the house a year later and then I went to live with my mom. I realized this morning in answer to Dave's question that separate rooms was the beginning of the end for me and my sister. After that we only experienced more and more separation. (Maybe this is why I felt an immediate kinship with second runner up twin Anna and her sister Eva when I met them on Last Bride Standing 4 years ago.) There are 4 sister only times I recall. The first was when she agreed to go out to a movie with just me. We dressed in the same way Birkenstocks, long hair and long skirts – and went to see a movie called ‘The Stuntman’. I went to see that movie alone 9 times after that and learned all the words. I realized this morning it was because I missed my sister. The second time was after I smoked up with friends and laughed so much while I was high that I wanted to share it with her. We arranged a visit with just the two of us and laughed so much with each other that her husband thought we were both crazy. The third time was when she accepted my invited to stay over at my little place in the woods where I lived with Ilyan in Hockley Valley and she agreed to see my favourite place at the top of a hill. We ran down the hill laughing and letting out a big yell with our arms flying in the air under a full summer moon. The 4th time was in her hospital before she died of breast cancer at age 36. I spent many visits over 6 weeks alone with her in that room. On one visit we changed into each other’s clothes and I took her for a walk in her wheelchair. I also returned a while cotton dress I had borrowed a few years earlier. By the way, the whole clothes thing weighed heavily on me for years. I bought her a dress when I was in Greece in 1982 and she wore it while pregnant with my niece. It became her favourite dress and I have a picture of her wearing it. The question Dave asked me was if I think I could have prevented my sister’s cancer and moreover, what could I have done. This was my answer. In writing this a couple of hours later, I wonder could my sister’s cancer have been prevented if we had not had separate rooms? Cancer is a disease of resentment. She resented me for years, but I never figured out why until this morning.

It is precious to remember how much other people mean to us and how much they changed our lives for the better, even if we can’t tell them directly because they’re gone.

Time to take a few minutes of silence and remember...

Chef Brian My grandmother's potato and leek soup recipe was always a favorite this time of the year, and the skillet cornbread she served with it, hot and dripping with butter, made it a hearty meal.

Potato Leek Soup Recipe INGREDIENTS 3 large leeks ( washed and chopped) 2 Tbsp butter 2 cups milk 2 cups chicken broth 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and cut into ½ inch pieces 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley 2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme, or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme Tabasco sauce or hot sauce Salt & Pepper Cook leeks in butter with salt and pepper in a medium sized sauce on low heat for 10 minutes.

Do not brown leeks! Browning will give the leeks a burnt taste.

Add milk, broth, and potatoes. Bring to a low simmer and cook for 20 minutes. Scoop about half of the soup mixture into a blender, puree and return to pan. Add parsley, and thyme. Add a few dashes of hot sauce to taste. Add some freshly ground pepper, 1-2 teaspoons salt or more to taste.

Skillet Cornbread Ingredients 2 to 3 teaspoons bacon drippings or vegetable oil 2 cups buttermilk 1 large egg 1 3/4 cups white cornmeal 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt Butter Preparation Coat bottom and sides of a 10-inch cast-iron skillet with bacon drippings or vegetable oil; heat in a 450° oven for 10 minutes.

Whisk together buttermilk and egg. Add cornmeal, stirring well.

Stir in baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Pour batter into hot skillet. If you do not have a cast iron skillet a ceramic dish works.

Bake at 450° for 15 minutes. Serve with butter.

Seed and finely dice a jalopeno and stir in for an added kick

With the Christmas holiday shopping season getting underway, I would like to suggest a number of ways to make sure that your purchases make it under the Christmas tree and not into the hands of an opportunistic thief. During this time of the year, we have in the past, seen a rather disturbing trend that has seen sadness and not the joy that the season should bring. Some safe shopping tips are: 1) Keep wallets and purses safely secured on your person at all times, not left unattended in a shopping cart as you go looking for that perfect gift.

2) Don't carry large amounts of currency. Utilize debit and or credit cards and only carry those cards you are planning to use. Remember to always protect and shield your PIN number from wondering eyes.

