Point of View Why Do We Use Red & Green for Christmas Colours? Red and green have come to represent the colours of Christmas. We tend to incorporate these colours in our holiday decorating, present wrapping and even clothes. Green and red cover our Christmas tables and light up the CN Tower. When it comes to determining how these colours came to be associated with Christmas, there are several schools of thought. Religion In Catholic beliefs, the colours red and green correlate directly to Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ was nailed to a cross and crucified so that all people would have the chance to be saved--the colour red is meant to symbolize the blood that Christ shed during this time. Green is the colour of all things living; it represents the hope for eternal life that is possible because of Christ's sacrifice. The "Paradise Play” During the Middle Ages, churches held Miracle Plays to teach the public about important religious events. A popular one performed on Dec. 24 was titled the "Paradise Play." The "Paradise Play" told the story of Adam and Eve. It showed how they were created, their sin of sampling an apple from the forbidden tree and eventually their exile from Eden. The scenery used for this play was a Paradise Tree, a green fir tree decorated with red apples. Surviving the Winter During the harsh winter, hardly any plants blossom, let alone survive. The few plants that do endure and prosper during the winter season eventually became with Christmas, a winter celebration. Holly, with its green leaves and red berries, was thought to drive away evil spirits and was placed over doorways to protect those who lived within. Other red and green plants that symbolize Christmas are poinsettias, evergreens, firs and mistletoe. Red & Coca-Cola Many people believe Santa Claus dons a red suit because of Coca-Cola's signature red colour, but this is untrue. In 1862, a Civil War cartoonist named Thomas Nast began drawing Santa in a tan suit. He continued to draw him for 30 years; somewhere during that time, he changed the colour of Santa's suit to red. Since then, artists have continued portraying Santa in red. In the 1930s, the Coca-Cola Co. hired artist Haddon Sundblom to design Santa Claus advertisements. Sundblom depicted Santa in the red suit for the company's winter ad campaign. Decorations Ever since green and red developed as our primary Christmas colours, we have used them as a major part of our holiday decorating. One of the largest Christmas icons is the green Christmas tree. People adorn their front doors with green wreaths and hang mistletoe in doorways. The suit which Santa Claus wears is red, and so is the nose of his reindeer, Rudolph. Red and green also are popular colours in Christmas lights, bows, stockings, candles and ornaments. Chef Brian Gayle and I would like to wish all of our readers a very special Merry Christmas this year and remind everyone that Jesus is the reason we celebrate the season. One of my favorite recipes this time of the year is pumpkin cheesecake. Rich and creamy and combining my two favorite things, pumpkin pie and New York style cheesecake, this recipes is a keeper. The gingerbread crust really does make a difference. My Pumpkin Cheesecake For the gingersnap crust: 1/4 lb. gingersnaps (about 20 small cookies) 1/3 cup pecan halves 1/4 cup firmly packed light brown sugar 4 Tbs. (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, melted For the filling: 3/4 cup firmly packed light brown sugar 1 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp. ground allspice 1/4 tsp. ground ginger 1/4 tsp. ground cloves 1 lb. cream cheese, at room temperature 3 eggs 1 cup pumpkin puree For the topping: 1/2 cup pecan halves 1 Tbs. unsalted butter 2 Tbs. granulated sugar Preheat an oven to 350°F. Lightly butter a 9-inch spring form pan. To make the crust, in a food processor, combine the gingersnaps and pecans and process until crumbly. Add the brown sugar and melted butter and pulse for a few seconds to blend. Transfer the crumb mixture to the prepared pan. Use your fingers to pat the mixture into the bottom and evenly all the way up the sides of the pan. Refrigerate for 20 minutes. To make the filling, in a small bowl, stir together the brown sugar, cinnamon, allspice, ginger and cloves. In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese with an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth and creamy. Using a rubber spatula, occasionally scrape down the sides of the bowl. Gradually add the brown sugar mixture, beating until smooth. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the pumpkin puree, beating until smooth. Using the rubber spatula, scrape the batter into the chilled crust and smooth the top. Bake the cheesecake until set or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean, 35 to 40 minutes. Transfer the pan to a wire rack and let cool completely. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. To make the topping, set aside 10 pecan halves and coarsely chop the rest. In a small fry pan over medium-high heat, melt the butter. Add all of the pecans, sprinkle with the granulated sugar and cook, stirring, until the sugar melts and the nuts are toasted and caramel coated. Transfer the nut mixture to a plate and let cool completely, then store in an airtight container. Just before serving, sprinkle the chopped pecans over the cheesecake and arrange the halves evenly Chef Brian Edwards

