The inaugural SLEDFEST in Wasaga Beach presented by Beach BOOSTER Promotions this past weekend was a huge success. The two day Event proved that Wasaga Beach is indeed the Snowmobile Capital of Ontario. It was great to see our Beachfront lined up with so many people and how the officials produced a professionally organized Snowmobile Drag Racing Event on our World Famous Beach. Mother Nature was on our side bringing beautiful sunshine on Saturday and although it was still a little cold, it kept the snow nice and crisp for the sledders. Along with the incredible view of Blue Mountain you just could not ask for a better location. Local businesses were busy and everywhere you went in town sledders could be seen parked throughout our community. The event brought families and visitors from all over to Wasaga Beach. People attending were very positive and everyone is looking forward to next year!

Doors open 12:00 pm decade, the Creative Cluster (in
the Creative Economy) has grown at a rate even faster than our overall economy. Between 1999 and 2007, Ontario's Creative Cluster job growth was double that of the rest of the economy - 38.3% compared with 17% in the overall Ontario economy. Ontario cultural industry firms – including companies in the film, television, publishing, music, commercial theatre and interactive digital media industries – have always been leaders in the domestic entertainment industry; today many are reaching for – and finding – success in markets around the world. The Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival promises to be a key driver in this area for economic growth.
As the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival grows it will contribute to the Creative Economy in Southern Georgian Bay creating jobs, attracting new residents, attracting more visitors and making Wasaga Beach the preferred destination to live work and play. We have tripled our submissions this season. We feature nine international submissions and our local Southern Georgian Bay entries are better than ever. Have a look at the attached information, "Be the Film Festival" and together we can achieve our Big Hairy Audacious Goals for the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival. Please contact the Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce for tickets at 705 429-2247. We will deliver them to your business door.

Point of View This past weekend, I had the opportunity to attend the newly created Sledfest at the Main Beach. On both days I was ecstatic to see so many people flocking to our beach to enjoy this high energy event. Huge hats off to the Beach Booster Group and the other organizers who I know worked tirelessly to make this inaugural event such a smashing success. From parking, payment, vendors and races – the event appeared seamless in its execution. I have had the opportunity to work with Joe on a few other events such as The Way Wasaga Was – which was another great success, and I can say that both of these events were fueled and the fires continuously stoked by Joe’s unmatched enthusiasm for all things about Wasaga Beach. I understand firsthand how much it takes to pull off a major event and for your team to pull off such well attended “Class A” event in a few short months is tremendous. On an important side note, I had the opportunity to be at Boston Pizza much later in the day and the restaurant was filled with event participants and attendees. Sleds could be heard zipping around Main Street and area in large groups, and that engine sound translated into “kaching” sounds for our local businesses. Congratulations and thank you again to the entire organizing team of volunteers for bringing such a world class run event to our world class community! Tanya Snell Wasaga Beach
Chef Brian Looking for something a little bit different. Try this quick and easy to make meatloaf recipe. Instead of forming a loaf, we scooped them into muffin tins and not only reduced the cooking time but also created an attractive and clean presentation on the plate. Topped with Taco sauce, green onions and cheese, this is a real winner that you will want to make again and again. Mexican Meat loaf INGREDIENTS 2 pounds lean ground beef 1 cup corn or tortilla chips, crushed into crumbs 1/2 cup taco sauce, plus more for drizzling Refried beans 3 oz salt to taste ( about 1 tsp ) 1 beaten egg 2/3 cup shredded cheddar and/or Monterey Jack cheese 3 tablespoons taco seasoning (the kind from the packet) Sour cream and scallions for garnish Non stick spray 1 muffin tray DIRECTIONS Place ground beef, crumbled corn chips, taco sauce, refried beans, egg, cheese and seasoning in a bowl and mix together until just combined - you don't want to overwork the mixture. Spray the muffin tins with a non stick shortening like Pam. Scoop the mixture into muffin pans and press down with a fork to pack the meat in. Cover with tinfoil and bake for approximately 20 minutes to 1/2 an hour at 375 degrees or until the juices run clear. Let stand for a few minutes, pop the meatloafs out and arrange on a plate Drizzle some warm taco sauce on top and garnish with sour cream, cheese, and scallions.