3) If using cash, only obtain it from recognized financial institution banking machines and not stand alone ATM's as many of the standalone units are known to be targets of various skimming devices.

4) Don't carry large amounts of gifts. These could block you view and a mishap can happen.

5) If you must leave your purchase in your vehicle secure them in a trunk or in the case of sport utility vehicles or pickup trucks, place them on the floor and cover them with a blanket.

6) Always make sure your vehicle is locked both in the store parking lot and at home.

7) Shop during the day if possible.

8) If you must shop at night, park your vehicle in a well-lit area where you can quickly and easily find it.

9) When travelling to your parked vehicle do so with keys ready and once in lock all your doors again.

10) Report any suspicious activity to store security or to Police immediately.

All businesses should exercise caution at this time of year through reinforcement and review of crime prevention measures. Ensuring that all staff review current internal crime prevention policies, are aware of their surroundings and noticing the behaviour of clients, can go a long way towards preventing a possible crime. Also it is important to make certain that time deposit safes are in place and locked, video surveillance measures are in place and properly adjusted to assist in the identification of persons should a crime occur. In order to minimize any potential financial losses, managers should see that minimal amounts of cash are available at any given time.

Routines with respect to the handling of cash should be avoided and staff charged with the transportation of money to a financial institution should do so in the company of other staff at times that should vary. I encourage business owners and employees to contact Police immediately should they observe any suspicious activity or persons either in or around their business. Entertainment in The Beach!

Dir en grey Wowed Their Fans!

Japanese rock band Dir en grey wowed the crowd at the Opera House in Toronto on November 14th. This was their 8th city out of fourteen scheduled North American cities that began in Dallas, TX on November 3rd ending at the House of Blues in Los Angeles on November 24th. This is their first tour after almost two years. Dir en grey is composed of Kyo, vocalist, Kaoru and Die, guitarists, Toshiya, bassist and Shinya drummer. Formed 16 years ago they are known for their unique cross-cultural and talented qualities. The band has achieved legendary status overseas. In August 2011, Dir en grey released their 8th studio album, “Dum Spiro Spero”, this was their strongest most acclaimed worldwide record. In 2012, vocalist, Kyo, damaged his throat and was ordered by his doctors to refrain from singing temporary. However in February of this year, the band returned with a new single “The Unraveling”. You would never guess that Kyo had an issue with his throat. The Toronto show was an amazing blend of theatrical drama and hard rock music. Kyo's passionate performance bewitched the audience as he sang covered in a black veil with an impressive skull makeup. At times it would feel creepy when coloured lights shined over the front man. Beach Corner had a quick interview with Die, guitarist of the band prior to the concert. Die was excited to be back in North America and to meet Canadian fans. He indicated that touring in America is different than in Japan. The band travelled North America on a tour bus living with the crew and band members but it didn't seem to damper Die's enjoyment of visiting these cities and meeting people along the way. When asked what can be expected of the Ghoul Tour Die explains: “This time we want to bring something new on stage sharing a little bit of our stage production from Japan that fans have never seen before and we are excited to showcase the fans.” I asked Die what was the meaning of “Ghoul” and Kyo's dramatic transformation for this tour and he expressed “In Japan, Ghoul came out in September and the band had two set lists this is how they toured. In America, we combined both giving the fans an opportunity to enjoy the different style of shows from Japan in one concert.” When the band members left the stage encore screaming fans were chanting “Dir en grey”, the band returned with Kyo, vocalist, shirtless and no makeup, shouting “Last song” to the audience. Dir en grey didn't disappoint their fans as applause and screams could be felt throughout the Opera House. As you exited the venue you couldn't help but hear how Dir en grey left a lasting impression on their fans and how they are looking forward to their return to North America once again. Hey Beachers the Film Festival is almost upon us. We still need volunteers and we are still looking for business sponsors. You can contact the Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce at 705 429-2247 and tell them to direct you to Film Festival Committee.