Hey sled heads! Wow! I can't believe I'm writing my second story for beach Booster already! As a new resident to the Wasaga Beach area, I am amazed at the rich history of snowmobiling in The Beach. We were once known as the Snowmobile Capital of Ontario! My question is… what happened? This town has it all, motels, shopping, dining, entertainment and most importantly... the trails. Well folks…. I have some exciting news! One of the biggest winter events to hit Wasaga Beach is coming to town January 4th & 5th! Beach BOOSTER , NASDRA (North American Snowmobile Drag Racing Association) & The Town of Wasaga Beach will be presenting the inaugural Wasaga Beach SLEDFEST! This will be a fun filled weekend for families and will fill our motels and shops. There is much to tell you about the event but I'm going to save the whole story for the folks of beach Booster... as after all, I'm here to talk about sleds! It looks likes we have the snow so we can jump on the sleds and hit the fun flipper! I'm sure many of you were pulling your sleds out of storage or pulling the covers off your sleds and found your rides looking a little worn. Perhaps you just want to change the look of your sled? I have discovered a new product that I have been testing all summer. It's called PLASTI DIP It's a new spray paint product that you can spray on the entire sled with colours of your choice. Maybe wife wants a pink sled? So now you're asking what's the big deal? Paint is paint. Well…..here is the best part. Once it goes on, if you don't like it or you want to change colours again, it just peels off! It peels away and leaves your stock paint intact underneath. Although this is really hard to picture, I did my entire 2009 Mustang GT with Plasti Dip and underneath is my stock blue paint, safe from stone chips, sun fade and scratches! Recently I purchased a used Phazer that was white with grey panels (see photos). We wanted to change panels to black and Yamaha wanted over $300.00 for new ones. One can of Plasti Dip did both sides and then we dyed the grey seat black for a total cost of just 30 bucks. There is a down side to the product, as the finishes available are flat colours, not glossy like car paint. If you are into the flat black or flat white look... watch out! You will start spraying all kinds of things around the house like I did! If you don't like it what you created, you can just peal it off and your stock paint is still there. The Plasti Dip has been on my car since April and it still looks good. Hopefully the new look on the sled will hold up as well. I urge you to Google Plasti Dip to view the great demo videos. This great product is available at our local Canadian Tire. It's still early in the season so before heading out, check the OFSC website to see when trails are safe. Mark your calendars for Wasaga Beach SLEDFEST January 4 & 5 at our World Famous Main Beach! Keep checking beach BOOSTER this season for upcoming snowmobile events here in The Beach. In my next feature we will talk about aftermarket skis and darting issues. Any questions or comments drop us a line at sledfest@beachBOOSTER.com Until next time... ride safe and keep the rubber side down. Sled Head John

Entertainment in The Beach! SLEDFEST - THE NEXT BIG WINTER EVENT Beach Booster Group is working with the North American Snowmobile Drag Racing Association (NASDRA) aiming to bring a professionally organized managed snowmobile drag racing event to our world famous beachfront. This event promises to bring a festival atmosphere on Beach Drive and attract families and visitors of all ages along with entertainment, refreshments, displays and vendors. Everyone is invited to participate under a safe and controlled environment for snowmobiling allowing a fun competition for families and recreational snowmobilers. Beach Booster Group and NASDRA will generate support from local businesses including motels, restaurants while welcoming thousands to the beach early in January to experience the beauty of our beachfront. This event is projected to lure two to three thousand people to our town. John Bors, one of the promoters of this amazing event, dropped by at our Beach Booster Studio for an interview on Beach Corner. John has a passion for snowmobiles and is eager to make SLEDFEST the next big winter event in our community. John recalls how the cars used to line up on Mosley Street.“You don't see that anymore – what happened to the town?” exclaimed John. “SLEDFEST will attract people from out of town and it will help them return in summer. It's all about fun!” A former disc jockey and radio personality on “Energy 108” aka Hitz 103.1 FM, you can still hear that radio broadcast voice. He wrote for five years for OSM “On Snow Mobile” a national magazine where John featured such articles as “Boys and Their Toys! - Narley Nytro.” John has built a few custom sleds over the years and is very knowledgeable when it comes to snowmobiles. When I spoke to him you can feel his enthusiasm for this sport. John has been living in Wasaga Beach for two years and was drawn to our community by the amount of snow during the winter months. When asked of any memories of Wasaga Beach “I don't have any memories but I recall as a kid riding the sled and being a family thing”. Owner of Beach 3 Eatery located at 826 Mosley Street open during the summer with a magnificent chef, Natasha, who cooked for Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip upon their last tour to Canada. John feels there are great opportunities in town. He's already planning for the next summer event something to do with “Fast Moving Toys” but won't divulge any further until he meets with Town Council. This two-day event will bring families, friends and tourist to our town to enjoy the natural beauty of what Wasaga Beach has to offer. Tickets will soon be available at most local shops or email SLEDFEST@beachbooster.com Dianna Chycki is host of Beach Corner and Co-chair of the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival. Beach Corner broadcast weekly Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. sponsored by the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival.