The 2014 Collingwood Winter Blues Series The 2014 Collingwood Winter Blues Series has a new home. The series will take place at the “Studio Theatre”. 65 Simcoe St. at St. Marie St. You may remember the building as the old home of the Enterprise Bulletin for many years until Rick and Anke Lex turned it into an Arts Centre. The new location has improved sightlines and sound. The first concert is on Thursday January 16 with a 7pm start. Lots of great restaurants close by for dinner before or a beverage after. Our first group will be the Alec Fraser & Mike Daley Dou. Alec Fraser and Mike Daley met in 2007 when they played a New Years' Eve concert with Jeff Healey's Blues Band. Not long after, they formed their duo. Their debut CD elicited rave reviews from the Maple Blues News, Penguin Eggs and the UK magazine Maverick and they were featured in Roots Music Canada Magazine Bassist/vocalist Alec Fraser was born in Glasgow and emigrated to Canada at 11 years old. He soon fell in with the blues-rock scene around Toronto, touring extensively with Morgan Davis, Danny Brooks, David Wilcox and Jeff Healey. Fraser Daley's music combines the freshness and vitality of authentic country blues with close vocal harmony. The duo also sounds uncannily like a full group when Alec employs the “brushbass” technique, playing a small drum mounted on his standup bass simultaneously with his basslines. Their repertoire combines old-time blues like Blind Lemon Jefferson's “Bad Luck Blues” with original songs in the country blues style like “Oh Alberta” and “Mr. Blues..” With their fresh take on the country blues, Fraser/Daley is winning fans across the country. Radio airplay has been strong, with cuts from their CDs remaining in rotation on many blues shows worlwide and the CBC Galaxie network. The duo also has a strong presence on YouTube, with 'live in the studio' videos. These guys are a great kickoff to the the 2014 Collingwood Blues Year, there will be adult beverage Tickets - Advance $15./concert $20. Door. OVERWORLD, Creating a Buzz in Today's Metal Rock World OVERWORLD is a young metal indie band hailing from Stockholm, Sweden, home of such successful bands as Abba, Europe, Crashdiet and many others. Established in 2011, OVERWORLD is often referred to as an energetic hard rock band. The band consists of Endigo (vocals), Nikke, (guitar), Kaz (guitar), Lynx (female bass player) and Andie (drums). This band is creating a buzz in Sweden with their latest song “Final Destination” released October 25th followed by their most successful concert to date in Huset, Sweden on October 26th. OVERWORLD also played at Sweden Rock Festival, one of the World's largest rock/metal festivals. Composed of musicians from now disbanded but previously well-known Swedish underground acts. They all live in Stockholm home to a raw death metal music scene. According to Andie, Gothenburg is known these days for their heavy rock and metal scene. He jokes how there are more bands than there are fans! The band is firmly gaining recognition for their explosive live shows, fresh take on the rock metal genre and close relationship with their everexpanding fan base and online presence with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and weekly Vlogs. Their Facebook page has over 25,000 likes. OVERWORLD caught my attention on “You Tube” with their music video directed by 11 Frames from their latest single “My Reality” released in June 2013. Their music video has been submitted to our upcoming Third Annual Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival in the General International Category and you can view at www.wasagafilmfestival.com. I had the pleasure of chatting with Endigo and Andie via Skype and when asked to describe their music Endigo explained: “Energetic, yet emotional, aggressive but pumping, it's like a punch in a face with a glove made of awesomeness.” The band participated in “Pledge Music Page” a fundraiser for musicians where items such as physical release to meeting the band, buying instruments and clothes they've used in the studio and on stage. Both Andie and Endigo indicated the fundraiser was for three months but the band completed it in less than five weeks. When asked if this type of fundraising would benefit other fledging bands. Andie expressed “You need to be sure that you have a dedicated steady fan base and be sure to know what you are getting into. There's a lot of work involved as you need to get people to buy items which is a big part of the process.” Social network has been a great way for the band to find people to work with and communicate with fans. Endigo further explains: “It's a good way to promote yourself and with time we'll find out how well this new technology will progress”. So far social media has been a great asset for OVERWORLD. Andie's intention is to conquer the world with the band. Let's hope to have the pleasure of seeing these guys in Canada and invite them to our Longest Freshwater Beach in the World. For more information: twitter.com/overworldband; www.facebook.com/officialoverworld. Dianna Chycki is host of Beach Corner and Co-chair of the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival. Beach Corner broadcast weekly Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. sponsored by the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival.