The deadline for film and video submissions is December 02, 2013 and the View, Vote, Red Carpet Gala is scheduled for Saturday January 25th, 2014 at the Wasaga Beach RecPlex. Times will be announced soon with a roster of artists and entertainers that will delight you. Be prepared to be rocked and awed!

This is the annual event we deliberately staged in the shoulder season. Why? To give Beachers a great place to enjoy themselves and meet the world in January and to give visitors the opportunity to explore our winter fun in Wasaga Beach.

The Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival aims to showcase the best in category short films submitted by individuals, groups, companies, teaching institutions and associations. Our film festival, modelled after the Sundance Film Festival in terms of training and development underpinnings and supporting film makers in the Southern Georgian Bay area has the following vision “Bringing the World to Wasaga Beach through a shared passion for film and the power of storytelling.”

Our vision is based on capturing the imagination of film makers and actors at the grass roots level creating an opportunity for international exposure while eliminating entry barriers and providing a focus for talent, passion, capability and achievement. This means no fees and no barriers. A simple smart phone film can get you into the competition. The film festival is an opportunity to show off the natural beauty of our location and to inspire our local participants to produce films that will promote the beauty, vibrancy, vitality and quality of life of Wasaga Beach. This year we are also inviting our neighbouring and international entrants to submit their films and videos to our festival to bring their films and stories to our community in the languages of French and English and subtitles for other language submissions. So far we have submissions from Sweden, Australia, California, Israel and England amongst our local entries.

We have created new categories for our third annual Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival to position our festival as an international festival attracting national and international entrants and thereby enhancing our position as a prominent film festival while providing more exposure for our local Southern Georgian Bay entrants and keeping to our vision, mission and goals.

We believe the Wasaga Film Festival target audience and base of participants will grow to international proportions given the festival's unique enabling approach to grass roots film enthusiasts coupled with the interest in Wasaga Beach nested in Southern Georgian Bay as a preferred Canadian and international destination. We intend to roll out the "BLUE Flag Beach" carpet to our film festival partners and participants for our third annual Wasaga Film Festival scheduled for January 2014.

How our local places were named Eugenia In Artemesia Township., Grey County on the West shore of Eugenia Lake, head of the Beaver River and County Road 13, 53 km Southeast of Owen Sound. In the 1850's a deer hunter was reported to have found gold in the rocks near a 70-foot (23-m) waterfall.

The stampede was on, but the “gold” turned out to be iron pyrites, also know as “fool’s gold”. Some of the would-be miners stayed on to try farming, and government surveyors laid out a village site. A French ex-soldier who was a member of the survey party suggested naming the place Eugenia after the Empress Eugenia, wife of Napoleon III, When the post office was established in 1862 it took that name.

We as club volunteers are always eager to roll out the red carpet by pointing out amenities specific to snowmobilers. Whether its direction for gas, restaurants or that club supporting dealer, there is always someone at the club happy to point you in the right direction. This family atmosphere extends ones peace of mind as well. If a sled is stopped on the trail you can count on just about every sled slowing down to see if assistance is required or that everything is all right. If the issue is of mechanics, off come the gloves followed by a quick” let me take a look”. The friendship is also here in our conversations, watching welcomed strangers around the fire is always amazing. Battles of the brands, where they have had great rides or simple great conversations taking place, as a snowmobiler you are hard pressed not to find a friendly conversation you can join. We have a natural camaraderie, a strong sense of family, we put on our helmets and leave the worlds troubles behind to escape for a few hours to enjoy our passion snowmobiling. It's the people that make the difference, the Landowners, the Volunteers and the snowmobilers.