You know The Beach... does The Beach know You?
The city of Calgary has always been considered a force in community projects and events fueled by its volunteer programs. We got a glimpse of volunteers at work during its hard hit flood disaster this past summer and learned how volunteers lined up to help victims of the flood and literally helped the city get back up and running in record time. It was the city’s volunteer prowess that was able to generate a coming of age for Calgary in welcoming the World at the 1988 Olympics. Never before did Calgary shine as a World light as it did at the 1988 Olympics showcasing a modern city of strength, vibrancy and possibilities. The city has a long history of volunteering, as a prairie settlement whereby volunteering was literally a matter of survival for the European settlers who came to Canada with dreams of settling the west. Visit the Calgary Stampede sometime and feel the welcome of numerous volunteers and volunteer organizations through all facets of the stampede attractions from the entertainment to event support. For some people, it is hard to see the value of investing time and energy in developing a volunteer program. They might not understand that working with volunteers requires paying attention to their needs and motivations in exchange for their contributions to the mission at hand. Some groups that are established may be more fortunate in recruiting and managing volunteers through established volunteer practices that have been put in place over many years of operation. More often than not, emerging and smaller groups are faced with high volunteer burnout and turnover. They struggle to find the right people for the tasks at hand. Anyone who has ever been faced with recruiting, managing, and retaining volunteers knows that this is not a simple task. Volunteer positions must be designed to meet the needs of both the organization and the volunteer. Recruitment must target individuals with the appropriate skills, interest, and commitment. Training is critical to ensure that volunteers understand and can carry out their tasks. Volunteers must be screened to ensure safety for all concerned. Last but not least, volunteers need to be recognized for their efforts. So it begs the question. Why not develop an overarching volunteer recruitment, training and support organization in Wasaga Beach to fill the needs of all organizations in need of volunteers? We have several events and festivals in our town that could benefit from trained, capable and motivated volunteers that can be the talk of our town as they contribute to the “Beacher Experience”. It may be as easy as creating a Community Reach Program similar to the one in Midland today and developing a few volunteer strategies that support the long term vision of Wasaga Beach. “Be the Beach”, send me your thoughts and comments at Gary@beachBOOSTER.com on how we make our efforts count. Gary Cerantola is President of Critel Professional Services and chairs the Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce Promote Wasaga and the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival Committees. You can now listen to Gary on www.beachBOOSTERradio.com Monday at 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm and Sunday at 2:00 pm on “It’s Your Town – Beach Talk”

Born in Owen Sound “Billy” Bishop was attending the Royal Military College when war was declared in 1914. He first joined a cavalry unit but in 1915 transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. Courage and marksmanship made him one of the wars greatest fighting pilots credited officially with the destruction of 72 enemy aircraft. When hostilities ended he was the youngest lieutenant-colonel of the Air Force and had won the Victoria Cross, the Distinguished Service Order and the Military Cross. During World War II he became a director of recruiting for the R.C.A.F. with the rank of Air Marshal.