Wasaga Beach SLEDFEST 2014 was a true Community Event! The goal of Beach Booster Group has always been to promote Wasaga Beach in a positive way and our mandate continues to be, “help make Wasaga Beach an even better place to live, visit and do business”. On January 4th & 5th, Beach BOOSTER Promotions presented our inaugural Wasaga Beach SLEDFEST as an opportunity to showcase our World Famous Beachfront and bring Winter visitors BACK to Wasaga Beach, while recognizing the long and rich history of snowmobiling in The Beach. We feel rewarded as we welcomed almost 3,000 spectators to our two day event, the majority being from out of town, while having over 240 registered racers participating to entertain the crowds. Businesses in town were busy and our Winter tourists enjoyed the hospitality offered in Wasaga Beach. An event of this size and significance could not have been accomplished without the valued contribution of local businesses and individuals who offered the services and time to help us welcome visitors to our first ever snowmobile event! We were amazed at the turnout at our two pre-event Volunteer Meetings and valued the enthusiasm and encouragement offered by our volunteers. A cross section of people from our community offered a variety of unique skills and personalities to make sure our many requirements were met. All were eager and seemed to share the Beach BOOSTER Passion to help bring good things back to The Beach. Although each and every valued volunteer provided much needed and appreciated individual support... I truly thank the entire group for their dedication, stamina and hard work during such extreme weather conditions, as without your participation, our event would have not been possible. Given the extremely cold conditions, we thank The Town of Wasaga Beach and Georgian Shores Transportation for opening the Old Fire Hall (current Transit Building) to be used as a warming station. The ability to keep some of our mechanical equipment warm overnight allowed us to get an early start each morning. Many local businesses also stepped up to offer support for SLEDFEST. Each individual sponsorship is appreciated and was important to making our event successful. A very special mention must be made to Boston Pizza of Wasaga Beach who supported our idea of SLEDFEST from the beginning and also kept our volunteers fed throughout set up and the event weekend. Members of the Central Ontario ATV Club also offered support from the start and kept our event site safe with their members patrolling our event and helping with setup and tear down. All the necessary snow removal, maintenance and set up was accomplished with the generous supply of machinery and support from Contractor Rental Supply in Collingwood. Our perfectly groomed spectator area and safe and level drag track was made possible with the PistenBully groomer, supplied by Track Vehicle Repair in Elmvale. Beach BOOSTER thanks everyone who sponsored, promoted and volunteered to help us bring a successful, exciting Winter event back to Wasaga Beach.