Natural Medicine: Separating Fact From Fiction Prostate Cancer Sceening Should Begin at 40: Latest British Study Dr James Meschino DC, MS, ND, ROHP A landmark study published in the British Medical Journal has shown that a man’s PSA level, assessed in his early to mid 40’s, is highly predictive of future development of prostate cancer. PSA stands for prostate specific antigen. Cancer cells secrete PSA into the bloodstream, thus a high PSA raises the suspicion of prostate cancer. However, other factors can increase blood PSA levels to a mild to moderate degree, as well, such as infection, prostate enlargement (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH) and recent ejaculation. Although prostate cancer suspicion has traditionally been reserved for men with a PSA level above 4 ng/ml, British researcher showed that for men age 45-49 yrs a PSA level of about 1.5 ng/ml or higher (top 10% percentile) was linked to 44% of future deaths of prostate cancer over the 2530 year study period.

The British study also showed that the risk of developing metastatic prostate cancer within 15 years is close to three-fold higher for men in the top level PSA at age 45-49 and close to ten-fold higher at age 51-55. This suggests that starting to perform PSA screening after age 50, which is customary, would leave a significant proportion of men at elevated risk of later being diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer, which is incurable at this point in time. The British study suggests that it may be wise to begin screening men at age 40. Any man with a PSA level at or above 1.4 ng/ml should be monitored very closely (1).

In addition to close monitoring these men should also be educated about the link between diet and lifestyle, which have been shown to be linked to 75-80% of prostate cancer cases (2) As many studies have shown that diet, lifestyle and certain supplements can influence develop and progression of prostate cancer, providing men with evidence-based dietary, lifestyle and supplementation strategies to combat prostate cancer should be included in consultations with all men regarding prostate health, especially with men who are shown to be at high risk (3-9).

I recently had a patient in his early 50’s whose PSA rose from 1.4 ng/ml to 2.6 ng/ml within a 12 month period. He refused to have the recommended biopsy, fearing bleeding, pain, and infection from the procedure. I devised a supplement program for him, based on current research, along with dietary modifications. Within 9 months the lifestyle program I designed for him lowered his PSA back down to 1.4 ng/ml, while showing steady reductions in the PSA level at the 3, 6 and 9 month follow-up assessments.

His family doctor and urologist were most impressed with the results. Below you find the exact diet and supplementation program I recommended. This lifestyle plan is not a replacement for prostate cancer assessment and conventional treatment, but should be part of an attempt to lower PSA levels in high-risk patients and as the adjunctive nutritional management in patients with diagnosed prostate cancer.

Meschino Protocol Adjunctive Nutrition and Supplementation Recommendations For Men with Prostate Cancer or a PSA Level Above 2.5 (if over 50 yr), or PSA Level at or above 1.4 (if 40-49 yr), or a PSA Velocity that has Increased Abruptly Within a One year Period (more than 0.35 ng/ml): Dietary and Lifestyle Prescription:· N o r e d meat, pork, lamb, duck · No deep fried foods, no foods that are cooked to completion via pan-frying in oil · No cheese, no milk or yogurt above 1% milk fat, no egg yolks, no butter, no cream, no mayonnaise · No frozen yogurt or ice cream · No sugar, honey or brown sugar in coffee or espresso · No alcohol of any kind (including red wine) · Eat at least one cruciferous vegetable per day (broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kale, bok choy, cauliflower) · Eat soy products if possible (stir fry tofu with mixed vegetables, edamame, roasted soy nuts, soy milk) · No high fat pastries (cheat with a biscotti, or low fat muffin) · Eat beans and peas daily if possible – including vegetarian lentil soup · 8 ounces of pomegranate juice per day

SHARING MEMORIES: STORIES OF WASAGA’S PAST I became Town Archivist in a voluntary capacity after my retirement as a town employee in 2006. My love of Wasaga and its varied history has been strengthened as I write historical stories for a local newspaper. After gathering over 30 of them, it was time to put the tales into a book, made possible with the support of the Town of Wasaga. The stories have been re-written and pictures rescanned to provide better quality. All proceeds from this book will go directly to the Wasaga Beach Archives for a future Archive/Museum. I do not personally receive any residuals.

The book can be purchased at the Chamber of Commerce, Town Office, Library/Archives, Pedro’s, Beach Builders, Canadian Tire, Wasaga IDA and the Beach BOOSTER office at 1383 Mosley Street.