By the early 1840's the site was the northern terminus of the Garafraxa Colonization Road and free land grants were offered along its length, subject to settlement duties. John Telfer, government-appointed land agent for the new town, was one of first settlers, in 1842. The settlement was first known as Sydenham of Sydenham Bay after Lord Sydenham, governor-in-chief of Canada from 1838 to 1841. Sailors landing here called it Owen’s Sound because the bay beside which it was located was named for Capt. William Fitzwilliam Owen who charted it in 1815. Beach BOOSTER supports fun and safe sledding
Snowmobiling on Pavement
Staying Safe
No one has yet invented a device that enables perfect snowmobiling on pavement, as any snowmobiler trying to steer a sled at a gas station well knows. Whatever you do, don’t turn your skis sharply and go forward on asphalt expecting your sled to turn. It won’t and all you’ll accomplish is filing your carbides off as you scrape them sideways against the pavement. Easy, gradual turns work better, but a straight line is best. My primary tactic is to plan my approach to the pump before entering the station property. What I want to do is approach in a straight line, not having to make any turns or course corrections once on bare pavement. So I try to get lined up before I leave the snow I’m on, even if it means doing a loop or two to gain a more advantageous position. But sometimes, I’ve had to leave the trail behind to follow a road shoulder before even getting to the station. When the station is in sight, my best advice is still to take the time to study the various approach possibilities. I always check to see if and where the nearest snow or ice cover is. Often, while the pump area is bare, there is a packed area off to the side(s) somewhere. If so, my approach is usually three prong: first, from where I am to any available snow covering near the pumps; second, use that packed surface to reposition my sled to set for a straight run in; and finally, a bee line to the pump of choice. However, getting there is only half the battle. I also preplan how to exit after filling up. Sometimes that is just a continuation of the straight line right out to the other side, if there’s a packed surface there too. Then I reposition to get the optimum angle of approach for returning to the trail. It really pays to do some observation first, because often, there is more than one way to get from the trail to the pumps and back. Other times, a station does have one pump unplowed or has left a patch of packed cover nearer to one set of pumps than another. Sometimes, even though the station is on my side of the road, I’ll even cross over to the other side to get the best angle of approach when I cross back. It all depends on the terrain and location of any packed surfaces. That said, my secret weapon is reverse gear. Reverse makes it much easier to reposition my sled for a straight run. It means I have the option (frequently taken) of backing out of the pumps the same way I entered. And for some reason, it’s often easier to turn on pavement by backing instead of moving forward. Two final tips: Upon arrival, move the signal hose before you run over it so that the station owner won’t be angry with all snowmobilers. Then, as a courtesy to incoming riders and even drivers, after filling up move your sled away from the pumps and then go in to pay! So why do gas stations that cater to snowmobilers plough off all the snow leading to the pumps? Surely one lane could be left covered so riders could maneuver in and out without looking like fish out of water. But it’s a safe assumption that most station approaches will remain bare, so snowmobilers need to learn how to get in and out as easily as possible. Courtesy www.intrepidsnowmobiler.com
As we anticipate the coming weeks hoping it brings copious amounts of snow to our area, area clubs have been busy! Every year the volunteers head out to sign and stake the trails. These volunteers spend hours completing these tasks in anticipation of snow. These signs and stakes keep are permit buying riders on our trails and take them to various destinations, some only achievable by snowmobile! This season the Wasaga Snowmobile Club is working on keeping our riders safe. A new crossing on B-111 on Hwy 26 east of Stayner crosses on a 90 degree angle. This crossing also allows greater visibility to not only the snowmobiler but motorists as well, a win for both. The club is addressing issues of the existing trail from the 12th north on 45th street, to the 6th line in Clearview Township, our club boundry. This section has been given a temporary reroute, as the club deals with each issue it will bring us closer to having the trail safe and ready for next season. Clearview Township has extended their hand in partnership in helping resolve these issues, and the club looks forward to the collaborative effort. Our clubs executive and Directors have 1 focused priority at this point in the season- keeping the trails safe Allowing a safe and enjoyable experience for our riders, through the dedicated work of our clubs volunteers is what we are achieving. Well signed and staked trails! Keeping them safe to come back to our area for another day's ride is what we pride ourselves in. Bring on the Snow! ...Dave Farr, Director of Strategic Planning

President’s Message As we approach Christmas, we get to reflect on the first half of our Lions year. We have given away over $29,000 plus individuals through Health and Welfare. We have helped many people locally including our Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, Breaking Down Barriers, The Salvation Army, Kinette Club Toy Drive, The Canadians Wasaga Beach Soccer and Wasaga Beach Minor Hockey. We also supported Dreams Take Flight, CNIB Barrie, Canadian Council for the Blind Curling Tournament and Lions Club International Foundation (Phillipines) Near and dear to us is when we can support all 5 Lions camps – Bob Rumball Camp for the Deaf, Camp Huronda (juvienile diabetes) , CNIB Lake Joseph centre (for the blind and visually impaired) , Lions Camp Kirk Foundation (special needs) and Camp Dorset (dialysis Camp) We have also helped individuals in need. This included eye glasses, stair lift, scooter batteries, partial dentures and a Life Skills trip for special needs children. We have also had some fun along the way with our Breakfast with Santa. We made over 300 families happy meeting Santa, having photos taken with Santa, and of course enjoying Pancakes and Sausages. The smiles were on their faces, but they were also on ours. Finally, we had our largest Lions Christmas Dinner since I have been in this club. Over 50 Lions and spouse/guest, enjoyed a wonderful turkey dinner provided by Taste of Paradise and video dance by the Groove Tube. Merry Christmas to all!