Staying Strong and True The Wasaga Snowmobile Club is one of the oldest clubs in the OFSC. The awards and recognition of the clubs achievements have been possible by staying strong and true to our passion and love of snowmobiling. Our club received the Snowmobile Club of the year, from the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) in 2010, and then received in 2011 the Canadian Council of Snowmobile Clubs(CCSO) Club of the Year! This was all made possible by Janet Farr who submitted the clubs involvement with its stakeholders, our community and dedicated volunteers. It is neither luck nor coincidence that has bestowed the club and its executive. Our club has their priorities straight and the dedicated executive team works with their membership and its community to get things done which are to the benefit of all involved with snowmobiling. The clubs newly elected executive is a forward thinking group that brings a business acumen to their efforts along with the outstanding commitment to delivering a quality trails experience. Through devoted communication and aggressive promotion by the club, the Town of Wasaga Beach has opened their doors to welcome snowmobilers to Town. The club is always working to make Wasaga Beach a sled for the day destination. Riders who visit will find trails lead into town for access to food, fuel, along with accommodations. Through the effort of the club to grow the sport, increase social aspects for our members, and improve the overall development of snowmobiling we have developed great partnerships with our club supporting dealers and Mid-Ontario Snowmobile Trails association(M.O.S.T.). As the arrival of early snow has caught some off guard our grooming team has gone above the “norm “of expectation. We did endure plus 6 degree weather followed by high numbers of visitors, the guys have brought the trails back to exceptional status, approaching the total hours of last season. This new team is dedicated to groomed trails! The clubs 2011 achievement brought smiles to all, being the 1st club selected by Snow Goer magazine as the recipient of their Honor role, has developed in to a lifelong friendship, our club will always welcome the staff of SnowGoer/STV as family. So as the snow is here the trails are groomed give a wave and a quick thumbs up to the grooming team. Dave Farr Director of Strategic Planning "this section is provided to the Wasaga Snowmobile Club for their provided content. President’s Message It's hard to believe, but we are half way through our Lions year! We have many exciting events coming up in our second half. First is Lions Project Pride, where our club gives every Grade 1 student a Canadian flag and a certificate stating that they are Proud to be Canadian. This is followed by our Pancake Breakfast on Family weekend, and then our largest weekend fundraiser at our 21st Home and Garden Show in April. This is going to keep us busy while serving our community and raising funds. Our clubs elections are in April. The following positions will be open for election: 3rd Vice President, Secretary, 2 Director Positions, Tail Twister and Lion Tamer. Don't be afraid to step up to the plate and share your skills. We are a club that welcome fresh blood with fresh ideas to our board and become leaders within our club. If you are thinking about running for any of these positions, or would like to learn more about Lionism, please register for the Lions Learning Weekend at the end of March at Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville. It is great watching our club grow! I believe that this is happening because we are ALL having Fun while Helping Others less fortunate then us.

A Fun Look Back! We welcome guest writer Shane Hall to The Way Wasaga Was. First and foremost I’m glad for those whom attended... and sorry for those that missed it. By "it", I'm talking about Wasaga Beach's own SLEDFEST 2014, held this past January 4th and 5th. What a great turn out for this inaugural event! Thousands attended to watch hundreds of sleds take the 660 foot Drag Race challenge. This event was not only for the “new” sleds, but for the vintage as well! The race organizers offered multiple classes for the vintage riders to enter on both day one and two. The oldest sled to race was a 72 Yamaha which easily took its class on day one. Day two's highlight was a showdown of Yamaha vs. Merc. The winner would be decided by double elimination. After two heats it was tied one a piece. The final pass was won by the 76 SRX by 2/10ths over the 74 Sno Twister (congrats to the Lee brothers!). The weekend also provided those who attended a wide variety of old snowmobiles on display. Two dozen sleds captured the 60's and 70's era. From the mainstream brands of Skidoo and Yamaha to the less common Skiroule, Rupp, Sno Pony, and the obscure Grafico, the manufacturers were well represented! If you attended the show you would also have seen a very good selection of 'mini' sleds too. What the display offered was an opportunity to start conversation and meet new friends. Many reminisced about the good old days with the saying "when I was growing up" generally being the lead in. What was clear though, was this community has long been waiting for the return of snowmobiling to the area. If this two day event was any indication of what that potential may be …. Wasaga Beach, welcome back to the snowmobiling world! Where have you been all these years? Shane Hall is the Co-Founder of the Ontario Vintage Snowmobile Club. With a focus on the camaraderie that develops when people of same interests come together, this group enjoys working, talking and remembering those old machines.