Natural Medicine: Separating Fact From Fiction Green Tea Catechins Shown To Fight Breast And Prostate Cancer Dr James Meschino DC, MS, ND, ROHP The American Association of Cancer Research published a study in October 2012 showing that supplementation of catechins from green tea showed important anti-cancer benefits in women with diagnosed breast cancer, who were awaiting surgery. Many studies over the years have shown a link between green tea and cancer prevention. In this study researchers treated a group of women with various doses of green tea catechins (400, 600 or 800 mg, twice per day) or a placebo for six months. All the women had been diagnosed with hormone –receptor negative breast cancer and were awaiting surgical resection. The results showed that the green tea catechins had a significant impact on cell signalling mechanisms that encouraged cancer cell suicide (apoptosis). The catechins also toned down pathways linked to metastasis (spreading of the tumor through the body) and reduces secretion of growth factors that enable tumors to feed themselves with new blood vessels. Overall, this is very encouraging news. Green tea catechins are non toxic and can be taken at a high dosage for therapeutic reasons. This study suggests that green tea catechins may be an important part of the adjunctive nutritional management of breast cancer. More importantly, it supports the observation studies (epidemiological studies) showing that ingesting green tea catechins daily may reduce the risk of developing breast cancer in the first place. Another recent study showed that green tea catechin supplementation prevented the transition from pre-malignant prostate lesions to full blown prostate cancer. Many experts suggest drinking 3 -
5 cups of green tea each day as part of a wellness and disease prevention initiative. As I don’t always drink green tea every day I take a fat metabolizing supplement that contains significant amounts of catechins from decaffeinated green tea, as well as chromium and HCA. Together, these ingredients enhance fat burning and help regulate blood sugar. The green tea catechins also have important anticancer properties as outlined above. In my estimation green tea catechins are emerging as very important cancer fighters. Their effects are now being documented in human cancer studies, which is truly an eye-opening break through. “Snowmobile Capital of Ontario”
dining rooms all welcoming sledders. Exciting Radar Runs and races were organized in town and kept our winter visitors happy. Beach BOOSTER is pleased to be presenting the inaugural Wasaga Beach SLEDFEST this January 4 & 5 and know that this event will bring winter visitors back to Wasaga Beach! We want to showcase all that our town has to offer year round and boast about the beauty of our World Famous Beachfront... no matter when you come Old crest from The Wasaga Snowmobile Club to enjoy it! For the first time in years, we will be presenting Drag Racing on our Main Beach while displays and vendors will create a family friendly, fun atmosphere on Beach Drive. We will also welcome the Ontario Vintage Snowmobile Club to Beach Drive and I look forward to seeing some great, restored vintage sleds on display again in Wasaga Beach... bringing back memories of the good old days when we were... “The Snowmobile Capital of Ontario”!
With the December snow giving us some early snowmobile weather this year we look forward to a winter where we can welcome visitors to Wasaga Beach with all that our town can offer, from hospitality at our local restaurants, motels and gas stations to our network of groomed trails and of course our World Famous Beach! Wasaga Beach has a long history of welcoming Whipper Billy Watson at a sledders and at one time was known as The Snowarama Event in 1981 Snowmobile Capital of Ontario. Most major snowmobile manufacturers of the day, had dealers and service facilities here including, Yamaha, Ski-doo, Kawasaki, Chaparral, Rupp, Arctic Cat and John Deere. The Wasaga Snowmobile Club has always provided us with some of the best groomed trails in the country and these trails can serve as a conduit to bring snowmobiles to Wasaga Beach from communities far and wide. Good highways and roads mean that snowmobiles can be trailered here and once unloaded in The Beach can serve as the only means of transportation required while staying in town. At one time, the river froze solid every winter and was used for holding many winter events including our Winter Jamboree and the Whipper Billy Watson Snowarama. The river running through town also provided a main artery for snowmobile travel through town and at one time was lined with great hotels with live entertainment and Ontario Vintage Snowmobile Club to display sleds at the Wasaga Beach SLEDFEST January 4th & 5th
